Zack Snyder Talks 300 Follow Up/Sequelish Thing...
Merrick here...
At yesterday's WATCHMEN DVD soiree, Zack Snyder talked to ComingSoon about Frank Miller's oft discussed (but still mysterious) project which in some way relates to 300. Seems Miller is "knee deep" in developing the comic upon which Snyder's eventual bigscreen adaptation will be based.
"I think we would use the same technology... I don't want it to look too Star Wars-ian... Just from what [Miller] told me, it would be bigger as far as landscape and terrain. We're going to see Athens and the Aegean and other places. There would be an opportunity for bigger visions, though I'd hope for the same aesthetic. The tech we used for '300' was not a revolution. It's basically what the weatherman has. Look, instead of Accuweather it's Sparta... It's going to be the same way, but on crazier steroids."
...says THIS article over at Coming Soon.
I wouldn't mind seeing Accuweather on steroids... there must be some potential in that, no?

Watchmen, I didn't care that much for. Just didn't do it for me. Nothing to do with the squid, but I think swords and sandals may be Snyder's strength.
-
"Enough with injecting slo-mo/fast-mo into smart material, Zach, it's back to what you know best: greased up, semi-clothed, screaming douchebags killing each other in ways in service of Frank Miller's pseudo-historical fascistic screechings!"
-
Who has to spend 5 or ten minutes floating around in mysterious nakedness before giving her vision. And with bigger boobs this time. Just sayin'.
-
It was awesome, and you know it.
-
I liked it a lot more than Watchmen. But, will it be the same without Gerard Butler? Had made an awesome King of Sparta.

Didn't see the first one and have no fucking interest in a kind

type thing. Of course I am probably not the demo he's going after at 34 yr old. To me, the first one was a gay mans dream come true.
-
Way to expand your horizons Zach.
-
about the real battle of Thermopylae which was infinitely more interesting and factual than 300. Hopefully, Snyder's 300 sequel will inspire similar programming.
-
Worst fucking idea to come out of Hollywood this week.
-
...too easy...
-
I agree. That special is called LAST STAND OF THE 300 - very interesting & illuminates many missed opportunities. It's worth taking a look at.
-
I really enjoyed 300 for what it was. It was jacked up testosterone guys ripping apart some creepy and strange foreign people from lands which they had never seen. I LOVE the history behind the event and remember watching "The 300 Spartans" in High School and thinking how cool it was. Remember, this isn't a historical piece... its an exaggerated take on a "legendary" historical event. Quite possibly similar to the "real" Trojan War as archeologists have found some evidence that Homer's epic may have been rooted to an actual event. But yea, I"d like to see the director expand a bit at least to NEW Graphic Novel material.
-
300 Grammaton Clerics vs. any poor fool dumb enough to get in their way. Spartan kata, hell yeah.
-
or horror.
-
I'll admit that it's a little homoerotic but still fun. Spartan's fucking rock!
-
I mean, the ones I'm currently using are pretty insane, but I'm looking for some bat shit crazy 'roids.
-
Watchmen did not fail. It made a decent, albeit not great amount at the box office but it's the kind of movie that will kill on DVD and Blu Ray. Especially with all the different versions being released
-
this guy flat out refuses to EVER make something original
-
sequence of all the Spartans dining in hell.
-
I really enjoyed 300 and Watchmen was fantastic. Plus I totally enjoyed his remake of Dawn Of The Dead, which I really didn't expect to. He a great director. So yea, I'd be happy to watch a sequel to 300. BUT, I'd love to see his take on God Of War.
-
I'D FAP TO IT!

The Persian history obsessives havent been here yet. They usually fly into the "Gyllenhall as the Prince of Persia" TBs like shit off a stick.
I would have imagined they'd LOVE a 300 TB!

