Cameron on AVATAR - 3D will be 1.85 to 1 and 2D will be full Scope - read why!
Hey folks, Harry here... with a report on the Q&A that James Cameron gave at the 70mm presentation of THE ABYSS and ALIENS in L.A. There's some fun stuff here - so give it a look!
Hey Harry,
This probably isn’t a scoop, but I thought it would qualify as “cool news” and wanted to send something in – here in L.A., film geeks had a veritable Sophie’s Choice tonight between the “Back to the Future” marathon at the New Beverly and a double feature of “Aliens” and “The Abyss” in 70MM with a James Cameron Q & A sandwiched in between at the grand old Aero Theatre (where Donnie Darko was shot). I chose the latter and don’t regret the decision (especially since they will also be doing a BTTF marathon tomorrow). Needless to say, a discussion about “Aliens” quickly became all about "Avatar" and though there was not a whole lot that wasn’t known before, it was pretty spellbinding to hear Cameron talk about this stuff. Here are some of the interesting tidbits:
- Cameron never thought he’d shoot a new movie in 1.85 ratio, but he loves the way 3D looks in that ratio, so audiences seeing the film in 3D will get a 1.78 presentation versus audiences who see the film in scope (widescreen) in 2D.
- He seemed unusually humble and said that “Avatar” may not make film history, but there are a few shots in the film that he knows for certain will be quite memorable, saying that he has his crew just got something back from the lab that made them say, “what the fuck?” (further fueling the “fucking our eyeballs” fire).
- He also said that the CG special effects aren’t necessarily revolutionary, but he believes that the way he’s shooting the film, with a camera that can give him and the actors instant feedback with a rendered image that loosely replicates what will be on screen in the final product, could very well change moviemaking. (He said the rendering looks like an “80’s video game” right now, but technology should advance to the point where it could look like the final product while they're filming on set.)
- When somebody asked about getting good performances out of the actors when they’re acting opposite a tennis ball, he said he didn’t see how it was any different than somebody auditioning for him in an office in Santa Monica, and that on his next film, whatever that may be, he should be able to create a rig where an actor could be interacting with a monitor that could provide a virtual acting partner (with a voice) – he said it was just too expensive for this one for too few scenes.
-When asked about the future of exhibition, he said it could be an “indefinite” period of time before 3D films won’t require glasses, but believed that stereoscopic 3D could be moving to TV screens and portable devices within the next five years and added that “since we spend our lives in front of screens at work and when we come home, don’t you think if there was an improvement for screens, people would want it?”
- He did take a non-Avatar question when someone asked about “having other people take over franchises that you created.” He got a huge laugh when he cut to the chase and said, “oh Terminator?” He then said that he basically traded the rights for Terminator for a directing career and then when Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to do T3, his heart just wasn’t in it, though he had a few ideas. He said the producers “ran off with the rights, which caused some bad blood” and so when Arnold asked him after they were going in a different direction, Cameron told him, “just do me one thing – ask for more money than anyone ever has.” Arnold said, “reeeeealllly?” He said, “yes. Because what idiots would make a Terminator movie without you?” Which seemed like a direct jab at Terminator Salvation even though he was talking about T3. The audience roared accordingly.
-Somebody also asked about his reputation as a hardass on set and compared him with Michael Mann, to which Cameron jokingly replied, “What? Michael Mann’s a whacko.” (A crew member from two of his films stood up and defended him.)
- He also described his time since Titanic, mostly deep sea diving, seeing things “more amazing than anything in Hollywood since it was real.”
It ended with the moderator saying “I feel like we witnessed something historic,” which it surely did. And if you ever get to see either "Aliens" or "The Abyss" in 70MM, don't pass it up - it's fucking amazing. If you’re able to use this, call me Marsellus Wallace.

... cos I've got a sneaky feeling Avatar is going top pull a Phantom Menace on us. A couple of things here make me think Cameron is hedging his bets.

.. just so that Motononous Kawasaki guy will tear off his own cock and fuck his own eyeballs with it.
-
I'm just curious, because so far we know diddly-squat about this movie, and yet simply because one talkbacker posts the same thing over and over again until it becomes a bonafide phrase, this has now become one of the most hyped movies of the year. That one talkbacker has probably generated thousands of dollars worth of publicity for this thing.
-
to rip the shit out of the last 2 Terminator movies. You just know he thinks McG is a hack and he must hate T3 bigtime as that movie was average at best.
-
He seems to be like "Woah lets not get crazy here", and that seems a little weird. Also, Harry, you haven't seen any footage yet, have you?
-
... Maybe he's seeing the finished footage and thinking "ooooooohh shit. There's still a ways to go with this digital 3D stuff."

I mean, who knows whether it will be good or revolutionary or even hold a match to the expectations that people have for it. For me, every Cameron movie has been good to phenomenal, so I am sure it won't be bad at all...but who knows...Cameron also tried to temper expectations for Titanic as well, so I don't take him being cautious about the film to mean that he thinks it is bad at all. More like him being 'humble' about it (which is a misnomer considering his reputation)...oh, let the Cameron bashing begin...

Terminator 3.
"James Cameron recently talked with BBC1 and revealed he's very happy with how Terminator 3 ended up: 'In one word : Great. There was a small part of me that hoped it wasn't good - but another part of me hope'd it succeeded. And it did. And I'm so glad it did. Jonathon's made a great movie. Arnold's in great form. I really like what he's done with it'. -

It's wise to be lowering expectations

If it's just ok, then audiences will accept it more than if it was hyped up to be a life changing experience.

When you stare at computer screens all day 1:85 will feel natura
by pixelsmack
Yes, nearly all computer monitors or TVs are 1:85. So no wonder he thinks 3D looks better on it. You get use to seeing it on that medium.
Oh well. I still don't like 3D and will gladly enjoy the proper 2:35:1 aspect at home with my 2:35:1 aspect screen. -
as much as we did. We all know what the guy's like - and more power to him. The fucker made Aliens and T1 & 2. The Abyss. True Lies! Everyone here knows that T3 was virtually a spoof of the last one. Make no mistake, Cameron knows that too. The other thing about T3 - that film was the most expensive budget ever at the time. I couldn't for the life of me figure out where that was onscreen. Except Arnie's salary.
-
he's lulling us into a false sence of security because he thinks it's the most groundbreaking film ever?
-
Lucky fucks!!!!!
-
not while i'm watching a movie anyway
-
But I can't help it. As some bloke in some film once said, "I got a baaad feeling about this."
-
... I really hope it doesn't end like the scriptment did, what with one neural network "downloading" another one. That's just too BS.
-
I dont mind, in fact sometimes I miss wathing full screen movies, you closer look at the actors faces so on and so forth.
-
your pleas of no won't be heard in the theater right before Avatar fucks the shit out of your eyeballs.
-
...was the version of "The Abyss" shown the theatrical cut or the director's cut? "The Abyss" theatrical cut is my number 3 favorite movie of all time, and I think I am one of the few who actually DID NOT enjoy where the director's cut went in terms of theme.
-
... certainly didn't even touch my eyeballs in an intimate yet slightly inappropriate manner. It looked like a scene from King Kong with a Transformer in it. But if you have to keep faith in anyone, it's Cameron I suppose. But we said that about Lucas in '99.
-
The story isn't groundbreaking, the concept art doesn't look groundbreaking, and now Cameron says the technology and SFX aren't groundbreaking...so exactly what is supposed to be so damn amazing about the movie? I doubt he's playing things down. If you were doing shit you KNEW had never been done before, you'd be talking it up for sure. I think he's realizing the hype (which wasn't necessarily created by him) will not meet the final product.
-
While the tech was great, Titanic was a clunker.
-
or how ever you spell Chewbaca's homeworld was all i got, that and China/Thailand.
-
... clearly start making films just to research, try, and push the tech envelope... I suppose we should be prepared for the actual films to suck. And no I'm not a hater and i REALLY don't want Avatar to suck. At all.
-
run of the mill SciFi story - good, but not groundbreaking SFX - just a few jawdropping scenes. Ratner or McG can do the same. Cameron is better fishing for compliments or this fucker becomes the biggest disappointment of the year. Good thing I never expected it to be nearly as great as Watchmen, Thirst or (hopefully) The Road.
-
whatever..he can do what he pleases. hes uses the whole canvas so it really doesnt matter.
-
any news on a BluRay release for Aliens?
-
Honestly, I don't know if it will work, since I haven't been able to test it, this is based on a theory concering current technology that I have seen displayed somewhere before a live audience. Ask yourselves this question: "What would be the point of having 3D for home use, and portable devices, if that would ultimately rival 3D presentations in theaters? It would immediately hurt theaters venders." The only way the industry can best this trend toward home 3D, is to create 3D imaging in theaters, without the need for the use of 3D glasses. It would take something like SMPTE to pull-off, what I am talking about, but if it were to work, "wow". Of course, theaters would have to install extra equipment to pull it off, and films would have to be designed to accomodate this effect whle filming and in post for in theater synch purposes. Now, regular theater owners might be too lazy or cheap to do it, so IMAX might be the place to employ such a thing, but I see it as inexpensive, and as a method that will serve to keep audiences coming to theaters, as opposed to staying home for the 3D experience...instead.
-
was not a big Leonardo fan when it was released(though I've come around since The Departed and The Aviator)...I've come to watch it like It's a Wonderful Life - the initial half of the movie that 'humanized' Leo and Kate I skip over now - it's when that Titanic hits the iceberg that the movie really moves into high gear...that last hour and a half is really, really great...
-
a "few" scenes will be memorable.
I would think you'd want the whole fucking movie to be memorable. -
So no. No eyeballs will be fucked on this one. Story will be stellar though.
-
unless it's a projector-based system. Otherwise you would need to sit right in front of a huge television for it to even be worthwhile. I just want better frame-rates and resolution in 3D theatres.
-
According to reports, the 3D is supposed to be so good in regard to Avatar, that viewers feel a sense of being immersed in the visuals, or embeded.
-
Most 2.35 movies these days are shot 1.85 and then cropped at the top and bottom with black bars. For the 1.85 version of Avatar you will be seeing it without the bars. Only anamorphic films are truly 2.35, but cameron has never shot anamorphic, only 1.85 Super35 cropped to 2.35.
-
If its not a franchise I don't really care about it.
-
Everyone is so used to the McGs and the JJs whoring their movies at every opportunity and telling the fans everything they want to hear whether the end product turns out to be shit or not, they are not used to seeing a master and this humility throws them off. Cameron is going to let the movie speak for itself and wants the you floored by how awesome it turned out, he doesn't need to build a hype engine for this - hearing him be that humble has me afraid of how awesome this is going to be. It's James Fucking Cameron folks, after all the water-downed shit you've been scraping by on over the years this movie is going to you fuck your soul, your eyes will be a broken window afterthought.
-
The Wachowski brothers, where they are just complete fucking weirdos and don't do interviews.
-
Where they just make fun of everything. But man when was the last time they've shown their faces in public? Lettermen before Team America, or promoting season 10 of South Park? I wish those guys would get out more. They can't be that busy out of season, seeing that they make the show the day before it comes on.
-
Not new. Henson has done it, and so has Framestore for Dinotopia. But agree that quality will improve - especially as GPU technology improves with the likes of NVIDIA, AMD and other vendors cranking up the teraflops on cheap graphics cards.
Kudus to Cameron and his VFX team for using technology to their advantage (rather than the other way around) and not just doing it because "it's there". -
or kiss his ass.
-
Do you also prefer your directors to make two good flicks then three fucking terrible flicks? If I made Speed Racer I wouldn't do interviews too.
-
GREAT report on Jim Cameron. I really wonder what is next after AVATAR. I hope it's still BATTLE ANGEL and I hope Schwarzenegger plays the cyborg hunter Ido. Cameron and Arnie need to team up since they had so many possible projects that never got made (ie PLANET OF THE APES).
-
Was the shit I fucking love that movie. I could see where you don't like it, but I fucking loved it. So yeah I would like my directors to make two amazing movies and two could have been awesome if they were just direct to DVD sequels.
-
I would imagine he rather likes Mostow and of course he won't bash anything Arnie does so it kinda makes sense he would not bash T3. Still , most people on this site glorify this guy and those same people think T3 is utter garbage so how do they feel about Cameron knowing he thinks T3 was great?
-

