Head Still Hot To Revive The
TV Buffiverse With RIPPER!!
I am – Hercules!!
While promoting the new BBC/NBC series “Merlin,” Anthony Stewart Head tells scifiwire.com he’s still hopeful Joss Whedon will be able to revive his old Rupert Giles character in a BBC “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” spinoff project titled “Ripper.”
The project has been gestating since 2001, when Head left his regular role on “Buffy” near the start of its sixth season. The actor tells the site he’d like to do it as a TV-movie that could lead to a new regular series, but there are a couple of obstacles:
1) "Buffy" mastermind Whedon is currently busy with both the Fox series “Dollhouse” and the big-screen UA thriller “Cabin in the Woods”; and
2) The project would have to get the okays of 20th Century Fox and producers Fran & Kaz Kuzai, who have been busy pitching a new big-screen version of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” unrelated to the TV show.
As for what the “Ripper” movie would deal with, Head tells scifiwire:
… I hope that one day it gets made, whether it's in the guise of Ripper or whether we just tell it as a one-off TV movie. It's a lovely, lovely story. It's kind of a ghost story. It's also about a man investigating his own soul …

First! Plus this could still be fun to see!

Damn
-
Seriously, what's the point now?

Yeah, Dollhouse is really a reason for Joss not to make this
by darthflagg
I know he wants to try different things, but his refusal to give us any continuation of the Buffyverse outside of comics is one of the reasons we now have the terrifying prospect of a new Buffy movie from the makers of the first Buffy movie they fucked up.
-
...too much time has passed... People will just go "What's the deal with the Prime Minister from Little Britain ?" Or some such parlance....
-
Have you seen Dollhouse or Dr. Evil's Sing Along Blog or whatever it's called? I can't believe this is the same guy who did Firefly and Serenity, Buffy and Angel. So sad.
-
It breaks my heart, but it'll never happen. Joss has Dollhouse & those assholes are rebooting Buffy so the whole history may as well be flushed down the pan. It really sucks, as I'd love to see Giles full on kicking ass like he did in Series 6 - also it could open the door for cameos from other cast memebers....
-
but I don't think Joss will oblige.
Still, it was a *Buffy* related *wish*, so naturally it NEEDED to be on the main page with a talkback.
-

but its two thousand and fucking nine now! will james marsden also wish to play spike but suggests that they do it quickly before he ages too much? which david Boreanaz say he'll play angel again, but only on the big screen? will Eliza Dushku not wnat to play faith becuase of other exciting projects in the pipeline like tru calling? will smg refuse to play buffy because of her staring roles in blockbusters like the grudge! will nicholas brendan want to go back to the buffyverse because of his new hit new show kitchen confidential?

c'mon guys. slow news day? but really? it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye http://bit.ly/spidervid

-
He can spin off the Buffy reboot movie into an alternate timeline, guest starring Head as an aged Ripper.
Apparently, people fucking *love* ideas like this. No idea why though.
-
Ra on Dollhouse (I have yet to see it) but Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog was genius. It was a comedic musical that had good music and was funny. So where did that go wrong? Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillon were the shit in it. Fucking love the soundtrack for it.

Open Letter To Mutant Enemy Productions: Put-Up, Or Shut-Up!!!
by Media Messiah
I love Joss and gang, but I am tired of being led around by my nose by you guys, only to get my hopes dashed with press releases and interview statements that have no integrity. First, "Goners", then this, or was it, the other way around? The Spike TV movies, the Willow TV movies, and the Buffy Animated series? Enough!!! Either you guys at Mutant Enemy, and distinguished colleagues, are going to honor your collective words, and promises, and bring these projects into being, or, and I say this respectfully, shut-up about them, already!
-
this isnt a news story. it's an off the cuff remark by one of the actors. It's been put forward as a newsworthy item, when in actuality it's a fluff piece by herc. It's not news. it's ain't it fark news.com
-
Seriously, you could turn it up loud enough so that every other voice on the show would send you into shock.
And everytime ol' mumbles would talk, you'd look at whoever was next to you and say *what'd he say?*
-
No one from Mutant Enemy is going to read this talkback and give a shit about open letters to them.
-
Is fucking gorgeous. Just thought I'd mention it.
-
they went as far as creating a mini promo episode. so it was done and ready, its just that nobody wanted to produce it or pick it up or whatever. but the rest yeah, we constantly hear stories about them "coming maybe" so its time to let it go or truly pursue it.
-
He has more than one, doesn't he? Daisy and Emily. I think Emily Head looks a bit like Michelle Ryan (of the new bionic woman).
-
God this would have been exciting in 2001, but now...no.

