Will Ferrell!! Andy Richter!! Pearl Jam!! NBC-TV Launches This Evening THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH CONAN O’BRIEN!!

Published at:  Jun 02, 2009 1:13:17 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

After more than three months away from nightly television, Conan O’Brien tonight becomes the fifth host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show.”

Andy Richter replaces Joel Goddard as announcer, but most of the other key “Late Night” players are making the move to 11:35 p.m.

Will Triumph be back the first night? What of the Masturbating Bear, Pimpbot and Preparation-H Raymond?

Will they confuse everyone by installing Chris Elliott as the show’s resident “Guy Beneath The Seats”?

Will Ferrell, pimping “Land of the Lost” is the show’s first guest. Pearl Jam also turns up.

Tuesday brings Tom Hanks and Green Day.

Wednesday not as impressive. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bradley Cooper and Sheryl Crow.

Thursday Gwyneth Paltrow and the John Mayer Trio.

Friday the show’s bookers have already stopped trying with Ryan Seacrest and Chickenfoot.

The new set:

The new home of Max Weinberg and the Tonight Show Band:

Andy Richter’s podium, far from the couch:

The show’s brand spanking new 21st century tapeless control room:

A shot of the show’s “scene dock,” whatever that is. I don’t know what these are either but they remind me of the moonbase in "Space 1999" and I want them:

The new Pearl Jam song reminds me a lot of an amazing old Devo song titled "Gut Feeling":

11:35 p.m. Monday. NBC.

Conan Rocks. I wish him nothing but the best of luck. Leno is/was so stale and stagnant. It would be a shame if NBC waffles if the ratings dip. Leno needs to keep to the stand-up circuit where he belongs. He'll fail in Prime-time, that's a certainty.

Conan will prove to be capable of keeping the "Tonight Show" alive for the next generation, if the suits let him.

also they're not "the max weinberg seven" anymore, which kinda bugged me... but they've got more people! ... exciting!

    I had no idea!

I'm sure he'll be doing more than announcing, starring in skits from time to time and whatnot... but are times that tough that he's now taken on a permanent job as an announcer?

The colors are mostly rich "nighttime" colors. The blue lighted elements seem a bit much, but not horrible. Having the band on our right isn't horrible - I'm glad the couch/desk setup is nice and familiar. Yep, really need Andy on the couch - I suppose that can always still happen.

I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers in concert a couple years ago on Halloween night, and Chad Smith's costume was the Wonder Bread Nascar suit from Talladega Nights. So he's definitely aware of the similarity.

Dealer, there's no official word on a release date, but the rumor is early fall, probably September. Also, here's a recording of the new song from the video shoot(quality's not the best tho): http://www.antiquiet.com/news/2009/05/new-pearl-jam-song/

    by indyabbey jones

I guess its a LA thing compared to a new york thing, but i always prefered the blue and greys of letterman and connan to the oranges and browns and bright colours that leno hadi was hoping conan wouldn't go so LA right from the begining...it still bugs me that the band is on the right, that just makes it akward, cause the host has to turn to interact with the band..I always thought Leno did it because he hated Kevin eubanks. also i hope conan enters the stage from the left, Leno's right stage, non curtain enterance was always so stupid cause he had to walk infront of the desk before his monologue and there was no curtian so to sum it up, Jay Leno ruined late night TV...can Conan save it?

Sammy Hagar was never in Van Halen.

    by azultool

Van Halen was a great rock 'n roll band that recorded awesome songs about sex, drugs, and cars. They broke up in 1984, eventually reuniting for a tour in 2007-sans original basist. I do distinctly remember Sammmy Haggar was in some bullshit adult-contemperary band in the 80's and 90's that recorded songs about falling in love and becoming somebody's dad. There may have been members of Van Halen in that band, but I'm not sure.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on that one (except on the point that Hagar and Satriani are indeed a LOT older than the others). On the rock scale of great, I'd put "Can't Drive 55" somewhere between "Calling Dr. Love" and "Danke Schoen."

    New Pearl Jam

    by malik23

Darthvedder81, just because someone might think Pearl Jam hasn't come out with a decent song in over 15 years doesn't make them a "poseur." Personally, I was never a big fan of "Jeremy" or "Evenflow," either, but now their music just sounds like a monotonous shitty echo of their past hits. And deep down, you must know this . . . otherwise you wouldn't be preemptively defensive about a point no one has even made yet (well, until now). I mean, you're literally making fun of imaginary critics. If you feel so defensive about PJ's lack of good music that you have to defend Pearl Jam against criticism which hasn't even happened yet, maybe you're the poseur, dude.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Kind of lost track with PJ after Binaural. But, I must say 'Worldwide Suicide' is a very groovy tune.--Another agree to disagree deal. If they actually had a Roth/Hagar VH tour. They better put Sammy on first, cuz if it's the opposite they'll be a mass exodus after Diamond Dave's last song.

