Avi Arad Out To Adapt PS3's UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE For The Big Screen!!

Published at:  Jun 26, 2009 8:33:30 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Avi Arad is producing a movie adaptation of the popular PS3 game UNCHARTED: DRAKE'S FORTUNE (available HERE).

The story follows a descendent of explorer Sir Francis Drake, a treasure hunter named Nate Drake who believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue. The search becomes competitive when a rival hunter joins the fray, then is racheted up several notches when creatures -- actually mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis -- begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure's true secrets.

...explains THIS piece in Hollywood Reporter.

I just tried to re-watch KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL on Blu-Ray. I can't imagine UNCHARTED could fail more than it did, so I'm cautiously open to this for the time being.

    by kevinwillis.net

Seriously. It was better than Last Crusade. And I can easily see how this could fail more than KOTCS. See any of the Indiana Jones rip-offs that came out in the 80s?Of course, I always despised "Romancing the Stone".

    by gerrylum

Joe Flanigan from Stargate: Atlantis would be perfect for the role of Drake. He doesn't have quite the star power as Nathan Fillion, but he fits the role SO much better. He looks like Drake, sounds like Drake, and he's even done some Uncharted-style platforming on Atlantis.

    by marxeffect

I love his movies but I don't think he is the right person for Uncharted. Drake is a full on athlete, with the way he climbs and jumps around the environment with ease. I don't think Fillion has that kind of physicality!

    by pitfall_harry

I've played this game and I loved it. I think Nate and his supporting cast are all cool but this game and from what I can tell the sequel are basically action movies you can play. I just don't see the point in this at all....Well, other than trying to make more money off the property.

I guess I'd be alright with it IF it was an original story but it sounds to me like they're just copying the story from the game.

I'd love to be the writer that gets paid to do that. All this guy will end up doing is turning on the game and copying the dialogue. LOL :)

Your right! This doesn't really need an adaption. Play the game and enjoy, the film won't do anything for the franchise. The movie studios should get into video games if they want a piece of the action, there's still a long way to go when it comes to good story telling in a majority if games.

    I've got a feeling...

    by pitfall_harry

This is where entertainment is headed anyway....Most of the current generation of video games are more or less big budget movies anyway.....I think the clock is ticking on traditonal movies. I can see them going the way of betamax within the next 20 years. The big thing will be more interaction between the "moviegoer" and the "flim"....The only thing these people have to worry about who create these games are the limits of their own imagination. They can do whatever they want for a fraction of the cost. While regular "live action" films are having to basically turn themselves into games by using CGI just to keep up with what the public expects. It's just friggin weird....Live action movies are becoming more "animated" where as "animated" games are becoming more realistic....It's not that I think though that all of traditional cinema will fade away. I'm sure no one out there is going to want to play a 2 hour "game" of "My Dinner with Andre". LOL :D

    by pitfall_harry

By the way......I personally don't think Indy 4 was the mindnumbingly fucked up piece of shit a lot of other members around her do but I do agree that it DID NOT live up to the original three. IF anything it was a watered down sequel to Last Crusade. I fear Indy 5, IF it gets made, will be even worse. Watching Raiders and CS back to back is like night and day! When did Lucas and Spielberg loose their passion for the character and the series is what I'd really like to know? Neither one of their hearts was in this film, that's for sure.....

    by bluetunehead

seriously? if they put a decent plot with that it could be really funny. you'd have to make the world of the movie suitably ridiculous the way most people play (meaning you run over people constantly, use rocket launchers, steal helicopters, get arrested and spend the night in jail and then get released minus a few bucks, absurdities like that). it could really be a hilarious dark comedy if done right.

There's an article about Drake's fortune talking about why they like Drake and the different aspects of his personality they like, and what people those traits remind Empire of. They had people like Die Hard's John McClane, Alien's Ellen Ripley, I think even Indy. I think arad saw that article and a lightbulb went off in his head. Drake's an "everyman" type of character...

