Sam Neill wants you to watch the trailer for the Kiwi fairy tale flick UNDER THE MOUNTAIN!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've made no secret of my love of all things New Zealand, so it should come as no surprise that I jump on this trailer for Jonathan King's big screen adaptation of Maurice Gee's UNDER THE MOUNTAIN, which I'm told is known to every New Zealand child. You can tell by the below trailer, hosted by Sam Neill who also appears in the flick, that New Zealand plays a huge role in the film much like King's last flick, the super fun BLACK SHEEP. I think the trailer might give away too much to us non-Kiwis, but I dig it. Looks like it could be fun. What do you folks think? CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE TRAILER! One of my favourite books as a child.

    by Kovac

I haven't read it since then but it was pretty memorable and I hope they can achieve the same thing with this movie. I remember the book having a very creepy vibe to it which is something they need to retain. Like all fully kiwi made productions it is bound to be campy as hell, but I might give it a watch. It can’t be worse than the television mini-series produced in the 80s

Always good to see some gingers getting film work!

Yup, remember watching this as a kiwi kid

    by MattInTheHat

and "Children of the Dog Star". Both pretty low budget as I recall but great kids sci-fi. I'll definaely be checking out the remake!

    the third eye

    by drewbydoobydoo

is this based on the show that nickelodeon grouped with children of the stones and into the labyrinth into the series they called The Third Eye back in the 80's? If so that is awesome. I can't wait to find out more, although into the labyrinth was my favorite of the three shows.

    by C A Iversen

Yeah the effects look terrible, but New Zealand films tend to often be released with poor trailers and the effects end up a lot better in the actual film. Lord Of The Rings was the only group of films I remember made here that had top level effects in the trailer. Even then the earliest fellowship one was kinda average in places. I'm looking forward to this, but it really is a film for ages 8-15 if the story's exactly how I remember it.

    Yup... 3rd eye...

    by MangoPositive

I was 5 when that aired on Nickelodeon. I have always wondered what the hell that was... I've never been able to find it, but this trailer set my memories ablaze. I just checked the Wiki for "Under the Mountain" and it pulled up the series from 81. Crazy.

C A Iversen: First teaser for Fellowship

    by MattInTheHat

I vaguely recall the first teaser I saw for fellowship looking distinctly early PJ horror-ish with close up wobbly-cam work on Gandalf learing out of the shadows, the scene where he returns to bag end to check out he ring. At the time it kinda reminded me of Braindead or Bad Taste maybe. Then more footage showed it was fucking awesome. I think PJ might have thrown tha out at an early stage to disguise how good it would be lol.

    Low budget

    by Manus

If this is fully NZ made film (not like LOTR which was a Hollywood budget) then this will be a pretty low-budget film - FX look good to me with that in mind. Hope it gets released outside NZ.

  • July 13, 2009, 8:31 a.m. CST

    I loved Under the Mountain!

    by invincible88

This was one of my favorite things to watch growing up. All the The Third Eye series were good: Children of the Stones, that one about the wizard the kids are traveling thru time to free(I DENY YOU THE NITUS!) Fantastic.

  • July 13, 2009, 8:40 a.m. CST

Looks like it definitely will not be fun

    by Buzz_Aldrin

but "low budget yet trying to be standard hollywood big money bullshit" bullshit. the worst kind.

The one you're thinking of that you can't remember is INTO THE LABYRINTH and don't forget THE HAUNTING OF CASSIE PALMER. But ... CHILDREN OF THE STONES was #1, but UNDER THE MOUNTAIN was a close 2nd.

    by bambamjones

Screw the fx's for now. Check out the story written by Maurice gee. In NZ we all get read this at school. Maurice Gee also wrote "In my fathers den " which is one of the most fantastic thiller/dramas i've seen in years. Yip its generally a young adults book but i think it will appeal to all.

