THE LAST AIRBENDER trailer is manhandled by ET, but I HAVE IT HERE FOR YOU - The Right Way!!!

Published at:  Jun 22, 2009 11:08:37 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here earlier today I got a look at THE LAST AIRBENDER trailer - which will debut online tomorrow. ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT had the ability to show it tonight, but as you can see - they took a trailer of TWO LONG SHOTS and diced it up to where you really have no flow to it at all. The trailer begins with our hooded airbender doing a complicated BO routine surrounded by candles - blowing out sections, then with a thrust down they all go out and he removes his hood. Then we're in a shot where he pushes a wind out of the temple and we slowly follow, out of the temple looking down at the cliff face, then the ocean - where we see an armada of strange ships and catapulted fireballs. It is pretty nifty. Obviously just a teaser trailer but it shows M Night's predilection for long shots. But it shows a scale and action like we've never seen from him. I'm really hoping for something amazing. M Night needs it, and it'd be nice to have a great AirBender movie, right?

Grainy though it was, chopped though the trailer may be, even giving it the benefit of the doubt on that basis - that looked absolutely awful. Shyamalan certainly needs a hit after the last three movies.....this movie is not that hit though. Hope he's bracing himself for the bad reviews....they're a-coming, alright.

Still, I liked Lady in the Water, Signs, Sixth Sense and Unbreakable very much...so am usually willing to give even his maligned films a go. That trailer however, to me, just looked daft. For one thing, children doing martial arts can never be taken seriously. Beyond that nugget alone, the rest of the trailer just looked bad to me. Hope Shyamalan knocks it out of the park, I hope he gets back on his feet and delivers another movie of the quality of Unbreakable. Just can't see this film as being the one to do it so far, but who knows. I'm not optimistic though.

    by guntermonkey

Why is hollywood obsessed with making "live action" versions of animation, books, or graphic novels? Geez, just go watch or read the source material and be entertained. I don't need hollywood's interpretation of the source material--it then becomes a second hand art form. I'm a fan of M. Night (he writes his own scripts and films them! He understands original material in a medium!), but really hate movies that raid other art media...For example: Lord of the Rings? Read the damn masterpiece books! League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Read the damn comic books! Air Bender? Watch the well-done animated series! So much is lost in translation with all these stupid movie versions...what, can't people read? What, can't people pick up the DVDs for Airbender and enjoy them for what they were originally intended? OH YEAH, I forgot...hollywood is a constant state of remakes, rehashes, and raiding source material all for the sake of MONEY. That's the bottom line.

It was already developed in a distinct medium (Japanese animation) and well received in that medium. Enjoy it on DVD and don't make it a "movie"... urgh.

    M. Night used a long shot, and thus long-shots are egomaniacal and pretentious. He also released a trailer, and thus trailer's are hacky because they either A)Have a twist ending, or B)Don't have a twist ending. All you M. Night Haters answer this question:

    by guntermonkey

What other director in recent history has both written and directed this many films in a row (up until Airbender)? Sure, there may be 1-2 lesser movies, but his percentage and talent are remarkable considering he's doing the whole thing himself...that's damn impressive. His lesser films may not be GREAT, but they aren't trash either. This is a talented guy, you have to admit, regardless of whether you care for his style or work.

    by 100proof

... but his last couple of movies completely negate your argument. There are plenty of writer/directors out there who don't have to rely on a hacky gimmick to put butts in theatre seats. I'm not a fan of the Sixth Sense, but I'm willing to admit that at the time, it was a unique filmgoing experience that captivated audiences. Rather than take that good will and become an interesting auteur with a unique voice, ol M. Night decided to just continue milking the "what a tweest!" teat until it was completely dry and no one gave a shit anymore. It was shameless and, as with most shameless stunts, delivered diminishing returns. Putting himself in increasingly larger roles in his films didn't take away any from the "self-important douchebag" moniker he gradually earned. While I'm willing to give Airbender a shot (mostly due to the fact that M Night didn't write it), but I can't understand how people continue to defend the man as anything other than a one-trick pony with an interesting visual style.

PT Anderson, Wes Anderson to name a couple.and if churning out movies is all that it takes to be talented, Roger Corman would be the supreme chancellor of Hollywood.the best response to your argument is this: by almost ANY standards, Shyamalan's movies has been getting progressively worse. each one is a little less than the one previous. Sixth Sense is the best, and the fucking death air is the worst. the only possible exception is The Village, which came in the middle but may be not only his worst, but one of the biggest turds in movie history.from Roger Ebert's review of The Village:
"Eventually the secret of Those, etc., is revealed. To call it an anticlimax would be an insult not only to climaxes but to prefixes. It's a crummy secret, about one step up the ladder of narrative originality from It Was All a Dream. It's so witless, in fact, that when we do discover the secret, we want to rewind the film so we don't know the secret anymore.