Still don't know what this film is about and don't care.
by jackpumpkinhead
I lost any interest about two years ago, when I heard it's based on some Japanese comic book or game, or whatnot. But it's nice to read about jabs at McG.
-
Arnie is finished as a leading man , the dude will be in his late 60's by the time he is finished in politics if not early 70's. I assume he will run again in CALI-fornia?
-
lets see what he did for AVATAR first.

that Mech was copied from stargate universe.

well...it could be...
-
For a kid flick it was a lot of fun in my opinion. People hold against it that it didn't look like other movies enough i think. Anyways, matrix 2 and 3 sucked, so fuck the Wachovskies.
As for Avatar, guys, take it easy and just wait and see. I think Cameron is just such an interesting, intense character, whatever he does will be interesting to see. You people get off so much on the hype/anti-hype (it's gonna fuck my eyeballs/titanic sucked so will this) you really should learn to relax a little and take all this stuf for what it's worth. You know, like jesus would. Or Bruce Lee... -
was like having my eyeballs raped by a kaleidescope. But each to their own.
-
was pretty revolutionary in its own way so the question is...can AVATAR beat that?

had funny car physics. they didnt seem like cars or anything.

Why Ed Harris refuses to talk about the film?

ed harris was embarrased by that scene where he pressed his hands against her bare breasts, he got a hard-on and the whole crew saw it and laughed.

JJ does the opposite of what you just said. He's insanely secretive, which is why I love him. You know absolutely nothing about his projects. There's never a script leak, no test screenings, no trailers that give it all away. So, think before you talk shit.

THE ABYSS directors cut is a looong fucker to sit through... but... so fucking worth it for that moment when the camera swoops over the undersea alien city and the symphonic music hits crescendo. Goosebumps man.
If AVATAR has just one moment as stirring as that then it'll be essential. -

Up until recent advances in 3-D, ALL 3-D was shot in 1:85 using two film cameras, so this isn't exactly news, but electing to do so when you could do it in 'scope, using today's advanced processes, is odd.
I prefer THE ABYSS Director's Cut simply because, when you compare it to the theatrical cut, you realize that about half of the finale was clumsily chopped out of it. I liked the little extras in ALIENS' Director's Cut, but even with the Acheron stuff put back in, I'm a little more ambivalent about that one.
I believe Ed Harris got soaked on THE ABYSS because, when asked about his actors complaining what a hardass he was on the set in the L.A. Times, Cameron referred to them as "poor babies". I lived in L.A. when they were posting TITANIC, and you could always spot a Digital Domain employee by his or her's "I Survived James Cameron's TITANIC" tee shirt, replete with Cameron's "angry eyes" on the back. -
I haven't seen SPEED RACER yet, because im not sure if i'm ready to let it go all the way with my eyeballs.
I'm saving my eyeballs cherry for AVATAR.
Be gentle with me Big Jim*

1/3 of the movie going public can't see 3D.
-
Shitty movie.
-
I myself can't see in 3D (blind in my right eye), but I went with the missus to a screening of CORALINE in 3D a few months ago and, as long as you keep the polarized glasses on, the image looks fine.
-
Was said publicly years ago, long before T4.
-
SPEED RACER is a great example of having all the money, technology and even talent at your disposal to make what should have been an insanely great movie ... and STILL make boring, unwatchable crap. I had to recheck the credits on SPEED RACER to make sure it hadn't been written, produced and directed by George Lucas.
-
My vision is good, just can't see 3D. My eye doctor told me to not worry about have weak stereo-vision, it doesn't have much of an impact on the real world viewing. But it sucks to not be able to see 3D movies, and I hope 3D doesn't take over cinema because that would kill movies for me.
-
wow that was informative, i didnt know such a thing existed. i wear eyeglasses and i cant see the movie with out them so i dont know how im gonna.
-
They make prescription polarized lenses. Check with your eye doctor. Of course, that's a hell of an expensive solution, so I hope you dig 3D movies!
-
Thats the first time I've heard of those, I check into it ASAP. Thank you for the heads up!
-
won't be the next The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones orrr Revenge of the Sith. Unlike Lucas, Cameron has his finger on the pulse of his fans.
-
have to do with Avatar? Just another excuse to rail against him by some sad sodden man child
-
has nothing to do with Avatar, but somebody compared it to The Phantom Menace and I assure you it'll be better than that mess.
-
One of the top 3 movies of '08, in my opinion.
And Cameron... I have a weird feeling for him, something I don't think I've ever felt for anybody associated with Hollywood. Could it be... respect? -
"AVATAR: FUCKING YOUR EYEBALLS IN 2009" tagline anyways?
I had heard that Ed Harris almost drowned during a long swim scene. Cameron's attitude towards it "Boo Hoo!"
-
... Cameron has been gone a long, long time. Not making movies. Working on the technology. Refining it to fit his singular vision. Not at all unlike our bearded, be-chinned friend who burned us all upon his return in '99. Just remember that, back then, Darth Lucas had a 100% hit rate. Look what happened. Seriously, I'm 80% sure Cameron's gonna knock this fucker out of the park. I am. But stop treating this like the Second Coming. If we do, we're lining ourselves up for disappointment. For fuck's sake, let's learn from our mistakes.
-
But it's probably out of the comfort zone of most Western audiences. It's truly a live-action anime, and unless you're wired up to watch those things, your brain will probably just switch off a few scenes in. It's garish, the dialogue is stilted, the acting quaint- but it's deep in its own Japan-like way. The Japanese like to do things from the outside in: the aesthetics come first and then the rest follows suit. The look and atmosphere is king and the rest is subservient. I'm not even knocking that- most of my favourite shit is Japanese, so I reckon there might be something to the way they do things. It's just those 250 years they spent cut off from the rest of the world before four American ships came and forced them to come back into the fold made them see things...differently from the West.
-
Howard the Duck anyone?
-
Dammit! I was just about to amend and knock his hate rate down! Good call buddy. Howard the Duck... Some might say Willow, and the dicks would say Last Crusade. Settle at 80% and call it even?
-
Given the chance I would surf your rolls. BTW James kicks all ass even though he is Canadian. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
-
"Hit rate" I meant. Too many beers tonight, chaps!
-
Does a film have to be shot in 70mm in order for it to be shown in 70mm? Is it like how some Blu Ray players will 'upscale' regular DVDs? Where Aliens and The Abyss originally shot in 70nmm - I always thought that shooting in 70mm was prohibitively expensive for most films. Sorry if I'm sounding dumb - can someone explain it to me?
-
He has spoken about it in the past. In one of the DVD versions I have, there are a few interviews with him.
It appears that for some of the scenes where he's underwater, they had divers out of shot with bottled air, and they were supposed to swim over to Ed and give him air when he signaled for it.
Thanks to a fuck up on Jim Camerons part, the diver was further away from Ed than he ought to have been, and Ed thought he was going to die. (He came really close to drowning.)
Aside from the trauma of almost drowning, and the shock involved in it, Cameron basically treated Ed like he was a diva having a histrionic attack, instead of someone who almost died because of *his* fuckup. (He moved the safety divers further away from Ed, to get a particular shot. To hell with safety regulations.)
So Ed swore he wasn't going to work for someone who could treat his actors like that. ("I will never work for that kook again.") But as a professional, he finished the shoot.
Though she doesn't talk about it on the DVD, I've read other reports that Mary Elizabeth Masterantonio almost drowned too.
If things had turned out slightly differently, Cameron would be in the same group as John Landis, and Stephen Spielberg. Directors who ignored safety regulations, made child actors work after dark, and got 3 actors killed on the job.
And of course, no one would talk about it because it would have been settled out of court. -
were we not told about this event? where did everyone hear about it? please tell.
-
that Cameron can be a cock of the highest order. But fuck it - he gave us some blinding films. And hopefully another, come Christmas. Personally, I always got a bit freaked out how he turned his female principals into big butch macho he-she warriors, in the case of Ripley and Sarah Connor. And that bit in True Lies where mousey quiet housewife Jamie Lee Curtis is basically terrorised in a dark room by Arnie and Tom Arnold, into becoming an ass-kicking superspy - that raises all kinds of issues, if you're that way inclined to thinking. But then a Harrier jump jet flies UP A FUCKING SKYSCRAPER, so all is well.

