Ryan Reynolds Is Green Lantern!!!

Published at:  Jul 10, 2009 8:54:29 PM CDT

Beaks here...

Honestly, if Ryan Reynolds was interested from the get, I don't know why they bothered screen-testing Justin Timberlake and Bradley Cooper in the first place. Now had Michael Fassbender been in serious contention, that would've been a different story. But compared to Timberlake and Cooper, Reynolds just cuts a more classic leading man figure. He's also been poised on the brink of superstardom for years now, so why not finally nudge him over the edge?

GREEN LANTERN will be directed by the steady Martin Campbell. The screenplay is by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Principal photography should begin this January in Australia.

It goes without saying that this places Fox's Deadpool movie on hold.

I would've broken down and gone postal on all involved. As I said in the other GL thread, Reynolds isn't my first choice - Fillion,
Browder, Matthew Fox - but if they lay off the wise-ass shtick and keep it more so wry, like Iron Man, this could work. Most of all Reynolds has to believe in the character. No nudge-nudge, wink-wink, I'm Green Lantern. Be Jordan and then be a Green Lantern.

As Hal Jordan, he isn't bad but still a little to "wimpy" for my taste. But I really think that the lead and the director are secondary to the script. It is the plot of a super-hero movie that makes it or breaks it in my opinion.

Hopefully Reynolds will make this role unique the same way Downey did with Iron Man. He's always been a charismatic actor and he's always been very good at comedy. I've never been into Green Lantern as a character and don't really know much about him beyond his weakness for the color yellow. That said, I hope this plays to Reynolds strengths is a film with good characterization, awesome action and a great sense of humor. If it can pull all those things off, I'll be there opening day.

He was in that terrible UK Buffy rip-off Hex, and he was pretty cheesy in it. Plus, he's too old (or his hard living and/or genes have made him look too old). Reynolds is the best choice of the lot - and I say thank God they got it right this time.

Hal Jordan is an experienced Test Pilot. He is in good shape, yes, but he has better things to do all day than work on his abs and keeps his body fat down.
I think Reynolds is ok, but I'm not going to get excited by him. Hal Jordan was based on Paul Newman - no doubt a handsome actor, but also someone who was a little more rugged than Reynolds.

I'm not going to avoid it because of him, but the odds that I'll like it are very very slim. I didn't even like him in Wolverine. I liked that character much better when he was the other guy. I snuck into that Sandra Bullock movie last week after Public Enemies because I didn't want to run through the parking lot in a thunderstorm. Watching that was almost as bad so I eventually decided to make a break for it.

    by chewtoy

Seriously, how high was demand for it? Reynold's attachment was the only thing the movie had going for it, and he's not going to be interested in jumping from one lead comic hero flick to another... bad for the career. If GL hits, then he'll be doing sequels to that for the next 8 years or so. Unless Fox goes all vindictive again and makes it just to have something to open opposite Green Lantern, I'd say Deadpool will never see production.

I have very mixed feelings aabout Ryan Reynolds. He plays the likable smart ass pretty well. I thought Van Wilder showcased that side of him best. But It's a persona that follows him in everything he does. When saw the press photos from Blade Trinity I thought he looked like a real bad ass. But when I saw the movie it was "Fuck, he's Van Wilder the Vampire Slayer". To be honest I would rather see an unknown play this part, but it could be an opportunity for Reynolds to play against type. We'll see.

for Deadpool. A spinoff movie should never happen though they will try, with some horrible recast, hackjob. Now if only Warner Bros can get their act together and get a Superman film together, with a great story and a villian worthy of Supes, with Luthor playing a background or cameo role, then maybe just maybe this will be the turning of the tide from Marvel to DC as the great superhero film company.

Cast by someone who has never read a GL comic

    by gooseud

Hal Jordan isn't jokey. He isnt pretty, or super cut (being uber-ripped has nothing to do with being a GL, physical training doesnt really have alot to do with it) He's an ex fighter pilot and the ultimate alpha male. He's the only one in the comics with the balls to consistently stand up to (and stare down) Batman (who despises him for it). So answer me this: Can you see RYAN FUCKING REYNOLDS staring down Bale's Batman without an ounce of fear? Really? Really Really? Because if you cant, then this casting sucks. I'm not trying to sound like an uber-geek here, anyone who reads the weekly comics column knows I actually have kind of a mixed view of that character and comic, but Reynolds is the Flash, and definately is Deadpool. What he ISNT is Hal Jordan.

And that is why I put wimpy in parathesis and explicitly said "for my taste."
You wanna tell me he is Audie Murphy reborn, pretty boy who is a lot tougher than he looks, fine. That is your call. But all I can see is someone who spends a lot of time in the gym working on his core and working on shaping muscles instead of making them functional like a boxer or a fighter would. You ever see soldiers Mr. Beaks? They aren't build massive or completely cut, but they are in great shape. They focus on practical stuff, not about what makes them look good. Not even boxers and MMA fighters are built like actors - they at least have some mass added on.
Like I said when I see Reynolds I see a guy who has put in a lot of time in the gym not doing practical workouts but a lot of body sculpting. And sorry, but that makes me think of the actors I see at my gym or the guys in Boystown here in LA, not actual tough guy. And yes, that is only my opinion.

    by kosherwookie

I love Reynolds' work... And I'm probably blaspheming here by saying that I LOVED Blade: Trinity. I didn't follow the BLADE comics at all; my only knowledge of Blade comes from the films. Sorry, but I can only handle so much "brooding, tortured goth-leather Seeeeeriouuus" before it's time for comic relief, which is why I loved Trinity (and especially Reynolds' irreverent character). The fact that it almost killed Harry is just a bonus... And I took special delight in the black-leather "I pattern my life after Blade" types going into shock during the film...

But when has he demonstrated an ability to be anything but a sarcastic, quippy type of hero? Yes, he is built like an underwear model - not a fighter. But that isn't the issue. Charisma is. Bruce Willis, Steve McQueen, Liam Neeson etc, etc = Believable tough guys on screen. Ryan Reynolds = Doing lots of crunches and avoiding carbs does not a bad ass make. He comes across as camp as much as anything - and this is coming from someone who actually thinks he's pretty good.I mean, in Blade 3 he basically came of as the damsel in distress to Snipes and Biel.

    by cotton mcknight

Honestly, I don't remember him in any of the movies I have seen him in. He has this vanilla quality that just makes me forget who is in the leading male role. However, whenever I was at the bookstore, I would see the guy on the cover of various magazines. The pictures were so over the top, they were hard to miss. So yeah, the only opinion of him that I had was those jack nasty pictures I would see at the rack on barnes and noble. But then, the new Entertainment Weekly came out and it just flat out made me nauseaus. Not only is he there AGAIN, he is has some sort of weird skin condition going on that makes me literally throw up in my mouth when I see it. So for the producers of this movie, they have just lost a ticket sale because there is no WAY I am sitting through two hours watching that guy. Ugh.