And then keep on rewinding, and rewinding, until we're back at the beginning, and can get up from our seats and walk backward out of the theater and go down the up escalator and watch the money spring from the cash register into our pockets."Shyamalan made a great thriller, but he's been elevated to a position he's never earned. doing everything yourself, which you seem to indicate is inherently proof of real talent, is really just ego and vanity. if you're going to do everything yourself, then you better be Soderbergh, or Kubrick, or Coppola. otherwise, you're just an average filmmaker with no one telling you when your ideas suck.

    by snarky2

The thing the story has that most action movies don't, are real subplots. You actually care that Aang feels like the entire world falling is his fault. You care that Zuko is trying to decide between evil (to be accepted by his family) or good (to follow his missing mother's path). All of the side characters have interesting back stories that can be expanded on without derailing the movie. On top of that, you have the special effects and unique animals in that world. He could fuck it up, but if it's done right it should be huge.

    Shyamalan ain't a hack

    by happyfat73

Pretentious, egotistical and precious? Yes. Hack? No.
A hack is someone who will sell-out and produce any old dreck for a paycheck. That ain't Shyamalan. In fact, I think he's a very talented director - he's got a great eye for composition and scene pacing also knows how to use sound to great effect (Signs has a masterful use of sound to create suspense)/.
Shyamalan's problem is that he is a shit screenwriter and is too self-absorbed to acknowledge it. Team him up with a good screenwriter and I reckon he could produce gold. The problems with his later films have largely been script-related.

Honestly, what was The Happening? I have never found out if it was his own miscalculation or his own deliberate fuck up. Watching that movie, I got the impression he wanted to make it not just horrible, but an excruciating film going experience. As if it was his aspiration. I think his slow descent throughout his career shows the truth: that he got lucky with a great twist, and had nowhere else to go but down...until he reached this. A bald kid in a room full of candles panned outwards to a bunch of four-year old cutting edge effects of fireballs and battleships.

This trailer sums up M. Night's style perfectly: Failing to live up to it's own pomposity with an inexplicable lack of filmic restraint. In other words, he's a boring hack. Always will be. He's more of a producer-director, rather than a director. He is definitely not a screenwriter. UNBREAKABLE was a wonderful fluke.

    The Happening...

    by imagin78

...is a B movie. That is what Night was trying to make. Something along the lines of Them or The Blob. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I will take one hundred Shyamalans over the true hacks like Sommers or McG. They have no style whatsoever. Shyamalan is a gifted director with a great visual look.

I personally like The Village. It takes a lot of balls to pull the rug from under the audience. Everyone is expecting a monster movie and instead get an allegory on violence in America. I will take that everytime over the brain fart that is Transformers 2.

I love the first three-fourths of Signs but it has one of the worst endings in recent memory.

As much as I've disliked M. Night's work the past several movies, this didn't look bad at all. I'm glad M. Night decided to direct an adaptation of a property for a change, instead of writing his own screenplay for production on this. It's a changed of pace that might've energized and focused him in a new way.

    by malificus

..but this trailer was too little, too soon. The studios are in such a hurry to whip up enthusiasm for properties that they crank these teasers out when little, or virtually none of the film has actually been shot, and it shows. That being said the kid looks close enough but his moves lack snap and definition, weak sauce. The cg outdoors shot was even worse and the identical, repeated ships looked completely fake and rushed. Not even gonna get into M. Night and jump on that dogpile, I just can't imagine all these Avatar fans actually think that looked good. It's early, but it's completely underwhelming. Hoping for the best though, the property deserves better than someone with such a crappy track record.

    Hacks

    by carolinaprojectionist2005

You people make me laugh. You come to a movie site, watch commentary tracks on dvd's and have seen all the special features on the LOTR dvds and you think you know what it takes to make an effects heavy film. Guess what? you don't. As a matter of fact, I don't either, but I do know that everyone here throws the word "hack" around like they actually know what it means. Just because you don't like someone's style or they're version of your TOY movie doesn't fit with what you had always imagined, you call them a hack. You should really think about getting so upset over a toy movie or a live action version of a cartoon...excuse me "Anime" cartoon. The fact is, any filmmaker who does those kinds of films, by your definition, is a hack. Real directors, guys who make "art" movies with rich characters and dialog and real human drama are not going to ever make a film like Transformers or The last airbender or The Dark Knight...they won't because it's beneath them in their minds. Do I think the directors of those films are hacks? No, absoulutely not. It takes a special kind of talent to marshall all that tech and turn it into a film, and those people are not hacks. A hack is the guy who fixes your car at the garage. a hack is the guy who drives a taxi, a hack is the guy sitting across from you at comic con who just bitches about everything while never actually DOING anything on his own. You think talking shit about Bay and M. Night and others and talking about how bad the box office and reviews will be makes you sound smart to all the other bottom feeders, but it actually has the oposite effect. It makes you sound sad and pathetic. Why don't you worry less about M. Night getting his "shit together" and try and get yours together instead? I think, hit or miss, Night will be just fine.

    by tuskdude

Plenty of people like the Spy Kids movies and all, but doesn't it frustrate most people when notable directors take a movie to make one just for their kids? Wasn't that kind of what Lady in the Water was anyway? I guess there is a bit of demand for this particular franchise to get a film series going, and maybe it will be a substantial improvement over Lady in the Water and/or The Happening, but it looks like a pass.

