Goodbye, Farrah...

Published at:  Jun 25, 2009 3:43:47 PM CDT

Merrick here...

Farrah Fawcett passed away today after a protracted battle with cancer. She was 62.

Farrah appeared on TV's SPIN CITY, MURDER IN TEXAS, and was Emmy nominated for her performance in THE BURNING BED.

Her film work includes the 1986 adaptation of William Mastrosimone's play EXTREMITIES, THE CANNONBALL RUN, and Stanley Donen's SATURN 3 - in which she costarred with Kirk Douglas and Harvey Keitel.

She was also Holly, the hostess of the New You Shop in the 1976 film adaptation of William F. Nolan's LOGAN'S RUN.

Farrah may be best remembered as Jill Munroe on CHARLIE'S ANGELS, and for a swimsuit poster which became one of its decades most memorable icons.

Thank you for everything, Farrah.

Peace.

Makes a change to see an RIP talkback that hasn't had a single negative comment so far. Testament to the girl, alright - she was beautiful and sweet, never seemed to leave a bad mark in public - final Letterman appearance aside, and even that wasn't too bad. Going to put in a triple today in tribute - Cannonball Runs and Saturn 3. She was one of the things that made being a kid in the 70's great and she will be missed - along with Roy Scheider, she's one of the few celebrities I genuinely feel a bit of a loss about their passing. God bless, Farrah.

The human genome has been mapped, yet we still have cancer?

    by soylentmean

The medical industry, if it had any fuckin' decency, should have completely eradicated cancer from our collective memories. It should be a fucking myth, a legend, a boogeyman to scare children around campfires. Yet it's still here, because there's no fuckin' money in a cure, only in "prevention" and "treatment".

I lost my dad to cancer, or in reality, to chemo therapy. If people would actually wake up, pay attention, read a fuckin' book, and not dutifully believe every fuckin' lie told them by their governments or so called authorities they might start to question the inconsistencies presented by an avenue of research being conquered and the continued threat of curable diseases and conditions.

Fuck you cancer and fuck you medical community, ostensibly playing god to fill your coffers.

My thoughts go out to Mrs. Fawcett's family, because she most certainly didn't have to die from this.

    The original 70's "it" girl

    by fxmulder35

She was the first. First gal I had on my wall...followed by many more.

I was just getting ready to begin high school when she hit big. To say that red one piece bathing suit was hotter than any bikini...is an understatement.

I followed her career and life after that. Always pulling for her. I even watched that NBC special a month or so back. Some folks thought it was depressing..but I saw it was her way of dealing. She was "Farrah" to the end.

Sad day folks. Just like another vestige of our youth is gone. Are we so very far behind?

Rest in Peace, good lady. I hope it's everything you hoped and dreamed for. You tried to live a good life...it's all any of us can do.

They didn't just want to look like her. They wanted to be like her.And that Logan's Run clip reminds me how much I love Jenny Agutter. Now there's a natural beauty. Weirdly affected when I heard this. She seemed like a sweet person, very very human, and her struggle against cancer was a brave one - but I think the real answer is that some people are so identified with a time in your life that losing them feels like the shutting of a door. To be that iconic for a generation of lovelorn, hormone-infused boys is not a bad legacy, not bad at all.

    Cancer makes me fucking angry...