Unless you can offer up a viable alternative, I don't know what to tell you. And Reynolds wasn't "soft" in SMOKIN' ACES or ADVENTURELAND. He's a damn good actor when given decent material. Less worried about Reynolds than the movie itself.

    by sci_fi_wasabe

I think Reynolds will be great and will hopefully elevate the movie (ala Downey in Iron Man). Reynolds was the only good thing in Blade 3 (his character was in the wrong movie, but still a solid performance). I'm pretty sure they won't be joking it up (especially in the Dark Knight aftermath), but they'll probably have some light moments (Iron Man again). Jordan's supposed to be cocky (test pilot) and I'm pretty sure Ryan can pull of cocky. All that rom-com practice should help the chemistry with Carol Ferris (I assume the character's in the movie). I didn't catch it, but I've heard he was the best thing about the Sandra Bullock comedy that recently did pretty well at the box office. As long as they treat the material seriously and also have some fun with it, it could be good. I mean, after all it's a guy in a green and black suit with a "magic" ring (that can make anything out of energy) working as a galactic cop for some blue midgets...not a tortured psychological drama. I just hope he doesn't make his voice all gravelly when he has the mask on. I mean, that would totally take me out of the movie.

Cooper is too weasley to play Hal Jordan. I'll be there opening weekend now, barring any ridiculously lame footage being released prior to it opening, but I doubt it. GREAT casting. by booster gold lives

I like Reynolds. He's not a great actor, but he's got a certain watchability. So long as they avoid making Hal a wiseass in the broadest sense, I think this could work. Now the rest of the cast can be filled in and we can get a sense of what they're shooting for. For example, if they get a heavyweight actor to play Sinestro, as opposed to, say, Will Arnett...or if they go character actor-heavy with the rest of the cast, which to me would indicate they want to immerse the audience in the world they want to create, rather than call attention to the cast. This is a good start, but now I want to see the rest of the pieces fall into place before I cheer or choke.

    by outlaw24

Dane Cook and Ryan Reynolds are virtually interchangeable when it comes to comedic timing, and they're both in good shape. Deadpool is more on Dane Cook's level. Ryan Reynolds should be in a tentpole superhero project anyway. Although in my opinion, that superhero project should be "The Flash," but GL will be fine for him too because he has the right cavalier attitude to pull off Hal Jordan. It's just not the "fits like a glove" casting that the Flash would've been.

    by rakafraker

First, if you don't like the casting, I'm sure we'll see the GL's in time, and they can't be played by Reynolds.Second, Martin Campbell is directing, and even Zorro was at least watchable, but Goldeneye and Casino Royale give him a pass, just for re-invigorating the Bond franchise. Twice. Lastly, if you don't know who Green Lantern is you're in for a surprise. It's one part Star Wars (many different alien species are GLs), and one part Superman (or what should have been Superman, see my Superman TB idea), with some Batman/Iron Man-type personae thrown in for good measure.I think we're in for a treat.

First the guy from the note book and now Reynolds. He is too gay to play Green Lantern. Only Hugo Weaving as Sinestro and Ron Perlman or Micky Rourke as Kilowag can save this movie now.

    by sherman_lives

I like Zooey Deschanel for Carol Ferris, and two actors who have played Sinestro on animated series keep coming to mind: Ted Levine and John De Lancie. Though they're probably looking for bigger names... They could do like Batman '89 and get somebody HUGE for Sinestro... Tom Cruise, perhaps? Then again, it's probably against his religion to play a space villain.

This movie is going to be a trip.

    by chezking

It's going to be a Special FX extravaganza. The potential to take the audience on an adventure like what the concept of Green Lantern has to offer is limitless. I am no big Ryan Reynolds fan, but I trust he'll pull it off well. So long as he isn't obnoxiously jokey like he was in Blade Trinity. God he was unbearable in that! Martin Campbell is a smart director. I hope this movie is fun but with serious action, and a good balance of humor and drama, on the level of Iron Man.
Martin Campbell can definitely deliver. This should be good.

I would have much rather seen him as Deadpool...in a Deadpool movie and also popping up in the various Marvel movies to come. If he HAS to be in a DC movie, why not the Flash? Reynolds is perfect for Wally West, but Hal Jordan??? He's an OK choice,I guess. Better than Timberlake or Jack Black would have been, but nowhere near as cool as Fillion would be in the role. By the way,Fillion and Rain Wilson met with the folks at DC today...I hear through the grapevine that Fillion WILL be cast as Hal Jordan....in the upcoming Green Lantern Motion Comics that DC is producing. You heard it here first kids....

Face the facts: GREEN LANTERN looks great in a comic book panel...but how can they translate that to the screen? It will be a miracle if the movie works because it will need to be pretty heavy in the science fiction department and NOT one of Hollywood's "look at me, I have super powers" shtick like HANCOCK. They need to tell a story, not try and be clever with action set pieces.

I honestly dont mind Reynolds being cast. He isn't my first choice by far. Like many of the people here, I would have preferred getting Fillion or even Boreanaz (who did a damn fine job voicing the character in New Frontier) into the part, but I much prefer Reynolds to Jack Black or Justin Timberlake. I know he is a very capable actor when given the opportunity, but that won't matter if they are trying to make Hal Jordan into a smart-ass. I just hope they cast him for his largely untapped potential for dramatic work and not his ability to crack wise on command. I trust that Martin Campbell knows what hes doing here as he knows infinitly more about the plot, characters, and world of this film then we do. Reynolds isn't so far off model for the Hal Jordan type that I doubt it (like I would have with Jack Black), so for now Im reserving judgment until we have a better idea of the movie being made. I will say this though, if they introduce a Kyle Rayner in a future film it would be fantastic to see a Joseph Gordon Levitt type in the part.

"Wolverine" still made money, but I think there are diminishing returns in the works, financially speaking. I almost would like to see a continuation with the younger kids becoming the X-Men, but I think in Fox's mind, X-Men equals Wolverine. How long before Fox gives up making spin-offs and prequels? Reboots are probably more likely. They will never want to let the meal ticket go.

Your example of Bruce Willis as a 'bad ass' action star is interesting, since before Die Hard, he was primarily known as a comic actor. Remember Moonlighting? Between Blade III and Wolverine, Reynolds has more action chops than Willis did.

I've never read one GL comic, but love Deadpool to death... and I would've made the same decision. Star as GL - one of DC's top heroes - for the studio that made Dark Knight or star(sort of -- behind that mask and those scars) as Deadpool - one of Marvel's sort-of-well-known heroes who is, depending on the writer, a glorified Spider-Man clone - for the studio that gave us Wolverine. And X3. And the F4 movies. And Elektra. Yeah... tough choice, that.

Great news and a coup for WB's to take Reynolds away from the small time dead end Deadpool film with crappy Fox studios. Now the GL film has a chance to be epic and fun much like Iron Man. Timberlake or Cooper as a lead in a big time franchise type of sci film like GL ??

What a joke that would have been!

