Cool News
Fuck You TIME WARNER AUSTIN! I want HDNET & HD MOVIES back like yesterday!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... I'm pissed. After watching the TWILIGHT MOVIE AWARDS on MTV - I decided to try and watch some Blu Rays. It seems that Lionsgate and MGM/FOX's Blu-Rays on films in the last 2 weeks have decided not to be compatible with my Blu Ray player. Joy. All the other companies' Blu-Rays play wonderfully, but something new in the mastering process is fucked and this is probably going to require me to get a new player... again. Joy. Even though until the last month, it has faithfully played every single Blu Ray disc I've gotten.
So then, I decide... ok, let's see what's on HD Cable. My Cable provider is TIME WARNER Austin. And as I'm going through the movie channels - my continual disappointment at a lack of good movies on HBO, CINEMAX and SHOWTIME aggravates me. So I skip past to where my favorite channel USED to reside... HD MOVIES. That channel has the best titles available online, uninterrupted - at least until the glorious day that TCM HD becomes a reality.
Turns out - TIME WARNER AUSTIN has decided to DICK its loyal customers around by not renewing Mark Cuban's HD NET and HD MOVIES. I've been a customer for about 12 years now. I've put up with their outtages as just a tech issue, but these sorts of problems really tick me off. Last year I had to deal with them shafting us with NBC for way too long. It really just is too much.
I really hope all of you locals affected call and give Time Warner a piece of your mind. I have - and will again!

I hope
-
I too noticed the change. Shit. At least I got to record Godfather I and II before they shut 'em down.
-
I was at a restaurant a couple of weekends ago when it was pouring rain outside. The TVs in the bar were all saying, "We have temporarily lost signal" or something like that. I'll stay with TW, thanks.
-
Anyone know why they dumped the HDNet channels?
-
I've been screwed by the same power play here. To make matters worse, I have little recourse switching to a competitor, since I'm re-compensated for my internet use through my employer, who requires TWC. Anyway, after hitting a brick wall with the operators at Time Warner, I wrote to info@hd.net to hear their side of the story. 2 hours later, I received a reply from an address identifying the sender as Mark Cuban himself! As this will only further his cause, I hope he won't mind me pasting his brief note: "we cut their price dramatically. They still didnt want to do a deal. Im not quite sure why. Pls call and ask for the general mgr, not customer service and let them know how you feel
and try to convice the boss to go to directv, verizon, dish or att
thx
m" -
Waste of time. I have HD Comcast if I ever feel to need to watch some shiny ass movie.
-
Like *groundwork* I too contact Mark Cuban and got a very pleasant response. The deal is that Cuban wanted HDNet and HDNet Movies as part of TWC's basic tier not their bonus "HD Tier." TWC balked. So now we're paying extra for MGMHD (good), UniversalHD (not great-- movies are blah and are interrupted with commercials), and the new "SmithsonianHD" and "Crime & Investigation HD," which seems to consist of "Crossing Jordan" repeats in HD. And some new SpikeTV-esque thing called MAVHD (I think) that is supposed to be borderline unwatchable that comes to us in late August. I'm switching to DirecTV at the end of the month. Between the shitty customer service, frequent Internet outages and now TWC talking about bandwidth caps again after already beings spanked by the government, I'm finally giving these bastards the boot.
-
I hate to state the obvious, but have you upgraded your player's firmware? I have a LG BH200 HDDVD/Blu-Ray combo player that's handled practically everything with flying colors, including so-called "problem" discs like THE WRESTLER.
-
I was just looking for that channel a minute ago, and was disappointed like you Harry. They played really good movies too! The Godfather part 1 and 2 Cool Hand Luke This really pisses me off!
-
scaring me off bluray. I still don't own a player and I advised my parents not to get one (yet). Noooo I don't want to be their cost free tech support on movie rental night. Come on guys, if a customer is kind enough to fork over dollars for your movie, MAKE SURE IT GODDAMN PLAYS.
TWC is nothing but used douche, but Comcast is worse. All those cable operators deserve to be gummed by a toothless gypsy. Rot in hell, TWC and Comcast! -
Unforgiven Chariots of Fire 12 Monkeys Malcolm X Passage to India Lawrence of Arabia Paths of Glory And so on, and so on... It may be time for Direct TV.
-
You know the rest
-
Well who has the upper claw now? Seriously though, TimeWarner sucks.
-
yes, make the new blurays unplayable in previous players when the hacked versions of those blurays on the net are playable anywhere... so far, I'm thankful that I got my PS3 as bluray player, I was sure Sony wouldn't let down their costumers. They never failed to me, yet. That's why I always pick Nokia as cell, Sony for anything else. And no, I'm not getting paid for this.
-
this includes me. for everyone whose neighborhood hasn't been lit up by Verizon, why on earth aren't you with DirecTV?
