EW’s Ausiello Tackles The New Characters (And Plotlines) For FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!!
I am – Hercules!!
Entertainment Weekly’s Mike Ausiello has details on four characters – three regular and one recurring – for season four of “Friday Night Lights,” coming to DirecTV 101 this fall if I remember correctly.
Two will become players for Eric Taylor’s new team, The East Dillon Lions. One’s white and hates that he doesn’t get to be a Panther. The other’s black and has had at least one brush with the law.
There’s also a hot co-ed from a footballing family who demonstrates strong coaching skills, so I imagine she’ll be circling the lair of one of the Lions. The recurring part is a gorgeous freshman girl who gets all jealous when she discovers her hot mom is boning recent Dillon grad Tim Riggins.
Find all of the Ausiello’s story on the matter here.

One of the best shows. Period. NBC are jerk-offs for not promoting it.
Oh, and first. -
Season 3 was a complete return to form. One of the best "big 3" dramas ever! And lockesbrokenleg, you don't need to have played organized sports to appreciate it, so you should probably watch it until they come out with a 1 hr. drama about larp-ing.
-
and I'll continue to watch it, but do we really need to revisit Riggins the man whore, who sleeps w/ moms? Wasn't the point of his relationship w/ Lyla to give him some depth and maturity? Hopefully, this storyline won't be as bad as it sounds. FNL is one of the best written shows on television. I'm also a little sad that Saracen won't be a regular anymore. They should bring him and his grandmother back as often as possible.
-
and no one would suspect!!! i mean, really, guys, try it out... you won't be disappointed at all!
-
gets this sort of continuation, whereas other things like Veronica Mars, Studio 60, etc., did not get this direct cable deal. To be honest, I've never watched the show and it doesn't appeal to me, but I have pretty much only heard good things about it.
-
NBC/Direct TV got 2 more seasons of FNL off the ground.
-
FNL and LOST... 2 of the best shows ever.
-
...The Wire in my opinion. I had flu last week and started watching it after I saw Remember The Titans. I didn't expect much but 50 episodes and 4 days later I think it's awesome. Season 2 loses its way a little and there were a couple of flat episodes but overall it's a beautiful show with well-written characters (particularly Coach!) It even got me interested in football and I'm British!

This show is *beep* amazing
-
Has this, in fact, ever been done before where a network show gets picked up by a TV service provider, rather than another network? If not, then maybe this will pave the way for other deserving shows. It would have been nice to have a deal like this for VMars though.
-
He's done a Kick ass Job so far...I have faith
-
See, and its statements like that that make me consider maybe checking this show out...