to get a role in a movie?
-
He told Schwarzenegger to hold out for as much money as possible. We know he got paid a fuckload of the overall budget and this surely affected the movie. Cameron did this deliberately in an attempt to scupper the flick! You can't blame him. Though he ripped the original Terminator idea from someone else, who he later had to pay, so this matters not. He also had the stupidity to shoot the 'smiling' scenes and other bullshit for T2 when the T-800 should have been shooting up Mexicans and fucking Sarah.

... if memory serves, was a flashforward to a safe, non-Skynet, non-nuked world, with John Connor as a Senator. We got a sequel with John Connor as a twitchy, gnome-faced, whiney tit, totally avoiding his destiny as a leader of men - therefore rendering the stuff he lived through in T2 totally null and void. There's no WAY Cameron liked T3!!!

-
The confusion is that they both use the same filmstrip, but IMAX is shot with the filmstrip turned sideways. An IMAX image is as tall as a 70MM image is wide. This requires different cameras and different projection (IMAX needs a crane to lift the huge reels)
Some 35MM films were simply converted to 70MM, similar to how they are today for IMAX.
For the record, I saw Abyss shown in 70MM projection as a teen, and the surround sound was better than almost every movie's surround I've heard since, even though it wasn't digital. It was 100% enveloping. The huge screen wasn't bad either. 70MM THX was amazing! Saw Last Crusade the same way. Also amazing surround. I don't know why, but digital doesn't quite match that sound quality. -

It's weird; he also did an interview with Quint on AICN
by seppukudkurosawa
where he said this: "Then I saw ALIEN VS PREDATOR and it was actually pretty good. (laughs) I think of the 5 ALIEN films, I'd rate it 3rd."

there is better hotter women out there in space? lets get there now people, i need this we need this, earth women are so lame now.
-
The big space battle at the end of Jedi is crazy awesome. Aside from that I completely agree with you.
-
Isn't it obvious?
-
--- that must be wrong. The girl who played Carol-Anne died during, or perhaps just after, Poltergeist III, which was years later and Spielberg had no involvement with whatsoever. The girl who played the other sister, Dominique Dunne, was killed after filming Poltergeist by her boyfriend, shortly before she was due to start work on "V".
-
movie with dazzling action and memorable scenes. that is all i want out of a movie.
-
If this film lives up to anything near the hype already created for it. It would literally have to slip a slimy cock into your eye sockets the way folks are creaming themselves about it here. I'm hopeful it will be good. It all looks very like bits of Aliens to me and the 3D, well, I think it's just a fad - like it was in the 80s and before. It didn't take then....maybe now....who knows. I'm ok with 2D myself as long as the story is good.
-
Honestly, think about. Persona wise they are both massive asses, but Cameron plays his jerkass nature off in a much more clever manner. Add to that his overall talent behind the camera and reputation for being a stickler, and you can't hate.
-
Fuck real sets. Embrace digital and green screen. What the fuck happened to just making a good movie, with real sets, real actors? Stop making these lifeless synthetic films!

it was shoddy novelty garbage - jaws 3 and F13 Part 3 , and fucking axes and teeth and flying heads poking you in the eye. This new stereoscopic 3D shouldn't be compared to that carnival shit, especially when its tied to a quality product like Avatar.Cameron's modesty is touching, especially after douches like McG telling all and sundry how great they are and halking the shit out of their mediocre wares. Cameron knows what he's got going here is fucking good - he'll let the end product do the talking.BTW, he hates T3 and AvP - read between the lines.
-
Avatar uses 60 % real sets, props, and human actors - just so you know.

Jc on AVP: "I actually liked it. I actually liked it a lot."
by seppukudkurosawa

I get that this guy's an event movie God, but honestly, there's nothing to read between the lines. He did like those movies. Stop using him as your mouthpiece. -
http://tinyurl.com/bsdswz
However, Yahoo reported that Cameron didn't like how T3 turned out.
Oh, and T4 is now officially a flop. It only grossed $5 million on Friday. It will be lucky to gross $130 million domestically. Now, Fuck off McG. -
Awhile back. He talks in the Making of doc on the Abyss DVD. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, though, has not talked about it. One look at the raw footage in that doc will explain why.
-
The difference is Cameron is a great filmmaker who's made great movies, even revolutionary ones. Just like Michael Mann, Alfred Hitchcock, and David Lean. All asses, all inarguably great filmmakers. Bay's an ass because he's a spoiled child, not because he's some great, inspired auteur with a vision. I know people who've worked with Mann, Cameron and Bay, and with the first two, the asshole attitude is all about making a better film; with Bay, it's just being an ass its own sake.

Arnold can't run for governor again because of term limits. 2010 is his last year.

by terry1978
Just out of sheer curiosity.
-
There is a video of Cameron at the Pirates 2 premiere well after that interview took place, and where he says he's tempted to make alien 5 because 'Fox has really screwed up the whole franchise'. you tube it. If that isn't a veiled dig at Avp, I don't what is. Someone like Cameron has to be tactful because he actually works in the industry, and he's too much of a pro to openly rag on someone else's work regardless of what he privately thinks of it.
-
I loved the cartoon, but the movie was trash!!!!!
-
That's a common technique used when you know your product is going to be received like shit. Play it down, then when it's released and it shows how long he's been away from being behind the camera, it's mediocrity won't look as bad. And responding to some comments posted earlier, I think it will make George Lucas look more impressive when you realize that he laid the cornerstone for Avatar beginning in the very late 90's, when he began shooting TPM.
-
I compared the makers of SPEED RACER, a.k.a, the Wachowski Bros., to George Lucas, not James Cameron. In my humble opinion, SPEED RACER was both technically brilliant and creatively a dud. The whole movie felt like they were so hell-bent on making a live-action anime that they forgot that most anime has something approximating a story and pacing. In fact, I was stoned when I saw it and was STILL somehow completely bored me out of my mind. If you liked it, great, but as far as I'm concerned, it was still-born. As for anyone who has the audacity to defend Lucas, let me assure you, you're defending someone who got insanely lucky (or had the right friends and co-workers) one time and has spent the rest of his career cashing that particular paycheck. Lucas didn't define (or rape) my childhood, STAR WARS did. Hell, HE doesn't even know how he pulled it off.
Before the advent of CGI (and more to the point, better compositing technology), special effects plates were often shot in 70mm and the resulting composite transferred to 35mm -- reducing grain from multiple film passes the plates had to make during the composition process. For a great visual example of this, watch STAR TREK: TMP, then watch STAR TREK II. You'll notice some hideous grain in TMP's effect shots, where the composites were made in 35mm, while the new effects shots (some were actually recycled from the first flick) in STAR TREK II, which were done in 70mm and bumped down to 35mm, look clean and smooth by comparison.
Cameron's a jag-off -- that's what makes him a great director. He's not out there kissing people's asses, he's making great movies. So long as he continues cranking out the TERMINATORs and ALIENSs of the world, while guys like McG and Brett Ratner act like the film biz is one big schmoozefest, he can show up to the set dressed in a goddamn Nazi uniform and dab at the blood of human babies dripping down his chin with a hanky made out of puppy skin, as far as I'm concerned. -
Loads of hype, then Avatar will turn out lackluster at best.

