Statham in London -vs- A Cop Killing Scumbag!! BLITZ...

Published at:  Jul 14, 2009 11:03:00 AM CDT

Merrick here...

The mighty Jason Statham looks to be joining directed Elliott Lester's adaptation of THIS novel by Ken Bruen. The book will be adapted by Nathan Parker (MOON).

BLITZ is...

...a London-set thriller about a serial killer targeting police officers.
[EDIT]
Statham will play a tough, uncompromising cop assigned the task of tracking down the killer. Paddy Considine will play his partner.

...according to THIS Variety reference. The Amazon link above tells you a bit more about the storyline ("Blitz", for example, is the nickname of the serial killer).

Lester's last feature film was LOVE IS THR DRUG from back in 2006 (trailer HERE), from a screenplay by Wesley Strick (Scorsese's CAPE FEAR and Platinum Dunes' NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake).

Sounds like there are other books involving characters in this story; might this be the beginning of a franchise for Jason?

    by palimpsest

There's another novel of his currently being adapted. William Monahan's writing and directing LONDON BOULEVARD based on Bruen's novel. The flick stars Colin Farrell, Ray Winstone and David Thewlis. As for The Stath, I hope this one pans out for him. He's consistently better than the material he's given, but it's time to do more work like the excellent THE BANK JOB than the so-so Jet Li movies that clutter his CV.

    by hint_of_smegma

You won't find one of those wallowing POS's on the road in Britain. Our cops for the most part can fit in regular sized cars. Beyond that, Statham might do shit films from time to time, but he intersperses them with brilliant ones as well - Bank Job, Snatch, Lock Stock etc...and even some of his popcorn fodder is good fun. If this is his 'Bank Job' mode alongside Paddy Considine (amazing in everything, especially Dead Man's Shoes) this will be fucking brilliant.

Noir thrillers that have won all kinds of international awards. But Statham is not the man to play Inspector Brant. Brant is basically a toned down British version of Vic Mackey with hygiene issues. Statham just doesn't fit the role unless he seriously let's himself go. I'll cross my fingers because I love the books, but I don't see it working.

Statham is better than that. He will probably evolve into a character actor - character actors have to be convincing in their craft as well. Aside from the Ritchie movies, did you see Bank Job? What did you think?

caper flick with political intrigue and suspenseful twists and turns. I loved the "brick" scene toward the end, but a typical Statham action flick (as falsely advertised on the US DVD) it was not. Being based on real events made it all the more enjoyable.

Jason Statham IV: Over the top smugness.

    by sithtastic

Seriously though, I've always thought of Statham as a tough guy who always seems to play it a little too safe when it comes to picking scripts (that is to say he sticks too close to the one-dimensionality of exploitation action films with dressed up euro trash trying to kill a la the Transporter series). Here's hoping that he's actually taking some risks for a change, because I genuinely like him as a tough guy and want to see him demonstrate some range.