By the way, I have no intention of seeing this film because I have no interest in the kind of movie it is, but I do not feel the need to personally atack Night and call him names and say he's a one trick pony and a hack and a loser and a has been and all that shit. I like Night. I don't always like his films, but I have no ill will towards the man and if he makes something that I find interesting, I'll go see that. Why is it that it has to be all or nothing? Why do we either worship a guy or want his head on a plate? Why is there so much hate towards everybody who makes a film we don't like? And don't give me the tired argument that guys like Night, Bay and McG are destroying movies and raping childhoods and all that sad tired shit. Shitty movies have been around since before sound in film, okay? Every year since film began has seen bad, horrible, shit movies, and it's no worse now than before. These guys make movies that, like it or not, people like. And we can whine and bitch about how dumb people are and stoopid the mass tastes are, and I agree to a point, but the fact remains that they make films people like and at it's core, Hollywood is a business and the dollar will always win.

Once you create something and put it out there for the wolves to devour it takes alot of balls to take the criticism both good and bad. There is alot of pressure involved and I'd love to see how they'd buckled under the pressure. Guys like Night and Richard Kelly are living their dreams. Talkback insults mean nothing to them. How many people in the talkback are living their dreams? Are they adding something to the culture they love so much? If you don't like a film or it's premise, don't go see it. Simple. It's all very democratic that way, no one holds a gun to your head and makes you go. If you don't like it, that's your right. Why do you have to go after people who don't share your view? Why are they dumb and their mothers whores and their fathers perverts? You might think that your opinion is the only one that matters and everyone who doesn't agree is wrong, but guess what? That isn't the case, never has been and never will be. Everybody hated Wolverine, everybody said we should boycott Fox for daring to get involved with blocking Watchmen, but in the end, Watchmen tanked and Wolverine is close to 200 million. Is that right? Maybe not, but the people spoke and chose what film they wanted to see. That illustrates perfectly the fact that people like us (yes, I am lumping myself in) have absolutely no power when it comes to saying what films get made and what people do or do not like. I guess it's because we feel so helpless in that fact that we adopt a superiority complex and make ourselves feel better by saying that Bay is a hack and has no telent, even though we go to his movies and hate them the whole time and then get on here and bitch about how much they suck and that we'll never go to another one of his films (until he makes said film, at which point the whole cycle will repeat) and go back to feeling all superior about "our" taste in film. Of course, during all of our bitching, Michael Bay has made 80 million dollars on the first film, bought an effects house, produced 5 other films and drives his 200 thousand dollar car home to his 25 million dollar house and snorts coke off a supermodels stomache. Yeah, I'm sure he really gives a shit what we think of him. And you know what? He will continue to do that because he makes movies that people want to see. You can call him a hack all you want, but I would change places with him in a heartbeat. The guy makes 180 million dollar films on time, on budget and shoots at a rate that most directors only dream of. In the real world, that person isn't called a hack, he's called a professional. Just saying.

    by knowthyself

Say what you want about what he puts on screen. I've never seen a director more in control of his set. Watching the transformers features really made me admire the respect he commands on set from everyone involved. That is why studios trust him with 200 million dollar budgets. He puts every penny on screen. Even in a film like Wolverine I'm wondering why such an expensive film looks like it was shot for 40 million dollars.

So every asian person to you should have slanted eyes and dark skin. So animation has nothing to do with portraying innocence and facial expressions (like Disney did). So you're just an uneducated moron who sees a circle with two dots on a piece of paper and says, oh he must be white....fucking idiot.

If races were accurately reflected in the film, Katara and Sokka would be eskimos! NOT asian.

I think it's very VERY sad that we see a character with large eyes and automatically think him eastern. The world of The Last Airbender is NOT our world. You DO NOT KNOW where certain races would be. Infact, in that world there is Fire, Earth, Water or Air. No asian, western, european etc. Get over it and think for a second.

I agree with you completely. Somewhere, someone said that Bay was a hack and had no talent and everyone just latched onto that. They don't know what it means, they don't know really what it is they're talking about, they just know that it's cool to say that and it's not cool to actually like his films. When you call them on it, they all go to the same old tired lines about how he cuts too fast, how the action is so blurry and quick it can't be followed and that he's all style and no subtance, all just parroted back from some film school article they read in some magazine. They don't know what it's like to actually be entrusted with 200 million dollars, a release date before filming even starts and an army of 200 techs to order around, as well as coordinating work with the Millitary and work on bases around the world, dealing with studio people, writers, actors, effects people, making the literally thousands of decisions every day that comes part and parcel with a movie like this. No, it's easier to say that he has no talent and that he's a hack. They've never dont the job to be able to make that assesment, but they feel safe doing it here in the dark hole of the web. Why don't they sign off and go make an actual movie and then they can comment. You know why you never see ACTUAL directors talk shit about other directors? aside from the fact that it's poor manners and poor business? It's because they know how hard it is...how spirit crushing, bone wearying, plain old fucking HARD it is to actually make a movie. Anytime you hear someone talking shit about a director, you can be assured they, by definition, have no idea what they're talking about.

