Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks - 2nd wk of July! KNOWING, Barrymore, THE DEEP blu, MST3k & much more!

Published at:  Jul 08, 2009 3:36:24 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here - and right from the get go, I’ll apologize for missing the past two weeks. The first week I missed was due to just a general writer’s block that I had. The second week was a victim to being really really ill. I was sick as a dog. And the medication had me loopy as hell. I’m just now getting out of the funk I was in, but I feel comfortable writing again, so you’ll have your column on time over the coming weeks, unless I get sick again. Which is NO FUN. As usual, the pics and titles are linked to Amazon, where you can learn more upon the titles in question – or you can purchase them which would help to continue this column’s existence. Once again, sorry for missing two weeks – and let’s get on with it, you’ve waited long enough…

KNOWING

I absolutely love KNOWING. I know mixing religion and science fiction are big no-nos – but I can’t help but love it. I mean, what if it is all connected, and there’s some document sitting in a time capsule that’s warning all of us that we’re fucked. I love that. I like the creepy people, I love the gobsmacked Nick Cage! I love Alex Proyas’ new film – and I love that it has a growing audience of folks that are digging on it as well. That’s cool. Try to turn your inner cynic off and just enjoy this one.

PUSH

Comes across like a bad TV pilot that never would have gotten picked up. The powers are lame, the scenario is oh so cute – and I found the whole thing fucking annoying. Worth a rental at most, and that’s just to support the genre, but I doubt you’ll be happy with it.

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: XV

In this box set you get the immortal THE ROBOT VS THE AZTEC MUMMY, THE GIRL IN LOVERS LANE, ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE and RACKET GIRLS. In addition to their MST3King of the films – you’ll get other extras in this 4 disc set. If you’re a fan, this is something required of you. Enjoy.

THE UNBORN

This film dances upon the edge of being cool, but just doesn’t quite get there for me. The idea of being haunted by the spirit of your unborn twin brother, who was in turn the born again demon of a distant twin GrandUncle. Well, I like the premise. I like most of the cast and most of the scares – but it just never really gelled for me. Odette Yustman is yummy eye candy. And I really like Gary Oldman, because it is impossible to not like him, but I found myself wishing that this became his movie and not the girl’s. That never happens. Not a complete waste of time, worth checking out at the very least.

LONELY ARE THE BRAVE

A BUTT-NUMB-A-THON graduate. This is Kirk Douglas’ favorite film of his career – and I get it. In a way it is an incredibly defining film about the end of the West. About the end of the free spirit, the death of the cowboy and the end of what used to be manhood. LONELY ARE THE BRAVE is often credited as being the direct forebearer of FIRST BLOOD and the John Rambo character. This film is amazing. Kirk Douglas is jaw dropping in the lead role – as is Gene Rowlands as a friend. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

THE DEEP (Blu Ray)

I’ve watched this Blu Ray 3 times now. It is a fave film of my youth. 1977. I saw this PG film at the Drive-In about 9 times as a kid. My parents loved this movie, and God bless them for it. A life long obsession with nice tits followed! Why can’t we have more PG films like this one? Sure – let Alba and Beal keep their top on – but give them a white wet t-shirt and 30 minutes of on-screen dive time. Watching this film – you can’t help, but to marvel at how wonderful it is. How the underwater sequences… long and uninterrupted by unneeded dialogue just hold us with their beauty and majesty. This is an amazing film to just look at, but add to that the wonderful documentary on the making of THE DEEP hosted and narrated by Robert Shaw himself… it is bliss! This is my fave release of the week.

ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES

If you’ve never been a fan of Jon Hall and Maria Montez – you’ve been missing out, but jumping on board for this release of ALI BABA AND THE FORTY THIEVES – you get a beautiful Technicolor film, when Technicolor was an absolute marvel to behold. My personal favorite of their films is ARABIAN NIGHTS – but even though they never rised to the level of the great THIEF OF BAHGDAD – they did make lovely lush films that yearn for yesteryear with every frame. I love it!