1. Avatar is crap (or at best just average), Cameron knows it, and is tempering artificially inflated expectations, or
2. Avatar is really really awesome and there's nothing Cameron can show us without making our brains melt and leak out our earholes.
Either way, we need to get this over with. -
his movies. It's summer. Where's a trailer?
-
for a real geek-out scifi movie. That's why the hype for Avatar: a movie that borrows plenty from existing scifi tropes I'm sure, but an adaptation of nothing but itself. All we've had lately is superheroes. Superhero as Adventure Flick, superhero as Angsty Rom-Com, superhero as Crime Thriller, superhero Deconstructed. That's weak wine for those of us looking back to the franchise launchers of the 80s, which we're forced to do because we're relentlessly reminded of them by shitty sequels. Dear God, T:S was a void of a movie, a shadow on a wall left by the earlier movies that justified its existence. It felt more like the unholy hybrid of the soulless Matrix and Transformers franchises than something spawned by James Cameron's brain.
Cameron at the very least understands story structure and how to develop a character in film, things George Lucas also understood despite his disinterest in living actors. McG and the rest of these pretenders to the throne understand nothing, create nothing, string together action sequences like beads on a rosary as if mouthing Latin phrases they don't understand. And they don't care to understand, they're in too much of a hurry. So they'll keep wasting hundreds of millions on action sequences that would be terribly exciting if only you could bring yourself to care how they turned out. So far, aside from the casting glimmers of Star Trek there's been little enough this summer to feel excited about and little on the forthcoming menu to salivate over. Avatar retains enough mystery to arouse interest, so if we've got nothing else to hope for at least we can hope for that. -

Like Harry on the phone asking Cameron what he should write, and Cameron telling him what to write, but write it like someone is emailing you from the event.. The Stallone shit is cool, feels real, this shit with Cameron just feels totally fucking staged.. Just some PR bullshit Cameron is pulling to grease the geeks, using "Headgeek." Fuck Cameron, I'm sick of this holy-er-than-thou bullshit. This fucking site has a credibility problem....
-
Very claustrophobic and cerebral flick. Stick with the theatrical cut though--the director's cut is shit.
-
Jamie Lee's striptease scene. Still got it, all these years later.
-
unbelievable
-
I would love to ask cameron why the FUCK he never released decent dvds of those films. Instead we got fucked cover which lied and said they were 16x9. I will never buy the abyss again.
-
Just kidding. The director's cut rocks.
-
I assure you. Cameron had a 70mm even in Los Angeles of ALIENS and ABYSS... and this was just some site reader like you, but lucky enough to be there and nice enough to send it in for all us folks to hear.
I'm looking forward to the 'debut' at Comic Con of whatever they have planned there. As that's where I've heard the first footage is now set to be screened, though I don't have that from Cameron. -
How do they cope with SOPRANOS, for example? Each ep would be all of 5 minutes long!
-
It was the theatrical version, despite the Aero website claiming a runtime of 172 minutes (which would be the director's cut). I was pretty pissed, since the theatrical version is damn near pointless once you've seen the director's cut. Looked great though. Aliens was the theatrical too, but I can go either way with that one. Anyway, a shame that Abyss still isn't out in anamorphic DVD...
-
..and they just run through groups of peaceful alien species and fucking chop them to pieces. that would be cool.
-
Why so much hate? The first 5 minutes were corny as hell but the rest was okay.
-
"A crew member from two of his films stood up and defended him." WHo? Cameron or Mann? what does this even mean? Stood up at the event? Was on the panel?
-
Wait, I'm confused here. Are you saying that Doug Trumbull (who always shot VistaVision from what I understand) shot effects for "ST 2:TWoK" in 35mm? That doesn't sound right.
-
Is that even if it isn't the second coming of Chewbacca, at least he has tried to make something new. He didn't go back to the well that has been tainted with run off since the last time he was there and make another rapping of ones childhood event film, ala Lucas/Spielberg/Favreau. So that way if its not as good as Twilight was too all of you, at least he didn't ruin your Harry Potter, Transformers, Bratz, Battle For Terra (oops maybe he does that one?), Night at The Museum, Howard the Duck or whatever it is that you hold sacred enough to scream rape over whenever anyone puts a hand on it once it is release to butt fuck our eyes out.
-
Overseers pulling an all nighter or something? Why are they up this late? Usually drinking 5 gallons of pop a day puts people to sleep by 9? Did McG start dealing cocaine to everyone to get on their good side again?
-
Lucas/Spielberg/Favreau!? sure you haven't been drinking too much pop and are now bouncing off the walls?
-
I'm pretty sure 5 gallons would keep you up until 9...the next day!
-
already happened. it was rubbish. He was best friends with yoda.
-
who has suggested he is raping anything but eyeballs and all that shit. What a random outburst that was, you confusing lil fella x
-
i trust Cameron these days about as far as i could throw him, find him, eat him and shit him. rather take a tape measure to the cinema with you kids and work out the dimensions yourself.
-
of avatar 'fucking your eyeballs' come from anyway? it couldnt have been cameron or anyone involved in the actual production coz a lot of what cameron said in the article sounded like backtracking to me - his 'unusually humble' attitude sounds more like 'yeah i just realised the film is pretty average really, the only extraordinary thing about it is the ridiculously costly gimmicky way we made it. oops'
-
the eyball fucking may just turn into eyeballs crying. I'm catching a whiff of the phantom menace.
-
Thanks for the link, nice to hear an intelligent filmmaker talk for a change, instead of morons like McG and Abrams.

-
it's guaranteed to be a PG-13 film, with Fox hoping for some good marketing, whether it be toys for kids or a TV spin-off. this is why it is being made. as for the "eyeball fucking", it started by people who forget that James Cameron has made 3 good films - T1, T2 and Aliens. none of which, interestingly, were originals. why the fuck anyone is just slightly above interested in the latest from Cameron is beyond me. i mean, i had HOPED that he would one day return and make a decent film again. this will not be it.
-
is Cameron's choice of tennis ball.
-
The Under Pressure doc on The Abyss was shot in 1993, not 16 years after the fact. Harris and Cameron are friendly nowadays. I'd love to see a 20th anniversary Abyss DVD with a commentary from the pair of them.
-
IHaveSeenEveryEpisodeOfPrisonBreak thinks Avatar will be shit. Yet he has sat through every episode of Prison Break. Sheds some light on his mental condition, don't ya think?
-
to the Cameron Q&A? Great stuff.
-
Damn man, you've got the 'hater–aide' flowing for Abrams. It is a good interview with Cameron though. He simply tells it how he sees it, without pretentious boasting and self–effacing humour. Although, to be fair, I don't see Abrams boasting or being obnoxious.
-
"Okay James, because I owe you one I will ask the producers of Terminator 3 to pay me more money than anyone has ever received for a Hollywood film role. Just as a favour to you."
-
Are you talking about the doc "Under Pressure" about 'The Abyss'? Yeah, that was completed by Van Ling for the Laserdisc release of 'The Abyss'. I think the theatrical release was 1993, so it came out a few months later.
-
going? I listened to the Q and A on marketsaw yesterday, as you guys say really interesting and informative. The same as his commentires like you say Asimov...
-
As Cameron says on the DVD for 2001, the best special effect of all is a script loaded with mind-blowing ideas. Isn't THAT why we loved his two Terminator films, and Aliens? (Though I'm not saying they come anywhere close to 2001, neither I'm sure, would Cameron.) You know why I'm interested to see Avatar. Becuase of the Top Notch producing job Cameron did on Sodenberg's wonderful film of Solaris.
-
to have to wait for the end of this year for most of the good movies (avatar, where the wild things are, sherlock holmes...etc) Other than Mann's PE, the Summer has nt been too great so far. Hope UP is good (sure it will be, its Pixar for fucks sake). Though I enjoyed Star Trek (dont hate me Asimov..lol)
-
Strange Days, he also wrote and produced that. A very underrated little cyberpunk movie imho...Have you ever read the old avatar scriptment dude?
-
I would much prefer to stay at home than go tio the theater, so fucking 3D at home songs great. Seeing Avatar through a fucking fog of bong smoke whilst devoring beer/nachos/space cake sounds awesome!!!
I think Avatar while only occularly abuse your neural net pathways if you are heavily fucked up for it.
While 3D is cool, I assume that in the trashed state I need to be in for this, to see and experience it the way intended, it would be hard to get over to the theater.
Gone are the days where I'm willing to smoke a joint in the parking lot. Or trying to sneak liquor in the theater.
I just wanna relax at home. Now if it's some normal movie no problem for me going out. -
of things we have really never seen done in live action. Really one of the main reasons this film interests me...
-
Avatar in 2D first. Want to see if it works/is good all on its own before I see it in 3D (though i have never seen a movie in 3D, or IMAX for that matter, so I really cant have much of an opinion on the subject..)
-
Only way to goeZ!!!!!!!!!!!
-
In 1.85, but realized that 4.20 was a superior ratio... just ask Harry
-
From what I've seen there are three types of people. First type is irrelevant as they are not concerned with creating anything. Second type is the wanna-be, who has no ideas, no real skills, and spends most of their effort on imitating or trying to repeat what other people have done. Third type is like Cameron, truly creative, spends most of their effort figuring out puzzles which they have created for themselves.
Which are you? -
How goes it? Ordered your Avatar Pandora Field Guide yet? :)
-
Yeah the doc was made in 1993 for the laserdisc release. About time Fox gave us a loaded 20th anniversary DVD this year with anamorphic and commentary.