I am doing this BECAUSE it's a kid's movie. If this was a movie geared toward adults I wouldn't really care that much. I didn't care about the miscasting of 21 or Memiors of a Geshia Adults can differentiate fiction from reality. Children's world views are fully formed yet. When children see Asian mythologies (yes they were created by Caucasians but they have admitted to blatantly copying Asian myths)where white people save them, or white kids darkened to look ethnic, or eyebrows arched to look ethnic, I believe it damages children's viewpoints.

I am hung up on the money side a little, I guess, but it's because that's what the business is...it's a business. It's not about art, and hasnt been for years. If you want art, you have to get outside of the studio system, that's the only place to do that. That's what Fracis Ford Coppalla did, he left the studio system and is making smaller personal films like TETROS and that's great for him, I love that. But in the studio system, it's about money, smaller oscar bait films aside. I wish it were otherwise, but it's not. I wish it were, but that's not the reality.

    What makes Airbender seem white?

    by knowthyself

White is the default race when you choose not to give your character any race characteristics at all. Avatar lacks any such details so he defaults to white. If they really cared to give him such an identity he would be drawn more realistically. Satoshi Kon does this so its very much possible also Akira makes it very clear what race the characters are but Airbender does not and since its an American cartoon its very likely he's ambiguous so he could appeal to the white kids as well as the asians and blacks.

I'm hispanic so I'm all for diversity in films and cartoons. Its a pretty interesting effect this "default to white". For example when an author does not specify a race for his characters we default to white. I mean how many years of white washing did it take for us to do that so automatically? Its probably not right but its kind of how we've been programmed. I'd like to see that change over the years. But its the best explanation, like it or not, for why Avatar is played by a white kid in the movie.

Is that for all of Bay's talents off screen his soul less traits come off on screen 100%. He seems to have no emotional side and thus his films are void of any real emotion. He's got no artistic soul so his films always feel manufactured and sterile. The saddest thing about Bay is that for such a talented director he's got the emotional range of a fratboy and thats why most of his films lack a real connection with those of us looking for a little more heart with our action films.

    white as default

    by iseewhitepeople

This we can totally agree on. Hollywood has socialized people into equovacating white as the default in fantasy but I hold on to the belief we shouldn't just accept it. African Americans were also played by white people in the past and people were told to accept it but THAT stopped. Why can't it be the same with Asians. As far as akira goes I would have to argue some characters like Keneda and Kay were drawn typically "anime" style and they're japanese.

I agree with you. Michael Bay is a grown up frat boy. I think that's probably why he's so good at these kinds of films, he's like a 13 year old making films for other 13 year olds. He, for some reason, is perfectly tuned into that kind of "wow" gene that boys have. I, for one, think he should stick to these kinds of movies and stay away from the smaller, character driven stuff. And that's the thing, I agree with you about him having no soul...well, I think the same thing applies, I think it isn't that he's souless, it's that he has the soul of a 13 year old boy too..lol. But to ignore the talent it takes to make those kinds of films is a mistake. And after post after post from guys with "creative" names like: zombieheathledger taking shots at him (and others) with the tired old "hack" stamp is just annoying. You might not think it takes as much talent to shoot a movie like Transformers as it does to shoot three people talking around a table, but it does. Sorry, but it just does.

I do actually agree with you about cameron and Spielberg. When they are on their game, no one does it better. I don't know anything about Avatar (Camerons) except that it's coming, and that in itself is a nice surprise after knowing way too much about most films a year out from release. Like I said, I don't know what kind of film it will be, but looking back at the past, almost no film from my younger days had the effect on me that ALIENS did the first time I saw it. The same thing can be said for the first time I saw RAIDERS when I was a kid. Those movies had heart and soul AND slam bang action that made me dig my fingers into the hand rests. The first time I ever saw the trailer for RAIDERS was as a trailer in front of SUPERMAN 2, and from that moment, I was in love with the whole idea of Indiana Jones. Those are two different kinds of films, but they both moved me. Has Michael Bay ever moved me like that? Sadly no, but truthfully, very little ever has. I am always hoping for the best, I hope AVATAR blows me away, Hell, I hope TRANSFORMERS 2 blows me away too, but I don't really think it will. These days I take what I can get. I watched THE WRESTLER and it moved me, but when I go to TRANSFORMERS tomorrow night, even if it doesn't move me, there's still enough of that 13 year old boy in me to go "wow" and just enjoy the giant robots fighting and then go home and sleep like a baby. I'm not looking for a deep emotional impact every time. If I get one, that's great, but i'm not looking for one everytime. Sometimes I just want to go "wow". To put it a little more crude, everytime I have sex i'm not looking for a deep emotional connection. Sometimes I just want to get off. lol.

