Dorff and Norrington returning for a BLADE prequel trilogy?

Published at:  Jul 07, 2009 3:15:42 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Looks like BLADE is coming back... but without Blade. Somehow.

Listen, I like Stephen Dorff... I have since I was a kid and watched THE GATE, like, 700 times. I liked him in the original Blade, but I don't know if I really NEED to see a Blade prequel starring his character let alone a three movie telling of Deacon Frost's rise through the vampire ranks.

The Sunday Mail has a chat with a guy named "Stehpen" Dorff, whom I am going to assume is closely related to Stephen, where he confirms this series of films are in the works.

However, the most interesting bit of information in the story is that The Sunday Mail is under the impression that BLADE director Stephen Norrington is handling this new series of films. I always thought the dude got the shit end of the stick with the stillborn mess that was THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN and would love to see him come back to filmmaking, prove that wasn't all his fault.

So, I guess I'm mixed on this news. I hope it's fun if it happens at all. What do you folks think?

Blade 2 was solid, although it pretty much ruined the continuity of the 1st one.
Blade fucking rocked. What an underrated movie. Wesley Snipes did the best "tortured hero" I've ever seen in that movie. I just wished someone could replicate that in the role of Bruce Wayne.

    by irishraidersfan

Personally, in my opinion, the guy's a bit of a dick. I found him to be not very professional, and there was a woman in the make-up department who he upset quite badly. (Sure, I was an extra, and it was Space Truckers, but it meant I got to stand around (and see) a lot...) What was he last decent in, even?

Leather blazer ;) seriously that little intro scene where he first fully speaks in the white collar shirt and leather blazer is something I used to put on a-b repeat all the time. I love two button leather blazers. They could show how he gets it or why he starts liking them, kinda like River/young Indy getting the fedora put on his head in last Crusade ;)

is actually very talented. Gentlemen is well shot and directed, its just the script that is a little, how shall we say, underwhelming. Adding Tom Sawyer didn't help either. But Norrington is in a class above JJ TV Abrams, McG, Bayhem etc.

Really, where has this guy been lately? I'm sure he could use a paycheck.

I'm not really sold on the idea of making a freaking TRILOGY around a character that got killed in the first film in another trilogy. My most optimistic prediction is that the first film gets a theatrical release but that the other two pad what ends up being a pretty ambitious direct-to-video series.

    All hail Dorff.

There's no way they'd plan three movies around the villain from a movie that came out like ten years ago. Maybe one DTV prequel, but three? And isn't this more Red Dragon syndrome with the age thing? Dorff looks good and all, but he doesn't look younger than he did in Blade. And if they'll do this, why not Blade 4?

    by larry sellers

NO one is interested in this. It will bomb and be left unfinished. I like Dorff too. So let's see him in something original and not in something that's still milking a ten year old, DEAD franchise. That shitty TV series was the last nail in the coffin. No one gives a fuck. And without Snipes? Really? Adapt another shitty comic. Remake an old, already shitty horror flick. Do something "constructive" that will actually make money. Not this.

    by geekhaterssuck

The success of Twilight, True Blood, etc. will lead to tons of rumors about useless vampire flicks. Forget crap like this. I would love see one, just one decent Dracula movie based on the book. Don't get me wrong the one Coppola did was ok, but Dracula is a monster not some love sick dog. Anyway I digress, if they are so keen on flooding the market with vampire movies I'm sure they could do better than this. Like I don't know oh a Castlevania movie where the script doesn't suck? Whatever happened to that Dracula Year one or whatever it was going to be called? Blade? I would love to see more just reboot it. The last one was just a vehicle to get Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel screen time so they could launch that incredible idea of a Nightstalkers franchise. Gee how did that work out? The idea is worthless.