That guy knows his Cameron too.

Directeed by Duece Bigelow
Produced by James "Golden mangodboy" Cameron
Synopsis:
It's 2009, and Ralph Fines has had many baby's through hot Jungle lovin with his girlfriend (they hook up at the end of Strange Days 1) but he feels that his life as a leather pants wearing digital pimp may be coming to a close. So, he decides to write a screenplay about a mentally retarded Army Officer who can control "through his mind like abilities" a TARDATAR.
A Tardatar is a genetically engineered retard (I know, not p.c.) that can be controled by people on earth, and will let them explore strange Alien Worlds and vistas via this Tardatar.
Ralph Fines than decides to make the movie using his headsets, so people experience it in true 5D, with surround sound.
But, in a twist of events, rapper MC Hammer is set up by the cops to take the fall for the Mortgage Crisis, and must be saved before the world goes to hell. Save the hammer, save the world....... -
Yeah—now I'm fascinated about the 1.78:1 aspect ratio. He says it gives more vertical space and that I guess, enhances the immersive experience. It's hard to be patient when you want to see what he's talking about. The other techniques for filmmaking seem to be refinements of HD dailies. It's an interesting approach.
-
Hey there, sexy AVATAR. You are looking so fine.
-
AVATAR will sure fucking try!
-
I hope I'm wrong but the overhype is just a bit too much. And 3D has always blown and I don't see how they're going to fix it.
-
Strangest Days: Rise of Vengeance
Directed by McG
Produced by McG
Score by McG
CG by McG
A MCG film
After Optimus Prime defeats the the evil Alien race Klacchkutuu, McHammer must pilot a TARDATAR into the Abyss.
The Abyss was created after a detonation of a nuke in the FLorida Keys in '94, but wasnt discovered until just now.
Using the technology originally invented for the headsets, Ralph controols a mini sub into the Abyss. Along side Hammer. But they discover something that will blow them away. The Titanic. -
Huh?
-
What hasn't he rapped? He fucked up the Jumanji series, and made a terrible Ironman movie. Lets see how the original Jumanji director Joe does with a comic book film.
-
I'm muc more into the 2D version too, especially now it will be the only scope presentation of the film. The 3D version should be fascinating too though.

So, get over it. -
Angels and Demons has done fine. The majority of its' money will come worldwide. It has grossed over $100 million domestically and more than double that in foreign markets. It will end up making more than $500 worldwide. That is a success.
On the other hand, T4 will struggle to make $130 million in North America. It could end up making $400 million worldwide. For a $200 million dollar tent pole that probably cost double that with marketing and distribution, T4 will be a flop. McG can officially fuck off. -
And Speed Racer permanently ran all over them! And once Cameron releases Avatar and blows our minds and rapes our eyeballs and all the crazy filmmaking technology is passed around, the Wachowskis will use it to fuck recepticles in your corneas that you never knew you had!!! Speed Racer 2 will be in 4D bitches with the 3D and the moving seats and possibly the entire theatre in one of those NASA things where they put the astronaut-in-training into and then spin him around and around to simulate the G-Forces we should expect when the Wachowskis launch us right out there into the stratosphere!!!

Douglas Trumbull didn't do the effects for STAR TREK II. ILM did. In fact, he didn't do all that many effects for THE MOTION PICTURE, he was basically hired at the last minute to replace the bunch of idiots who were hired to do the visuals in the first place (and because John Dykstra was once again too slow in turning in his effects shots). They recycled a couple of effects shots from TMP in STAR TREK II, even modified a few models from the first one to use in the second, but it was ILM, not Trumbull, who did the actual visual effects for II.
-
Sorry about misspelling your name ... "blakindigo".

And that's just the actual sex act itself. First you have to arouse the eye with fingers and tongue, until it is slick with it's own lubrication. -

-
...leaving the nerve intact so that the person can watch you forcibly penetrate their cornea is your kind of thing, in which case, you need psychiatric help, you fucking nutjob.

...I'd advocate practicing on something larger and less complex than a human eye at first. Babies have this wonderful soft spot on the backs of their skulls that is remarkably similar in shape and feel to an eyeball that has had its pupil cored out for the fucking.

...between the two being size, of course, and the fact that the baby's head will most likely be thrashing about a bit at first. Don't let this deter you. A few firm thrusts and the thrashing should stop.

was seeing how built Arnie was in the movie, and then seeing him in person about a month after T3 came out, at Squaw Valley all flabby with manboobs.

All you non-Americans, put away your shithead to english diction

Cameron couldn't even fuck a woman let alone my eyeballs
-
There were many Eagle Spaceships. When the middle section as exchanged for another they became:Transporter EagleRescue EagleFreighter EagleLab Pod Eaglee.t.c.Also, in your post to AlfieBoy, complaints would be the right word in that context. Wanting him to use your real nick, then calling him a RSR isn't the best way to rectify the situation. Just sayin'
-
applied to our space vehicles today. Modular, multi-purpose. That's one thing that Space 1999 always had a good feel for. The usefulness of the equipment. Sure, there were the "far out there" designs, but there was a workability to many of the props in that series.
-
I really don't care if you revolutionize something. Just tell me a good story.
-
REALLY, REALLY revolutionize something. In that case, fuck the story, stories are a dime a dozen.
-
..."EYEBALL REAMING", to each his own!
-
..thus the glut of re-makes, re-imaginings, re-boots, prequels, etc.One could only hope that stories were a dime a dozen.
-
this crap? Are you that fucking insecure about your nationalism? Geez dude, get a fucking life..ok? If it helps you sleep at night thinking im anti-American then please have at it. Though its amazing that you post my response to you about America not having an asshole shortage, but you neglet to point out that that was in response to you calling me a janitor first. And by the way Alfie? How many languages do you speak? You sure are arrogant towards non-native English speakers on these talkbacks....
-
to keep harping on about my supposed anti-americanism, while you are so blatantly anti-african. Are you really that oblivious to the hyprocisy in your posts?...
-
and grow the fuck up. And just get over yourself, do you really think you can lecture me about racism? As if it has not and does not exist in your country. So where is this mythical land where you live? And you dont even know what the fuck you are talking about anyway....Just stay there in 1983 dude where you are obviously stuck and no great movies have come out since the OT, that way you can continue to delude yourself thats its the one and only great thing that ever existed...
-
learning Italian as we type away here. Why? Because I want to immerse myself more deeply into my favorite form of cinema, Italian NeoRealism.
-
I must have the ability to understand ASSHOLE, since I can read your posts.
-
I know ILM did the effects for Trek II, I was just wondering if Trumbull's shots were grainy. Thanks for clearing that up.By the way is it me, or does it seem like most innovative visionaries go over budget, especially in SPFX work?
-
Mon, did you escape from the home again? I know its you Mom, if I told you once....nobody says Oh My God anymore, its OMG! The home called and said if you're not back soon, no pudding for a week!
-
Geezus.
-
putting way too much time and effort into this. Just answer for me why its ok for you to insult other people's cultures/nationalities, but if anyone says anything even resembling what you see as anti-americanism, you fly off the handle and rant and rave?
-
..TO LICK THE SHIT OFF OF TRUMBULL'S BOOTS YOU FUCKING MONGS.
-
pointed it was underoo that began the whole "racist thing". You then proceeded to insult me by making a factually incorrect statement about farm invasions, thereby implying that you could nt tell the difference between SA and Zim. And at least I had the balls toapologize for saying anything offensive to anyone. Whats your excuse?
-
Leave these guys alone1!
-
...snob that was ripping into another Avatar related TB'er and had to drop the America Hater bullshit on him, so I wanted to make him see the light that his revered homeland was not Eden. At this point it's just fun to continue to rile up the asshole.
-
AVATAR is looking to be rather banal, unfortunately. Cameron on the one hand says "wtf, these WETA shots are fucking LMAO guys" and then turns around and bashes T3 (which he once supported) and then says the CGI will fucking be average and there may be a few good shots in the film, and then goes on to talk about new technology he developed BLAH fucking whatever?????
Haha
Avatar could fuck a wet sponge in a ShamWow factory.... -
just making yourself look like a self righteous a-hole that has been sooo insulted and wounded by my comments. And now you must pursue some kind of jihad against me.
-
fuck a wet sponge in a Shamwow factory I meant
-
people dying og aids, and children becoming orphaned....yeah what pretentious snob behaviour right?
-
We started drinking without you. My bad. That Trumbull is a visionary, isn't he?
-
dude, i think you have read way too much into some of my comments. Obviously SA isnt Eden, one of the reasons I live in Korea.
-
to SPFX guys and Space 1999, and your foul stench came across the digital ether once again. You, MB5K, and Ass-imovLives need to go and get a room as the butt-buddies you are. BTW, shouldn't you be watching the DMZ on our behalf?
-
far too much time and thought into this...
-
Well, here in America, we think AIDS is funny because pop culture has chosen to ignore the massive global implications and instead turn it into a sick joke (see many american shows).
What's funny, is as I type this, there is some commercial about the Lost cast raising money for AIDS kids through Soccer or something.
LOL -
I mean't
-
If so I'm fucking shit faced right now, slow work day here at the office..............
-
some decent things to say about flicks. I just wanna' pound on folks who keep bringing up the ugly-American stereotype. You may think it's arrogant, but a good chunk of the planet owes the USA a pat on the back, not a kick in the ass.

