NYTimes: LETTERMAN To Stick With CBS At Least Till 2012!!

No one knows how long Jay Leno will last at 10 p.m. over at NBC, but David Letterman – who just beat “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” for the first time Tuesday night – will continue hosting CBS’ “The Late Show” at least until August 2012, according to New York Times late-night TV maven Bill Carter.
As expected, Letterman agreed to a reduced license fee for the extension, not a big deal for one of the richest men in television. Not only has Letterman reportedly been getting north of $30 million annually for “The Late Show,” he’s still reaping the syndication rewards of Worldwide Pants’ megahit “Everybody Loves Raymond.”

but watching him fake laugh at everything Eddie Murphy said last night (only some of it was actually funny) makes me think 11:30 will eventually force him to completely homogenize himself. Conan's jokes are definately better, but Dave is a more interesting personality, in my opinion. I'm betting a year from now David will get crankier and edgier and Conan will get more and more bland. I'll stick with Conan for the time being though.

Letterman will outlive Leno, guaranteed, Quadruple bypass and all. Leno is not a fan of comedy, and was in it for the money from the beginning (to finance his car collection). Letterman's legacy has been defined by the thousands of comics who he has influenced (Stewart, O'brien, etc.) Letterman's show will outlast Leno's amateur 10 o'clock show on NBC, guaranteed. I was expecting Jimmy Fallon to either get fired or get better by now. I don't know if you guys saw it but the interview with Paul Simon was painful to watch. He had his back to Jimmy for most of it and Steve Martin basically did the interview. And Jimmy kept lurching over the desk to try to get in on the conversation. He just doesn't seem to get that stars come on to promote and talk about themselves. It's not a first date. If someone says they did something he has to say "me too" and starts telling his own anecdote. Someone's gonna punch him in the face or walk out. I just know it. -

Seriously, I have no problem with any American going into a voting booth and voting their own way -- hey, that's Democracy in action, right? And I have no problem on the various NEWS channels with the assorted talking heads doing their bit, from both sides of the aisle.But during the latter part of the Bush years -- and DEFINITELY during this last election -- Letterman just decided he would be the crankly of Leftist fuck he's become on TV, to the point that he thinks REPEATEDLY making fun of Palin's teenage daughter counts as humor. Yet funny thing about Dave -- when Biden's daughter was accused of coke use recently (and an ex friend was trying to peddle the tape of her doing her blow), you didn't see Dave making fun of her, now did you? This comes on top of the fact that he became unhinged when McCain cancelled that one appearance and Letterman felt the need to cry about it every night till McCain showed up and apologized -- which frankly probably cost McCain a few votes for sucking up to Letterman that way.I'm actually old enough to remember when Letterman was on NBC during the DAY and starting out. He was off-beat and somewhat funny, but frankly he also never recovered from the NBC snub of picking Leno as the TONIGHT SHOW host. Frankly, Letterman needs to watch out -- the younger, hipper crowd that weren't "old farts" that didn't like Leno, so they wanted LATE NIGHT instead, are very likely to migrate over to Conan anyway just for him being younger and hipper and more fun. So, I expect Letterman's numbers to start showing an attrition over the course of the year anyway...

You and about 3 or 4 other people(perhaps?) here need to look up this funny little word called "hypocrisy". It's a great word, even though about 40 percent of American doesn't know about it or chooses to ignore it. But I'll save you some time and explain why the Palin jokes were funny. You see, sometimes big people tell the world, sometimes even through laws, that what they do OR want TO do is bad or even EVIL. Yeah, I know. But then they do similar or even the same stuff at home. But instead of feeling compassion or gaining some understanding about human nature or how hard just living a real life can be for "the little people" they just go on talking in public about things like morality. And when they get a chance, they take advantage of dumb people with good intentions, advancing their career by lying to voters to make them feel safe or comfortable instead of telling the truth and calling out "dumb as a sack of stones" ideas when they're presented to them. Sometimes with LAWS!! YAY! Now, when you have a brain, sometimes this is VERY, VERY funny. Especially if you choose to not put a bullet in your brain because it feels like the end of the world is just around the corner and the stupid people are taking over.

I love some of the monologues and his sketches, like Andy and Conan boating down the 'L.A.' river... meaning our enormous drainage ditches. But when he's interviewing, I've noticed that he seems very nervous and there's a stiffness in the air... even the lighting, it's like something about it being "The Tonight Show" means it has to be overly 'showbizzy', which I can't fucking stand. He's like a eunuch out there. Also, the guests seem to be giving him little respect. I've counted at least three times so far where they were downright dismissive of him, David Duchovny being one. And I honestly don't blame them, he's sitting funny (like three feet higher but leaning towards them near the corner of the desk, awkward looking, and he's completely sideways), and he laughs a lot in a nervous, "don't say that!" type manner. I also hate the constant jokes of, "I'd like to keep this job," anytime someone says something even REMOTELY sexual. Are the NBC execs REALLY that fucking insane to think you can neuter his humor and have the same audience as Jay? Would they really fire him because a GUEST made some dirty jokes or off-color remarks? Even then, it doesn't make any sense, because he does some pretty adult material in the monologue sometimes... I don't know, I just find the whole thing unbalanced so far.