-
FiOS
-
Bad-really bad. Oh, they have good customer service but they nail you to the cross every month. I switched to Directv a few years ago, and though it's not perfect, it's better than TW. Beware though, Directv is owned partly by FOX and I've heard ATT just bought 33 percent. Maybe Grande Communications will be the way to go. As for blu, just buy a ps3, Harry. It'll update the player as needed.
-
if you are going to spend 40-120 a month on channels might as well get the ones you want.
-
It is all of Time Warner. I live in NC and got the notice that HDNet and HDNet Movies were going away on Saturday. By last night they were gone. I loved HDNet Movies and now I have Smithsonian HD and Hallmark HD instead. Fuck Time Warner indeed.
-
Depending on your player, you may be able to update it with a firmware upgrade. The newer ones can connect to the internet to get the update, or you can contact the manufacturer and get an upgrade disc. As for the Time Warner problem, does AT&T Uverse carry HDNET? If so, maybe it's time to make the switch...
-
get that fucking Bluray player onto the new and grad the latest firmware.
You fucking sound like my brother who has his TV on stretch-pic because else he would have black bars on 4:3 TV.
Oh my gosh... I cant believe it. And this thread comes from someone who calls himself a geek. -
Not happy. Trying to leave but Fios or Uverse are not coming in until next year. As for Direct TV I live in one of 2 areas of the country that are not allowed local channels via dish due to some fucked up law that favors local stations. Until that changes it is ridiculous because you have to use an antenna for locals or have them through cable anyway. Not happening. You can still get the networks, but you have to pay extra and they come out of LA or New York. I'm holding out for Fios.
-
But the blu ray thing just makes people want to pirate. Firmware upgrades for grandma. Yeah, really fucking sharp.
-
when Dish Network dropped the VOOM HD channels I wanted to fucking cry, Monsters HD is probably the coolest tv channel I've ever seen (and I only got to watch it for a few months)
-
How is your old BluRay player and your digital tv in any way cool news? Update your friggin' player or buy one new enough to support firmware updates. "You can do it!"
-
yeah a long time ago... I used to have Dish Network... I don't think they check... I remember the law distantly... they asked me if I had local channels or some shit and I lied and said no... it was good enough for them.
-
Two good channels. Love that I got to see Girlfriend Experience a couple of weeks ago for free. Next up Surveilance in June.

Cable TV is a public utility, should be locally regulated
by brandloyalist
It's a natural monopoly, like sewage (often, a whole lot like sewage). That is, unless you'd like to see 2, 3, 4 sets of coax lines running over/under your streets. Cable TV and internet are clearly public utility, but since the Telecom Reform Act (thanks Bill) the mofos have been free to price a lot of the public right out of the market since 96. And where's the a la carte pricing, you shameless gouging bastards? That kind of pricing probably would have kept your HD Net around Harry. John McCain has actually been on our side for years on that one.
-
Even the HD you are getting from them is degraded in ways that are insulting and unacceptable (they will still charge you for the "upgrade" though!). They have ridiculous monopolies and fight municipalities that are fed up with their aged networks and that try to install fiber to make themselves competitive. After I experienced Comcast's sorry excuse for HD programming and preposterous and arbitrary monthly rate increases I switched to DirecTV. I only wish FIOS was available here but it looks like it's never going to happen.
-
I just got really sick of them. They always have disputes with networks as their contracts end. We didn't have NBC for I don't know how long. They refuse to carry the NFL network, etc etc. So I am not the least surprised that they are still jerking people around. I have Direct tv now and it's lightyears ahead of TWC austin.

If I discover a blu-ray disk that won't play, I'll return it!!!
by jdanielp
Seriously, I will not buy another player. If new disks won't play, it's back to download and/or other methods. I will not buy a new player because a studio changed the rules. Fuck you!
-
Fox & MGM are the worse culprits as they seem to update their BD Java & BD PRofile 2.0 titles every release so they need constant firmware updates. If you have a PC to watch BD on then you also need to continually update your graphics drivers to include the latest HDCP encryption keys.
-
Used to, they were 24 hours a day. But they kept cutting it back to the point where you couldn't get someone on the phone, or they would do this "Callback" thing so you wouldn't lose your place in line. Actually I still have to deal with them because they are literally the only option I have for high speed internet. Uverse and FIOS are not in my area.
-
So pissed. It was my favorite HD movie channel.
-
PROS: I have ripped my entire dvd collection to external hard drives. I have 3 2Tb drives and a 500 Gb (for...Divx... movies...hush! You do it too!) usb'd into it. Plus wifi built in for streaming. I wish it would work better for Hulu, but with everything else it does I can't complain too much. And it updates via that same wifi (or ethernet if you're wired). And with mkv to vob you pirates can watch HD movies you download. Not that I condone that sort of thing. But the way I look at it, until I can rip my Blu Ray discs, I'll download them to store as backup.
CONS: Fucking Fat32 format. Fat32 has a 4Gb limitation. I have to rip movies to two files and I can't make a playlist in video. This means I can't watch a whole movie uninterrupted. It stops, you hit stop, cycle to part two of the file and hit play. It's not as bad as it sounds but it's still something I'd like to see overcome.
