Woody! Buzz! Aliens! Rex! Slinky! Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead! Jessie! Toy Story 3 Teaser Trailer in glorious Quicktime!

Published at:  May 29, 2009 1:27:21 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Not only does this trailer instantly make me wish it was next summer, but it calms any fears I had that we've moved on from TOY STORY. Seeing Woody, Buzz, the army dudes, Rex, Jessie and the rest of the toys together again, hearing Rickles, Hanks, Allen, Cusack et al instantly brought me back into that world. I am so damn excited for this one. Makes me want to throw in the first two right now as I work... Just might do that...

As the aliens say... Oooooooooooooooooooooooo....

The Toy Story franchise is shaped like the great TV shows, where you just dig spending time with the characters. It's been years since Toy Story II came out, and yet the second I saw this I just started grinning and went back to the mindset of the 14 year old who saw that film and just loved every second of it.

What do you mean "forced"? They didn't hold a gun to their head but the odds are that a Toy Story 3 was part of the deal when Disney bought Pixar. Lassiter didn't want to do it, but just went with the necessary evil to achieve the greater good (more valuable stock options).

You know, like video game characters? Maybe they can talk to the other toys when the game is turned on, via the TV screen. Or something. Anyway, I hear that TS3 has a very good story behind it, which was the impetus behind Pixar making Toy Story 2, so I have high hopes for this.

Cuz Toy Story II was a perfect sequel. Wrath of Kahn level sequel. I'll be interested in seeing in Toy Story 3 is an unusually high-quality threequel. I'm betting it will be. I'm willing to bet Cars 2 is better than Cars, and wins three or four of the Cars haters over. I enjoyed Cars all right--Paul Newman being a large part of that, but, still. 'Mater and the Ghostlight, the Cars short on the DVD, was a heckuva a lot of fun, from beginning to end. And cut out the NASCAR storyline from Cars, the characters are a lot fun and Radiator Springs was awesome . . . the judge giving the know-it-all race car a lesson in humility . . . lots of good stuff in Cars. Better than any of the Dreamworks movies, excepting Kung Fu Panda.

    by ribbons

They could easily come up with some villain like The Underminer or whatever to fight, but it wouldn't be the same without the family drama, all of which I think was pretty well covered by the end of the first film. If Brad Bird or Pixar comes up with a story in the same universe that they really want to tell, I'd happily pay money for a sequel, but I wouldn't want to see them do it just to do it.

You've got it backwards, bub. That original Toy Story 3 project was being worked on by DISNEY without PIXAR's approval, by some sham animation studio the house of mouse cobbled together basically as a huge bluff ("See? We can do this without you. And if we fuck it up, 1. You'll always know you could have stopped us, and 2. We don't really care, because while it may be partly our baby too, you've always loved it more.") Anyway, what we're getting next summer is the PIXAR-approved version.

    Toy Story 3 memories...

    by bubcus

Several years ago I recall reading an interview wherein Pixar was saying that if they were to do a sequel to Toy Story 2, it'd involve Andy outgrowing the toys and focus on his little sister and the introduced cowgirl character.
When Pixar and Disney were divided, Disney had the rights to Toy Story even though Pixar considered it their little baby. Disney was in the habit of pumping out direct to video sequels (which is what Toy Story 2 was initially meant to be but turned out TOO GOOD to dot hat to) and they decided to make their own Toy Story 3.

The Disney version of Toy Story 3 was again to be a direct-to-video sequel and with Pixar not involved, would have likely been decent or mediocre.

When Pixar and Disney re-merged and Lassetter was put in creative control, he took his baby back and we are, seemingly, getting that storyline from all those years ago that involves Andy growing up.

You are mostly right but Pixar is owned by Disney so they are not "making their own Toy Story without Disney". They ARE Disney. Like I said, Lassiter is just making this to make Disney execs happy and because they probably have a script that doesn't suck so bad that it will keep him up at night. I'm sure it won't be crap like the Shrek sequels, but it is unlikely i will live up to the quality of Toy Story 2...they just set the bar too high for that one. But I doubt it will totally suck.

The Truth about the Disney / Pixar Split

You don't know anything about the Disney/Pixar split or Circle 7 studios unless you were there. Please have a bit more respect for the many talented artists, technicians and production people who took a chance on working on Toy Story 3 because they believed they could absolutely do it right and pay homage to a great film franchise. Circle 7 was a great place to work and the feeling there was exciting and positive. If you could only see the test shots that came out of there you wouldn't talk so badly about it.