GRUMPY OLD MEN (Blu Ray)

I love just anything that has Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in it. But I do have this unbridled fear that Travolta and Denzel will remake GRUMPY OLD MEN in 30 years. And that really does scare me. With Winona Ryder as Ann Margret. UGH! Nightmare, go away! The snow has never looked so good as it does on this Blu Ray. A warm blanket movie.

THE UNIVERSE: The Complete Season Two (Blu)

Amongst my favorite series. THE UNIVERSE. Like those of you with my illness, I do have the 3 seasons that are on DVD. But man, I much prefer this series in Blu Ray form as the graphics and the beauty are all enhanced by the massive leap in resolution. This is a pure geek show and as a pure geek, I loves it.

NEAR DARK

I can’t stop laughing at this video box. Look at that. Golden eyes – that white white skin. Yes, all you lovers of TWILIGHT come and gather around this DVD box. Take it home with you. And discover one of the most badass Vampire films in the history of badass Vampire films. But the thought of the Twilighters discovering this way cooler film is but a small dash of the glee that the video box gives me. It’s just way too funny. Way too hilarious!

John Barrymore Collection ( SHERLOCK HOLMES / DR. JEKYLL AND MR HYDE / THE ROGUE / TEMPEST )

Pretty much everyone I know has seen Barrymore’s brilliant performance in DR. JEKYLL AND MR HYDE, but for me – I got giddiest about the 1922 SHERLOCK HOLMES which co-starred an incredibly youthful William Powell and Roland Young. I love it. Then there’s THE BELOVED ROGUE and THE TEMPEST. I haven’t put either in yet, but THE BELOVED ROGUE is the one I’m dying to check out. It is supposed to be an adventure romp for Barrymore – and that’s cool. This is a set that I’m quite anxious to get through. Barrymore was one of our first GREAT actors. And I can vouch for 2 of the 4 films in this set as being Barrymore at his best. Check this out!

Ok – that’s it for this week. Here’s what I’ll be checking out next week: GI JOE season 1, Criterion FOR ALL MANKIND Blu Ray, THE TOWERING INFERNO (Blu), THE EDGE OF LOVE, THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON / CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER / HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS on Blu Ray, BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT, REC, I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (Blu), DON’T TOUCH THE WHITE WOMAN and more…

You must have more respect for Harry's reviews than I do. Half the time it's orgiastic gushing that has no direct relevance to the film in question. The other half of the time, it's just him reminiscing about seeing the movie for the first time. Neither of those things should lead to writer's block, unless he's a retarded red-headed baboon who can barely fashion a complete sentence. Wait a minute...

    by elgato

Fantastic release - kudos Sony! The 48 minute retro docu narrated by Shaw is in darn good condition and presented 1080p I believe as well as 40 or so minutes of deleted scenes from the 3 hour TV version of the movie. The Deep looks and sounds BEAUTIFUL...oh, and that CBS Special logo and music before the docu totally took me back to 1977 in an unexpected way...

The Deep is a great memory from my youth. Bisset's boobs were like a freaking starting gun for me. They deserved equal billing with the other actors. I also thought the fight with the boat motor was scary and suspenseful. I saw the movie multiple times, too.....not so much for the great fight scene though.

These aren't reviews. Harry does review a movie about once a month if he doesn't have sore throat, but the DVD release post aint it. All he does for these posts is write a few sentences that usually have something to do with the movie he's supposed to be talking about, and then a sentence that is actually about the movie or box set. Writer's block does not apply to this post. Wow, after two weeks of nothing, he gave us eleven little quips regarding about half the releases this week. Makes you feel sorry for a few of the writers in this site who are actually working to keep it alive.

THE LOST BOYS is a fun flick but im tempted to go with FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. However that has nothing to do with the vampires and everything to do with Salma's snake dance, so it would be kinda thinking with my dick.