Oh and Fuck Time Warner! -
Back when they "added" a whole bunch of HD channels in time for the digital changeover in December, they killed HD Net and HD Movies. The good news is they added 27 HD sports channels (joy. If it ain't Women's Rollerderby, I could give two tugs off of a dead dog's dick about sports.) or I can now watch Jon & Kate exploit their 8 kids or The Real Housewives of Whogivesafuck. But HD Movies? I guess RCN thinks I can go fuck myself. I'd switch, but Comcast will automatically turn off my internet if I use bittorrent and the mayor of my city won't let Fios in (Thanks, Mumbles!)
-
Kinda funny that AICN didn't have the skinny but a wrestling website does.
-
In Florida.
No warning, no notice..nothing. Just yet another channel yanked by Time/Warner with no warning.
First the caps on broadband usage, then Fearnet got yanked, now HdNet.
Instead of HdNet, we got Smithsonian Chanell and some crap called Mave TV. Nice trade assholes!
And let's not even get into the awful software interface for the cable boxes, where you get NO useful information whatsoever and frequent breakups in the picture.
Time to pull the plug on Time Warner cable. -
I just got off the phone with Brighthouse and they claimed they are still in negotiations with HD Net. The more logged complaints, the more likely they will settle and HD Net returns to the air on Brighthouse. CALL AND BITCH NOW!!!
-
I noticed HDnet was gone as soon as the channel was off the digital menu. And I'm Pissed! Reservoir Dogs is in HD this month! And a bunch of other good movies, too! TW's HD channel line-up sucks balls! HDnet was the one place for good, uncut HD movies. Now it's gone! Here's who you can write to:
Time Warner Cable, Customer Care Communications, 900 N. Cahuenga Blvd., L.A., CA, 90038. I complained as soon as I noticed. Don't bother calling to complain: there's nobody who'll listen. They're not set up for it. Time Warner is the fucking worst cable provider and they just got shittier! -
That is a real thing? I though it was just some scam carp in the weekly penny saver. No more Ultimate Trailer Show for you!
-
I'm getting really sick of being the only person in my life who has any sort of clue about how to watch HD movies.
Every single person I know with an HDTV has that shit on "zoom" mode where the picture is actually bigger than the screen, because occasionally they watch some letterboxed or pillarboxed content and they want it to "fill the screen". Then a show or disc comes on that would fill a 1.78 screen, but the image is stretching off the screen and people's heads are shaped wrong, and they don't even fucking notice. Fucking idiots.
Most people I know with blu-ray have 120FPS settings on their TV which they don't know how to disable, which makes their blu-rays look like fucking soap operas. They also usually pick the Sports settings preset, which blows out contrast and makes it way too bright, because "it looks the best".
Also have noticed that the majority of people with surround speakers have a stereo-only connection between the player and the receiver/amp (usually the audio cables from their DVD or VHS setup). Then the receiver uses some bullshit up-mixing (usually Pro-Logic) to get "awesome surround sound", which if you listen closely to a rear speaker, sounds a complete mess. Corrollary to this, people put their rear speakers in the stupidest fucking places, and almost always well below ear level.
-
I agree with you Harry, TW in Dallas dropped the same two channels and replaced them witrh the "Smithsonian Channel" (ZZzzzzz) and the "Mavericks Basketball Channel" which is even worse! Put the movies back on TW!!!!!
-
I can't believe it's gone! Does anyone have any idea who to call for complaints in Austin?
-
Get a Dish
-
I probably should have emailed this to Harry like a month ago. TWC has a spot on their website that lists upcoming additions and deletions of channels. They had HDNET and HDMOV listed as deleted about a month ago. So sad, those channels were great, I remember MOJO tv leaving too a few months ago, another great channel gone. They had that great show about drinking on there, the guy with the little stuffed monkey, I forget what it was called.
-
That's the one. Great show.
-
Just go to the manufacturer's website.
-
is just flat out terrible, I watched it for a little while last night and it's bad.How can we fix this?
-
If you're only recently having trouble with discs from a particular studio. When I got my BD player there were constant "YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE" warnings but I never had any problems for 9 months until Firefly just refused to do anything. Installed an update and it worked fine.
Update process varies depending on model; for mine (the Sharp Aquos player) you download a file from the web site, copy it to a USB drive, and then boot up the player with the drive attached. -
I thought it was.
-
You didn't even say which player you have for christ sake. Vent on twitter so I and everybody else who has a brain won't see it.
-
The real news here is Time Warner cable pulling HD-Net. And no thats not cool news, that bad news for people that love movies.
-
Jun 01, 2009 9:38:30 AM CDT
Someone asked Harry, "How old is your Blu-ray player?"
by the reluctant austinite
Damn. How old is Blu-ray in general? Are you supposed to buy a new player every 18 months? I still refuse to jump in until some kind of standard is reached. People shouldn't have to update firmware every time a new release comes out. Non-geeks will be hopelessly confused as to why their new movies won't play, and players should be built to recognize when a disc needs a firmware update and display on onscreen prompt telling the user what the problem is and how to fix it.