Now things can get rolling with the potentially awesome GL film! Reynolds has screen presence, charisma and versatility and is a solid choice! An Oscar caliber actor is not needed for this role, a fun charimatic actor with screen presence and fit is needed.

I see what you are saying. But that argument would only really apply if we were talking about RR being cast in Blade 3. Ryan went from playing a smart alecky frat boy called Van Wilder to a smart alecky (and pretty much ineffectual) vampire killer. Unconvincingly at that.Bruce went from playing a smart alecky (and often ineffectual) detective called Dave Addison to playing John Mother Fucking McClane. A man who threatens to kill, cook and fucking eat terrorists. Convincingly. That's the difference. Bruce aced it first time. Ryan has been up to bat numerous times (Blade, Smokin Aces, and even Amityville to an extent) and misses every time. That's not "action chops", that's a good agent. It's not enough to just be in the films, you have to actually be good in them too. Seriously, I like him and I think he's funny - but even when explicitly asked to be tough or a bit heavy (I'm thinking Smokin Aces specifically- as opposed to Blade where it would seem he was supposed to be a bit wussy)he's got nothing. He is a good actor, but his range just doesn't seem to encompass toughness. But, I'd rather have a good movie than a bad one so here's hoping he pulls it off.

will we get reynolds OR hal jordan?

    by orange cinema

one of the main reasons i loved reynolds for deadpool, was because the role he is known for (the same role he ALWAYS plays) is so dead on to the wade wilson persona. it was a match made in heaven. so, while i have nothing against reynolds, i cannot help but responsibly worry and ask: will this be the interpretation of hal jordan that we receive? if so, then shame on all parties involved. anyone who knows GL hal, knows that his confidence/arrogance is much different than the type reynolds brings to the plate. both are fun, but it is not the hal we deserve to see. we'll soon see, but i am hesitant to think we will get anything other than the same/only character that he can bring to the table.

The Deadpool movie would have been horrible.

    by spifftacular squirrel girl

    It's Fox.

They would have just signed on some guy who just finished directing a Gym Class Heroes music video to helm it. Deadpool, who is supposed to be this badass mercenary, would have completely watered down to make it fit for a PG-13 rating and there's no way the producers would hire someone like Reynolds and keep his face all scarred up through out the whole movie, no matter what the actor says otherwise.

Trust me, this is a blessing in disguise, people.

    by orange cinema

will that be DC's direction with their big films? if so - rock the fuck on! i can't think of anything cooler than a GL film which is on a star wars scale, that meets the comic genre. we know it'll be a franchise, so let's hope they take time to plan out the intricacies of the hal vs. sinestro rivalry. it could be very epic/different. i would've rather seen cooper in the role - i think he could've risen to a dramatic level that reynolds does not possess, but we'll se. in fact, i gotta stop dwelling on how bummed i am that cooper is not hal otherwise i'll never be able to give GL a fair chance. i just think for cooper's career and for our viewing pleasure it would've been the best film we could have gotten. dammit.

I think cooper could have been better, but I don't think reynolds is a bad choice. I just hope they know that he can't be too smart-assy and cracking jokes all the time (that is Guy Gardner's schtick) and play up his cockiness/self assured attitude which makes Hal Jordan the best at wielding a ring powered by pure will.

But it's good to get this out of the way so we geeks can argue who/what else should be in the movie. Who should the Villain be? How much of the GL Corps will appear?

    by karmo

Reynolds is an interesting choice. I don't know if he is still going to do the Deadpool movie, but it seems very unlikely. It's interesting that Warner basically stole away the star of Fox's Deadpool movie, given the whole debacle over Watchmen and the trouble that Fox gave Warner over the making of that film. Personally, I like Reynolds, and I think he will do fine, but I wonder if when making this decision the fact that they would get to stick it to Fox a little made choosing Reynolds just a little bit easier.

The Sinestro War had too much history behind it to be used in an orgin movie. I understand that this was probably greenlit base don the success of Geoff Johns' GL run with rebirth and Sinestro but that does not mean you have to shoehorn in Sinestro.
Stick to the actual orgin: Abin Sur is badly wounded while fighting Legion (A collective hive mind formed into one body) and is forced to crash land on earth where upon his death, the ring finds the next worthy candidate, Hal. Hal must now travel to OA to warn the Gaurdians of Legion and then is trained to become the next Lantern of sector 2814 in order to help the corp stop Legion. Simple. OG.

it is very conspiritorial, I'm just throwing it out there. If you wanted to derail Fox's Deadpool movie, I'd say taking their star is a good way to do it. It may just be complete coincidence, but I don't think for a moment that anyone at Warner is above sticking the knife in Fox a little after Fox took them to court over Watchmen. I'm not saying that I think Reynolds is a terrible choice, I'm just saying that by choosing him to play GL, Warner gets a little bonus in the process. And if that's the case, who can blame them really? After the crap that Fox has been churning out and for just being assholes in general, they kind of deserve it.

I think Ryan Reynolds is great and fits the part. He's just starred in a lot of bad movies. His Wade Wilson (at least at the beginning of the movie, the part where he was actually Deadpool) was the best part of "Wolverine," and he does deserve the opportunity to do something more than supporting roles in sub-par Marvel flicks and romantic comedies.

    DC Universe

    by franconeroluv

I think this would also be a ood opportunity for Warner to begin making the Hero movies fit into a single universe like Marvel is doing. I'm not saying they should go make every DC superhero into a film franchise, just to start showing that the universe Hal Jordan lives in is the same universe as Clark Kent, Bruce Wayne, and Oliver Queen. This can easily be done without throwing in Batman or Superman, but to have the character meet a guy named Barry Allen or Mention Metropolis/Gotham in a newscast, etc. Doing this would make any future JLA film not only more natural, but would provide for broader opportunities since the history of the characters would already be mostly laid out... Just sayin'

It was on the old Cinescape site, now known as Mania.com...and he I.D. himself as a close, or best friend of Reynold's. He liked all my post, and even said I should be his production partner based upon how I rewrote a script outline for a movie and posted it on the web site(not kidding!!!), but he had a very terse reaction to my disinterest in him as an actor. He appeared disheartened by my critiques toward him, and that is the last time he communicated with me, and or, posted on that web site. At that point, I knew it was Reynold's himself. He had been campaigning to become The Flash-- talking to the fans and hearing out their reactions, but not really trying to direct opinion either way. I felt really bad about it, his shocked reaction to my opinion about him as an actor, as you should never kill anybody else's dream...but I was surgical in my comments, and I hope not meanspirited, but I feel that not every actor is meant for every role--for instance, Robert DeNiro would not make a good Superman, and Denzel Washington would not make a good Jimmy Olsen. My point??? Not every great, or good actor, fits every role. Forcing an actor into a role is just stunt casting like placing Meryl Streep (spelling?) in Mama Mia...she's a great actor, but that was just stunt casting at its worst!!! As for Reynolds, he seems like a nice guy, and although I was for him becoming The Flash, I think that he was more suited for that role, than he is for The Green Lantern, but I'll tell you, even when he disagreed with me about my assessment of him on Cinescape (aka Mania.com), he bowed-out like a gentleman, and you gotta like someone like that. He's poised to be a star! This should make sure he never achieves that goal. Sad to say, but this will DEFINITELY NOT HAPPEN - this project will hit a snag of some kind about "creative differences" and, after the studio has spent $30m or $40m worth of development, wind up with movie in "development hell" that will never see the light of day. Just like JUSTICE LEAGUE. Way to go, DC!

