Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 3rd wk of July! The Moon, Irwin Allen, go Joe, Crouching Tiger Blu & more!
Hey folks, Harry here with this week’s DVD Picks & Peeks. There’s some jewels, but it is another short column – as there just weren’t many releases that really captured my attention today. Next week gets slightly better – with some big releases, but go ahead and check this week’s out. As usual – the pics and titles click over to Amazon where you can learn more and purchase the item – which gives a small percentage of the purchase price to help make this column happen. Here ya go…

FOR ALL MANKIND – Criterion – Blu Ray
20 years ago a stunningly gorgeous space documentary about NASA, The Moon & the Astronauts that did it came out and blew me away. I was freshly graduated from High School and this was one of the first documentaries that didn’t involve hippie music festivals – that I can recall seeing. I was very happy when I saw that Criterion had put this out on Blu Ray, because as a Space geek, seeing this footage as perfect as possible… well, its Christmas morning! Here’s what Criterion put together for us:
New, restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised and approved by producer-director Al Reinert
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack
Audio commentary featuring Reinert and Apollo 17 commander Eugene A. Cernan, the last man to set foot on the Moon
An Accidental Gift: The Making of: For All Mankind, a new documentary featuring interviews with Reinert, Apollo 12 and Skylab astronaut Alan Bean, and NASA archive specialists Don Pickard, Mike Gentry, Morris Williams, and Chuck Welch
On Camera, a collection of excerpted, on-screen interviews with fifteen of the Apollo astronauts
New video program about Bean’s artwork, accompanied by a gallery of his paintings
NASA audio highlights and liftoff footage
Optional on-screen identification of astronauts and mission control specialists
PLUS: A booklet featuring essays by film critic Terrence Rafferty and Reinert

G.I. JOE Season 1.1
This is a nice collection. 4 discs – but hold off if I were you. If you’re a real GI JOE fan, there is a COMPLETE COLLECTION coming out with a GI JOE footlocker and all manners of extras for the whole series (all seasons) – but it’ll be a bit pricey, this way would be an installment plan on getting them all – and you’ll wait longer. But if you want a TASTE of this original series – this is pretty darn good. The extras include a bunch of the PSAs, original Joe toy commercials, the original GI Joe 1963 Toy Fair presentation and more! It’s a fine first installment, but if you’re like me, you want that footlocker that’s coming up!

THE TOWERING INFERNO - Blu Ray
Haven’t seen this Blu Ray yet. But from folks that have received it, I hear Fox did a great job on the super-widescreen transfer. If you head over to Amazon – the list of extras never ever seems to end. For example – there are 32 Extended and Deleted Scenes and a different opening. There are 10 featurettes. 6 Storyboard comparison. The NATO presentation reel, the 1974 featurettes, a 77 Irwin Allen interview. Articles, photos, shot composition and matte paintings, behind the scenes and costumes photo galleries and a lot more. I can’t wait for the same treatment on POSEIDON ADVENTURE.

THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT
Watched this on Blu Ray. I didn’t like it the first time – mainly because I felt as I was watching it… I felt it descending into rampant bullshit (aka not true or close to it) – which was further confirmed by the “LADY THAT LIVED IT” in the crazy to watch evasive Q&A. But when it came in on Blu Ray – I decided to give it a fresh look. I love Peter Cornwell’s animated work – but this film just didn’t do it for me at all. I blame the editing, the photography, the sound editing, the score… every bit of Rock Video bullshit that is a part of this film. When telling a GHOST STORY – you do not need crazy amounts of visual effects. TRUE GHOST STORIES scare because they’re true – because when you really do witness a spirit – it sends a shiver that shakes everything that we think we know. That this plays with possession as well… the film doesn’t handle that or the ghost story well at all. Oddly enough – I liked the actors uniformly in the film. Just not the way the film came together or was written. PASS.

CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON / CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER / HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (Blu Ray)
Ok – this is a pretty shitty situation. If – like me – you got CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS instantly upon release – you’re being FORCED to rebuy them, to get CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON which has never been released on Blu Ray. Now – if you haven’t bought either of those releases – well then this is a great deal for you. The two titles we’ve had are exactly the same. Ang Lee’s classic – is STUNNING on Blu Ray. I haven’t revisited the film in years, but I fell in love all over again. Ziyi Zhang is so stunning in this film. She’s just amazing here – as is every aspect of the film, performance and story. As of now, Sony has not set a date for a stand alone release for CTHD, so if you want to pass on this release – have faith that when it is a single Blu Ray – I will let you know.

BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT / MONTE CRISTO
John Gilbert as a silent swashbuckler in two great features that I’d never seen till this release. MONTE CRISTO is a bit of a rough print of the sole surviving Czech print. But if you love that story like I do – it is very satisfying. And BARDELYS… well that’s directed by the great King Vidor – and is really cool to watch. Like Monte Cristo – it’s a rough print, but the only existing one. There’s moments where footage is missing, but is bridged with stills and the script fills in. Definitely not perfect prints, but it’s all that exists on the records for now. So if you’re a fan of Silent cinema – this is a treat!

[REC]
”The Movie That Inspired QUARANTINE” – fuck that noise, because if like me, you saw that incredibly bad QUARANTINE, that would make you want to possibly steer clear from that. However, REC is fucking phenomenal. In every step – this film gets it right, where QUARANTINE fucked it up. You put this on alone and you’re gonna get real scared. FUCKING GREAT! Do not let this pass you by.

1,0001 CLASSIC COMMERCIALS COLLECTION
I know. Most of us hate COMMERCIALS – but this isn’t like that. This is pure unadulterated Nostalgia. Over 16 hours of commercials spanning DECADES. Perfect for that CRASS COMMERCIAL PARTY where it’s nothing but brand names – and everyone comes as their favorite Ad character. They’re all on here. But it is a definite trip to watch these.

I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER – Blu Ray
Holy Shit! Did you know Jack Black plays an incredibly annoying dreadlocked stoner dude on the island that is painfully terrible? It is true. He didn’t do this for credit apparently, good idea. Freddie is terrible. Jennifer Love Hewitt’s chest was better in the original. Brandy made me laugh throughout… unintentionally. But though this is pretty much a trash flick – I kinda enjoyed it. At least it ain’t S. DARKO.
Ok – the past two weeks have been fairly weak on releases. That changes next week with WATCHMEN Director’s Cut, CORALINE, CHARLIE’S ANGELS 4th Season, Robot Chicken: Star Wars – Episode II, 300 The Complete Experience Blu Ray, MADE IN U.S.A. Criterion, TWO OR THREE THINGS I KNOW ABOUT HER Criterion, THE MIGHTY BOOSH: Season 1 & Season 2 & Season 3, VISIONEERS and more. Now for a little clickable preview of a very cool Amazon exclusive Blu ray of WATCHMEN:

