Comedy Central Orders 13 More Episodes Of FUTURAMA??

Published at:  Jun 08, 2009 1:18:16 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Cal Kemp at Mr. Beaks' old site, collider.com, is reporting that the four “Futurama” direct-to-DVD movies won’t be the last we’ll see of Bender, Leela, Morbo, et al.

Kemp’s “inside source” indicates that Comedy Central has given the animated sci-fi sitcom a new 13-episode order:

… word is that “Futurama” production offices have already opened and that casting is about to move forward …

IF it's true. Futurama is perhaps THE best half-hour animated show in the past 20 years. It's DVD release movies had a lot of great moments, but fell a bit flat over the long run, trying to maintain a longer story. But over a half hour, it is some of the best stuff on television.

I wish they had brought it back like this in the first place. I feel like the DVD movies just stretched out the series' resurrection too far. And while I thought they were mediocre to nearly good, sticking to new half hours woulda worked better. In fact, a lot of the various subplots would have worked better as half hours built around the same premise.I'll still watch all these, but the DVDs just delayed things.

Futurama is at its best when it's short, sharp and funny. The movies just stretched things out and slowed the plot down - which got in the way of the jokes. I believe that Futurama will be back on form with individual episodes.

Look, each movie was just 4 interrelated 22 minute episodes without the credits or commericals. Just watch it in chunks if you need episodes so badly. From a marketing perspective, the movies were genius, getting fools (like me) to shell out $20 for 4 episodes of the show. That's $80 for one 16 episode season on DVD. OUCH!

    by jt kirk

Granted, the last 3 movies were painfully uneven at best, but damn is it better to have more Futurama than none. I get that they do the movies to bilk the fans like me out of buying them on DVD first, so whatever it takes, but I would like to suggest to the writers that they work a little longer on the overarcing storylines in a framework format BEFORE writing the scripts, even if it means making sacrifices to individual episodes. This show deserves to be remembered for high quality laughs and storylines, not shoehorned laughs and scattershot storylines.

    by feralangel

I've pretty much had my fill of his shiny metal ass. A robot that acts like a jerkoff fanboy, har de har har damn it's gotten old. But Fry and Leela gave this ditzy show some humanity, and some of its best episodes. And how about an overarching storyline, hm? You know, make the show less episodic. How about some kinda space war goin' down, and Planet Express has to supply provisions to the troops, and deal with smugglers and warlords and the like. Give the show some ooomph. Futurama sucked too often because you'd have a decent ep one week and a godawful one the next, with nothing to glue them together into any kind of cohesive series thematic, you dig. Oh, one more thing...kill off Zap Brannigan. Enough of that hole already. I would PAY to see that happen. He stopped being funny long time ago. I have spoken. Obey my directives and you might win my viewership, earthborn scum.

Mate, I'm glad you and me agree that Futurama should continue and you have thought about how it can happen a lot more than I have.It is hard to pick fault with someone who is able to explain their opinion clearly and back them up with arguments. Unfortunately though every single one of your ideas is terrible. The advantage of cartoons is that you DON'T need any character development. No one gets old, no one has to grow up, no one can get hurt - Charlie Brown never has to leave elementary school, Garfield never goes lame and gets hit by a car, Coyote never catches Road Runner.By next week they are back to square one again ready for their next humerous episodic adventure. The only requirement is to keep it funny. And shame on you for dissing Bender.

Youngdog, Futurama failed in its first outing

    by feralangel

Just thought I'd point that out. And unlike (ugh) Family Guy, there's been no revival motivated by high DVD sales. So that tells me that Futurama was not an overlooked diamond-in-the-rough. It still doesn't appeal to enough people to make it anything like a hit. It's just a cult classic, and that kind of show doesn't thrill network executives (since geeks=broke). So THAT tells me the show still has some weaknesses. I recall that there was a lot of griping on this board when the 2nd and 3rd Futurama Direct-To-DVDs completely ignored the storyline from the first DVD, esp. regarding Leela and Fry. Continuity does matter, unless the jokes are really REALLY good, and come on. So I beg to differ. And Bender to me is a turn-off, always was. He takes the dumb self-centered degenerate male stereotype 20,000 leagues beyond Homer Simpsons, and IMO, beyond the point of funny. But that's just me. Regards!

The general apathy toward FUTURAMA in the wake of the four subpar movies (the missed opportunities!) will guarantee, with the worsening aconomy, that risky ventures like new episodes of FUTURAMA will not be possible in the wake of the cold heart REALITY (TV).

..its a shame that futuristic/scifi TV shows never seem to get the audience they deserve on their first run.Red Dwarf, Star Trek, Firefly, T:SCC - the list goes on. There just seems to be a large percentage of the TV watching population (ie: morons) that see anything involving space/the future/computers as 'stoopid'. Some shows make cult status later on, some don't.But don't equate 'geeks' with 'broke'. Ever since the IT revolution producers have realised that there are a lot of brainy people with disposable income to spend. Geeks are no longer stuck in labs earning peanuts - now they are working in IT and spending money on iPhones, huge HD tellys and extensive DVD/BR collections!

    The DVD movies sucked...

    by kid z

...because of the weird-ass format enforced on them by the suits. Stretching a half-hour formatted show into a 1.5+ hour movie is always a bad idea, requiring that the movie then be available for splitting back into separate half-hour segments is even more idiotic. Typical corp-think. I mean remember how great The Muppet Show was? 30 minutes of epic silliness, good, bad, hokey humor all hitting you rapid fire. Then, they did the movie. I remember sleeping through it. Hopefully the move back to 30 minute eps will bring back that Futurama magic again. Here's hoping, anyway.