Despite what you might think. the build is the least of my problem. The only reason I brought up his build is because YOU brought up how Reynolds is 6'2" and cut. I only brought up the counter point that you can be cut and still not project toughness, like a male model who is ripped but far from looking tough. Reynold's build usually resembles a models not a fighters.
But even if he changed his workout and go a much more realistic or at least non-narcissistic build (which I could easily see), Reynolds is not known for projecting strength or toughness. Sorry, nothing against the guy but that is true. He is the guy in a romantic comedy or the wise-ass, but tough guy, please. And while Hal Jordan might not be some martial arts expert or a super-spy in his secret identity, he is still the guy who will fly experimental airplanes and then face off against Batman in a test of wills (as gooseud so intelligently pointed out).
Remember, Hal Jordan was SELECTED to be the Green Lantern of Earth. The criteria was courage and willpower, two traits I don't think Reynolds radiates. He literally has "the Right Stuff." Not only can't I imagine Reynolds facing off against Bale's Batman, but I can't imagine Reynolds in the movie the Right Stuff and play a character that Sam Shepard, Scott Glenn, Ed Haris, Fred Ward and Dennis Quad not only respect but treat as a peer. That is who Hal Jordan is.
Maybe he can pull it off, but I am just going by his past work and saying I am not to excited by his choice. He hasn't demonstrated that he can yet.
Oh, and yes I would probably be disappointed in whomever they cast. Let's not kid ourselves, we are living in the dark ages of Hollywood movies, especially in acting and leading men and women. Just like how Hollywood has a big of fascination with casting rail thin woman who are completely wrong for the part, it also has started casting me who look more like underwear models instead of real people OR symbols of masculinity. We are back to the days of Henry Wilson and his "beefcake" craze of the 50's and 60s. The Tab Hunters, Robert Wagners, Troy Donahues and Doug McClures. The handsome actor types that Troy McClure from the Simpsons parodied. When Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake and Ryan Reynolds are the guys you get to play the bravest man on earth, you know we are in trouble in the leading man department.

Yeah, well, remember - read the Wikipedia page about SUPERMAN RETURNS to find out how much Hollywood knows about superheroes (everything) and how much Hollywood HATES about what it knows about superheroes (everything). People are wrong - it's not that Hollywood doesn't "get" comic books. They get it, all right. They just HATE it, and they hate you, and they want your money but they'd also love to watch you dance on fire for them, because that's just how much the Hollywood machine hates you - because you're a thinking audience and you don't just sup the pab. So, Hollywood takes what you love - your "product" - comic books - and gleefully and giddily ruins it 1) to make money off the common idiot out there who doesn't give a car about anything in comics and 2) to make you dance on fire inside and hurt. Hollywood HATES you.

    by thusspakespymunk

Consider that John Peters has said as much - that he would basically do ANYTHING in a movie - polar bears, giant robot spiders, gay robots, space dogs, etc. - rather than actually do anything from established comics continuity. He would rather do -ANYTHING- than give the fans what they want. Ever wonder why? It's not -all- for the dollar ... because some people out there would pay the dollar to see continuity. No - he specifically HATES the stuff comic book fans hate ... and would rather fill his movie with ANYTHING than add ONE thing that would make comic fans happy. Consider it.

Green Lantern needs a Ryan Reynolds

    by bishopfan85

OK guys it's time to fess it up, the more super heroes that make it to the big screen the more they start seeming more and more alike. Iron Man did a little comical twist on Tony Starks "Darkish Knightish" simmilarities by making sure he preferred being the playboy more than he did being the hero but the fact was he's still a millionaire playboy who runs out and saves the world at night. Green Lantern is Superman with an alien ring without being an alien himself whose "kryptonite" is the color yellow...If they tried to take this character too seriously the entire movie would be be too much of the same thing. I don't think I could have gotten too excited about this one without a lead like Reynolds. I just hope he's still lined up for the Flash as that role more than any other super hero seems to fit him to the tee.

Yes I have read the comic books. And if you read my post just above you'll see that it wasn't the build per say that bothered me, but his presence. I only described my problems with his build because Mr. Beaks used it as an example of why he is tough. I offered a counter opinion.
But just for the sake of argument, here is an image of Ryan Reynolds:
    http://tinyurl.com/288chd
Now would you say he reminds you more of this guy:

    Or these guys:

(And yes, I do admit it is an unfair comparison).

Totally disagree. comparing him to spider-man because they both crack wise is a bit of an over-simplification. Spider-man calls people lame brain so they don't know he's scared shitless at the moment. Deadpool Wise-cracks (usually to the voice in his head) because it makes things more fun and because of this he is probably the most fun Marvel character. The character is not supposed to be taken that seriously, it's just supposed to be silly fun, in fact more so than any character he seems like he would be (at least) just as fun to write as he is to read. But that's just one geeks opinion.

To deny that Batman is Marvel-esque is to deny the sky is blue. I know he pre-dated Marvel, but I'm using that term to sum up that Marvel creates humans with powers that have to deal with them as a problem, whereas DC creates gods. Use that context, and he falls on the Marvel side of the fence.

And yes, I very much DO know what I'm talking about. I'm probably one of the few people who know a shitload about it (not just as a fan).

Are you talking about the movie or the comic? I would say Batman in the movies is very "Marvel-esque", but I would politely disagree with the comic book. Obviously Marvel influenced, but I don't think he suffers from super-hero is a problem like other characters (in fact, he is one of the few characters where that really doesn't pop up much).

Deadpool: Any great stories to tell?

    by franconeroluv

Well the Idea of Deadpool teaming up with his own zombified head seems pretty awesome to me... but then again comics are one of the few things I'm not completely jaded to. I like Deadpool stories. Recently, I thought his tie-in to Secret Invasion was a better plot-line than anything in Secret Invasion. I'm sorry if it's not your bag, but the proper thing to say would be: "I really don't like Deadpool", not "Deadpool Sucks". Sstating an opinion like it's a fact is merely over-valuing yourself. Nothing in any medium is going to appeal to everyone, but that does not actually make it bad, just not everyone's thing. For example: I'm not the biggest Silver Surfer fan, but that does not mean I think they should stop writing Silver Surfer. It just means I won't be reading Silver Surfer. Repeat after me people: "OPINIONS ARE NOT FACT, WE SHOULD NOT EXPRESS OUR OPINIONS AS IF THEY ARE OR SHOULD BE FACT".

not a soldier or a boxer, his muscles don't have to be functional but they DO have to look impressive.
Plus, that kind of showy musculature is exactly how most comics are drawn.
Finally, he is more than capable of ditching the jokey demeanour when needed - see the terrible Amytiville remake for proof of that. Awful, awful movie but a nicely restrained turn by Reynolds. Give him a chance before slating a film that has yet to even begin shooting.