But more to the point they are artists who put their art first and foremost and is an end in and of itself. Pearl Jam is pretentious and confused enough to interject their politics and world view into everything and LECTURES their audiences accordingly.

Thought it was a strong opening show for Conan. Obviously we'll have to wait and see how things turn out but the Biden/Sotomayor bit suggests he's not toning down the edginess too much yet. Only complaint is the sound--unless Eddie Vedder has laryngitis at the moment they need to adjust their audio controls.

    I already miss Late Night...

    by negator76

It had a great opening, but the show worries me a bit. I think the stage is too big... it feels like Conan is YELLING his lines, and it hurts his usual 'what-the-hell' delivery. The 'Hollywoo' bit was bland as all hell. Ferrell actually made the show come alive, and took more risks than Conan did. It's a little disconcerting when the GUEST is funnier than the host. Plus, NOT ONE of Conan's signature bits or bizarre characters made an appearance. I guess I have to give it a chance, he is sort of re-introducing himself. But I wish he, the writers, and the studio would have a little more faith in the large fanbase the man has built up over the last 17 years. I didn't feel like there was anything in there for longtime fans of 'Late Night'. We'll have to wait for him to settle into the new show, I think. After all, he was a twitchy, nervous wreck when he first took over Dave's show. And we all saw how that turned out.

    by malik23

Conan seemed a little off his game. Needs to work on his timing with Andy. Andy seemed giddy and pointless. Too many taped bits. Will was the only funny part of the show. All the cracks at Jurassic Park T-Rex survival tips are hilarious. I can't wait to see his movie. I have no idea why anyone still listens to a band as bland and monotonous as Pearl Jam. My god. I can play a bar chord on the guitar; I could be a Pearl Jam guitarist, too. I can play repetitive one-note bass lines; I could be a Pearl Jam bassist. They've had a decade and a half to learn, grow, and develop, and that's all the come up with??? Jesus, that's drunken garage band noise, not "one of the world's best bands," in Conan's words. Hey, guitarists of the world, if you can't learn how to play anything besides bar chords by your 40s, maybe you should give it up already and just admit that this instrument is way too complicated for you to understand that there are actually OTHER ways to put your fingers on the fretboard besides this one, standard chord that is the very first one that every kid learns. Oh, never mind, dumb shits will still buy it as long as EV screams over the top of it. Carry on.

I can forgive a band some technical problems. It happens. by diggernick

You can make an argument about Green Day and Mayer I suppose, but c'mon, Herc. Pearl Jam had one good record and they just remastered it. Cheryl Crowe? You're comparing her to Joe Satriani? Any musician that read that had to get up and remove the gold brick from their pants. As for tonight's show. The taped stuff and Will were the best parts. Andy needs to be on the couch because he seems pretty useless and Conan just kept talking over him. Maybe if he wasn't half a mile away they could get some kind of flow going with each other. Pearl Jam sucked as usual. Eddie looks like he's blowing a load when he sings, and who knows, maybe he is. Jeff needs to get that stupid had from 1992 back because the glare off of his bald spot was causing lens flares. That is all.

well, given that most of their albums after the first sound completely different from each other, there is always stuff you will like and not like. This sounds a lot different than most of what ive heard from them other than the simple, punkish sound they mess with on often, which is no suprise. I dont know why you would expect complex arrangements from a simple thrashing rock song. some of their songs are complex, some simple. Their last few albums dont do much for me, until i hear them live. they are ten times better live than what i heard there. not used to them playing short 2 1/2 minute songs. most of there songs go on for ten minutes and they play for around 3 hours.

    by thrillho77

Yes, it wasn't a deep, meaningful, or epic song. It was written as a punchy, easily digestible rock tune. A song filled with energy, meant to get you jumping up and down. That's its purpose. It may not be your style, but it was well-written, musically, in regards to what it wants to do. It took me a couple more listens to really appreciate it though.

Well, I open myself up for criticism by listing my favorite bands, but what the hell. Fire away. My favorite band is Rush. I love King Crimson. Tool. Bands who can play in more time signatures than 4/4. But I went to college in the 90s, so I'm not completely untouched by the music that came out of the PNW at that time. Soundgarden wasn't bad. I also listen to a lot of jazz fusion, but I'm not a complete musical snob. I like the classic rock bands like Led Zepplin and Van Halen, too.

I'll give PJ some credit for sticking with it and doing what they love. God bless them. But it takes more than a few chords played moderately fast to equal "rocking" in my book. If you want to see some old guys still cranking out fantastic new music and playing their asses off (3 hour shows with no opening act), check out Rush's Snakes and Arrows concert Blu-ray. Three musical virtuosos at the top of their game, playing circles around guys half their age.