I would agree with you if Bay films it right. Transformers was poorly shot, in my opinion. I wasn't looking for Shakespeare but the cluttered designs and the frantic filming didn't work for that movie. If you're just gonna concentrate on action sequences then at least film it as opposed to cutting away to Shia and Megan while Bumblebee fights, or filming it so close where you can't differentiate one robot from the other.

Coming from an M. Night fan, I don't know what to think. This couldn't be more different than anything he's done before: Huge effects, adapted material, all-kid cast. I also have never heard of The Last Airbender until recently, so I no nothing about the cartoon. I'm not even a big fan of anime. Having said that, I'm sure I'll check this out (unless the reviews are God-awful). Also, regarding MY stance on M. Night, I do think he has a ton of talent. I'm sorry, but Signs will probably go in my Top 10 of the decade. I absolutely loved that movie. Yes, Lady in the Water & The Happening blew, but I just can't seem him STAYING that bad. Hopefully this flick rejuvenates his storytelling abilities, and gives us some better flicks down the road. One other thing: I also have a ton of respect for him, as he (up until now) has written & directed all of his movies, and they're all ideas from scratch. In the age of Potter/Batman/Spider Man/Transformers/remakes/sequels, he's doing this all from his own mind. That is talent, like it or not. It just needs to be executed better.

So as you can see, if they could not nail something like the race of the characters, they obviously cannot nail the production values either. And many crappy movies have great CGI (Star Wars Prequels, Terminator 4, Lady in the Water, ect)

Never mind that this kid was chosen on martial arts alone and man did that suck. I'm amazed most of you people thought that the bending was amazing, you guys sound like Harry even though you bashed him. Hay, guess what? Many Asian people auditioned for this film, here is one of them. http://tinyurl.com/l9cb6v THIS is what we could of had on screen pure martial arts wise since Noah was not chosen for his acting. This is and will be a train wreck like DBZ but 10x greater, including the delusional fans that will like anything that has Avatar slapped on it. Funny since that title was also removed too and even more importantly the Hanzi characters from the show that were accurate too boot! by ebonic_plague

Nothing quite so sad as people screaming "RACISM" over the casting of a CARTOON. It was lame when white fanboys cried their round eyes out over Michael Clarke Duncan playing Kingpin, and it's just as lame now when asian fanboys whine about Aang. Do asians have blue eyes? Because the "asian" characters in this "anime" do. I wouldn't have had a problem with an asian Aang, as I don't have a problem with an indian Zuko, but you people (YOU PEOPLE!) just want an excuse to whine about this movie. Honestly, from the little we saw of that teaser, this looks EXACTLY like an Avatar: TLA live-action movie should look. It is a FANTASY world, with mythical animals and characters that exhibit traits of various ethnicities and cultures. This sort of nit-picky whining is on par with PETA complaining about a fly. RACEBENDING.COM? Fandom never ceases to reach new depths of eye-rolling patheticness. I didn't think I'd say it, but on this issue, DGDB is absolutely correct. I can't wait to see what M. Night does with this.

    Iseewhitepeople

    by bruce vain

...isn't wrong on most counts (although you do go about making your point in a douchebagerly way, pal).

The character designs in the series run the gamut (so much as is possible within the structure of anime stylizing) from asexual preteens devoid of ethnic distinction (Aang) to deftly crafted characters (Guru) who do approximate an ethnicity.

Invariably, it is easiest to argue that every lead character in this movie should be played by Korean, Japanese or Chinese (or Laotion, Pinoy, etc, etc) actors, but then the blending of other ethnicities into the film would be that much more jarring (if you know the series, you have to admit Boomi [sp?] was designed as a white kid and the Swamp Benders as, well, white rednecks).

As far as I can surmise from the series, the Air Nomads did not have a societal base to draw from for benders but probably built their ranks from members of the surrounding nations (probably reading too much into the mythology here). But if that is anywhere near close, then even you have to admit that occasionally, as happened within the last decade when a white PNW kid was found to be the reincarnation of a revered Bhuddist monk, then the Air Nomads were likely the most ethnically inclusive nation.

That having been said, this casting decision is just that … a subjective call. The kid must have impressed everyone involved to garner the part. It is not as egregious an insult as casting Chuck Heston as a Mexican lawyer in “Touch of Evil.”

Nor can you deny that, as a matter of logistics, there were more white kids in the casting mix (for God’s sake, Iseewhitepeople, it is L.A., the land where casting moms outnumber soccer moms).

Finally, I’ll put this question to you: If John Woo wanted to get serious and make an authentic “Hamlet” in Hong Kong, would you restrain him to only hiring Danish actors that spoke Cantonese?

I'm reading about the Airbender world.....

    by dannyglovers_dickblood

....Avatar is set in an Asian-influenced world[2] of martial arts and elemental manipulation. The show drew on elements from East Asian, South Asian, and Western culture, making it a mixture of what were previously traditionally separate categories of anime and US domestic cartoons. Aang is the fun-loving, 112-year-old protagonist of the series, who is biologically 12 years old, but was frozen in an iceberg with his flying bison, Appa, for 100 years. He is the current incarnation of the Avatar, the spirit of the planet in human form. Aang is a reluctant hero, who would prefer adventure over his job as the Avatar and making friends over fighting the Fire Nation.-----------------------Ummmmmm yeah. So all those dumb fucks crying the kid needs to be Asian-- shut the fuck up. Its a fanciful world with ambiguous origins. Because they fight in a martial arts style, they MUST be Asian? Well that makes YOU pretty fucking RACIST.

