Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars filming this November?!?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Can it really be true? Is JOHN CARTER OF MARS actually going to happen after 70+ years of failed attempts by everyone from Bob Clampett to Ray Harryhausen, John McTiernan, Jon Favreau, Robert Rodriguez and Kerry Conran? Looks likely.
According to this story in the Salt Lake Tribune it looks like Andrew Stanton and Disney have picked Utah as their location for Mars (and presumably the American South for the Civil War stuff) and they're aiming to spend roughly 45 days there between November '09 and July '10. The article mentions that Lake Powell, made famous in Planet of the Apes, is one of the many locations around the state that will be utilized.
If you've read Edgar Rice Burroughs' books, I think this should make you very, very happy. I'm dying to see what a live action Andrew Stanton film looks like and can't wait to finally see these amazing sci-fi/fantasty/adventure stories realized on the silver screen! What about you?

Interesting

Waddya know....
-
stop hogging the first and get reading those books.
-
we don't need any more dumbed down movies for moronic teens.
-
Just kidding.
-
Carpenter of Mars where Carpenter rules Mars and Kurt Russell and Jamie Lee Curtis team up to depose him using cheesy, stop-motion effects. That would be rad.
-
Wasn't Harry producing this?
-
I'm sure it will be shelved before then, unless some other Martian movie comes out before it and does huge at the boxoffice.
Would also love to see a big budget Pellucidar flick again too. -
Ruining roles intended for white guys everywhere he can.
-
Yes, I'd love to see Pixar take on harder-edged, PG-13 action-adventure. That probably wouldn't make sense from a financial standpoint, but maybe if they get the right property ...
-
Make it happen.
-
Drinking beer and embarrassing his brother with his redneck shenanigans.
-
The super-genius Pixar animator/director who gave the world "Finding Nemo" and "Wall-E."
-
Any word on his next project?
I suspect after the losses of Sky Captain he's through, but I would expect him to at least show up doing SFX for somebody else's movies. -

Is HARRY KNOWLES still producing this? We never hear anything on

Thomas Haden Church...is Tars Tarkas? http://preview.tinyurl.com/m64ef5
-
i mean, you will see mountan dew displays with john carter on them soon... total fx bonanza
-
...and as of yet, Pixar can seem to do no wrong. After Wall-E and Finding Nemo, I'd be interested to see what Stanton can do with live action. If Lassetter, another Pixar genius, is also producing, then this could be really, really good.
-
what the f are talking about?
-
Is Lord Bale still attached to this flick? (according to some previous rumours, he was), he'll be a great John Carter because he is so FUCKING PROFESSINAL!!!
ALL HAIL LORD BALE. -
I always have to mess up some minor detail!! FUCKING PROFESSIONAL!!!!
fucking amateur -
Yeah, this isn't gonna generate any controversy at all.