Easily within the top 5, if not very possibly the greatest dramatic TV show ever. To establish some credence to that claim, allow me offer up my personal favorite currently running shows behind FNL as being that of Mad Men, Lost, 24 and Kings. Atop my best all-time list are such greatness as The Wonder Years, Quantum Leap and Freaks & Geeks. So that's where I'm coming from. Embarrassingly I admit that I watch an obscene amount of TV and Film, much of which are guilty pleasures at best, however I proudly proclaim FNL as my most favorite and offer it up with my highest recommendations and regaurds.
Although portrayed accurately, the good news is Friday Night Lights really has virtually nothing to do with (American) Football, which is fine as I personally loath the game as a spectator sport. However what it is about, for those that don't know, is...well everything...life...humanity...choices, integrity, love, race, class, religion, morality, confusion, compassion, mistakes, ethics, triumph, loss, family, sadness, joy, bigotry, marriage, adolescence, work...really EVERYTHING that has any true significance in this life is given a fair treatment, without ever stooping to demonize anyone.
For those that have shied away from the mistaken belief that this show is about Football or is in any way akin to the frivolous, soap opera superficiality of other teen centered programs, you're worry's are understandable but in this case unwarranted and you are missing out. Your initial apprehensions are thusly forgiven and I hereby release you from all misbegotten assumptions, in the purest of hopes that you may still be able to discover the brilliance of this show while it still has breath. It's truely a gift for all who choose to invest themselves in it's majesty.
Even better than the movie on which it is based, FNL is surely the truest, most accurate depiction of small town America ever represented on TV and most definitely the best portrayal of the lives of booth average middel-class teenagers as well as the larger community around them. From what usually get shown on television I bet non-Americans might think we all live in two story white houses and drive Porsches around to an endless parade of extravagant drug fueled debauchery, that certainly is not my experience let me tell you.
Other than highschool football being the focal point, gathering place and one uniting object of interest within the community, it really only serves as a backdrop for the most realistic and earnest look at the youth of america ever articulated on dramatic telvision. There's no villian or great conspiracy, no malice or agenda, it's just really fine character drama. Being from a not too disimilar small town in California myself, I can vouch for the authenticity of this show. Nuanced, subtle and heartfelt, FNL is a beautifully woven tapestry detailing the intricacies of life and adolescence in America. FNL really gets it right. -
Man, I cant get enough of the wonderful world of HS Sports and the adults who worship at their alter. I mean, these are Beautiful People.
-
bone the mother, of course.
-
the real meat of FNL is the depth and accuracy with which it paints the small (fictional) Texas town of Dillon and it's various flawed citizens.
-
should had gotten that deal but its cool that FNL is doing great things.
-
Nitpicky, sure, but every high school character gets a happy send-off in a neatly snug bow. Going to Dillon Tech for two years wouldn't be a cowtown death warrant; it's what most marginal students do who pissed off their early education and get the chance to prove otherwise.
-
Can't wait for this one to start. Glad I got the DirectTV.
-
Like everyone else, I pretty much dismissed FNL when I heard about it. Another teen drama, okay. It took Patton Oswalt raving about how awesome it was for me to finally check it out, and thank god I did. Like everyone else has said already, its just fucking brilliant.
-
I suspect you will be hooked by the end of the very first episode.
-
You hit the nail on the head. I didn't give a damn about this show, but it was something I could stream on netflix and next thing I knew I had finished 2 seasons in no time flat. I watched season 3 as it aired on NBC and it is a brilliant show.
-
Well said dude... perfectly summed up.
One rainy longweekend my girlfriend was flipping through my PVR and asked "what are all these 'FNL' episodes?" I told her that "FNL = Friday Night Lights" and that she might want to give it a try (I was in my kitchen when I said it, but I could feel her roll her eyes in the living room as she responded "Isn't that about football? NOoooo Thanks."
I made a deal with her, we'd watch one 42 min episode and if she didn't like it, I would never make her sit through a FNL episode again. Turns out we watched much of the first season and the movie that long weekend.
Unfortunately, this highlights the problem with the series: Too many people that would likely appreciate the show, never give it a chance because they think it's 90210 meets high school football and that's it. So fans of great character dramas never give it a shot because the think it is A. A cheesy show about teen angst, and B. About American football. A shame, but I am glad the series is available on DVD, because I think it will have a long life as people discover it on that medium. -
I think you are missing the point of the series...
Sure there are some good things that come out of organized sports, but a lot of crap too. As for the parents and booster clubs that support local sports teams, this series does a good job illustrating their shortsighted world view which inevitably comes at the expense of academics.
The series does a great job pointing this out through several ongoing story arcs. -
Couldn't have said it better myself The_Genteel_Gentile. You summed it up perfectly.
Never has a television show had such a profound emotion impact on my life like FNL. It's simply amazing. -
Shows with sports stories in them usually fail due to this approach. Remember Sportsnight? It was one of the more brilliant shows in the history of television that its target audience didn't watch because it was "about sports" and sports fans didn't watch because "isn't this supposed to be about sports?" I remember when I told friends that The Wrestler was my favorite movie of the year, people said "Wait, you like pro wrestling?" I don't, but sports are a fantastic background in which to set stories. The Wrestler was about what happens when the spotlight fades and the audience goes home, life, not wrestling. FNL is about life, not football. It's about reaching or failing to reach your potential, it's about juggling your real family with your team. Where i think the show is most successful, is painting a picture of rural blue collar America, where the men of the town peaked during their highschool days and simply spend the rest of their lives going through the motions.
It no no way glorifies organized sports, and even if you don't like football, I garauntee you the show is great enough to even get you excited about the 2 minutes of football you see every few episodes. There is no other show on television that deserves a chance as much as FNL does. Watch it! -
Glad everyone here is digging FNL as much as I, it deserves all the love.
-
about this show, i finally decided i had to watch it. and after being 17 eps into the 1st season, It's pretty fucking good. I don't see how anyone can put it into the same league as the wire, but its pretty fucking good. Check it out, anyone who's borderline interested.
