The CW Footage From VAMPIRE DIARIES And The New MELROSE PLACE!!

Published at:  Jun 16, 2009 4:23:29 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Remember how, just as “Angel” was getting completely fricking amazing, The CW’s ancestor The WB cancelled it? Yeah, me too.

Thanks again, The WB!

Some footage from the CW’s fall series “The Vampire Diaries,” which comes to us from Kevin Williamson, creator of “Dawson’s Creek”:

Some footage from the new “Melrose Place,” from “Smallville” showrunners Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer:

Stephanie Jacobsen, fetching star of “Battlestar Galactica: Razor” and “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” appears to be a new “Melrose” regular, if that’s any incentive.

You know what else The WB couldn't be bothered to greenlight?

Being Australian I always find the Australian accent distracting, not fuckin-Bale-distracting, but distracting enough for Jesse's character to be a minor annoyance (she didn't have many lines though), but I think I prefer her to that guy in House and I definitely prefer her to that "Australian" in Eureka. Really Flight Of The Conchords nailed it... it's an evil version of the New Zealand accent.

Seriously, this fucking is Twilight The Series. And as dull as that piece of shit is, at least it was only 2 hours long. Now they're gonna drag the love story out over seasons? Ugh! Vomit. Sadly though, this will probably become the network's top-rated show because the pre-teen girls love that Twilight shit. Seriously, can't anyone come up with something original to do with vampires? Can vampires only be tortured and brooding high school kids or detectives. Just once I'd like to see a vampire who's just like a chef or a postal employee and that's it.

    by ryanbraun14

this vampire craze is out of hand. I've been re-watching buffy and have realized Faith could never sustain her own show. She is unlikable and her cocky attitude and the way she talks is not compelling enough to have a show devoted to her. A ripper show could work, especially with the way buffy ended. One thing about buffy--whedon has TERRIBLE taste for music. All these bands that play on the show are terrible and are not fitting songs to dance to. However, season one had me wondering why i liked this show so much... but the finale of season three, which is the best season finale ever made, reaffirmed why i fell in love with the show.

    by oisin5199

No matter how you look at it. Angel's season 6 would have been amazing with LA brought into hell, Wesley all ghost-y, and Gunn vamped. Besides the fact that Supernatural had nothing to do with Angel being cancelled, there's absolutely no comparison between the two shows. Angel worked on a completely different level that Supernatural doesn't even attempt. I like Supernatural, but it's no Angel.

Vampire Diaries predates Twilight by a decade

    by bellam

At least. Really loved the books when I was a kid. Seems like they've kept a lot of the elements true. Except everyone's hair color. Also in the books the town was Fell's Church and was very much a character in itself - the name change seems pointless. For reference, Diaries was never so emo as Twilight. It was written in a time before feelings were this dread curse suffered by adolescents. Looks like they might have emo'd it up, which is sad. For a tween series (written in a time before 'tweens' actually existed), it was pretty dark and violent. The books also had a lot of petty highschool viciousness like something out of 'Mean Girls'; and a nice mystery stretched out over the first three books. The fourth book was great, too.The sad thing is they'll probably make it all too pretty and trite. I remember it being harsh and sad, nothing groundbreaking but at least emotionally honest.Sorry I don't mean to actually care about it but I kind of do. The books were my favorite summer/sick day reads for a good four years.

Of course Angel season 6 would have been awesome. However, when they stopped Angel, later on the CW needed a show of that genre. Enter Supernatural that has seriously been kicking ass. And that's coming from me who was a big Angel fan and never vowed to watch something from WB again after they cancelled it. I am glad I gave Supernatural a chance at that time.

OK, I'll give this a chance

    by there are twelve models

I guess I have to consider myself a fan of the Vampire Diaries books since I own them and have reread them many times -- the books have both good and bad points. They are, indisputably, superior to the Twilight series in all respects. Whether the TV series will match up is another question. The preview convinces me they've bothered to faithfully ape some plot elements, which is a good sign, but hasn't shown whether they're taking the characters seriously. Elena particularly was a "queen bee", a strong person and a fighter, something we don't see enough to judge in the trailer. I can forgive all the haircolor changes, character additions and extraneous plot details. Just get the characters right and the central premise -- the love triangle -- will follow.

