Denzel and Tony Scott's next pairing in trouble?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The obvious headline for this movie is UNSTOPPABLE stopped? but I refuse to play their cute little game! Plus someone else already beat me to it.
I saw PELHAM and didn't hate it. How's that for a ringing endorsement? But I genuinely liked MAN ON FIRE and I like seeing Denzel Washington and Tony Scott working together. The Hollywood Reporter says their next collaboration, a runaway train flick called UNSTOPPABLE co-starring Captain Kirk (Pine, not Shatner, but how sweet would that be?) might have hit a few budgetary snags at Fox, which put the whole project in jeopardy.
Sounds like the perfect kind of movie for those guys to do, personally, but all I'm going on is the concept and the talent attached. However, I'm sure if Fox is having second thoughts then it must be a really strong project.
What do you folks think?

Poop.

Does anybody remember "Runaway Train" from 1985 or so? It was based on a Kurosawa screenplay, directed by Andrei Konchalovsky?

And WHY is the TV-on-DVD Hercvault closed to posting?

He's been pulling this bullshit for at least the last month. Why?

Script Girl is pretty.
-
by these guys...as that is a film that honestly COULD be re-imagined, and done fucking well too. Not that the original isn't the definition of cool (as it is)... just that it could be done differently and well. How many remakes can that be said of?
-
It's about time we get to see Denzel bonk someone in the melon again.
-
It is time
-
But the ending would have been better if he'd used one of those ass bombs on himself and blown up the kidnappers once he was in the car with them.
-
I've just realised how weird it is that I hate Bay's movies, but I'm usually interested in seeing Scott's.
Both make mindless, braindead, over-the-top action movies. They should be the same. But the difference is, Scott's usually good at it.
-
How has this not happened?
-
What this really means: Fox wanted the film to be shot at half the budget that would allow it to actually live up to its premise.
Rothman: "Do we really need all these good bits? Can't we just get rid of all the stuff that people want to see and just make it mediocre at half the price?" -
You going faggot on me?
-
Now that I see it doesn't, I'm really not sure how to feel.
-
With Jan de Bont directing? I could be mistaken.
-
That was funny.

Why are you scared of women NeilF?
by guy who got a headache and accidentally
-
...But he directs like a FUCKING meth-addicted kid whose soul is haunted by the ghost of Michael Bay. Yo, Tony, hop off the HACK-TRAIN, Fuck off to the south of France with your brother Ridley and start making SOME QUALITY pics. Do it now Tony - or I'll tear your FUCKING HEART OUT!!!
-
I'm guessing his character in this meets a tragic end as well.
-
train related movie
-
For Denzel and Scott- the only description you give is that its about a runaway train. If you know more about the movie that is- if you don't then I think you're a funny man who makes really crazy statements based on slivers of information. Good day, sir!
-
Denzel plays a good ex-cop with an incident in his past that ruined his reputation even though he was not at fault. He's hired as the bodyguard the lead singer of Soul Asylum (played by Chris Pine) who has been targeted by Syrian extremists. He will be stoic, well-spoken, curse only when dramatically appropriate, slyly joking at unexpected times, and have a chaste, nostalgic relationship with his ex-wife I wish Denzel would do more challenging stuff. Maybe it's just not being sent to him any more.
-
Because it sounds exactly the same.
-
I remember hearing that the original villains in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK were Arabs, no Nazis and the US Govt asked Spielberg to switch the villains out because the Iran Hostage crisis was still going on. So, maybe we'll be seeing a movie about a runaway Nazi instead...
-
...but it sure smells good!
-
He's an earnest actor but he always does varying degrees of the same character. He was different in one movie, GLORY, and he was awesome in it and then he just became the same guy in ever project. Even Eddie Murphy has more range than Denzel.
-
C'mon, I know why Fox balked at this one, it's a jaded concept for one and
god knows there are better stories to be told for a fraction of Scott's over inflated budgets. Seems to be a relentless procession of uninspired formulaic crap coming out of Fox at the moment, they really need to shake things up and axe some of those suits. -
Runaway train, never comin' back...
-
AH AH AH AH ITS NO LIE
AH AH AH AH ITS NO LIE
*everybody dancing* -
...have said this sounds exactly the same as Under Siege 2. How exactly? Under Siege 2 isn't about a runaway train it's about a terrorist blackmailing the United States government from onboard a fully functioning non-runaway train. You know what is about a runaway train? Runaway Train.
-
...life is too short for new Tony Scott movies.
-
Had any effect on The Taking Pelham's BO returns?
-
did ANYBOY see his last few films? or like them?
-
That woman survived the titanic sinking!
-
Also, not sure if you remember, Tony Scott jumped James Brown over a moving, exploding train in his BMW commercial. Yeah.. train movie.. fuck, let's do another. Everyone involved, just walk away. Take a weekend and come up with an idea, for once.
-
I know AICN isn't know too much for censoring the talkback but why don't block douchebags like NielF?!? If you hate scriptgirl so much you you can always go somewhere else.
-
He was mouthy runwaway slave who couldn't wait to escape from the Plantation. He was also the same way in the Inside Man. Oh he really hated whitey in Crimson tide too. NOT!!! Please STFU with the Denzel acts the same. You can say that about every actor, since it's them who's actually acting the part.
-
Never thought I'd be saying this, but one look at any footage from Pehlam 123 and I am bored out of my mind. 3/4 of Tony's movies have looked the same for the past twenty years, going back to Top Gun.
-
time for him to go the morgan freeman route

