I am – Hercules!!
Longtime readers know I hate most sitcoms, but NBC just sent along a clip from its new fall series “Yo Teach!” (starring the hilarious Mark Taylor Jackson) that made me laugh so hard I wanted to make sure even readers who don’t usually visit Ain’t It Cool's TV section got to see it:
Learn more about the series at NBC.com.
“Yo Teach!” hits NBC Sept. 27

Post, post.

Post, post.
-
Your parents must be very proud. Who's the actor that looks like Samuel Jackson's younger brother?
-
Gotta be a joke. Cause there's not one laugh in the whole clip. The "English is his biggest rival" is sorta cute...but geeeze. This will be gone faster than it can air.
-
yeah
-
Are they so desperate? SO DESPERATE, they pay AICN?
-
That was Raj from "What's Happenin'"
Hey hey hey, where's Duwayne? -
I knew you guys weren't that taste challenged but you had me worried for a minute ;)
-
This is like Nick at Nite hell...
-
Too bad "Funny People" doesn't look funny at all. Not. At. All. Really, it looks like a lame imitation of James L. Brooks. I hope I'm proven wrong, but considering they spelled out the entire plot in the pretty weak trailer, they're going to have to start advertising it a little better to get more people interested.
-
It had auto play, AND the fucking slider keeps moving with the mouse, even if you haven't selected the video.
Just fucking awful shit altogether. -
I didn't laugh once...
-
has grown up. Think he heads up the drama department as well?
-
It's dumb.
-
That clip was the opposite of funny...
-
Just jumped in without reading. Didn't know about the surgery recovery. Don't blame you one bit.
-
It's supposed to be cheesy!!! :-P
-
But, alas, they are sold out. Come on! If you're going to make a fake ad for a fake sitcom, then go all out and give me an entire fake season on fake DVD! Poor marketing for a movie, if you ask me...
-
I'd watch a sitcom with Schwartzman...
-
I guess it's some sort of inside joke thing where you had to be there or have seen "that", somwhere, but I didn't and it was lame....
-
and now I won't support that movie. Awful viral marketing idea.
-
Funny People just jumped up several notches for me now. RAJ, RAJ, RAJ, RAJ,
-
"HONK HONK!!!" Comedy gold.
-
That's how unfunny it was. I actually an stoned with a frown on my face because of how utterly stupid that was. I'm stoned and even I know that it's a fake show to promote something that I wont give money to.
-
I'm usually not very cynical when it comes to this site. But this type of blatant sell out just makes me sad.
-
That is what it says here for pimping a network...How much did they pay you Herc? Tell me, and the rest of the Haters, how much did it cost to buy your soul?
-

Note to AICN: if you do an ad post, turn off the talkback
by ricarleite2
It will do more damage to this piece of shit. Rememeber that book, that was going to have some 5 or 8 chapters posted here daily? The TBs DESTROYED that book apart, so the ad was suspended. We KNOW they pay you to post it here. If you keep the TBs, people will trash the advertised products.
-
Pathetic.
-
for a bag of cheetos and a Dr. Pepper.
-
Fuck you Chief Redcock and your Native American ways.
-
C'mon man... it's part of a viral campaign for the new Apatow flick 'Funny People'....
-
Did I miss the part where John Travolta makes a cameo?
-
Herc what were you on when you watched it and laughed so hard? PCP? Heroin? Weed? Coke? A BK Double Whopper?
-
...the thing is, though, as something that's obviously supposed to be a spoof of this type of show, it's still not very funny...
-
otherwise I wouldn't have known this was a viral ad. Now I'm off to re-watch the clip knowing its supposed to be bad.
-
Do I win a prize for being smarter than you?
-
I bet you think Dane Cook, Larry the Cable Neck, Jeff Foxworthless, Jackoff Black, the assholes from Clerks etc.... are funny as heel too. Fuckin' Hell that shit sucks!! This is the most played out type of lowest common denominator humor that could possibly exist. Seriously? I stopped it when the little fag started rapping. OMG this makes my head hurt.
-
Fake show or not, this wasn't funny.
-
Even for a parody it's just plain boring. btw. When will HBO air "Bored to Death" the new dramedy with Schwartzman?
-
...and how much did AICN charge for this fucking ad dressed up as a front-page "scoop"?
-
Long time lurker, first time poster. I actually took the time to create an account to respond to this item. I generally like and respect the opinions of the principles on this site, but for this one I felt I had to say something (pardon the French) "Are you fucking kidding me with this typical sitcom brain-dead drivel?
Its really a joke that I'm missing the point on right? JeeeeeeSus!!!
Sorry but that clip was the worst!!! -
And so is my post! I'm really the point of all; see, the clip was put out so this talkback would be created and now I'm I'm posting! Go see the movie when it comes out!
-
Please?
-
Point of IT all (see, I'm pretending like I'm a real poster).
-
... that wasn't funny in the least.
-
Was when Bill Murray fucked him in the ass.
-
Two words, Herc.."Biiitttch...PLEEEEEZE!!!"
-
A.) Jason Schwartzmann deserves better. B.) How many public schools are there with about 7 kids in the classroom?