...SIMPLY DON'T UNDERSTAND GREATNESS.
GREATNESS IS NOT ANOTHER FUCKING ROBOT AND ROBOT SUIT MOVIE IN A JUNGLE THAT'S GOING TO RIP OFF THAT FUCKING HORRIBLE 'DANCES WITH MONGS' MOVIE WITH COSTNER FFS.
CHRIST AM I THE ONLY ONE HERE THAT UNDERSTANDS WHAT REAL SCIENCE FICTION IS AND THAT AVATURD ISN'T GOING TO BE IT? -
I'm going to post up a fake myspace page I made today.
What's funny is that my friends and I have always had this long running joke.
I look kinda like Jake Fucking Gylenhall (spelling...??), my firned looks like Ben Affleck, and my other dude I know looks like Tom Hanks.
We all of course barely resemble these guys, but it's funny.
We had this funny idea for a Spinal Tap type of documentary called ARMORED MULLET. It's about a band with the same handle that is made up of our alter egos.
It's a slow day here so I designed the album cover and created a myspace for Armored Mullet.
Armored Mullet is ;
Tom Hanks - Vocals
Jake - Drums
Ben - Bass
Some dude from Queen who actually can play Music - Guitar

...TO WITHIN AN INCH OF HER LIFE, HE WOULD OFTEN REMARK "ONE DAY JAMES CAMERON IS GOING TO MAKE A DANCES WITH WOLVES TYPE MOVIE ONLY IN SPACE WITH ROBOT SUITS. BECAUSE JAMES CAMERON LOVES THAT DANCES WITH WOLVES MOVIE AND JAMES CAMERON IS NEVER WRONG."
*SMACK!* -
LOL!
-
America has given the world a lot of good things. You guys gave us Stan Lee, Spielberg, hamburgers, Cameron (yeah i know he is originally from Canada, but his career was due to America), to name just a few. Oh..and thank you so much for Megan Fox!
-
of my comments precisely because I realized they could be offensive to Americans on the talkback, especially SIXDEMONBAG, and ROUGELEADER66. However if someone (like dioxholster) is going to always attack me for apparantly no other reason than that im South Africa, the i have a right to in sult him and nhis natioanality too (even though its the laziest way to attack someone)...

Let's see a show of hands.

such a massive social problem in some parts of the world. But thanks for the info dude...
-
After Journey to the steaming-bowl of dick located approximately in the center of the earf, 3D is a gimmicky fuking POS.
True 3D would be some kind of Strange Days set up.
Thats my not-so-humble opinion. -
2D or 3D?
-
I guess I am in the minority, but I will see it in 3D first.
-
Do you really want me to drink?
-
Holy cow,...I had nearly (cue exaggeration) dropped into a depression, for being convinced of not having the eyes for 3D and James Cameron's AVATAR. But in having a tiny bit of hope, I took the family to see Pixar's "UP" in 3D...and was committed to staying for the entire run, even if it meant watching a blurry movie (for me). I had expected to see something like what you might see without the glasses, even with the glasses on. I have a powerfully dominant eye which affects my depth perception. Even so, I was flinching and nearly dodging some 3D effects!
Thank the maker, I'M GONNA SEE AVATAR IN 3D!!! HOLY $#!T I FEEL LIKE THROWING A PARTY!!! -
Great listen as usual with Cameron. The guy really knows his shit. Sounds like some footage is gonna be shown pretty soon which is cool. Even though it sounds like hes trying to temper expectations, I still think with his track record (Titanic was good and you know it) were gonna have something great. Either way it'll be interesting. Now I just with these fucking talkbacks werent populated with assholes getting all heated over stupid shit people say, and maybe people could actually discuss the topic at hand. Is it really that hard?
-
ten. Whatever someone may think of him, there is no question he's a smart guy.
-
soon.
-
He's not adding the 3D to the film as an afterthought or as a gimmick. It is central to how he is shooting it. Beowulf 2D does not compare to 3D and Avatar will probably be similar, although live action is different than all CG of course.
-
see it in 3D, but as i have said I have never seen a movie in 3D, si I simply want to see Avatar in 2D first, so that I canjudge it purely as a movie on its own terms. Otherwise im worried my reaction to it will different because of it being my first time experiance of a 3D movie. But if Avatar is as awsome as I hope it to be, then I will go check it out in 3D afterwards.....
-
I respect that. I agree with other TBers that 3D is a gimmick. However, I do think it has come a long way. I thought Coraline was tremendous in 3D and I figure Cameron will really push the limits of 3D so as to reduce the gimmickry inherent in the format.
-
gimmick, but I guess it depends on the movie its being used for right? Movies like Coraline or Avatar which are about someone going to a different world/reality I can see how 3D could enhace the actual experiance and what the movie is trying to do...But I dont think 3d will be used all the time, hopefully just where it adds something to the story/experiance...
-
I hope that Avatar is the beginning a prolific new chapter in Cameron's career. I would hate to see him disappear from filmmaking if Avatar is either a flop or blockbuster. I would like to see at least 4 new Cameron films by the end of 2020.
-
I can't believe how many people here have no seen films with the newer 3D technology. And btw, if you save your glasses, you only have to pay the extra price for 3D one time. Later, just buy a ticket to some other 2D movie in the same multiplex and reuse your glasses for the 3D one.
-
admit to being a loser as I have not seen a 3D movie lol.
-
like to see more movies from him. Hopefully he goes straight into BAA after he finishes post prod on Avavtar. And if Avatar is sucessful would be very interesting to see him make a trilogy out of it as he has said he would do if successful. Would nt mind seeing him take on a WWII movie....
-
Cameron also has his film about the married divers called "The Dive". He could probably film that quickly. If Arnold gets back into acting, I would love True Lies 2.
All I know is that I better get at least a good 15 films from Cameron before he is done. -
see the new innovations. I need to see how he cuts an action sequence for the stereoscopic space. How will he work to provide with the immersive experience for the audience. What challenges and pitfalls are inherent in the format and will he sidestep them or sink?
-
unfortunatly he aint a young dude any more, so I hope he gets way more prolific....
-
Do you know when Avatar comes out in South Korea? I was just looking at the release dates and saw that France actually gets to see it two days before the US.
-
Like their tanks, their movies are of very inferior tech.....so Cameron was like wtf here's the film early I feel bad................ROFL
-
tanks have an extra gear? R for retreat. Just kidding, no offence meant to any french people here.
-
know. I have heard nothing about it here. But there are a lot of 3D theatres. The Koreans do love their movies and they useally stay on top of all the latest tech...
-
He makes terrible accusations without offering any proof other than claiming "eyewitness statements" which are never backed up. You guys will believe anything.
-
SHERMAN will set the WAYBACK MACHINE and .....Oh, Dick Peabody, never mind!!!
-
and what is this article that is a joke...if I may ask?
-
Do you know who Mr. Peabody is?
-
http://tinyurl.com/nduofb Somebody above posted it... because for some reason or another The Twilight Zone tragedy got brought up at some point.
-
Absolutely terrible. When Arnie is walking around with the coffin painfully heldu by wires, sheesh. And the action looks like it was shot by the 2nd unit team responsible for The A Team and The Fall Guy. Woeful film. And LaserPants thinks its better than T2. Crazee.
-
know that crazy is pretty much laser's stock in trade, right?
-
There is no actual explanation!
-
at this point im personally having a hard time deceiding which was worse T3 or TS....all I know it either way we just lost...
-
I think it's pretty smart from Cameron to downplay the hype: he knows, that the result will be ripped a part no matter what.
-
Cameron is smart enough to have taken notes from what happened to the prequal trilogy and the matrix sequals imho....
-
Terminator Salvation doesn't open here in the UK until June 3rd. Not planning on seeing it though. All the footage i've seen so far looks terrible.
-

yeah hyping the shit out of it will only lead to disappointment
by six demon bag
watchmen not included (of course)
-
money my friend. Just avoid unless you want to be very dissapointed. After you see it, you will just get more and more annoyed/angry the more you think about it...
-
now see why Cameron chose Sam Worthington. This guy really impressed me, he is really the best thing in the movie even though he is saddled with some really bad dialouge. He does struggle with his American accent a bit, but hey so did Connery...Otherwise I found him to be very action friendly, you really buy himin the action scenes, and he comes across as such a regular guy. Has a very bullshit free persona. Also suprised me how much warmth and humanity he brought to the role. In short consider me sold....
-
wedding? Did you have a rough nite? lol...
-
wedding? Did you have a rough nite? lol...
-
God, amazing line by Cameron. Arnold had more emotion playing a robot than Bale did the entire movie. God, was that movie so god damn medicore.
-
a good way to sum it up..mediocre...
-
who ever was in charge should be fired. 90 million? it'll be lucky to crack 120 million domestically. A massive bomb by any measure...
-
Do we really need another another Terminator?
-
Does that mean he doesn't have a lot of faith in Avatar living up to the hype? Because that would bum me out.
-
whats up yeah it was a good wedding...much is a blur..the wife and i pretty much spent the day recovering yesterday

