STEPFATHER remake, featuring 100% less John Locke, gets a trailer!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. This trailer isn't brand-spankin' new, but I just came across it and figured there'd be some good discussion. For starters, who has seen the original film, starring Terry O'Quinn and, awkwardly, his penis? I saw the film growing up and thought it was okay and then more recently at the Drafthouse.
It's twisted and reeks of the '80s. I always thought a more interesting version of the story doesn't open with the stepfather wandering through the murder of his previous family, changing shaving his beard and changing his appearance. That would make it a mind game... is he or isn't he a psychotic killer?
Doesn't look like that's what the sequel is going for. It very much comes across as the original put through the DISTURBIA filter, with even more teen underwear models in the cast. They also seem to have decided to give away one of the best moments from the original transplanted into this movie in the below trailer.
As you can probably tell, I'm not exactly feeling this one. It looks professionally done, but bland. And I couldn't tell the difference between the stepfather and the original father, the two actors look so much alike. What do you folks think?

never seen the original though
-
O'Quinn's son is a buddy of mine. We went to school together. Look it up, he went to Franklin high school in Reisterstown. Anyway, really nice and down to earth dude. I remember that his son had bitching parties in high school ...cool family overall. Still in touch with em and still, very down to earth people!
-
Now that this is being remade, there is a solid chance that the original will finally get a decent DVD release. That's the silver lining of remakes... I can't imagine that fans of The Day The Earth Stood Still have any room to complain considering how well the original was treated as a result of the remake.
-
this was posted everywhere else like three days ago. i hate my life.
-
Are "bitching parties" kinda like AICN Transformers 2 TB's?
-
haha. too funny... sigh.... oh the hate of TF2 tbs! Also, I won't see any movie with leads that look like he was plucked from Stanton Island model agency.
-
Seems like him a lot in the way he is trying to act normal. I like the homage to the original with the line, "Who am I here?".
-
A: I disagree on the beginning of the original. I love the reveal of the dead family and knowing from the start what he is - and how he can change his identity.
B: Go to You Tube and type in Stepfather Terry O'Quinn trailer and you'll see that not only was the "Who am I here?" line in the trailer, it was kind of the entire framing device of the trailer. It's somewhat the catchphrase for the character, so not surprised the line is also in the remake trailer. -
Damn, that shower scene!!!
-
..where he was humping the mum while the daughter in the next room tried to drown out the sound by listening to Pat benatar?
God i miss the 80s -
Good for him.
-
He is at the height of his popularity. Why not just hire him again? He is fantastic of walking a line where you're not entirely sure if he is nice and sincere, or manipulative and evil. I think the movie would make more money at the box office with a recognizable star.
-
the original.Never seen it, but it sounds more interesting.
-
I know you've spent some time in surgrey, but still, welcome back !!
-
Terry O Quinn could still play this role. He owns it, as far as I'm concerned. And he's hot right now since he's John Locke. Fucking idiot producers.
-
Also love the out of nowhere and for no reason high school girl in the shower scene
-
I was a big fan of horror films and when my dad and I watched this together we were both very impressed by Terry's acting and I it was wonderful to see my dad do his impression when we'd be cleaning up the garage or some kind of mess, saying "What we need is a little ORDER AROUND HERE!" Also, I was a huge Benatar fan as well so having an obscure song from Seven the Hard Way included was kinda cool.Anyway, ever since that movie I was a big Terry fan because I felt his acting chops were great and never saw him in mainstream again til Young Guns. I don't want a remake because of the fond associations I have of it with my late father - BUT if it gives us a sweet DVD of the original - go for it - though I'll skip it.
-
this was up on comingsoon.net 2 days ago...get with it guys
-
I guess I've seen the movie now.