Never seen Van Wilder. I don't resent him because he gets to fuck Scarlett. Edward Burns gets to fuck Christy Turlington, AND write and direct shitty movies every few years.Nathan Fillion just seemed so perfect in that fan made trailer. I'm not homophobic but anyone who thinks Fillion is old and/or out of shape while praising Reynolds is obviously queerer than a pink $3 bill and deeply in denial about it.

Who gives a shit about a Deadpool movie???

    by nice marmot

It would have been a lame, PG-13 shitfest w/out an ounce of blood or balls. Only Mel Gibson or Stallone in the director's chair would have gotten me excited. They seem like the only 2 that can get something truly kick ass made these days.

Cooper looked a bit more like the classic Hal Jordan, but I think Ryan is a very good choice. As much as I love the man as a wisecracking superhuman ass-kicker, it should be interesting to see how he plays Jordan both buttoned-down and intergalactic.

Both of those titles have been totally kicking ass for several years. And now, NOW, to here that this UTTER FUCKING TOOL, this Frat Boy bullshit Van Wilder fuck is going to play Hal Jordan??? I was always amused by RR in comedies, but I never got the since he was "acting". Then, on a whim I picked up The Nines and Chaos Theory. Both movies showed me that Reynolds can act. I'd be fine if he did little indie films like this all the time. Especially in the case of Chaos Theory, where we get to see quality acting and hot ass Sarah Chalke.

I'm just saying that by casting a fairly big name in the role, they aren't going to want to cover his face up. They'll use Justice League as an excuse and just give him green contacts. That's not a HORRIBLE idea, but it's not Hal Jordan's GL.

    by lynxpro

... the production was the problem. That and the inability to lock up British actors into long term contracts like in American television production is the other problem. HEX also had the problem that the supporting actress and her character was far more interesting than the lead actress and character. The character of Thelma - and Jemima Rooper's acting - stole the show and there wasn't much room for anything or anyone else.

    His first REAL challenge.

    by keblar

I have to admit, he has a charm that pisses me off 'cos I can't help but like, but that will not fly in a role like Hal. As far as I can remember he's always succeeded in roles because he could rely on just being degrees of that one Van Wilderesque character. But if he's gonna go this and not have it be a "well if we get him to do his sexy jailbait chaser from Waiting suddenly we'll have the female demo hooked in" cop-out then this flick will FAIL FAIL FAIL, and he'll loose the fragile respect of all the folks like me who've laughed at him and grudgingly like him over the years.

BUT, this also gives him a chance to be something other than that douchy smarmy quipping ad-libbing frat guy.

This is a dangerous role for him to take, becauase it can either re-make his image or break him to waaayyyy down in the bankability ranks, and he'll wind up doing 'straight to video' romantic comedys for the rest of his career.

I don't mind Ryan Reynolds, I am a bit concerned that GL is not as huge a name as Spide-Man, Batman, or Superman or even X-Men. Hell, it seems Deadpool is even more popular these days with younger audiences and not just becuase of the Wolverine movie. Long story short, will the character be too much of an unknown to draw in a wide audience. I also worry about the suit. Also please don't have him make Giant Green Catcher's mits and bulldozers with his ring, that's about the only thing I know about GL and that would be too lame if they did that. I'm almost kind of looking forward to Reynolds' movie where he's buried alive with only a candle in iraq and has to find his way home and or get revenge. That is if he's even doing that with this now.

If the GL script is as good and epic as has been said on here a few times this could be what really puts him over the top. by continentalop

First off, read my above post. I explained that his build was the least of my problems - the only reason I went on to attack his physique is because Mr. Beaks insisted he was cut he must be tough. I was just offering a counter-argument that Reynolds might be well built, it doesn't mean he projects toughness.
pdennett316: Yes Reynolds is an actor, which is why I have hesitations about being excited about him playing this role. He has yet shown that he has the ability to project the traits that make Hal Jordan Hal Jordan. If he was chosen to play Wally West, I would definitely be more likely to buy it and trust him in pulling it off. Just because someone is an actor doesn't mean he can play any part.
I will also say I haven't really put down Reynolds yet or denounced him being chosen. I explicitly said he might pull it off, I just am not excited by the choice. I'll just have to wait to see if he can prove my first opinions wrong.
Subtitles Off: Still trying to get people to think your an asshole, huh? Well, nice try but to desperate. But yes there are ex-military guys who are now models, as well as some other tough guys who were models (Jason Statham but they are few and far between. The thing about a models build is that it shows EFFORT - a huge amount of time devoted to dieting, muscle shaping and sculpting, and worrying about their figure and appearance. It is non-congruent with being a fighter or even a pilot who either spend huge amounts of time working out to train for fighting or just to stay in good shape - when do they have time to devote hours to making sure they look super good?
And making a gay joke at the expense of MMA just says more about you than it does the sport.

He shouldn't be put in the same category as Deadpool and Lobo. Deathstroke was made to be a villain and he was portrayed not as a wise cracking smart ass but as no-nonsense. cold-blooded professional. Darkman, The abominable Catwomen, Punisher and currently Luke Cage and Iron Fist are ready to be made and those two are about as well known Al Pacino's lost lost twin brother Leroy Pacino. So don't worry that about GL popularity he is big enough.

Reynolds is a fine choice for GL. More important is the script, it had better be a good one. Choice of actors is important but IMO not as important as script, story, a cohesive narrative. As I have said before, Keaton was the second best Batman, and who ever thought he could be the best Batman? Because until Bale came along he was, thus proving casting choices are not always what they seem.

Casting DOES matter, I worded that incorrectly. Sometimes casting choices may not seem logical or sensible on the surface, but turn out to be better than expected that's what I was trying to say. So those who think Reynolds may not be the best choice, wait and see. To judge a film soley by its casting choice is, dumb, at least until the final product comes out.

    ATTN: groorgman RE: Obama comment

    by fassbinder79

Froze the salaries for top White House staff members.

Obama sigend the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, legally binding equal pay for equal work irrespective of sex. That was followed by the Children's Health Insurance Bill which has incorporated 4.1 million children from poor families into the government's healthcare program. Then, Obama acted to lift the restrictions on federal funding for stem cell research, resumed funding for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), increased efforts to advance the development of renewable and clean energy, and actively participated in the global agenda for controlling climate change.

Set a deadline for the closing of Guantanimo Bay.

Fast-tracked the process to apply new fuel standards to 2011 car models AND initiated steps to allow California to set its own standards for auto emissions that are stricter than that of the Federal government.
Signed a detailed executive order to ban torture and inhumane treatment of prisoners.

Asked the military leadership to engage in additional planning necessary to execute a responsible military drawdown from Iraq.

Released the interrogation memos without consulting the Bush staff and/or Bush about it.