My point is that all kids should be able to watch a "kids movie" and see themselves up on the screen as the protagonist. Whether that screen be in their living room, or at the theater. One of the better aspects of Avatar was its lack of the standard White Male protagonist. It's a sad commentary on the state of Hollywood that they couldn't recreate that in the theatrical release because of its nonprofitability.

What the fuck are you talking about? I've seen the first six or so episodes of the cartoon (a little too kiddy for me)and it's Asian-influenced but no specific culture or "race" can be attached to any of the characters, despite what the creators have said. by ebonic_plague

Hollywood is Hollywood, though. All cultures are subjected to the broadest stereotypes of themselves, whether it's aw-shucks whitebread midwestern hicks or rapping gangsta urban minstrel black people. This is something the cartoon can avoid by making Aang such a blank slate... the fact that there is no definitive answer to the question of what race he is allows kids to more easily identify with him. Ideally, I would have liked to have seen a mixed-race kid cast in the role, to personify this ambiguity... but as Bruce Vain pointed out, the reality of Hollywood casting is what it is. Would I have liked to have seen a little more faithfully cast roles for this adaptation? Yeah, but I don't think there are that many Inuit showing up to L.A. casting calls. I just don't think that this would be as specifically offensive a change as, say, DiCaprio as Kaneda in Akira. It doesn't call for an organized boycott, IMO, especially as they seem to have gotten so much else right with this production. But I see your point.

Cattle calls asking for people to come dressed in traditionally ethnic garb, and then not checking checking in the slightest to see whether or not the garb suggested in the press release actually matched the ethnic group they said it did. As for the Boycott? I'll admit that it was far easier for me to say I'd boycott the movie before seeing the trailer. I'm suddenly finding myself kind of wishing it was Summer 2010. by will2power

I'm sorry, but the trailer I saw was someone acting like they knew martial arts. The whole scene looked unnatural and his movements were not fluid. It a few steps above Jedi Kid in my book.

As for the race. I'm disappointed. But that's Hollywood for you. The simple fact of the matter is that there was some studio exec that made the decision that the protagonist wouldn't sell if he wasn't white. Demographics and poll data. No one wants to go to the movies to see an Asian. Oh, wait--I forgot. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon proved that wrong and launched a wave of renewed interest in Asian films. Naruto, Inuyasha, Ikki Tousen, Shikabane Hime--their popularity stands as a sign that perhaps Hollywood is wrong about that particular assumption. Plus a Martial Arts movie is sooo much better when the people in it actually know martial arts.

You're telling me that out of 4 billion Asians on the planet that you couldn't find 6 or 7 actors to put in a movie? Oh sure--you could use the argument that they might not speak English--but I point out that Antonio Banderas did Desperado without speaking English at the time. He learned his lines phonetically.

The arguments just don't add up. Hollywood claims to be about equality and social consciousness but they fail to live up to that image when it actually comes to practicing what they preach.

For those who use the argument that the voice actors of the cartoon were not white--that's because voiceover acting it's more necessary to find a voice because it's a part of the entire image. The visual style of Avatar, the principles, philosophies are distinctly Asian and the studio should have been true to that.

I find it strange that the studio had no trouble casting Asians in the villain spots. Funny, huh?....

The short answer is, Yes. That while the new choice of Patel for Zuko is leaps and bounds better than the original casting, there are still issues present.
    1) It takes the ethnically Chinese-inspired Fire Nation and populates it with Indian actors. No, Hollywood, one brown person does not fit all.
2)It makes the only non-white cast member the villain.

The Casting Call Sheets asked for WHITE and others...

    by mazuzu

    http://www.racebending.com/raceinavatar.php

The casting sheet for the four lead protagonists

The casting sheet clearly calls specifies Caucasian actors over 'any other ethnicity'. To an actor's agent, this signifies a preference for Caucasian actors. Non-white actors can apply, but they chances of getting the role are slim-to-none. This completely eradicates the myth that they chose 'the best actor' for the role. In fact, the actor they wanted was Caucasian, and that's what they got.

    Plastroncafe, re: Patel for Zuko

    by ebonic_plague

That's exactly why I think that Zuko's casting is more of a problem than Aang's. But most of the outrage is all about Aang being white, which I don't see being as big of a deviation from the original depiction in the cartoon as Patel as Zuko. It seems to me that this is more about NOT wanting to see white people cast than it is about casting to fit the characters from the cartoon. And since none of them were going to be Inuit anyway (let's be real), I don't see why it's such a huge disgrace to cast generic white people in the roles rather than equally-miscast generic brown people.