    by sk229

I honestly cannot believe that people do not see through all this 'research' and these fucking endless fundraisers and other bullshit. How much money is being poured into this, and yet they're no closer to a cure? It's all about treatment, isn't it? This kind of goes with what I saw of Obama's medical plan last night. This country is fucked in the ass by one thing - greed. Neverending, perpetual, disgusting GREED. All the questions are like, "But what about our company needing to make $2500 per family, what do we say to our shareholders?" Ummm, that yoking healthcare to profits was a mistake of capitalism to begin with, you fucktard. Are we never supposed to say, "Ok, this doesn't work, sorry guys, you shouldn't be making this much money off of HEALTHCARE." And nobody wants to hear this talk of preventative medicine either. In other words, saying to a patient - "your problem is not enough sun, no exercise, and you eat shit. Stop all that and you won't need any medical care, hence no money spent, no money for big pharma, etc." IS COMPLETELY OUT OF THE QUESTION because there's no money in it.Sorry, but this is something that makes me angrier than anything else as I watched my sister-in-law suffer through treatments for breast cancer all of last year, and get two conflicting reports about it near the end, and they always, ALWAYS find something else just when you think you're finally ok. Of course people are scared to play russian roulette with their life, but you know what? that's exactly what your'e doing by LISTENING to these fucking idiots. I don't go to the doctor because they HAVE tof ind something wrong with you... that's their job. And even for doctors who don't want to prescribe something or just want to say, "You know what your problem is? You're a hypochondriac, now go home, take some advil, and stop complaining," at least 50% of their patients are paying so much for healthcare that they go to the doctor every time they have an itch because 'Hey... I"m spending all this money, might as well get something for it.' Is this the correct attitude to have about OUR HEALTH? give me a fucking break... I don't like Michael Moore, but Sicko made some damn fine points about how fucked up things are.Another medical story - my grandfather, who is built like an ox, worked his ass off his whole life as a construction foreman and was a junk collector (the dude could strip copper wire all day just for the fun of it), and is about as old school as you could get (had a pigeon coup in his yard his whole life), had some heart problems about ten years ago and the doctors told him if he didn't get a quadruple bypass, he wouldn't live another year. Yeah... he's EIGHTY-EIGHT NOW. He told them to fuck off, that of course they'd say that because there's money in it and who's going to argue with the doctors, and that the surgery alone would probably kill him. The big guy is still alive and kicking. R.I.P. Farrah... maybe someday, people will stop dying from cancer because of greed.

Hi, I am a Cell Biologist

    by dixieflyer

To the guys poo pooing medical research. We really really want to "cure cancer", but it is a far more complex disease than polio for example. You should really think of each type of cancer as a different disease as each type of cancer functions very differently from each other. Each type of cancer has a very specific treatment and we researchers usually study one form of cancer, not just cancer in general. Another problem is, cancer is part of you. With polio, at least we were attacking an invading entity that our immune system had some resistance to. With cancer, we have to fight essentially our own cells that are diseased and not kill the healthy cells. But you guys know all this. My point is we are working very hard to cure cancer. Please give to a cancer research facility. Farrah, God bless you and rest in peace.

    by sk229

if we find a cure, it will destroy a multi-billion dollar industry. Many, many people will be out of jobs. Money for all those researchers and facilities will dry up. No more excuses for lavish fundraisers. How many people depend upon cancer in order to feed themselves and their families? This was essentially the argument about the health plan last night. 'But we depend upon overpriced healthcare and skyrocketing costs for our 10% annualized returns. How can we compete with 'free'?' The correlative in health care to the auto industry might very well one day be, Who Killed the Cure for Cancer?I'm open-minded, but I find it very difficult to believe that I should trust the answers of the same people who would have to rethink their livelihoods should they find an answer to the problem they're trying to solve.

    Early detection research

    by drewlicious

I read an interesting article in Wired a few months ago that talked about funding early detection research. Kind of makes me wonder what strides they're making in that area. The sooner they catch it the easier it is to kill. I suppose this applies more specifically to the most common types of cancer but it could save a lot of lives.

    There are cures

    by the starwolf

To the twit pooh-pooing research, there ARE cures. Not just endless, expensive 'treatments'. Heck, my late father had been diagnosed as being in the terminal phase of cancer of the lymph nodes and there was nothing to do ... except they just came out with a new form of radiation therapy which shrank the tumour just enough that they were able to operate and rid him of it. He wound up living cancer-free for another fifteen years. Trouble is, what worked against that cancer doesn't necessarily work against other types. Early detection really does matter.

    by soylentmean

it's the people who "fund" the research. Pharmaceutical companies exist to make a PROFIT and have no interest in CURING anything.

That's like believing tobacco companies are really and for true pursuing a tobacco that doesn't have addictive qualities.

If pure, non-profit driven research were actually behind the search for a cure for cancer, well then I would support the cause. I just can't help thinking that cancer has been cured and that cure was buried right with the person (or persons) whom discovered it.

It's a suspicious thing, to say the least. And I most certainly tend to say way more than the least.

Fine. If each cancer is like a different disease then shouldn't they have cured at least one by now?

I'm not saying there's nobody in the medical research profession who doesn't care it's just we have thousands of drugs for every thing from crazy leg syndrome to erectial disfunction. It seems most of the time and money is spent on short term prevention or long term treatment.

