Spielberg's TINTIN gets a release date!

Published at:  May 29, 2009 6:48:45 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. In a weird, but not surprising, move Steven Spielberg's motion capture trilogy kick-off THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN will be released in the US December 23rd, 2011, two months after it sees international release.

According to Variety's Tatiana Siegel the pic is scheduled to hit international screens in October or November 2011. Like most ignorant Americans I only know TINTIN's face, never having dug up the Herge comics as a kid. So, it doesn't surprise me they're hitting up International first as TINTIN is a much bigger deal everywhere outside America.

The other bit of news in the article is that they confirmed a 3-D release for the flick. After having seen the CHRISTMAS CAROL Cannes reel, I think performance capture animation in 3-D is pretty damn wicked and can't wait to see one from the combined imaginations of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson.

What think you?

I loved it as a kid and I can not believe the amount of people in North America have negligible or no knowledge of Tintin. The stories are great and perfect for both kids and adults alike. What disappoints me more than the fact that so many people do not know about Tintin, is the amount of morons that dismiss something without any knowledge of what they are talking about. Why not educate yourself before you start ripping into something that you know little or nothing about...hmm wait... and informed opinion in AICN talkback, what was I thinking.

    by ricarleite2

If five years ago you said Spielberg, the man who defended film so badly and said he would do Indy 4 with practical effects only, would do a MOTION CAPTURE 3D FLICK, AICN would LAUGH at you. Also: releasing a movie on international markets before doing so in the US is NEVER, EVER a good sign. They will deliver a stinkbomb piece of shit, and they ALREADY know it. If you release an american movie outside the US first - except for Cannes - odds are you have a crappy movie and you want to avoid bad publicity by getting the overseas profits first.

Releasing a movie internationally first IS a good idea when nobody in the US even knows what the hell it is. TinTin is huge internationally, and an afterthought in the US market. And last I checked, you can make just as much money internationally as you can here. This way, you can get 2 months of good buzz internationally to build up interest here for a Christmas release.

    by ricarleite2

OK, so explain The Mummy 3, 88 minutes, Legionnaire, Sudden Death. All released on international markets first. But on this case, I'd have to agree with you, they want to create a buzz before showing this in the US.

    by bluetunehead

You can't honestly make those comparisons, can you? Sudden Death? Legionnaire?? Those were bargain bin crap movies. Legionnaire was direct-to-dvd in the US, if I'm not mistaken. Those are entirely different situations. You're talking about Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson here. Industry titans. Those guys are playing in an entirely different league. Releasing TinTin first internationally is more akin to releasing the James Bond movies first in England, which they have done in the past. It's about knowing your target market, not avoiding bad buzz.

Was that Spielberg's idea for JP4? I know John Sayles wrote the treatment or script or whatever was reviewed years ago. All I know is that idea is solid gold. What film geek wouldn't want to see an R-rated live action movie about intelligent, mutant, bionic dinosaur soldiers? Not a very good one, that's for sure.

    by thats_magic

Firstly, Tintin isn't going to be a trilogy but rather 2 movies, filmed in a Hitchcockian film noir style (so not just for kids...North By Northwest is the closest thing to a Tintin movie) Secondly, The Unicorn is the name of a sunken ship. Thirdly, Americans are fucking dumb.

Isn't that when The Hobbit is supposed to come out? Or has that been postponed until 2012?

Anyway, considering Peter Jackson is involved in both as a producer, he would have two major films coming out in the same month.

BTW, what about Spielberg's other projects like the Lincoln biopic? What's the status on that one?

I First Saw Tintin in the U.S....

    by jonas grumpy

...when I was 5 years old, reading serialized, black & white versions of his stories in a little magazine called "Children's Digest." That was in 1972. Asterix & Obelix was a short-lived daily newspaper comic strip not long after that.

I highly doubt that I was the only kid in the U.S. at that time reading that magazine or that paper's comic strips... so why does everyone in my age group claim ignorance of these characters? Even some comic book geeks I know couldn't tell you who those characters are.

As for the argument "This movie will bomb in the U.S. because nobody knows who Tintin is," that's a load of baloney and you all know it. Not every hit movie in this country was based on previously-existing material. Not even movies for kids. "Toy Story" is my #1 example. We didn't know who those characters were prior to seeing the film, now did we? (No, the presence of already-existing TOYS doesn't count. I doubt there was much clamor for tickets once word spread that Slinky Dog was on the big screen.)