If your example doesn't live up to what you expect from others, leave the preaching of values to others. Or maybe reconsider the judgments you masquerade as "values". Conan was my favorite, and I think he's been doing pretty well at 11:30.
Dave was an old sentimental favorite, but he seemed to lose it a while back. Well, for those of you who haven't tuned in laely, he's sort of changed his persona since getting married, and become more of a cranky old grump. Believe it or not, this actually serves to make him funny and edgy again. Seriously, I don't know how it works, but he's been hilaious and on a really hot streak
This leaves Jimmy Kimmel unrecorded and unwatched by me, despite the fact that it seems to be a pretty funny show that sometimes has really good guests.
The Stewart/Colbert block on Comedy Central is always worthwile. Thankfully they rerun them a few times over the following day, because there's just no way for me to watch it at 11:30 these days.
There's no more dead weight on late night TV. Help us enjoy it, DVR manufacurers and cable companies!
Also, as an aside, Jimmy Fallon has been unbelievably good at 12:30. I bitched and bitched and bitched when they hired him, and I'll happily eat crow here: He was born to host a talk show, he's got the best writers in late night, the best band in late night, and his show just has an energy to it that I'm not sure I've ever seen on a talk show. I'm now a Jimmy Fallon fan, something I really never thought I'd say. -
They've always phoned in the sketches on his CBS show, whereas Conan has had inspired sketches almost since the beginning. His old staring contests with Andy still kill me. Some guy standing behind Conan in a bathrobe brushing his teeth with toothpaste from a turkey's beak. . . that's when I became a lasting fan. And I don't think Letterman has ever had a skit as inspired as Tom Selleck smothering his own mustache. I'm glad Letterman's hanging around, though - he's sharp and a good interviewer. Better than Leno, who was just amiably bland.

I loved Letterman until shortly after he went to CBS. He just lost his flair he used to have. Political jokes are part of being in public office, but I've noticed the past couple years that Letterman doesn't just make political jokes. He really takes stabs and seems quite angry. Comedians like that aren't funny. Do I think its the end of the world that he made a joke that was in very bad taste...no. I do think it was messed up because like someone else said, you just don't say that stuff about a 14 year old, no matter how much you hate her mom. I'd love to see the liberal tolerance for someone taking pot shots at Obama's kids. That's where the hypocricy lies. Letterman should just quit his show and go on MSNBC...he would fit in well there.

And it SHOULD have gone without saying for the love of christ, but Letterman was referring to BRISTOL Palin in the joke, not Willow. It's perfectly valid to criticize him for not doing the research, but is that really crucifixion-worthy? And it should have doubly gone without saying that anyone who calls this a rape joke is a sensationalist, incendiary fool.

Even if they didn't, I'm of the opinion that Letterman, with a very young child, would never have knowingly done a joke about A-Rod having sex with Palin's 14-year-old. But if the problem is abortion and teen pregnancy, and "abstinence only" is clearly inadequate (as evidenced by the very biography of one of the principle's most forceful public defenders), then continuing to assert that it will solve the problem is absolutely faulty. Thus, a person who insists they intend to solve national and international problems, but demonstrates they lack the will or ability to reason effectively, should absolutely expect to be made fun of. Joking about a single mother having extramarital sex with a second man is hardly the same as portraying Obama as a stereotyped n-word. Bristol is presenting herself as an adult, so she can be treated like one by those who comment on such things. If she can't deal with being treated as an adult, she needs to get out of the public eye, I think. If the evidence comes up that Biden's daughter did the blow, I'd say she's fair game.
As a reference for all of this, look back to the first few seasons of SNL. They often tripped over the good taste line, unfortunately. But when they walked it carefully, there was some of the best comedy of the '70s. It's all about being thoughtful. -

She didn't run for President, she ran for VP. If she does run, I will not vote for her. The only republicans I would vote for right now are Newt or Ron Paul I never said rape was the premise for the joke, it obviously isn't. Joking about the kids of politicians has always been a no-no in late night tv. Making those kind of cracks involving kids lowers the tone of valid discourse. I don't find it intellectually dishonest to say that Bristol, an 18-year-old mother, is presenting herself as a young adult. I tried to be an adult at 18, even if I was still a bit of a kid. My mother certainly presented herself as a young adult when she married my dad at 18 and when she had her first child at 19. Does Bristol come off as fully formed? No, but she *does* present as an adult trying to act as a mentor to younger girls. Given, however, that we treat people as kids well into their twenties - with men acting like high school boys, living on video games and beer - and call adult women "girls" in their 30s, and that this seems ridiculous to me, probably means I'm skewed out of the mainstream. -

The reason the joke was funny is because she already had an underage, pregnant daughter. No pregnant daughter, no reference, no joke. Making the leap from that reference to rape or statutory rape is NONSENSE. And you know it is, that's what makes all this hand-wringing so offensive.