WTF that movie Haunting in CT looks so lame. REC sounds really cool though. Other countries always make better horror.
-
Can't be true!
-
...it wasn't.
-
Waiting for WATCHMEN DIRECTOR'S CUT.
-
The Changeling with George C. Scott. Can anyone suggest me something similar in tone?
-
No review of that? No extras though and only on dvd as far as i'm aware. which is a shame cause the UK release had all the Tourist guides from the website hosted by the (Pre-orangutan) Librarian. But it is only $10 so its not too bad I guess.
-
He makes my favorite "ghost" movies. While not focusing on ghosts he still evokes the mood. Check em out.
-
That is all.
-
The only thing that matters is that "The State" complete series was finally released today. I don't care if they changed the music. Sure, some sketches won't be the same, but it's The friggin' State!
-
i will take that installment plan..as with Transformers. they better release them all this time though!!! bring me the REVENGE OF ZARTAN!
-
then i will man up for WATCHMEN!
-
= Oxymoron
Ghosts don't exist. 'When we do witness a spirit'???
Doesn't happen. -
Quarantine wasn't THAT bad. I've been waiting for Rec since I've heard about it, so I'm curious how Quarantine got it "so wrong".
-
Harry, come on no mention of it anywhere? It was a silly movie, not as cool as cube. Were you a huge fan of it or something?
-
Oh great we get a weeks worth of BluRay BluDong jokes...
-
I'll find out this week. I wanted to see [rec] first but fucking they didn't release the DVD until way after the Quarantine dvd came out. So I've seen Quarantine I didn't think it was complete shit, the Dexter girl was annoying as fuck though.
-
For people who don't want to rent the DVD, its been showing late night on Comedy Central all week. Set your DVRs. Also having said that, I've been watching it and after hearing hype after hype about how its the end all of sketch comedy shows...it was ok. Just like all other sketch comedy shows from the early 90s like Ben Stiller and The Wall. I was not as impressed as I thought I would be. Also had no idea Joe Lo Truglio has been around that long, looks like he took a break. The crazier thing is how most of those comedians still look the same.
-
Is on stand-alone in the UK, so maybe you can buy it from here and it will work on your players? Just a thought.
-
love me some ENO music...
-
throne of blood, for all mankind...
-
they are going Blu Ray.
-
the movie will fit right in
-
Shout only got the rights to the 95 episodes Sunbow produced, they didnt get the DIC episodes. Hopefully they can eventually get those are another company can so fans can have a truly complete series. The movie isnt included either because someone else has the rights. Same thing happened to Transformers, they have everything but the movie.
-
bunch of shitty movies this week.I hate shitty movie week.
this, combined with the fact that thery are remaking LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.....GRRR..... -
JohnRyder, THE CHANGELING was a brilliant ghost story. If you're looking for something similar I'd suggest EXORCIST 3 (same actor, same creepy tone), or THE ORPHANAGE (a scary melancholic movie that doesnt resort to blood or gore).
-
which is weird, because i went into it fully expecting to hate it. i think you're being too hard on it, harry. of course, maybe i wouldn't look at it so favorably if i had seen "[rec]."
-
re: the kid puking crap...
Why would his parents think that was a good idea? Little fucker will be scarred for life. -

by supercowbell5thecowbellhasspoken
wtf?
-
ziplocks for the sequel!
-
Quarantine was a really fun movie, I'm not sure if it's knowing it was a remake or just movie watcher schizophrenia that made you dislike it Harry, but damn your tastes are hard to peg down.
The releases as of late have definitely kinda sucked, buuuuuuuut, we are getting closer and closer to Xmas. And that's when the goodies start hitting shelves.
My number one most anticipated upcoming release is Night of the Creeps followed closely by Trick r' Treat. -
Was it not a small hit of a movie? I'm surprised it wasn't capitalized on more, buy releasing [rec] while Quarantine was in theaters and releasing fucking The Poughkeepsie Tapes at all.