Two animated movies on the same day. Guess which one will win the hearts of American audiences? The one featuring characters and stories known WORLD-WIDE for decades, or the one featuring brand-new, never-before-seen characters from a studio with a reputation for quality work? by subovon

As a long time TINTIN fan, it’s hard for me to imagine that anyone who loves INDIANA JONES could not know and love TINTIN. That’s kind of like being a fan of THE GODFATHER but not giving a damn about GOODFELLAS.

    Meet my friend TINTIN

    by subovon

For those interested in discovering TINTIN, here’s one fan’s
suggestion: Check out THE CRAB WITH THE GOLDEN CLAWS. Jackson ahs said they
were using some of this story to introduce Tintin to
Captain Haddock in the movie. Then read SECRET OF THE UNICORN but make sure you
also get your hands on RED RACKHAM'S
TREASURE which is the conclusion of the story begun in UNICORN.

Then I strongly suggest THE SEVEN CRYSTAL BALLS + THE TEMPLE
OF THE SUN. Two reasons: the story in those books is arguably the most “prototypical”
Hergé plot in the series and it’s an awesome
adventure by any standards. You’ll see where Spielberg and Lucas got ideas for INDIANA
JONES in the second part. For this reason alone, to see some of a major
inspiration for RAIDERS, I think fans should check these two books out pronto! Secondly,
I’m ready to bet an arm this is going to be the story they use in TINTIN 2. If
you like to jump into a story at its apex, this one will rock your socks off.
An Incan God haunts terrified collectors; high adventures in the mountain of
the Andes; ancient temples (a la RAIDERS), human sacrifices to the Sun God (a
la TEMPLE OF DOOM)… awesome stuff and gorgeous artwork.

    Disclaimer

    by subovon

BUT KEEP IN MIND THESE ARE OLD BOOKS! They were published
in the ‘40s and ’50 so you can’t expect something that will click with your
pop-cultured mind; especially if you were born after 1980. You need to go into
it like you’d go into the original IRON MAN or BATMAN books. And also keep in
mind that these are translated from French and it’s difficult to capture French
humor with English. The movie should be a much better adaptation of the
dialogue. The French speak in a very distinctively different way than Americans
and that’s going to play a big part in the way you perceive the writing.

Other favorite TINTIN books worth reading: THE CALCULUS
AFFAIR; THE RED SEA SHARKS; and my
favorite: FLIGHT 714 because of its sc-fi elements.
Note that these 3 albums are later works in the series and it pays off to know
the characters. But either one you choose from this post will give you a good
impression of the character and type of story he gets into.

    And...

    by subovon

    Lastly, you might
be interested in reading Destination Moon + Explorers on the Moon. Written 17
years before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, Herge’s
depiction of the first people on the moon (Tintin and
co) is insanely close to how it went down, conceptually. The only reason I
hesitate to suggest this story as an introduction is because MOON is rather
wordy and a long set-up for the all-action of EXPLORERS. On the other hand,
EXPLORERS may be the funnest story in the series. It’s
the most spectacular, that’s for sure.

    If you’re one of
the haters who doesn’t know TINTIN, see a proctologist and once you’ve gotten
your head back on your shoulders, feast your eyes on the stories that made
    Lucas anjd Speilberg want
to invent INDIANA JONES. Once you’ll find out what you’ve been missing, you’re
    going to be kicking yourself.

--I think--there was another called 'Humpty Dumpty Magazine' which was about the same thing. Sure that's right-we DID see Tintin there. I think TinTin is fine, as far's as it goes-for American audiences, it's NOT pre-sold any more than Asterix would be, say---it's a European thing. But am sure it could be a fun movie, and both SS and Sir Petey Jax should be able to do something creative and fun w/ it. It will however be a KID'S movie, by and large. It will be for the Narnia/Potter age group if that. I don't think it's made for the same group that likes Eli Roth or Watchmen or whatever. Could be fun. I'm glad Michael Bay has said he's 'Open to the possibility' of doing the third one---

    by subovon

Well said about it being a European thing. Much like Superheros are an American thing which does not play all that well in the rest of the world. But I think that TINTIN & co being human characters and very much an INDIANA JONES kind of thing, this film *will* have huge appeal in the US. Unless they get the look wrong, the story is there and the devil knows the talent is behind this adaptation. I'm guessing that they're going to get it right and it'll be a HUGE hit the world over. Then the sequel comes out and it'll have brand recognition making it a bona fide phenomenon. Mark my words, they're going to make 3 and then some more....