Signed an executive order that restored a 30-day timeframe for former presidents to review records before they are released. It also eliminated the right for the vice president or family members of former presidents to do the reviews.

Signed an executive order that requires that appointees sign forms saying that they were not hired because of political affiliations or contributions.

Signed an order banning gifts from lobbyists and banning anyone from working in an agency they had lobbied in previous years.

President Obama lifted a ban on giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide abortion information.
Granted his first TV interview as president to Al-Arabiya, a channel described as a "voice of moderation" to the Middle East.

President Obama has also shown that he is going to be extremely tough where Afghanistan and Pakistan are concerned and has sent numerous drones in there stop insurgents.

President Obama kept the financial markets from crashing into oblivion back in March.

He has greatly improved America's image around the world in just a matter of months.

And he helped assist the military and our intelligence community in kicking the ass of some Somali pirates.

    What have you done lately?

RYAN REYNOLDS - No Mask Guaranteed

    by thusspakespymunk

They're not going to have him wear the mask. Either the uniform will be modified not to have a mask, or they'll put him in a mask for three seconds and he'll mutter a snarky line like "I don't think so ..." and then show up maskless with a joke about it every time. "LANTERN 2121, WHY ARE YOU NOT WEARING THE PROPER FACIAL ATTIRE?" "With all due respect, Mr. Guardian, you can kiss my piehole." He won't make a boxing glove out of the ring's light or use it like an actual GL ring. He will use it instead to shoot lasers of 'pure green energy' at his enemies like phasers from STAR TREK only not as ghey.

    Keaton as Batman

    by revenge_of_fett

Ok, Keaton was a better ACTOR than George Clooney or Val Kilmer. Also the scripts for the film he was in didn't SUCK! But was Keaton born to play Batman? Well, Batman isn't a short, ugly jewish guy so NO! In fact Bob Kane himself said Kilmer was more in line with what he imagine Wayne to be when he created him. The truth is that Alec Baldwin wanted Batman very badly but Burton wanted Keaton. To make up for it Baldwin made The Shadow, which he was great in even though it wasn't a fantastic film overall. Baldwin was PERFECT for Batman and SHOULD have got the job. But Burton wanted a creepy little underdog like himself so little fanboys who's feet couldn't touch the floor at the cinema now think Keaton was the perfect choice. BULLSHIT! The scripts and his acting chops made him TOLERABLE, but it was and always will be a BAD CASTING JOB!

Timberlake wasn't auditioning for Hal Jordan

    by darth_beerfart

Timberlake was auditioning for the flash, and from what my sources say he may have won the partDC is following Marvel and are hoping to intertwine their franchises together. Batman won't be involved (at least while Chris Nolan is heading that franchise, he doesn't want it and WB isn't pressuring him) but Superman is looking to reboot into this new "Justice league" universe and depending on the progress of a superman movie, the actor playing supes may or maynot have a major cameo towards the end of GL. Flash however will definetly debut in the Green Lantern movie followed by a solo Flash adventure 8-10 months. WB knows that Flash and GL are the safest bet when it comes to matching up superheroes, and as both franchises are starting up it makes sense to put them in the same world. As i said Batman will be left out completly and Superman's appearance depends on a number of things (mainly whoever directs a superman movie and when production starts). Wonder woman may not appear as Joel silver has production rights and wants a Wonder Woman movie to develop and stand on its own before she's thrown into another heroes story.

Just my opinion, but Ryan Reynolds is pretty lackluster and has a habit of joining films that sound good on paper, but turn out to be horrible (Blade: Trinity, Wolverine, even Smokin' Aces). He's great for tongue-in-cheek romantic comedies, but sucks as a leading or supporting man in action flicks. His track record proves it. Maybe he deserves another chance, I don't know, but Bradley Cooper is a much better, much better looking actor with much greater range. After "The Hangover," his stock is climbing, and he would've been the inspired choice.
I'm even less interested in "Green Lantern" now. But we'll see.

MM writes: "It was on the old Cinescape site, now known as Mania.com...and he I.D. himself as a close, or best friend of Reynold's. "

More full of shit you could not be.. I couldn't eat enough to throw up as much as I'd want to...

Who cares about this anyway? His ring gives him the power to make large green objects like vacuum cleaners and baseball bats? Interesting, if you're eight years old... ugh.

    Green Lantern's powers

    by zinc_chameleon

are limited by his imagination, as well as powered by it. That's the part of Green Lantern that makes it interesting, past the eight-year-old level: everything you think or feel can manifest through the Ring. Without the right combination of personality and ability, you're dead meat if you use the Ring. And, if I remember my GL mythology, the Crystal has a flaw in the yellow area of the spectrum. Great idea also: it's a tremendous, but not omnipotent technology. And we know what happens if a one of the Order goes bad...

Actually, they kind of ret-conned the yellow weakness of the Green Lanterns. Recently, with the whole Parallax and Rebirth storyline, they revealed that the yellow weakness was an impurity caused by the fear-based creature called Parallax inside the Green Lantern power source on Oa. So basically, your weakness to yellow is somewhat based on your feeling of fear.
. . .or something like that. I'm not entirely sure; the whole thing seemed rather convoluted. It's now been established that Hal is a man without fear, and that the yellow impurity's been recently purged, so Green Lantern's powers now have no weakness. So the Lantern Corps are even more God-like than before.

    by darth_beerfart

DC and WB don't want that, they realize GL has the ability to be a little lighthearted but this is not going to be Fantastic four, WB is actually using both Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk as examples of how they want this film to feel. Martin Campbel is an established action movie director if his 2 James bond films alone didn't prove that he knows what he's doing then you're never going to be happy with the filmThe finished film is going to be amazing, the sript is solid and WB is fully backing this and getting it right in the hopes it will turn into the third Superhero franchise for them. I've also heard around the lot that there will be a Dark knight style viral campaign for the film, also expect something at comic con in a few weeks (not to give to much away but it will invole a photo, ryan renoyds and the finished costume)

He never had much personality in the comics. Reynolds should bring this to life the same way Downey Jr. did with Iron Man. As long as the script is good. Martin Campbell is definitely a plus. Hopefully we get Casino Royale, GoldenEye, Mask of Zorro Campbell, and not Vertical Limit, Legend of Zorro Campbell.

I'll believe it when I see the fucking teaser trailer. Green Latern is as big as Ironman was before the Ironman movie. I still say DC is going to wait to see how popular Blackest Night is before they dump money into a movie. Seeing how well Flash Rebirth has sold I'd say that movie would happen fist. When dump money into a movie when they can't even sell the comic books. BUT if this does happen, and Deadpool does not hopefully Ryan has a good reason for choosing this.