I'm considering withdrawing Schwartzman's lifetime free pass
by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for
Whatever this was, it was terrible.
-
would recognize Jason Schwartzman, and realize it's a joke.
-
This was annoying and not funny at all.
-
Damn that's bad. Didn't laugh once. Herc hates sitcoms but then declares this shit funny? Wow.
-
was "You're wearing a sleeveless shirt and a winter hat"! The rest was a bad parody of a bad sitcom. Don't we have enough of those without viral movie ads posing as fake clips from fake shows now?
-
Once again... amazed by the stupidity of people on the site. THIS is why that clip is awesome... (1) - It's a FAKE show... but it's a fake show in a movie that's not a SPOOF movie. This means that the fake show has to have some sense of reality to it, and this "spoof" is DEAD ON. This looks and feels like a real "TGIF" type sitcom. It's not funny, you get where the humor is supposed to be, but it's not working because it's family time safe. (2) - I could buy that in a group of guys who are all in a comedy circuit type career, one of them would end up on a show they are likely embarassed to be on, but will do it for cash. (Saget?). the movie isn't out yet, but already I know Schwartzman is going to be wicked. (3) - FUCKING MAX FISHER BACK IN SCHOOL. All you idiots who are yelling at AICN for selling out to NBC are fucking morons. My brain hurts reading the comments. It's like a Youtube message board in here.
-
is that they expect to laugh at unfunny shit, because its unfunny ON PURPOSE.
NO THANKS. -
Oh a parody of the saved by the bell shows. Ha ha. I wish there was a punctuation besides period that would show my sarcasm and non enthusiasm for this show. This show looks like it has the lasting legs of a paraplegic. NBC went on the cheap and this show look gawd awful. AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY CANCELED MAY NAME IS EARL FOR THIS GARBAGE! Id rather have a whole have hour of Joy jumping for joy then this. Sorry herc I disagree with you so much on this its soured my respect for you. If it turns around and shows that im wrong I will go buy every single Buffy DVD's..I superduper blood oath serious on that.
-
thank god i fast forwarded to the end to see that it didnt go anywhere.
-
I love the new Hate Back approach. Reminds me of 1984 for some reason.
But, and this is key, Hollywood and it's minions if they read these hate backs learn ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY nothing from them. The same old tired shit gets regurgitated over and over again.
Hollywood can not understand that originals were better than remakes. No matter how many people hate hate hate remakes we get ignored.
-
I can't tell if this is real outrage I'm seeing on this talkback or mock outrage. It's funny because that could easily be put side by side with a lot of four camera sitcoms and you'd never be able to tell the difference. Now wheres that wacky neighbor?
-
Delightfully so for both.
-
i know NBC sucks donkey balls, but even they're not stupid enough to put this on their network...
or are they? -
May 29, 2009 4:54:30 PM CDT
drewlicious, can't discern the difference? Cracked up then?
by evilwizardglick
Real outrage.
-
Point proven.
-
It was WELCOME BACK KOTTER regurgitated for the 21st Century. The "F because of mistakes" joke was sort of funny...but the rest of it was very UNfunny.
-
maybe funny people is a parody of a james l. brooks movie.
-
ha, ok. now i'm not going to see the film.
-
...I just don't get how that makes it funny. They've just copied 70s/80s sitcoms exactly, without giving it that tweak that brings it over the top and creates the humor.
-
no thanks
-
but considering there's about a 50/50 ratio between those in on the joke and those who just think AICN sold out (after buying their way back in with all the money they got from selling out before), that took guts! And I'm getting that 50/50 thing from those who posted on the talkback; think about all of the bemused sonsovbitches who don't even read them! Even worse, what about the people who thought it was real and STILL laughed?!
(P.S. Schwartzman will own in Scott Pilgrim). -
Thank you for constantly cutting to the WIDE SHOT - Who's editing this?
-
This clip incorporated every sitcom cliche ever. Schwartzman would never stoop to something that low.
-
If this is a Viral stunt for the Sandler Rogan movie. You got me. I fell for it. I would not think a Aptow movie staring Sandler and Rogan would need a cheap cheesy gimmick like this. Still NBC Eff'ed up the they gave Earl the Axe. Once again they have Thursday locked up and they monkey with it and its gone. Now I guess we will see what the real show in the eight o'clock slot will be. if its this..God help them..Parody, gimmick or no..It was still unfunny. And yes I got the joke in second 1
-
Some people are saying now they wont see Funny People because this clip was not funny? Why?? This fake sitcom has really nothing to do with the movie Funny People, its just a creative way of introducing one of the characters in the movie, showing how one of them is now in a shitty and unfunny sitcom. Its not supposed to be funny, they made it as lame and cliched as possible...if you dont think its funny, then thats good, but that should be no reason to now not see Funny People.
-
Its from the movie Funny People. It's just viral marketing. What a bunch of stupid fucks. LMAO!
-
Oh my god you guys are such idiots. Oh man, this is the funniest talkback EVER. I seriously can't believe it.
-
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
-
This what passes for hilarity on US sitcoms these days? Wow. And I thought British sitcoms sucked. No wonder we're happy here with Friends being shown four times a day for the last five years.
-
This isn't a real goddamn show.
-
if we ever saw the actual Studio 60 show without the backstage frame. Kewl.
-
Thank fuck for that.
-
Thanks...
-
and there are STILL people posting comments that this sitcom looks shit. Either these people are in on the joke or there's a lot of fucking stupid people reading AICN.
-
hope it doesn't conflict with 227 reruns
-
They aren't being serious. It's making fun of all the old shows like Boy Meets World and stuff. So bad its hilarious. I laughed the whole time, but I don't think it could possibly last more than one episode. It would get stupid fast. Why is this on the front page?
-
comedy GOLD! I'm so there!
-
..not ever fucking see funny people, ever. You honestley expect people to sit in a theater for two hours of that shit. Are you for fucking real. I'd rather jerk off in a cheese grader. Time better spent. Oh ya, FUCK RAJ
-
no RENT!
-
Really?Drag Me to Hell made me laugh more than that.
-
I'm betting it's the latter reason. Isn't it always?
-
ITs was Rag from Whats Happening where Rerun ???
-
This just reaks of a middle-aged, white hack trying to make out he's down with the kids by taking notes to the Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight. That shit was dated 25 years ago, you crusty, offensive cumstain. Step outside the suburbs once in a while and see what the world's really like! I know it's only a shitcom, but still...what the fuck was this bullshit I just watched? You want to see how to portray real black characters, instead of this sick minstrel show? Watch The Wire.
Screw this noise, I'm gonna place a call to my man Spike Lee. Mark my words: this show will be taken off the air before it even gets to the second episode. -
Do you know anything about the movie Funny People? This sitcom is not the movie...its just a viral ad that is a clip from a tv show that one of the characters in the movie stars in. This sitcom has nothing to do with the actual movie. It was supposed to be as lame as possible....
-
I couldn't imagine this even being funny being put in context.
-
Yeah, I get that it's a parody, but I'm with mraig - it's not funny as parody (and even if I accept that it's meant as irony because sitcoms are not funny, what does it prove? That this movie can be as unfunny as a sitcom?). If Funny People tanks, this clip's gonna end up on Failblog. True story.
-
I could honestly see NBC running something like this as part of a Saturday/Sunday afternoon block of syndicated garbage.
It's obvious that it's a fake, but that's kind of the appeal. I laughed my ass off at every single cliched joke or bit of canned laughter. That they had Raj from "What's Happening?" only made me laugh harder.