-
Sure maybe too much time has passed but if they did go forward with this I and most everyone here would pop a nut wating to see it. Keeping fingers crossed.
-
Nothing like reconnecting with your loyal nineties housewives base.
-
Give it up already. Do you see me crying about Supernatural finishing up next year? Nope. The story ends with that and that's that. There is nothing wrong with leaving something alone and cherishing it for a lifetime.
-
We've always known Tony Head wanted to do the Ripper movie. Joss says he wants to do it, too - but timing and budget and all, blah blah blah. Maybe Dollhouse's second season will embolden him to try this.
but gods, I can't believe this is the first mention on this site of the awful travesty that is this STUPID cash grab, I mean 'Buffy reboot.' The Buffy movie was the only thing these Kuzui(?) people have ever done - they see the Twilight numbers, and think they can make a buck, thumbing its nose at the legions of fans and basically saying 'you have beloved characters and a beloved creator? Fuck you, we're making our own just to line our wallets.' Well, fuck you, Kuzuis. I hope your production is cursed and never gets off the ground. Bastards.
Oh, and check this out: http://hijink sensue.com/2009/05/29/ rebuffed/
-
Angel still remains the coolest show ever made. We have yet to see a paranormal show that matches the pathos, creativity, and sheer badassness of the vampire(s) with a soul.
-
the new Buffy movie has been mentioned.
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/41180
Harry had a story about it on the 25th May, for example.
-
It was a lot of fun seeing him chew the scenery as a bad guy in the episode "School Reunion" and considering he also has done DOCTOR WHO audio adventures for Big Finish Productions, he apparently enjoys the concept quite a bit. Whedon's loss can be WHO's gain...again.
-
Speaking of Doc Who, No mention here of Matt Smiths new companion: the hot young redhead.
And of Michelle Ryan, she was drop dead gorgeous in the DW 'Planet of the Dead' special at Easter. Really too bad she won't be a regular.
-
Amen, brother. Michelle Ryan is so beautiful she looks alien. She oozes sexuality and class, which is a rare asset in this day and age. She also looked pretty good in Jekyll.
-
Karen Gillan announced as the new companion for 2010, the 2009 DOCTOR WHO specials airing first on BBC America instead of "Siffy," the new TORCHWOOD: CHILDREN OF EARTH trailer...You would think at least one of these items would get a talkback.
-
The new companion looks fine.
-
if you are a head fan, check it out. its a gothic rocky horror. kinda cool if you are in the mood for it.
-
In the excellent Pompei episode, she played the Soothsayer (under all that makeup)
http://tinyurl.com/knf8aw
-
Not going to happen. He's too old to play Ripper now, anyway.
-
but that's not happening either.
-
to quote our Brit friends.
-
I'd like Summer Glau to terminate my current bout with celibacy, but that's not happening either.
-
She looks like a Precious Moments figurine. She's all forehead and eyeballs. For the life of me I don't get what you geeks see in that Strawberry Shortcake clone. She's heinous.
-
You must get a fat woody at the thought of Olive Oyl in a string bikini. Or Lily Tomlin in a hot tub from Moment To Moment. Eww. I grossed myself out with that one.
-
Ben and Karen are amazing for child actors.Smart well written adult comedy.
Why do Brits make smart tv and the US stutters along?
-
is what they should do. Showcase different Slayers and you could stunt cast in any of the old gang. All while giving new actors who actually want to devote time a chance to shine.
-
Kinda surprised I didn't see ya on that Buffy TB. We might have to review your membership :P
-
I think that was the only time Giles raised his voice on the series..
-
I think I may have been out of town at the time, and wasn't checking the board. Sorry to have deprived all of you of my...um...wisdom! Buffy scholars rock!
-
So....Dr. Horrible was crap? Dollhouse may not be great, but hey, Joss gotta eat.
-
Giles also raised his voice when he sang!!
And contrary to popular belief (here, anyway), Dollhouse IS great. Those last 3 episodes were some of the best genre tv I've seen outside of Lost and BSG since, well, Firefly! Can't wait for season 2!
-
Whedon and co. working are always a good thing, but it just keeps sounding like people trying to cook up business for themselves and not doing much at all. Pretty much like Kevin Smith.
-
He almost single handedly ruined Seth Rogan's career, no mean feat.
His weekly podcast is pretty funny too.
For a guy who weighs over 300lbs (we're talking Homer in a Moo-moo here) and who's gonna be dead in 10 years, he's doing well enough.
-
I love Joss, I wasnt able to see all of Dollhouse due to recording 3 shows on Friday nights. But I'll give it a run this week since I'm home sick.
-
Strange, it's not like anything we've faced before, yet, it seems familiar somehow.....Of course...the spell we cast with Buffy, must have unleashed some primal evil, that's come back-seeking-im not sure what....anyway...

