Danny Huston will make a fine King Richard, the Lionheart in Ridley Scott's ROBIN HOOD flick!

Published at:  Jul 13, 2009 6:13:03 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. You may be thinking "Why do we need yet ANOTHER retelling of the Robin Hood tale?" And I agree with you, but at the same time I'm really anxious to see all these great actors playing in the same sandbox.

Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt and now Danny Huston as King Richard... in a Ridley Scott retelling of the tale. I'm at the very least intrigued.

I do wish the film had played out as rumored... with Crowe playing Nottingham and telling this tale from the Sheriff's point of view. That's fascinating to me, as was the rumor of Crowe playing both Nottingham and Robin Hood. I don't know if that ever got officially denied, so maybe we'll still get that, but I doubt it.

Huston will make a good King Richard. Despite his poor showing in WOLVERINE I'm still a loyal fan of his. He was great in the misfire that was 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, fantastic in CHILDREN OF MEN, THE CONSTANT GARDENER, as Orson Welles in the underseen FADE TO BLACK and THE PROPOSITION. And I can. Not. Wait. To see him as Poseidon in CLASH OF THE TITANS.

Anyway, that's the word according to The Hollywood Reporter.

And am I high or was it reported a while back that Rhys Ifans had this role? I guess that either fell through or was BS to start with. I think this is better casting to be honest.

What do you guys think?

stories or legends. They really shouldn't be considered remakes. Just like there's no definitive film versions of Shakespeare's plays, these kinds of movies can reinterpret these tales again and again.

Robin of Sherwood is still the best ever telling of the Hood legend. Especially the double episode 'The Swords of Wayland' and the final Praed episode 'The Greatest Enemy'.

It better have at least SOME twists in the tale

    by performingmonkey

Come on, EVERYONE knows the Robin Hood story. The BBC Robin Hood series has just been axed after they killed off Robin, Marian, Guy AND the Sheriff! The basic Hood story was all there, so it's only JUST been retold. Scott's film better be different to any other Hood adaptation. It DID sound like it was going to be originally, with the Hood/Sheriff dynamic being shaken up, role reversals and all that, but now it just sounds like the same old stuff. What it needs to have is connections with his Kingdom of Heaven movie, it should feel like it's sequel.

Agreed, ROS was the quintessential interpretation of the Robin Hood legend so far. It did great things with the Pagan/Christian religious tensions of the time. And I think it may be the first version to introduce a saracen warrior into Robin's men. It was a great series.

Really, RS almost did Dune?! That is fascinating. I read somewhere that Lynch was offered Return of the Jedi. I wonder, if Lynch had accepted, passing on Dune, would Scott have taken on Dune and then what would have been the fate of Blade Runner?

I think in this case, I prefer the way film history actually unfolded.

I'm glad Ridley decided to stick with the legend

    by lornsorrow

instead of turing it on its head to try and grab attention. I really disliked the idea of "the telling of the legend from the perspective of the sherriff, or the notion that Sherriff and Robin were both the same man."

For me, the Robin Hood legend is one of the most important legends humanity has created. It says so much about the rights of the governed and the need to draw a line on the sand when the government disregards those rights. I think the story at it is, is powerful enough to stand the way it does without any gimmicky changes with the plot, or hacking off Robin's dick and calling her Starbuck.

I mean, I'd rather see a movie where Satan was the hero and Jesus was a villain (although I don't know how they would make that distinction seeing as how these two character myths have so much in common) than for them to fuck with Robin Hood.

Remus is the half-brother of Johnny's grandmother. So you have a family dynamic that's observable to most- with Johnny's mother being in denial about the whole thing. She can't cope with the idea that Remus may be her uncle by blood, and it becomes just another race issue with her and her more liberal husband. But it all ends well, with Remus having his family's backing when he decides to run for office.
