Bill Nighy (Not The Science Guy) In HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS!!
Merrick here...
Murmurings of this started percolating a few weeks ago on various HARRY POTTER-related boards (I believe it may've originated HERE - forgive me if I'm wrong).
But now, the ultra-magnificent Bill Nighy has confirmed he's landed a gig in the final HARRY POTTER FILM (DEATHLY HALLOWS) - the first part of which should hit theaters late next year.

I don't think I'm allowed to say it but I'm going to be in the next Harry Potter film," he tells us. "I won't say which character, but he's a goodie. I just got the gig."
...said Nighy to The Independent during THIS brief discussion.
Speculation abounds as to who he'll play in the movie franchise's two part finale - one not-so-unreasonable conjecture is that he may be Rufus Scrimgeour. SOunds like a character who could be related to BORAT.
More as more is known.

Do people still even give a shit about this crap? Who ever they have directing all the films now is fucking awful. No wonder they waited so long to let a Blimy direct it.
-
...which would be fantastic, because when I was reading the books, Bill Nighy is exactly who I pictured as that character. He's tailor made for it.
-
if you're a british actor who's been around, harry potter is bound to come a-knockin'
-
i always pictured him (and think i remember him described as) a someone big and strong, almost resembling a lion. I always pictured someone like brian cox for some reason.
i think it's a better guess that he's luna's dad or something. -
We knew this in the UK for certain at least a week ago. That said.... ABOUT FUCKING TIME he got a part in the Harry Potter films!! He'd make a good Scrimgeour. I'm a little worried about the HBP film however. It seems they've royally fucked it it but if it plays well as the first part of a three film arc then I'll forgive any short comings it may have.
-
...Scrimgeour's look and mannerisms reminded me instantly of Nighy. I'd be shocked if it weren't him.
-
...but it sure smells good!
-
...I'm not thrilled about John Williams not scoring the last few films, combined with the fact that the guy who turned in the worst HP score is doing the rest. Thrilling.
-
Rhys Ifans is playing Luna's dad.
-
I read some speculation that he wasn't playing SCrimgeour because of how early he dies in book 7. Doesn't make much sense if Nighy is signed for both movies
-
Great fun, Nighy's always a blast.
-
anticipated films of the Summer? Pretty fuckin' sad I'd say. My God has this summer sucked for fun at the movies.
-
My bet is that he's Either Gellert Grindelwald, or he's Gregorovitch, the wand maker.
-
This guy is one of the best actors working currently, and I don't know why he wasn't picked up for a role sooner.
-
You think they find some room for Tom Cruise or William Shatner. I'm tired of all these British movies without Americans in them. Who do they think they are, like world is made up of just British people.
-
He dies 'offscreen' fairly early in the book but they could always just not kill him off. Though is Scrimgeour really a 'goodie'? Rhys Ifans is playing Xenophilius Lovegood and just about every other role has been cast, including the young Dumbledore and Grindelwald, also Aberforth who Nighy maybe could have suited. I don't know who else he could play because everyone else is evil!
-
My wife made me watch that movie when it came out and I was really surprised by how good it was. The best part about it was without a doubt Bill Nighy's honest aged and washed up rock star. Fucking hilarious!!
-
Or Mr. Lovegood?
-
...have already been cast, according to IMDB. Gregorovitch is being played by the dude who was Boris the Blade, and Grindelwald is being played by the teenage dude in Sweeney Todd. It's gotta be Scrimgeour, that's about the only role yet to be cast.
-
as Ollivander? Rubbish if he didn't
-
"I'm not fifty!!" The shot of his glam rock boot blasting upward, freeing him from the ice when he drunkenly falls thru a frozen pond (clamoring for his happy pills) is a HILARIOUS one shot. Undersung comic gem of a movie.
-
...has been just fantastic w/ the exception of Umbridge, but that's only because no human looks like Umbridge. Too bad the films have been hampered by the kids' acting, too much story to squeeze in each film beyond book 3, and one awful CGI giant.
-
Looked it up myself, being lazy before. Sorry.
-
As they keep reporting that Gillian Anderson is playing The Rani in the last of the Doctor Who specials at the end of this year.
-
or Rufus as I hear they are writing a ton of characters back in that had to be removed in previous movies due to time. Since this is a 2 parter, they can reintroduce us to a good amount of fun characters.
-
There are a number of characters from the book that Nighy could play. He could play Xenophilius Lovegood, Aberforth, the owner of the Hog's Head; one of the Ministry people who are impersonated; or Amycus Carrow, the DADA professor. Or he could play a random Death Eater. Also, if John Hurt does not return, he could play Ollivander.
I think those are more likely than Scrimgeour, who played as significant role in book six, but barely appeared in books seven. -

