TRON/TR2N/Whatever - There's Script Review Online!!

Published at: July 3, 2009, 10:57 a.m. CST by merrick

Merrick here...
CC2K has an extensive look at an early draft of the new TRON film. There are SPOIELRS afoot, so be warned. CC2K encapsulates their reaction thusly:
A look at an early draft of Tron 2 reveals a script filled with problems and potential. It's a sequel in the Die Hard 2 sense of the term. Meaning, it's less a pure continuation of the original narrative – like The Empire Strikes Back – and more a dutiful remake told on a larger scale and with a bigger budget. You know, like most sequels.
You can find CC2K's write-up HERE. As CC2K indicates, it's important to keep in mind this script review is from an early draft - many adjustments/changes may'vebeen made as the film went into production.

Shame about the religious allegory. Hope it gets put back in. Also, little worried that one of their characters' names is "dork" spelled backwards. Like insulting your target audience is actually funny. Besides "Keeg" or "Dren" would have been funnier.

Not in any massive, capacity, just in office payroll and stuff. Anyway, the general word on the inside is...if you want to know how NOT to make a movie, learn from these guys. It's been a horrible process for him and for all his crew. Now, that being said, the same words were spoken about the first two X Men movies and they actually turned out pretty kick ass.

    If they fuck this up...

    by JackLucas

I will literally beat the fuck out of someone. Seriously. If upon walking out of the auditorium after seeing the first showing available to me my mind has not been blown, fucked, sucked and swallowed I will grab the closest person of my size nearby and proceed to get thrown into jail for assault. That is how much TRON means to me. My connection to that movie borders on the religious. Yes, I am a sick fuck who by all rights should be locked up in a room alone all day and slipped beef jerkey and a tube to drink warm water through. But a motherfucker or two will indeed lose teeth if this film does not stand shoulder to shoulder with the original. And to those who will anonymously talk their shit on here... trust me, you wouldn't say one ill word about the original TRON around me if we were face to face. I am going to go get high now. If when I come back anyone has the balls to talk shit about TRON and include their name and address, I will come to where you live and punish your eyeballs with my fingertips and your women with my genitals.

I think you may be my hero. I think it will still be good. There were hacking scenes in the original where they showed the programmer, then the program doing the programmer's bidding. It does need the religious allegory though. It's going to be hard for Daft Punk to beat Wendy Carlos.

    by ackack

The same nostalgic reviewers who loved Land of the Lost will love Tron 2. Every review will start with their stupid memories of seeing Tron for the first time and being so affected by it blah blah blah. I don't if I will see this or not. Still don't get why they haven't released the comic con trailer in high quality at least on the web.

    by heavenlykid

I feel like I should say, I was saying that people on the inside are not happy with the process. That doesn't mean the movie is going to suck (that's why I brought up X-men, which had the same issue). And yes, you are right, I'm not on the inside. But my boy has never steered me wrong (and he's not just some guy they bring in. here's there day one). thank you though for respectfully disagreeing as opposed to calling me a goat fucker of some sort as is the norm in talkback world.

Fingers crossed whatever is going down that the end result is stunning, you pig fucker.

I had never seen tron untill about 2 years ago

    by southafricanguy

when a friend loaned me his old vhs copy. I must say that the costume design and production designs were really cool. Also, it had really good ideas (very ahead of their time imho...), but I have to say what a weak script and mundane direction. And I dont think its aged too well either. So Im wondering if people like tron so much because of nostalgia, or if they truly think its a good film. Would be interested to hear some opinions...

  • July 4, 2009, 9:01 a.m. CST

    What could/should have been

    by ThePilgrim

An estranged son makes sense to me. Flynn as a good guy sorta blows as well. The teaser suggested that he became corrupt somehow. I'd much rather see his character trying to cheat death. <P> Viruses are pretty lame. The Encom system requires power to work. If it was a real threat. The government could kill the power grid near it and put it to an end real quick. If it had a backup generator. Well you just go in and unplug it. They could cut the outside network cables as well. The only way to make a real world case that's mildly believable is to have Encom embed this virus onto the worlds servers where it would be harder to fix and deal with. Even then just like 9-11 the government could step in and shut down the worlds power, just like they parked all those planes. It's too bad, because Bill Gates and Steve Job's are great examples of who Flynn could have become. Steve Jobs had cancer. Look at how much that has effected Apple. <P> Flynn has an escape route. The Encom system. I would much rather have the film open up with him collapsing at a CES presentation while debuting some new virtual communication ap. We find out he has stage 2 pancreatic cancer. The press goes apeshit. Flynn spend the largest amount of money in known history to upgrade the encom system into the worlds strongest supercomputer to date. He signs a merger with a competitor to insure Encoms survival. Then he disappears. His son, who never knew his father gets the brewsters million visit from Flynns lawyers. Flynn addresses his estranged son in a video. Flynn tells his son that he's become the largest share holder in his fathers company and he wants him to takeover his role as president. The Son reluctantly accepts, more news reports that push us through a Flynn's sons ten year history with the company. Encom changes over from communication, game, and entertainment aps, to security system and defense programs. a person who works a computer recycling center find an old Encom drive. He takes it home and finds the Tron program on it. That or the MCP. Who's to say the there wasn't a backup made of the MCP. The code is outdated. This person downloads an emulator for space Paranoids from Encoms game division website. MCP or Tron goes live. They get out onto the net and return to the encom system through encoms web hosted servers- after seeing it in the que/cache history data. They wind up back in the Encom system. Then you go with the virus thing but you have it shopped online onto the worlds servers.