Denzel, good actor, not past his prime, needs to get away from T
by hollywoodhellraiser
Its clear Tony Scott NEEDS Denzel!
-
Spam. Spam spammity spam.
-
...Or that they at least work on another project together. I'd really like to see Denzel play a bad guy in a Tony Scott film. That would be different for them.
-
...Denzel is the BEST actor working today. PERIOD. That's not up for debate. And I don't care what any of you have to say about that.
-
I think his name should resemble his movie subtitles.
-
I suspect your intelligence is only matched by your spelling... Dear God! You couldn't even manage to cut'n'paste my name, so even spelt that wrong! Stunning!
Another SG fan shows their true colors? ;) -
Denzel needs a break from ShakeyCam Tony. Enough is enough. Get a serious role, one that requires acting for more than 2 seconds at a time. Fuck!
Chris Pine is great. I'm glad this is falling through so he can concentrate on being Captain Kirk. William Shatwho? -
Denzel really is fantastic. Sure, the movie lacked a certain verve that the material demanded, but watching Denzel do his thing was fucking mesmerizing. It does seem like he only works with Spike and the Scott Bros. lately, but I think he deserves a blockbuster at this point in his career. How about the black Indiana Jones?
-
...was called...wait for it..."Runaway Train"! Yeah, that's right! Jon Voight & Eric Roberts. One of the fucking most awesome little known gems ever! If you have not seen this movie, check it the fuck out now. C'mon, who's seen it? If I'm lyin' I'm dyin'! Here endeth the lesson.

Travolta was so scary, and totally not gay at all in Pelham.
by azultool
Oooh, menacing John Travolta. He has crazy sideburns, and tribal tats. Please, folks. If you haven't seen the original with the great Walter Matthau, do yourself a favor and check it out. It was made during a time when American cinema was, get this, original. Plus, you can't go wrong with anything featuring Matthew Broderick's dad.
-
I thought we wuz friends ...
RT is classic. No doubt. They don't make 'em like that anymore. A steady cam on a runaway train? God forbid. -