    Best Vampire Flicks

    by wrath4771

    1. Lost Boys 2. Near Dark 3. Let The Right One In. Feel free to rearrange the order of these movies, but I grew up on the first two movies so they carry a bit more weight with me. Plus, Keifer Sutherland is the baddest of bad as vampires ever. I love the Near Dark vampires, but Keifer would have wiped the floor with all of them and still have the energy to take out a Christmas tree.

We Should Give Up, It's Over

    by rebeck2

A couple months ago I wrote on the talkback for Harry's DVD column that my favorite feature on AICN had turned into what felt like a joyless burden. I tried to remind Harry of the fun and excitement he used to bring to digging through new releases for rare treasures and how that geeky film love was so contagious. But now I see it's over, no use bugging him about it. Just drop the column, Harry. You're not enjoying it anymore and barely doing it at all. I'm sure there's good reasons - the fact that less and less great catalogue titles are being released, the fact that with Blu-ray you're just repeating earlier reviews only a short time later. And I'm sure life has gotten in the way too. It's just the internet, after all. It's too bad, but it's worse to see you barely get up the energy to write these little review haikus. They look like you wrote them underwater while holding your breath. If you have nothing much to say, why say it? Maybe you should just pick one DVD release you're excited about a week (or even a month) and go to town. That would be better than this slow dying of a column... Thanks for earlier though - it was "cool" while it lasted.

I looked and looked and even posted and begged for a review while Knowing was at the Box Office. I wanted to read a review from you as Eberts was sooo high and every other critic was flaming it as a piece of shit..This film is a definate divider among audiences.. I wound up going only because a few talkbackers who agreed that your lack of coverage
of a major cast Science Fiction Film was about par for the course.
I now see Knowing banners all over the site and you saying in your late coverage of even the DVD that its great and you love it..Well sir I'm starting to question the integrity of your coverage..Here is a genre film that got zero and I mean zero coverage by you and your site reporters until a banner went up and then finnally it gets a few lines about how much you loved it on DVD..To little to late for a fine film that should have done much better at the Box office but nobody at this site even bothered to review it.Well done...

Herzog's NOSFERATU is great - one of the very best.

    by lonegun

It's both disturbing and epic, and Klaus Kinski is freaky. I'd also venture to mention the original DRACULA with Bela Lugosi, quite a production for its time. LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is definitely a major contribution to vampire cinema - fantastic.TWILIGHT was just juvenile fluff. Hard to believe Harry raved about it, and didn't put his weight behind LET THE RIGHT ONE IN while it was in the theaters.

I rewatched Interview a couple of weeks back. And followed it the next night with Queen of the Damned. Now, I wasn't unaware of the bile thrown it's way, but it was lent to me by a friend who said it's not THAT bad, and a bunch of my friends worked on it. So I thought what the hey. BUT, I sure wasn't prepared for THAT much suckage! So, so scarred...

But yeah, Interview is pretty good, I love Coppola's Dracula (I'd love it a LOT more without Keanu), and Nosferatu, and Let the Right One In is incredible. I had the Blu-ray already but STILL went to see it when it came out at the cinema. Damn it's great.

by exploring the notion of a child who remained cursed/stuck in time/development but not in intellect. The narrative pun on being 'eternally young'. But I love that LTROI took that a step further in terms of being curse BOTH ways. And the last shot is the best send-your-mind-back-through-the-film since Fight Club. So great.

When you have a site that won't even cover a genre release that it was supposedly tailor made for..well I don't know what to think... Now Harry reviews it although only in two sentances
when it gets a banner on his site.
Like I said ..I used to value the information this site once gave..
It was somewhat helpful in determiming where I would spend my hard earned cinema dollars...Not anymore...If a major film in the genre that this site professes so much love for can't even get a review during it's box office run there must be something happening underneath the surface to warrant that kind of ommision..It wasn't a very busy week with this genre at the box office when the film opened
and I still wonder to this day why Harry wouldn't review the film...