sounds good...just saw a new clip of half blood prince and
by supercowbell5thecowbellhasspoken
it looks fucking great. i cant wait for it. looks like the best movie since poa (goblet was good too, just hated all the cuts)
-
Scrimegour is described as a lion, and I don't see that from Nighy. I've always pictured him as Aberforth. Although Xenus Lovegood would work as well.
-
It's a very good piece of casting if it is.....!! Love Bill Nighy, he plays wacky really well
-
Apart from Bond ('cos I'm on of the few who liked Quantum of Solace) and anything directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Hobbit, Hellboy). I would like to get excited about Star Wars the TV series, but then I remembered that half of the fun in Star Wars is John Williams' music. Seriously. So, what will be the big movie series of the 2010s???
-
he should play the Billy May character from Love Actually and shag Hermione. He should appear as Billy May in every movie.
-
OK - it's not Williams. But while Williams' score for AZKABAN is utterly brilliant, the first two are quite sickly sweet in places, bringing back unwelcome memories of HOOK. I loved the way GOBLET's score was often reminiscent of Hammer Horrors. And I think the tunes of the ORDER score really DO get under your skin. It's just that the orchestration is a bit bare - especially during the action sequences. (I actually think the comedy cues are great.) BRING BACK WILLIAMS, in fact, but only for the very last one. Oh, go on!

Nice Marmot, JO BRAND IS THE BOOK UMBRIDGE, TO BAD THEY DIDN'T C
by charlesthomasmathews1978
I think Imelda Staunton was perfect in Order as she was meant to be the prim and proper on the outside while being an evil facistic cunt underneath.
-
I'm not too picky, I think Williams does great work but his original score has set such a strong template I think others can play with it pretty well at this point (I happened to like Doyle's work in Goblet of Fire). So who's doing it if not Williams?
-
More Americans? It's set in England, you moron!
-
"I've got a magic wand for you"
Only Bill Nighy could pull that off in a pitch perfect pervy voice. -
Ha ha! Could you imagine? They say... YOU are... the chosen... one.
-
was in the last movie, for about five seconds. imdb doesn't have the actor who played him listed
-
Never heard of Jo Brand, but I just looked up some pics and she sure as hell LOOKS close to how I pictured Umbridge. Also, you user name is too damn long and when the first thing you type in your heading disappears, you've run out of room and getting cut off.
-
...which I know they won't since Yates is already shooting the final film, but still. Alfonso Cuaron made hands down not only the best Potter film, but a really great stand alone family fantasy adventure film.
-
It was confirmed months ago that Rhys Ifans landed that part.