... and I'm a Brit. I don't think it's as much of a big deal as The Bearded Ones seem to think. Certainly not to my generation and younger. I vaguely recall the cartoon but it never seemed remotely Indy-like in tone or spirit or pace. I'm worried this'll misfire badly on Spielberg and Jackson. I don't see the audience for it as such and lots of people aren't sold on the whole motion capture deal, me included. People in general love the Pixar stuff of course, but I think the average movie-goer looks at the likes of Beowulf and just goes "what the fuck? Is it a cartoon or is it real or what? There were actors, THEN they painted over them? Why not just make a proper film then?"

    COMPLETE TOTAL DISASTER

    by thusspakespymunk

You can already tell that they know they've got a disaster - but they want to make this so bad it hurts. Never mind that they could spend a billion dollars trying to promote TINTIN in the United States and the best they'd get back in response is "Huh? Who? Man, I dunno." They could spend two billion - five billion - ten billion ... and not any of it would make Americans care. They could cure world hunger and disarm every atomic bomb and the price would be that people go to see TINTIN, and people in the USA would still shrug and say "Isn't that that gay dude with the white dog?" and someone else would say 'Nah, it's POPEYE's kid, I think."

I feel your pain. once it was easy to point fingers at americans and say "See? they are dumber then us, we are smarter". And we would all be very happy in our smugness. But that has ended now. Today, all teens from all over the world are inspired by Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Those are their incons, those are their inspirations, the type of "being" they aim to be. Teens today are all alike all over the world. It's complete homogenization. Nationality and culture is no longer a distintion anymore. They are all the same, and they all pray at the altar of dumb. Paris Hilton and all that she represents is their God, it0's what they aim for, it's what they aspire for, it's who they want to be. My generation was not the brithest there ever was, but this newest one if even worst. Maybe those fucking old geezers were into something. The only good thing i see in the newer genetation is that the geek stuff is far more acceptable today, and thee is no longer those strong lines of division between boys and girls tastes and stuff to enjoy. Now all, both boys and girls enjoy videogames. That's two things i wish had existed in my generation back in the day.

Give Tintin the benefit of the doubt

    by mysteroidseijin

Seriously, there are Americans who are aware of and enjoy the Tintin books. Heck, the only book in the series I don't have is The Castafiore Emerald. Every Barnes and Noble bookstore I shop at has Tintin books on the shelves. Done right, Tintin would make an excellent family film.

I didn't say Americans were stupid - I said the most stupid Scot would be smarter than the most stupid Yank. This statement does not indicate either that all Scottish people are intelligent or that all Yanks are stupid. You see the difference between you and I is that I am acutely aware of my countries failures and am happy to admit them. Whereas for you no mention is allowed that something American may be wrong. Guess what? Americans ARE ignorant of so many things. It's just a fact. They live in a bubble and have no knowledge or interest in the outside world. Other countries, like those say in Europe, are by design more outward looking and knowledgable of other countries because they interact with them on a daily basis. My point earlier stands: a stupid Scot might not be able to tell you the capital of America but he could point to it on a map. Is the reverse true?

and actually again being the knuckle dragging mongtard that you are you have spectacularly missed my point about a country founded on terrorism. Perhaps it is unfair of me to have expected you to have read a book - but YOUR country was founded by acts of terrorism. A violent insurgency rising up against your colonial master. Was the UK? No. Did it use tyranny and oppression to colonise the globe? Undoubtedly. But is its inception a result of violence? No. I bet you actually have no idea when the UK was formed so don't try and lecture me about being stupid. Wrap yourself in your star spangled dishrag and keep chanting.

    U-S-A! U-S-A! I AM SO SMART! S-M-R-T!