I don't think it is a conspiracy, just laziness also I don't think this site has ever had love for Nic Cage. And, honestly is Harry would have given more than a couple lines for his DVD mention (I won't call it a review) people would be crucifying him for being a sellout because of all the ad banners you mention. Are you suggesting that the only reason Harry mentioned Numbers was because of the ads and that he didn't really like it but felt obligated?

These days Nicholas Cage gets a lot of heat on the net just for being in a movie. As though people haven't seen Adaptation, Matchstick Men, Leaving Las Vegas, Raising Arizona, The Weather Man, Bringing Out the Dead, hell even Face/Off or The Rock. I think a lot of people just see the famous Wicker Man reel as an excuse to be shallow and dismiss the actor outright. (It would be nice if he'd stop wearing the awful hair-pieces though. It's the 21st century, we can survive a balding actor.)

And all of you ranking it above Near Dark need to really sort through some stuff, you know what I mean? Or just be happy being gay, which is absolutely valid if that's the case.

Fright Night is better than Lost Boys, but Near Dark is absolutely better than them all. Oklahoma freaking vampires, for god's sake. Awesome scenes, fantastic dialog:

He's been bit, but he ain't been bled.

And dead means dead without dying, which means you'll be real uncomfortable for a long, long time.

    Beware of The Chaos Experiment

    by skimn

Its a Blockbuster exclusive AKA a direct-to-DVD release. I was curious because it was filmed in the Grand Rapids area of Michigan, although the filming was limited to some exteriors and interiors of the Amway Grand Hotel and some indistinct nighttime driving scenes. It stars Val Kilmer who has definately seen better days (I felt like I could climb into the pores of his increasingly bulbous nose), and is a hoot as he overacts the part of a schizo doctor, with a mysterious mission. Or does he?? Eric Roberts and Patrick (has he done anything since Starship Troopers?) Muldoon costar as two of six people trapped in a steam room, trying to badly overact each other to death. Its kind of an eco-themed Saw, with a "twist" ending, but still makes no sense. Armand Assante actually comes out looking not bad as the investigating cop, only because everyone else is so bad. Unless you like to see some once talented people scrap the B-movie bottom, then skip Chaos.

    by mr dark

Ya know, I like the info sites like these provide..but reviews that can make or break and kill the potential of a film like Knowing, Speed Racer, and countless others at the box office all must be suspect nowadays.
When giants battle it out for the win at the box office I'm sure manyh marketing reviews are bought and paid for good ones for the film being paid for and maybe even bad ones for it competiton...who knows how the grease gets spread out in a campaign to make a film #1 at the box office..I know that being # 1 is most important at the studios but films aren't being made to be great so often anymore.. there being made to start franchises and sell burgers at burger kings and toys at toy stores, blah , blah , blah...So when a good film comes along and gets "overlooked" I tend to think of other terms then overlooked..and baby thats no conspiracy..

Is fucking great, It's utter bonkers.

dont't understand the anti religeos stance against it- There isn't any logical religeous propaganda in this film, I think you'd have a hard time promoting aliens as gods in most churches other than scientologist ones. The film is engineered for Nic Cage to save the day. I bet they didn't tell nic he wouldn't save the day till the last day of filming, that's real pain in his eyes! Most films wimp out, I thought the whole set up would be about how prediction and destiny don't neccesarily pan out. I thought we'd get to 'that day'and we'd have a little epilogue relating back to Cages lecture about chance in evolution, but no- it's gloriously bonkers and I'm surprised it got made too.

If not myself I'm sure one of my buddies will rent them. It just takes a lot these days to get my ass into a movie theater what with the $10+ admission price and the fact that I have Blu-Ray and Widescreen at home. I still love seeing films in the theater, but more often than not, if a film really doesn't need to be seen in the theater, I'm waiting for Blu-Ray/DVD.