I want to pick up the paper one day and "Cure for Cancer found, and it's free!" And every once in a while I do read about some study in Finland or some such place where they managed to eradicate cancer cells from a group of twenty mice with no reaccurance of the disease, then I never hear another word about it.

If all the money that went to continuing treament went to finding a cure I'm sure they'd come up with something pretty quick.

    by indyabbey jones

I mean yes it is sad to lose a loved one...but if nobody ever died we would be an over populated, over run planet and would just eventually destroy ourselves (something we are doing now anyways). Cancer is the universe’s answer to thinning out the population because we has humans are greedy and don't know when to stop repopulating the species (why must some people have 7 or 8 kids, it should be limited to no more then 3 for the next 50 to 60 years to combat over population)Trust me, you cry now but when the world has gone post apocalyptic you'll be begging for more cancer deaths if only to eliminate potential competition for the scarce oxygen and resources the earth is left with

There are good people doing good research

    by dixieflyer

Sure there are people getting rich off of treatments for cancer but there are many many more of us who take very little in the form of wages and work many hours of over time each week for free because we care about what we are doing. Give to a non-profit research group and you will usually be supporting people that really care about helping their fellow man and not getting rich. The majority of researchers are good people who put their lives into their work and don't ask for or make a large salary. Look for and accentuate the positive as well as debase the corruption and greed. Also, there is no conspiracy stopping the "cure". If we cure a cancer, we will still have to cure all the other forms of cancer and those cancers will more than likely evolve to become resistant to what ever "cure" we come up with. Finding one cure will not put people out of work, if anything more people will be hired to find out why that cure worked and how we can apply it to other forms of cancer. Even if all cancer was magically cured tomorrow all the researchers would just focus on something else, like MRSA, the common cold, HIV or erectile dysfunction. And this is good, because at any given moment we really do not have enough scientist working on all the problems that plague mankind.

When you read of cancer cells being cured in mice, that is usually proof of concept. We are able to control every aspect of the mice physiology and even control exactly what their cancer is like. If a treatment works in mice it usually means in this perfectly controlled situation this cure has a proof of concept. Now translating that treatment into the far far more complex physiology of humans causes many problems. The treatment may not respond at all in humans. Cancer is one of the last things to be cured because it is seriously the most complex disease we encounter. Remember we are seeing up to 90% and better recovery rates in some forms of cancer that were 99.9% fatal 60 years ago. That is not a 100% cure but it is a sign of hard work moving in the right direction.

I understand that we are overpopulated and a culling of the herd in inevitable, but cancer doesn't really kill anyone, it just slowy eats away at a person till they can't live. It (depending on which form) is fucking awful.Cancer isn't necessary to lower the population, if you really wanted to go balls out and declare what would be "good" to the human population overall in order for survival, go with killing off the Catholic church/faith (no offense to anyone, I'm alluding to the no contriceptive/abortion rules).

Yeah, the theory that the earth is going to be overpopulated and we'll be fighting for food and resources is not a new thing. Back in 1968 there was a book called "The Population Bomb" by Paul Ehrlich that said: "in the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death" due to overpopulation. This of course, didn't happen. The major epidemic in western society is now obesity, not starvation. Sure, there are pockets of the world where starvation is still a threat, but no where near as bad as it was 40 years ago.

Also, cancer is a poor way to cut down the population. I doubt it's really nature's doing. Nature likes the big pandemics that wipe out big swaths of humanity in a short amount of time. Cancer is something different. But who really knows.

But perhaps someone such as yourself with no empathy at all will just wipe us out with The Bomb or something. I've seen less evolved people like you that think that empathy as being an asset, when of course it isn't at all.

But anyway, weak troll. Try harder.

Every single day, several times a day and today was the day. Weird I know but...trueNow that it has happened I am sad. I was just starting my career of jacking off when Farrah's poster came out. Now, I actually didn't think she was all that hot like most of my friends back then did but I still liked those nipples of hers. I always preferred jerking to Jaclyn Smith pics.So long Farrah. No more suffering.

Cancer is a beast. It left an indelible mark on my family.

I have no idea if there are conspiracies, but what dixieflyer said is true. Every cancer is different and so research and treatments must differ. Support research and, most of all, support sufferers.

By the way, being "old school" and denial and disdaining treatment is not a viable plan. No doubt there are folks who go into remission. God blessed them. Do not count on being so lucky yourself.

