Bill Nighy (Not The Science Guy) In HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS!!

Published at:  Jul 02, 2009 9:25:37 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Murmurings of this started percolating a few weeks ago on various HARRY POTTER-related boards (I believe it may've originated HERE - forgive me if I'm wrong).

But now, the ultra-magnificent Bill Nighy has confirmed he's landed a gig in the final HARRY POTTER FILM (DEATHLY HALLOWS) - the first part of which should hit theaters late next year.

I don't think I'm allowed to say it but I'm going to be in the next Harry Potter film," he tells us. "I won't say which character, but he's a goodie. I just got the gig."

...said Nighy to The Independent during THIS brief discussion.

Speculation abounds as to who he'll play in the movie franchise's two part finale - one not-so-unreasonable conjecture is that he may be Rufus Scrimgeour. SOunds like a character who could be related to BORAT.

More as more is known.

i always pictured him (and think i remember him described as) a someone big and strong, almost resembling a lion. I always pictured someone like brian cox for some reason.

    i think it's a better guess that he's luna's dad or something.

We knew this in the UK for certain at least a week ago. That said.... ABOUT FUCKING TIME he got a part in the Harry Potter films!! He'd make a good Scrimgeour. I'm a little worried about the HBP film however. It seems they've royally fucked it it but if it plays well as the first part of a three film arc then I'll forgive any short comings it may have.

    by performingmonkey

He dies 'offscreen' fairly early in the book but they could always just not kill him off. Though is Scrimgeour really a 'goodie'? Rhys Ifans is playing Xenophilius Lovegood and just about every other role has been cast, including the young Dumbledore and Grindelwald, also Aberforth who Nighy maybe could have suited. I don't know who else he could play because everyone else is evil!

There are a number of characters from the book that Nighy could play. He could play Xenophilius Lovegood, Aberforth, the owner of the Hog's Head; one of the Ministry people who are impersonated; or Amycus Carrow, the DADA professor. Or he could play a random Death Eater. Also, if John Hurt does not return, he could play Ollivander.

I think those are more likely than Scrimgeour, who played as significant role in book six, but barely appeared in books seven.

    About the music score...

    by mr gorilla

OK - it's not Williams. But while Williams' score for AZKABAN is utterly brilliant, the first two are quite sickly sweet in places, bringing back unwelcome memories of HOOK. I loved the way GOBLET's score was often reminiscent of Hammer Horrors. And I think the tunes of the ORDER score really DO get under your skin. It's just that the orchestration is a bit bare - especially during the action sequences. (I actually think the comedy cues are great.) BRING BACK WILLIAMS, in fact, but only for the very last one. Oh, go on!

    by d.vader

Always thought he should be playing Voldemort's grandfather Marvolo Gaunt in the flashbacks for this film. He might work out as Scrimgeour, but WHY would Scrimgeour be in the movies? Especially since they've cut him out completely from this film? What's the point of putting him in Deathly Hallows when he's going to be almost immediately killed off? If this is the case, its very poor planning on the part of the producers. Surprise, surprise.

    Reply to Talkback

  • I say that because A. IMDB had all the wrong voice actors listed for Transformers 2 as late as last week, and B. I doubt the producers of the Potter films even considered putting Ollivander into the film, as they're not concerned with keeping the details like that to enrich the Potter universe. These are the same producers that (supposedly) have Luna Lovegood able to see Harry under his Invisibility Cloak with her x-ray specs in Half-Blood Prince, and have that curious image of what looks like Harry holding Dumbledore's wand after he's been killed. Anyone who's read the final book knows just how wrong wrong wrong those two ideas are.

If that's true, that's interesting. He's definitely not anyone I ever considered the role, and not how I pictured the man (I'm sure they'll use lots of makeup). I always kinda pictures Aberforth like Wilford Brimley in "The Thing", just with a short beard.

A new idea - he could be a centaur

    by performingmonkey

They were gonna have actual centaur characters in the Order of the Phoenix movie until fuck knows what happened and suddenly the decided they wanted to make a 2 hour movie out of a 900 page book when they already made 2hr30min ones out of 300 page books. Now the last book is two movies there's room for them to include the centaurs and have them fight in the final battle. Nighy could be the lead one, Bane, or Firenze, even though he was played by someone different in the first movie. It's gonna be Scrimgeour though. Prisoner of Azkaban is still the best. It's the one that feels like a MOVIE rather than something patched together trying to be the book and failing miserably. The kids were already acting rather well and naturally in Prisoner thanks to Alfonso Cuaron. They didn't need to be told to ACT act in Order. Cuaron created the perfect atmosphere. Now the movies feel somewhat lazy, even if the directors are working their asses off. Half-Blood Prince DOES look the best since Prisoner so we shall see.

