On SMALLVILLE, Zod Will Be Played By …

Published at:  Jun 23, 2009 11:37:47 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

English actor Callum Blue (Alex on “Secret Diary of A Call Girl”) will play iconic Krypton criminal mastermind Zod on the ninth season of “Smallville.”

Blue may be best known to American audiences for playing the reaper Mason on 29 episodes of Showtime’s “Dead Like Me.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Nellie Andreeva says Zod was introduced in 1980’s “Superman II,” revealing that she never noticed Terence Stamp threatening Marlon Brando in 1978’s “Superman.”

Stamp, confusingly, played Zod in the “Superman” movie franchise but plays the voice of Brando’s character, Jor-El, in “Smallville.”

Fast forward to the 2:51 mark in the clip below and discover that Zod looked more like Stamp than Blue earlier in the series:

Tom Welling is older than Callum Blue

    by robotking

Only by a few months, but still that makes this casting completely retarded. Shouldn't Zod be like 20 years older than Clark? But reinvention of Supes has always been the Smallville way. Maybe no one ages in the Phantom zone?

    Interesting choice

    by my pretty pony

He was great in "Dead Like Me". Very charismatic actor. I think he'll do an excellent job as Zod. Much better choice than bringing Sam Witwer back. I'm looking forward to his interactions w/ Cassidy Freeman.

    Kneel before bad ideas

    by shutupfanboy

From what I understand he is supposed to be the main villain for the entire season. That makes no sense since Zod wants to conquer the world, not some hick town and its dirty big city next door. They fulling up the season with named villains for the ratings boost. What the show needs to do is finally kill of Chloe and move towards Lois/Clark. This show has a lot to redeem for the second part of last season.

    by spyguy

They're phantoms, after all, so they don't have corporeal bodies that age, need to eat, etc. Good thing too, because finding a decent toilet in the Zone is probably not an option.

    Is this the last season?

    by i am rocko

I hope so, and I am a Smallville apologist, but even I am thinking it has gone on far too long. Supergirl was well done a while ago, and then went, and Welling is looking the age he currently is (I think 32) more and more, and having long hair and lots of make up just does not cut it anymore to make him look younger. Perhaps WB are chugging this train along since they did not make as much money from Superman Returns as they hoped???

    by mr. zeddemore

Um, no more confusing than Christopher Reeve/Margot Kidder appearing. It's a nice in-joke for the fans, and at the same time casting rather good actors/actresses. Reeve's episodes were fantastic.

    by wt

That was a shame- I miss all those people that unquestioningly worshipped Family Guy.
Yeah I occasionally see Smallville on a Sunday- like all soap operas, I know it's rubbish but still compelled.
As for the guest star thing- meh. This is the problem with a lot of American shows, because of the 22 episode thing it seems storylines get stretched.

    Kneel before Todd!

    by oisin5199

pretty funny bit from Supernatural last season. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Zod a disembodied spirit in current Smallville continuity? So is Callum Blue just playing the body he possesses? Just like Zod possessed Lex? And am I the only one completely confused by the whole Tess/Candor thing and how that led to Zod coming back?
btw, Nasty, the last I heard Rosenbaum is NOT coming back, that he specifically said he would only come back for the final episode(s?) of the series and even then only if they let him use a bald cap. I guess he got a little tired of shaving the head. And with how long they're stretching this series out, that could be a few years from now.

Why didn't they reuse SAM WITWER?

    by drath

He was pretty good as Doomsday and would have been great as Zod, and they set him up as Zod when they said he was his spitting image--WHY FUCK THAT UP? Because the actor didn't like his Doomsday arch? Newsflash, it actually DID suck in the end, especially since he'd made the character likable enough that he deserved a better finish than he got. Total fucking mistake, this one, I'm very disappointed they ruined such a great set up.

They didn't have him contracted for another season

    by cavaliergirl

They invited Sam Witwer to come back next season, presumably to play Zod, but he turned them down. Given a few interviews, he seemed really put off by the way they FUBARed his Davis/Doomsday storyline, and I guess he didn't want to return for another round. I imagine that's why they didn't focus on Zod's face in the finale. Although that appeared to be Sam Witwer in that final shot, they must've known that he didn't want to come back when they edited that scene.

Like Drath, I'm disappointed that they ruined that whole Doomsday storyline. Smallville's ruined many a plotline, sure, but that one really stung.

They should have stuck with Stamp as Zod...

    by genre_boy

It would have been smart. Perhaps too smart for the average fan, but General Zod imitating Jor-El -- Ka-El/Clark's father -- for 9 seasons would have been a terrific twist and re-ignited interest in Superman II.But if Gough and Millar have left the show as executive producers, I guess all bets are off
