L.A. Readers! The New Beverly Film Explosion Starts Tonight With CLASS OF 1984 And 3:15: THE MOMENT OF TRUTH!!!

Published at:  Jun 02, 2009 2:58:45 PM CDT

Beaks here...

Let's get reaaaaadddyyyyyyy to rrrruuuuummmmmmble!

The weeklong New Beverly Film Explosion is kicking off tonight at 7:30 PM with an ultraviolent, high-schoolers-gone-murderously-bad double feature! So slip on your brass knuckles, flip open your butterfly knife and let's get it on with...

Mark L. Lester's CLASS OF 1984 boasts a showdown between two of the biggest badasses of 1980s exploitation cinema: Perry King and Timothy Van Patten. King plays the wet-behind-the-ears music teacher who gets assigned to one of the worst high schools in Toronto; Van Patten is the drug-dealing gang leader who makes life miserable for King (and a fresh-faced dork played by newcomer Michael Fox). CLASS OF 1984 was co-written by FRIGHT NIGHT's Tom Holland, and he'll be in attendance this evening (schedule permitting) to candidly answer your questions about his involvement in this shlocky '80s classic.

After CLASS OF 1984, it's on to...

Seeing that VHS box brings back memories. This was one of those movies that arrived in the video store without any fanfare. I remember becoming aware of it right around the time Phil Joanou's THREE O'CLOCK HIGH hit theaters, so I rented it because, hey, what's not to like about teenaged street toughs kicking the crap out of each other? With chains, no less!

I can't remember much of anything from this movie, other than it's ridiculously violent. This was Adam Baldwin's bully-battlin' follow-up to Tony Bill's wonderful MY BODYGUARD (which the New Beverly recently screened), and is probably his sixth best film of the decade (behind FULL METAL JACKET, THE CHOCOLATE WAR, MY BODYGUARD, COHEN AND TATE and D.C. CAB). Deborah Foreman also stars, which should seal the deal for you.

After tonight, the festival continues with a random collection of classic '80s titles that you'd be a complete asshole to miss. Here's the rest of the lineup (bet you never thought you'd see JOYSTICKS on the big screen):

I miss the New Beverly that played a lot more foreign and classic films instead of this kind of b-movie crap, which has been way too prevelant in the last year or so. Their long-time manager died a while back so maybe that's the reason. Luckily later this month at there are Powell & Pressburger, Polanski, and Douglas Sirk double features, and I was impressed by the Paradjanov films they showed in May.

Class of 1984 is a good one

    by vern

The best part is the way it all comes together into the perfect climax when the teacher throws Stegman through a skylight into the gym where his music recital is going on.
If you haven't seen it I also recommend Class of 1999. Same director, otherwise unrelated, it takes place in a ridiculous ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK inspired future where schools are prisons and the teachers (including Pam Grier) are military robots. Lots of good low budget Terminator-rip-off effects, and filmed in Seattle too.

    New Beverly still rules ...

    by 300 monkeys

They are still showing all the foreign and classic stuff, but they've added more grindhouse and b-movie madness, because things that don't evolve, you know, die.

Actually, I think ever since the death of the owner (sorry, but his name escapes me right now) the New Beverly has played less classics, art house and foreign films and more grindhouse/exploitation films. I mean it is always nice to see Spider Baby on the big screen, but it is kind of sad that you can't really see a Bunuel or a Shohei Imamura film at a theatre (Egyptian excluded).

Class Of 1984 is pure cult

    by toby_fn_wong

I love that movie to death. This movie still stands the test of time. And like another talkbacker said. Metal detectors? Yeah right. I also remember reading somewhere that Class Of 1984 was ridiculed because of the unrealistic portrayal of school being shown. That movie was a taste of the future.

The piss-poor Alice Cooper song from Class of 1984? It was "I am the Future" which was ironic since he was already about 40 at the time

    Class of 1984 is great...

    by eustisclay

but my favorite of the killer teenagers has always been Massacre at Central High. Don't know why this film hasn't been released on dvd. Maybe it's too close to the Columbine tragedy(though I'd have thought the same thing about 1984). On the flip side they could do a double feature on kick ass teachers, The Substitute and The Principal.

I agree, that song is terrible! I was surprised when I saw it was Alice Cooper. It sounded like some kid who was in the movie had a shitty band and they wanted to keep it cheap. And the funniest part is it's written by the great Lalo Schifrin.