I don't think Cameron hyped Titanic prior to release either
by labattsbleu
so, the concern people have isn't consistent with past actions, where Cameron didn't hype work previously as far as i can recall...and all that work turned out well. That's not to say Avatar is going to be a watershed moment in film, but I don't think you can leap to any conclusions based on what he has said (or not said) to this point in time.
-
So odds are I'll thoroughly enjoy it. I reckon that all of you psychotic Cameron fanbots who think its going to be the Second Coming of Kubrick (aka The One True God Of Film) are going to be very disappointed.Or, hell, maybe I'm wrong. Nothing would make me happier than coming here to apologize for all I've said about James "Overrated" "Cameron over the past few months. I really hope its good. Hell, I really hope its GREAT. Sadly, I think it will be, at best, OK.
-
titanic was in hype overdrive because it was WAY over budget and delayed from summer to winter...the media wrongly attacked it as a failure. Cameron even gave back his director's salary. After opening day, media shut the fuck up quickly.
-
you better be on your best behavior.
-
It's the biggest fucking wasted opportunity I've seen in my life. They had 200 million dollars to make a movie about the future war, and they don't show ANY of the fucking future war!!! There's isn't a single battle with more than like 1 terminator on 1 person, so lame. Not to mention it completley disregards the future talked about in the original movies. People keep saying "well this movie takes place before the future from the original movies", but the problem is, why didn't they make this about that future?
There is no reason to tell the story in T:Salvation, its utterly perfunctory, doesn't add anything or develop anything. Seriously, Harry was correct, all that happens is John Conner gets his scar, big fucking whoop. And judging by the box-office, these guys fucked up their chance, now we'll never get to see that future movie we always wanted. -
All our differences aside, I will gladly offer my most humble and sincere apologies if, come December, AVATAR kicks my brain with awesome.
Oh, and, btw, DRAG ME TO HELL is the best movie of the summer. -
It didn't have enough Steadicam shots.
-
schools out for me and im bored
-
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but definitely could have been better. There were many things I did like about it, but some things i did not like. I won't go into great detail but I will just say that I don't think it was terrible, but it also could have been better.
-
yeah i mentioned that earlier...one of my biggest problems is that it is not consistent with Cameron's TRUE version. nuclear war would blot out the sun..or so im told. it was fought in ruins...not in tempe arizona. it was like they tried to give it a global scope, an epic feel, but came up way short. <P.then i started thinking that there would be some factions out there apathetic or fighting for their own cause. i think culture and religious wars would commence..my mind drifted halfway through the film...around the gas station scene.
-
I like the fact Jim didn't seem to hype his film too much. He answered questions, made a couple of jokes, but didn't pimp his film too much. I like this handling of it.
Also, "Aliens" in 70MM? Holy sheeeyit, I'd love to see that! -
Too much "too much." Sorry. Should've edited a bit. Replace the second "too much" with "to high heaven."
Thank you. -
The fact that the Terminator is programmed to be a father figure is not "irony," it's a plot contrivance and marketing ploy.
BUT, there is irony in T2, and I find it TOTALLY FUCKING HILARIOUS that you totally missed it (probably has something to do with not knowing what irony means). The one irony that I see in T2, and its a tragic one, is tied in with a time paradox, and is directly related to T1. Essentially: that it was the Terminator's arrival, destruction, and detritus retrieval which lead to the creation of the Terminator in the first place. THIS is IRONY (tinged with paradox). The same thing is present in classic myths like the story of Oedipus in which, Oedipus, terrified that his dark prophecy will come true -- he will kill his father and marry his mother -- goes to insane lengths to avoid his destiny... only to find that it was his very efforts to avoid his destiny that causes it to happen! Again, THIS IS IRONY. Robot = Daddy is NOT irony. It's a plot contrivance.
You're welcome. Class dismissed. -
reasonable too. Thanks for proving me wrong that you actually can engage in a conversation without just shouting crap in caps.....Now you know I totally disagree with you dude about your assesment of T2, but you are most welcome to your opinion....For me after the mass dissapointment of Indy4 and the prequal trilogy, Cameron is the last old great sci-fi action director that has a shot at delivering imho...
-
how are things? Yeah what more can we say about TS? It had a few good things, but overall it was just a complete wasted oppertunity. The future war they showed was a joke, and as you say completely inconsistent with what we were both told and shown in the first 2 movies...
-
i will say it agin for the idiots in the cheap seats: simple defintion---The simplest definition of irony is "the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: Situational irony is the disparity of intention and result: when the result of an action is contrary to the desired or expected effect. Likewise, cosmic irony is disparity between human desires and the harsh realities of the outside world (or the whims of the gods). a terminator, created to destroy mankind, is reprogrammed to protect the savior of mankind.By seeing the "humanity" in the terminator (a killing machine), Sarah regains hers. in no way in T2 does Arnold "become" a daddy to John. he doesnt take him to softball practice. he doesnt get ice cream with him. you're mad at you father, Jim Cameron forgives you.
-
How is this irony? How is this an unexpected outcome? Robot was programmed to be a Good Guy Daddy Bot. This is NOT irony. Its a gimmick, its a plot contrivance, and for some people that worked, but its not irony. Sorry! Its not. By that token, Data from Star Trek being programmed to feel emotions = irony. Its so unexpected! Robots don't feel! I mean, c'mon. No offense dude, but its not ironic. Again, see my post above for elements of T2 that actually are ironic. Thanks.
-
ever convince the other. So lets just all agree to disagree. This constant fighting and insulting (which obviously im just as guilty of is really getting tiresome now) Though I am right there with your assessment of T2 SDB. As always my friend you are fkn professional in your opinions...
-
its ironic that John and Sarah followed him. they, especially Sarah, have no reason to trust the terminator, but end up trusting IT. the irony doesnt have to lie in the hands of the terminator either. He chose to make a statement (ironic one at that) that "these machines can kill us, yet we are the ones who created them, and programmed them" that would be a situational irony, but that was introduced in the first film.
-
Kubrick so much considering how much he respected Cameron. When Cameron went to meet him for the first time in the mid 90s in England, Cameron just thought it would be a short meeting over some tea/coffee type thing. Instead Kubrick broke out his print of True Lies and insisted they watch it on his projector. So Cameron ended up spending the afternoon watching True Lies with Kubrick while Kubrick constantly asked him questions about how he pulle dof many of the visuals and sequences in True Lies. Tis a true story...