by Stephen Pressfield the best told version of the battle of Thermopolae - Michael Mann was once attached. Will never happen now, unfortunately.
-
Gentleman's Queer Taste? - sounds like 300 would be right up your alley so to speak.
-
They were thinking of doing He-Man the same way they did 300, what ever happend to that idea of maybe thats what Frank Miller is doing
-
This is cool news. I loved the visual look of 300 - it marked it as clearly a fantasy movie rather than a historical one - and this sounds like it'll be a sequel 'in theme' though not a direct continuation.
Do this, or GOD OF WAR next pls Zach. -
But only because I bought some magazine with an interview, where Snyder explained that it was meant to be an exxageration.
It's supposed to be like a campfire version of events, told by David Wenham's character. Once you get that, it's pretty cool.
Unless you're my Dad, who watched about 20 minutes of it at Xmas, stood up & said "This is just "fuckin' stupid. Load of shite." -
Fuck.
-
Can this Miller fetish end already? Please?
-
Leave the movie as it is, I agress with what others have said. Do God of War!!! Or get with the times and do some anime adaptation like Beserk...
-
That was only hinted at in King Leonidas' reply to the messenger at the beginning of the movie. I really think Miller and Snyder can expand on that. 300 was so overtly homoerotic, I really think that this is the next logical step.
-
Hur, hur, hur.
-
Yeah DarkShite, if anything I wouldn't have minded if he'd 'exaggerated' things a bit more. There's a cool deleted scene of giants with arrow-firing midgets on their backs going up against the Spartans - wished he'd left that in.
Hope this new movie expands on this with more 'freaks and monsters' for the slaying.
Also CLASH OF THE TITANS is bound to be PG-13, just bound to be. Snyder's new one will almost certainly be R. -

Probably wondering why Duncan Jones can do with more than 5 million than he does with nearly a hundred million. That being said...That being said, hopefully he can continue to up his game. Watchmen didn't hit the mark for me. -
All that crazy stuff didn't fit Gladiator - but it fits 300.
-
all of this guy's work is worthless garbage, only good for a short term fast money enema for the studio.

...
Sorry, that's all I got. -
Is this a straight sequel or just another separate story set in the same universe??? I like Synder's films tho... He's made some of my favorite movies of this decade (Dawn remake, 300, Watchmen was flawed but I still liked it)...The sequel probably has no chance of being as good as the original but I will still pay to see it...
-
you guys didnt get the memo??
-
300 was won of the worst movies I have seen right up there with Hoodlum, Wing Commander, xXx, and Fast and Furious. A sequel would just be a plan to recoup the losses of "The Watchmen" advertising budget. If Zack wants to make a sequel, I would gladly welcome a 2nd "Dawn of the Dead"

Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger...as an older bur barbaric general killing persians. Then maybe we can finally have King Conan.

..more than twice. So many cool shots and sequences, I enjoy it each time. I see from the talkbacks that some out there seem to hate it, which I don't get at all. It's not perfect by any stretch but I think it was a uniquely inspired artistic work on he whole.
Beats the heck out of all the shitty remakes and formula films that are crapped out to the theaters constantly. -
Will AICN not talk about this celebrity death like they did with Ed McMahon?

...when Miller doesn't even have the graphic novel done yet? Talk about putting the cart before the horse!
Also, how do you make a sequel when everyone that matters is dead? No matter what story they tell it'll be different battle with different people set in Greece filmed in the same style. Not a sequel at all. -
One mention of 300 and a bunch of losers start shouting about homoeroticism. They fought without shirts! Get over it! You guys must freak out at the beach."Oh Jesus! Guys without shirts on! How gay!"Idiots.
-
Stop bitching about good directors and bitch about the jerks that make movies like transformers 2 or wolverine origins.....
I loved 300 and the Watchmen and come on his Dawn of the Dead was fun.
-
Granted 300 was a twisted take on history, but there were some pretty large scale naval battles that took place as well. I want some this time.
-
The guy who directed Wolverine: Origins was respectable until that movie; after all, his first major film won an Oscar for best foreign film 3-4 years back.
-
I mean, get over yourselves. You make out guys who fought barechested is somehow homoerotic and you hate it, yet you lose your shit over the idea of Stallone pumping out a new movie, or profess love for the older Swarzenegger flicks? It seems movie hatred is selective and blind. You hate the guy despite the fact he gave us a far, far better remake of Dawn of the Dead than we ever could have expected.....you hate him for finally bringing Watchmen to the screen - why I have no idea, it was as well done as it could have been, and more faithful than most other directors would have managed...and because he adapts a Frank Miller piece and makes it a huge success? WTF is wrong with you douchebags? I've loved Romero's Dawn since seeing it at the flicks with my brother, loved Snyder's version too and saw no disrespect there. Have loved Watchmen since first sitting down and reading the collected graphic novel about 6 years ago - yeah I was late to that party, but again I saw no disrespect in Snyders version, quite the opposite. Was never that keen on 300 as a read, but loved what Snyder did with it and funnily enough, the thought of Leonidas bumbanditing his way around Greece never entered my head until you bunch of closeted fucks brought up the bizarre subject. Anyone bagging on Snyder can go fuck themselves. The guy is a great director, better than most of the hacks this site supports, and he's made three terrific movies so far. The guy obviously loves what he does, does it with a passion and has given me hours of entertainment. What the fuck more can you ask for?

