With Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) in tow, Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Sookie (Anna Paquin) head to Dallas to carry out Eric’s (Alexander Skarsgård) vampire-reconnaissance mission – but a surprise awaits them at the airport. At the Light of Day Institute, Jason (Ryan Kwanten) falls victim to a practical joke, but has the last laugh when the Newlins anoint him for a higher calling. Maryann (Michelle Forbes) throws Tara (Rutina Wesley) a birthday party at Sookie’s, attracting much of Bon Temps to its Bacchanalian revelry. Sam (Sam Trammell) postpones his departure from town to attend the bash, connecting with Daphne (Ashley Jones) in the process. Having barely escaped Fangtasia, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) finds himself reluctantly pulled back into Eric’s orbit. Written by Alan Ball; directed by Michael Lehmann.
Episode #17: “Never Let Me Go”
Debut: SUNDAY, JULY 19 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
In Dallas, Sookie connects with one of her own, then joins Bill and Eric for a strategic summit at the lair of the missing vampire, Godric (Allan Hyde), attended by his lieutenants, Stan (Ed Quinn) and Isabel (Valerie Cruz). Meanwhile, Jason shows his mettle at a Light of Day boot camp, and is rewarded for his hard work with a gift from Sarah (Anna Camp). Rebuffed by Tara in her relocation efforts, Maryann decides to cast her spell on the staff of Merlotte’s, softening Tara up towards her new “family.” Eric shares a little-known secret about his past with Bill, and Sookie makes a decision that might solve the Godric mystery – or get her killed. Written by Nancy Oliver; directed by John Dahl.
Episode #18: “Hard-Hearted Hannah”
Debut: SUNDAY, JULY 26 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Accompanied by Isabel’s human boyfriend Hugo (Christopher Gartin), Sookie embarks on a dangerous mission to locate Godric. Meanwhile, Bill is shocked when a vampire from his distant, more violent past resurfaces in Dallas. In Bon Temps, Daphne presses Sam to get comfortable in his own skin(s); Hoyt (Jim Parrack) continues his unlikely courtship of Jessica; Andy (Chris Bauer) interrogates Lafayette about his disappearance; and Tara and Eggs (Mehcad Brooks) take a detour while on a road trip. At the Light of Day camp, Jason faces difficult emotional and physical choices. Written by Brian Buckner; directed by Michael Lehmann.
Episode #19: “Release Me”
Debut: SUNDAY, AUG. 2 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT)
Betrayed by Daphne (Ashley Jones), Sam (Sam Trammell) finds himself in an unenviable predicament at the hands of Maryann (Michelle Forbes) and her wild-eyed minions. Imprisoned with Hugo (Christopher Gartin) in the F.O.T.S. church, Sookie (Anna Paquin) uses her telepathic powers to reach out to Bill (Stephen Moyer), who’s being detained at the hotel by a stubbornly obsessive Lorena (Mariana Kloveno). After crossing a line with the Newlins, a fearful Jason (Ryan Kwanten) tries to sever his ties with the Fellowship of the Sun, but gets plenty of resistance from Steve (Michael McMillian) and his enforcer Gabe (Greg Collins). Written by Raelle Tucker; directed by Michael Ruscio.
Episode #20: “Timebomb”
Debut: SUNDAY, AUG. 9 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Sookie’s captivity takes an unexpected turn when Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) arrives to do his master’s bidding on the eve of the Fellowship’s lockdown. In Bon Temps, Sam finds himself in hot water after making a gruesome discovery at Merlotte’s, and Andy (Chris Bauer) proves no help in coming to his defense. Sent home by Bill, Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) and Hoyt (Jim Parrack) learn that when it comes to sex, every time is the first time. Tara (Rutina Wesley) and Eggs (Mehcad Brooks) devour a mysterious meal prepared by Maryann, with unexpected results. After Jason pays off his debt to the vampires, Godric (Allan Hyde) looks to enlighten his more single-minded followers. Written by Alexander Woo; directed by John Dahl.
Episode #21: “I Will Rise Up”
Debut: SUNDAY, AUG. 16 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
A wounded Eric plays Sookie for a sucker, to Bill’s dismay, and ends up getting inside her head. Later, Sookie and Jason bond over their recent adventures. Blaming Eggs for Tara’s bruises and bizarre behavior, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) and Lettie Mae (Adina Porter) try to figure out a way to pry their kin from Maryann’s clutches. Hoyt defends his relationship with Jessica to Maxine (Dale Raoul), to no avail. Jailed by Bud (William Sanderson) along with a group of Bon Temps revelers, Sam looks for a way to escape and avoid capture by an increasingly obsessed Maryann. In Dallas, Eric and the vampires defend their recent actions to Nan Flanagan (Jessica Tuck), and are shocked when Godric decides to take the fall for their PR disaster. Written by Nancy Oliver; directed by Scott Winant.