And before you all start jumping on me let me remind everyone how corny Batman was in the 50's and 60s: Batman of Many Nations, Ace the Bat-hound, Rainbow Colored Batman, Bat-Mite, Dr. Double X, Aunt Harriet, etc.
Adam West didn't make Batman cheesy and kitsch, he just played him as he was in the Silver Age - cheesy and kitsch. Adam West is the only actor to be 100% accurate in his portrayal of Batman (admittedly ONLY the Silver Age Batman).

thats kind of a stretch, dont you think? i think that West played it that way and the show was cheesy was cause of the times...the 60s, man. it was a groovy time. then batman changed because of them times (as did most comics) to reflect society and how they perceived themselves. just as in the films of the 70s, where it became New Hollywood, which was "anti-establishment", Batman writers were creating darker stories that werent labeled cheesy, and could touch on serious subjects. then the 80s came and some writers just knocked it outta the park. batman became the antihero that everyone now knows him as.but yes i do agree with you.speaking of good stuff--ive been reading some of my old g.i. joes.

    by continentalop

I'm not saying the Adam West Batman was the way I prefer Batman being shown, but I do think that it is the most accurate portrayal of Batman. I mean. Keaton's and Bale's (praise be his name) Batman are actually unlike any found in the comic books. Keaton's is an oddball/outsider who doesn't fit in, and Bale's is a hero plagued by doubts and reluctantly fights crime as Batman (unlike the one in the comics who is almost always sure of himself and is a zealous crime-fighter).
Say what you want about West, but he IS the 1960s Groovy Batman - right down to his thermal Bat-underwear.
I've got to read some of those again. They are in trades now right?

Why Green Lantern Will Be A Hit...

    by zinc_chameleon

Because 'Star Wars' is mined out. The public needs another space-opera of equal grandeur, and 'Foundation' is too intellectual. The story of the Lantern Corps is of course one of the sources of Star Wars, but it is set in the present day, and on Earth. So you get the sweep of Star Wars, but you can shoot it in the real world. Fantastic Four could have done this, but they blew it.

I still hate Batman Forever more than Batman & Robin. In a way, I look at B&R as the inevitable movie version of the tv show. At least, it was camp from beginning to end. Batman Forever is some strange hybrid that still has some of the darkness of the Burton films with the retarded lines like "Chicks dig the car". They both suck, but at one is more consistent in its' sucking.

Kilmer is like a wooden board throughout Forever. I also despise the butchered characterizations of the Riddler and Two Face. Carrey and Jones are just ripping off Nicholson's Joker. Clooney, at least, had more charisma.

The skates were a joke, Freeze was too cheesy to even be threatening, it was just a terrible movie. If I want to see the TV show I will watch the TV show which was way better than the big screen version that was B & R."What the hell are you anyway? With regards to Bale

    by maelstrom_zero

I always felt that Bale was a bit wooden. Perhaps that was what he was going for--a man so emotionally traumatized by his parents' death that the only thing that remained was a quiet rage, and numbness to everything else.
But every time I watch Bale act, it seems like he has zero emotional range. He just kind of glowers all the time. I mean, yes, modern depictions of Batman have him glowering all the time. But Bale just seems wooden--I feel like I'm watching Keanu Reeves from the Matrix.
Not to say that the films are bad in any way. I think the films are a pretty accurate depiction of the Dark Knight that we know and love, and both films make my inner geek squeal like a girl getting a pink dress. It's just that Bale's acting isn't quite what I imagined when I think of Bruce Wayne.

    by colloquiallyborn

I think he was great in some of his latest movies, and stop blaming him for Blade 3; I think he did a good job with the script he had. Plus Snipes is able to fuck up any movie he wants to, and he really put his heart into screwing Blade 2, and 3 up from the get go.. He's a ninja, only in his own mind!
I think Reynolds did a good job in the movie The Nines; Definitely Maybe; Chaos Theory and Smoking Aces. And while some might go nuts, you also have to consider Directors in the equations. Some will get an actor to perform, other are unable to do so, and so the actors just seem "bleh"..Hope Green Lantern goes good! With Batman reboot, DC and Warner Bros proved they could do a good superhero movie, but failed miserably with Superman Returns..

    RR vs Hal Jordan

    by alex childress

Ryan Reynolds does work as Hal, according to the comics. First, Hal Jordan is a well-known ladies man, who jumps from woman to woman whenever he and Carol Ferris aren't dating. You'd need someone people can believe actually gets a lot of hot chicks. Secondly, for much of his early days (and this is an origin story), Hal isn't the fearless hero - he's a screwup who accidentally crashes a car, gets demoted from flying, and only has a job because of the memory of his father. Reynolds plays immature screw ups who become something better all the time. Also, Reynolds can pull off Hal's sense of humor, that is almost bizarre considering his situations. In Green Lantern #42, in the middle of a battle with a long-snouted alien, they reveal Hal's thought bubble to be 'GONZO. That was his name," as he tries to think of which Muppet the alien reminds him of. Hal Jordan was never some big, tough guy, no UFC fighter, not some unstoppable warrior. He was a regular guy with Air Force training who's single greatest talent was to be fearless. I don't know if Reynolds can do this, but he's certainly not the worst possible choice.

That was the origin in EMERALD DAWN, a ret-con from the late-eighties or early nineties. Hal Jordan before that was shown to be calm, cool and collected even when he first got his ring.
While I am not a huge fan of Reynolds, I am also not a hater. He might pull this off. But one thing they shouldn't do is go down the cliched modern comic book route and show him as a "angst-ridden individual" who has to learn a life lesson. Hal Jordan is the closest thing in comics to Captain Kirk, a self-confident Alpha Male who is sure of himself, willing to make tough decisions and always scoring with hot chicks, including hot green or purple ones.

In various reviews of the script by Berlanti, Green, and Guggenheim, it notes that they draw heavily from Emerald Dawn, including the main villain being Legion (later ret-conned again by Geoff Johns to be Atrocitus). I think instead of angst, they're simply going for the heroes journey. Its not that he resolves all of his problems by becoming Green Lantern; instead he finds his purpose in life.

    About Nathan Fillion

    by alex childress

Yeah, he could have played the role, but not in Hollywood. If they're going to build a multi-picture franchise, they'd rather do it with someone in their 20s or early 30s, with looks that can appeal to women 16 - 40. There are fewer teenage girls who think Nathan Fillion is hot, as opposed to Ryan Reynolds. That's the bottom line, fans - no matter who wrote, or who directed, GL would make less money with Fillion starring.

I hope they don't do a "heroes journey" like the new Star Trek, Batman Begins or the first Spider-Man. Nothing wrong with those movies, but the entire self-doubting hero and his journey is prove himself is such a cliche. That and the Joseph Campbell elements make most super-hero movies so predictable nowadays.
I'm also not saying that I don't want him to not "learn the ropes" but I would prefer if they have it more like Casino Royale (not in style or tone, but in how they presented Bond). Someone who is highly trained, competent and confident in his abilities finally getting to show off what he is capable of. Sure he is not 100% competent about how to use his ring, but he isn't someone who doubts himself or bitches about how he'll never make it, and he sure as hell isn't the Greatest American Hero.