Irony is that historically the Spartans were more about the boy love than any other Greeks. A young boy would be taken under the wing of an older warrior to be taught everything he needed to know. Then when he was older, he would move on and get his own "protege."
"Why did the little Greek boy leave home"
"He didn't like how he was being raised."
Why did the little Greek boy return home"
"He missed his brother's rearing" -
But I had a blast watching it on openning weekend in the cinemas and would see another movie that strived to be stupider.

-
I hate his wasted talent on remakes and adaptions. I remember after dawn of the dead and 300 thinking this guy is talented and has his foot in the door. All he has done is squandered it on more adaptions and unoriginal CRAP.
-
A bunch of big burly dudes in spandex jumping on top of each other, and when they aren't doing that they're lovingly patting their team-mates on the ass.
It's funny when 300 first came out I had no intention to see it because I thought it looked cheesy... but now it's one of my favorite films. It's a movie about masculinity, that's why it is so popular with guys.
I think it's a good idea to keep the same look, make it look like it could be the same film because it had such a disticnt style. I think it would be great to see more of the "city life" in Athens, and to see how they portray all the different types of people who would make up an ancient city.
And WATCHMEN was a masterpiece. Too bad that can't have a sequel.
-
Poor guy, he doesn't even know it.
-
...and could not care less about the Snyder hate. Directors miss sometimes, all of them. The frustration for me comes from people loving one film and then deciding later that the director sucks because they make another film that they don't like. It's all part of our quick edit, microwave society. Directors need time to grow over YEARS of time. Anyway, enough of that. Like I said, I love 300 (the comic AND the film) and I'm looking forward to seeing the next installment of both.

Makes no sense. It's one of those memes that everybody thinks is clever for repeating over and over. It's disappointing to see how many people are so infantile that they keep making that joke.
Just like it's disappointing to go to ANY watchman discussion, and see pages and pages of blue penis jokes. The immaturity is rampant. -
That's right, I said it. Zack Snyder is the juvenile version of Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, and Orson Welles. Michael Bay is just juvenile. :)
-
...will be about the Athenian side of the war. I'm sure most are hip to it now, but for those few who aren't, it was the Athenian navy that actually defeated the Persians.

Is it Monday?
-
its lean and focused and is unapologetically masculine and direct. In all seriousness i hadnt seen a movie like that since Predator. bad guys are monsters and good guys arent much better. Wacky sidekicks, deep symbolism and political correctness are for other movies. If only the Bays and Sommers could learn from it. I like deeper, smarter action movies, too, but there is a place for brutal, direct action flicks that focus on cool imagery as well. Judging from Hollywood's frequent failures at trying this, it must be more difficult than it looks. i wouldnt want 300 to launch an army of clones, but its a fine little movie by itself.

Zack Snyder's movies are like a Vegas stripper, fake boobs, too
by captain happy
His films lack a basic humanity & naturalism. Zack, for object lesson, see "Children of Men". That's how you tell a story.
-
not a damn thing.
-
Check under every blanket. Search every bell tower.
-
Or even Gears of War!!! That shit is perfect for him! Then again we all thoguh Transformers was perfect for Michael Bay... Hopefully Zack can direct without having comic book panels to copy from... But a God of War movie would be right up his alley! God of War III will be out next year! He can make 2 films. The first movie covering Chains of Olympus and God of War... and then God of War II covering the second and third games! Come on! You know this is good! Then after Gears of War III is out, he can combine all 3 games into one movie! That stuff is Zack Snyder material!
-
Fake boobs, too much lipstick. His films lack a basic humanity & naturalism. Zack, foro object lesson, see "Children of Men". That's how you tell a story.
-
what a ridiculous comparison. two entirely different movies, with different themes. i wouldnt even say they are in the same genre. 300 wasnt supposed to contain humanity and naturalism. its fucking Frank Miller.