    by pitfall_harry

That's why they were compairing him to characters like John McClane. Someone mentioned that he was "athletic".....Yeah, he is, but.....I don't know IF that would be required for the movie. Remember it's a game and the environment was created to be a puzzle for you to navigate around so the character has to do some pretty "athletic" things....When it comes to fist fights and gunfire. He's uncoordinated and sloppy....It's actually refreshing to play a character that doesn't know every damn martial arts move in the book the second you start playing. By the way the characters looks were based off of Nathan Fillion. The creators of the game acknowledged that after the game came out. I do think Fillion would be a good choice, but.....I think Drake is younger than Fillion is....Knowing Hollywoond they'll cast Zach "Jazz Hands" Ephron for the role. :(

    by big_daddy_nero

Thought of it as a potential movie the whole time I was playing it, and it had a decent twist at the end, a good story, and could make for a fun summer flick, *IF* they actually DON'T worry too much about trying to recreate the moments in the game.. and just let these cocky and fun characters inhabit the story.. lots of good set pieces, lots of good bits, should harken back to *earlier* SS, the kind of fun and exciting flavor we saw in something like Jaws or CEOTTK or Raiders.. maybe a little Romancing the Stone.. and there's enough content in the game to focus more on the story and less on the constant gunplay and acrobatics, which will get very quickly boring if seen more than a couple of times.

The PS3 is loosing them cash hand over fist and they are loosing almost all of their exclusives. Especially since the architecture is difficult to use and they treat 3rd party designers like shit. And they can't make the deep price cuts the other two consoles can make to keep competitive. A great machine + shitty business model = shitty console.

    Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

    by nocalflicks

The first Uncharted basically was released with little attention or hype, it reviewed very well with critics, but took some time to catch on with the gaming crowd. When I finally got it, I loved it, it was nonstop action, and the writing was great. It was one of the first times that during my gaming experience I truly felt I was playing out the sequences of a movie.

Well, this past E3, Uncharted 2 won PS3 and OVERALL Game of the show, so you can expect Uncharted 2 to blow away the experience of the original, I can't f'n wait.

Now as far as adapting it for a movie goes? I say WHY? The game itself already feels like a movie. That's really all I need and/or am asking for.

Drake's Fortune was one of the better games to come out in the last few years, for ANY console....I LOVE how people are always predicting the demise of the PS3. Seriously! Put your powers of procognition to good use and warn people of impending earthquakes or other natural disasters instead of telling us all when a console is going to die! Maybe that's the ONLY way your power works...IF so then you'd make a great canidate for another sucky character on HEROES.

I've had two fucking X-Box360's BOTH got the dreaded "Red Ring of Death"....Haven't had a single fucking problem with my PS3. I wish someone would take the 360 and every other fucking piece of shit Microsoft product and throw it in a fucking time capsole. Then in 50 years the people of the future can put it on display to show how fucking badly we were raped by Bill Gates. THE PS3 OWNS YOUR ASSES!!!

    by johnno

Uncharted was a great game, but this kind of move really makes we fucking wonder... does it need to be a movie??? For example Metal Gear games could be condensed down into some good movies... but Uncharted was simply perfect for its length and everything! There's no way a movie can be better than the game... The charisma between the characters in the game is better than in any movie I've seen recently! Uncharted 2 looks likely to kick everyone's ass this winter!Another reason Uncharted has no reason to be adapted into a movie is because the game's characters don't feature some overpowered characters. They're pretty much everyday people and there's nothign fantastical about them to draw a conclusion that this would make for some epic cinematic moments in a film. Metal Gear and God of War feature over the top craziness that can be exciting to put onto film! Uncharted is Indiana Jones and we already have enough of them... I'm keen ona Metal Gear or God of War movie because I can picture in my head the potential cinematic awesomeness being put on screen... but Uncharted? Sure it can definately work, but it's not generating the same level of excitement in me as seeing Snake battle Metal Gear or Kratos tearing up shit in slo mo... Sorry but no, Uncharted is perfect on its own a movie can't hurt but there no way anything will live up to the characters from the game... Naughty Dog should just make an animated movie using the same cast... Or someone should just play the game live through a projector in the theatre...

    Drake vs Indy

    by panthermatt

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (the game) is the best Indiana Jones movie since Raiders. That said, it doesn't need to be a movie because it's every conceit is derived from Indiana Jones (which itself was derived from old movie serials). As was Tomb Raider. An adaptaion of an homage to an homage to 70 year old pulp film serials does not sound like a good idea.

But bring on Uncarted 2: Among Thieves! I'm geting it the day it's released

Uncharted was an awesome game and I can't wait for the sequel. The suggestions of Nathan Fillion or Ryan Reynolds for the role of Nate? I can actually see both guys doing really well, though Reynolds has the edge in the athletic department. Either would be great really. I've thought since day one Uncharted would make a great movie and could give us a new Indiana Jones style franchise. I know video game movies usually suck, but I'm really hoping this one breaks out of that mold.