    One More Time, Cedar Room

    by rebeck2

This is my last response to you, because it really is a waste of time. You are so stuck in your way of thinking, you can't even admit that my responses have been intelligent and based in logic. When you're still calling me a knuckle-dragging illiterate "mongtard" (??), then you obviously have your Scottish head so far up your ass that you can't even argue with reason. You're in your own world. Which sort of betrays your great point about how advanced and evolved you are compared to Americans. It is not "just a fact" that Americans are more insular than Scots, that is by definition an opinion. There is no official measuring stick somewhere for that. You have an opinion, and I bet you haven't even been to the US. Or if you have, it's been like three days at Disneyworld. So you're getting this "informed" opinion of yours third-hand and of course only consuming the information that supports your bias. Oooh, you're a sociopolitical genius. Who the FUCK are YOU to judge an entire country - the most diverse and multi-ethnic country on the planet?? And what does America starting as an insurgency have to do with anything?? Yes, we were revolting against your imperial ass, so what?! Did I say I was for the Iraq War? Uhh, no. Am I part of the half of the country that never voted for it or for any Republican? Yes, so... What the fuck are you railing about? I'm a Liberal Democrat - do you even know what that means? Or in your ignorance do all Americans look alike to you? Have you been watching the news lately? You might have noticed a new guy with slightly darker skin... How does he fit into your Great Satan world view? Were we ignorant when we elected a leader of color, which you haven't done in the UK? Dude, you would make a flag-waving American out of a communist with the stupid things YOU say! Of course, my country has made mistakes, and the last eight years have been hell - but to say we're stupid when we have consistently created, innovated, developed and advanced in all the sciences and technologies and yes, even explored the "final frontier" more than anyone else (What could be more outward looking than that, you puffed-up little putz?)... Well, that makes you a stone-cold fucking idiot. Not to mention a total hypocrite because you wouldn't be on this site if you didn't eat up the entertainment that is our greatest export to the world. You are a bigger jingoistic dickhead than the redneck Americans you seem to be fixated on. Just because your country is small and quaint, doesn't mean you are superior and incapable of bigotry. And it DEFINITELY doesn't mean you're more intelligent - you have proven that without a doubt. Bottom line: Every time you generalize about Americans, you are showing only your own ignorance. Because if you had actually been to my country, you would know that you can barely even generalize about the state of California (LA vs. SF), let alone the whole nation. Look, if you hate us so much, you sad little prick, if you're so desperate to feel superior, then take a stand and stop using any of our products or watching any of our entertainment, and just stick to stuff made in the UK. Have the integrity of your ignorance; wear it proudly, mate. And us Americans we will have a good cry over it and then forget you ever existed and if we ever in fact gave a shit.

"well allow me to retort" (quote from an AMERICAN film *shock*)

    by cedar_room

    1. I'm not Scottish.
    2. I spent the first 3 months of this year living and working in New York.
    3. Mongtard is a portmanteau of mongoloid retard a.k.a. you.

You've made this into an argument it was never intended to be, but thats because you suffer the very generalisation syndrome you accuse me of. You think that voting in Obama reaffirms your status as the greatest goddam country in the world. Yes well done - you have cleaned up the massive shit you did on the floor and now you want a pat on the head. Well how about just not shitting on the floor in the first place?

In the UK we haven't elected a "leader of colour" - but neither have you voted in a leader of the female persuasion. We also have a much smaller percentage of non-whites in this country (around 8% compared with your 20%) and those we have we didn't legally discriminate against as late as the last 50 years. So yes, WELL DONE, you get a huge pat on the back for reaching the point the civilised west reached centuries ago.

so in summary I just ask you to admit it - the average American is ignorant of the outside world. Say it - it doesn't make your country any less worthy. Admitting your flaws allows you to address them. It also shows you are an adult.

    1. You sure argue a lot for a Non-Scot, and have a lot invested in their incredibly big brains. 2. I love the way you never respond to the main point of my posts because you know "Americans are stupid" - which is what started all of this and not the same as insular - is an indefensible position, and that knowing the capitol of Scotland (Istanbul, right?) is not the
universally accepted standard of intelligence. If you're saying that the US could fit the UK into my state of Colorado (can you find it on a map without looking at the names? Hint: It's one of the square ones.) and the US has four times the population, so therefore we forget to call sometimes or send you flowers, then yeah, I guess I'll cop to that. So far I haven't heard you say anything critical about your own little fucked-up bloodstained homeland. Maybe I missed that? Did I blink? And yes while we were here oppressing the black man, you were doing it in their homeland of Africa, and to the "savages" of India. You are so very civilized, you complete twat. Which brings me to 3. You spent three months in New York and you think all Americans are the same?? You must be that rarest form of idiot that even a lowly "Mongoloid Retard" (class, mate) would look down on. You don't have to take a massive shit on the floor, my friend, you ARE that massive shit.

    and just one final point

    by cedar_room

Just to show that I'm not the sort of person who forms his opinions by watching films, or TV shows, or other things which are "fictional" - but on real life experiences that I have had myself...