Delightfully, it was everything you hate about 80s/90s teen sitcoms all rolled up into one. I laughed at this for the same reason why I laugh at Jason Lee's Earl Hickey or Ethan Supplee's Randy Hickey characters. They're so INSANELY stupid an borderline cartoonish that you can't help but wonder if they (the characters) are actual THAT stupid.
A clip like this is funny because every time you think that it's about as bad as it can be.... well... It just gets worse. LOL
You don't watch Godzilla for the spectacular effects. You watch for "man in suit." This clip is one giant "man in suit" moment, a funny but predictable dig at teen sitcoms masquerading AS a teen sitcom.
In the real world, this shit wouldn't fly as-is. However, with a smart writer, I can actually see such a parody working. A joke that lots of teens wouldn't get, but adults would gleefully eat up like Angelina Jolie's farts. -
and great beat.
-
that just don't get it. Or maybe they do get it, but choose to pretend they don't, that way they can rag on the site. Nerds love biting the hands that feed.
-
Unfunny at trying to be unfunny. PASS.. so utterly lame.
-
RECOGNIZE THE NEW SEINFELD WHEN YOU SEE IT? THIS IS GOING TO BE HUGE.
-
This clip is SOOOOOO bad...It has to be a "send-up" of sitcoms. It's like something out of David Lynch's "On the Air" from "The Lester Guy Show."
-
AND HIS 10 SPEED? WTF?
-
ALL THE TIME. IMAGINING A MASSIVE BUSH PEEKING FROM THE EDGES OF SOME PANTIES. TRUE STORY, THAT.
-
How bout the people that think they get it, downing the people they think don't get it. This cycle will never go away. And, there's nothing worse than those same people liking something that absolutely sucks asshole on every level telling people who DO get it that they don't get it because they don't like it and don't know that they actually do get it but that it just does actually suck asshole. You with me? **reads it back to self, checks for funniness, annnnd posts**
-
Because that shit was beyond terrible. TERRIBLE.
-
Who cares, whether you get it or not, whether you think its funny or not...it doesnt matter...it is a viral ad essentially for a movie that most likely WILL be funny. If the movie sucks, then we can blame the movie..this clip has nothing to do with it. I appreciate stuff like this because they take the time to make it when they dont have to. Im looking forward to the documentary they are making about Aziz's character in the movie Randy. If you have not seen Aziz's Randy character there are some clips of him on youtube, absolutely hilarious.
-
Damn people, Mark Taylor Jackson is the character name of Jason Schwartzman's character in "Funny People" - as many other talkbackers have said. It's on the NBC website because the flick is being released by NBC/Universal. It's called cross promotion, and this is no different than posting a trailer link for Toy Story 3 or a clip from GI Joe. For everyone bitching...the only proof that everyone needs that these goofy promos like this work is the fact that EVERY DAMN ONE OF US CLICKED AND WATCHED IT. Whether it was good or not, they got viewers and you'll tell other people. Who will have to see the horror for themselves. Was it hilarious? No, not really. Is it out of context from the movie? Absolutely. Take it with a grain of salt just like every other clip or 10 minutes of a movie. Personally, the best part of this clip was seeing Ernest Thomas on screen again in something that didn't involve sitting through "Everybody Hates Chris."
-
Why is it whenever something is really bad, contrarians will chime in saying that the detractors don't "get it"? Well this time I'm not going to just sit back and let you ream me with your illogic. It's a really bad sitcom...there's no subtext, undertones or hidden allusions; it's just bad. Maybe you can cope with it the same way one copes with elevator muzak, but I don't WANT to have to cope with this dreck. It's high time we, the viewers, tell the people who churn this stuff out that we're mad as hell and we're not gonna take it anymore!
That's it! I'm starting an online poll! -
I said the same thing above. Don't you get it?
-
Whats to "get" is that it is a fake show that they made to be the most stereotypical cliched and unfunny sitcom imaginable...that doesnt mean its "good" or "funny" or anything...it is what it is...its not real..its a fake show that exists within the world of the movie Funny People.
-
where to start?
-
May 29, 2009 6:16:17 PM CDT
it's a parody of all the things you're complaining about it bein
by badmrwonka
the trying to be hip teacher, the forced laugh track, the awkward teenage acting, the comedian (Schwarzman's character in the film presumably) forced into boring cliched pablum.why don't we all wait and see how it ties into any other marketing on the horizon before we start tearing our hair out and whining in the talkbacks, yeah?christ almighty, AICN talkbacks used to be geekfests, and yeah that means there was always some bitching. but it used to be about real stuff. now no matter WHAT the topic, WHAT the film, or WHAT the AICN persona writes, everyone just bitches and cries.it's really depressing for those of us who have been here for like 10 years and remember what it was like before all you angry, petulant jerks were here.
-
WE FUCKING GET IT!!! Please read mine and seppukudkurosawa's post above.
-
You got me, it's working.
-
I know you "get it"...whats your point...I agree with you that it is still not funny...its only funny thinking about real sitcoms and how they take all the old cliches and overdo them in this clip..but its not a big deal..its a clip of a fake tv show. Who cares? I'll judge the actual movie after seeing it, not based on this clip.
-
the point being - there's no point criticising this as being painfully unfunny when IT ISN'T A REAL SITCOM. It would be different to say it isn't funny KNOWING it's fake. Thats fair enough.
-
should be the gold standard used in why it might be a good idea to read a bit of the talkback in addition to reading/viewing the article BEFORE you post your own opinion. This is making me very amused.
-
"post", not "pos" - stupid lack of edit function!
-
WTF?
-
It doesn't matter what it's intentions are. It sucks. Even satirizing bad satire (sitcoms) is a shitty concept because even the source material sucks. This is like putting a piece of fresh poo in your mouth because it's like the old poo.
-
IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY. That's the point people seem to be missing. They aren't doing this in an ironic, spoofy way an winking at the audience. Schwartzman's character is the star of a shitty T.V. show, so they show a clip from the show which is completely shitty, unspectacular, and not funny. The joke in itself is what I find humorous, not the content.
-
I was being all meta and a smartass! Notice how the first post I made in this talkback had the line: "Even worse, what about the people who thought it was real and STILL laughed?!" Of course I got that it was a SERIOUSLY on-the-nose parody. So the people who thought my complaints were real are kind of like the people who thought the trailer was real.
I thought it was funny and kind of depressing, in that I actually think programs like That 70s Show are probably even worse. Maybe this'll start a campaign to ditch the laugh track from comedy programs. Is there anything that shines a light on people's sheep-like nature better than a smegging laugh track?! -
That is my point. It's lame. Don't even satirize it. Do not even entertain it. Let it lie in the forgotten halls of lameness. Very rarely can someone make something that is lame funny and these guys can't even seem to do that.
-
There is no coverage of Breaking Bad on here. Herc thinks shit like this is good. That and I guess he's never heard of Bo Burnham.
-
They wanted his character in the movie to be in a shitty show and not doing real comedy like some of his friends. End of story. Thats the only reason this exists.
-
Isn't that called satire? If you can't use humour to point out the shittiness of the world, then all we've got left is fart jokes.
-
I think I really really "get it." whoooo **wipes the "can't believe it" of my forehead and stares at my dog**
-
TERRRRRIBLE on every level
-
Well played, Apatow. I thought the preview for Funny People looked way too sappy, but this pretty much won me over.
-
What's Happenin!!!
Now we know where this guy ended up...
Dig up Re-RuN! -
I was on your side there partner. Please read my posts there sonny boy and you'll see that it DOES make sense.
-
get to work...old school.
-
Were the kings of taking (satirizing) "lame" and turning it into funny. That is one example and among a few exceptions.
-
Seriously, some of you guys are fucking retarded. http://www.youtube.com/user/boburnham

