Denzel and Tony Scott's next pairing in trouble?

Published at:  Jun 30, 2009 5:55:13 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The obvious headline for this movie is UNSTOPPABLE stopped? but I refuse to play their cute little game! Plus someone else already beat me to it.

I saw PELHAM and didn't hate it. How's that for a ringing endorsement? But I genuinely liked MAN ON FIRE and I like seeing Denzel Washington and Tony Scott working together. The Hollywood Reporter says their next collaboration, a runaway train flick called UNSTOPPABLE co-starring Captain Kirk (Pine, not Shatner, but how sweet would that be?) might have hit a few budgetary snags at Fox, which put the whole project in jeopardy.

Sounds like the perfect kind of movie for those guys to do, personally, but all I'm going on is the concept and the talent attached. However, I'm sure if Fox is having second thoughts then it must be a really strong project.

What do you folks think?

I've just realised how weird it is that I hate Bay's movies, but I'm usually interested in seeing Scott's.

Both make mindless, braindead, over-the-top action movies. They should be the same. But the difference is, Scott's usually good at it.

    by brokentusk

What this really means: Fox wanted the film to be shot at half the budget that would allow it to actually live up to its premise.

Rothman: "Do we really need all these good bits? Can't we just get rid of all the stuff that people want to see and just make it mediocre at half the price?"

Actually, it's about Soul Asylum's "Runaway Train."

    by mcvamp

Denzel plays a good ex-cop with an incident in his past that ruined his reputation even though he was not at fault. He's hired as the bodyguard the lead singer of Soul Asylum (played by Chris Pine) who has been targeted by Syrian extremists. He will be stoic, well-spoken, curse only when dramatically appropriate, slyly joking at unexpected times, and have a chaste, nostalgic relationship with his ex-wife I wish Denzel would do more challenging stuff. Maybe it's just not being sent to him any more.

He's an earnest actor but he always does varying degrees of the same character. He was different in one movie, GLORY, and he was awesome in it and then he just became the same guy in ever project. Even Eddie Murphy has more range than Denzel.

    Sounds like Speed 3

    by obidawsn

First a bus that will explode below 55 MPH, then a runaway cruise ship. This would make the perfect plot for Speed 3. But, then again, who would watch it? The first movie was pretty fun, but the 2nd one was a joke. Maybe JJ Abrams can take this train idea and turn that franchise around, too. Maybe all the people on the train have a connected past, which we can see through flashbacks everytime the train enters a tunnel. Then when the train reaches a certain speed (say 88 MPH :) ) it goes back in time, so we can see how the train came to be.

RUNAWAY TRAIN was funky (like a train).
MAN ON FIRE was fucking cool too, except for the limp climax where Dezel dies and the kidnapper gets shot in a weak-ass 'tie up the loose ends' moment by the detective. The alternate ending on the DVD was SOOO much better. Denzel blowing himself with the bomb up the ass and taking out the kidnapper's mansion. Now that's a 'man on fire'.

    by captain happy

I hope Denzel is freed from the yoke of having to work with such a hack so he can go on & do good work. Tony Scott does not understand how to cut suspense or action. Look at Deja Vu & Domino. The man is an over-editing fanatic, & I'm an editor (which probably gives me about 10% credibility because I've only worked in television & in that time I've worked on real crap ...but hey, we're not talking about me, we're talking about him). Tony Scott is a director that just gets under my skin because he is so bad & his direction & editing-style are often antithetical to what I feel are the hallmarks of good moviemaking; which to me is being emotionally immersed in a good story. All of his frame-tinting (w/ gels or in post, I don't care) pulls me out of the experience of the film, as does his fast, jarring editing style. Why would anyone want to make reality look unreal the way Tony Scott does? & then dice it into tiny pieces? It's a mystery to me. He also uses lots of valuable Hollywood assets that would be better spent elsewhere. This is why Tony Scott is a prick.

STOP MAKING TONY SCOTT MOVIES, DENZEL!

    by tall_boy66

Ridley Scott is obviously the better brother and it paid off in American Gangster (if no real awards, but fuck the Oscars anyway). Denzel was good in Phelam, and I thought Travolta was hilariously awesomely over the top, but it was directed way too "busy". Michael Bay busy works for Transformers because the entire concept is just outright silly so you can get over the top stupid, but Phelam was a small character drama, and too much whiz-bang spin the camera around Denzel's head about 20 times in the movie kinda kills it.
