LAND OF THE LOST!! SPIDER-MAN!! SIMPSONS!! CHEERS!! 24!! DEXTER!! SEXY MONEY!! HercVault!!

Published at:  May 27, 2009 12:34:15 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

From a 2003 AICN chat:

HERC: What Saturday morning cartoon shook your world?
JANE ESPENSON: I liked all the cartoons, but I have a special fondness for the live-action LAND OF THE LOST. They were on this routine expedition and they met the greatest earthquake ever known, you see...

Keep your acid-washed “H.R. PufnStuf,” your “Sigmund and the Seamonsters,” your “Bugaloos,” your “Lidsville,” your “Lost Saucer.”

The apex, the pinnacle, the prized gem of the Sid & Marty Krofft legacy is “Land of the Lost,” which ran on NBC between 1974 and 1977.

It was a Saturday-morning science fiction saga about a family on a rafting adventure – dad Rick Mashall, son Will and daughter Holly – that gets sucked through a mysterious portal onto a mysterious planet inhabited by mysterious dinosaurs, proto-humans, hissing lizard-men (the Sleestak!) and Christ remembers what else. There was this Pylon that allowed journeys to still other worlds, and a semi-visible glittery being fond of experiments, and a time-lost brown Sleestack named Enik (who apparently makes an appearance in the new Will Ferrell movie as well).

In a lot of ways “Land of the Lost” manages to delve into mysteries of its protagonists’ new environment rather more gracefully than the new grown-up Locke-Hurley-Sayid “Lost” still unfolding on ABC. And in a lot of ways it doesn’t.

The series’ players provide some of the saddest acting ever to visit a kids’ show, and the ambitious (for the era) effects work reeked of fake, but the first season of “Land of the Lost” had to have benefited mightily from writing contributed by major-league sci-fi novelists like Ben Bova and Larry Niven, to say nothing of “Star Trek” vets Margaret Armen, D.C. Fontana, David Gerrold and Norman Spinrad. Even the second season featured an episode by Theodore Sturgeon.

The big names pretty much vanished with the third season, as did the actor who played Rick. Rick vanished into another dimension, and the kids’ Uncle Jack conveniently arrived to defend them during the third season against Grumpy the T-Rex and other manifestations of the uncanny. On the upside, the third season introduced Richard Kiel as the giant caveman “god” who turned the mighty Sleestak into his bitches.

At $41.99, the new complete-series set is considerably cheaper than used copies of the (now discontinued) DVD sets issued earlier this decade, but it’s missing the 17 creator and cast commentaries (including those by Niven, Fontana and Gerrold) and other extras available on the earlier sets. The new set does contain a preview of Will Ferrell’s “Land of the Lost” movie not available on the earlier sets, though I can’t imagine you won’t be able to find the same preview online somewhere for free if you look hard enough.

The limited edition comes in what looks like an authentic 1970s metal lunchbox.

I adore “Designing Women” when it aired on CBS in the late 1980s and I love and adore it now. Were it airing on CBS today it would be my favorite scripted show on CBS. It is the show “Sex and the City” wanted to be, a realistic and funny portrayal of four devoted co-workers who put their friendship above all else. It carried an intelligent irreverence and a caliber wit one encounters so rarely in television. Annie Potts, who made the series between the “Ghostbusters” movies, was hot stuff, and Jean Smart (first lady Martha Logan on “24”!) and Delta Burke (skinny all during season one) weren’t too hard to look at either. How did it take till the Blu-ray era to issue this series on DVD?

The new first season set features as an extra 43 minutes of the Oct. 25, 2006 reunion sponsored by the Museum of Television and Radio. Learn that creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason’s pitch to the network was highly nebulous, essentially the tale of four friends who would be played by actresses she’d worked with on two failed series (“Filthy Rich” and “Lime Street”). Learn that both Potts and Bloodworth-Thomason cried during the MTR’s screening of the pilot. Learn that a CBS exec suggested the central business be a design firm. Learn that Bloodworth-Thomason learned “Designing Women” was going to series on the same day she learned her mother had AIDS. Learn that Bloodworth-Thomason’s scripts were often so big that episode footage had to be overcranked to fit the 22-minute timeslots. Learn that Dixie Carter, whose character was often assigned left-wing speeches, was a Republican when she joined the show. Learn that the only Emmy the show ever won was for hairdressing. Learn that the women were based on Bloodworth-Thomason male country-lawyer relatives. Learn that until “Sex and the City” hit HBO, drag queens would routinely dress as Mary Jo, Charlene, Julia and Suzanne in West Hollywood, Calif.’s gay pride parades.