Episode #22: “ New World in My View”
Debut: SUNDAY, AUG. 23 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Sookie, Bill and Jason return to a Bon Temps turned upside down by Maryann. Lured to Merlotte’s by Arlene (Carrie Preston), Sam and Andy find cold comfort in their refuge from a group of bloodthirsty revelers. Bill discovers that traditional vampire techniques don’t work on Maryann; Hoyt and Jessica try to keep a lid on Maxine’s madness; and Sookie tries to push through the darkness consuming Tara. With all hell breaking loose, Jason takes the bull by the horns to rescue Sam, at least for the moment. Written by Kate Barnow & Elizabeth R. Finch; directed by Adam Davidson.
Episode #23: “Frenzy”
Debut: SUNDAY, AUG. 30 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
With the crisis in Bon Temps careening out of control, Bill seeks out the advice of Sophie-Anne (Evan Rachel Wood), the Vampire Queen of Louisiana, but must exercise patience before she gives him critical information. Meanwhile, Sookie and Lafayette find that protecting Tara from herself is more difficult than they anticipated; a desperate Sam turns to an unlikely source for assistance; and Jessica tests Hoyt’s allegiance to Maxine. Written by Alan Ball; directed by Dan Minahan.
Spoilers for tonight’s installment lurk in invisotext: At the end of tonight’s episode, Sookie runs into another psychic. And like Sookie, he’s not making a fortune working for the FBI or the CIA, but working a shitty job as a Dallas hotel bellman. I beginning to think “True Blood” isn’t very realistic.

first?
-
It's not meant to be. Charlaine Harris' novels are campy and fun. HBO has been a lot more serious and dark than the books are. I think maybe because you can't hear Sookie's hilarious inner monologue all the time.
-
Reminds me of Buffy sometimes a little bit too much, but it is a lot of fun.
-
Why are there still pay movie channels with all the DVDs Blue Rays, downloads these days? I don't get it.
-
If your complaint is that its unrealistic you're wildly missing the point.
-
would anyone be watching this?
*crickets* -
that think True Blood is awesome?
-
Preacher? No? Thank God for SHO, AMC, and FX.
-
i *probably* wouldn't be half as into this show. and if there was no nudity, i might never have known the miracle that is lizzy caplan's spectacular orbs. there is a reason why my girlfriend and i call this "vampire sex show."
-
So should Michael Lehmann. Good for TV, maybe, but less so for the cinema.
-
It's because people like slamming anything popular. I didn't really like Twilight but I understand its appeal to the mass public. I think a lot of people enjot True Blood because it tells a good story and shows some T&A and the vampires are more Anne Rice and less Twilight. Same romanticism but different storytelling.
-
Anyone that is steeped in mythology know what Maryann is supposed to represent? Is she a witch? A Succubus? Anybody care to guess?
-
Okay, I can only hope the ones here who are getting on Herc's ass about the show "not being realistic" are equally kidding around. If not, you're a moron. First season was VERY watchable. Second season so far has been just as watchable, almost, but Paquin's ta-ta's make it so much easier.
-
something that you can find out by googling wikipedia. Since the tv series is based on books, all the info is out there. I don't want to spoil it for those who want to be surprised. I haven't read the books, but I did google her because I was curious.
-
to star in one of your Cougar-centric porn films!! I would definitely pay to see that! Gotta love them cougars
-
Better writing and storylines. Everybody has gotten settled in their roles. I'm surprised anybody is arguing the first season is better.
-
Beginning to think?? Beginning??? Have you watched it? At all??? This show does not traffic in realism. And I love it all the same for it. Perhaps more.
-
Herc doesn't get a pass for that. Sarcasm only works in certain circumstances. It that was an attempt, it was an idiotic one.

Dead-end jobs are for those who live on the fringe of society.
by stereotypical evil archer
You know, people like psychics, shapeshifters, vampires, etc. Get real, psychics don't work for the CIA, if they did the USA would be a little more imperialistic (sort of like George W. thinking Evangelical's god was on his side).
