Denzel & The Brothers Hughes Open Up Their Post Apocalyptic BOOK OF ELI!!

Published at:  May 27, 2009 7:45:14 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Albert and Allen Hughes (MENACE II SOCIETY, FROM HELL, DEAD PRESIDENTS) ae going post apocalyptic in THE BOOK OF ELI - in which Denzel Washington makes his way through a doomsday wasteland protecting a book that might hold the answers to humanity's salvation.

USA TODAY has a gallery of images from the film, which you can accewss by following Denzel below.

Whenever I think of post-apocalyptic, I'm instantly catapulted back to 1977's DAMNATION ALLEY - the first survivors-in-a-wasteland movie I ever saw, and the only one that made me cry. Having seen it more recently, I'm not sure what the hell kinda wussyfication befell me in that given moment - but I do remember developing a phobia of giant mutant scorpions, really wanting a Landmaster, fearing I'd awaken one day to find the sky looked like the background of an second rate rock concert, and yearning to do something with Dominique Sanda (even though I was too young to know what actual "doing" was).

    by fah-cue

Yeah... they've got a "great" track record of films. Right? This will be the "The Postman" in the post-apocalyptic hood. Sorry Denzel... your great talent may have been wasted.

    by terry1978

Every other role he's a cop pushed to the edge or some shit...this looks to be a nice little diversion from that. The man is a superb actor, but the roles he takes force him to act the same every time.

Hugh bros are at least unique filmmakers

    by subtlety

They've never quite had a home run, but they always embrace ambitious, unique films which are shot gorgeously. I'm glad they're still getting chances to make movies because once the stars align I bet they've got a classic in em. Denzel being just generally great helps, too. Hughes don't always seem to know how to keep their actors working in the same direction, but Denzel can do this shit in his sleep. Now they just have to get a film editor who won't sabotage their mastery of atmosphere.

    I have a question...

    by freakshowmonkey

Brother Merrick, I generally like your articles, but I have to question this one. The headline promises information on BOOK OF ELI, and while we do find two paragraphs on said film, there is a much longer discourse on DAMNNATION ALLEY, followed by the posting of the entire damn movie via (probably illegally recorded) youtube clips. It feels like an excuse to pimp one of your favorite old movies, rather than discuss an upcoming project.

Merrick's Guide To Posting An Online News Story:

    by brokentusk

    1. Spend the first paragraph imparting actual news, and possibly providing a link to another site with the ACTUAL scoop.

    2. Spend further paragraphs talking about a topic relating to the previous news in any way whatsoever. This could include films with similar themes, his child's reaction to the news, his favourite colour that might relate to the news, etc.

    3. Post as many YouTube links as possible in order to make it seem like actual work has been done.

    4. Don't spellcheck.

    5. Post that shit!

    Love you Merrick.

Always loved Damnation Alley as a title...

    by eustisclay

...even though the movie was a piece of shit, with a title like that I had to see it. would love to see a remake(not something I usually say), hell, I don't care if it has anything to do with the first one, just keep the title. Of course maybe the title was a preview of Jan-Michael Vincent's career.

I had never previously bothered watching 'Damnation Valley' before you posted those links.

And as for those folk criticising Merrick's posting of these links in regards to any questions of legality, what would you rather: no one see the film, because it's not been released on VCR since '85, or would you rather sit on your high horse of judgemental impotence?

    Anyhow, thanks Merrick.

    Everything Was Great, then...

    by bigeddiecalzone

I've had this script for six months. It was number one on my must see list for the year and the script is like greased lightning. The business about the book is huge and right away I knew what kind of man Eli had to be. Eli had to be tough, no-nonsense, and contain a single-minded, spiritual side to him. And then I heard about the casting and Denzel and my heart sank.

I for one am glad he posted the pictures. It looks incredible and I think it'll help the story. I just hope I'm wrong about Denzel. He seems tragically miscast for this part.

the apocalypse can't be that bad

    by cherryvalance

It's got walking sticks and Gary Oldman. I really want Denzel to not look like Denzel in one movie. I mean if characters were real people you wouldn't find that many people that looked exactly like Denzel Washington, same hair and everything. Maybe other people think that's not a part of acting but I do.

Damnation Alley made me cry too but that was because I realized I was actually dumb enough to sit there and watch it.