-
Well ranted.
-
When they started with that tiered Internet bullshit (which they are continuing BTW) I was out. In my area DirectTV and Grande weren't an option, so I switched to AT&T U-Verse. I miss my TiVo but otherwise I couldn't be happier. Time to vote with your dollars and make a switch.
-
Nothing irritates me more than constantly upgradable "firmware." I want my consumer electronics to work THE FIRST TIME and EVERY TIME right out of the box. I don't want a "work in progress" when it comes to tech - especially not when the tech is as superfluous and expensive as HD/BR, etc.
-
Not only are they screwing us on cable, but soon there will be capped internet service. They've just added some wording to their contracts which allow them to cap service at any time: http://stopthecap.com/2009/05/28/theyre-back-time-warner-cable-adds-cap-n-tier-language-to-subscriber-agreements/
If I could dump them I'd do so in a heartbeat and go with Grande, but TWC is the only cable co I'm allowed in my apartment complex at the moment. :( -
and let me tell you, they sure suck balls. They don't care about their customers in the least bit, all they want you to do when you call is sell them on adding shit they don't want. I my case it was stupid phone service. People would call angry that their service had been out for two days, yet I was still required to try to sell them on switching to our "reliable" phone service.
-
I saw that coming from a mile away. They started doing tests in east Texas somewhere, and you knew it was coming to the major cities. If I understand correctly, Austin has been spared for now. There was a big uproar about it so they said they wouldn't do it. But don't think they won't try again.
-
if they are going to keep on making customer update firmware, why not include the update on the new Blu-ray disk? my 360 updates all the time, whenever I get a new game that requires the latest patch, it asks me if i want to update right at start up? so does my psp. Guess, they want people to assume its broken and go buy another player. Since sony can't sell Ps3 any other way.
-

So instead of sending an e-mail to their customer support
by ricarleite2
You created an AICN post.
-
Dern you you beat me to it! ya Harry i second you getting a PS3 its the best Blue ray player on the market.
-
You guys pay to not have your Bluerays working, to have to sit through anti piracy commercials that threaten you and so on and so on... I download everything, get the product plus non of the hassle. When the pirated product is superior to the legitimate one, what do you expect me to do?
-
Good god. I'm avoiding Blu-Ray for as long as possible. I was watching a plain ol' DVD of Whose Line Is It Anyway and when I noticed I could see how much the actors were sweating, I knew I was getting too much detail. And now Blu_Ray owners have to "update you hoo-dee-hoo or buy an new la-dee-dah.?" Fuck that. To be honest, I prefer the softness non-super-resolution media has - it helps distance myself from it, so I'm drawn into the fiction. I don't want Luke Skywalker to look lso real it's like my next-door neighbor in my living room.
-
I've only had my BD player for about 5 months and haven't encountered a need for a firmware update yet but it will be an obstacle for adoption if they don't find an easier way to deliver updates for technophobes and luddites (on disc, etc.). My player has an ethernet port but I'm still not running my connection anywhere close to my television so it will be a minor clusterf>>> when I have to do it. People should not be put off on BD over this stuff though - if you are letting that stop you from watching BD's on your HDTV you are truly missing out.
-
I just read a news story about it, and its fucking BULLSHIT. http://tinyurl.com/q8blnf They say that there is a "limited appeal" for the programming of HD Net. Bullshit. Yeah, showing movies on one channel and tv shows, concerts, and travel shows on another is limited. More limited, apparently, than a network called Smithsonian HD. Fucking jerkoffs. I'm pissed. I'll definitely be writing to Time Warner. I'll be that asshole that sends a letter everyday.
-
Honestly, if Harry HADN'T made this story, I would not have known the channels were dropped until the next time I was at my dad's house watching tv. So let's not insult him for bringing to light a story many film buffs would care about.

Gotta' Love Dish Network (sometimes). -
I hope their offices burn down. I mean, Creepshow, Army of Darkness, The Wild Bunch, Lawrence of Arabia? FUCK YOU TIME WARNER.
-
They are the single worst TV provider on the face of the earth. They take out the best channels and refuse to work with anyone, i.e. NFL Network, HDNet. I am sick of their excuses. The worst part is, I have no choice. I HAVE to use them. My apartment does not face the right direction for satellite, and we cannot put it on the roof. That leaves us with Time Warner. I've had other services, and they have the worst DVR, worst service, and worst channels. I can't get U-Verse or VerizonFios because that would mean tearing up the ground. All I know is, when I get a house soon, Time Warner will never get another penny of mine. Fuck you Time Warner, Fuck you straight back to hell.
-
HDNET is gotta be out of business soon. I think they are basically trying to phase out any movie channels for free to get people onto the premium tiers.