HARRY - any word on when we're getting more BOND ON BLU?
by kaiser soze
Harry, any idea why they stopped the Bond bluray sets at vol 3, why two more bond films were released after that that no set was released for, and why there have been no announcements about the next wave of releases?
-
Didn't a Dennis Quaid horror film called The Horseman come out today? Let me guess, since it wasn't on Blu-Ray it doesn't get mentioned.
-
Exorcist 3 is fantastic, and both Scott and Dourif are great. Orphanage too. It goes just that extra step and turns into more than a horror flick.
-
I love [REC] so much.
-
Not a brilliant horror film but it at least had the guts to be scary, unlike Drag Me to Hell which had to pepper really lame humor and slapstick sight gags throughout the flick.
-
white_vader yeah, the Wendy and Peter Pan analogy in ORPHANAGE was really rather wonderful. I spent the whole film being scared shitless and then in the final moments shed a happy tear. How many horror's put you through such emotions?
-
I thought it was supposed to be pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of Rec? Which you liked.
I tried to wait for Rec, but ended up seeing Quarantine at the cinema. Fucking idiot and his girlfriend were fucking with their mobile fucking phones through the whole thing. In a fucking horror/suspense movie! When they kept doing it right at the end (here's a hint youngsters, the finishing time is often printed right on your ticket! You don't need to even check the time every five minutes! Shock!) and lighting up the whole place with the flashlight-strength screens, I flipped. The credits came up and I verbally let 'em have it (and they were so clueless that they honestly didn't understand why anyone would be upset!) with both barrels. When I calmed down enough to breathe I realised the guy was a bodybuider and could have broken me in half. Added to the fact I'd been calling his girlfriend a clueless moron. Thank God they were so taken aback...
But from a safe distance I say - fuck 'em! Then there was the time that arsehole made me miss the major plot point (that the kid wasn't his real son) in There will be Blood. Gah. I swore at him the third time, too. Turn the fucking things off or don't go if you're so addicted to your fucking phone you can't live without it for 2 hours!
Thank you for listening. -
Well said. They somehow didn't beat you over the head with it though like Speiberg would. Actually, his Pan one in E.T. was cool, but my God the bashing the audience in A.I.! And yes, the scares, the sad tear, then the happy tear. Awwww.
-
Quarantine was pretty much the exact same movie, almost word for word, scene for scene, except it was in english. How can you take a movie like REC, redo it based on pretty much the same script, with the exact same setting and say that Quarantine was "INSPIRED" by REC?? It was a complete redo of a GREAT foreign film just for the sake of doing it in english. Have we become that lazy that we can't read sub-titles?
-
I think it was the last column where we were debating your journo skills and the actual meaning of professionalism. Jesus Christ man, what is it with you and everyone else (including news writers and Anchors apparently) not understanding the basic concept of singular and plural? Call me a Nazi, I don't care. It's still stupid.
-
The shit coming out of the kid's mouth is supposed to be ectoplasmic fucking goo! Funny, considering that this is marketed as a "true" Ghost story, yet the cover of the fucking DVD shows ectoplasm which Houdini completely disproved so many years ago. Why can;t we get a movie about the last twenty years of Houdini's life, when he set out to disprove all psychics and psychic bullshit and was never beaten once? There was a great book put out two years ago focusing on this aspect o his life/career. Better yet, why don;t we just get a fucking Houdini movie? Sorry, Tny Curtis but that movie sucked! AAAHHH, Harry, another lazy ass column. Well, you did review a movie this week, so we'll let you pass. I imagine the level of fatigue that sets in on a weekin which you have to do a movie review AND your DVD column is insurmountable. I can only imagine being in the room with you after this arduous task, listening to you breathing like Tony Soprano into a bullhorn. Good job, Harry! Two columns in one week...well...one-and-a-half...
-
has so much fine 70's cheese in between the scenes with Newman and McQueen that I'll need a bag of tortilla chips when watching it! Can't wait!
-
In this talkback. I'm pretty sure he never reads this. He just poops out these reviews and then forgets about it.