I'VE GOT TO WARN BUFFY! THERE'S ANY CHANCE SHE MIGHT BE NEXT. (raising voice)

And dont bleed on no couch. He just had it steem-cleaned.

POOM!

(LOST STYLE)
-
That's the point I was trying to make by saying Joss only makes shit now. I've seen clips for DR HORRIBLE and DOLLHOUSE and nothing about either interested me in the slightest. NOTHING! And I was a Mutant Enemy fan in high school. I'm not looking to just spit venom on the guy. Joss Whedon, no matter how much garbage he dumps on a network, is aces in my book. He has thoroughly entertained me for over ten years between Angel, Buffy & Firefly. But come on, Dollhouse is shit. Dushku is pretty to look at but she's no Jenna Jameson. The moment she opens her mouth I want to yawn. Building an entire show around her was a grave mistake. It's like no one at FOX remembered the Emmy-award winning, Tru Calling. I'd rather see Zack Galifinakis dress in drag every week than her or that sci-fi abortion. Sorry!
-
Joss does shit now? And you know this from clips? Prejudge much? Dr. Horrible, while somewhat silly on the surface, still managed to be a more insightful look into a supervillain than most of the superhero films in the last few years. For anyone who hasn't seen it, watch it until the end. The status is not quo!
And if your idea of quality performance is Jenna Jameson, then I can guarantee your not Whedon's target audience.
-
i mean wtf.
season 7 was so woefully bad anything wouldve helped.
-
Just one, stop humping the corpse.
-
Like what Wesley turned into on Angel, a brilliant badass. Plus, I cringed at the same things he did.
-
Giles turned into a demon was the shiznit or the bomb (or whatever the kids say these days). Always fun to spot Tony in "More Bad News" as a sound engineer. Good times...good times.
-
Angel is good, but the Brothers Winchester are way more badass :)
-
Watch it. It has more of a Joss feel than Dollhouse. It's very well written and has the perfect Joss finish.
-
Giles is also my fav character, with Spike 2nd. Band Candy was probably my fav Giles ep
-
Why not combine the tv show the Lonegunmen with the Buffyverse. Giles could mumble like Fox mumbler and his FBI/slayer female sidekick could be Michelle Ryan with died red hair of course.
-
Buffy, and especially angel were great. That was many years ago, time to move on.

And let's all not forget that the final two seasons of Buffer were pretty painful; the character were unsympathetic and the show jumped the shark a few times. And no single hour of television has ever been over-hyped more than the singing episode. Then again it was on UPN, practically no one saw it, so who's there to contradict the fans. The question will be, what kind of show do people *today* want to see, not how can we make a show for people in their late 20s and 30s who were buffy fans 10 years ago. In fact, do younger people watch TV anymore?
-

If either Joss or the BBC are looking for a show-runner, Joe Ahearne would be the go-to guy -- he's written and directed 3 short genre series ('Ultraviolet'(1998),'Strange'(2002),'Apparitions'(2008)) and done several episodes of the new Doctor Who.