    You've got another thing wrong...

    by cleanbreak

Rupee88, you're dead wrong. TS3 was kicking around Pixar for many years after TS2 was done. It's not being made to placate anyone at Disney - if you knew John Lasseter you'd know he would never do it that way no matter WHO told him to. He is totally in charge of both Pixar AND Disney animation now and everything done at both studios has his stamp of approval or it doesn't fly, period.

Disney worked on a non-Pixar Toy Story 3

    by tall_boy66

Short version - Disney/Pixar almost split (or did, I don't quite remember), Pixar wanted to do it's own thing, Disney went off and started on a TS3 without Pixar, but they kissed and made up in the end so it's all Pixar Toy Story 3 now and not "forced" by Disney.

    by white_vader

what I was going to say was that you yourself may be TOO close. I agree that all the artists/animators would have done their absolute best, as they have done time and again on Disney Animated features. BUT if you don't think C7 TS3 and the creation of circle 7 was born out of Eisner's/Disney executive spite and egomaniacal powertripping you need to get some objectivity. It would have been yet another project fucked by the pathetic suits. Yes the artists do their best but have been fucked over time and time again. Hopefully that's changed with the new regime.

One thing that doesn't really get talked about is that Lasseter and Catmull at least TRIED to place C7 employees on other jobs. Probably not much solace to many, but at least it's better than the fucks that were ruling the roost beforehand. Remember how those fucks went 3d for Dinosaur, letting all the 2d guys who didn't want to change over go? Remember how they sold all the traditional animation desks? And then when it tanked they fired THE 3D GUYS? 'Cause yeah, I guess somehow it's always the fault of the guys inthe trenches... And then somehow a few years later they fired the 2D guys AGAIN because for some reason 3D was magically the future... again?! But it never occurred to these arseholes THEY (and their stamping all over the writing and development) were the problem? THESE were the guys behind the mean-spirited joke that was circle 7. We have the utmost respect for the many talented artists, techies and peeps. But that's one huge, head-in-the-sand chance you're talking about dude.

Oh, that made ME remember - FUCK David Stainton. Grrr.

The gags were spot on in typical Toy Story fashion, and the "you guys were worried line" was clever and actually reassuring, but when am I going to get my Bug's Life sequel ?!?

Seeing Slinky in the trailer made me sad

    by nasty in the pasty

I kinda wish they did what the Simpsons did after Phil Hartman died and retired the character after Jim Varney's death. Yeah, all we've heard is a grunt so far, but I always find it distracting when an animated character gets a voice change.Still, this teaser made me smile overall. PLEASE don't screw up the best sequel ever made with a lame threequel...

    by feralangel

Quoth Michael Eisner. Next to "Mission Accomplished", it's the lamest, most clueless, most head-up-any-given-assedness public pronouncement ever. Oh, and the new Muppet comic books suck toad ass. My kid can draw better than that.

Then you can see it as it was meant to be seen: in true 3D. Plus you get to see another great Pixar flick.

Saw Up, no TS 3 trailer

    by earl warren

Up was great, but the theater was missing the Toy Story 3 trailer. I won't be going back because I complained to the management (I know, complaining about a lack of a trailer is probably pretty petty) and I got essentially a shoulder-shrug in response.
I tried not to get too out-of-sorts, but I mostly was pissed because my wife is a HUGE TS fan and was really looking forward to seeing the trailer on the screen.

Yup. You'll get old and no one will love you anymore. Two hours of that. It's enough to make you commit suicide. What a cheer little topic for a kiddie film.

One of the greatest animated films ever made gets pilfered again. TS2 honestly pissed me off. One of several films I've walked out of ~ a bunch of retreaded tripe. I will not see this under any circumstances. Boo on all accounts. Enjoy more toy sales, Pixar.

You walked out of Toy Story 2? Are you effing nuts? Yes, it's true that most sequels suck, but Toy Story 2 is one of those rare exceptions to the rule. Toy Story 2 is one of the best sequels ever made. A sequel that's as good as (if not better) as the first one.

Whether Toy Story 3 will be as good as the first two, I don't know. But knowing Pixar, it will be at least very good if not great. I don't think they would make Toy Story 3 if they didn't have a great story worth telling.
