AICN TABLETOP: Eberron preview day! Chaos in the Old World! Dark heresy: Tattered Fates!

Well, once again forces from throughout the universe have conspired to delay my column – so there’s a lot of ground to cover this week. LOTS of great stuff. Here goes.
D&D EBERRON PREVIEW
One year after the release of 4th Edition comes the highly anticipated relaunch of the Eberron line with the Eberron Players Guide. Mine should arrive today or tomorrow so I’ll have my thoughts on it pretty soon. For those of you unfamiliar with Eberron, it is an alternate campaign world created after an inventive online search run several years back. The concept is a post-war pulp adventure fantasy world loaded with ancient relics of war left behind along with a number of mysteries. The previous edition included a few mechanics separate from the standard 3e ruleset making many of the classes and prestige classes incompatible with a standard game. If the Eberron PHB follows the lead of the Forgotten Realms PHB, we may see a lot more material ready to be ported into your homebrew campaigns, even if Eberron isn’t your thing.
Well, today they’re sneaking out tidbits across the net as well as releasing a bunch of new info on the D&D Facebook fanpage. The higher the number of new follows they get today, the more stuff gets leaked. So hop on over and check it out – and be sure to get the rest of your party to join you. WotC sent me this new image from the guide.
And of course I’ll have some meat from the book later in the week once I’ve gotten my grubby little hands on a copy. The book releases Tuesday, June 16th.
WARHAMMER: CHAOS IN THE OLD WORLD
Wow. Of all the products I’m anticipating this year, this one is right up in my top 5. A strange FFG board game adaptation of the Warhammer game, this isn’t about playing the various forces of Warhammer. It’s specifically about the warring factions of chaos. You play the dark gods themselves, vying for power over rival deities. Here’s the press release info:
In the Warhammer world, four Gods of Chaos battle for supremacy. Khorne, the Blood God, the Skulltaker, lusts for death and battle. Nurgle, the Plaguelord, the Father of Corruption, luxuriates in filth and disease. Tzeentch, the Changer of Ways, the Great Conspirator, plots the fate of the universe. Slaanesh, the Prince of Pleasure and Pain, the Lord of Temptations, lures even the most steadfast to his six deadly seductions.
In the Chaos in the Old World board game, each player takes the role of one of the malevolent Lords of Chaos. Each god’s distinctive powers and legion of followers give the controlling player unique strengths and heretical abilities with which to corrupt and enslave the Old World. Yet, as the powers of Chaos seek domination by corruption and conquest, they must vie not only against each other, but also against the desperate denizens of the Old World who fight to banish the gods back to the maelstrom of the Realm of Chaos…for now.
I’ve got a buddy who has played it and really dug it. Apparently each god plays VERY different from every other – so fans of Games Workshop’s universe can take the role of their favorite play in a manner that befits that god. He also mentioned that the board looks pretty sweet. It’s a map tattooed on tattered skin. You can find FFGs preview site here. The game has a soft Gencon launch, with a number of copies being on hand for sale a while before it is available to the general public. Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy and throw down with my Bell of Lost Souls buddies who are also chomping at the bit for this.
DARK HERESY: TATTERED FATES
The first in a three part series of adventures for DARK HERESY, TATTERED FATES is a beautiful 70 page hardbound adventure book opening up a series of adventures in the 40k universe. What I’m digging about this series of books is that FFG is really zigging while WotC is sagging. Right now D&D adventure modules are very much about providing well structured encounters complete with maps built around fun, iconic adventures. DARK HERESY on the other hand is all about the fluff. These works are rich with detail about the locales, customs, histories and characters involved. The games are all about immersing the players in the dark, brooding world of 40k. I guess if you want the fights, you can play 40k. If you want to ROLEPLAY in the bleak, brutal future – these adventures are for you.
If you’re a 40k lover, you need to begin picking these books up just for the fluff in them alone. They’re deliciously detailed works that always lights a fire in my belly to finish so I can turn around and paint something that I find in the book – whether it be a monster or a character. This one is something of a survival horror story that deals with psychic torture, a mysterious, twisted carnival and some bizarre, cool antagonists. Definitely worth a look, and something of a must if you’re already a DARK HERESY fan. TATTERED FATES is on shelves now.
Okay gang. I’ve got another installment coming later this week with some a STAR WARS mini preview, a look at my favorite new party game LETTER ROLL and (hopefully) a look at the Eberron PHB. See you guys then.

I like the "Make yourself into a Warforged" Paragon path that Wizards previewed a couple weeks back. But I'm not much of an Eberron fan.

Day after Ragnorok, BRP Rome, or the plethera of other non-Wotc/40K products that have been releases recently? It always the same old same old with you. If you want real reviews of RPGs look up Game geeks on You Tube.

I ask, cuz Paizo's got a lot up updated Pathfinder stuff on their site as free PDF downloads, including the lastest iteration of their 3rd Edition Improved system.