  • July 4, 2009, 9:15 a.m. CST

Actually given who computer savy Flynn is

    by ThePilgrim

I'm sure he knows where his estranged son is. He probably would send his son a video feed over the net onto his computer. His son could be surfing the net the screen goes black then a video comes up. Flynn gives his speach. About who things didn't work between him and Lora. Lora's dead now. This is also mentioned. Son doesn't believe what he's being told. Front door bell rings. His life is changed forever. Where's Flynn he's in the system. Enjoying his life. Until all that bad shit happens 10 years later. Tron and the MCP wind up in the system. The MCP takes over. Flynn and Tron figure out whats happening. Flynns son is called into Encom told theres something wrong in the research area by a tech. He is tricked by the MCP. The MCP zaps him into the encom system. something like that.

I would only look a script for a movie I'm anticipating

    by Arteska

If it was an adaptation of something I've already read or it was a movie I was plainly not planning to see. I get that seeing how a movie develops is interesting but it invites too much second guessing BEFORE you see it because then you develop your own biases for what should have been kept, dropped, more developed etc. instead of evaluating the choices that were made as a total. Instead stuff that goes through iterations (all scripts) get regarded as patchwork Frankensteins when in fact most creative work is done this way. Ugh long rant. Want to see this though and I agree with Zoidberg too. Damn kids.

    Tron is boring

    by HagCeli

Never bothered to watch it to the end, even when I was a kid. A stale, plodding, style-over-substance movie that couldn't hold a candle to other popular films of the era. It totally puzzles me why anyone would continue or even remake it. Geez, it's 27 years old, there's hardly a fanbase. Leave it alone.

    by darthkittens

Computers are being hacked left and right, forcing everyone to purchase a network security package. The hacks were instigated by the program's creator, who wants to take over the world. I think something as groundbreaking as Tron deserves better than a rehashed Sandra Bullock plot.

    Tron is boring

    by ominus

because u fucking idiots we already live in the 'age of information'. <p>computers, video games, virtual reality, world wide communincations,'teleportation',AIs,programs who think, even the techno jargon, and all the rest of the things, they are now parts of our world culture,we are accustomed with all these things, they are part of our life. <p>they they dont excite us anymore, they dont express something new or different, they are things we already know about, they are things we already live. <p>but the friggin movie was made 20 years ago,and it gave to the geeks of then generation,na glimpse of the things to come. <p>and when u r growing up and u see that with u,all these great things are happening, are becoming a reality, they grow together with you, then why is it so fucking strange to have a nostalgia love for that little movie?

This shit pisses me off. Just because someone knows a bit about the thought process that goes into scriptwriting (character invention, creation of events, shit like that) and has the ability to put in some constructive critisizm on it, it automatically means they're failures in life? What the fuck? This shit pisses me off. He does what he does. This stuped ass "get a life" shit. It's 2009. What IS a life anymore? Sports? Nothing more than a game. A job? Not a life. A distraction. A "soulmate"? The OPPOSITE of a life. Those fuckers KEEP you from living your life. What else is there? What the FUCK else is there? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Succumbing to our human instincts have become either illegal, socially unacceptable, or boring so fufilling our purpose as a species ain't happening. What can we do? Give and recieve entertainment. This guy's just making sure the entertainment is ENTERTAINING. What do you do? Make childish remarks about his virginity. Did it never occur to you that we are ALL lifeless nerds? What the fuck are you doing on this website anyway?

The amount of detail this guy gets into proves he has no life.

He's looked into this what he even admitted he doesn't know what the original intent of the first Tron was and is mad that Tron 2 isn't what he thinks it should be. This is the main problem with most of the people that come to this site. They are so extremely hypercritical and get mad at the creators of these properties to do whatever they want or go wherever they want with a script. Perfect example, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, a perfectly fine summer popcorn movie. It had it's problems but it also had alot of what made the other movies work. And the problems people had with it weren't much different than problems with the other 2 sequels. However, some of these super-sensitive mega-nerds here were so outraged with it that they didn't let themselves enjoy it because it didn't play out exactly the way they thought it should. He's so invested in this playing out the way that he wanted it that his review turned out to be an entire waste of time. His tastes for what this movie should be is soooo specific to him that it's irrelevant to anyone but him. At least with Harry, he gives you all sorts of set up and you don't have to agree with his reviews to find out if you'll like the movie, too. But seriously, do you think any woman would date a guy who cares so much about a almost forgotten sci-fi movie from almost 30 years ago?

    Almost forgotten?

    by orcus

Tron like Blade Runner of the same year pretty much set the standard of the look and feel of a lot genre movies which still reverberate today. Granted it's not everybody's cup of tea but you cannot deny it's impact. Hardly forgotten indeed.

    The problem with sequels

    by FuzzyLumpkins

is that they try to tell the best story for the first movie and, unless they fail, anything after that is a letdown.

    I don't care as long....

...as it has two gorgeous guys (Garrett Hedlund and Karl Urban) and the music of Daft Punk. Besides, I didn't think the original was so great. (BTW, in "Kingdom Hearts 2", they find out Tron is ticklish. Hee hee.)

Again. What is life in the 21st century? What else is it but another fucking complicated waste of time? What is YOUR definition of life and how do you get one? It must be really fucking cool or something. I mean, everyone I know that claims they HAVE a life sound fucking misserable. All the "nerds" I know are prepetually happy. hmmmm.....

    to follow up...

He stated many times how he'd excuse the flaws if the movie was still good enough. His thong IS NOT in a bunch.