"Doesn't Denzel's characters die in every one of his movies?"
by kevin_costners_recycled_piss
I don't remember him dying in Philidelphia, unless there was a deleted scene where he gets raped by Tom Hanks.
-
First a bus that will explode below 55 MPH, then a runaway cruise ship. This would make the perfect plot for Speed 3. But, then again, who would watch it? The first movie was pretty fun, but the 2nd one was a joke. Maybe JJ Abrams can take this train idea and turn that franchise around, too. Maybe all the people on the train have a connected past, which we can see through flashbacks everytime the train enters a tunnel. Then when the train reaches a certain speed (say 88 MPH :) ) it goes back in time, so we can see how the train came to be.
-
"I wun't dat Manny. I wun't dat."
RUNAWAY TRAIN was funky (like a train).
MAN ON FIRE was fucking cool too, except for the limp climax where Dezel dies and the kidnapper gets shot in a weak-ass 'tie up the loose ends' moment by the detective. The alternate ending on the DVD was SOOO much better. Denzel blowing himself with the bomb up the ass and taking out the kidnapper's mansion. Now that's a 'man on fire'. -
:)
The moment this site stops posting that stupid worthless inept tart, it's history :) -
Damn, guess i never checked out the DVD extras. I thought the ass-bomb would have made more sense.
Perhaps Scott just thought that would've been too silly. Yeah, as if the fact that he hadn't already killed Dakota Fanning wasn't silly enough. -
PELHAM 123 fucking SUUUUUCKED. Denzel was decent, but stuck in a really, really bad movie. In any reasonable year the PELHAM 123 remake would have been among the summer's worst. This is no reasonable year... and it's STILL among the summer's worst. No mean feat with YEAR ONE and SHITFORMERS stinking up theaters.
-
Pelham 123 was awful!!! The two films are too much alike. What they need to do if they want to save this new film Unstoppable, is change the setting from a train to a plane.
-
Warriors remake? Also how many more 70's classics is Tony going to remake before he gives up?
-
Kevin Costner's piss, yeah the ass bomb was 'da bomb'. Stick your MAN ON FIRE DVD in and check that Creasy Bear out.
ps. the deleted scenes also include a pretty sweet sex scene with the 'mom'. Milf-tastic mate. -
I hope Denzel is freed from the yoke of having to work with such a hack so he can go on & do good work. Tony Scott does not understand how to cut suspense or action. Look at Deja Vu & Domino. The man is an over-editing fanatic, & I'm an editor (which probably gives me about 10% credibility because I've only worked in television & in that time I've worked on real crap ...but hey, we're not talking about me, we're talking about him). Tony Scott is a director that just gets under my skin because he is so bad & his direction & editing-style are often antithetical to what I feel are the hallmarks of good moviemaking; which to me is being emotionally immersed in a good story. All of his frame-tinting (w/ gels or in post, I don't care) pulls me out of the experience of the film, as does his fast, jarring editing style. Why would anyone want to make reality look unreal the way Tony Scott does? & then dice it into tiny pieces? It's a mystery to me. He also uses lots of valuable Hollywood assets that would be better spent elsewhere. This is why Tony Scott is a prick.
-
Plus - don't we have enough unstoppable train movies. Atomic Train, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, and of course - Runaway Train.
-
Ridley Scott is obviously the better brother and it paid off in American Gangster (if no real awards, but fuck the Oscars anyway). Denzel was good in Phelam, and I thought Travolta was hilariously awesomely over the top, but it was directed way too "busy". Michael Bay busy works for Transformers because the entire concept is just outright silly so you can get over the top stupid, but Phelam was a small character drama, and too much whiz-bang spin the camera around Denzel's head about 20 times in the movie kinda kills it.
-
Runaway Train. Jon Voight baby!!!
-
my sweaty balls until Rothman is found dead in a Bangkok hotel with a rope around his dick and a ninja star through his forehead. That is all...
-
after they spent it all on Disaster Movie Too: Drink Your Own Piss.
-
One Denzel vs. Runaway Train movie a year was enough.
-
The remake-happy goons at MGM own that one via their chunk of the Cannon library. It could happen.
-
with a few minor changes
-
Denzel should be barred from doing actiony films
-
To take on an expensive star driven action movie and bring it in on time and on budget?
Can't think of any other reason why the guy still gets work. -
I love Johnny Depp, but seeing his name with burton makes me NOT want to see a film. Same with denzel/tony.
-
That's basically what book of eli is.....or at least take out denzel give some roles to michael jai white he is forever linked to greatness by having why so serious yelled in his face and dying one of the coolest deaths ever.
-
it's a good job I know my warriors.... otherwise I'd have been insulted.
CANNN YOU COUNT...... SUCKERS!??!?!!!!!!!! -
I WIN
-
Tony Scott is overrated.
-
Just wondering! Since rothman took office, has Fox turned out any thing that would be considered classic... You know, something like say Alien, Star Wars, Planet of the Apes. I have been racking my brain trying to think of one, not coming up with anything.
-
in my opinion. it proves that eric is the more talented of the roberts siblings. and voight as manny was fantastic. they should do a remake with angelina jolie and eric roberts daughter emma roberts called runaway train 2:the next generation.