If Head or Whedon can pitch it, Ahearne could write and direct it. It's been years in the coming

-
If they had a story to tell I'm sure they would have, there simply isn't one, who cares about young Giles? also expecting the BBC to produce anything without at least 25 years worth of meetings, discussion and round table discussions first is naive.
-
The implication was that Dushku is no better actor than a pornstar, Dr. Hawking. And the purpose of any clip is to build interest. If a clip can't manage to do that, I don't bother. Life is short enough without wasting time on shit.
-
Beat it.
-
it lacks warmth. It's missing the camaraderie of the Buffy cast and that small town familiarity that's so inviting. A revisit in any form would be wonderful. Dollhouse is probably a dream show from a writer standpoint, but as good as the episodes have been, it feels cold and shallow compared to Buffy.
-
...is a long time to go without a steady paycheck. C'mon, Joss... hook him up on Dollhouse or something!
-
My point is that any comparison of a television actress to a pornstar is a pretty clear indication that you're not Whedon's target audience (ie. that you're probably a sexist douchebag, but I could be wrong). And clips may or may not grab your interest, but that's not what you said. You said, Joss is making 'shit' now, based on a pretty cursory glance at clips. My point is that you're making a pretty sweeping statement based on the flimsiest of evidence. Didn't think I had to explain that, 'Dr. Hawking.'
-
blah.
-
got to agree with darkartist on dollhouse watched 4 episodes and bored. I cant believe that this is the same guy that brought us the uberness that is firefly, this feels like it was written by him before he made buffy(probably would have got away with it back then).
-
You mean to tell me you have to be sexist pig to recognize that Dushku can't act any better than a video whore? People who have gone their entire lives without watching porn own a television and unless they only keep it on Trinity Broadcast Network they will figure out that the acting in porno is so hilariously horrible that it's lampooned in sitcoms and sketch comedy shows. I get the point you're trying to make, although your rampant ignorance has made it difficult. Who the hell made you an authority on Marketing, anyway? You work on a ratings board or something? Somehow I doubt it. You don't know any more than everyone else talking back so shut up.
-
The issue is being clouded by whores! (They always do that). The real arguement between you two is that the series was judged on a couple of clips of the show, instead of watching the entire run of the show.
And ,oisisn, it's a valid cop. If DarkA saw a bit and didn't dig it, that's fine. Your point that if he watch more he might like it better is also viable but if he is not interested to begin with, it's futile because there is no reason in his mind to re-visit something he has no interest in.
You can't even say that he would probably like it if he saw more of it, because you can't speculate on other people's taste like that.
Eliza's acting was never my top concern. They showcased her in the first few eps, yes - it's her production deal after all - but I never believed that Dollhouse would become the "Eliza Show". Why? Because Stephen King once said, "It is the tale; not he who tells it." And I love that. Because it's true.
At the beginning of D'House - at least critically - it was all Eliza. It was her show, her deal. When she got Joss on board, the focus shifted to him because he's back on TV after so long. But the mission statement inside FOX did not change. This was still Eliza's show. They put the money on HER - they gave HER the deal. But when she got Joss to sign on...it shifted to him. Which I think is one of the reasons why the first episodes were so murky. Joss was trying to do the job that FOX gave him - Sell Eliza. But he was also trying to find a mythology that could incorperate an emsemble, almost behind the execs backs. He had to do it slowly and quietly, then all of a sudden - Hey, the eps are getting better and we finding out more about Adelle, Victor, Sierra, Topher and what do you know, the first season ends not as a straight Eliza showcase but an real ensemble that might be worth watching.
If you can get FOX execs turned around from there own goddamn mission statement and get a second season with those type of ratings, you must be doing someting right
-
Dr. Horrible is great. First time I watched it, I fell in love with NPH. Second time, Felica. Third. Nathan Fillion.
"I have the deltoids of compassion, the abs of being kind; it's not enough to bash in heads, you have to bash in minds! Everybody!"
-
Yes sir Buffwrestling. I had a professional Dr. Horrible costume made. Wearing it at comic con, with my 2 dr who suits. Annnnnd Shaun of the Dead. I got pics if you wanna see on FB
-
Because *I* was Shaun of the Dead!!
Contact me at myspace or twitter "buffywrestling" and I'll show you my Shaun costume :)
"You've got red on you."
-
You've made such a good argument for the show that I may give it another shot. I thought it started off as a Whedon project. Didn't know it was Eliza's thing.
-
When Buffy was going strong, I'd thought I heard he wanted to do it? But it's been far too long now. I was interested back then, but now a lot of things has changed.
