Lost scores & revamped "Galactica" score featured on SOUNDTRACK CINEMA !!!

Published at:  Aug 06, 1999 8:11:02 PM CDT

Glen here...

Ford A. Thaxton's SOUNDTRACK CINEMA is featuring two rather interesting shows in the
immediate future.

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE on Soundtrack Cinema: a show featuring the "lost scores" for
numerous high profile films. Selections include Bernard Herrman's music from Torn
Curtain
(the score ultimately used was by John Addison), Lalo Schifrin's score to The
Exorcist
(eventually scored by Jack Nitzsche), Randy Newman's...yes, Randy Newman's...
original score for Air Force One (a film ultimately scored by Jerry Goldsmith), and
Ennio Morricone's music for What Dreams May Come (which was released with a
Michael Kamen score).

I've always considered "lost scores" to be an absolutely fascinating subject matter - if you've
any interest in film music, or the film making process in general, this might be a show well worth
checking out.

THE FOLLOWING SOUNDTRACK CINEMA (posted 'round Tuesday Aug 10) will feature a new
recording of Stu Phillip's score from Battlestar Galactica. This new version is being issued on CD, and is performed by the Royal
Scottish National Orchestra & conducted Phillips himself. I've not yet heard this version of the
score (sniffle, sniffle), but given the size & style of the score, I imagine a new recording could
be rather impressive.

SOUNDTRACK CINEMA can heard on-line at HREF="http://www.film.com">film.com. To hear the show, you will need Real Audio,

    Re: Galactica Soundtrack

Sounds interesting. I'm not a big fan of Galactica (or, as a friend of mine calls it, "Battlestar Giggle-a") but movie soundtracks can be lovely pieces of work in compatent hands. As I recall, Galactica's wasn't half bad. If it's good enough I hope this newly unearthed one is released on CD. Meanwhile, I can content myself with "The Essential James Bond." ;-)

    Galactica soundtrack

    by jacob corbin

The soundtrack was by far the best part of "Battlestar Galactica"...it was forceful without being strident, it was memorable, and it got you jonesed to watch the show (which, sadly, never got much better than the title sequence). I'll be curious to hear how the reorchestration sounds...it has the potential to be really cool.

    "Galactica" CD is Fantastic!

    by bsgdan

The newly released soundtrack of "Battlestar Galactica" (Varese Sarabande) is absolutely fantastic. Original composer Stu Phillips has really outdone the original. Of course, much of this praise must also go to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra for reallly showing an unparalleled enthusiasm for the original material.
This new recording is just so much better than the original by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. There are also selections here that were not heard on the previous LP version because they were not included in the pilot film. One of these, "Serina's Illness", is just beautiful. Another good thing about this CD is that they have left off that stupid "It's Love, Love, Love" song. That alone would make this one better than the original.
"Battlestar Galactica" was special for so many reasons-not the least of which was its musical score. Don't miss this chance to rediscover one of the true soundtrack masterpieces of the 1970's.

I disagree: new CD not as good

    by mr. ho ho

I have the new Scottish Philharmonic Galactica soundtrack, and I thought I was buying the album I owned in the early 80's. I realized that it was a new recording as I read the liner notes. I felt that the score is not quite as punchy as it was the first time. And frankly, I missed the stupid Glen Larsen song "It's Love, Love Love" because it was so derivative and cheesy and evocative of the period. And hey, those chicks with three mouths singing that stuff... but anyway after listening through it I find myself missing the original soundtrack. Stu is old now, the reinterpretation of the material not as fresh.
