HowButWHAT?? James Cameron, David Fincher, Zack Snyder and Gore Verbinski To Co-Direct New HEAVY METAL Movie??

Published at:  Jun 08, 2009 3:31:57 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

filmschoolrejects.com has news extraordinary, extraordinarily exciting and kind of unbelievable!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman tells the site that big-deal movie directors James Cameron ("Terminator," "Aliens," "Avatar"), David Fincher ("Alien3," "Fight Club," "Zodiac," "Benjamin Button"), Zack Snyder ("Dawn of the Dead," "300," "Watchmen") and Gore Verbinski ("The Ring," the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy) have all signed on to create segments for a new “Heavy Metal” movie, and that the “Kung Fu Panda” team of Mark Osborne and Jack Black will contribute a segment as well.

In addition, says Eastman:

“Three other directors have agreed but we haven’t signed them, but they’re equally as jaw-dropping. So we’re on cloud nine to be working with such an amazing amount of talent.”

Equally jaw-dropping?? Lucas?? Spielberg?? Abrams??

And how is the Ninja Turtles fellow in possession of such explosive information? Eastman purchased Heavy Metal magazine in 1992, and wrote and produced the direct-to-video sequel "Heavy Metal 2000" starring his porn-star ex-wife Julie Strain. He is credited by IMDb as "producer, director" of this new "Heavy Metal" movie.

    by rocco curioso

In the very near future, all movies will require giant robots, a cameo from either Bill Nighy or Ken Jeong, and a heat signature emanating from Jessica Alba's cooter. It's a small structural price to pay to ensure order in an ever chaotic world.BTW, Cameron's segment will probably cost $80 million and take 3-4 years to complete. He needs to bag this sideshow and get crackin' on Battle Angel Alita.

Somewhat of a throwback to classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Outland, it stars Sam Rockwell as Sam Bell, an astronaut stationed at a lunar mining station and coming to the end of his three-year term when he discovers he's not alone up there.

    by media messiah

Was it up to the standards of the original film, no...but it had its merits, the film just needed a higher budget, more kinkiness and sex, and a better soundtrack, but for a stand alone story, I thought it was pretty very entertaining.

Get George as far away from a camera as possible, I mean...he single handedly destroyed my childhood film favorite memories by raping Star Wars 1-3 and Indy 4. Gore. Zack and the other fucks are not story creators, so they are as hacky as a sack - Cameron might be able to make a cool 15 min story-- or at least Cameron 20 years ago could have. The original is so good the way it is -- and the B-52 chapter "Gremlins" is my favorite.

that's just my guess but let's just say I have a VERY strong hunch. Mark my words.
Also, I gotta agree with the people above who said that Julie Strain is not a porn star. She's just a model with giant boobs and a millionaire nerd husband who owns the Batmobile. It's not fair to real porn stars to call somebody who hasn't done porn a porn star.

Can't wait for this, Heavy Metal has been incredibly influential on so many genre directors, nice to see such talent paying tribute in a new HM feature. Hope they draw from some of the classic stories/strips, Liberatore, Mobius, Bilal, Corben etc. Soundtrack is going to be important too, lots of classic metal and hopefully a score to rival the great Elmer Bernstein's score for the original. He's a professed fan of Metal Hurlant (dating back to his RCA days) hired his hero Jean Gireud Mobius on Dune and Alien, and has recently worked with Silvian Despreux. Hoping he could find the time to get in on this, maybe make the Dan 'O bannon's/Mobius detective story that inspired the look of Blade Runner.

