The Producers Of THE DARK KNIGHT and TRANSPORTER Bring Us Remo Williams...THE DESTROYER!?!?

Published at:  Jul 09, 2009 11:15:52 AM CDT

Merrick here...

"The Dark Knight” producer Charles Roven and “Transporter” producer Steve Chasman are teaming up to produce “The Destroyer,” a franchise vehicle that brings back ’80s action hero Remo Williams. The pair have set up the project at Columbia.

Charley and Vlas Parlapanides, who are penning the action epic “War of Gods” for Relativity, are on board to write the screenplay.

Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir wrote the initial batch of “Destroyer” adventure tomes, which centered on Williams, a New Jersey cop convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. Williams is sentenced to the electric chair, but his death is faked so he can be reborn as the vigilante character the Destroyer, joining a top-secret assassin squad set up by the government to operate outside the bounds of the law.

...conveys THIS MISSIVE at RiskyBusinessBlog.

I'm still oh-so-horny for Craig Safan's theme from 1985's REMO WILLIAMS film, which can be heard via this YouTube video montage:

That project was directed by Guy Hamilton, who was...at one point...this close to directing the first SUPERMAN film.

Keep in mind that the REMO WILLIAMS film we saw in the 80s was, itself, based on a series of novels by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. The new project may feasibly draw elements from the novels rather than being a "remake" of Hamilton's film in the traditional sense.

When the original film came out, I recall one reviewer giving it a very simple write-up. And I quote:

"Remo Williams The Adventure Begins: When?"

I'm just waiting (joylessly) for the announcement of remakes for, The Wraith, The Breakfast Club and for that matter any and all of the John Hughes catalogue.

I know I watched most of this movie during some afternoon of my childhood, but moreso I remember the episode of "Lights, Camera, Action!" where Leonard Nimoy described how they did the walking on water bit. Also, Fred Ward has to be one of the most unattractive leads of an 80s action film. He sort of looked like if Charles Bronson was attacked by a Wampa and then melted a little.

    Read the books...

    by anakinsdiapers

...saying Remo was a bad ass is an understatement. And chiun was worst.

Lets see, there was a scene where the villain, knowing when and where Remo was going to infiltrate, set up a kill zone with men with submachine guns and sawed off shotguns with room sweeper buckshot. Once Remo jumps the fence, the floodlights cut on and all the goons open fire. Remo proceeds to either dodge, or "push" the bullets away using air from his open palms. After he kills everyone on the field, and chiun shows up, Remo tells him in frustration that he's got a bullet hole in his leather jacket.
If they follow the books i'm there.

I've read the Destroyer series since the late 70s, and have been thoroughly disappointed that Remo hasn't been treated properly with a film series. At the time of the film, talk was that they were looking for a franchise to take over for James Bond, which is why so many of the Bond people worked on the film. Joel Grey was great as Chuin, but they need somebody more frail looking to really honor the book version. Also, there has been a transition of the book series as Harold Smith has an assistant now who is slowly taking over the reins of CURE. I say that's a great place to begin. Bring it on!

    The Books!

    by god of gamblers

The movie had the tone of Remo and Chuin's relationship down pat, but the books had tons of grotesque bone-snapping and larynx crushing, as well as piles of hot chicks being dutifully ravished by our hero. Sadly, not even James Bond was getting any trim in the mid-80's. I think we can all agree those elements would be a worthy addition to a new Remo movie.

Hell, I can find out the temperature of your ass in that chair if I really wanna know! Fred Ward is an old man now, but if the story picked up twenty or so years after the original, it could be awesome. Right under Big Trouble in Little China among my favorite old action flicks from back in the day is Remo Williams...so let the adventure continue!

I hope the go Bourne-ish on it & make it real, but keep a little of sense of the fantastic.

    Sam Worthington for Remo?
    Jackie Chan for Chuan?

    Jason Statham as Remo!!!

    by bluerosekiller

Chris Pine is a thought, but at the end of the day, he's just too young for the role. If I'm not mistaken, in the original novels Williams was a veteran police detective when he was framed/sentenced to death etc., so Statham would be a better fit IMO.