Aberforth! It's the only major role that ain't cast

    by tall_boy66

Unless they're gonna go with the Random Guy who played the Bartender in whatever HP movie he popped up in, but I don't think they'll stick that tightly to the series continuity for a previously throwaway role that suddenly becomes important only at the very end.

...I believe, shows a couple of the characters above as already being cast. Crazy how many new characters will be in the last film(s), though. I actually thought a couple of them would have been introduced in Half-Blood, but evidently not.

    Dumbledore!!!

    by lordgrimplemort

I don't really see him as Dumbledore, but I wish they had gotten SOMEBODY else to play him. Gambon's great as a scary mob boss or something, but he sucks as Dumbledore. And they should have changed directors, too. OOTP was the weakest movie so far, I think and though I hope I'm wrong, I get the feeling HBP will be a letdown as well. Sounds like they cut a lot from it.

  • But then you'd be giving the producers too much credit. These are, after all, the same people who've decided Dobby wasn't important enough to include as a minor character. That is, until, the final book proved them wrong.

    hey D, Vader

    by mr gorilla

you seem to be bang into this stuff... wd love to know which your favourite films so far are... Mine, BTW, are Prisoner/Goblet in a first place tie, with Order of Phoenix next, then Philosopher's Stone, and finally Chamber, which I don't really like at all apart from Branagh. This next film is, therefore, crucial - if it's really good then anticipation for the final two will go up up up, if not, then I'll start to be a bit less interested.

Reminds me of this Potter book rollout I accidentally stumbled on, where you had all these cute little brats wandering around with their school uniforms and glasses bumping up against these fugly gothster hags and their scrawny boyfriends, there for the same event. Weird fucking scene.

    by grammaton cleric binks

He plays badass, he plays goofball. He can do everything. I still think my favorite is his role in Love Actually. Then to see him play that cold stuff in The Constant Gardener... they guy can play opposite ends of the spectrum in the blink of an eye.

    by brandloyalist

That's where I found SNAKE PLISSKEN (1984), the awesome FOUNDATION series Sci-Fi produced, all of those experimental nude art films Scarlett Johansson made, etc.

STRANGE FRUIT? What the hell are you talking about ZombieHeathLedger? I can't find any such movie in Nighy's entry or under that title. Damn you for making me think that scene exists!

Fits perfectly. The only problem is that he appears in HP6, and dies in the second or third scene in HP7.

Nice addition no matter what he plays.

    by preciousroy

I could see him as Mr. Lovegood... but I would much rather see him as Rufus Scrimgeour. I can just hear some of his inflection from Underworld as he as Radcliffe, "Dumbledore's man through and through, eh?"

    Mr. Gorilla

    by d.vader

Prisoner is definitely my favorite film of the series, and its also the best. I like Goblet of Fire next. The other 3, I'm not sure about the ranking. I enjoy the first film but there are too many moments that are very cheesy and its pacing seems off. Same goes for the second film. I despised Order of the Phoenix the first time I saw it. And the second time, and the third time, etc. I absolutely loved the first half of the film and then absolutely hated the second. I don't like Yates as a director (and hate his music composer Nicholas Hooper), and so I am very worried about the next 3 films. Order of the Phoenix has grown on me, though, and when I watch it now I can look past a lot of its flaws. The Dumbledore/Voldemort fight is well done and has some epic moments, but compared to what it *could* have been? What it *should* have been? Its just shameful. And now I get all pissed off thinking about why I disliked it again!

What's with the Hermione Library Dyke look?

    by robe

I have to admit that the current director has outdone even Alfonso Cuaron. Not even he would have thought that making Hermione Granger dress like a dyke was a good idea. In a traditional school setting no girl other than a muslin or dyke would dream of wearing trousers with their uniform. Nice to see Warner Bros reaching out to the lesbian community instead of the straight male.

    by mr gorilla

I agree that Prisoner is the most wondrous. Goblet was brilliant to see in a packed cinema as it was the first one with real laughs (the ball), and (I think) real thrills (the dragon bit). And of course, the return of Voldemort made it feel that we were stepping up. Phoenix I agree not as good, especially as the general situation doesn't change that much, but I think they made the right decision in making it as taut as they could. And now it seems that Yates is really delivering with HBP.