-
PS3 is really the best choice for blu rayers, because of the system updates.
-
The only reason I stay is for the internet. Waiting for fios...Oh and people that repeatedly bitch about Bluray...we get it. Stay off my lawn, etc.
-
I'm just returning the cable box.Downgrading to a basic subscription gets me the news, which is all I really watch anyway; and it saves me $30/month.
-
I don't watch any of the HD channels. I had completely forgotten that I get HD movies until my Dad reminded me last week. Needless to say, I'm waiting until I find out if TWC is actually going to charge a fee based on bandwidth. If they do, then I'll switch to AT&T Uverse, since you can supposedly record a show in one room, and then watch it in another! :D
Time Warner Cable...well, let's just say I'm not exactly their biggest fan. -
And be glad you didn't buy a Samsung BDP1200 like me - I have to upgrade that cunt every months for the past year - every new release seems to need a new firmware upgrade - fuckers.
-
I thought Blu-Ray firmware upgrades were only so the more worthless extra features could be used. Because anytime I've had something pop up that said "update required for content" I hit CANCEL. And then the movie just plays.
-
Fuck you, TW. You suck-ass monopoly. I'm thinking about skipping television altogether. You shouldn't have to pay 130+ for TV and internet. It's almost as criminal as 13-20 dollar CDs.
-
I believe differing implementations of the BD java by the studios cause this. The players must load this software first before they can play the disc. The software in the players are different obviously due to different hardware configurations, etc so the updates for the players can't come on the discs themselves but must come from the OEM. Usually a disc iso download then burn and play and play a file from a usb key. Typically short and painless...
-
PS3 is great cause of wireless networking and of course more than enough space for the BD 2.0 spec...other manufacturers should add wireless making for painless FW updating and should add it just for this reason alone...
-
Most apartments around where I live, you have to sign 12 month lease, or your rent will get jacked up to high heaven. So, when that lease is up, I am gone!
-
They were going to be playing Army of Darkness all month in beautiful HD. Damn you Time Warner. That was the only good HD channel.
-
Maybe if this talkback becomes a big deal, they'll rethink this staggeringly stupid mistake.
-
I am a victim of their raping as well. I will call numerous times.
-
Www.nukethefridge.com
-
Fuck you Time Warner.
-
Enjoy the best service 1998 has to offer. fuck you TW
-
So does every cable company I've ever had.
-
Let me refer you to dish Network.
You'll get a free install, and I'll get a $50 credit.
Their current top DVR (722K), allows you to record 4 HD streams at once (2 sat feeds, two OTA feeds), they have 1080P Video-On-Demand, and their upcoming 922 DVR has slingbox technology built-in.
-
Really, even if you don't play any PS3 games, it is hands down the best Blu-ray player. Cnet uses the PS3 as the standard for blu-ray player comparisons. Plus a bluetooth DVD remote is just da'bomb. No more aiming. Oh and FU TW Cable. Just sayin.
-
bios flash fix maybe?
-
The PS3 hasn't been the best bluray player in months, maybe even a year. There are far better players on the market now, and I'm so tired of people hawking a machine that costs $400 when there are good players at $200. Every single bluray player that's 1.1 and above can be upgraded via firmware not just the fucking PS3. The PS3 was great at the beginning of the bluray march, not so much now.

Time Warner Cable Vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers
by anything but tangerines
Here in L.A. we had FSN Prime ticket in HD, which during baseball season would broadcast most Dodger games in HD, unless they conflicted, for ANY amount of time with an Angels game to be broadcast by Fox Sports, in which case the dodgers would be on FSN and there is no FSN HD only FSPT. NOW they got rid of that entirely! No Dodgers or even Angels games in HD, unless they are on KCAL, Fox or ESPN. So, to review, the Dodgers are summarily kicking the asses of Major League Baseball in general, ranked #1 in NL with the best record in MLB and Time Warner thinks now is a good time to say "Fuck You, watch this blurry shit" to L.A. baseball.
-
We used to have mgmHD and HDnet movies... but they were dropped... I wrote in...twice... they did add encore hd...
currently unavailable to me as a comcast HD subscriber:
HDnet movies, The Movie Channel HD, Starz Comedy HD, Starz Edge HD, MGM HD -
fuck blu ray......when they stop making dvd's then I'll jump ship......until then make mine marvel......ps comcast sucks dick cheneys dead dick.
-
They're going to start charging by the gb for bandwidth. Total bullshit. I'm pretty much done with them when I move out of my place in July.

And here's the proof:
“The Smithsonian Channel HD has been one of the top requested HD channels and we are excited to be able to offer it to our customers,” says Gavino Ramos, vice president of communications for Time Warner Cable. “We are also excited to offer MavTV HD, a network that includes original programming such as Ultimate Combat Experience plus sports such as AMA Motorcycle Racing and Lucas Oil Motorsports Events.”