    by cellar door

And though it's an infamous line at this point, I'm still not fond of obvious one-liners and 'Muther fuckers always trying to ice skate uphill" is one of the worst but overall the first Blade is a brilliant comic book movie. The intermittent time-lapse camera work...the focus on Blade's car, etc...all great stuff. Some of the acting is slightly hammy but Dorff and Snipes we're perfect casting (Dorff is without question the best overall villain in the Blade movie series). Not to mention, anyone who puts Tracey Lords in a movie now is a genius in my book.

maybe this trilogy will "Rhyme" with the regular trilogy!

    by jesiah

Just like lucas did with star wars. In the first part of the prequel trilogy, the man (or chick) who sired Deacon Frost will be bloodied up and dying asking for dorf to kill him and dorf reluctantly gives him/her a stake to do it with. Cut to Dorf walking away emotional yet manning up while his sire kills themself. Then they can completely negate this badass death and resurrect his sire for part 2 so they can say some more witty one-liners and then inexplicably die a dumb death in the early stages of part 3. Yay im a screenwriter! Now off I go to make unborn 2 with the hot chick that used to be in kindergarten cop when she was a young'un!

Bale was really good in Batman Begins but his bruce wayne was far from tortured. As far as Dark Knight goes I did not like his performance. It was wooden, talky and unemotive. I think the best performances are ones where you can tell what the character is feeling without having to spell it out in dialoge, too often in the dark knight we are given endless dialoge explaining their actions and feelings, instead of just seeing them.

    Lame Idea...

    by the_ritty

Can't we just get the apocalypse ending originally for Blade III and go from there...? Why did they remove it from B3? And for the record RHURGAH Bale stinks as Batman, his Bruce Wayne is a douche bag whiner who made no real choices on his own - he just ran away from everything. Young Bruce Wayne MADE the choice to perfect his mind, body etc. to fight crime and stop what happened to him from happening to anyone else. Thats what makes Bats the best superhero - his inner strength. That power is greater than even Superman. Nolan's Batman...to me he resembles nothing of the Dark Knight... Crybaby Bruve was lucky that blond bitch came out of NOWHERE and shot Joe Chill first ... Batman being slapped like some trick by Katie Holmes...lame lame lame... I hate Bale (now)...he stunk up T4 as well... KEATON is, was and always WILL BE BATMAN... As much as you marks love those flicks I'll admit the new bat films are more well rounded films but neither 2 have a thimble's worth of the imagination or fantasy of Burtons... and NO ONE has gotten bats right yet because as I RECALL his first appearance was in DETECTIVE COMICS!! He is the dark knight detective...yet never have I seen him solve a FUCKING MYSTERY... MASK OF THE PHANTASM IS STILL THE BEST BAT FLICK...hands down...

1st Blade Only Real Comic Movie of the 90s

    by autodidact

Aside from Batman Returns and Batman Forever, Blade was the only real comic book movie to come out of the 90s. It's a classic. I hated Blade 2 (reminded me of a video game) and have not seen the third one.

Blade 2 ruined continuity of part 1?

    by bouncy x

someone mentioned this up there, forget who but could they explain that a little more? the only thing i can think is Whistler but being a sequel they "had" to bring him back and it worked in their favor that we only hear the gunshot and not see it. yes it was still silly but not too surprising. so if that isnt the continuity issue what is?

    more Blade, yes...

    by the__natural74

...but this doesn't really make sense. I know Hollywood execs are desperate to re-polish old shit and make it shine again, but I wouldn't believe this story if Stephen Dorff himself told me while visiting the set and crew of the "Deacon Frost Chronicles Vol. 1".
Seriously. Blade is awesome. Whistler is awesome. Deacon Frost is pretty cool. But this makes no sense.
Blade: Trinity fucked up what I thought was the natural conclusion to the trilogy...Blade coming face to face with his SISTER! First movie he discovers his Mom is alive and has been fucking Deacon; second movie he gets surprised by a young black teenage girl who has mad skillz and a quick posturing fight is teased before her identity is revealed; the third film should have had the girl grown up and the new "apprentice" of the vampire nation.
Am I right? Or am I right? Going to Dracula, oh sorry..."Drake" was dumb. Otherwise I liked Reynolds and Biel in the movie (chicks w/ bow & arrows are hot - see Keira/King Arthur). But the story pushed the movie on the lame side.