  • July 13, 2009, 10:45 a.m. CST

    Fuck yeah, another Kiwi film!

    by D.Vader

I had a Kiwi film teacher in college who made us watch a lot of Kiwi films like Campion's short "Peel", "Once were Warriors", "The Piano", "Whale Rider", "Forgotten Silver", "Heavenly Creatures", etc... Sure I'd seen some of them before, but with her perspective and history, we were able to really appreciate those films. I've since fallen in love with films made in and about New Zealand. Thank you Peter Jackson and Jane Campion for being the gateway drug.
Now, if only "Black Sheep" had been better...

Did Sam Neill look like he was annoyed?

    by D.Vader

At having to do that trailer introduction or what? I got the sense he was just gonna do it his way, regardless of what the director said, so that he could leave and go back to his lunch.

    Bouncy X Education

    by Antz

The Kiwi bird is the national bird of New Zealand. It's a easier to say "Kiwi" than "New Zealander".
The name of Kiwifruit (now commonly shortened to just "Kiwi" in the US) was actually a name invented in New Zealand to market the fruit overseas. They are not native to New Zeaand but grow well there. Originally they were known as a "Chinese Gooseberry" but that was not a marketable name at the time.

Is the best country, ever. From one who has lived there, it IS just as great as it looks in the movies. All those wonderful Kiwi movies. So glad to see so many people have seen OWW and Campion flicks and early PJ! I knew PJ turned down directing this project saying he just didn't like the story...if I remember correctly. I wonder, will WE like the story PJ didn't?? Question.

I pity you all... particually the Australians

    by MaxPhallus

As I sit here in wonderful Christchurch, New Zealand... Under the Mountain as mentioned above is a kiwi classic, there was an NZ produced series in the late 70's/early 80's, dying to know if its the same as mentioned above! I'll guarantee this will be on the cheap, but will be filled with your typical kiwi ingenuity, & it is an awesome story... remember when great films were about great stories not just great special effects??? & yes the Kiwi is a flightless NZ bird... & boo to Australia! You can keep Russell Crowe!!!

  • July 14, 2009, 1:04 a.m. CST

Kiwi's have this wierd sibling rivalry going with Australia

    by ChoclateWoman

It's wierd, but the sad thing is no-one in australia really gives a shit about it and most things new zealand. Aussies go there as a near and cheap vacation spot and then come back to australia to get paid decent wages and not live on tiny earth quake riddled island nobody gives a fuck about.

  • July 14, 2009, 1:29 a.m. CST

New zealand is noted for the following things:

    by ChoclateWoman

    1) Peter jackson 2) It's natural beauty as show cased by Peter jackson's movies. 3) Peter jacksons movie productions 4) That old dude that had something to do with everest. Shame helicopters took his place. 5) Having Australia steal all of its celebrities and icons, except for peter jackson. And thats about it folks. Move along, nothing to see here.

    by MaxPhallus

Is obviously Australian, they care so little about being inferior to New Zealanders they need to point out little they care about it, why say anything to begin with? Probably something to do with their convict upbringing... & you are dead right, Russell Crowe was born in New Zealand... & you can still keep him.

you can keep russell crowe!! OH NOES!!

    by ChoclateWoman

This is the best line you dumb kiwi fucks could come up with? It's like me making a bunch of NZ sheep jokes or posting about how Russell crowe in NZ fuck knuckle accent talk would be "Rissel Crewe" or some queer shit like that. FYI Convict jokes are so 80's guys, come up with some new material, ya inbred island dwelling hicks. Btw not "Aussie" just aware that Australians don't really give a toss about NZ and New zealanders outside of it being a cheap tourist destination where they can treat the locals like shit but the locals need the money because they get paid shitola in wages so they keep sucking the aussie money cock. Kinda like Americans don't really care about Canada or canadians. You guys better get back to preventing the Maori's from eating all your bird population and mentioning Peter Jackson's name in everything related to New Zealand so someone can give more a fuck about your shitty litte island(s).