Another great vampire flick - HABIT

    by lonegun

Larry Fessenden's breakout feature was low-budget but ultra-inspired, kind of like the original CAT PEOPLE, in that regard. You might not find it in the average BLOCKBUSTER video store, but if you can get your hands on it, I highly recommend it. Fessenden uses vampirism to explore one person's unhealthy addiction to another. It's creepy, wonderfully acted and hard to forget. It lingers in the mind.

The reason I read Harry's DVD column

    by stabby

is that it often points me to things I otherwise would have missed or overlooked, like Near Dark this week, which I must confess I've never seen. Also, I will probably check out Knowing, not because Harry loves it, but because I've heard enough from others in this Talkback to believe that it may be something that interests me. While I share everyones disdain for many of Harry's sentence long non-reviews this column does serve a purpose and the real reviews come from the Talkbacks.

I guess people need to be told what to like these days

    by stooopider

Peer pressure appears to be everything these days, which is scary as it doesn't seem to be limited to kids like I remember. Adults seem to need to check what critics say before developing an opinion of their own, because to genuinely dislike a film and have all the critics love it would make you look like a bit of a retard, right?
I figure if you enjoy a movie, that should be the end of it, but you can tell a lot of talkbackers are slaves to other peoples opinions. Hell, I went to see Ice Age 3 with my 10 year old son yesterday and had a blast. Rotten Tomatoes gives it something like 45%. Animation was cool, plot was predictable, but my 10 year old laughed his ass off and I didn't hate it. Critics can take a big jump, i'm bored of their pretentious opinions.

This is almost funny that here are four people that just began talking about Knowing being a great film (it is)..Now I here talk among us about how so many reviews get it wrong (maybe thats the point..maybe dis-information..)
I don't give two- fucks what someone thinks about a film or much less anything else..I'll make up my own mind what I'll pay to see or not see based on my interests but..I want to thank whoever it was (I forget so sue me.)that spoke so highly of this film when I originally went here looking for the Site's review..
I really enjoyed this film in the theater..I along with you four intelligent talkbackers..at least brought some notice to an overlooked gem.. Which if overlooked by the auteur of this site was at least brought to notice by it's readers..thanks

    I Enjoyed Push

    by kevinwillis.net

My daughter loved it. She also asked, "Is it like that movie where the people could go anywhere they want and those other people were chasing them?"Meaning, of course, Jumper. So, cut from the same cloth, but I enjoyed both stupid movies. Two movies that wanted to be franchises *so bad* that will probably never have a sequel, much less a franchise, to them.

Oh yeah.. I remember a quote from Alexander Jodorowsky

    by mr dark

That made me think a lot about why some films make it and some don't.
He was asked about the film El Topo and if he thought it was a great film..He said something to the effect that " If you are great that El topo is a great film !!
When you take that statement it sounds seldf serving on the surface but I think what he really meant was that If one isn't capable of understanding the message or if it isn't well conveyed to the audience than it will not be a succesful experience.
There lies the problem with honest reviews some won't understand or like what they see while others may find it's greatness with ease.
Many of the greatest films don't find it's audience till many years after they had first failed because the public wasn't ready or able to get the message or appriceiate its content..

    And honestly-I liked it.
I am pretty fond of Alex Proyas-but mostly since he made the Crow and Dark City.So I gave in.
    Honestly, it was pretty decent.
The story did have a good bit of unexpected turns, and ended alot "darker" than I expected. For a few mnitues-it felt like the distant cousin the HORRIBLE "Next" film he made a few years back. But sure enough-it had 3 GREAT disaster scenes that were pretty shocking. The effects were decent, and the theme was kinda of engaging to me. I dug it.So suck a cock all you haters

    by cherryvalance

I snickered at it for a while but then when I realized it was turning out to be the same as that song, I couldn't help but chuckle. And then I thought it was sorta cool that they went with that, even if it was a little but lifted from something else. Because they did hide for a long time what the real situation was and I don't see how you could have seen it coming. But by no means was it a "great" film. Some of it was really terrible/laughable.