Does every remake of every horror/thiller movie made in the last ten years have the same cast? Seriously, I may be getting old but when I was a kid we had C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and yes...mmm...Jill schoelen in movies like this. I mean, the actors all had what's the word? Oh yeah, personality. They weren't always the prettiest, some even had flaws. Seriously. But you could tell them apart. I mean, I can watch Red Dawn and The Outsiders and tell which actors are which. These movies, not so much. Don't get me wrong, Amber Heard is smoking hot but it just all feels so antiseptic and plasticene. So vanila, like a J. Crew catalog. Are there some really good actors in any of these movies? There probably are but I don;t remember any, none stand out. We all rail on Shia, but at least the kids memorable and he stands out. BTW, Quint, the first scene of the original is supposedly exactly how John List acted when he chopped up his first family. Sat down and ate and everything, it's a nod to that and John Locke's performance I think is made all the more creepier BECAUSE of that first scene. I was a big fan of the original, haven' seen it in years and would be afraid to revisit it for fear of bad aging. I may though, instead of going to see this piece of shit.
-
Agreed w/your sentiments on the DVD. A proper release is long overdue. I think I remember reading something about there being rights issues with the release. But if they can remake it, they should be able to release it on DVD for crying out loud. That may be the only good thing to come out of this.
-
I never was a huge fan of the first one but I agree with snomusic - completely unnecessary remake. The first one was a well crafter low budget movie that works effectively - the original filmmakers deserve credit for that. Now along comes some lazy modern producers to plunder their hard work. Fuck that. Come up with your own ideas assholes.
Secondly, about the opening: to me it more in lines with Hitchcock's idea about suspense - something is much more suspenseful if the audience is privy to information that the characters in the film aren't. What you are talking about is a mystery - is he or isn't he a killer? Mysteries are cool, but it isn't suspense. This was a suspense thriller. -
I've always wondered what happened to that guy.
-
and is he really dead?
-
He looks like a douchebag. Note to producers: its real hard to get an audience involved in your movie when your main character looks and acts like an asshole. That said, Dylan Walsh's "No, no... who am I again here?" moment was very good. The only good thing in the trailer, the only moment that was interesting, the only moment that felt potentially scary. Amanda Heard in a bikini helps too, but... come on, this is like "Prom Night" level.
-
Now it all makes sense.
-
It kind of needs to be in there. It's kind of like the Hitchcock theory of suspense... it's more suspenseful when you know the bomb is ticking away out of sight and the characters have no idea it's there. I think the movie would be a lot more run of the mill if the audience was groping along in the dark with the daughter.
-
A young boy becomes a man at the hands of his stepmother while his father is away on business.
-
Beat me to the Hitchcock point.
-
Let's remake every movie ever made. What's old is new again! Joy!
-
He transforms his appearance in the bathroom, then starts walking down the stairs. You see one of the pictures on the wall is askew, then see a bloody handprint on the wall, then the full chaos of the first floor. How could anyone not love the way that was staged? This remake looks like it sucks. Why bother?
-
is what is called The Hook. It is nearly always in the opening scene of a Hollywood movie. If you don't have a hook in the first nine pages of your screenplay by a script-reader, it usually hits the round file without being finished.
-
...looks like Scarlett Johansson's HOTTER sister?
-
the original movie probably never would have been green-lighted with out a horror shock to hook the audience into the story early. And if you would have done the horror reveal without showing the identity of the killer, you're either tipping the audience off that who the killer is when he arrives in the story, or you'll be throwing the audience an intelligence-insulting red-herring which is something like you'd see on the Oxygen network or something.

I agree with the only good thing these new remakes are good for
by spectrebeeyatch
I hope they do that for Pelham 123. That was the only real reason why I was pumped it got remade.
-
I should probably watch it. That's basically what I've been doing. Everytime they remake an old horror movie, I go back and watch the old one. I didn't watch a lot of horror movies as a kid. I probably wasn't allowed but I never really tried because I was chicken anyway. Netflix only has Stepfather II listed on his page. Is that it?
-
Lucas doesn't have anything else going on, and he constantly wants to tinker with it and perfect it. Sure, you may say it is untouchable and that no one could step in those iconic roles, but a year ago you'd say the same thing about Star Trek, and people love the Star Trek remake. If and WHEN Star Wars gets made, the rules are simple. Lucas is executive producer and has veto power. Lucas is not allowed to direct or write the script.Fans will scream for a Whedon script, with Nolan, or Cuaron directing. And honestly, I'd line up to see that.
-
but man, it does look like disturbia
-
I don't want all of the character to be cocky asses. I got tired of that.
-
Duh. It's called "The Stepfather". You'd have to be a complete moron to go to a movie with no idea what it's about."Wow. This Hallmark movie is great! It shows the joy of a family! Wait.... what's he doing with that chainsaw?"Not gonna happen.
-
Must agree with "Richard Gere..." here. There's nothing interesting about movies where the very concept is set up as a big reveal halfway through the movie. Maybe it's interesting at the script reading stage, but once they start making posters and trailers, you're brewing up a big ol' pot of mediocrity. At best.
-
Another bland, watered-down, rip-off aimed at the female mall crowd. Clint Culpepper, have you no shame?
-
The Stepfather reality series.
-
That's what I thought about The Taking Of Pelham 123, and yet there's no souped-up, anamorphic DVD reissue of the original film. :(
-
it looks like butt.
-
No, Stepfather 2 was a mere shadow of the original - kinda suspenseful and fun to see Meg Foster's eyes reminding you of a Bonnie Tyler video the whole time - and there are more women in it where he seems kinda like the neighborhood pimp for a few minutes, lol. Anyway, see The Stepfather first.
-
Just because of this movie
-
Year One. Seriously that movie should have kicked ass, not suck ass.
-
Wasn't the first one rated R? Fuck me.
-
Harry and company need to shut up this trailer looks pretty good.
I now want to see this before I didn't care about it but had not seen the trailer.
Now I want to see it.... -
Are you? Just curious. Its quite all right if you are.