    My aunt likes Ferguson

    by american mythos

... until she realized his shit every single night is the same as the night before. I mean, how often can you play with the camera, do half ass readings of fan emails (Craig himself doesn't even seem into it), and shout out "B-d-leep-leep-leep, b-d-leep-leep-leep, b-d-leep-leep-leep - this just in folks, it's a great day in America"? I mean, really, he needs to change it up some. Ferguson is famous for taking a bit and beating it until it's a corpse, then reanimating it and beating it some more -- only this time the corpse is a zombie and can't be killed. Seriously though, I like Craig - way better than Fallon, but change the menu once in a while.

    And about Conan last night

    by american mythos

It was a great show. You could tell Conan was trying to hold back on some of his more habitual and tired antics (he only did the hip string dance once, and cut it off abruptly), but the opening cross-country run was awesome, the trolly tour not so much, the Ford Taurus video was great. I think now that Conan's re-intro'd himself to old fans and said hello to a new audience, we should see him hit his stride on night 2. Hopefully we'll see more of Andy and Max involved in the scripted parts. Definitely the best Tonight Show in 17 + years.

And about Letterman and older viewers

    by american mythos

I like his interviews, but that's about his only strength. I think he'll attract more older viewers than Conan because older people are more comfortable with routine, which is what Letterman is about. The Top 10 List -- need I say more?

Good point about giving more of PJ's material a try. I hate it when people trash a band when they haven't even listened to most of their work. So, guilty as charged. Honestly, I was a real dick last night. I shouldn't have crapped so hard over a band that a lot of people like. I don't normally comport myself in such a manner, but there's something about an AICN talkback that brings it out . . . :) Like I said, Pearl Jam is still doing what they love, making money with their music. So even if I don't like it, I've got to give them props.

had the show for 17 years. he was funny maybe 5% of that time, buried in rim shots and music. The band members from start to finish looked incredibly uncomfortable playing along with his lame, tired weak jokes. I am glad the show has been reformatted a bit and got rid of 90% of the "Leno" was was nothing compared to Carson.

Loved Conan calling Leno his "lead in"

    by m00kiedood

Conan said "We're very happy to continue to have Jay Leno as our lead in" or something.

It kind of sounded to me like a back handed compliment that was actually a nice little dig -- like Leno is now the host of a little show that'll be leading into the REAL show, kind of putting Leno in his place.

    by drunken busboy

Because if you have then you would never dump on him! "I Can't Drive 55" is to Sammy Hagar what "Touch of Grey" is to the Greatful Dead or Jump is to Van Halen w/Roth. Their biggest hits but not necessarily their best!

Also since this is a movie fan site think about all the cool movies Sammy Hagar has contributed songs too! Heavy Metal, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Footloose just to name a few.

Also food for thought, in 50 years which Eddie V. will people still talk about Eddie Vedder or Eddie Van Halen? Eddie Van Halen for sure. Than man just about single handedly brought in the Hard Rock wave of 80's!

Van Halen could have been bigger than Jesus, but they had too much trouble along the way. Now they are known more for their lead singer clashes and Eddie's bullshit more than anything. it sucks, but its true. no doubting Eddie Van Halen is a rock god. PJ did a good job of morphing from 'next big thing' to heavy touring jam band.

Not having any clue who he is though, the average viewer's not going to be as charitable and I wouldn't expect to hear it so prominently in a while. Conan already seems way more relaxed, and the 'Rodeo Road' idea was gold, as was the hyper-aggressive 'Twitter' feature. I didn't initially read that as a dis on Fallon, but it does make sense. Fallon's bits in which he makes a big deal about incorporating the internet look so desperate. It's like he's screaming at you, 'Don't you get it? I'm hip and young(ish) because I use the interweb as part of my show!' Gross. The NYTimes said it best: 'Fallon is an old person's idea of a young, hip comedian'. Anyway, Go Conan! I already see 'Late Night' shining through. Once the ratings prove positive, the big red bird will be up and running and feeling free to do his freak thing, and I'm all for it. Andy's already shown improvement, and tonight there was even a gay La Bamba bit!

Craig Ferguson also spent most of his show last night riffing on the need to be "cool", "edgy" and "hip for the kids". In his monologue, he showed a supposed photo of Kim Jong il's kid, which was just Kim Jong himself with a backwards baseball cap and an 'I Love Fallon" T shirt on. Wouldn't it be great if O'Brien and Ferguson were engaged in co-ordinated subterfuge to show up Fallon for the complete tool he really is?

    by mst3kpimp

And i dint like it. Its like they just water everything down and then amplify it for a mass audience. Letterman did the same thing when he moved to CBS, people were so excited at first but after a while realized he was using formula and his once minimalist offbeat
sketches and ideas that packed a punch at NBC now seemed forced and stale. Conan cannot count on Will Ferrel saving him every night and the hype will settle and then the
people will demand more. Right now the show feels like when he would
do a week of shows in Boston. Exciting but not especially funny.