For me is was the way they handled Marion's character, the whole boat truck sequence (falling off the cliff, then off multiple water falls, then Marion comes out of the water laughing, still holding the steering wheel like a retard), the fact that every single jungle scene felt like it was filmed on a sound stage, the CGI monkeys and prairie dogs, the drooling John Hurt character, the stupid ant sequence, the quicksand scene, the half-assed way Indy and Mutt found the skull, the acrobatic midgets guarding the ruins, totally wasting Cate Blanchett's character, the crappy cgi aliens coming to life during the alleged "climax", and the hamfisted wedding at the end.
Having said that, what they did right was: Most of the opening action sequence, the nuclear blast sequence (I truly felt the danger of his situation and was on the edge of my seat), the shot of Indy walking up the hill to see the mushroom cloud, the 50s diner and chase was fun, Mutt wasn't nearly as annoying as he could have been, the general saucermen theme (even if the execution of the story blew goats).

Are those scenes really worse than Indy and Company jumping out a Plane with an inflatable raft, hiding under a stone coffin to escape a river of flaming gasoline, fistfighting in a boat thats getting sucked into propellors where every cut they get further away instead of closer, Taking on a take riding a horse, Killing a guy with a flaming kabob, cutting a bridge in two where only the bad guys fall, lowering a woman into a flame pit where they let our enough chain to dip her three times, jumping in a mine cart only to land exactly with the wheels on the track. You get the idea. Need I go on?

Uncharted feels like great material for a film...

    by m_reporter

... but the news that Avi Arad is attached as producer kinda lower my hopes. Everything might go well if a bigshot director gets attached.

Thanks for spoiling the game for people who didnt know there were mutated nazis and spaniards until they were near the end of the game. Why dont they tell us that Snape kills Dumbledore for the next HP movie.

Just saw the DVD of DR. Horrible, and Fillion is hilarious. And Neil Patrick Harris is one talented guy. I've heard this is the best game for the PS3 and the sequel looks amazing. Just won Best Of Show At E3 I think. I may just have to plunk down $400 bucks to geet one.

I will be first in line....

    by gooch1195

Uncharted to me has been the second best game to come out exclusively on the PS3, the first being MGS 4. So a movie to be made containing the material is probably one of the best ideas. **Note** No Orci or Kurtzman, and ABSOLUTELY NO Michael Bay!!!!! Revenge of the Fallen is even worse than Wolverine, and that is pretty bad. Anyway, I think as long as they can get appealing actors (with talent), a good script, and a decent budget, Uncharted will be the Raiders of this generation.

KOTCS was still better than The Last Crusade. This will probably suck, but could possibly be good. I very much doubt that though. Damn you Hollywood!

    by rgc123

I agree with some of the castings listed above..Fillon, Campbell, etc. However for those of you've who've played the game they all know that it was such a good experience that a movie won't be able to hold up. Oh and somebody above mentioned that this game is just a Tomb Raider knock off. FALSE! Uncharted is everything Tomb Raider tried to be but failed at so badly.

    by mr_sinister

With an original story rather than an adaptation of one the games. Like others have said, the first one felt cinematic enough without the need for a film.

    PS3 over Xbox

    by ranma627

I'll take my ps3 any day. It's a more reliable system and it has the best games which is all that matters in the end. And as far as it doing bad financially, in actuality, it's only a few million behind worldwide and it'quickly making up ground. Also with the upcoming release of Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 and the price cut which will most likely be here come holiday season it'll soon take over. It has the best exclusives too. So keep your Halos and your Gears of Wars and I'll take my Uncharted, Little Big Planet God of War and KIllzones any day. I still dig Xbox 360 but PS3 has it beat. If you owned the system you'll see where I'm coming from.

    IF the studio is smart.....

    by pitfall_harry

They'll make a prequel to the game instead of just copying the first games storyline. Like others have mentioned the "supernatural" ending has already been ruined by the news article. They basically just summed up the entire game's storyline in one blurb! Yeah, brilliant way to get people into the theaters to see it! Are they fucking retarded? Imagine IF Raiders was a game first and THEN they made a movie out it and copied the entire storyline including the ending. It would NOT have had the same impact on moviegoers as it did back then. I'm also a little sick of hearing Drake's a rip-off of Lara or Indy. Shit, none of them are original. Indy's a rip-off of Alan Quatermain.....The ORIGINAL not the piece of shit Richard Chamberlain movie. I like Indy, Drake and Lara.....They're all great characters.