-
Doesn't it come out today?
-
Man that movie pissed me off. "Oooooh the lighting is so genius!" Wow 88 minutes of fucking crap entertainment, but Raimi went all the way back to his roots and threw some fucking shadows around. BIG FUCKING DEAL IT SUCKED CAT SACK.
-
where's Harry's review? I just ordered it. Pick up the latest issue of Hustler. They threw a ton of money at the sets apparently. Flynt must be a fan!
-
these two films are litmus tests for your personality. both are extremely well-done, technically and subjectively. it all really comes down to what scares you more: demons, or science? [REC] asked you to entertain the notion of "possession as infection." Quarantine simply asked you to believe a scenario based around an everyday disease that gets mishandled to the point of chaos.
Frankly for me, the idea of [REC] is cooler than its remake, but the plausibility of the remake actually puts the jeebies in me more than the original. -
Quarantine was such an awful movie that I'll probably never watch [REC]. That's just how destructive these shitty Hollywood remakes can be.
-
Everyone knows Gus Van Sant's PSYCHO was just as awesome as the Hitchcock version.
-
Don Draper and Pete Campbell, motherfuckers.
-
How could you possibly leave off this release? It looks amazing on Blu Ray, not to mention the show is great.
Pathetic. -
That's inhumane. I'm calling Amenesty.
-
Because the girl in REC is so damn CUTE!
-
Exactly, my man! The fact the ectoplasm is their number one marketed image for this film, all the while breathlessly screaming that it's a "true story!!" fills me with venomous hatred. Ectoplasm is a veritable calling card of spiritualist hoodwinking. Of all horror movie hoaxes-Blair Witch, Exorcist, Amityville, the Haunting in Connecticut is by far the most odious. If I ever meet the film makers or the original family of con artists, I"m going to slap them in the eye.
-
can't wait for next week
-
...who actually claims to have seen a ghost? Lay off the reefer, pal. I know it's Austin, I know you people have nothing better to do than smoke pot and vicariously fellate Obama, but really...grab the reins.
-
Blu-Ray Joan? Sign me up!
-
Son of a bitch.... getting kind of tired of the double dipping. Bad enough with Blu Ray discs costing so much, but then they are getting us suckers to pony up to re-buy stuff on blu-ray a second time to get all the additional extras. I'm definitely getting to the point where I'll almost never even think about buying the initial release of a movie now (at least with Watchmen they're being up front about a deluxe edition coming later this year).
-
Of course he's going to puke them up. Not sure why all those dirty clothes are going up, though.
-
the state should have been on the list...for those of you who dig reno 911, stella, wet hot american summer, and everything joe le truligo...you DEFINATELY should pick up the state and laugh till it hurts...the fact that it is actually out is pretty surreal...and nothing beats seeing dangle sans mustache and looking alittle chubby... --sam--
-
I will definetly check out Exorcist 3 and
The Haunted. I might give THE ORPHANAGE a second chance. I started to watch it but found it way too stupid to be believable, hence scary so I stopped watching after like the first 5 minutes. I mean who leaves her child wander unattended in a cave? plus perfectly reflecting the light with the mirror to the lighthouse in 0,5 seconds was supposed to be smart but it was the opposite. These small details annoyed me. Maybe I was in a wrong state of mind. -
introduced me to the word OVERRATED. I did not understood the HYPE. Maybe I was just too young back than.
-
G.I. Joe, Transformers G1, or Batman: TAS? I'd like to watch old toons without all the compression artifacts. That, and don't want to be double dipped, later, and/or am sick of waiting.
-
Theyre out, deluxe edition. Get em, suck em, love em.
P.S. Whats Harrys girlfriend look like. Is she hot? Where them pics at. -
About FUCKING TIME. I guess producers of Quarantine didn't want American audiences to see the (probably) better original before seeing the remake. How lame we had to wait this long.
-
Was there a new release of Throne of Blood with a different cover? Where?
-
JohnRyder, you were not too young. CROUCHING TIGER did nothing for me either. As a kid who grew up loving Bruce Lee movies, y'know where people actually bled and died, I was just bamboozled by a martial arts film where every fight was a pointless ballet ending in a bloodless draw.
Beautiful bot boring. -