No Underoos Hero, the point is its stupid to criticize this
by thefreeman
You just sound dumb trying to critique a 30 second fake clip from a fake tv show...its like the fake trailers in Tropic Thunder (although parts of them were actually funny)...its just being used to show what kind of work this actor is doing and setting up his character in the movie. Maybe you should go to the site and watch the "behind the scenes" clip of the making of the show
-
And it made you laugh so hard??? wtf is funny to you man?
You have no humor at all...thats the funny part of it...dumbass -
"critiquing" is a detailed evaluation. I was just saying that it sucked is a milder form or critiquing er...uh...
-
Put out an uninteresting, unfunny clip that's supposed to be "making fun" of sitcoms when it's actually not much worse than the average sitcom, and what exactly inspires you to dig deeper and find what it's about? The only people who know what this is are people who know enough about Funny People already. Which, by the by, doesn't interest me either.
Go watch Extras for a much better example of how to spoof sitcoms. It was so bad it ended up being funny. This is just mediocre and boring. In fact, I kinda think the concept for the sitcom isn't that bad... -
May 29, 2009 6:46:19 PM CDT
Yeah, that wasn't exactly the Flying Circus or Brass Eye
by seppukudkurosawa
I'm pretty sure it wasn't even supposed to be all that funny. If it was an extract from the movie, it's probably followed by Schwartzman storming off the set and bitching about the kind of material he has to work with.
I suppose this just goes to show that you've got to bludgeon people over the head in order for them to get the point AND be funny. -
May 29, 2009 6:48:54 PM CDT
If it was funny/good in any way it would defeat its purpose
by thefreeman