I'm sold. -
I have heard that when CRITERION masters a blu-ray disc, they do it to the PS3 as the best player out there. Them there CRITERION boys know what they're doing, and this was my closing in an argument with the b/f as to why we don't need a regular blu-ray player and a PS3.
As for the cable wankery... I have comcast now (not by my choice) and am hoping to convince the b/f to go back to DirectTv or Dish. Dish's DVR is crazy huge with space, so that is probably the one we'll get. The one from Comcast we have right now is 50 hours only. Lame. And this is with their (not as degraded as previously)HD package. Why, oh why, can't we get a la carte cable/sat choices? I will NEVER watch some crappy ol' Lifetime for Women (despite being one).... or QVC. Can't I just pay for what I DO want? It's crazy... to think that might happen. Well, hope springs eternal. -
Fuck Time Warner, I'm gonna switch to Direct TV!
-
The chances of seeing these channels back are pretty slim. I work for TWC and the call center in my division says they haven't gotten one single call yet about those channels being dropped.
-
Is the lack of choice. Very few places in NYC can you anything other than Time Warner ONLY or Cablevision ONLY. RCN overlaps a couple of areas but seriously they don't feel the need to give a fuck about you cause your choice them or the dishes and some building will give you problems for a dish. And cable modem destroys DSL. So they are like "You don't like ok bye bye".
-
Basically its a dish network setup. You gotta have basic dish network or direct tv service. Point your dish to the southerrn sky, input a code from an online forum, then BOOM, you get free cable, HD, porn, Pay per view, fucking Al Jazeera channel from the middle east, British TV, so many channels that you'll probably spend a whole day browsing through them.

The rest of us have been hating on Time-Warner for years.

DUH! Whenever I have a problem I run an update check and everything runs just fine. Maybe you should connect your player up to the web?
-
I have a brand new PS3, no broadband, no WiFi, no direct means of upgrading my firmware. I put in RISE OF THE LYCANS and instead of playing the movie it prompts me to upgrade the firmware. I click the prompt and BOOM I was able to upgrade the firmware directly from the Lycan blue-ray disc. Now thats the way to upgrade.
-
...I swear the whip never stops cracking people. I got my br player over a year ago and I had to update my firmware once! ONCE! Can you believe that? I mean holy shit, I quit working asshole thankless jobs when I was a teenager and yet here I am being forced into obviously slavery by having to update my firmware...not zero times but one time! And of course you know one time is one time too many!Plus! You won't believe the audacity of this one...I had to take a cotton cloth and wipe off a disc! Now that's absolutely forced labor! I mean here I was minding my own business watching shitty SD movies 4:3 and then I bought all the lies and deceit and purchased a blu-ray player and it's been 100% submission and slavery ever since.Great picture though. Trudat.

2 years ago when I switched to DirecTV, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I get all channels (HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz etc.), except sport stuff for a little over a hundred a month. With Time Warner I would have to pay more than twice that for the channels. I am still stuck with TW with Roadrunner so if someone have a better recommend for high speed internet, let me know.
-
I had my house built a couple years ago and AT&T said u-verse wasn't in my area yet. So I went with Direct TV. Wasn't 6 months later and at&t calls me telling my u-verse is now available. I'm like thanks you fucks. I'm locked into a contract now. Plus I have this lovely dish now sitting on my roof. Bastards.
-
DirecTV's SD picture is far better than the HD picture I was getting from Cox, which compresses the shit out of all the channels to increase capacity. As soon as CATV's all moved to Switched Video, that might change a little, but for now, the analog basic channels take up too much space. Its obvious that TW wants to force its HD customers to pay premiums for non-simulcast channels, but Cox does the exact thing, too. DirecTV has its HD Tier, as well, but I understand its served from a separate satellite and requires additional overhead to operate, but the quality is unmatched at this time. UVerse? AT&T went the cheap route and has chosen to deploy it in a lot of areas it shouldn't have been, and its super-dependent on proximity to COs or RTs for smooth delivery. Uverse is subject to packet loss, frozen picture periods far worse than DTV/DishNet. FIOS is mainly a fiber to the premises installation, but those fiber lines go to a shared node (like cable) and when you stack HDTV, SDTV, and Hi-Speed Internet on a shared node like that, it will eventually cause a choking effect like cable has today. In the end, I like my TV from satellite, though. Harry, check out DTV.
-
I kid you not. Some farm channel and a museum channel. Like you actually want to watch 30 year old Hee Haw on what used to be the best HD channel out there. First IDHD died, now this. And still no Nickolodean, SciFi or G4 HD.
-
It's da bom
-
get off your fat ass and move around once a month.
-
you're a luck sumbitch
-
Harry, use your street cred and get an AICN-HD Channel started. Cable TV is an antiquated concept. We should be able to pay $X for X number of channels of our choice. Why should I continue to have to pay for channels I never watch like QCV, The Golf Channel, The Jewelery Network, The Green Channel. For a set price I should be able to pick the channels I want and be freed of the ones I don't want. Harry, you could run the Butt numb a thon so that the masses could watch it from their homes. You could have a TV show with the latest news. It would be cool. Start the revolution, Harry. Be the ball.