I'm Buying GI Joe if they have the you tube vids "Pork Chop Sand
by eoneon
you know those vids are fucking great! "your Mom ever hang out in dock side bars? It's like lookin in a mirror" freakin GOLD!

thanks. I kinda felt alone with that.

check out the criterion site for more..
-
I agree the original the Haunting is one of the best movies about ghosts but keep in mind it has a slower pacing than modern films. You might also want to try the British efforts of Ghostwatch and The Stone Tape. They didn't frighten me much but I found them damned interesting in regards to the theme of where supernatural and science collide.
-
No wonder the format is taking so long to catch on...

the batpod for the bluray dark knight was a fucking joke
by supercowbell5thecowbellhasspoken
so fuckin small and childish looking and the cases were shitty. the watchmen bluray se. will probably look about as gay.
-
Can anyone tell me what "Go Joe" is from? I see it used all the time, but to my knowledge, they've only ever said "YO Joe" on the animated series. Is this a common misconception or does "Go Joe" predate the animated show from the 80's or what? What's the deal?
-
Everybody knows this is fact. Stupid Sheeple.
-
This was a big movie at the time it came out in '74. I think I was 16 or 17, and of course, it made a huge impression. Interesting now to watch this one thru the lens of history - and considering that there were no CGI shots and some of the models were over 70 feet high. Models are so much cooler that CGI. Hope they get the Blu-ray transfer right. Disaster as entertainment? You betcha!
-
That model work looked really bad. It's just not lit right.
-
Did come out today,I would imagine Harry got a screener copy since I was sent one and am not as important as Mr.Knowles. It was a pretty decent serial killer drama with some good actors (The Kid from thumbsucker)but was predictable and had DQ in it. Even if Harry doesn't like it I think it should be reviewed. I think is just as valuable a service to tell us what movie to avoid as it is to recommend movies.
-
I liked it. I thought the ending and the explanation for what was going on was a cool idea. Too bad they didn't use the same idea for the remake.
-
What fuckin number is that?
-
That fact just makes it more fun to watch. him
-
...do you ever have anything good to say about ANYTHING? Like when you walk into a room does it actually get colder?
-
Sorry if you didn't like it at first, but turn the lights out and stick with the entire film. The ending made me choke up... after the film scared the crap outta me. If you like ghost stories, you've got to see it.
-
Now I haven't seen REC, but Harry you're a fool - Quarantine was a very solid movie. The one camera thing is getting old, but I liked it. If you liked Cloverfield so much, I don't see how you didn't like Quarantine.
-
Because if you watch REC, you will see how crappy quarantine really is. Kinda like watching THE BEACH movie and then reading the Book.
-
Check out The Innocents (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055018/), starring Deborah Kerr. I'd also recommend Paperhouse (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098061/) and Les Diaboliques (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046911/).
-
"you’re being FORCED to rebuy them, to get CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON which has never been released on Blu Ray."
idea: just watch crouching tiger on dvd. -
I thought I'd see the list this week. I cannot wait for Season 3. I got my father-in-law into it, and now he's been bugging me for the second season DVD set.
-
Dunno if it's coming out in the US, but there's a great DVD just come out in the UK that compiles all the BBC coverage of the Apollo 11 flight, really great old style tv reporting with a lot of science, mostly culled from The Sky At Night - a BBC astronomy show that has been running for 51 years with the same presenter (something of a world record, I believe).
Also, NFT in London are running a season of Moon related movies, going to see For All Mankind and Moonwalk One this weekend. -
Saw it last night - hits every note perfectly. I thought Quarantine as just OK. And that little spanish spitfire who plays the main character in REC, she's waaaay cuter than that Emily Rose chick.
-
Especially since it fleshes out some of the characters. I like both movies and will end up purchasing both once the prices come down. And Manuela Velasco (she plays Angela in [REC]) is definitely the hotter of the two actresses.
Both films are essentially funhouse rides, strolls through haunted houses. I'm really not sure how people can't have fun with both films. -
Elias Koteas and Amanda Crew. Koteas for actually providing some weight to his role and Crew for being so damn cute. That house would have had such an underlying funk due to its wall contents as to be uninhabitable. If you're going to make a movie and claim it's based somewhat in reality you might also want to make sure that it contains some realistic elements.
-
It's only redeeming quality is a very unexpected turn by Ziyi Zhang. Talk about projecting an ending. The movie is made even worse because it definitely had potential. And what the hell happened to Dennis Quaid?
-
If you liked The Changeling you will like The Others. The Others steals a lot from The Changeling but in the good way. I also have a weak spot for Lady In White and The Watcher In The Woods. Ghost Story is also pretty cool as is Stir Of Echoes. But The Changeling, The Others and The Huanting (the old one) are the best. The Orphanage is good, bordering on very good but not great. Haunted from 1995 starts out well but turns very silly.
-
hilarious. Probably the funniest talk back up today. check it out (especially all the moon landing didn't happen tin-foil hatters!)
-
Looking forward to Watchmen next week.
-
Funny you talk about them being upfront about other editions of Watchmen, because Snyder also said a YEAR ago that there'd be a version of 300 with the extra HD-DVD bits and more besides. They definitely DID give a heads-up, so you can't really bitch because you were the one that missed it. It was also said here at AICN too, and I mentioned it myself when Michael Bay was busy making such a fool of himself about 300 convincing him to go HD-DVD ("after drinking the Blu-ray kool-aid" as he said), when both versions were exactly the same bit-for-bit vc-1 encode. Fuckwit.
But like I said, we WERE warned about super-duper 300 edition. Which is exactly why I waited 'til now to get it. Cheers. -
You may be right, but it's therapeutic for me to vent about that shit. - I've got three kids and a mortgage. And hey, I don't go as batshit crazy as many in here. Ignorant statements about oldschool fx vs cg get me on the soapbox though. And obviously watching suspense flicks with mobile phone fuckwits. And, and...
-
The Others is a very very good movie indeed. Too bad it came out shortly after the Sixth Sense. I think I saw a clip on youtube from Ghost Story. It was about a man being scared off a bride. Is it that movie? That clip was cool, if the the movie is like this it is definetly on my too watch list.