You're assuming they weren't given a fair shake. This is America. Everyone gets a fair chance. The casting agents, if they did their job properly, picked people who were best fits for the roles while also being better box office draws. The races were changed in this to be white, East Asian, and Indian looking. Its more multicultural than the cartoon was. Doesn't *that* give everyone a fair chance?

No. Get the fuck over it. And this whole idea that studios don't cast Asian-Americans because they don't make money.....if thats the case, does that mean its a racist agenda? It has nothing to do with the specific ethnicity, it just has to to with the fact that white-bread Brad Pitt-esque leads sell. Don't blame the studio. Blame YOU...the paying customers. If the public demanded films with more diverse leads, and those films became profitable, you can bet fuck thats what the studios would start pumping out.

Dude, what is your problem, you are making more racist statement and supositions about this than anyone involved with the film. Aang in the cartoon looks completely caucasian and even has blue eyes. All of the "races" in the show are a hodge-podge of features and characteristics. The skintones have a very limited pallet and the characters have various hair and eye colors. All of which I'm sure was specifically designed to not make them resemble any specific race in order to avoid crap like you are spouting off. Yes, obviously it all takes place in an asian inspired fantasy world but again it's just mix and match as to not specify a particular culture and especially not to make a specific culture look like the bad guys. The kid in the trailer looks exactly like the character in the cartoon. You are making complete assumptions on the race and ethinicity of the characters.
And Dragonball, come on. If you want to get on a high horse about other anime shows that take place in Japan even though the character designs look like 100% honky cracker white people thats fine but Dragonball, DBZ and DBGT don't take place on our earth, There is only on continent in Dragonball and Goku is an alien. He doesn't have to look asian at all. Granted the original story is based on a Chinese legend the show strayed away from that and stayed away from that early on. You are just projecting your own racial views on these properties.

    "Signs" is mediocre

    by dennismm

It has some very strong moments, but the twist is pathetic. The mother's last words tell her challenged brother to beat the alien to death? As if they couldn't have figured that out. An alien invades your home, you know it's hostile, you try to shoot it, stab it, beat it to death. No need for the prophetic last words of a woman squashed between a car and a tree.

Also, the whole "His lungs were closed, the poison didn't get in" thing was crap. Asthmatics generally can't breathe OUT; that's why they perform poorly in peak-flow tests. The poison would have gone in and stayed in, most likely. So that's two pieces of nonsense at the climax.

Maybe I'm too harsh, but for me those pretty much ruined the end of the picture.

The foundations of all "anime" character designs are based on the Disney classics animation which solely depicted caucasian people. The big eyes are just an exageration of style that developed but has it's roots in the Disney style. Like it or not most animecharacters are depicted as "white" whether or not they really are. Naruto from Naruto and Ichigo from Bleach are two main stream examples. They are Japanese characters but have absolutely no physical asian characteristics what so ever. So yes, most not all but most anime characters look like white people.

Christ read some details before expousing BS. THE large eyes copied from DISNEY was not a racial designation. THey were copied from BAMBI a FUCKING DEER! The large eyes were a way of expressing innocence. Whether you want to say Naruto being caucasian is a completely different argument. I would concede that. Shit if you want to go as far as thinking Ichigo as CAucasian I'll even throw that one in for you (but you do know it's called BLEACH for a reason dumbass). BUT TO blanket an entire art style from a couple of examples without looking at the story line or other clues of the anime is completely moronic. If the intent was to make Aang caucasian like the way you believe NAruto and Ichigo were made, then why didn't they give him blonde hair(he grew hair in a couple of episodes and it was black).

    by iseewhitepeople

YOu cannot just say blanket statements about an entire art form on either side. Many people argue that Cowboy Bebop should be all asian. I disagree. By looking at the names and other racial clues in character I would surmise they all could be played by mixed or completely caucasian actors. Last Airbender has a medievil/fantasy setting. It is completley different from Bebop and has racial clues that all point toward Asian. The dress, the hair color, the writing(it's straight Chinese, not a language based on Chinese but straight Chinese), the religious themes and on and on. Christ just look at how both the actors shown in this trailer have their eyebrows arched to give their eyes an "asian" look....i'm sorry but that is Soooo fucking wrong.

You are right about Bambi but the look and design of Snow White and Pinoccio were major influences that both Predate Bambi. Post Bambi Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella and Peter Pan also influenced the character design of anime. I'm not trying to throw down with you in the talkback but maybe it's you who needs to check their facts. I only used Naruto and Ichigo as examples and even said not all but most. There is a lot of anime and mange where the character designs are asian in physical characteristics but the over whelming majority is not. I used those characters as examples because unlike Cowboy Bebop those characters are specifically asain and Ichigo is Japanese but their traits are anglo. They don't have pink, blue or green hair or pink or yellow eyes or anything like that.As far as Aang goes I pointed out that that even though heavily asian influence the characters designs themselves are non race specific. Yes, Aang has black hair but he also has blue eyes. So what would you prefer a white kid that they make look a little more asian or an asian kid they make look more white?