And I think it should be an "I Am Legend" type film. Blade vs La Magra Vampires. And throw some very powerful Reapers in there also. Bring back Abigail Whistler as a sidekick, and Hannibal King reverted back to a vampire. Stephen Dorff as the malcontent Blood God, waiting for Blade to end his reign.

    MANZILLA

    by thelastcleric

The Bruce Wayne in the comics rarely lets his tortured psychology break through. As to Bale's Batman performance being wooden, Batman in the comics is often accused of having little to no heart because he so rarely allows his emotion to seep through the cowl. He is stoic, disciplined and almost always emotionally detached which is why he's often portrayed as an outsider in the Justice League and even within his own circle of Bat-heroes. That said, I think Bale did a great job of emoting through the costume, specifically in the scenes where he watches over Gordon's family after he fakes his death and the scene where he stands amongst the ruins of the factory where Rachel died. Other than the voice sounding a bit off at times, I really think Bale has effectively nailed both characters. (And yes, Bruce Wayne and Batman are two separate entities)

    by larry sellers

When he killed Udo Kier's character and then is on the Board of Vampires or whatever. How utterly uninteresting this is. It's just a lame cash-in on the Blade franchise and I think they could just revisit Blade (WITH the actual character and actor in the film) and do some good. I'm one of the few that loves the first film and has mixed feelings about 2 and 3. I thought the original was great. Good action, good characters, gritty and bloody. That's all it needed. No sequel, no prequel about the villain. But I guess if there has to be one, I'd prefer Norrington.

It was very sad, but dignified. I, and my family, have met members of the Jackson family before, several times, and I can tell you that they are good people. I can't speak for Poppa Joe, but the rest of the family are very kind. Sometimes when I forget that Janet is a real human being, I remind myself of the day that I met her, it was very unusual, and brief...but she was very kind, that being the unusual part...as most people, I find, are just not that openly generous, and with complete strangers, at that? She made a rich impression on me that I will never forget.

Is Quint ever going to explain why a story from Oct 2008 piqued his interest all of a sudden?

    by media messiah

The last two Blade movies were bad, I admit it, but, such foul language and visuals??? You sound like a white woman who was on Love Lines about 4 weeks ago, who had an obsession with Chili Dogging???David Goyer destroyed Blade, I'll admit that...but can't we be a bit less colorful with the visuals???

StarBlitzer> Great quote! Kristofferson rules! "But you're so big?"
cymbalta4thedevil> While I enjoy the Blade discussion, you're right...there should be some acknowledgment this is a questionable source story in the first place. Not only was Stephen's name misspelled, but whoever put this story online missed the word "be" when quoting Dorff describing the new trilogy - "It will cool".
Yeah, I'm sure Dorff said "Frost is the one character I can't shake"...and he'll say the same thing if Britney gets him to be in another video.
"Blade" was about...um, Blade. Whistler is the shit, but as virtually everybody has suggested on this board, nobody gives a pant load about a Deacon Frost movie. Nothing against Dorff or his performance in the movie, but this story has zero credibility.

That Quint linked to a 2008 story instead of just saying that Comics 2 Film had the updated info from Norrington, which Empire and Sci-Fi Wire also commented on yesterday. Probably other sites did too. No shame in not being the first with a story.

A Blade Prequel Trilogy not starring Wesley Snipes? No.

A Deacon Frost Trilogy starring Stephen Dorff? Fuck yes!

The pros definitely outweigh the cons.

    Stephen Dorff is awesome.

Why not have him do Blade 4?

    by darksider

And without David Goyer. Who would want to see a movie(s) about a guy who got his ass handed to him by Blade when he was a god? If you suck when you're god-like, how much more interesting were you to begin with? Blade 1 was the only one worth watching anyway.