If You Hated Quarantine, you'll Hate [REC]..Period
by the_floating_skull_of_robert_loggia
Harry's full of shit. Quarantine and [REC] have a few differences, but, at the core, are fundamentally the same.
Both films have their individual strengths and weaknesses (Jennifer Carpenter is infinitely less annoying than REC's Manuela Velasco), but, to me, their a wash, and both excellent verite style exercises in terror. -
Don't care about the other two. I hate this new trend of releasing multiple blu-ray packs and not releasing them single (for example, if you want Pitch Black, you have to buy Chronicles of Riddick too).
-
Actually I don't remember what it was about. But it is the 1981 John Irvin film starring Alice Krige among others. That movie scared me when I was a kid but maybe it would seem silly now. Many of these films seem silly today but The Changeling is still amazing after all these years. But when you are watching ghost movies it is very important to see them alone, in the dark and late at night to get the right atmosphere. I hope we get another great haunted house moive soon as The Orphanage was very good, nearly great. By the way, The Legend of Hell House has some good stuff. But the 1973 movie is poor compared to the great book by Richard Matheson.
-
has some stupid details that prevents it from being great. But at least it had a good, scary atmsophere and some great set pieces. One part at the end freaked me out and I loved it. It is very rare these days that a movie scare me but that movie had a few scenes that really did.
-

but search youtube: "Ghost Story 1981" and the trailer will come up as the second clip. Pretty cool trailer.

There are also trailers for The Watcher In The Woods, Lady In White, The Haunting ang The Innocents on youtube.
-
In region B. I'm not sure yet if it's region-FREE though, which would solve our problem. It's Sony Classics I think, so it could be all-region. Anyone know?
-
a travesty i tell ya a travesty!
-
In particular if it will be presented in its entirety with the original language soundtrack?
-
PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES PUBLIC ENEMIES! You should be flattered that I care what you thought. I do love ya man.
-
home video. A fuckin' joke on the studio. What the fuck did they spend $100 million on anyway, catering? Because none of that money made it onscreen (at least where the cinematography is concerned). Fuck that movie.
-
Is about a group of elderly men who share a dark secret. And they are now being haunted by that secret. This was, I believe, the last appearance of Douglas Fairbanks, and Fred Astaire as well. Both gave excellent performances. I also remember the ghost effects were quite cool as well. But it's been about 20+ years since I've watched it, I think. I'd recommend it.
-
that's not exactly what I meant by a reveiw but thanks. I've liked all of Mann's movies so you and I might not be on the same page as to what we like.
-
i haven't seen it yet
-
Which is one of the best Horror novels of all time. The movie isn't very good, but I still like it. It has some really good actors in it and while it lacks cohesion it definitely packs on the atmosphere.
-
That helped to ruin Miami Vice for me as well. I like some of Mann's work, just not overly enthusiastc about the guy. Public Enemies had a piss poor script and shite camera work. And it cost $100 million. If you spend a $100 million on something the end product should at least be visually appealing.
Michael Mann needs to be audited. -
I know I read that right. There's an interview with Irwin Alien on Towering Inferno? Not sure who he is but maybe the interview is good. Spell check bro-ham.
-
I re read that statement three times and i thought it said Irwin Alien. Sorry Harry, i'll lay off the medication for a while.
-
I am a Huge Mann fan. His films are some of my favorite. Miami vice was my least favorite, I found it enjoyable. I can not comment on PE since I've yet to see it. HD is not for everyone, like any tool it depends how you wield it.
-
I'm surprised you haven't seen Public Enemies yet. So, when you do, keep in mind they spent $100 million on the movie, then try to figure out what they spent the money on.
If that task was a drinking game, by the end of the movie, you'd be completely sober. -
Maybe I should check again.
-
It looks like they spent less than $100 on the cinematography.
-
Irwin Alien would be a cool AICN talkbacker nickname though...
-
The only place the moon could land would be on Eath.I'm pretty sure someone would have noticed by now!!!
-
Yeah. I'm a little gun shy from this summer's disappointments, I'll most likely see it this weekend.
-
I'm suprised they haven't touched more of Irwin Allen's stuff, beside the so-so remake of Poseiden. A reboot of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea?

