Mr. Beaks Unleashes An Exclusive KICK-ASS Image!
Beaks here...

"What LOCK, STOCK [AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS] did for gangster movies, we're doing for comic book/superhero films."
Matthew Vaughn is very pleased with KICK-ASS. Having test screened the film a few days ago, he is 100% confident that he has done justice to the Mark Millar/John Romita Jr. comic book - which means he's made a wild, R-rated movie about a high school kid who suddenly decides he wants to become a superhero.
Judging from the second draft of the screenplay he wrote with Jane Goldman, he certainly had the makings of a great movie on the page. I just wasn't sure if all of the narrative's oddball elements - the eleven-year-old schoolgirl assassin Hit Girl in particular - were going to jibe onscreen. But Vaughn, who made this film outside of the studio system (and it's still without a distributor), is calling his shot. And if all goes according to his plan, you'll be checking out KICK-ASS in the first quarter of 2010.
And if you're going to be at Comic Con in two weeks, your reaction could very well help determine the fortunes of KICK-ASS. At 5:45 PM on Thursday in Hall H (where they'll probably still be mopping the floors after the 3:00 AVATAR presentation), Vaughn is going to screen select scenes from the film. This will be the first time anyone outside of the test screening process has seen footage from KICK-ASS, and this will essentially be a make-or-break moment similar to that experienced by Zack Snyder with 300 back in 2006. If the crowd goes wild, it'll be up to some lucky studio to build that buzz in advance of the movie's spring 2010 release. If it falls flat, it'll be THE SPIRIT all over again (without a distributor in place).
I'm reticent to hype the movie up too much, but Vaughn's enthusiasm during our phone interview this morning was palpable. He thinks he's got something special. And since I'm already a believer in his talent (based on LAYER CAKE alone), I'm not about to doubt him.
For more on KICK-ASS, check back Monday morning for my exclusive interview with Vaughn. And for you Comic Con attendees, be sure to muscle your way into Hall H for the Thursday panel, which will feature Vaughn, Nicolas "Big Daddy" Cage, Christopher "Red Mist" Mintz-Plasse, John Romita Jr. and a "special guest".

Yup!

Maybe...
-
Why do I think this movie is going to McBomb???
-
I'm hoping that I won't be able to move after the Avatar panel, so I'll probably just sit there drooling while this takes place.
-
And not impressed with the image. What's it all about?
-
We get it, he's in a gimp suit...that's FASCINATING!!!

The QT didn't do first?
-
These pics suggest this movie needs to be renamed, because they're doing something to my Ass, and it aint Kicking.
-
. . . than that Red Myst pic released a few months back. From that I was almost certain they had missed the point of the comic series completely. Hope the end product is half decent.
-
Don't see the point in it becoming a movie.

It's Watchmen without all that unnecessary "Good Acting"
by Linguo_IS_Dead
Seriously though, Yancy Butler, McLovin', and...Nicolas Cage!?!
-
...Dirty Appalachian With a Side Twist. I'd have to be pretty drunk to be into that...
-
At best.
-
Where I will be drinking and watching the video of this from my Blackberry. Salute.
-
Sounds dangerous, I'll be sure to stay indoors...
-
I like Vaughan, I like Millar, I like Romita Jr. and I like Kick Ass the comic well enough. This movie is going to tank. The world is not ready for a deconstruction of comic book movies which is what Kick Ass is to comics.
-
I didn't know "Lock Stock" did something to anything? This truly is news!
-
Shouldn't be too hard. There isn't much there.
-
I think his lips all sticky out looks weird.
-
'the fuck does it matter who posts first in the talk back section? You probably win money and a blowjob from Megan Fox because I can't come up with any other reasons why people would blow their load over being the first ones to reply on a fucking message board.
-
After three issues. After reading 1985, I no longer look forward to the next Mark Millar work. After the heights of Ultimates and Superman: Red Son, he is now at the vanguard of the comics industry eating itself.

Hopefully its not what Layer Cake did for Gangsters movies and just make them suck.

Seriously, how do I get that job? Is there some website or something to become a professional screener?
-
There's always just been somethin so fuckn disingenuous about this whole 'KICK-ASS' thing.
-
However, I'm open to be swayed.

is there a trailer or teaser of this yet? Jury .. that way ....