-
And, as has been made plainly obvious, if Herc doesn't like it, it doesn't get much attention. Several people practically had to beg on the Entourage TB before he put this up, and when he did, he decided to nonchalantly tell us what was going to happen for the rest of season 2. That'll teach us. But seriously Herc, all is forgiven if you keep this TB going every week. As for tonight, I'm really starting to dig on Jessica, I think a lot of humor is going to come from the relationship of her and Bill and Sookie, and now Hoyt. I love that they gave Jessica a human love interest to counter Bill's...and Hoyt is perfect for it. However, was I the only one disappointed that Lafayette WASN'T made vampire by Eric? I think his character would have ended up even more fun to watch as a newborn bloodsucker (and they can practically do whatever they want with his character since in the books he dies during what became season 1).

Martyanne is based partially on what the charecter was in the bo
by yeti
Don't forget Tara, Lorena, and the Queen didn't appear until later in the series (book-wise) they weren't in the second book - Living Dead in Dallas at all.
-
Maenad. That is all.
-
And thanks for the talkbalk, Herc... I'm off to watch tonight's episode as we speak.
-
Super curious to see how he does, based on his surprisingly subpar episodes from season one.
-
Keeps on getting better and better... acting, writing, everything...
-
its just grown on me out of nowhere, every things in sync. if you haven't given it a shot, its well worth viewing
-
is gorgeous!
-
When most Vampire shows suck!
-
Cracked me up, seeing him pop up in the background dancing while Eric was on the phone just hit the right funny bone. Made me think of Snoopy's dance, only dirty.
-
tonight's episode was easily the worst of Season 2...the first 3 episodes were fantastic...this was one was just OK...is MaryAnne going to be throwing an orgy party every week?...seriously we have seen this in every episode so far this season...I also liked Lafayette's character much better last season...this season he just doesn't have the same flamboyance personality
-
i was totally hoping to see that too!! and was really let down when it didn't happen. what i wanted to see was lafayette trying to be a closeted vampire.... as the out and proud gay dude that he is, i thought seeing him encounter a side of himself that he would have been ashamed enough of to try and hide-- especially something as dramamtic as being a vampire-- would have been some really good drama. but i guess the writers of this thing had other ideas. that's ok. which so far means waiting to see what about lafayette doing cock push-ups after drinking eric's blood was more interesting than that, i guess, but i'm sure they're going somewhere.
-
Why don't Sookie and Barry work at better jobs? Because they don't want to be turned into lab rats. They're afraid docs will poke and prod at them to find out what makes them tick and keep 'em locked up. It's explained better in the books. And Yeti, Tara WAS in the books from the beginning. She's just majorly different in the books that you probably don't remember her because she's white and really a very very minor character in the books. In fact, she's a significant part of the end of this book, Living Dead in Dallas..... But other than that, she's a doormat in the books. The TV Tara is much better.
-
oh yes.
-
I swear to God, each episode just grinds to a halt during Jason's scenes. He's such a boring character and he's given a disproportionate amount of screen time. I fast forward through all his scenes, and long for more of
Skarsgard's fantastic, gorgeous, subtle Eric. Why don't Ball and his minions understand this? -
was the funniest True Blood moment yet.
-
I was hooked in season 1 but this season is just getting old somehow. I'll still watch but I hope things really pick up.
-
I 'understand' the appeal of Twighlight to brainless teenieboppers, but why it would appeal to anyone other than a 13 year old girl afraid to watch actual vampire films as opposed to films about emo shitsticks, I couldn't tell you. True Blood however at least tries to portray vampires as they have been portrayed since Stoker was writing - seductive, dangerous and vicious all at the same time. It's a great show, has good humour, slick writing and also showcases gorgeous naked women, which is always a plus. It's got some of the best starting credits I've seen, also. Terrific show. Michelle Forbes needs to be the next one getting highly naked, though. With Sookie, in a bath of clear jello.
-
...anyone here comparing it to the unutterably awful Buffy the frickin' Vampire Layer can fuck off. This is a GOOD show.
-
not reading this one
-
I loved this latest episode. So funny! Season 2 is really great.. I was bored quite a bit during season 1, after the initial episodes.
-
TWILIGHT has no sex and vampires that hang around high schools, making it strictly for the kiddies and people with purity rings. TRUE BLOOD, meanwhile, has plenty of sex and vampires that own clubs where all kinds of freaky shit goes down, making it more for the rest of us.
-
. . . I can't believe so many rip on it here. On second thought, sure I do. I end up dying for the next one every week. And yes, In_Rainbows, the red head is drop dead gorgeous. Especially in that scene where she went to Merlotte's.