I'd pay to see a good remake of "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea
by blakindigo
That was good stuff, as a kid.
-
I saw quarentine months ago. Guess what? They are the same fucking movie! Quarntine was a very faithful remake. Do not get the hate!!!!!
-
I banged ur mother several times while u were watching that awful show. She loved dat shit
-
You know what's weird. Even though Quarantine is almost a shot for shot remake of Rec it was clearly the lesser of the two. It's true, Quarantine did everything wrong what Rec did right. It's something i can't explain. You just have to see it for your self.
-
I want the entire Sunbow run. Can't seem to find a date for it's release though.
-
Harry? Where's that info?
-
They want you to buy this, then when he footlocker comes out you're supposed to be all *Oh,..shiny* and buy it. Then they'll bring out the footlocker with limited edition dog tags and replicas of his first set of fatigues with authenticated battle markings.........
-
Make it the Petronas Towers for added effect.
-
And for good reason. IT SUCKED!
-
Who is this Lu Jun Pei anyhow?
-
then I threw up in my mouth a little....
-
Cloverfield was big budget studio intelligence insulting garbage with characters as fake as any Michael Bay film, AT LEAST Quarantine had characters that were extremely well acted and came off as actual human beings responding to a scenario that was beyond them. Like it or not it AT LEAST had that. I don't know if it was as well done as REC, but it's not a bad film simply for its technical and acting prowess. I also liked the idea that instead of fumbling around and denying denying denying until it was an epidemic, the government recognized a zombie plague and shut it down IMMEDIATELY, it's a cliche buster.

And guys Harry likes things on principle, not substance.
by industrykiller!
This hasn't been a secret for a very long time.
-
I'd hardly call that big budget.
-
I don't know, something about Quarantine didn't work for me where as I liked REC. I think it was the atmosphere of REC that seemed more realistic or at least as realistic a movie like that can be.

'The Woman in Black', 1989. Used DVD copies going for $100 on Amazon. Its is a forgotten gem of a movie that focuses on a young lawyer sent to a coastal town in England in the 1920s to settle the estate of an old lady who recently passed away.
He must go to her house and catalog her personal effects, put the house up for sale, etc. The build up is slow and like the haunting, it is not what you see that makes you afraid, but what you are afraid you might see.
This movie is a period drama, no cellphones to be found, no post-modern witticisms, no slashers, no cliches, just genuine terror and good storytelling.
There are several terrifying moments spread throughout the movie and all the while you are afraid what might happen next.
I am so sad to see this movie forgotten. Please read the comments on imdb but I do warn you, try to avoid spoilers. Its better to go into the movie without knowing what will happen.
I suggest looking into 'alternative' ways to source this movie as it has been out of print for 9 years now. I was lucky to be one of the few that got hold of the limited run. -
not often I jump out of my skin but I watched it on my own, in the dark, whilst my wife and kids were away for the week. When the body falls down the staircase... even the actors were unaware it was going to happen - fact. You can tell by their reactions that they weren't expecting it. The documentary feel is enhanced by the fact that I can't speak Spanish in the slightest. Oh, and the 'Watchmen DC' is truly the best of all comic book/graphic novel adaptations. Seen it three times already and will be paying many repeat visits over the years I'm sure. Glad I gave the theatrical cut a miss.
-
I have been trying to get copy of that for ages. It sounds like my cup of tea. Must try harder to get it I guess.
-
about a flying digestive tract?
I'd watch that movie. -
is one that I will defintely rent. Darn good cast. Loved those disaster movies.
-
Man put the disaster in disaster movies! He made a rake of stagnant shit (transfixing lure of killer bees notwithstanding). But he struck the right chord in this it's true. Give that man a hand shandy
-
It was so much better than the movie. The movie was Hollywood hokum. The book was much more adult in nature. I still feel bad (30 years later) for the young couple making out in the convertible when the giant sheets of plate glass rain down from the burning skyscraper. Must have been like that on 9/11/2001 as well.