OLAPARIB is a new drug, literally announced today that showed amazing results in prelim tests. it closes down one of the bodies own primary cellular repair routes, which means that the body uses a secondary route - this alternate is causing the tumours to stabilize and in many cases to actually shrink.

And she had it detected way before, but the doctors said it was ok to just take out the small cancerous speck and chemo wasn't necessary. Bad diagnosis. L.A. Times is only reporting hospitalization

    by reportabuse

'Sez the Jacko was rushed to UCLA medical center this afternoon after suffering cardiac problems. No report of death however: "Michael Jackson rushed to hospital (Updated) 2:06 PM June 25, 2009 Pop star Michael Jackson was rushed to a hospital this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. Capt. Steve Ruda said paramedics responded to a call at Jackson's home around 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The parademics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda told The Times. Updated at 2:12 p.m.: Paramedics were called to a home on the 100 block of Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard. Jackson rented the Bel Air home for $100,000 a month. It was described as a French chateau estate built in 2002 with seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces and a theater. The home is about 2 1/2 miles, about a six-minute drive, from UCLA Medical Center. An earlier version of this post incorrectly described the time to travel between the home and hospital as two minutes."

TMZ are more likely to be right...

    by v'shael

For two reasons... Reputable sources have to (sometimes) follow the law, (such as Federal Privacy Law) and so have to wait for a Doctor to officially call it, and sometimes for the next of kin to be told before the public can be informed. And second, because TMZ is not "reputable", they can rely on the phone-call tips, which are often accurate though not-official.

You can bet that the guy lugging doctor equipment around the ward for minimum wage, isn't going to pass the chance up to sell the confirmation to one of the only sites that will run it.

She was a goddess to 1970s kids -- the hottest woman in the solar system and married to the coolest guy on the planet, Lee motherfucking Majors.

As for THAT poster, I saved up money and bought it a Wynn's five and dime in Austin back in 1977. I still have the poster and have considered framing it every now and then, but promptly forgotten about it soon after. I may just have to do it now.

RIP Farrah......you've always been an angel, just now one with wings. I still have that poster, and a cup with the same design. The thing that impressed me the most was what a gifted artist she was. Her paintings and sculptures were absolutely amazing. She will be missed, and had beauty in more ways than one. Rest in peace and thank you for all the beauty you brought into our lives.

    by conspiracy

She was a decent actress, who sadly was forever typecast by a poster, and by all accounts a decent and humble human. Even more, her work in documenting her own illness was incredibly honest and brave. It really is too bad her passing and contributions are overshadowed by the circus across town.

I really, really, feel terrible about this...

    by organs

I know I shouldn't. I'm not exactly a fan and I'm too young to be turned on by her when she was young (born in '81). But, it's just such a terrible way to go, and it hit me waaaaaay too close to home.

Last year, my mom got sick at the end of June with liver cancer. It couldn't be removed because it started to spread. The doctors said they'd try to nuke it with chemotherapy once she recovered from surgery.

Only, she got worse. She found it harder to walk, talk, and even move her hands. She contracted type II diabetes and we had to move her around in a wheelchair and keep a commode near her wherever she was.

Each week was a nightmare. Eventually she lost the ability to speak altogether. Then she couldn't even nod her head. Then she heard voices and started talking to no one in particular. Then she couldn't speak again. In her last week, she couldn't even swallow.

She died at the University of Chicago Hospital on Sept. 20th at 9:30 pm. A month or so afterwards, the doctors found out she also had pancreatic cancer.

The entire period of her being sick was the very end of June to near the end of September. She was just a month shy of 62 years of age, and she had both liver and pancreatic cancer. Farrah had liver and anal cancer and was 62 when she died.

It's a horrible, awful thing her family is going through. I should know. I really wish I could offer my condolences.

Farrah, you will be missed. You always came off as such beautiful person, both inside and out. And not like some of the wannabe whore's or social sluts of our time. You came across as someone who emitted real class whoever you went. As someone who had the whole package, not just part of the picture. You are one of the the very last of a golden era for women. When women, could still be women, and not have to pretend to be like men or something else. You showed us, beauty, brains, and courage. You showed us that there was still something decent left in the world in a time when chaos and disillusion was pretty high. It hurts so damn much to know that you have passed. So very damn much. I dreaded hearing about this. You were won of the best Farrah. There will never be anyone else like you. Thanks for everything.