"What Smurfs: The Movie did for blue people films..."
by CHRISTIAN_BALE_TRASHED_MY_LIGHTS
Would also have been a good quote except (1) I don't even know if there was such a movie (2) There's not a lot of blue people movies.
So, now I've thought about it, not all that great a quote at all.
-
You're right Justin, being a 1st poster is almost as bad as being a person who complains about first posters.
-
there are no 1st posters ... only when you realize this, will you not be a douche bag ...
-
That's not what you wrote in the DESTROYER TB. Would you like me to paraphrase?
-
Maybe i'll run into you at Comic Con, not literally, you know but ....
-
Dammit Jim, I'm a movie-buff, not a comic-geek.
Just entertain me in the theatre and I'm happy.
-
Its like being shouted at by morons.
-
...there is something inadvertently wrong with having the movie process begin on a comic before the first issue even hits stores. It's like the cart pulling the horse in this case. It's pretentious and speaks volumes of the true intentions of the comic if it's nothing more than an after-effect. Plus it mimics the "good-old" days of Image comics in the 90's, when an issue hadn't even hit #2 and already the creators were heavily trying to market movies, cartoons, toys, TV shows, etc about it.
-
Haven't read the books yet, as I'm waiting on the trade, but from what I understand this could be a seriously cool fucked-up movie.
Red Mist-Who would call themselves that?
-
So that is what I have to look forward to at Comic Con? I know nothing about this project except what I'll see there.
-
Maybe now Millar can actually FINISH the comic. And War Heroes while he's at it!
-
Is push cool and style over substance. Which is what these seems to be doing as well.
-
these still images just read right off the bat as a scifi channel movie. it doesn't look like gritty reality, it just looks low budget. sucks for them.

More Mark Millar FILTH, just what Comic books based movies need.
by Donnie_Dunn
Here is this shitty writer again, I hope this time he doesn't try to fit himself in any superman script again. I cannot stand his stupid stories, and above all his godzilla-sized ego. I hope this will be a flop, just to get past over the millar fashion and they can go for the Warren Ellis or the Grant Morrison stuff (well...after what they did with the alan moore works, I'm not sure if I want them to adapt any other superhero masterpiece).
-
paraphrase sir
-
"....who post first have little dicks and were molested by their fathers". Ring a bill?
-
I HAVE TWO BIG STICKS!! NOW UNDO YOUR ZIPPER!! HUUUAAA!! That image makes my pussy so fucking wet I have to wear a diaper.
-
if they don't exist .. they didn't get molested .. now did they?
-
Seriously, how can you hate on Stardust and how could it have possibly set back fantasy films? Stardust was easily the best flick of 2007. It is the modern equivalent of The Princess Bride. If you can hate on that flick then you really do need to move out of your mother's basement and get a life.
-
That is all.
-
.......what?
-
Mark Millar seems a little full of himself in the notes at the end of the comics, and now Matthew Vaughn seems to be doing the same thing. But the comic is tight, and if the movie is really a good adaptation it's gonna be sweet.
-
the costumes in the pics so far have looked kinda silly, and in the comic they seem natural. Hopefully this won't fuck it up.
-
He's fucking TALENTED people! That's why it sucks when he leaves a project. Mind you, the X3 thing makes sense, the studio was relentless with their production schedule, but why did he leave THOR? Or was he dropped? Either way, I want the guy to have $100 million to work with soon. Ah, maybe he can resurrect Superman, yes?
-
Mark Millar turns my stomach, but after LAYER CAKE and STARDUST, Matthew Vaughn has earned the benefit of the doubt.
-
I'll second the Vaughn to do Supes sentiment!! Good call.
I give Vaughn a lot of credit for walking away from a paycheck when he's artistically compromised. That takes balls!
-
sounds like Superman may have some of the same 'crap' surrounding it that X-3 did, so maybe it's not a good fit for him.
Whatever he does...I'm there.
-
figyred out that the comic was crap. If the film kept the theme and did it's own thing. Yeah I'd support it. It could have been the Martin of superhero film. Oh well.
-
And it was fucking awesome. Cage seemed to be in a RAISING ARIZONA vibe - and HIT GIRL is so damn awesome! Watching her dice up that gang was so frickin' thrilling. What I saw had rough effects, but I know when it's all done up, it'll be awesome. Seriously unlike anything I've really seen.
-
And, is the comic even finished? I read the first issue and then I got hit with a financial crisis…
-
Yeah, they're under the gun to produce SOMETHING- but maybe that's the fire under their ass that they need. This summer was supposed to see the second installment of the "new" SUPERMAN series, but we all know how that went. It might also be a factor for WB to put the next Supes into production because of their need to keep their financial partner, Legendary Pictures, in the game. If Legendary walks away, WB is going to have to foot the big bill all by itself. I expect that we'll get some announcement on SUPERMAN within 6 months. And yeah, Vaughn could totally do that thing right.
-
And the film might turn out to be badass! Can't wait for this motherfucking movie! :)
-
I'M NOT LEAVING HIM! LEAVE HIM ALONE!
-
I really enjoyed what I've read so far.
-
over on the right there this ad comes up that I see scrolling down talkback for dating comic con people and the picture to go with it is the most hideous visage i have ever gazed upon. it makes you look like jacqueline bisset in the deep, except you have nicer tits. can you please inform this singles site that their ad is causing people who read your site to go blind and that one way to ensure people use a dating site is to use, say, ATTRACTIVE PEOPLE.