Watched Shaun of the Dead last night for the 10th time
by doctorzoidberg

Michael Gambon played him already in Order of the Phoenix (it was a short moment, but he's in there... with the sound of a goat in the background), so he'd almost certainly do the rest of them.
-
He's awesome. It'd be a good show with him on board.
Instead it's gonna be some kid. -
And it's also perfect. He was Hugh Grant's roomate in Notting Hill.
-
bless them all day long!
-
Dumbledore's brother is one of the only good guys who is revealed in the book 7, who else could it be. Seriously, imagine him with the long hair and beard and it reallly couldn't be anyone else. This is awesome news.
-
Read my post again. If you can't figure out that it was sarcasm, there is something wrong with you. William Shatner is Canadian, idiot. I was mocking people who always complain about the same thing about American movies. Crawl out from under that blarney stone you have been living under.
-
this was dream casting a while back. Considering the tone of the character in Deathly Hallows (and how awesome Nighy is - and how much more like Richard Harris he is), it makes me wish we could go back in time and cast Nighy as Dumbledore and Gambon as Aberforth.
-
I really shouldn't take the time *sigh* but here we go. 1) I don't think the tired "does anyone still give a shit about this crap" even applies to the Potter movies they are consistently well reviewed and gross a large sum of money. Money does not equate quality, I'm just pointing out "someone does care about this "Shit" 2) If you're gonig to be ignorant try to get the slur right, It's Limey not Blimey. You're a wonderful human being keep up the good work. LOL.
-
You know you love it. 13!!!!!
-
...too bad Cirian Hinds has already been cast in that role. It's Scrimgeour. Has to be.
-
Fenrir Greyback, Rufus and Aberforth all seem like likely candidates. He has such a dynamic range as an actor that he can do just about anything. Look at his work in the Underworld movies and contrast it with Shaun of the Dead. He really is an amazing performer.
-
Clitoro Engorgum!!
-
Should replace Daniel Radcliff...And Ron should be played by Jason Statham. Or the other way around, I'm flexible people.
-
only appears on quality entertainment like Stargate!! Harry Potter = Speed Racer = Tween entertainment...
-
gay.
-
is all i'm gonna say.
-
Nighy's Davy Jones is the second best screen villain of this decade. Just to have Nighy's mere presence in a film(s?) where Fienne's Voldemort will finally slay the impudent bastard Harry Potter, this is a dream come true!
-
Are you not even bothering to look at the confirmed casting before saying shit like "Lovegood. Has to be!" Nighy is playing Harry's gay dad's lover. "Has to be!"
-
It's wierd..
-
His movie was easily the best in the series...the cut out bits have been pretty obvious in the other movies, and Columbus mishandled the first two (still good movies but not as good as they could have been)
-
How the fuck they manage to pull this one off without totally killing this movie is beyond me.
-
He'll be in HBP opening this month actually.
-
Mundungus Fletcher
-
Peeves!
Potty loves Looney, Potty loves Looney! -
Always thought he should be playing Voldemort's grandfather Marvolo Gaunt in the flashbacks for this film. He might work out as Scrimgeour, but WHY would Scrimgeour be in the movies? Especially since they've cut him out completely from this film? What's the point of putting him in Deathly Hallows when he's going to be almost immediately killed off? If this is the case, its very poor planning on the part of the producers. Surprise, surprise.
-
Grindelwald makes much more sense than Scrimgeour...

You can't trust IMDB, John Hurt might NOT be in DeathlyHallows
by d.vader
I say that because A. IMDB had all the wrong voice actors listed for Transformers 2 as late as last week, and B. I doubt the producers of the Potter films even considered putting Ollivander into the film, as they're not concerned with keeping the details like that to enrich the Potter universe. These are the same producers that (supposedly) have Luna Lovegood able to see Harry under his Invisibility Cloak with her x-ray specs in Half-Blood Prince, and have that curious image of what looks like Harry holding Dumbledore's wand after he's been killed. Anyone who's read the final book knows just how wrong wrong wrong those two ideas are.
-
If that's true, that's interesting. He's definitely not anyone I ever considered the role, and not how I pictured the man (I'm sure they'll use lots of makeup). I always kinda pictures Aberforth like Wilford Brimley in "The Thing", just with a short beard.
-
Sorry to anyone that doesn't know... skip my above posts.

They were gonna have actual centaur characters in the Order of the Phoenix movie until fuck knows what happened and suddenly the decided they wanted to make a 2 hour movie out of a 900 page book when they already made 2hr30min ones out of 300 page books. Now the last book is two movies there's room for them to include the centaurs and have them fight in the final battle. Nighy could be the lead one, Bane, or Firenze, even though he was played by someone different in the first movie. It's gonna be Scrimgeour though. Prisoner of Azkaban is still the best. It's the one that feels like a MOVIE rather than something patched together trying to be the book and failing miserably. The kids were already acting rather well and naturally in Prisoner thanks to Alfonso Cuaron. They didn't need to be told to ACT act in Order. Cuaron created the perfect atmosphere. Now the movies feel somewhat lazy, even if the directors are working their asses off. Half-Blood Prince DOES look the best since Prisoner so we shall see.
-
Must google that. And Peeves was cast by Rik Mayhal but all his stuff got cut. ALL of it. Isn't that a pisser? Still haven't forgiven them for it.
-
They did an INCREDIBLE job for her last year!
-
According to snitchseeker[dot]com.
-
...I'll watch em...on video...
-
Unless they're gonna go with the Random Guy who played the Bartender in whatever HP movie he popped up in, but I don't think they'll stick that tightly to the series continuity for a previously throwaway role that suddenly becomes important only at the very end.
-

Will this one be 4 hours long and have no ending, too?
by lockesbrokenleg
-
...I believe, shows a couple of the characters above as already being cast. Crazy how many new characters will be in the last film(s), though. I actually thought a couple of them would have been introduced in Half-Blood, but evidently not.
-
Wasn't it mentioned long ago that Williams will return for the last movie(s)?
-
I don't really see him as Dumbledore, but I wish they had gotten SOMEBODY else to play him. Gambon's great as a scary mob boss or something, but he sucks as Dumbledore. And they should have changed directors, too. OOTP was the weakest movie so far, I think and though I hope I'm wrong, I get the feeling HBP will be a letdown as well. Sounds like they cut a lot from it.
-