-
DirecTV has more HD than anybody else, hands-down. Before I moved, I had a 55" HD CRT projection, which would be almost 6-years-old by now. Had DirecTV on it and sold it to my brother-in-law before moving (damn thing was too big to move 1000 miles and I got an excuse to buy a flat-panel), went to visit him and watched my old TV with crappy cable. It looked like crap, compared with the way it used to look with my DirecTV. They now have on-demand services, just like cable, every year I get Sunday ticket to watch my favorite team play (by handle you can guess which one), and yes, with the older equipment, you used to get frequent blackouts during heavy downpours, but with the newer hardware it is severely reduced. Plus: seldom is there any repair that would necessitate a visit from a repairman. Call me a plant if you want, but it's my favorite thing in my house. I love my DirecTV. Alice Cooper Stalker: would love to have al a carte programming too.
-
I'm skeptical of anything that requires updates. It'll be constant breakage. Whether it's deliberate or incompetence, I don't know; but bugs will multiply, and multiply... I wouldn't be surprised if there is some way to construct a malicious disk that hides a destructive firmware patch.
The whole business just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. -
Now how will you watch Robert Wilonsky act like a douche?!?!?!?!?!?!
-
They replaced HD Net and HD Net Movies with shitty ass Hallmark HD, MavHD and Smithsonian HD. At least they added MGM HD. The TW lady told me that they couldn't reach and aggreement with HD Net. I've been inclined to blame TW in the past but lately they have really stepped up their customer service in this area and have been aggressive in adding new HD channels. The fact that they had HD Net for at least the last several years makes me think that Mark Cuban wanted more money to renew the broadcast rights and TW told him to kiss their ass. Just my 2 cents. I'm pissed like everyone else.
-
According to Time Warner, "There's a limited appeal for the programming. In a world with more than 100 HD channels, being in HD is not enough. We are adding other channels in HD to give our customers more choice". I wasn't really concerned since I can't afford to pay for HD channels, right now, but I was interested in the story. I can't get Dish because the management of my apartment won't let us have it. In a way it upsets me because cable is screwing everybody over. But I never liked having satellite. I had it once and it never worked. I will admit that it probably wasn't installed properly, but even still, I hate to lose my TV anytime a little rain comes through. The cable company I dealt with in my last place (I lived on a college campus) used DirectTV to receive their programming which they distributed. Every time a little rain would come through, we'd lose our programming. It sucked, especially when Lost was on. I think something needs to be done with the cable companies to keep the prices down. Our city government was trying to step in a while back, but nothing got done about it. But that was when Adelphia had went bankrupt and we were waiting for them to be bought out. Time Warner took over and now we have jacked up prices that you have to sign a contract for and if you break that contract, you have to pay a fee. And you have to continually renew the contract or lose service. So in other words, they say they're locking in the price, but they're really just locking you into their service because the fine print of the agreement says they can raise the price a certain amount every time you renew your contract (which is every year).
-
not really
-
that's when it comes to games.most of the exclusive games are lackluster with the exception of Infamous. Most of my games are for the 360 anyway. However it makes for a good blu ray player and streaming device. (providing you have a library of divx files.)Harry, you DO know about updating your player via firmware RIGHT? go to the manufacture's site, download and burn on a disc then pop it in your BR.that simple.
-
If they could-I couldn't believe the charges. Directv isn't perfect-I've had issues with some of the receivers superheating (recalled and replaced quickly) but Directv does have a better picture plus the NFL Ticket. Friends across the street have Uverse and the pic just froze up. After nearly an hour of waiting on hold for a customer service rep resetting the Uverse receiver it worked. But an hour waiting? Directv is much better than Uvers or TW.

Excellent. I needed a laugh this morning.

Hey kids, want your TV to not work whenever a summer storm rolls through? The time when *gasp* you actually are most likely to be indoors and watching TV? Well, get DirecTV! What a piece of shit, glad I got regular cable and never looked back at that unreliable bullshit. Hell, the feed would sometimes go out when there wasn't a cloud in the sky! Not to mention that back in 2006 one of their updates bricked the box and I had to wait days until someone could come and give us a new one.
-
Comcast offered me a job as a customer service rep. $12 an hour (before taxes) working any shift they deemed....so one day I could be working from 7am to 3pm, the next it could be from 5pm to 1am. So
Eat Shit
DirecTV is the bomb...as long as it's not storming outside. When the storms come I just whip out the "Now Playing" list on TiVo and catch up (and plug in the Weather channel on the PC to make sure a tornado isn't going to blow us away).