-
I finally got into this show a couple weeks ago and finally caught up to episode 3 of season 2 yesterday. It's a good show, there's lots to like about it. There's always a few little mysteries going, there's some GREAT gore and nudity, comedy, and the romance novel writing for the female viewers.
It should be interesting to see how the show feels with some of the storyline branching off into Dallas instead of being confined the the small Louisiana town... -
. . . in another talkback, but if whoever plays Bill were a bit older, I'd say he'd make a damn fine Roland Deschain.
-
Not sure if anyone had answered that in the previous post, but she is supposed to be a desciple/follower of Pan from Greek Mythology. They were famous for throwing wild parties, eating animals live, and other such freaky antics.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maenad -
I thought the Maenads were basically human, just out of control with drinking, dancing and sex. But during last night's dance party orgy, Maryann also sprouted some giant claws that made her look partially Slitheen (one for the Whovians there). Is she more than just a Maenad or am I missing something?
-
. . . it was Maryanne who became that horned creature that clawed Sookie and most likely left the scars on the new waitress's back.
-
I enjoyed season 1 but it took a while for me to really get into it. Whereas this season I've been enjoying it from the first moment. There's been less nudity so far though I think? That preacher's wife needs to get her tits out before the season's out anyway.
-
Anyone else want to venture what the pig means?
-
True Blood is definitely adult fare.
-
Although Maenads were mostly orgiastic, cannibalistic, wild women who served as high priestesses of Dionysus, they were sometimes demigods with powers and the like. The horns and claws would represent her true form and the pig is probably her familiar (quite possibly her butler). The books really don't explain her that much and the show will take it in its own direction anyway.
-
That's why I wondering if Maryann was some Circe-like sorceress/sexual energy succubus, but it sounds like she's a Maenad with some bonus features included.
On a side note, has Michelle Forbes actually gotten hotter since the days she was Ensign Ro on NEXT GEN? I'm thinking so.
-
Sookie isn't a psychic, she's a telepath. A big difference as the first one would keep her from getting into so much darn trouble all the time.
-
I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not but when it premiered last year there wasn't much else on that I cared about so I thought, what the hell, HBO used to create awesome series. I'm glad I tuned in. This show is great!
-
On posts concerning True Blood, I always ask if someone who was a fan of Six Feet Under (i.e. me) would enjoy True Blood. I've heard some pretty horrible teams from all sides of the spectrum (hipsters, aint it coolers, etc.), but at the same time, I can see this show being hated on due to the recent popularity of vampires. So if anyone was also a fan of Ball's work on Six Feet Under, would this interest me? Or should I just wait for the third Golden Age of Television to show up?
-
Six Feet Under is one of my all time favorite television shows, and I enjoy the hell out of True Blood. That said, the two shows are not easily comparable. 6FU was more dramatic in tone with Ball's distinct humor spattered throughout. True Blood, however, is a bit of the opposite. It's more comedic in tone in my opinion with Ball's wry wit on full display and drama interspersed throughout. But TB is also very much geared towards a more adult crowd than fare such as Twilight or the average vampire movie schlock.
-
It's fun and not overly serious plus it's social commentary with Vampires.
-
Just sayin'. ($1 to Babe), it'll prove that the voters had it in for Whedon. And that they really like genre shows, as long as they're on HBO.
-
Then I watched the first episode of this. Been hooked since.
-
According to Ball, Six Feet Under studied people living or contending with boundaries, either personal and/or societal. On the other hand, True Blood studies the terrors of intimacy.
-
In another talk back I wrote that the Sookie Stackhouse mystery stories that I have read are light-weight reading: a guilty pleasure. Alan Ball is being guided by the content of the stories and they do provide narrative direction. But I find the series much more than a so-called guilty pleasure. It has the wit and humor of the stories with an incisive observations of human nature. This is good stuff and if you like the vampire genre it is worth watching.
-
This show won me over with its weirdly humorous vibe. While my wife has read the books, I haven't, but that seems to enhance my enjoyment, not really knowing what's going to happen. I would like to see Jason fall out with the ant-vamp fanatics. I loves seein' a perfectly good hellraiser backslide.

Damn caffeine.
-
Much better mystery and humor this season, but actually whenever this show tries to make observations on human nature is when it's at its worse.
-
No question.. it's obvious.
-
Male frontal nudity! and lots of it. Hung better not disappoint either. I'm looking at you Thomas Jane. ;)
-
You know it will happen. He'll show the Reverend the proper technique for staking the holy poonanny. Also, I thought Evan Rachel Wood was supposed to be in more than one episode.
