Mark Romanek posts a glimpse of Spike doing effects direction on WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE!!!!

Published at:  Jul 01, 2009 1:52:23 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with a micro glimpse of just how intense Spike is with his attention to detail. One of the things I really like is that he's doing this against a projected image - instead of a small computer screen. I think sometimes detail can be overlooked on monitors - whereas when you see the image being projected against a screen - you can begin to see how it'll look later on film - and make the right adjustments. Like I said, the link below doesn't offer much - but it shows us 1) Mark Romanek is a geek! 2) Spike is getting it done! and 3) WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE is coming soon... but not soon enough!!!

How does Spike Jones feel about the use of the song that he helped make great, Sabatoge, used in the new Star Trek movie as a possible in joke about how one William Shatner pronounced the word Sabotage? Also how does he feel about how it fits in with the continuity?

    SPIKE JONZE IS A GENIUS

    by fassbinder79

That's really not up for debate. Even though he's only made a handful of feature films his body of work (i.e. music videos, commercials, skate videos etc) are absolutely astonishing. He's arguably the most talented young director in Hollywood. Flame on haters. But Spike is the best of the best. I would love to see Spike do something in Imax. I think it would be really stunning. You're the man, Spike. Don't change a thing about what you do and I hope the studio leaves WTWTA the fuck alone. Let the guy do whatever he wants. Seriously. He's one of the last true artists in cinema. His Gap ad is better than most feature films.

    by dennismm

who thinks this whole movie would be better left unmade? A 20-minute animated short of "Where the Wild Things Are" would capture the spirit of the book. This thing is going to be filled with extraneous action and human drama outside the land of the wild things. We don't need that, no matter how talented Jonze is and no matter if Sendak gave his blessing.

NO I stand with Harry on this, without Ratnerek the movie will suck. He is a proven vital ingrediant when making the perfect movie, as he has shown us in One Hour Photo, the man is a gift from Allah and should be treated as such.

My prediction is Jonze will show off how much of a bad ass he is by the fact that he is capable of extending the story to a 2 hr film that works beautifully. What amazes me about SJ (not even having seen the film yet) is that the trailer alone is powerful. Very few filmmakers are that good that the trailer is better than most films. There are shots in that trailer with AF's "Wake Up" playing that make me want to cry. Fucking amazing! The shot when Keener hugs Max is simply dynamite. The way Jonze cut the shot of Max falling through the snow. Come on, man this thing is going to be AMAZING!!!! Where The Wild Things Are is the only film other than Avatar and Book Of Eli that has my attention at this point. The rest are just ass crack filler for the main events.

The shatner Sabatoge thing. I don't know how true it is, but I guess there is an episode of Star Trek where he has to say sabotage, but said it weird. The director told him to say it correctly and he was like like NO I will say it like I want to. Sort of a I'm right your wrong thing. I have no idea if their is any truth behind it or not.

I didn't like One Hour Photo. But there is on question that Romanek is talented. I'll give you that. Jonze is a gift from God though. I'll tell you what I'd like to see...Romanek doing Evangelion. He's probably the only director who could pull it off. Del Toro looks amazing from the clips I've seen so one way or the other I think its going to be solid popcorn entertainment. One of the best pieces I've seen on AICN was the interview with Rick Baker talking about how much CGI effect have destroyed Hollywood. He's right. But the poor quality trailer I saw for Johnston's looked like the werewolf version of Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula and for my money that's not such a bad thing.

I don't really care about Romanek, sure he's fine. I was just making fun of the rampage Harry went on when he found out that Romanek left the project. He was acting like Romanek was the greatest director ever, and he's only made 2 films which were ok nothing amazing. He was making a big stink. I mean maybe in time Romanek will be good, but imagine someone being mad about David Fincher leaving a project right after he made Alien 3, you wouldn't give a shit would you. NOW you could be upset (though not really since its AICN tradition now to say David Fincher is attached to every single movie ever made the second news comes out that they are making it) if Fincher left a movie right before they started filming. But Romanek, lets let him get a couple more films under his belt before we throw teper tantrums about his work choice. Also I'd rather see a fun entertaining movie that Jojo is capable of making then some boring thing which is all I've seen from Romanek.

Gotcha. While I didn't like OHP I think Romanek's talent has been shown through the music videos he's directed. Not all of them good mind you but some of them are truly incredible. I mean few people will ever (if ever) top the Cash Hurt video. So I would disagree with your Fincher comment from the point of view that DF had only made a handful of videos (i.e. The Wallflowers) before Alien 3 so I don't think that's a fair comparison. Romanek has been working for A LONG TIME and he's earned some cred as far as I'm concerned. To cut Harry some slack if he's in any way like me and loves a good werewolf movie (and there are really only two good ones in my opinion - Landis' and Dante's The Howling - An American Werewolf is one of the best films I've ever seen...Its like Bunuel for 13 years olds and that is AWESOME) he was probably feeling like shit we could have had this stylish director with taste revisit the Wolf Man but instead we're getting the guy who did Hidalgo and Jurassic Park 3. My feeling is Johnston deserves a chance because The Rocketeer is one of the best comic book films ever made. And October Sky was pretty good too. Most of Johnston's films haven't been good but he clearly seems to be one of those studio hired hands that can actually crank out some truly entertaining theater.

MAN IN SUIT!!!! MAN IN SUIT!!!!!

    by feralangel

Christ, I'm the first to mention this? This site has really gone downhill. Anyway, we'll see if audiences are really ready to watch some dude in a giant Muppet fur suit impersonate a classic children's book character. I'm all for it myself. It's really funny when the man in the suit runs through the woods and the giant high-tech animatronic head he's wearing wobbles around, thus killing the illusion of life. Now that's comedy. Could make a killer drinking game too. Just rent the Wild Things DVD, throw a party, play the movie, and at the first sight of GIANT FURRY HEAD WOBBLE, take a shot. Instant drunken orgy. And a far better time to be had than actually going to see this pile of dung at the movie theater. Epic win. It's all golden.

That's a cool story Fatty. Can I call you Fatty? ;)

Fassbinder, yeah Hurt is so good I still forget it's a Trent Reznor song. But as to Fincher only doing a handful of videos and brushing it off with The Wallflowers, come on. He'd done videos for Sting, Roy Orbison, Aerosmith, George Michael and 3 for Madonna (I counted 47 videos in all by 1990) before Alien 3 (and only 6 since). And you say Spike is "young"?! Lousy batting average there dude. Although it does make me feel better about my own age...

And "Rick Baker talking about how much CGI effect have destroyed Hollywood"?! Uh, O.K., point me to the interview where he said that. Baker has ALWAYS maintained that practical/prosthetic makeup is an ADDITIVE process. CG can be reductive. He pushed makeup into the technical realm with animatronic effects (concurrently with others), and did the same with CG (just another technical tool) way back with The Frighteners, and recently with Benjamin Button. Check your stuff dude.

At first I thought they'd substituted a pic of Romanek by mistake it was so uncanny. Then I saw another photo of him without a beard and smiling and he looked a LOT more like his famous dad!