Cable sucks. We were wired for FIOS a few weeks ago but it hasn't gone live yet. Too bad I'll be moving back to Louisville before they do turn it on or I might try it...because Louisville will be getting FIOS around 2100 AD.... -
what happened to my post? Oh well, I told Comcast to get fucked. I love my DirecTV. When it gets uber-cloudy I just hit the "Now Playing" list on TiVo and catch up, or gasp! play a DVD! The one beef I do have with DTV is the lack of "Local on the 8's" on TWC. But I just plug in the old laptop to the TV and can keep an eye on any approaching tornados or hurricanes. Who watches TV in Florida? Shouldn't you be at the beach, nailing the tourists???
-
Right! Most BR players can have their firmware updated as simply as playing a downloaded data file. My wife and I are satisfied with our Comcast HD. While the cable picture/sound is great...we are sold on the Comcast OnDemand features. There is nothing like watching LOST (without the commercials) any day of the week (and without having to manually record it).
-
say "Fuck you Time Warner" and spend 80$ on a 1TB HD, a good net connection and a JUST DOWNLOAD BLU RAY MOVIES!!!!! How long are you ppl going to let these companies rape your wallets by providing sub-par services at premium prices? Take a stand, grow some balls and quit acting like you owe these assholes anything. If they want my hard earned money, then they should quit acting like i dont have other options and lower their prices. i pay 50$ a month for high speed... why the fuck should i pay another 50 on top of that when i can stream or torrent ANY show/movie/music that they provide? If i REALLY love something i'll buy it and cross my fingers that the actual makers of said media get a few dollars for their trouble, but to think that i owe the corporate masters of the "artists" of today is absurd. now if you'll excuse me, i'm going to watch Terminator on blu ray... for free... because its older than me, I've seen it a kajillion times, i've bought the dvd 3 fucking times and paid to see all of the sequels in theaters so as far as i'm concerned i've paid my dues.
-
I finally left Comcast after they started charging for their best On-Demand channel, "Something Weird" - yes they actually have an ON-Demand channel dedicated to the "Something Wierd" catalog - from Betty Page to bizarre 1950's toy commercials. Verizon FIOS does not carry Something Weird, but other than that, it rules!
-
Congrats, TW, you mutherfuckers, you finally hit the last straw. Hello, Verizon FIOS?
-
have you heard of something called the millennium copyright act?
good luck returning it. -
...not because of the re-broadcasters (satellite & cable companies) but rather because of the content providers (Viacom, Fox, AOL-TW). DirecTV, Dish, cable comapnies, etc. pay the content providers (ie. Viacom or Fox or Time Warner) for the programming. The content providers force the re-broadcasters to carry an entire package of their programming as part of their contract. So for DirecTV to be allowed to show ESPN, for example, they must also include ABC-Family in their lineup or their prices will be hiked to the high heavens. Bulk Pricing at it's worst.
-
FUCKERS! As if Smithsonian HD and MavHD (more effin sports?!) will make up for it?
-
...and it does indeed suck. Those were two great channels, and had all sorts of neat surprises every month. The thing I'll miss the most is Inside MMA with Kenny Rohmeyer and Bass Rutten.
-
Blu Ray has and will always be a cluster fuck. Rushing it to market to be the bigger dick in the room to HD DVD assured it's failure from day one. (I'm not an HD DVD fanboy either) Sony doesn't know what BR is from day to day and neither do any other manufacturers. PS3 and their "updates" will not solve your problem either. One update that fixes a problem creates ten more not to mention the machine itself is an abortion in terms of picture and sound playback. It was never meant to be a standalone BR player. Just a trojan horse to launch their new format. ALL BR players have or will have issues at one time or another. Too bad because the format is gorgeous when it works and is done correctly. DirecTV pulled the same shit with their customers by slowly pulling channel after channel, HDNET movies was one of them, and up charging customers for an extra HD package. They just yanked Science Channel HD the other day. The reason they couldn't or haven't done it yet with HDNET is because of contracts, but that day will come too. HDNET movies came after the fact is why they can pull it at will. And how cool is/was MGM HD until DirecTV pulled and added a charge for it? Just Netflix and On Demand free shit until Sony and everyone with a monetary interest in the production side of the content suppliers start to lose their asses then you will start to get stuff for free. For example I cancel Showtime and now DirecTV rewards me with some BS for 3 months free for being a loyalty customer? I have no fucking loyalty to any content provider whatsoever, it's just Time Warner and COX suck more than DirecTV here in So. Cal.

You mean you didn't already know that Time-Warner SUCKS!!!!!!!!!
by citizen sane
Those assholes cut off ALL of my services for 4 days without warnimg, including my telephone land line (which is illegal, by the way), becuase thay detected a slight "signal leak", whatever the fuck that is. DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO GET OTHER SERVICE. I do not want satellite, so I am patiently waiting for Verizon or ATT to get their shit together.
-
Nicole here and I assure you that DISH Network would be a huge upgrade from Time Warner. I work for DISH so I know that they have the largest DVR hard drive in the industry, they offer free HD programming for life, and offer the ability to watch live TV everywhere on your mobile device with the Sling Adapter. Sadly Time Warner is no where near being this good.