Don't Dumb It Down For Kids Please
by elvispresleehorsleyharveyoswaldoprahwinf
NEEDS TO BE PG13 AT LEAST
Make Martian blood purple or whatever but leave in the piles of corpses please.
I remember the sword fights in these books as being epic and bloody. It seemed like John Carter was always fighting hundreds of opponents at once.
-
They're making this with a totally nude Dejah Thoris (or is it Deja?)They'll probably cast Kiera Knightly and ask her to bring her King Arthur harness.
-
He'd be the perfect John Carter right down to not having to fake a southern accent. He can easily pull off the intense fighting and would look good doing it. He's my choice.
-
This bodes not well.
-
I'm concerned this will be very PG. I fear it will be like the Highlander animated series, only live-action.
-
If he is I'm skipping it. His screenplays for Kavalier and Clay were awful (he can't even adapt his own book). Even his spider-man 2 script was uneven. Please wait and get a better writer
-
While I think the previous poster is right, and Church will voice the green Martian warrior Tars Tarkas, another possibility is a live action role as Kantos Kan, the red Martian warrior who John Carter befriends.
Just a thought. -
... seemed to be some talkbackers' fondest hope -- comic book/pulp adaptations, only with piled-on nudity and gore.
I think a rating of "PG" would be organically natural to a Barsoom film project; this type of material is perfect for the bright nine-year old we all know (or the one we lovingly maintain within ourselves). Why deprive kids of the magic?
(Having said that, I also can see Matthew McConaghey as John Carter.) -
Is this Dejah Thoris? http://tinyurl.com/lh6hsp
-
If you're going to do another adaptation, at least adapt something that isn't so well known that it's completely unsurprising.
-
I woulda said Bill Bob but he's gettin on a bit.
-
I thought this was going to be a Pixar bit? What happened with that?
-
Jar Jarkas the butt monkey of mars
-
... who Stanton hires as cinematographer.
-
Why is it Harry writes at length about where he went to lunch, but hasn't once spoken publicly about his aborted attempt to make this film? What do you think readers here are more interested in?
-
I was hoping it would look like those oil paintings. I doubt it will even come close to the scale of escapism that Avatar is, cause let's face it... Avatar is the John Carter Of Mars of our generation. It's future is based on whats out now, not what was out when Rice made this. Pixar supposed to have balls big shiney steel balls. why not CGI why not the look of Franks paintings. Such a shame. I mean there is a real chance to showcase that style and beauty in motion now. Watch James use the Frank Oil painting stuff in his segment for the Heavy Metal remake. And then cry realizing it could have been used for this. PG aint John Carter, pg13 aint john carter. They are naked. Hate to say it but that 300 watchman dude would have been a better house for this. If only you could convince him to abandon the MTV styled slow mo shots.

...for tomorrow you may be in Utah.
Utah is absolutely the best place to film this thing. The talent pool for extras should be awesome too. About 80% of the population is expecting to be Gods of their own planet someday. Very sci-fi/fantasy. -
John Carter must run 20 feet with each stride like the badass he is.
-
The article doesn't mean to infer that they're shooting the entire movie in 45 days flat. It simply meant they'd be filming in Utah for 45 days of outdoor exteriors, simulating Mars/Barsoom, at which point I'm sure they'll be shifting inside for major soundstage set filming. So it bodes just fine.
-
Here's another article on it from today's Coming Attractions. Looks like SilverFox is now possibly Dejah Thoris...http://tinyurl.com/mhvl4j
-
You know the terrible thing about this on the whole. There was a chance here to make some real art with this property. To advance the digital medium, to tell a daring mature adult story with it. Trump that not just for kids horn. Beowulf doesn't even compare. I think about those cartoon movies like Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, Wizards and American Pop. Experimental, Adult, Art. John Carter as a live action is so typical. It would take more work to make it in CGI and make it look like Frank's art in motion. It's a shame.. Almost any studio would have decided on a live action version over CGI, because it would actually involve some real talent to match the preconceived fan perceptions of that world faithfully. Also no nudity or gore. God forbid...
-
...and whatever happened to Harry Knowles' 'John Carter of Mars'?
-
You know you want to see that
-
What. The. Fuck. This is NOT AT ALL Disney material.
-
...a big HAHAHAHAHAHA!I love those Pixar guys, especially their genius, visionary short movies. But some feature films like FINDING NEMO and THE INCREDIBLES are waaaaay overrated and pretty much boring. Also, the first half of WALL*E is a masterpiece, after that the film fell flat.Monsters, Inc. also wasn't that good.

Variety confirms it, fool. -
Silverfox as Dejah Thoris?!?...
http://tinyurl.com/me6nvz
hmmm.... After looking at that, think I might go slip one into the wife.. cheers. -
This is going to be BIG.
-
This does not include the weeks in front of a green screen and possibly other exotic locales.
-
John Carter described himself as being able to pass for "twenty-five to thirty years of age." So a twenty-eight-year-old is fine.
-
How do I do line breaks and stuff like that? I'm still new here.
