Soldiers!! Blue Screens!! An Evil Looking Compound!! Two Spy Shots From Filming THE EXPENDABLES !!

Lensman sent in a few snapshots from filming on THE EXPENDABLES.
The pics pretty much speak for themselves, although I'm curious about one thing. Kinda thought green screen was all the rage these days - interesting to see 'em using blue here. Why is that? Cause it's night/different lighting requirements and what not? Has blue screen not been completely supplanted by green?

Blue and Green screen are used for a variety of reasons, but one of the main reasons here I assume is because most of the actors/extras are dressed in green military fatigues which makes it difficult to key out in post...

At least that's what I've read. Odd they didn't go green in this situation - as that's gonna take a lot of lights to light. Maybe they figure they'll still have to rotoscope and blue is just there as a guideline?

Can't use red with a human against it because our skin colour pigment contains red. Everyone would turn grey when you tried to key it out. They used in Predator because it was a red figure running through a green landscape. Just think polar opposites.

With so much GREEN in the clothing, you can't key out GREEN without getting holes in the people too.

Also some matte/composting programs are designed for blue. At least that's how was it years ago. I want to say Ultimatte was designed around blue, but I'm not 100% sure and I really don't feel like looking it up.

I'm thinking that maybe... just maybe... the blue screen might be used in this particular case because of all those muscle bound soldiers wearing green (and red turbans?) Could be, I don't know if anyone mentioned it, just wanted to point it out. Plus I don't think the red turbans look very good with the green outfit, although I could swear that in the foreground the guy with the red turban is also in blackface.

Where is all this rating argument coming from. This was always to be a hard R, according to this site, wasn't it? Did I just make that up or is this what we've been told over an over? Why all of a sudden are we debating it? Sly never confirmed on his website that it was PG-13, whoever said that is just trying to rile people up. Believe me, all and any news on this movie gets top priority on this site cuz Harry likes sweaty Sly sac. It's a hard R like the last Rambo.

I can already see this being set up for The Expendables to be blow up a shitload of Soldiers and have them flying around in every direction in slow-motion Commando and the A-team style.

doesn't really matter so long as it's a whole colour and the lighting is done correctly. Orange chroma key is my favourite but you hardly ever see that used anymore.

There are many different reasons to do one or the other. I've seen a lot of people who are doing outside shoots use bluescreen because the color won't reflect all nasty on the set and or actors and will imitate the reflection of light better that comes from an atmosphere. Greenscreen is used a lot more on indoor shoots, and is easier to key out but harder to light. I'm guessing they chose Bluescreen here because of the outdoor setting of the shot, plus there is a lot of green in the shot already. There isn't a lot of natural blue in the shot so it is easier to pull a key off of. Essentially.

Rock would be great but he doesnt do action movies anymore, like how Kurt Russell doesnt do ensemble movies anymore, or live how JCVD only cares about story--see what I'm getting at? Basically a PC way of saying "Sly, Im too good for this shit!" Where as, that Steve Kasan guy wants to be in it, has the build to be in an action movie, and has better acting chops than wife-beat, country-singing Seagal, who also turned it down.
