Joseph Gordon-Levitt And Zooey Deschanel Go Out In A "Blaze Of Glory" As SID AND NANCY!

Published at:  Jul 07, 2009 8:57:00 PM CDT

Beaks here...

There's an amusing scene in Marc Webb's upcoming (500) DAYS OF SUMMER (limited release begins July 17th) in which Zooey Deschanel's title character, Summer, confounds Joseph Gordon Levitt's hopelessly romantic Tom by suggesting that they're in a "Sid and Nancy" relationship. A few seconds later, she completely emasculates him by clarifying that he's the Nancy of the duo.

Here's the scene (I should note that I wasn't aware it was online until reading Monika Bartyzel's piece for Cinematical):

And now, in a very clever bit of viral marketing, here are Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt making like Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb for Mean Magazine's "Cinemash" project.

Though Deschanel acquits herself nicely as the knife-toting Sid, Gordon-Levitt's commitment to what could've been just another Funny-or-Die-style lark is stunning. He's actually kind of heartbreaking as the distraught, ill-fated Nancy. Not that I'm surprised. As anyone who's been paying attention since MYSTERIOUS SKIN knows, Levitt's firmly established himself as one of his generation's most talented actors. I haven't seen him phone in a role yet (though we'll see if I'm still singing that tune after GI JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA.

Oh, and I'd highly recommend that you check back next week for Cinemash's second offering: TRON as performed by Cheech & Chong.

    JGL as The JOKER

    by stuntman mikey

Its been said on here before, but Joseph Gordon Levitt is the natural person to attempt to stand in the immortal Heath Ledger's shoes to reprise the Joker role in another Batman sequel. JGL not only has the talent to pull it off, but he really does look quite similar to Heath. As i was watching 500 Days of Summer, i couldnt get over the resemblance!

500 Days of Summer is such a great flick, and JGL is the reason that the movie will be remembered for years to come. It just has that instant classic feel to it, and anyone who doesnt smile from ear to ear during the Hall & Oates "You Make My Dreams Come True" number during 500 Days deserves to be stranded on an island with Rush Limbaugh.

I'd be tempted to say this has got TOO much indie hipster cache with Zooey and Levitt, but JGL can do no wrong in my book, so I'll prolly make it.

    by broosethescharuk

...I completely agree. Ledger was great, but people just need to get over the whole dead guy reverence thing and realize that TDK should only be the beginning of the Batman/Joker conflict/relationship/whatever. JGL would be a terrific replacement, as far as I'm concerned. If only to bring the audience's expectations back down to zero to allow a good actor to catch them by surprise, the way Ledger did.

or perpetuate the ridiculous idea that Sid and Nancy are a good example of a couple that are in love. They were pathetic, talentless drug addicts who killed each other because they were psychotic.

While I agree that JGL has the chops to replace Ledger as the Joker, I don't see it happening. Firstly, any performance, no matter how good, bad or ugly would inevitably be compared (negatively, I might add) to Ledger's. And JGL would run the risk of either mimicking Ledger's and coming off as a wannabe, or making his own Joker and ending up skewing the established Joker we already love in this series. Sadly, I think when Ledger died, the Joker died with him.

    by drath

I honestly can't see anyone else filling that role now, not even Johnny Depp, but I really hope his stint as Cobra Commander doesn't destroy all the good will I have for him in an over-the-top villain role. Of course maybe if that's dumb and no one thinks he can play the Joker, THEN Nolan will cast him. As it is, I think he may be seen as too obvious (stupid reason not to cast him, but it happens).

    by ebonic_plague

    As for the Joker...

    by ebonic_plague

...I say recast the role. Heath nailed his version, but who would've predicted that from just the casting? Not that I'd suggest him for the part, but when I saw Perry Farrell play with Jane's Addiction a while back, he looked EXACTLY like I'd always imagined the Joker looking in real life, right down to the weirdo rock-star zoot suit. We've had various Batmen in the same franchise, and that wasn't (necessarily) a deal-breaker for audiences. And the Joker is so ripe for interpretation, why not let someone else unexpectedly put their spin on the character? At the very least, I think that trying to recapture Heath's performance with JGL doing (essentially) an impression of Ledger is much more of a lame proposition than letting someone else just rip into the role again.

    by monkey butler

If he was gonna be in Batman 3 it would be as a 5 minute cameo at best, like the Scarecrow. And that's as it should be. TDK set up some pretty interesting places for a third story to go, but none of those requires the Joker.

    Third batman with JGL

    by dancetothebeatofthelivingdead

What they should do is have a scene in the next Batman where GodBale has to go to Arkham and maybe seek help from or....i don't know....somehow get JGL on the screen as the Joker for a full scene with a long monologue. 1. It'll cure our insatiable lust for more Joker fun-time. 2. It'll acknowledge that the Joker is still around and that he and Batman haven't forgotten about each other. 3. It'll set up a fourth movie if need be which will be five or six years removed from Ledger's performance where the Joker could make a re-appearance. 4. Most importantly, it could give us a test run with JGL as the Joker. Johnny Depp would crash and burn, he doesn;t have the wickedness and darkness to pull it off. Even without Burton, he's been Burtonized to the point of no return. Levitt is the only choice, and one scene would show that to the world. But, as we know, Hollywood doesn't have the ballsto replace Ledger's Joker so we roll the dice on someone else playing another villain even though they will most likely fall more short of the bar than Levitt would have as the Joker.

It was very mediocre. The sound mix was wrong (voice levels way too low) and the editing at the "big moment" was not satisfying at all. There are some good parts to it- nice lighting in places, good camera work as well. But overall, it's under-average.

My only hope is that when the DVD comes out, there is a bonus feature where you can watch the movie in sequential fashion as opposed to how it skips around (at least it labels what day it is so you can follow as opposed to guessing what comes when in the story).