Captain Happy are we in THE MATRIX?
I swear I just had a deja vu. -

not really sure what was so gay about the film.
by jackknifed_juggernaut
if anything, when compared to its source material, the Spartans' uni was pretty conservative. in the graphic novel, they all fought with their balls to the wind. and the physical stature of the Spartans mirrored those in the novel as well, so i'm still not getting the 'gay' vibe. guess you guys don't get to the beach and/or gym much.
-
they assume the only people who like it are frat boys who picked on them in high school, and then assume that these frat boys hate being called gay. its the most retarded shit imaginable.
-
i bet many who think it was gay are WWE fans.
-
Well, I do. I'd go see this. Ancient history is groovy.
-
I thought "300" was a fabulous kickass film. "Watchmen" was cool too, though I probably won't see it again. Just didn't grab me the way I'd hoped it would.
As for Zach Snyder's future, I'd strongly encourage him at this stage of his career to direct something original. The "300" addendum movie might BE that if it's a brand new story, so we'll see. But I'd love to see him go original. No silly "God of War" video game movie. That shit sounds good in theory, but always sucks. Always.
Go original, Zach. Let's see what you've got. -

Wasn't it "Meet The Spartans?"
-
If you feel aroused when those "perfectly sculpted abs" are on screen. Or the sight of those abs disturbs you. Then, yes, you are having gay feelings, whether you like it or not, thus making the movie a gay experience for you. The arousal (or the strong feelings of rejection towards your own feelings) you got from the movie is so strong that its basically all you could notice. People say 300, and you think GAY! It says more about your sexuality than anything else. I guess studying human anatomy is gay too. All anatomists, who look at bones and muscles, their origins and insertions, they must all be gay too! The same goes for classically trained artists, or those that draw superheroes for a living, they must all be gay too! Gay, gay & gay! My point is, if homosexuality is something you hate, and you think 300 is gay (oh, the horror), then i have some bad news for you and your rectum...
-
bought the dvd of it the day it came out. Haven't been able to sit through the thing once. It is boring.
-
Unless what you want is to complain. Everyone was drooling all over the 300 trailers and when it came out, even though it delivered exactly what those trailers promised, everyone started shitting on it, calling it homophobic (which I have never understood even remotely) and all that bullshit. Meanwhile, Frank Miller has had a definitive stylistic approach since he fucking started, and now that he continues to write in that style, and make a completely original and visionary film out of it, you all call him hack like you've got fucking hairballs. Hating everything does not make you original, it just makes you devoid of joy.
-
I don't see the need for a 300 sequel when all the main characters are dead and we know what happened. If they want to do something ancient Greek, do the Illiad or the Odyssey, lord knows, no one's ever done a good version of either. As for Miller, I'm still pissed about Robocop 2 and 3 and the Dark Knight Strikes Again. Even his recent Batman & Robin stank bigtime.
-
...about 30 minutes ago. You won't believe what happens in the locker room. It's filled with other men. Many of them are naked... and they are right there in the same room with you. It's a good thing that the average talkbacker is so out of shape that they can't even walk under their own power, because some of you seem to be suffering from so much repressed homosexuality that your heart would explode.
-
But at least the Spartans were Butch. Not like those boy-loving Athenians.

After his total destruction of the Spirit, he has nothing to offer me.