Its not supposed to get people to see the movie...thats what the trailer is for.

It by itself is not supposed to get people to see the movie...thats what the trailer is for.

Shit I just realized how lame I am for being here talking about this. Goddamn it. ** makes new tab in Firefox to look at porn while keeping this tab open to refresh and see if anyone has posted a response to my comments ***
-
How exactly is anybody supposed to ever figure out this is from Funny People? I'm truly lost now. Making it difficult for people to find the product you're advertising isn't exactly the best advertising I've ever seen.
-
Getting US to unwittingly sell the movie for them.
Every time someone uses the words "Funny People" in this talkback, an Ad Wizard rubs their hands together and laughs maniacally. -
I can't believe I watched that whole lame thing.
-
I'd just like to echo all the people that said that even as a joke, this is still remarkably unfunny. And it has only made me want to not see/buy/read/eat/smoke or fuck whatever it is the spunkbelching guttersluts that made this are selling.
That Schwartzman twunt needs to remove his head from his colon. He is living proof that one simply cannot polish a turd. -
** comes back to check if anyone has commented on my posts. not yet. back to porn tab. **
-
The point of Viral Marketing is that when you DO finally find out the truth, the movie will be FAR more ingrained in your mind than if they'd just released a couple of movie stills or something.
I, for one, will not be manipulated. All these people saying it's promoting a movie called "Funny People" are studio plants. It's from a real sitcom- check the schedules in TV guide if you don't believe me. Don't believe these filthy lies! -
so whaddya playin at with this?
-
So, do you guys take payments now to post garbage like this?
-
thefreeman: Aha! I get it. It's the kind of expensive ad campaign that's not actually an ad. It's just sort of there. Makes sense now.
seppukudkurosawa: Alright I can understand that, but I still think it's a waste of time and money. I've seen viral marketing work before, but rarely. -
THAT was how you did a spoof sitcom. It was fucking hilarious.
ARE YOU HAVIN A LAUGH? IS HE HAVIN A LAUGH??? -
(Delete the spaces).
-
Believe it.
-
that When The Whistle Blows was the funniest part of Extras.
-
rather than a spoof sitcom - but granted it's still brilliant. As is everything on The Day Today.
-
Jesus.
-
"I Do NOT Understand Viral Marketing"
that much is clear, sir... -

I think we need about 50 more "This is a joke, right?" posts.
by prbuick
Acceptable alternatives:
"What is this shit?"
"AICN sold out."
"Herc is an NBC whore."
You get the idea. Keep 'em coming, guys.
-
It's on an NBC web site and yet Canadian viewers can still access it. NBC embeds NEVER work in Canada.
-
Honestly, the only funny thing about that clip is the wide shot that shows how few students are actually in the class. The rest is just poor writing, even by parody standards.
-
PIECE OF SHIT. FFS. HORRID.
-
The parody was top notch, but *way* more fun is reading the talkback morons fretting about how Herc sold out, and that they don't think this sitcom looks very funny. Really?!? You don't?!? Wow, you really are a discerning viewer.
-
May 29, 2009 7:37:51 PM CDT
The whooping and cheering after the 'rap' is like a real show!
by performingmonkey
And cheesy applause for a character entry. People would probably lap this shit up if it were real! Now suck it. Fuck me so hard I can taste rubber in the back of my throat.
-
Forgot to get your irony chips installed on the way to Comic Con. This is a fucking dead on sitcom parody.
-
We have a new record: It's a sitcom that "jumped the shark" even before its first episode was broadcast! What the heck is Herc smoking?
-
That's Bo Burnham - Internet sensation for white goofy rapping. Youtube himand what don't you idiots get? It's a fake viral ad to just get more exposure out for the movie. It's the same thing as when they released the "Michael Cera freakout on Judd Apatow when auditioning for knocked up" or the trailer for the fake documentary for Tropic Thunder.
Go to filmdrunk.com and find the post about this to understand it more. I really don't know if Herc thinks this is a real show or understands it's a viral video introducing a character from Funny People.Of course it's not meant to be funny jackasses - it's supposed to show an actor on a typical, shitty, canned-laughter cheesey sitcom. Sometimes you people just blindly hate so you can complain about shit. -
Notice which section of the site this article is on...
-
"This sucks. I wonder if it's real. I think I'll Google the actor's name even though it sucks". Okay.
-
NBC misunderstand viral. Which imbecile if going to forward this on? Uh, that was a rhetorical question Herc.
-
Ah, yes, upper management strong-arms a teaching into giving a jock-douchebag a non-failing grade because otherwise he'll miss the big game. Meanwhile in the real world, this happens all the time and the kid will get a full scholarship to a first rate college that should otherwise go to someone, oh, I don't know, call me crazy, WITH BRAINS! GAAHHHHH!!!
-
If it's and ad for something else, that's even worse. It's unwatchable. I hope AICN didn't get paid for me "watching" it.
-
and then i shake hands with kings
-
Problem is that it doesn't matter if it's satirical, it's not funny because it has nothing to say about the original stereotype, and it's not even exaggerated enough for crude humour. Just looks like Echo Beach in a classroom to me.
-
This is a pretty crappy viral marketing campaign. Talk about a swing and a miss for the Apatow crew. It's one of those jokes that seems really funny to the people who cooked it up, but it's really only funny to them because they were involved with it.
-
...dioxholster chimes in with "cunts & kings". Thanks for clearing things up, D-man.
-
apatow has his finger on the pulse of everything that is bad in network sitcoms
-
I'm not even gonna try to be funny. I don't get it. What is that?
-
for the millionith and hopefully last time, this is a fake tv show in the world of Funny People. (upcoming Apatow movie) Smart money says that in the movie, Schwartzman's character will get ragged on for how terrible his show is.
-
....it's just not funny at all. Not even as a parody of bad sitcoms. Viral marketing is supposed to make you want to go see the movie, but this just doesn't do it for me. In fact, it makes me want to NOT see the movie. If I need a lame sitcom fix, I'll watch Nick at Nite. I bet this little bit of viral marketing dies a quick death because I really think the overwhelming response to this is going to be negative. Even though it may just be a parody, if this is indicative of the comedic content of the movie, then I'll pass. This movie is supposed to be about funny people right? (Hell that's the title). If you want to go for parody, how about some fake clips of a stand up comedian telling terrible jokes so bad that they're good and completely bombing while the audience boos and throws stuff at the stage? How about a comedian getting into it with a heckler a la that guy that played Kramer, sans the racist tirade? I think something like that would be more entertaining than a send up of a lame sitcom.
-
And now I have cancer.
-
but he had cancer.
-
...than this shit. Where the hell are TV writers coming from these days? Nickelodeon rejects? Graduates from the Steve Marmel School of "Comedy"? (Marmel is a dude who writes shows like Fairly Oddparents, Yin Yang Yo and Sonny With A Chance. Yessir, we're talking boffo laff riots.) Well, I guess this is what happens when the post-M*A*S*H generation who grew up with Saved By The Bell enters the comedy writing field. And start dropping their own fragrant version of "cow flop" on it.