I'm a HUGE Fincher fan (even after Ben Button) and that isn't even close. So far anyway. Kubrick was a once-in-a-generation director and we haven't seen his equal yet. P.T. Anderson? Aronofsky? This Heavy Metal thing sounds sickening. Can't wait to find out who the other 3 directors are.

    by johnno

Well they'd basically be a bunch of 1/2 hour short films taking place in the Matrix universe. Live action and animated. Get all these great directors and artists together to make something as awesome a collection of stories as Animatrix. Cameron, Oshii, Tarantino, Spielberg, Lucas, Nolan, Miyazaki whatever, whoever, just get a whole bunch of people with a great budget and have them do individual stories/stylistic takes on the Matrix. Now THAT would be a project worth something! Even the hacks amongst them can at least deliver an action packed spectacle. It's a fucking world and concept where they could pull off just about anything! I would love to see that, hope WB is listening! I'm sure the Wachowskis would be all aboard this idea!

That stuff is for people that still wear JNCO pants. I'd like: Mastadon, 3 Inches of Blood, Maiden, Baroness, Isis, Doom Riders, ASG, Big Business, Jesu, Nash The Slash, and Zombi. Also, FUCK George Lucas! Do you guys want this to be pixar heavy metal or do you want good ol' 2D? They should see what Don Bluth is up too. The guy who made Secret Of NIMH would be better than Lucas.

Make it Don Hertzfeldt, and I'm already sold. Also, get Mike Judge to do something, somehow, for this project. Actually, anyone from Liquid Television should be on the short list for this movie.

Creepshow is the anthology to which I compare all others.

Still looking forward to this if it happens, though. Anthologies overall are great ways to take on traditional and entertaining themes while introducing new blood to the rotation.

Abrams is in no way jaw-dropping

    by subtlety

and in no way comparable to even latter-day Spielberg or Lucas. Geez, you make one decent movie these days and everyone's trying to throw you into a pantheon of greatness.
I'm with the folks worried about what kind of Metal would be in there, though. Mastadon would be great though. And whoever said Grinderman, excellent suggestion. Municipal Waste, maybe?

    by engelhast

for them to make the next Heavy Metal movie live action rather than Animation or maybe a combo of both. The magazine was always such a hodgepodge of different styles and stories and the film version should also be. This is where the first Heavy Metal movie succeeded and that god awful Heavy Metal FAKK 2000 failed.

Other three I would like to see directing segments:

    Quentin Tarantino
    Terry Gilliam
    Chris Cunningham

    by castlemonster

Heavy Metal is still in publication. And the writing may be puzzling or simplistic to some but it's very European so it just naturally has that bleak, empty, ambiguous post-modernist attitude about it. Which, when I was a kid, was a nice change from the tired dualistic superhero mold of American comics (of which I've never been a fan).

When I brought up Miyazaki etc...

    by johnno

I was referring to a Matrix concept, not Heavy Metal, given Animatrix shorts like 'Beyond' with the kids playing in a haunted house, I think Miyazaki could come up with some kind of story to suit his tastes involving robots and nature perhaps in a pre-Matrix world before the 2nd Renaissance war... hell Castle in the Sky was precisely something like that! Or a story about kids in a Matrix program that simulates nature in contrast to the apocalyptic real world. But anyway, this is about Heavy Metal... So I don't think he'll give a damn. And in a sense neither do I...

    VERHOEVEN!

    by c3po

I can't think of any director better suited to helm a segment of sci-fi & smut than Paul Verhoeven. They've got to get him in there somewhere. Other possible names I'd like would be Raimi, Del Toro, Jackson or Gilliam. And on another note, when listing Fincher's filmography, why would you leave out Seven in favour of Alien 3?! Unless you're being bitchy... And on yet another note, I enjoy Lost as much as anyone, but seriously, Abrams has made one solid sequel and one very good Star Trek film. The bulk of his output is decent, polished television. The prequels might have been... well... let's not get into all that again, but still, Lucas brought us STAR WARS for crying out loud. Mentioning someone who has made a couple of films based on 60s TV shows in the same breath as Lucas and Spielberg, sheesh...

That segment along with the one with the coke snorting aliens actually were the best animated IMO. It may have been a more simple and cartoon like style but it was fluid and very well drawn and way more superior and watchable than the herky jerky stuff that was trying to look realistic.