A bad ass aardvark killing whomever. Zach Snyder's next comic book movie.
-
....which was the largest demographic gay or straight, has fuck all to do with it. Gay men went to see a movie about muscled warriors who spent their time fighting in loincloths? Wow, who would have thought...? It's not about whether a certain element appeals to gay guys, it's about whether the film's intent was to ham up a gay angle, which it clearly didn't - in real life, there was lot more boy love going on, this film if anything looked down on that, hence Leonidas's put down about the Athenians. The issue isn't about whether a gay guy would enjoy seeing Gerard Butler in a loin cloth, it's that daft pillocks who want to bag on a director who's doing well for himself and producing some damn good films are seizing on any ridiculous idea to try and support a non-existant argument. Anything we don't like personally now, it seems, has to be 'gay' or 'worthless' by default. It's a braindead and utterly moronic battlecry of whinging nerd babies.
-
Good to see the "300 IS GAY" brigade being smacked down, especially because they're probably the same ones jizzing over The Expendables and every other Stallone/Schwarzenegger movie. Don't forget Conan the Barbarian, he looked pretty gay too!
-
And don't forget the shit that was... The Dark Knight Strikes Again.
-
People say things like "Didn't see the first one and have no fucking interest" then say "the first one was a gay mans dream come true." Seriously watch the fucking movie or shut up and don't post if you really have no interest. I, for instance, am not going to post in a Hannah Montanna thread because I don't, have any interest. This person obviously has a vested interest in "Gay men's dreams come true". Haven't seen it, don't care, let me now tell you why it sucked! ROFL, you can't buy shit this ridiculous.
-
Wow, what a completely undisguised cash-in. With Miller creating a graphic novel to base it on and everything.
Please, no sequelized version of the "this is Sparta" line. "This is Greece", "this is Greater Sparta", "I am Beowulf", etc. -
Now I know you're trolling. Either that or you have a really shitty audio setup. The lisping in 300 is just as prevalent as the fart jokes in Watchmen, I guess.
-
Could be... I've never stopped to ask everyone, but it's okay. My best friend is gay they don't frighten me like they do most talkbackers.
-
That you, buddy?
-
And so publically too, how brave. Here's the thing: Watching that movie, I saw nothing gay whatsoever - in fact there is anti-homosexual sentiment proclaimed in the movie. You however saw a bunch of shirtless guys and obviously are a little ashamed about your first instincts being "How umm, uhh, gay. Yeah, they're gay. Those big, muscly warriors. Gotta be. They can't be straight, not big guys like that. Oooh, look how they're treating those Persians....very dominating. Why are my pants feeling tight all of a sudden..? With all this gayness going on? Ooooooooooooooh noooooooooooooooo! I'd better go and complain about this movie on a talkback somewhere! That'll get rid of these bad thoughts!" Accept it dude. You're the one calling it gay, yet everyone else apart from your flaming friends saw a movie about soldiers killing people in an exagerrated version of a historical battle. Might want to think about your own motivations here, Liberace.
-
Although resisting the urge of bringing back Gerard Butler will be difficult.
I think they can get a lot of mileage out of having Dilios come back as a mentor to Leonidis son and future king Pausanias.
They can even spin something about how Leonidis nephew is an usurper to the throne due to Pausanias being unfit to rule due to age.
That would be a nice subplot. -
i wonder how many brilliant, successful directors have NOT written their own material? 10, 25, 50? get the point? idiots
-
I totally agree. I dont understand the Snyder hate. I wouldnt mind him on the Avengers movie.
-
Haahahaha. I would be Cerebus here if it hadn't been taken when I first joined way back when.
-
Michael Mann adapt Gates of Fire.
-
...but anyone with a library card and a fifth grade education can tell you the Spartans were almost exclusively heterosexual. They're warrior culture relied heavily on the ability to breed new warriors. For you mouth breathing sheep, that means they had to have sex with women to make children. They were the ultra-conservatives of there time. 300 is a great story/legend that should not be forgotten.
-
I'm totally down for a Snyder God of War adaption!

It would be neat if they tackled the Peloponnesian War
by excommunicated
The war between Sparta and Athens. Would be fertile ground for a "fantasy" take like that in 300. A story that condenses most of the War and boils it down to a few battles can definitely work.
-
I enjoyed 300 but how are they gonna make a sequel? There just doesn'
-
I swear, when Leonidas breaks the phalanx and begins his immaculately choreographed spear-and-sword rampage, in 'ramp-up, ramp-down' real time and slo-mo coolness, it was the best piece of action I'd seen in a long time. As much as I liked LOTR, 300 fulfilled what I thought a good (non-realistic) ass-kicking fantasy battle sequence was all about.
-
I liked the DOTD remake and Watchmen but didnt care much for 300.
Zack needs to ease up with the slowmotion too. -
About the price of a movie ticket these days! ZING!