OH, so it's Apatow...I get it...that's why it's not funny.
by feralangel
Makes perfect sense now.
-
Take the money & run.
-
...and over there on the left is all of you dumb fuckers missing it.
Oy vey. -
Got me, LOLed. Great seeing Raj. Fuck the TBers that couldn't tell that a clip with the production value of Reba and starring Jason Schwartzman wasn't a fucking JOKE.
-
Now THAT was cool!!!
-
Is a marvelous idiot detector.
-
There's a show I can get behind. Come to thnk of it I like the look of "Slowly Rotating Black Guy" as well.
-
.....
-
Not funny. Laughtracks are also annoying.
-
or shit
uhm . . . no
I wanna watch Slowly Turning Black Guy on FOX!
-
Does the word "sell-out" mean anything? Anything at all?
-
... because it makes me want to avoid Funny People at all costs. It was bad. It wasn't funny in even an ironic way. Good plan, guys. Take a giant steaming dump on my eyes so that I'll go see your movie. Nothing gets me wanting to see a film more than having someone BORE and ANNOY me. Sheer genius.
-
The control design sucks bad too to add some extra bad to the experience.
-
This is a fake talkback response for a fake website known as AICN. What the fuck is real? Who knows...
-
He needs to chime in here and pay his dues to the man who made him...
-
............
-
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
-
seeing Ernest Thomas --"Raj"--back on a sitcom, even it it's fake. Fuck the sanctimonious Apatow, though.
-
automatically makes it funny. Jesus Christ people, ya'll are dumber than a bag of hammers.
-
I honestly thought that there was no way anybody could think this was a real show. ...I stand corrected. I'm dumbfounded.
-
jesus harold christ. that was balls deep in awful. i do hope that it's not indicative of the film. it's gotta be a "look what can happen to a stand up when he sells out" bit or something. Man, i love that Schwartzy little mother fucker...
-
and saved by the bell. Damm you crap viral advertising!
-
That's as lame as most SNL skits! It's supposed to be a take off of sit coms? If it's an ad for a real comedy show, even one that mocks this kind of sit com shit, it still isn't funny! If it's an ad for something else, I have no idea what nor any inclination to find out.
-
Dumb
-
This was just a waste of my time. Herc and her silly sense of humor.
-
The idea that this ludicrous pap is the best sitcom of the year! You are too ironic, dude! If I hadn't realized the joke was on the lamesters who wrote and created this show, I would barfed repeatedly.
-
Sitcoms are parodies. Sitcoms take reality and push it to absurd lengths to try and milk some humor out of "real" situations. Parodies take something and push it to absurd lengths in order to reflect back on the absurdity of the original. So you can't parody a sitcom because a sitcom is already a parody. What you can do is just create a really bad sitcom, which is what happens here.
-
If you're going to make movie called FUNNY PEOPLE, it should contain - you know - funny people. This is not a promising start.
-
None more stupid than you.
-
I like that it has Jason Schwartzman and Roger Thomas from What's Happening. But even as a fake show...
-
The Grindhouse "coming attractions" were hysterical. I still laugh at the thought of that Thanksgiving movie. Was that the one with the cheerleader bouncing on a trampoline and as she lands to do a split, a knife sticks out of it? And what about the trailers in Tropic Thunder? Anyway, this type of thing CAN be funny, this just isn't. My guess is Schwartzman plays a funny guy who had to "sell out" and do this tv show.
-
Do thes huge ensemble casts ever do well? Did "He's just not that into you" do well? This seems to follow the same formula.
-
Please explain every post you make as if your intended audience is 5 years old, because I am getting too old to read this level of asshatery...