We're not the only people on this island and we all know it!!!

-
Of course, it is a remake of an 80s classic, so what else could it be? Still, at least it lacks that Markus moron who vomited out the TCM and Friday remakes.
-
the stepfather at all sympathetic. I don't think that will be a problem here.
-
an INSTA-FAIL!
-
This trailer looks too glossy (and reveals way too much), but still looks like a more than decent thriller. Nip/Tuck guy is a good choice as new Stepfather.

Both Stepfather and Stepfather 2 were surprisingly good!
by theycallmemrtibbs
I can remember back in the day when my cousin rented both of them on VHS. I was pissed because I wanted to watch the latest Friday the 13th.
To my surprise, Terry O' Quinn was scarier than Jason Vorhees! I'm not against a remake or anything, I just hope people go back and watch the original to see Terry's kick-ass performance.
That scene when he freaks out on his wife with the phone.... -
We get it.
-
and Walsh should be fun. At least a rental.
-
When that scene happened, it gave me chills.
-
I'm a stepfather and I have never tried to kill anyone! Ever! Once again, here we go with the step-hating media! Why not make a movie where the step-father protects his step-daughter from her crazy family! I'd pay to see that! Arrrrrggggghhhhhh! Happy Father's Day, btw....
-
starring Ryan Reynolds and Ellen Page!
-
the sequel to "Nobody's Fool" and it plays a lot frickin' weirder.
-
The Stepfather has one wonderful element: Terry O'Quinn's performance.
-
But I also haven't been a prick like you in my entire life...
-
hmm. I'll have to wait to see the first one then. Don't know why Netflix doesn't have it.
-
My apologies man, I wasn't trying to insult you, as I very poorly tried to communicate at the end of my last post. Though come on, you've got to admit, a statement along the lines of "All you guys need to shut up!!" does sound somewhat immature (ironic considering the talkbacks are awash in immaturity). Plus, I don't think there are many people here that think this looks good. Its obviously tailor made for teenagers, so based on your post, you sounded like you may be one of the youngin's running around here. And like I said, there's nothing wrong with that, and Im not trying to insult. But, I don't think this looks good (well, it *looks* good; doesn't look like it will *be* good).
-
featuring a criminally terrible remake of "Drive" by The Cars. That's one of those songs that should never be redone, as the late Benjamin Orr put his indelible stamp on it.
-
This looks completely absurd. But I do feel a little sorry for the good stepfathers out there who will feel a little stung when these trailers pop up on TV as they sit at home with their stepchildren. Awwwkwarrrd.

TOM BODET hasn't done that for a while, so I will do it for him. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

a heavy metal soundtrack. a totally beserk freak out from the main star at the end. some good fake blood. and at least 3 killings, one or two nosey neighbors, a beautiful woman who comes onto the stepfather and scruffy the janitor.
-
"buckle up for safety"
great films. there is only one stepfather and he is played by TERRY O'QUINN.
i am not anti remake as a general rule but fuck this film.Jerry Blake is the only stepfather I am interested.
why can't they just leave me alone...we are gonna keep this family together YOU HAD BETTER BELIEVE IT. -
I hope it's a bout a guy who gets drunk and hits on his step daughter.
-
I heard it's a horror classic. Unfortunately, I guess it was only a matter of time before they decided to re-shit it. Oh well, you know the $$$ scrounging is inevitable with this piece of shit state in filmmaking. What really gets me is the upcoming NOES remake. Now that will suck a dead donkey dick!
-
Because Quint's right, the real dad looks exactly like Dylan Walsh.
-
I've had it.
-
Oh well, at least it improves our chances of actually gettng the original on DVD. Man, Terry O'Quinn was great in that movie.
-
I always thought the original was a tight little thriller, and as said over and over here, Terry O'Quinn is beyond eerie in it. The sequel? Not so much.
-
are both fine actors. But every comment regarding this remake is right on target. BTW, what's Joe Rubin been up to lately..?
-
When they first announced that they were making the remake I went to the IMDb and saw the (at the time) short list of people they'd cast...I saw Christopher Meloni's name on there and thought, "YES! He will be an excellent psycho!" Turns out he's not playing the new Stepfather, so I totally lost interest.
-
Who's gonna step up to the plate and announce a remake of The Hidden? That Kyle MacLachlan/Michael Nouri flick was fantastic fun.
-
Whedon is not allowed to touch Star Wars. That guy is a douchebag. The ONLY thing he was involved with that was good was Toy Story and he needed help on that. I promise you he'll go away soon.
-
This new guy's limp delivery of the "Who am I here?" line proves that.