. . . the Land of the Lost marathon on sci-fi this weekend? I watched this show every time it was on as a kid. Still was amazed how BAD it is. My wife and I were laughing hard. Also just confirmed on IMDB that NBA great, Bill Lambier, played a Sleestak. F'in' awesome!!!

I did indeed check out the Sci-Fi Channel marathon yesterday. Didn't quite make it through the first season's worth of episodes, but DVR'd them all! As long as Herc was noting the Star Trek writers from S1, I noticed the second or third episode's writer was Walter Koenig. Would that be the same WK who played Chekov in ST?

    by big jim

turns to Halloween costumes. Anthony had a story from his childhood where, because they could not afford to buy him a costume, he would wear his grandfather's suit and go out every year as a business man. After a few years he wanted to go out as something different so he poured ketchup over his head and went out as a dead businessman.Dirty Sexy Money, the complete (and final) second season: Does this contain episodes not aired? Is there some completion to the two seasons that allows them to use the word "complete"? Or do they mean complete as in "that's all there is, there ain't no more"? It is possible there was some completion to the series when it aired but it was so long ago I can't quite recall. If there are some unaired episodes will ABC be airing them, like they are with Pushing Daisies? Speaking of Daisies, when are those being aired? I forgot to mark my calendar. Is ABC also airing the remaining Eli Stone episodes too? I have many questions it seems, but I am confident you all have the answers.

    Yes The Monster Squad

    by freerangecelt

It was a very bad show, but when you are 8 years old, you just don't notice these things, and that is Gopher from 'The Love Boat'. No connection to the 1987 movie. The monsters would fight crime. As for Land of the Lost, watched most of the first season yesterday on SciFi, and it was a pleasant walk down memory lane, but I remember preferring Ark II, Shazam and Isis over the show. More action :)

    by freerangecelt

He was doing alot of writing at that time, and had scripts for the animated Star Trek as well, as Chekov was absent from TAS. On LOTL there was even a backstory character named Chekov, who gave the Sleestaks their name!

    by danielkurland

I don't know why, but I dug the hell out of this show, especially in the second season. By the end of an episode, like 8 different crucial character points would be changed. The very fact that the show was about this man trying to balance the Darlings and his own family life, but in the end he FAILS. He leaves his wife. I was pretty impressed by this sort of change being made. I know a lot of people hated or didn't care about this show, but did anyone else just enjoy it as extremely fun television?

    Spectacular Spider-Man

    by iforgotabout19

Is actually really excellent Spider-Man. If you can get past the childish animation (which basically becomes irrelevant whenever he puts on the mask) and give it a few episodes to see how the stories develop (they really progress excellently). Amazing fights, pretty great character development, and really fine villains and voice acting. It's no Justice League or Batman TAS, but as far as Spider-Man goes, its exceptionally better than any of the movies or series' that have come before it.

Daisies starts this Saturday on ABC. After they burn off the final 3 it will be replaced by Eli Stone and after they burn off the last few of that Dirty Sexy Money will take over the slot.It could be DSM before Eli Stone, but at the end of the day all 3 shows are sharing a Saturday time slot for the Summer to burn off the remaining episodes.

    Grumpy died when Rick left

    by rob0729

Grumpy was killed in the earthquake that was caused when Rick left. It was replaced by a nearsighted two-headed dragon that wouldn't leave the lagoon nor really pose that much of a threat called Lulu. I guess they decided to kill off Grumpy when they did away with the cave set which it used to terrorize. It really kinda made a corny show even cornier since Lulu was a ridiculous monster and was cheezily fake even by Sid and Marty Kroft's standards.