The reason this site is dying isn't just the douches in charge..
by hercules_will_die_alone
it's also the mouth-breathing idiot retards who come here. Good God there were still people 80% of the way in the talkback down that thought it was real. People who shouldn't have thought it was real to begin with. You fail at life that bad, you need to arrange a meeting with a bullet.
-
...a parody of a sitcom and its not mocking a sitcome. If it was funny, it would defeat its own point. It is a depressingly realistic recreation of an actual horrible sitcome. The Disney Channel has a whole network devoted to the idea. The fact that its so horribly not funny is the point.
Somebody up above lambasted this for trying to be like Andy Kaufmann. I kind of agree, but I think this talkback proves its exactly like Kaufmann, in that it provoked a bunch of dumbasses into railing against something that is fake, but was designed to get dumbasses to rail against it. Brilliant! -
GIANT PIG!!!
-
Okay. Next story, please.
-
It's a fake. You can even watch the so-called "EPK" for this so-called "sitcom" now, too:
http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2009/05/funny-people-has-bo-burnham-virals -
all the talbackers who are bitching about a shitty new show on nbc is.
-
This whole talkback was seven and a half minutes of some kind of bitter, beautiful catharsis.
But, now I now take leave to sit in the corner of the room and cry. A customized user-specific tear will fall for each and every post that involved genuine, unfiltered Interwub Indignation.
I may be some time. -
...did i type 'sitcome' twice?
-
This is killin' me... Not Yo Teach, per se, but everyone's reaction here. Remember folks, the fact that you hate this *is the point*. And it's good that you do. If you didn't, if even thought it was funny for a moment, then you're precisely the kind of vapid tool that the parody is targeting. :)
-
Now I look like a bandwagon poser, following flummage, ottomatic, LetoIII, etc. Oh well, fuck me!
-
so is "funny people" not supposed to be funny then? If the point was to show how not funny the sitcom is, then why would I see the real thing? To see how funny they REALLY are, but see how they made bad life choices? Perhaps its to show that you have to "sell out" to get a job, leaving funny at the door. In any event, the REAL point is to get me to watch the movie and I honestly don't want to. FAIL.
-
Funny or not, the point of this is to intrigue you enough to look farther, and eventually find out about the movie Funny People. Even if Apatow isn's asking that much of you, at the very least it should spurn interest in the movie. It really hasn't, so it has failed by every account. And no, talking about it as I am now doesnt mean its successful. I'm still not interested enough to see it.
-
because this lame ass parody isn't any different than a half dozen pilots that are being made as we speak, many of which will be on the fall schedule. So if the joke is how un-funny the sitcom is, by making a sitcom that is not funny then you can't blame people for not knowing the difference when there is no fucking difference!!!! Jeez! Look what you made me do!
-
Say Schwartzman's character has to deal with everyone hating him and hating himself because he's part of a really horrible yet inexplicably popular sitcom. And this viral shit is just to establish ahead of time how god awful the sitcom is. Probably won't work but who knows...
-
yes!
-
This is a load of shit, man. Who the fuck thought that making someone sit through five minutes of some unfunny soap spoof to get to the mildly amusing 'real' trailer was a good idea?
-
Yes, When the Whistle Blows is a better sitcom parody. Chris Martin from Coldplay drops by the factory as himself, in a work uniform, to promote his new album!?! Fucking classic!
-
Is Gervais throwing a tantrum about how they have cheapened his vision of the show, and then the BBC guy saying, okay, you have two choices, you can do what we say or go back to obscurity and start over. And that shuts him up. It is the most basic truth of show biz - there are always compromises to be made and no real control.
-
...is the framing. It's like they have a classroom, and then an extra half room with nothing in it where the camera is. This is the biggest classroom in the history of classrooms. And this silly fake tv ad inspiring *this* much talkback is hilarious.
-
first off, this clip was posted on every other film news site last week, so way to miss the mark aicn. but more importantly, you all need to chill the fuck out. stop ripping into the movie cause of the fake t.v. show. it's actually funny if you get over the fact that you're so retarded you thought it was real. you're just upset cause you got duped and you can't admit it. you didn't get pissed off when tropic thunder had the fake trailers in the opening, but you all would have shit fire if those trailers came out in viral marketing before the movie was released. cut it some fucking slack. the movie's supposed to be great.
-
He's Just Not That Into You is the #9 highest grossing film of 2009, almost breaking $100mil in theaters alone. So, you're a fucking douche bag retard and you need to get the fuck off this site until you know what you're talking about.
-
It's not supposed to feel like 2009. It's supposed to feel kinda like 1989 meets 2009. Which is exactly what it does. Those of you born before 1989 should know this? None of the major 7 networks release shows like this anymore. Yeah, maybe they make this kind of stuff for The Disney Channel or ABC Family, but what the fuck are all you doing watching the Disney channel?
-
Are you sure you want to ask fellow talkbackers "what the fuck are all you DOING watching the Disney channel?"
-
for wasting my time on this piece of shit.
-
Say...Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, or the now, I daresay, classic, Strangers with Candy. It's a little too nudge nudge wink wink. They can't be in on the Joke if it's gonna be funny.
Now the question is: where is this going? Is this just one piece of a sketch show? Just a viral pilot to see what these guys could do? -
...and who haven't read any of the above posts stating that it's from "Funny People."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwwSf8WeJSo -
Don't be a bad egg, eh?
I have no contempt for audiences, only a rejection of the idea that those trying to try something new, or ironic, or deconstructive or even pretentious -- whether it ultimately is successful or no -- be brought down because their audience doesn't understand it, or doesn't approve.
Artists are allowed to screw things up; whether it's the status quo, or their own attempts at breaking it.
Anyway. We're on an AICN talkback. Laugh in the face of madness, Johnny. It may ease your indigestion. -
anyone? Sadly this is better than most of the real crap that's going to be on in September. Click the link and check the website. the forum replies are outstanding.
Double post = stupid frackin' talkback form!! -
he will save his allowance for Transformers II and X-Men 17, thank you very much. Excelsior!

starfish wieners are more compelling than this shit
-
To the people saying this makes them not want to see Funny People because the movie will just be a 2 hour version of stuff like this, you are wrong and obviously have no idea what funny people is about and have not seen the trailer for the movie. The fake show "Yo Teach" will probably be mentioned like twice in the movie and thats it, like the fake movies the characters in Tropic Thunder were in.
-
I'm sure I wrote "I

I'm surprised none of them have chimed in by now telling us whether this clip was in the actual film or made up special like.

And I just contributed another one. And now another one. I'm quitting before I do any more damage.

