Herc’s Seen Saturday’s Last PUSHING DAISIES Ever!!

Published at:  Jun 13, 2009 2:33:47 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Pushing Daisies 1.13 FAQ

What’s it called?
“Kerplunk.”

Who’s responsible?
Teleplay is credited to Gretchen J. Berg & Aaron Harberts (“Bad Habits,” “Frescorts”).

What says ABC?
“When one-half of the synchronized swimming duo The Aquadolls (guest stars Nora Dunn, Wendie Malick) meets with an unfortunate end that may have been murder-by-shark, the Darling Mermaid Darlings get a chance to come out of retirement at a traveling water circus. But the surviving Aquadoll may know a little too much about Lily's past. Meanwhile, Ned, Chuck and Emerson go undercover to solve the murder. Guest starring in "Kerplunk" are Mackenzie Smith as young Lily (5 years), Avery Stevens as young Lily (11 years), Giselle Gail Gaines as young Vivian (6 years), Josh Hopkins as Shane Trickle, Nora Dunn as Doris, Wendie Malick as Coral, Joey Slotnick as Jimmy Neptune, Michael James McDonald as Galveston Gus and Wilson Cruz as Sid Tango.”

What is ABC not telling us?
Michael James McDonald turns out to be Groundlings vet Michael McDonald, who spent more than a decade playing the manchild Stuart on Quincy Jones’ abysmal SNL knockoff “MADtv.”

The big news?
“This is a Game Changer,” Chuck tells Ned mid-episode. Then Chuck does something Emerson deems “despicable.”

Does it feel like a finale?
It kinda does, actually, as we do get what would have been something of a game changer, as well as “The Intrepid Cow,” a knock at Emerson’s door and all manner of hints pointing at what awaited our main characters had the series continued.

Do Ned and Chuck touch one last time in this final episode?
They do not.

Does George Hamilton return?
Not this week. And so we are reminded that the series leaves us with loose threads aplenty.

What’s great?
The CGI means by which Doris is suddenly dispatched. The homage to the license plate from “Jaws.” “Touch her before she talks back! Touch her touch her touch her!” Olive, Emerson and Ned’s matching Team Darling outfits. (Remember when Jim Rockford’s most extravagant undercover costume was a cowboy hat?) The big ending.

What’s not so great?
No more flesh-and-blood Ned and Chuck after tonight, and their Marvel comic adventures don’t begin till autumn.

How does it end, spoiler-boy?
With Digby, pushing through a field of daisies.

10 p.m. Saturday. ABC.

I remember one of the producers was going to continue this show in some way such as novel, comic, or etc. Anybody know for sure?

    Comic Book

    by incomplete gamer

Herc mentions in his review that the Marvel comic won't come out until the fall. Not sure if they'll do anything beyond that. But this ending makes me sad. I do like that it wraps things up, I just wish there was more time to properly end this fantastic show.

The last episode is great. Not really sure about the hastily produced wrap up at the end though. I'd rather it went out on the game changing cliff-hanger.

    This episodes ending is rushed

    by spooky2k

I really enjoyed this episode of pushing daisies but when it came time to end it, they just walloped a bunch of CG and voiceover together.

That was my biggest problem with the show - whenever the actors came close to anything that resembled 'meaty acting', we would cut awayto a silent scene with the characters all talking and the announcer would say 'they were all very distraught and eventually talked it through. Next day Ned rose to the sound of...'. I know it's storybook story telling, but TV/FILM is a VISUAL medium. Let the actors show distraught, sadness, loneliness, jealously and love in stead of having someone read out their emotions.

That's because the ending had to be done in post-production. The episode had already been filmed by the time the cancellation was announced.

    by drave117

And so ends my favorite television program of the past decade. They did the best they could with how little time they had to wrap things up. As fitting an end as we could have hoped for, given the circumstances. Now, when that full series box set comes out, tell everyone you know to buy it, and maybe the pie-maker will touch this series and bring it back to life, and hopefully a reality show will die instead.

"...was an ad for The Batchelorette"

    by big jim

That was a very funny ad. When they announced that during the show real couples would propose on the air, I laughed and laughed and laughed. Desperate marketing ploys for reality tv make me giddy; can't wait to see what Joel McHale makes of it on next week's The Soup.If I ever get around to getting a Blu-ray player, Pushing Daisies will be among the first series I buy in that format.

    "Where the Himbo?"

    by big jim

I loved Chuck's fake surprise-reaction, as well as her joy at seeing her aunts in the reflection of the ladle. Also, Olive's being tough with Cora who was at least a foot taller, and her attempts to duplicate Sid Tango's movements. Too bad they didn't find a reason to have Olive wear the mermaid outfit again.

    by atomica

I'm truly going to miss this show desperately. Brian Fuller is a mad genius. It sucks dead monkey balls that not enough people enjoyed and watched the show enough to keep it going. And I really enjoyed the last episode. Thanks for my favorite show of the past 1 year, 8 months, 12 days, 13 hours and 36 minutes of my life. ;)

    by chaztastic

I also liked the way they could end it. At least they attempted to tie up some of the characters story lines as best as possible. Can't wait for the comic book series. Hope it's as well done as Buffy season 8. And who knows, maybe like "Firefly" it will return in some form in the future? We can only hope.

"Banana hammock" The Darlings' synchronized training when they were at the Pie Hole. Chuck's AWFUL disguise in the control booth. The Sid Tango dance synchronized with the opening/closing shark gate.

    Really?

    by jsm1978

This was a good episode? I have only seen a few episodes of this show and thought it was decent (though the storybook/narrator gimmick was a little grating at times)... but I thought this ep was fairly weak. The cgi... "They say you can't get away with murder, but I did"... Though maybe I'd have enjoyed it more if the sound wasn't screwed up in the broadcast. I don't know if it was just my broadcaster or what, but the dialogue was quiet so I had to turn the volume way up, and then the music would be blaring.

JAM, Daisies is a serialized show...

    by lenny nero

...so you should have probably seen more than "a few episodes" to get maximum enjoyment.

Also, I had the same sound problem with the episode. Are you Bay Area-based? Otherwise, it would seem to be the episode's fault and not the broadcaster's.

    by writefromleft

When the episode screened at the Cinerama Dome as part of Paleyfest, the audience roared with laughter during the shark scene. I don't think I've heard an audience laugh that hard since Monty Python's Meaning of Life.