Over the past few years I've worked in several different countries for months at a time. I've worked in Jamaica, Bangladesh, Jordan (and soon South Africa) as well as the US. Without going into specifics, I deal with visas. People wishing to travel to Britain. In all the countries I've been in, and all the different nationalities I have encountered (and being in New York you deal with dozens of nationalities other than American) the one and only nationality which applied for a visa and yet forgot to send in their passport with their application...... were US citizens.

That's right - despite all the advice about what you should send, despite it being COMMON FUCKING SENSE, despite being mastered by third world nationals who had spent nary a day in school - it was Americans (and this was more than one or two EVERY DAY) did not send in their passport to get a visa. The ONLY nationality.

Now this is just my experience - perhaps the goat herders of Sudan are similarly intellectually challenged. Perhaps this is all a big conspiracy against The Greatest Nation On The Face Of The Earth. Or....perhaps...just perhaps...it's a sign that your average American is just a little bit more naiive, a little bit more ignorant, a tiny weency bit more stupid than your average other national and thus shows their true colours when put to the test.

This does not try and devalue the country as a whole, which has more than produced it's fair share of brilliant people to advance the common man. And yes, going to the moon was a bit of a larf (although I still maintain that television has been more useful an invention than velcro) but you must face facts and be less defensive Mr Rebeck. You can't be perfect at everything my American chum (*note* chum means friend).

The people in Britain are europeans, regardless if you like it or not (which is another matter entirely). listen, if the icelanders, which are far mroe isolated then you are inthe British Islands, have no probem identifying themselves as europeans, and they have a far more insular culture then the brts, then what's your problem? Listen, yes, the french are an irritating bunch, but they are not the whole of europe. And the 100 Years War ended a long time ago.As a Portuguese myself, i can sympathise a bit withy your position. as you mith well know, my country Portugal is also pretty isolated form the rest of manland Europe. We are that rectangle that exists at the southwest corner of the Peninsula Iberica. Being in an extreme of the a peninsula already makes us isolated form europe, that we only have land borders with Spain doubles that geographical isolation. and my people is quite mixed with people from north-africa, black africa, the east indies and asia. But that doesn't change the fact that we are europeans. Regardless if we like it or not. Beign called an european is the same way a japanese being called asian. He will not be less japanese for that. You are not going to be any less english for being called european. It's just a classification, that's all, no problem about it. We are europeans, that's it.

I can't understand why so many filmmakers are so inlove with it.There is this online movie reviewer called The Flick Filosopher, and she mocked the hell out of Mo-Cap in her review of Beowulf. She said there was already a Civil War technology that was great in capturing the actors' performances, it's called photography. And she's right. I cannot understand what's so fuckign great about Mo-Cap that photography cannot do, and do much better and much less expensively. Mo-Cap is technological masturbation, the same way i fear 3-D will be too.

Asimov lives, I know Britain's a part of Europe. That's why I said we aren't "especially European.

In other words, culturally we probably have far more in common than the U.S & Commonwealth countries than we do European countries, simply as a result of our own Anglo-Saxon culture being quite uniquely different to European cultures & the fact that we spread it to those other countries.

When people are talking about Herge (I don't know how to accent that) & saying Europeans like his stuff, that's a generalisation. If I'm a European, does that make me unusual in not giving a shit about Tintin? I care even less for Asterix.

If you’re gonna flame, do some research.
It’s fair to mention the context for the example you give. What you are talking

before WWII. In this country, Blacks were not allowed to drink out of the same water
fountain as white folk. Women didn’t have the right to vote, nor could they
even open a bank account and I mean white women included. And just like the Black
/ White fountains did not offend the people of 1930, those drawings of Africans
in Herge’s book didn’t offend his readers either.
They’re offensive today but knowing the context deflates your CAPITALIZED
    spasm.

This is no defense of the art you mentioned. That’s one
good reason not to read that book. Another is that it is terrible on every
level. Seriously, folks: if you’re going to take your first look at TINTIN, take
one of my suggestions above. Reading the earlier books won’t give an idea of
what Spielberg is going to do. TINTIN evolved a lot over the first stories and
it’s only about a third of the way into its timeline that the comic enters what
you’d consider it’s “canon,” where the characters are in place and the stories
have become their own thing, etc..