You'd think they'd introduce characters in Half-Blood Prince...
by d.vader
But then you'd be giving the producers too much credit. These are, after all, the same people who've decided Dobby wasn't important enough to include as a minor character. That is, until, the final book proved them wrong.
-
you seem to be bang into this stuff... wd love to know which your favourite films so far are... Mine, BTW, are Prisoner/Goblet in a first place tie, with Order of Phoenix next, then Philosopher's Stone, and finally Chamber, which I don't really like at all apart from Branagh. This next film is, therefore, crucial - if it's really good then anticipation for the final two will go up up up, if not, then I'll start to be a bit less interested.
-
Cuaron had them have nice wild hair, Newell had them looking like hippy kids, which was great I thought, but these last two make harry look totally dweeby. what are they thinking of?
-
Ha, ha...you're a bunch of adults reading kiddie books.
Reminds me of this Potter book rollout I accidentally stumbled on, where you had all these cute little brats wandering around with their school uniforms and glasses bumping up against these fugly gothster hags and their scrawny boyfriends, there for the same event. Weird fucking scene. -
He plays badass, he plays goofball. He can do everything. I still think my favorite is his role in Love Actually. Then to see him play that cold stuff in The Constant Gardener... they guy can play opposite ends of the spectrum in the blink of an eye.
-
That's where I found SNAKE PLISSKEN (1984), the awesome FOUNDATION series Sci-Fi produced, all of those experimental nude art films Scarlett Johansson made, etc.
STRANGE FRUIT? What the hell are you talking about ZombieHeathLedger? I can't find any such movie in Nighy's entry or under that title. Damn you for making me think that scene exists! -
Fits perfectly. The only problem is that he appears in HP6, and dies in the second or third scene in HP7.
-
I could see him as Mr. Lovegood... but I would much rather see him as Rufus Scrimgeour. I can just hear some of his inflection from Underworld as he as Radcliffe, "Dumbledore's man through and through, eh?"
-
STILL CRAZY - the band was called Strange Fruit. Ok then.
-
He'll have the same condition as Benjamin Button.
-
Hasn't anyone noticed that there are NO Americans in Harry Potter at all?
Oh and who is 'the science guy'? -
It's basically Nye, with a little lift at the end.
/naɪˈi:/ -
Thank God neither of the two boys is particularly hairy.
-
...it's taken bloody ages to come out! Nearly here now, though!
-
what if he contaminated the whole movie?
-
Prisoner is definitely my favorite film of the series, and its also the best. I like Goblet of Fire next. The other 3, I'm not sure about the ranking. I enjoy the first film but there are too many moments that are very cheesy and its pacing seems off. Same goes for the second film. I despised Order of the Phoenix the first time I saw it. And the second time, and the third time, etc. I absolutely loved the first half of the film and then absolutely hated the second. I don't like Yates as a director (and hate his music composer Nicholas Hooper), and so I am very worried about the next 3 films. Order of the Phoenix has grown on me, though, and when I watch it now I can look past a lot of its flaws. The Dumbledore/Voldemort fight is well done and has some epic moments, but compared to what it *could* have been? What it *should* have been? Its just shameful. And now I get all pissed off thinking about why I disliked it again!
-
I have to admit that the current director has outdone even Alfonso Cuaron. Not even he would have thought that making Hermione Granger dress like a dyke was a good idea. In a traditional school setting no girl other than a muslin or dyke would dream of wearing trousers with their uniform. Nice to see Warner Bros reaching out to the lesbian community instead of the straight male.
-
Hasn't every single British actor been in a HP movie?
-
has to play Luna Lovegood's father...he would be in HBP too if he was playing another characture...
-
I agree that Prisoner is the most wondrous. Goblet was brilliant to see in a packed cinema as it was the first one with real laughs (the ball), and (I think) real thrills (the dragon bit). And of course, the return of Voldemort made it feel that we were stepping up. Phoenix I agree not as good, especially as the general situation doesn't change that much, but I think they made the right decision in making it as taut as they could. And now it seems that Yates is really delivering with HBP.
-
Probably nobody still watching this particular talkback, but just saw it on a Potter forum that Nighy indeed confirmed he's playing Rufus Scrimgeour.