That short was great. Also, M.Night deserves a chance with this. People bitch about him, but at least he's making a film based upon a pre-existing property. And I actually loved The Village, it's my second favorite film of his after Unbreakable. I even thought LITW was an interesting failure, which is more than I can say for most shit out there. The guy knows how to tell a story and BUILD SUSPENSE, something few directors today have any clue how to do.

I read Iseewhitepeople's post. He's right. Each nation is an elemental nation with their eye color matching their elements therefore their bending abilities. You don't see a person with gold or green eyes bending water. So you say he got the bending aspect wrong therefore his entire argument is wrong? How old are you 12? You want to affiliate eye color with racial markers when it is CLEARLY an elemental marker in which the CREATORS have said themselves in DVD extras. Yes Zuko and Iroh are heroes BUT THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES in the fire nation that are. SO the ENTIRE FIRE nation will be brown and BAD GUYS! Plus Zuko will not even be a good guy in the first movie. It's like you're trying to find any nitpicking excuse to make them white when you ignore the argument being made.

I deny it. Every person who is nutty for an anime show feels the same way about it as you do Airbender. You're all wrong. I'm glad you like your cartoon, but to say it's on par with Lord of the Rings, or better than Star Wars, is kind of retarded.

"when Yellow Face is still a problem"

    by smackfu

the elephant in the room, is that the people who have the real problem with 'yellow face' are the people WITH the 'yellow face'. Aka the asian animators who remove all asian characteristics from their drawings of asian characters. There is a whole plethora of asian art out there that depicts asians that *actually look asian* without being offensive or charicaturish. Yes, it's true kids, you can actually draw Asian people that are not only identifiable as asians, but you can even draw them specifically enough to tell a drawing of a chinese person from a drawing of a japanese person. Anime artists are fully capable of doing this, but instead choose to draw their 'Japanese' characters with distinctly white characteristics. But the real heart of the arguement we're having in this thread, is that you guys are argueing something you don't even really believe deep down inside. You don't really believe anime characters 'look asian'. Because if you do believe that, then how come you're not watching the Batman or Justice League cartoons and asking why all the characters look asian? Because deep down, you're just lying to yourself, and I suspect there is a certain measure of subconscious self-loathing involved.

    There ASB goes again...

    by bruce vain

    ...but I digress.

Sokitome and Iseewhite people are wrong about eye color. Eye color denotes lineage...not nation affiliation. Swampbenders have grey eyes (not unlike Aang's).

Perhaps this film should have had an all Asian cast (including Punjabis...since they are Asian as well ... technically) so that this TB string would never have come into existence.

I hate, hate seeing Asians acting like backwoods crackers in throwing down the race card. Maybe this country hasn't come as far along as I thought.

P.S. The kid playing Aang looks darn good in the role. But I'll admit that time will tell.

    by snarky2

"Yes Zuko and Iroh are heroes BUT THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES in the fire nation that are."

Well, I'll give it to you that I didn't watch the Avatar DVD extras (because, well I'm not 12). However, since you did I was wondering if you could explain the above statement. The "only" good fire benders? Really? Zuko's mom, the priest who helped them Jeong Jeong (who was part of the elder's who saved the day in the end)? How about all the kids Aang interacted with? Nope, I guess they're all evil and I just imagined it. Just like how I'm imagining an Indian film maker used Indian and Iranian actors to play the fire nation because it's really some kind of a white plot to make non-white people seem evil.

Yup, people like me are obviously the problem.

    In shock

    by armysmithaz

Saw the teaser a few days ago, just finished the first season. Splendid. I go to the theaters about 50 times a year, so this movie is definitely on my watchlist. That said certain movies suck. Transformers 2 started off nice but got boring about halfway through.
MNS is a decent film director, better a director than an actor, that said, he's talented enough to actually make a film, there in lies the power to cast a film. The film is made in hollywood, do you actually think the studio would allow him to cast an asian lead. It's not racist, its business. Money talks son, you dont like it dont watch it. Quit your crying and stop writing Iseewhitepeople. Mensa Number, who gives a fuck, your a bitch and now everyone knows it. And Signs fucking ruled. Quit dissing on it. The happening give it a c, but i still spent my money on it. As long as it has cool ass Matrix kung fu and the chase is on, I'll be happy.
As for the color of there eyes and the tans, Before photos don't show this and you don't know what he's doing.
The teaser looked good enough for me to watch the first season and then read all of this crap and then follow it up with a talkback.
Yo if someone comes across the script post that shit, i read that its a trilogy based on all three seasons.
By the way, if you post first that just means you nerdiest fuck here.

    Trailer in HD-Format

Ok, i'm quite advertising that page, but since i stumbled upon it, I just had to add that NewsFeed, and i never got disappointed in it
    http://www.hd-trailers.net/blog/feed/
Now I'm wondering how they're doing the World of Avatar: The last Airbender, as it seems quite accurate even to the Firenations Battleships.
But I certainly think it's gonna be way more better than CartoonNetworks Ben10-Movies(the first was only at an typical Cartoon-Episode-Level).