As for Chiun, after the amount of controversy that the casting of a non-Asian in such a prominent Asian role caused back in the '80s, I'm CERTAIN that we'll not see that mistake made again.
So, I'm thinking the dude from OLDBOY with a bit of aging-up work done on him.

I was surprised when the original movie, which was very good, (and which I watched recently on MGM-HD) didn't perform. This could be VERY cool with the right director, writer and cast. by theghostwholurks

Remo Williams is a series which is BEGGING to be made into an ongoing movie franchise. Crazy martial arts, dark and goofy humor, irreverent social/political commentary and starring a great Odd Couple in Remo and Chuin!Hire Stephen Chow as Chuin, bring back Fred Ward (I WISH!) and let the crazy fun begin! It's good for at LEAST a trilogy, with the decades of novels that've already been written. Just made sure that the guy playing Remo isn't a pretty boy and knows his stuff. I'd suggest Ray Parks, but I really don't think his acting's up to the task.

    Children of the 80's unite...

    by sithtastic

you have nothing to lose but your minds. 80's retreads are not unlike that game of Russian roulette in 187: there are just simply to many bullets in the chamber and it's not as cool as Deerhunter. We're spending more and more time looking back at the theater now and seriously the only way I think this works is if you go Rambo style and play it straight, sans cheese (Yes I know Rambo was originally serious, but does any other 80's film of the action genre lend itself to such parody?). Against all better judgement, bring back Ward (God love him.) and yes, Mulgrew (no doubt wishing she holds up as an aging Karen Black) and advance the characters' stories.

Sounds really bad and horribly simplistic. I'm not usually anti-comic or anything, but this
    description makes me cringe.
And honestly... "The Destroyer"? What exactly does he destroy? Buildings? Planets? With a name like that, you'd better be able to do planetary damage, I'm talking cities smashed into rubble with some kind of matter-leveling power. Because otherwise it's a stupid name the character doesn't deserve.
After "The Dark Knight," you'd think Charles Roven could find something more spine-tingling than this.
The Destroyer? Give me a break.

Remo Williams could've used an editor

    by dancetothebeatofthelivingdead

Seriously, that movie was horrible. I don;t understand why is was so cultishly popular at the time, and why that sentiment has stuck. The movie played like a bad spoof and just a series of scenes thrown together with no continuity whatsoever. What the movie did have, however, is the badass factor from its leading man and a whole lot of promise. It was just weighed down by its own ineptitude, IMO. Could this sequel work? Yes, but they must bring back Fred Ward and it must be taken seriously in a serious tongue-in-cheek sort of way, if that makes any sense. The spoof only works if you get the sense that the movie doesn't know that it is a spoof, and Remo Williams was perfect for that. Instead, it just seemed that no one's heart was in it from the word, "Go." This one isn't even on my radar but, like the first one did, it has the potential to be a pleasant surprise. Here's hoping they stick with the original cast and finally deliver on that promise.

    I Love the DESTROYER Series!!!

    by halloween68

This would be awesome. At one point I had read all the books when I was a kid like up to #60. The series was like a serial. Like Dick Tracy or Flash Gordon. Only more fleshed out. Who knows what # they are up to now. The books were way better than the movie though. The movie kinda sucked if you're looking at it from the books standpoint. Nothing like the books really. The books are hilarious for one. Williams and Chiun are crazy drunk characters. Absolutely bug nuts and deranged. Completely on a different wavelength as everyone else. And too, they are vigilantes. There's no hero stuff going on like in the movie. They are strictly assassins reporting directly to the president and his staff. The books are not only deleriously funny, but they are also very dark in tone. A lot of killing. A lot of violence. No where near as cartoonish as the movie. Would highly recommend the books to any one.