    Dengreg31: I Don't Understand Your Post?

    by media messiah

I can honestly tell you, what I wrote is the truth. In his last posting to me, he specifically complimented my writing, but said that he couldn't disagree with me more about Ryan Reynolds, saying that he and Reynolds...are very good friends, or best friends. He was in the position to say that he was thinking of asking me to be a production partner based on how I rewrote that film outline I talked about. The writings of "The Wish", his sign on name, were just too business like, and to the point, to be a fake...and he never hit me with a punchline afterward to claim that it was a joke. He just stopped posting, period, no follow-up??? At that point, it became clear to me, and perhaps this is just a guess, but...it just seemed the way he took my writing, the critique, I mean, so personally, that Ryan Reynolds himself was the poster. Why? It was mentioned that it was Reynolds' dream to play The Flash. Considering that the sign on name of the poster who I.D.'d himself as Reynolds' close friend was The Wish, it all appeared all too personal to be anyone else other than Reynolds. And BTW, this was about the time that he broke up with Alanis Morisette (spelling?) so I would guess that, and several career disappointments, at that time, placed him in a very sensitive position, emotionally...having nothing to do with me, but my critique didn't help matters, I suspect.Anyway, no big deal. He just voiced a simple, and final, reaction to what I wrote, and he never posted again. This was after he posted for weeks on that site--and writing me at least once before. I find the timing of all that, telling. I will say, as I said before though, he was a very nice person to talk to. He just seemed to be in a bad place then...as with what happens to most of us at down times in our lives. I know myself, I'm dealing with something like that now, and it isn't good, not good at all. I got sucker punched by life, and then by my best friend...the woman I was hoping to marry someday soon. I spare you the details, but life can really be amazingly cruel.

    Continentalop - Hero's journey

    by miyamoto_musashi

Honestly think if the studio has the stronger say, that is how it will be, think Martin Campbell given some decent control will make it more like Casino Royale.
As many have already commented Hal is not a Peter Parker type character, he is much more like tony stark.
Honestly if the studio wants to make cash, they need to watch Iron man several times, and see what was done right and what could be improved. It is without a doubt the closet thing in comic book movies to Green lantern, and was a success critically and financially.
Unfortunately for Green Lantern it doesn't have an actor like RDJ in the lead.

    MattmanReturns, it may have.

    by imagin78

It is important to remember that around 30-40% of a film's gross goes to theater chains. Worldwide gross depends on distribution deals that the studio has in place.

Given that Batman and Robin made $238 million altogether and cost $140 million to make and market, it seems to have, at best, broke even.

Of course, there are other costs like prints, which aren't always included in the production budget, and back-end deals. I am not sure if Schwarzenegger or the producers got a cut of the gross.

On the other hand, the film gets money from licensing deals from fast food, toys and video games. The studio also gets fees from networks for airing the film and home video.

Warner claims they made money and who am I to dispute them. However, I doubt they made a profit from the theatrical side of that film. Most likely, it made a profit from ancillary means.

Alright, I just geeked myself out for the night. I return you to who should play Sinestro.

    by criticalbliss

You have Campbell, a great director (if you don't believe me, contrast the superb Casino Royale to the underwhelming Quantum of Solace). What more could you want?
And Ryan Reynolds is the real deal. He can be funny, serious, physical all at once. He's the best choice for this role.
    GL fans should be ecstatic.

I don't Batman and Robin was a financial success

    by continentalop

Going by Schyler Moore's 2000 book The Biz (which would be appropriate because B&R was only a couple years earlier) the formula for figuring out net profits is thus:
Worldwide Gross (150% of Worldwide Box Office which was $238 million) = $357 million
Minus deemed cost of film (budget): $140 million.
Minus distribution fee (35%): $124.95 million
Minus distribution expenses (40%): $142.8 million.
Which brings us to -$50.75 million. That is right, NEGATIVE money.
And the thing is it might have made even less. I am not sure if advertising cost is handled under Distributor expenses of fees - it is most likely supposed to be listed under the cost of the film, meaning Batman and Robin might have lost up to $100 million dollars for WB.
Now obviously my formula and info could be wrong, but I can't imagine the investors would have just been better to but the $140 million in a bank and collect a mere %5 interest. They would have made $22 million off of interest over the three years it usually takes for a film to go through all the different media distributions.

R&B did made a lot of money at the box office. However, the movie was also gargantually expensive to make, one if not the most expensive movie of 1997, which in the end canceled out the box office revenues. This is why much smaller movies made that year that made less money at the box office ended up as more commercial sucessful then B&R.

    by alex childress

Miyamoto, you said they should follow the Iron Man pattern. I thought Iron Man was fun, entertaining, and completely useless without RDJ. I didn't care about any other characters, and the story has very little get up and go, as he's just spending most of it building the suit. Iron Man is a franchise built almost solely on its director's talent and its actor's charisma. Green Lantern has the ability to be a grand, epic space adventure

Gotta agree with your comments way at the top...I'd expect to see a Paul Newman type too. But, having said that I don't mind RR and if I were playing percentages I'll vote that he pulls this off.
However, the biggest problem a GL movie will have w/ audiences is the mask. I'm an original Marvel reader b/c when I was a kid the heroes and villains just basically looked "cooler". I didn't really start reading (and enjoying) DC titles until a few years ago, but I still see the problems with the original artwork. Batman, of course, is the best of the DC world, while Supes can rock his look because he's iconic.
So in order to make a strong GL movie, they need a few things. I think the huge budget is essential and Reynolds is capable. Done. Now they have to work out a cool mask so he doesn't look like Zorro w/ makeup around his eyes, and they need an outstanding actor to play the villain. And this actor better have chops...far more talented than RR. With all the CGI necessary for a GL movie, the script and tone of the film MUST have quality actors grounding the story. I'm crossing my fingers, and none of the moves made thus far are negative. But there is work to be done.

These people, stars, use the internet also. I recall when, I think it was Bruce Willis, posted on Ain't It Cool News.com...of course he did it as a part of a promotion, but I do recall other celebs talking about posting on this web site and others, so it is possible that you could be talking to just about anybody. The girl off the new Galactica, Katie Sackhoff (spelling?), says that her mother reads posts about her, so it happens. These celebs, their family, friends and associates don't live in a vaccum...they live in this world with the rest of us. They use the internet, watch TV, read magazines, and go to the movies, just like the rest of us. I have sat next to, and talked to people like David Bowie at length...alone, with my brother. He's a nice guy, Mr. Bowie, and he is exactly the person you see in interviews. What is unusual about that is, that is the exception to the rule, as celebraties tend to be the direct opposite to what they present themselves as being. In other words, the majority are selling you an act, all the way, including what you think you know of their personalities, even in interviews, but when they are not being recorded, that is when the real them, comes out, and it is strange to see, and meet, the real them when it is so drastically opposed to the persons that they present themselves to be...publicly. It's actually startling in many cases. Most people can't relate to that, as they see celebs as almost The Second Coming of Jesus when they encounter them. Well, I have been around famous people since I was a kid, so it is normal for me. For you, I can't say, as I don't know you, or your life experiences. BTW, I don't mind if people laugh at me, as I don't have much of an ego.