I enjoyed Push but my enjoyment was enhanced by my reading of the tie-in comic put out by DC's Wildstorm imprint which fleshed out the backstory of Division and some of the characters (especially Carver) quite a bit. I don't know if I would have enjoyed the movie as much without having the supplemental materials, especially with its nonending, kicking off a franchise which after its box office receipts I doubt will continue (in film form at least).

    by mullah omar

John Landis directs a goofy, gory vampire movie with an over-the-top Robert Loggia and a cool, sexy Anne Parillaud? This film is totally in the spirit of many AICN readers. Maybe everyone was too busy brooding over grunge to have noticed this in 1992.

Other under-represented but high-quality vampire flicks would be THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS, though you have to be in the mood for a quiet, slow sort of comedy in the original PINK PANTHER film's vein, and CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER, which to be honest I have mostly forgotten other than to remember that I loved it when I was a kid.

Saw it last night. I was blown away, I was expecting to hate it, but I really enjoyed it. Don't know if I would have liked it as much in the theater, but at home it was late and competely dark and I the sound on full blast. It made for a spooky kind of thriller, I think it makes up for how bad I, Will Smith was. I don't know if it will hold up on repeat viewings, but going through it once I was fully into it and willing to go where ever it went and I liked it. It was marketed horribly, it looked like a sequel to Next.

Like I said, probably had a lot to do with my viewing experience which I think has a lot to do with someone's enjoyment of a film. Had I turned it on around 7 and was still eating dinner, and explaing it all to my lady. Being told it was too loud by her and seeing her hate it (she hates end of the world stuff) I don't know if I would like it as much. But I do know the final scene with Rose Byrne was fucking great and the train scene was fantastic with the shot through the front window was great. I may watch it again tonight to see if I still liked it but I need to watch that fucking movie Harry's animation is from.

    by skimn

predates True Blood, with the Southern vampire "family". And I'm sure the bar scene influenced Cameron's beginning of T2. AND, it has Bill Paxton's second best role following Aliens. Sure, after 20 years, its gotten a little wobbly, but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses.

    by cobra--kai

Fuck that's a lot of vamp movies. I think Arthurrex007 wins the prize for sheer quantity (and for recognising the importance of sapphic vampirism).
INNOCENT BLOOD? John Landis? How the fuck have I not seen this movie. It's on the list now.
Also does anyone recall an Eighties flick called WAXWORK which starred Patrick MacNee and the kid from GREMLINS? It had some vamps in, along with other monsters. Remember it as being a cool film with a similar vibe to FRIGHT NIGHT and MONSTER SQUAD.

Vampire in Brooklyn (also known as Wes Craven's Vampire in Brooklyn) is a 1995 American comedy horror film directed by Wes Craven, and starring Eddie Murphy and Angela Bassett. Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison, John Witherspoon, Zakes Mokae, and Joanna Cassidy co-star. Eddie Murphy wrote the film's script, along with Vernon Lynch and Charlie Murphy. In addition to playing the main character, Murphy also plays an alcoholic preacher and a foul-mouthed Italian gangster.

The film garnered a loyal cult following for being one of Wes Craven's experiment films.

    no one has disccused KNOWING.
If you havn't seen it-DON'T READ!!!
It has some fairy interesting stuff going on.Such as the idea of RELIGION/ALIENS. did anyone realize the aliens had what APPEARED to be angel wings?(at the end).So I thought more on it-and I wonder-DID they want to imply that there is NO god=BUT that eprhaps aliens were there all along in the evolving of mankind?Or perhaps its a double outlook-where as it can go both ways-if you think it's an angel-and the whole film was "god's plan", then so be it. If you think that they implied that ALIENS were there all along-and we simply mis'interpreted it, so be it too.But if you hvn't seen it, watch. Then, put it in a locked box for a year-and watch it again!

    by mattmanreturns

I just assumed they were angels because of the wings... but I suppose it's possible they were aliens that happened to have wings, which supplied the basis for humanity's image of angels. I like the ending because it leaves it open for interpretation. I also liked that it (for me anyway) was the first movie to successfully merge science and religion (and I'm an Atheist).

