Mr. Beaks Unleashes An Exclusive KICK-ASS Image!

Published at:  Jul 13, 2009 2:26:34 AM CDT

Beaks here...

"What LOCK, STOCK [AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS] did for gangster movies, we're doing for comic book/superhero films."

Matthew Vaughn is very pleased with KICK-ASS. Having test screened the film a few days ago, he is 100% confident that he has done justice to the Mark Millar/John Romita Jr. comic book - which means he's made a wild, R-rated movie about a high school kid who suddenly decides he wants to become a superhero.

Judging from the second draft of the screenplay he wrote with Jane Goldman, he certainly had the makings of a great movie on the page. I just wasn't sure if all of the narrative's oddball elements - the eleven-year-old schoolgirl assassin Hit Girl in particular - were going to jibe onscreen. But Vaughn, who made this film outside of the studio system (and it's still without a distributor), is calling his shot. And if all goes according to his plan, you'll be checking out KICK-ASS in the first quarter of 2010.

And if you're going to be at Comic Con in two weeks, your reaction could very well help determine the fortunes of KICK-ASS. At 5:45 PM on Thursday in Hall H (where they'll probably still be mopping the floors after the 3:00 AVATAR presentation), Vaughn is going to screen select scenes from the film. This will be the first time anyone outside of the test screening process has seen footage from KICK-ASS, and this will essentially be a make-or-break moment similar to that experienced by Zack Snyder with 300 back in 2006. If the crowd goes wild, it'll be up to some lucky studio to build that buzz in advance of the movie's spring 2010 release. If it falls flat, it'll be THE SPIRIT all over again (without a distributor in place).

I'm reticent to hype the movie up too much, but Vaughn's enthusiasm during our phone interview this morning was palpable. He thinks he's got something special. And since I'm already a believer in his talent (based on LAYER CAKE alone), I'm not about to doubt him.

For more on KICK-ASS, check back Monday morning for my exclusive interview with Vaughn. And for you Comic Con attendees, be sure to muscle your way into Hall H for the Thursday panel, which will feature Vaughn, Nicolas "Big Daddy" Cage, Christopher "Red Mist" Mintz-Plasse, John Romita Jr. and a "special guest".

...there is something inadvertently wrong with having the movie process begin on a comic before the first issue even hits stores. It's like the cart pulling the horse in this case. It's pretentious and speaks volumes of the true intentions of the comic if it's nothing more than an after-effect. Plus it mimics the "good-old" days of Image comics in the 90's, when an issue hadn't even hit #2 and already the creators were heavily trying to market movies, cartoons, toys, TV shows, etc about it.

Yeah, they're under the gun to produce SOMETHING- but maybe that's the fire under their ass that they need. This summer was supposed to see the second installment of the "new" SUPERMAN series, but we all know how that went. It might also be a factor for WB to put the next Supes into production because of their need to keep their financial partner, Legendary Pictures, in the game. If Legendary walks away, WB is going to have to foot the big bill all by itself. I expect that we'll get some announcement on SUPERMAN within 6 months. And yeah, Vaughn could totally do that thing right.

Can't Believe There's Not More BUZZ About This

    by cowboyone

The comic was so FRESH and cool, and Vaughn is the man for working outside the studio system! (No lame compromises) This movie is going to be huge. A REAL superhero movie.

    Vaughn has talent

    by arteska

Wishing him the best with this...even though I didn't give the comic much more than a cursory glance because it seemed so self indulgent conceptually. I will have to go back on that knee-jerk reaction and give it a fair shake I think.

    Looks pretty cool

    by captainaxis

Knowing nothing about the comic aside from the blurbs on AICN and Splashpage, it looks like the film could fit in nicely next to Watchmen. Which means it will probably bomb and half the meatheads on here will bitch about it not being like The Dark Knight.

(No offense to the meatheads in the Watchmen talkbacks.)

    Yeah

    by cobbio

I like the fact this film was made independent of a studio. Gives me hope it'll take R-rated chances and punch me in the face. "Layer Cake" was Daniel Craig's comeuppance into the action genre, and Matthew Vaughan did a great job directing that film.
I'm looking forward to "Kick Ass."

when did r rated movies ever become a risk to make

    by ukfilms28

lol i must be getting old, but glad kickass is r rated instead of most of the watered down bullshit we get, just hope expendables is r rated to.

John Romita jr is a GIANT in comic book storytelling…

    by blakindigo

Probably the best visual storyteller in the business.

    No, the comic isn't finished...

    by cookylamoo

It's still limping towards it's opening sequence. At this rate, it'll be the first comic to be spoiled by it's own movie.

Mark Millar sucks as a comic writer

    by nivek666

When a guy who is given the chance to reinvent key marvel characters and the best he can do is turn them into assholes, cannibals, rapists, and vapid whores, he has no talant. "The Hulk eats people, isn't that cool?" No, you fucking hack. That's just ripping of Alan Moores LXG Mr. Hyde.

A lot of shitty music choices...

    by fassbinder79

...In the comic. And let us not forget that while Layer Cake was decent that fairy dust film he did after that was TERRIBLE.

    More on Kick-Ass

    by agro23

Or if you want more in depth on Kick-Ass you can pick up the Tripwire Superhero Special we put out back in February. We were on set. We interviewed Millar, Romita and Vaughn. We got scoops.

The issue was even reviewed by AintItCool: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/40993#8

The comic has been pretty cool so far..

    by swoomustdie

Other than competing vs Battle Chasers for how long can it take us to release six issues, but I don't know what it has to offer that could be so revolutionary other than a lot of violence and gore. Hopefully I'll be surprised, if the movie turns out to be good to great we all win as fans, so w/e. The mask looks ridiculous though, that ski-mask look just does not work.

    by brokenheadstuff

You know that Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was Stan Lee's inspiration for the Hulk in the first place? there's a difference between being inspired by something and 'ripping it off'. Just like there's a difference between criticism and bitching like a little bitchy bitch. Bitch.

They need to start getting more about this movie out..

    by sonnyfern

There's no buzz about this because they haven't really been doing any kind of real promotion for it. I think it looks awesome personally, but they need to start doing more viral video shit, start showing footage. This looks to be amazing and the potential is there, they just need to start capitalizing on it.

Why don't they just screen the whole movie?

    by ash talon

If there's no distribution for the movie, why don't they screen the whole thing at SDCC? Create some buzz and help it get picked up. Just like at festivals.

I have no interest in this project. Not in the comic or the film. I don't have faith in Vaughn (Stardust sucked hard) nor Millar (his original Wolverine run and first Ultimates trade are his only good stuff).

    whats wrong at AICN?

    by redkamel

let me get this straight: an interesting new premise, based on a little known comic, made outside the studio and deemed worthy of comic con is written up in a "I'll hold judgement" tone. But when Fox casts Ryan Reynolds, who hasn't done a single good superhero movie (or any good characters IMO) is cast by FOX, (who has screwed up such franchises as X-men, Predator v Aliens, Daredevil, Wolverine, etc etc) that story is written as a good thing? I used to deny the haters of this site, but this reeks of poor judgement to me. Ryan Reynolds is a questionable choice, and Kick-Ass sounded good from the first paragraph.

The "Kick-Ass" premise was hardly original

    by movietool

It's yet another deconstruction of superheroes, written by a guy that has made a career out of deconstructing superheroes. I'll pass.