Don't get indignant about Disney Channel shows. They're nothing like this. I'm an admitted Disney Channel fan and apologist, but at the same time - those shows are innocent fun that lack the deep cynicism of YO, TEACH in the clip. The shows on Disney Channel are, at heart, pure silly sitcom fluff meant to be nothing more than pure silly sitcom fluff. And kids (and I) laugh from those shows, and I admit I'm an adult but I still laugh. They can be funny - they're not brilliant farce or satire, but you know ... sometimes I just want to hear a little silly verbal banter and witness a few pratfalls and have a heartwarming ending. It's liek vaudeville - people went in and got what they were looking for and nothing more than that. Leave it alone - it's harmless! YO, TEACH on the other hand - that's really parodying the more custom-built crap machines of late 80s early 90s sitcom tv.

My God! It's a pile of crap that's less funnier than Leno!
by mrmysteryguest

we'll miss you & Earl.
This crap will last until the midseason replacements...
I can't believe someone in marketing approved this to be allowed to "Share!"... -
This is not a parody in the tradition of, say, Austin Powers or the Naked Gun. It is not exaggerating the absurdities or cliches of a particular genre/type of show for comic effect. There simply is no exaggeration -- it's pure imitation. It's not supposed to be funny, except whereas the audience knows that there are indeed TV shows this bad. In the "real world" of Funny People, this show is just another formulaic, traditional sitcom. I assume if this show is a plot point in Funny People, it will be that the show is indeed bad and unfunny. That's the point. It's not actually funny, in an objective sense, because the shows it is imitating are not funny. And in the context of the movie, it also isn't parody -- it's the real thing. And in a movie about comedians, such a plot point has a lot of potential (say, to observe a comedian actually selling out, and dealing with what the means to his integrity and career). And that's why I think this viral marketing works. It has me more interested in the movie because I think that is an interesting and worthwhile theme.

just a really lame disney channelesque sitcom. a parody would be the "What's goin down episode of That's my Momma!"
-
where was the funny clip at?
-
it's some viral commercial for an upcoming movie... but the 'honk honk' from Raj made me laugh.
70's blaxploitation comedy retorting whitey is still funny to me.
however I still have no interest in researching whatever movie this is s'posed to promote... and the advertisement was geared for me, yes? late 39 year-old raised on 70's television... -
Hercs really lost his mind.....lol
-
There is nothing in that video that makes me want to watch Funny People.
-
"Have you guys seen the trailer for The Fatties: Fart Deux? It looks like absolute shite. How much did Harry get for posting it on AICN? Oh! It's just a viral fake trailer for Tropic Thunder. But it's so shite, that I won't even see that film. Who would want to see Tropic Thunder if its standards are like this Fatties trailer?"
This sitcom is not what the film will be about or like. It will most likely not even be in the film in this form. -
the only other "Hey teach"er in this movie?
-
How much did Harry sell out for to start pitching viral campaigns for movies instead of reporting "cool news"? And as far as viral campaigns go, this did not inspire me to see a movie. Maybe if there was a lead in that told me that the movie was about the people trapped in this piece of shit I might be interested, but on it's own it is a piece of shit that made me wish that by stabbing my own eyes out I could unsee it!
-
at least "Fatties fart deux" went that extra step to LOOK like it was making fun of certain movies (cough cough Klumps cough) I suppose Family Matters was an ingenious parody of TGIF sitcoms without letting us in on the joke then, wasn't it?
-
that just wasted my time
AIN again. Aint it News. Cool...no. -
Adolescence is a tough time for all of us. This clip really made me think. It taught me a lot about myself, and how maybe I should have faith in ME and not what others think of me.
-
... people thought this was a real show? Holy shit. if this keeps up, there will enough demand for the desperate NBC network to kick "Yo Teach" into production with a 13 ep. order. Would that be life imitating art?
-
..its fucking funny though. the clip. spot on.
-
Is it just me or is most of the stuff posted here ads posted as news items (like this story and many many more) or old stuff posted as new news. Oh and competitions. Oh and freebees the poster got and has decided in his/her infinite kindness to review or plug. But hey at least more often than not news items are posted in a smug way by people who think they are superior to us plebs which is another thing I love about this place. Oh and lame attempts at humour. Feel free to add to this list of fun things about aicn. Yawn
-
CheeseFest
-
I can't believe how many posters here aren't figuring that out. Actually, I take that back. I can believe it.

Whatever this is selling, I'm there.

Because they don't put sitcoms like this on network television today. I wish they did. I miss them. ABC should bring back TGIF.
-
Some of you people are beyond fucking thick.

Then, walk away from the television and make a shit sammich.
-
for classes that small.
Oh, and Jason Schwartzman's totally got the Gabe Kaplan role in Welcome Back Kotter. So which of these sweathogs is going to wind up a Scientologist with his own 707??? -
...except the "jock" was Freddy Boom-Boom Washington. I mean this clip is virtually identical to an episode of Kotter. So they got a black "Mr. Woodman"...whoopie shit. This isn't funny on top of that. I mean, if you're going to rip off something, at least do it well.
-
even though the show is fake. I laugh hardest when the teacher cuts off the smart student trying to explain iambic pentameter.
-
Return that bankroll to NBC. And the badge that admits yourself and a date to the Leno show (the entire season). And the fruitcake. Yeah, a real riot...ABBOTT AND COSTELLO IN THE FOREIGN LEGION is a comedy classic compared to this stinkbomb. Match it with a "Kevin and Kel" reunion Show.
-
At most I smiled, but was mostly bored by the clip. The joke with the girl and the iambic pentameter didn't work because the girl didn't seem to know what the hell she was talking about.
-
I can't wait to buy the 2 disc dvd edition with this lame flopcom on it. Tired of all the Apatow extras. Most of them are boring and tired. Same thing on each film's dvd. Not everything he does or his directors do is funny and worthy of the light of day.