Follow the books, at least up to #70 after which they just weren't the same without Richard Sapir - the dark satire, the light humor, the violence, the great Remo/Chiun relationship - and this could be awesome. I love the 80's flick for different reasons (mainly the way they got the humor of the Remo/Chiun relationship right and Grey's supporting-actor worthy performance, not so much for the low grade attempts at action scenes) but just let that be. Give Ward, Mulgrew and Grey cameos, use Safan's music again, and find an actual martial artist to play Chiun. Someone Statham-like would rock as Remo. Please god not some 20-year-old.

All right, maybe I had the wrong impression of the story. Maybe it IS pretty badass. Reading the enthusiasm here for the comics lets me know there's a possibility of a good film.
The name "The Destroyer" struck me as pretty silly (on principle alone) but depending on what he destroys, maybe it makes sense. You know, from a mind/body perspective. Maybe he messes with the minds of his victims before he kicks their asses or kills them? Sort of "destroys their lives"?
I've never read the comic so I don't know. Maybe someone could enlighten me.

    Destroyer because...

    by jydez

He was the reincarnation of Shiva (The Destroyer). Chiun recognized this, I recall one of the books I think Remo was dropped out of a plain or something, killed his body, but Shiva took control then. Seem to remember it was a warzone tanks and stuff, and he was just kind of strolling through, ripping them all apart. Chiun pleaded to have Remo returned, Shiva agreed but it was a sort of "Don't forget he's mine, little man" kind of thing.

Haven't read the books in years, loved them though, and the movie was great. Patrick Kilpatrick the Tiffany Tooth, the eternal bad guy (I think except for one x-files episode?) The blend of humor, more of a story than most action flicks I remember from back then. Chiun was great, I remember the truck flipping over and over Remo runs down and there to rip the door off, he is sitting there holding a broken door handle, just to launch into one of his Korea diatribes. Or "Women should stay home and make babies!" "Ah, Blessed Silence!" Heh. Heheh. Ah, now I'm gonna have to go watch it again.

Remo Williams is called "The Destroyer" because he ends up being the living embodiment of Shiva The Destroyer through his mastery of Sinanju, the secret Korean martial art that — in the series — is the "sun source" from which every other martial art in the world is diluted from.At the beginning, Remo's just a schlub cop, forced into being trained by Chiun into the ultimate assassin against his will (and Chiun's, who thinks anyone who's not Korean isn't worth training). However, over the course of the 100+ book series, Remo becomes QUITE the bad@$$, easily dodging bullets, ripping guys arms out of their sockets and beating them to death with them and inducing women into multiple blackout orgasms simply by touching certain nerve centers in their wrists. Think of Bruce Lee with super-strength and a quirky sense of humor.Marvel put out an over-sized b/w series for a short time back in the 90s, but the vast majority of the enthusiasm for Remo Williams stems from the novels, which are hilarious, action-packed and features frequent bickering between the sarcastic Remo and frequently-annoyed Chiun. And what Remo actually destroys are threats to the U.S. Government, which can't be dealt with through conventional means.

"I am created, Shiva The Destroyer, Death the shatterer of Worlds. The dead night tiger made whole by the Master of Sinanju. What is this dog meat that challenges me now."

Great series of books combining a sense of humour with some great action and satire. The book series got a bit tired in the end and I think both authors lost a bit of interest before Sapir sadly died. However there is a wealth of material in the good books that would make a great series:

    Ongoing battles with the Mafia

    A superhuman shape changing robot

A renegade assassin with the same powers as Remo and Chiun.

A telekinetic psycopathic renegade assassin with better powers than Remo or Chiun.

    Were-Tigers

Oh and as somebody mentions above it becomes very apparent as time goes by that, not only is Remo the greatest Master ever but that he is the Avatar of the Indian God of Destruction

The conceit is that Sinanju is the ultimate martial art of which others are just poor copies and that the Masters of Sinanju hire themselves out as hired killers...of course the US government gladly hires and our two heroes adventures flow from there.

The original film lacked bite and this isn't a remake if it concentrates on another story from the series. They need the actors to look right and Jason Statham isn't it. The two characters are basically thin rather than muscle men and its the fact that they are unprepossessing but incredibly deadly that adds to the fun...I'd have loved Bale for this but it is too similar to Batman for them to give it to him.