Nice to chat with you. Kick Ass is a good plot or premise. Maybe even a fine comic. But is it going to be a good movie? Cant you say, if you have seen it. If not, pretend like you are not connected in any way, and your 12 years old and you are telling your friend if it sucks or not.
-
... for a studio to take this in distribution, hold it close to its chest and then say in that manner the corporate bigwig says "Let the dumping ... RESUME!" on that FAMILY GUY episode but instead say "And now ... RESHOOTS AND EDITS!" and turn it into a PG-13 feel-good adventure flick about how the kid learns the value of family and the importance of sticking by his friends. You know I'm right.
-
My favorite animation from Image was SAVAGE DRAGON, which ran the narration "He had no memory of who he was, why he was here" and then showed a shot of the Dragon being inducted into the police department to which my friends would all add " ... so we gave him a gun!"
-
The Coon
-
Looking forward to this. A friend of mine did some work on it, inclusing a night shoot for the "bazooka" scene. Theres not enough bazookas on film, IMHO :)

Ritchie is all style over substance and his style is craptastic.

i just want to take this moment as a comic geek to say
by iwasredempted
that john romita jr. is such an under-rated artist. i even hate to use that term because i don't want to insult the man and his work. in the past, i've imitated his style in my failed attempts at comic book art. his style along with many others, such as mike mignola and kevin knowlan, have been like studying ancient scripture.
-
That's all I got.
-
The comic was so FRESH and cool, and Vaughn is the man for working outside the studio system! (No lame compromises) This movie is going to be huge. A REAL superhero movie.
-
Wishing him the best with this...even though I didn't give the comic much more than a cursory glance because it seemed so self indulgent conceptually. I will have to go back on that knee-jerk reaction and give it a fair shake I think.
-
you DO have me a bit there .. it was my 1st post in years tho .... sorry
-
Knowing nothing about the comic aside from the blurbs on AICN and Splashpage, it looks like the film could fit in nicely next to Watchmen. Which means it will probably bomb and half the meatheads on here will bitch about it not being like The Dark Knight.

(No offense to the meatheads in the Watchmen talkbacks.)
-
anyways i like vaughn's work, fox sold him down the shitter on x3 but he's got balls, never got into kick ass but kinda confident it ill be good!!!
-
I like the fact this film was made independent of a studio. Gives me hope it'll take R-rated chances and punch me in the face. "Layer Cake" was Daniel Craig's comeuppance into the action genre, and Matthew Vaughan did a great job directing that film.
I'm looking forward to "Kick Ass."
-
lol i must be getting old, but glad kickass is r rated instead of most of the watered down bullshit we get, just hope expendables is r rated to.
-
Probably the best visual storyteller in the business.
-
It's still limping towards it's opening sequence. At this rate, it'll be the first comic to be spoiled by it's own movie.
-
When a guy who is given the chance to reinvent key marvel characters and the best he can do is turn them into assholes, cannibals, rapists, and vapid whores, he has no talant. "The Hulk eats people, isn't that cool?" No, you fucking hack. That's just ripping of Alan Moores LXG Mr. Hyde.
-
...In the comic. And let us not forget that while Layer Cake was decent that fairy dust film he did after that was TERRIBLE.
-
Or if you want more in depth on Kick-Ass you can pick up the Tripwire Superhero Special we put out back in February. We were on set. We interviewed Millar, Romita and Vaughn. We got scoops. The issue was even reviewed by AintItCool: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/40993#8
-
thanks for the info!
-
Other than competing vs Battle Chasers for how long can it take us to release six issues, but I don't know what it has to offer that could be so revolutionary other than a lot of violence and gore. Hopefully I'll be surprised, if the movie turns out to be good to great we all win as fans, so w/e. The mask looks ridiculous though, that ski-mask look just does not work.
-
You know that Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was Stan Lee's inspiration for the Hulk in the first place? there's a difference between being inspired by something and 'ripping it off'. Just like there's a difference between criticism and bitching like a little bitchy bitch. Bitch.
-
There's no buzz about this because they haven't really been doing any kind of real promotion for it. I think it looks awesome personally, but they need to start doing more viral video shit, start showing footage. This looks to be amazing and the potential is there, they just need to start capitalizing on it.
-
All Im gonna say!
-
If there's no distribution for the movie, why don't they screen the whole thing at SDCC? Create some buzz and help it get picked up. Just like at festivals.
I have no interest in this project. Not in the comic or the film. I don't have faith in Vaughn (Stardust sucked hard) nor Millar (his original Wolverine run and first Ultimates trade are his only good stuff).
-
let me get this straight: an interesting new premise, based on a little known comic, made outside the studio and deemed worthy of comic con is written up in a "I'll hold judgement" tone. But when Fox casts Ryan Reynolds, who hasn't done a single good superhero movie (or any good characters IMO) is cast by FOX, (who has screwed up such franchises as X-men, Predator v Aliens, Daredevil, Wolverine, etc etc) that story is written as a good thing?
I used to deny the haters of this site, but this reeks of poor judgement to me. Ryan Reynolds is a questionable choice, and Kick-Ass sounded good from the first paragraph.
-
It's yet another deconstruction of superheroes, written by a guy that has made a career out of deconstructing superheroes. I'll pass.
-
First & foremost...so far to date...I've been hopeful for this one & I'm pretty up on Millar's materials...but holy steaming shit on a sweltering shingle Matthew Vaughn sells me period!!!