Yes this film did imply a few things Ezekials wheel- the spaceships..Hell on Earth- the solar catastrophe.. The alien-angels. But what I liked most of all is that it was all there for the taking or leaving dependent on the viewers beliefs or non-beliefs.. Quite an unusual stane for a message film. I think this film will find it's audience on home viewing just as it has apparently started on this talkback board..I for one have
a renewed respect for the talkbacks in general..so let the

Knowing was good for disaster FX, the acting...

    by soylentmean

not so much. What worked was not really understanding what kind of movie it was. Was it a Horror movie, a straight up mystery, a drama with religious overtones? You can never really peg it down until the very end. I think I liked it overall because it's such a hodgepodge of genres thrown together. I think it will pick up a cult following on DVD. It's definitely worth a watch.

Knowing helped to further whet my appetite for Emerich's 2012 later this year. Disaster flicks are a great way to get a healthy dose of FX in a short amount of time. Escapist entertainment all the way!

Knowing was slammed for its quasi-religious undertones

    by stooopider

But I think most people in the US at least, still have hang-ups on their own religion (ie. most people SAY they're christian, but only by name, and if they were honest with themselves, find the whole thing a bit silly and they just do it to stay out of trouble). I think this movie appealed to me a lot because i'm the very definition of an atheist, I find organised religion dangerous and silly, but I'll never preach at people about it and respect their beliefs, no matter how far-fetched they appear. I think that was the thinking behind the movie. I loved the concept of these 'angel' aliens descending to save the two humans, and i'm assuming by the other ships at the end, various animals, just like Noah. It tickled me that the bible was written by someone who witnessed these aliens long ago during another catastrophe (a flood perhaps!)
Anyway, I think the reviewers in general got it wrong for this movie and I hope it develops a large blu-ray following.

was NOT signifcant other than to emphsize that the aliens/angels were a sort of NOAH'S ARK-and I'm pretty sure they made sure to feature the rabbits so that viewers wouldn't question whether it was simply just humans that were saved-but animals as well.

Best film Nick Cage has been in since Leaving Las Vegas. The images of the doomed Earth were pretty effective and the religion/alien proposition was pretty intelligent sci fi. Naturally any brainwashed religious types will immediately object to the flick so that counts for most of the USA giving it a bad review.

    Favorite vampire movies:

    by baryonyx

    In no particular order:

    Bram Stoker's Dracula

    Dracula (Lugosi version)

    Dracula (Chris Lee version)

    Dracula (Frank Langella version)

The Fearless Vampire Killers (brilliant atmosphere)

    Brides of Dracula

    Andy Warhol's Dracula

Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires (silly but fun)

Blood of the Virgins (cheap & strange vamp movie from Argentina)

Martin (technically not a vampire film, but a psychological thriller about a guy who thinks he's a bloodsucker)

    Blade

    And:
The Night Stalker was a great vampire TV movie. The 1970s BBC Dracula serialization was also top notch.

Jack Palance Was Dracula In A TV Movie

    by red dawn don

I think it was in 1973. Yes, a big thanks to IMDB. He also was in THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE (1968). Both are good films but MAY only be found on bootleg dvds, someday, if at all. I still rememer those HOT vampire chicks in the first film. They were sexy and evil scary at the same time. (Cold chills down my spine.) Seems like PBS had a british Dracula movie on a short time ago, that was decent scary. The name of it escapes me. I did not like THE LOST BOYS (1987) at first, but now I enjoy its CAMPINESS and the PETER PAN angle. Jami Gertz was a hot in it too as STAR the vampire. She later grew into SUPER HOT MILFiness.