For the people who keep ragging on Twilight and any other series where vampires are the focus of romance, you must be ignoring twenty years of Dark Shadows on TV and the 1931 Dracula because that shit goes all the way back. Twilight itself is garbage, but give me a fucking break. It's not a fucking end of the world situation if some entertainment is aimed at women. So stop your douchbag whinery pretending like it is and shut the hell up.

    "Vamp Diaries"

    by my pretty pony

I'll give this show a chance because it's "Supernatural's" lead in. I'm actually hoping that the show is good and that it does well so it can be a worthy companion for SN. "Melrose Place" looks like absolute crap, though. I still can't believe that The CW had an open slot on Friday nights and could've paired "Reaper" w/ "Smallville", but instead chose to give that timeslot to reruns of freaking "Top Model". They also canceled a solid, funny show like "Privileged" (which actually suits their target audience) in favor of crap like "90210" and "Melrose Place" remakes. I think that once "Smallville" and "Supernatural" are over, they'll be in serious trouble and The CW won't last much longer.

When vampires are able to walk around during day...

    by theghostwholurks

They completely lose their interest. What's the point, if these immortal, all-powerful monsters AREN'T killing everyone in sight 24/7? What's holding them back from doing whatever the hell they want, whenever they want???At least with sunlight and the other classic weaknesses, vampires had to be clever to survive and there was an excuse for them not sucking the planet dry or putting every human in servitude. Shows like this or Twilight, though, just make obvious how stupid and lame vampires are minus any serious threat to their existence. They're boring and come across as little more than pansies, tiptoeing through the centuries in fear of the weaklings who they kill on a daily basis.Really, the concept makes no sense at all. At least Blade was the ONLY Daywalker and hated everything about vampires, explaining why he didn't go to town on humanity. What excuse do the protagonists of Twilight or this lame show have? Their own personal self-control and goodness??? That's like asking a human to refrain from drinking water... see how long your "self-control" will keep you alive.

TVD vamps have tons of weaknesses.

    by there are twelve models

They just aren't apparent in the preview. Yes, sunlight is one -- it kills them. This becomes extremely important in the books. VD vamps are way more faithful to traditional vampire lore than most recent series, from Anne Rice to anything else. All this carping about vampires without weaknesses does not apply to the Vampire Diaries series and is rooted in ignorance and understandable hatred of the execrable Twilight.

Besides that, poofing into flame at the merest gleam of sunlight is NOT A CLASSIC VAMP WEAKNESS. It was invented by Hollywood sometime in the 50s. Traditionally, and in literature, sunlight did not affect vampires at all except to slightly weaken their evil powers. Coppola's Dracula walks around London midday because it is, get this, faithful to the book.

I think all this criticism goes back to, yet again, the craving for most readers on this site for action packed vampire warriors on motorcycles. Sorry, that's just not the focus of this series. Go watch Terminator 4 if that appeals to you... it's obviously a better fit.

Actually, while the Vampire Diaries have a similarity to Twilight, in that it's a romance between a human and a vampire, that is where the similarity ends. These vampires do feed on humans. They aren't necessarily "good". Also, the Vampire Diaries books were released in the 80s, so if anyone ripped off the idea, it was Meyer.

Meanwhile, re-start Dresden Files for GROWN-UPs.

    by crankyoldguy

You want cool vampire variations, demons, otherworldly creatures, evil spirits, wizards, warlocks and more, plus the genuine human element. Dresden Files. Watch the dozen on Hulu from 2007-2008. Casting was pretty good, too. Though copy Murphy's supposed to be a tiny, tough blonde and reporter Susan a dark-haired Latina, not other-way around somewhat. Also the series suffered from not enough weirdness. A Dresden Files tried again should be more Supernatural or Whedon-stuff hard-boiled detective style. Again, a show from Grown-Ups that Teens -smart ones - can enjoy, too. Funny, outside of a Smallville, which I say is not teen, I hate most teen-slated shows - Gossip Girl crap and the like. Better to shut TV off and read a book. But shows for kidlets - pre-teen and younger, films like that too, I have no problem with and often find mildly amusing in their viewer context.
