Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars filming this November?!?

Published at:  Jun 12, 2009 7:43:46 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Can it really be true? Is JOHN CARTER OF MARS actually going to happen after 70+ years of failed attempts by everyone from Bob Clampett to Ray Harryhausen, John McTiernan, Jon Favreau, Robert Rodriguez and Kerry Conran? Looks likely.

According to this story in the Salt Lake Tribune it looks like Andrew Stanton and Disney have picked Utah as their location for Mars (and presumably the American South for the Civil War stuff) and they're aiming to spend roughly 45 days there between November '09 and July '10. The article mentions that Lake Powell, made famous in Planet of the Apes, is one of the many locations around the state that will be utilized.

If you've read Edgar Rice Burroughs' books, I think this should make you very, very happy. I'm dying to see what a live action Andrew Stanton film looks like and can't wait to finally see these amazing sci-fi/fantasty/adventure stories realized on the silver screen! What about you?

JCoM role for Thomas Hayden Church

    by jeff dee

While I think the previous poster is right, and Church will voice the green Martian warrior Tars Tarkas, another possibility is a live action role as Kantos Kan, the red Martian warrior who John Carter befriends.

    R-rated children's movies...

    by vlad the inhaler

... seemed to be some talkbackers' fondest hope -- comic book/pulp adaptations, only with piled-on nudity and gore.

I think a rating of "PG" would be organically natural to a Barsoom film project; this type of material is perfect for the bright nine-year old we all know (or the one we lovingly maintain within ourselves). Why deprive kids of the magic?

(Having said that, I also can see Matthew McConaghey as John Carter.)

    Should be Frank'ized CGI

    by thepilgrim

I was hoping it would look like those oil paintings. I doubt it will even come close to the scale of escapism that Avatar is, cause let's face it... Avatar is the John Carter Of Mars of our generation. It's future is based on whats out now, not what was out when Rice made this. Pixar supposed to have balls big shiney steel balls. why not CGI why not the look of Franks paintings. Such a shame. I mean there is a real chance to showcase that style and beauty in motion now. Watch James use the Frank Oil painting stuff in his segment for the Heavy Metal remake. And then cry realizing it could have been used for this. PG aint John Carter, pg13 aint john carter. They are naked. Hate to say it but that 300 watchman dude would have been a better house for this. If only you could convince him to abandon the MTV styled slow mo shots.

Trancer, 45 days is LOCATOIN shooting...

    by big dumb ape

The article doesn't mean to infer that they're shooting the entire movie in 45 days flat. It simply meant they'd be filming in Utah for 45 days of outdoor exteriors, simulating Mars/Barsoom, at which point I'm sure they'll be shifting inside for major soundstage set filming. So it bodes just fine.

    I'm still pissed

    by thepilgrim

You know the terrible thing about this on the whole. There was a chance here to make some real art with this property. To advance the digital medium, to tell a daring mature adult story with it. Trump that not just for kids horn. Beowulf doesn't even compare. I think about those cartoon movies like Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, Wizards and American Pop. Experimental, Adult, Art. John Carter as a live action is so typical. It would take more work to make it in CGI and make it look like Frank's art in motion. It's a shame.. Almost any studio would have decided on a live action version over CGI, because it would actually involve some real talent to match the preconceived fan perceptions of that world faithfully. Also no nudity or gore. God forbid...