The "game" I was talking about was politics and as far as this being a game, you just jumped in. But if you mean you'd never be in politics, I'd have to say I agree. Most of the people who would do well in politics have actually led real lives with pasts. And we can't have that , can we? The problem is , the rules are set by the previous players. One calls the other dirty, plays rough and the next thing you know you're playing a game where the other guy is setting the rules. If the idea is to win, you have to stay in the game. I can wish it would all change until I die and it just never will. Not without forcing change and that would be too restrictive. Facts and truth as well as lies just seem to want to be free and someone out there will let them do what they will. It might change a little, but even someone like me who considers himself an idealist realizes the core of it will always be a very tough, dirty game. Competition will do that when the stakes are high and the expectations are unrealistic.

When she was mayor of Wasilla, the police had a policy to bill the insurance companies of rape victims for the cost of the rape kit. Depending on the victim's policies, this would likely result in some cost (deductibles, copays) being passed on directly to the victim. It's unclear what would happen in the event a victim was uninsured. It was put ito effect to save some room in the budget, but is clearly stupid. It is a medical procedure, certainly, but is also a way for law enforcement to gather evidence to solve crimes for the public good. As such it should be in the same category as finger printing and other forensic strategies, that are covered by law enforcement budgets. Palin has never gone on record as for or against the policy, nor is there much evidence that she could successfully reason her way to a thoughtful conclusion if she ever tried.

Given this, why not admit that people of the same sex can be as loving and as interested in a merger of finances as those of the opposite sex? Especially given that there were blessing ceremonies for gay couples for hundreds of years, in the Catholic church (the first organized Christian church). Besides, no one is telling any particular cleric he or she must perform gay marriages. Hell, no cleric is required to perform any marriage, if I recall correctly.

(explain reality TV to me again?) Although it's not true with all people who deal with aspergers, many find themselves unable to comprehend humor, jokes and situations that make others laugh. But many also find great humor when others fall, hurt themselves or fail in some way while not being able to comprehend why even the most basic of common jokes are funny. Like I said, not always true. Many people who have aspergers can construct complex word humor. Or they can have a normal sense of humor while their condition presents in other ways. I've found myself often wondering if it's over-diagnosed. Then I run into phenomena that make me wonder if it's more of an epidemic.

As I read the Chronicle, I see articles on David Letterman making jokes about Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter when they were at a charity event. This lack of tolerance surprises me as it is coming from the left, which now has complete control of the government. Usually, this type of comment comes from the powerless and those in power show more tolerance. I could understand the righteous indignation expressed during the Bush administration when someone used the term “nappy-headed.” I seem to recall that the offender was fired. Why wasn’t the same done to Letterman? At this time, I see a concerted effort to marginalize the less-liberal segments of our country. These are not American values. It was efforts like this that ultimately led to the Civil War. When the Southerners believed that the government no longer represented them, they believed they had to secede. Sales of guns and ammunition are up sharply. Why? I am truly worried.

I have tried to watch Conan for years, since it seems like he has this huge following, although the ratings speak differently. I just don't think he is funny AT ALL! His bits are great, as you can see his backround in comedy is in writing, but he just comes off as a buffoon, and I just can't take his monologue or his interviews. My perfect Late Show was have Conan as the head writer, Leno do the monologue and Dave interview the guests.

(please read this without a sarcastic voice, genuinely) I admire your attempts to make peace. Boy, if I ever came across as someone who generalized people instead of going after ideas or individuals with what I would characterize as really really horrible ideas, I'm genuinely sorry. I have christian friends/family. I get along with them well. I think it's also very important for people to understand the difference between criticism and disrespect. I have also known many Christians who will not accept criticism as anything but disrespect. I think the BIG issue here for me is that everyone has a set of subjects that they feel are off-limits when it comes to humor. Especially if they feel THEY are the subject of said humor. But we can't go around asking for the heads of comedians on a platter when it comes to something SO mis-interpretable. In other words, if it doesn't pass the test when it comes to humor that makes sense on any level AND offends a large number of people in a huge way, then maybe it makes sense to ask for more than an apology. (nappy headed ___ comes to mind.. wasn't really funny, didn't make sense and was hateful for no discernible reason.. ) But if it's THIS controversial and the discussion is THIS passionate, obviously an apology, even a weak one, should be enough. In MY opinion, Palin set up the pins of that joke WAY in advance by setting a moral standard WE should meet while not being responsible for seeing to it that she and her family met it. Letterman just knocked the pins down. But I get it. It's good to strive to be a decent, fair and generous human being. I especially admire those who can bring different types of people together. But I am fundamentally disgusted by people who set a moral standard (sometimes through laws or SUPPORT of laws) that they don't even intend on living up to, regardless of what religion or system of beliefs they practice. I encounter this usually coupled with more concern about what people THINK of them vs. what really goes on in their lives. People that would be angry not about what people are actually doing, but instead because they encounter less opposition than they did when THEY tried to do the same thing. You know, like "when I tried to do that, my dad beat the crap out of me.. so I'm going to make things hard for you because *I* can't get away with it. Ted Haggard would be a great example. But even more disgusting than all of that are people who use false claims, lies and outrageous interpretations, disingenuously to SILENCE opposition or criticism. That's cowardly, weak, insults those who would support them and *I* think just makes the world a whole lot dumber.