SAG--i should just let it go..Laser is actually acting better
by six demon bag
my bad LAser, we can continue this conversation in a civilized way from now on.
-
and you had an oppertunity to meet him, if you told him that Cameron was overrated, he would have just looked at you funny, and then proceeded to find the fastest way to get away from you...
-
James Cameron surprise guest at E3 videogame show in LA. Possibly Avatar game footage and maybe ...trailer?Watch the live streaming from the conference at http://e3.gamespot.com/press-conference/ubisoft-e3. happening live right now.
-
dude. lol.
-
are just 100% fkn professional....
-
It is great to see a détente forming between everyone and Laser. Let us celebrate with a screening of Terminator 2 and 2001. Something for everybody.
-
just kidding
-
discussing film. Actually guys I must admit that I really am not a fan of 2001. Now before you call the men in white coats to haul me away, I absolutely respect how technically revolutionary it was, and make no mistake its expertly well made. Also love some of Kubricks films (Full metal jacket, barry lyndon, eyes wide shut, the shining). But for me I just find 2001 kind of boring. And its a very cold movie. Also, I always felt the end was just a cop out, like they had answers and so just went for complete ambiguity. imho thats not particularly creative, its almost like a get out of jail free card. Pose all kinds of interesting, complex questions...and then provide no answers of any kind, just make it so ambiguous so anyone can attribute any meaning they want to it. Thus everyone is wrong and/or right depending on what they think it means...
-
Yea anything we have seen previously shows the fighting being done at night, because as Reese said in T1, "you lay low during the day but at night you can move around" (not the exact quote but close enough). So that's a bit odd. As far as the resistance being well equipped, I am at a loss. I can only assume that not everything was destroyed during Skynet's initial attack. But it does seem like an awful lot of supplies were there for them. The giant robot, well I thought it was cool, but not really needed. Probably an attempt at pandering to the Transformers crowd. I did like the cycle Terminators though. One big complaint I have is the the middle of the movie didn't really feel like a Terminator movie, I said to my buddy who I saw it with "For a Terminator movie there don't seem to be many Terminators in it. The last 1/3 of the movie kinds made up for it, but for a short time I forgot I was watching a Terminator movie, and I should not have.Overall I would say it was an entertaining movie, the action sequences were well done, but there were many things that could have been done better. Sam Worthington was decent, I could see him becoming a decent action star. The Arnold thing at the end was, I have to say, pretty damn cool, and although i did not see Wolverine, my buddy said that it was a thousand times better than how they did Patrick Stewart. The CGI for the scene was pretty flawless. I admire the fact they they tried to do something different with this movie, and the good stuff in it just makes me think had they tried just a bit harder, it could have been a really great movie.
-
people, I could just never get into it...
-
But since AICN is lame and doesn't think much about gaming. They aren't covering, but later when they catch up. They'll post something about it.
-
Yeah, I'm listening to the conference right now. He did say the ending for Avatar would kick ass.
-
Did I just hear him right? He said December 18th was the release date! I'll have the clip up later tonight!
-
Did I just hear him right? He said December 18th was the release date! I'll have the clip up later tonight!
-
December 18th has been the release date for a while now. However, if you are lucky enough to live in France, Belgium or Egypt, you get to see it on the 16th.
-
could you please tell em if there has been any footage shown? Of either the film or game? And did he really say the ending would kick ass?
-
of either game or movie. unless he comes back on at the end! but there is a demo of the game at the convention apparently - in 3D. About the ending - he said it would be "the mother of all battles." Has Cameron done his bit - will he come back on? they're talking about splinter cell now.
-
wait for the official link to this..and not just a bunch of TBers..wow im jealous.
-
get more scoops these days than the staff. AICN has gone to the dogs - the talkbacks are the only reason to visit.
-
Yeah, Cameron didn't show anything, which is probably for the better. He did go into detailed description of the film. Told people not to confuse it with The Matrix. Said the female protagonist would be a hot, kick-ass heroine. He spent over a year just designing everything in the film. Said they made thousands of designs. He said that everyone who has seen parts of the film have described it as being in a dream. They called it the most immersive footage they have ever seen.
-
@marketsaw
-
Told us a lot of details about a lot of cool things! Release date of Dec 18th, Ubisoft making game in stereoscopic 3D... They'll probably demo the game behind closed doors for press under NDA... But a part of me hopes that maybe those rumors about Sony incorporating 3D into PS3 are true and we get to see a glimpse of it at their press conference... of course probably only the audience can see the trailer/whatever in 3D... Anyway... Marketsaw has some screenshots from the game up! Looks colourful! :D
-
/late with news (sometimes days) or they dont even post stuff. You really have to go elswhere for the latest stuff. Talkbacks really is the only reason to still come here.
-
pictures at marketsaw.com...Holy shit! That stuff looks incredible, based on what ive read in that old scriptment, and those pictures....man we could be getting one of the most epic, and just outright damn cool action set pieces ever....
-
are way better, and have me more excited than anything I have seen out of the big action movies this summer (be it the movie or a trailer) Like TS (which was crap imho), star trek (which i really enjoyed), TRansformers 2 (should have good spectacle, but will be the useal braindead bay movie), and gijoe (which lets be honest just looks retarded the more we see of it)
-
I have a feeling that Cameron might have finally made the quintessential sci-fi land battle.
This is what the Future War and the Battle of Naboo should have been. I get a sense that this will be for sci-fi battles, what LOTR was for fantasy.
This really could be for old fashioned sci-fi what Raiders was for serials. With Tom Swift, John Carter of Mars and this, maybe we have some good stuff to look forward to.
Boy, I am really gushing here. I am not sure I believe my own hype.
Oh, hell. I do. I can't wait. Don't fail me Big Jim. -
you just put it better than I ever could have. Especially your comment about this doing for sc-fi battles what LOTR did for Fantasy battles...
-
Anyway, I got to get some sleep. Have a good one southafricanguy. I will talk to you tomorrow.
In the mean time, check out this trailer for the upcoming Star Wars game that someone in another talkback posted. I wish Lucas could have done something like this in the prequels.

that picture that shows a gunship being attacked by those blue dragon type creatures? Fucking awsome to me...

love their design. Also love how the mech armour and the secfor troops look. Shit...im really starting to get hyped about this...

thanks for the link. Though I think we all wished Lucas had done it different

slammed either 2001, i didnt say it was shit, did I? I said it was expertly well made, and that I can appreciate its technical accomplishments. And there is no question that its been very influential. Also, I never slammed Kubrick. The man was a filmaking genius. Cmon Asimov..you know that that is the difference between what I posted and how others post where they call things crap. I made it very clear that what I said was nothing more than my opinion/personal tastes. I just happen to love Kubricks other movies much more. For example I happen to think Eyes Wide Shut is very underrated...
-
by saying that Cameron is overrated or crap, and then he argues it repeatedly while useing only very subjective points to put his position across..etc. Now you know thats not what I did Asimov....
-
because I am able to stand back from myself and admire and respect 2001/Kubrick for what it is, even if it doesnt personally appeal to me...
-
What you been up to dude? Have you checked out those new Avatar pictures at marketsaw?
-
What the hell is Cameron up to? Geezus, my expectations just jumped up a notch.Southafricanguy, how're you doing? Asimov what's good?
-
yeah, how fucking awsome are those pictures? Im really starting to think this realy could be the next big sci-fi movie (ala star wars, matrix etc..)
-
Cameron liked T3 because it didn't suck. Simple. Sorry, does that not mesh with your groupthink mentality? Who told you it sucked? You probably hated the Matrix sequels too, for the same reason.

I have complete confidence in his ability to push the boundries

Cameron is a master at this so i wouldnt worry about him messing this up. I am just dying to see a fucking trailer though, wtf.

I mean the real Heinlein 'Starship Troopers'.
Obviously (and referenced by Cameron himself) his inspiration for 'Aliens' and look at the mech shots for 'Avatar'.
I would love to see his concepts, action, and the truly foreboding feel for a humanity not certain of winning a war against two alien species at the same time.
I bet that he could really bring a gravitas to the boot camp training (ala Kubrick's 'Full Metal Jacket'). Instead of the Camp Cheese of Verhoven's training, which included the hardship of showering naked with ladies. How about the harsh training of dropping the troops naked in the middle of a forest during winter to fend for themselves only with a knife, to essentially become a survivalist out of nothing.
It is 'Band of Brother' for the Sci-Fi crowd.
Cameron is the man to bring that
kind of awesome to the screen. -
'Terminator' and 'Terminator 2' are fun, great sci-fi films. The brought some great effects (The T-1000), some interesting characters, introduces the concept of a time paradox (What came first, John Connor being born at all or John Connor first living to send Kyle Reese back in time to be his own father?), etc.
**SPOILERS**
First off, inhertitantly, we have three Terminator films that only hint at a future war with machines (which, I can honestly say that 99.9% of us want to really see) and deal with time travel. To me, time travel in all the Terminator films to a plot device to get everything to work. You can say that, not only was it the basis of the original film, but it was SkyNet's "Last Ditch" effort to wipe out John Connor's existance before the man was even born. Nasty plan, but effective. It was also stated by Kyle Reese that the Resistance "had won". The Arnoid sent back in time was it's final effort...that if it killed Connor in the future, that it wouldn't make any difference.Bringing things up to speed to 'Terminator Salvation'. Let's make a film, that totally ignores the canon of the original 2 films, tacking on parts of the third film for major plot devices.Mainly speaking of the following contradicting/continuity issues:
If SkyNet knows who Kyle Reese is and his importance, why not just kill him immediately? Holding him takes away the concept of even building time travel in the first place, unmaking not only plot points, but the other films altogether. Why even make a T-800 infiltration unit, when you have already made the Marcus Wright super infiltration unit? How does John Connor survive in a fight against the T-800, the same model that punched through Bill Paxton with one hit in the first film? Why is everyone using computers?
On the technical side of things, the film's cinematography is horrible. *NOTE TO CINEMATOGRAPHERS & MICHAEL BAY*
SHAKEY CAM MIGHT LOOK COOL ON A SMALL EDITING COMPUTER SCREEN WHEN THE HUMAN EYE CAN FOCUS ON A SMALL AREA. IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD ON A LARGER THAN A HOUSE SIZED SCREEN.Speaking of editing. One of the worst editing jobs I have seen. 'Jolting' is the only adjective I can think to describe it. Completely cutting the pace of a scene, without continuity into another scene, sometimes in the middle of dialogue. -
Writers - amuature and professional - come to this site for whatever reason that we all come here. We love movies.Things are pretty simple when writing a film into an already established series with set rules.Get a giant white board - They cost about $100 bucks for a good one of respectable size. One that white board, you list everything established, in this case original source material written only by Cameron (it is agreed the only source that matters). Now everytime that someone has a idea, premise, scene, concept, thought, sidenote, anything...match it against what's on that board. Heaven forbid that you have to watch the original films to take fucking notes.Secondly, foreshadowing sucks. Example: "Wow, you have a strong heart." later having it be the pinnacle plot point. That is hack amuature crap. We all know it.Ted: "Bob, where did you get that garden hose?"Bob: "Well Ted, I don't know where it came from but it's going to be important in the future somehow."Later on the garden hose is used to kill aliens that are attacking a planet with a high humitidy atmosphere to abduct entities that are 80% composed of water. NOT ORIGINAL, STUPID, ILL-CONCEIVED, and ABOVE ALL INSULTING TO YOUR AUDIENCE.

I have horrible vision in my left eye but perfect in my left. I never wear my prescription glasses. That means when I plan to see a film in 3D I have to put the glasses on in the morning to adjust my eyes to them and put the 3D ones over it. I forgot to do this for UP, and while some stuff looked cool, I know by discussions with friends I couldn't fully see some effects.
That said I look forward to Avatar in IMAX 3D and even more forward to Tron Legacy in IMAX 3D. Beowulf was amazing in that format
