The Wily Swedes Have Footage From Terry Gilliam’s IMAGINARIUM!!
I am – Hercules!!
AICN headgeek Harry Knowles says “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” may represent Terry Gilliam’s finest feature work to date.
While the footage below looks pretty swell, it does not convince me that the new film will surpass the deathless, transcendent bliss that was “Monty Python and The Holy Grail.”
As with the “Basterds” clip I posted earlier this week, the introduction is in Swedish, but English-language footage awaits the patient.

Just asking because of your use "klicken sie hier". Which is German.

Probably thinks Sverige's the land of cuckoo clocks too...
-
= greatest movie ever made.
-
some of the reviews from Cannes suggest this one is not as good as the older titles. However, I for one couldn't give a shite what the reviewers think of a Gilliam piece.
-
But it looks like it was shot on cheap digital with shitty lighting. I'm skeptical any movie that looks that ugly can compete with gorgeous movies like Brazil & Fear & Loathing,,,
-
seriously...fuck...yes.I think im gonna need to change my pants now.
-
i wonder if people are ever gonna get off the jock of the holy grail...just wondering.
-
Gilliam unleashed. There should be a movie based on him.
I've not seen much of Gilliam. 12 Monkeys was great, and Munchausen (?) but I have seen his Python work. The man really does have the potential to make a classic, and I hope this is it. -
thats all
-
man im losing it
-
It's been awhile since I've enjoyed his whimsical vision, namely "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen," though I admire his other works too (Time Bandit, Brazil, 12 Monkeys.)
-
Ich bin gettin nein videofotag.
-
but this film feels important to me. it's like i have a responsability to see it.
-
Still Cool though

is awesome

Makes the Joker look that much more fucking brilliant

the Terry Gilliam film I've been waiting for since The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Loved his more mainstream stuff since then, and even Tideland had it's moments, but I am SERIOUSLY hoping this is what it feels like it could be.
-
pass.
-
He's only really made one bad movie, The Brothers Grimm. Time Bandits, Brazil, Fisher King, 12 Monkeys, and Fear and Loathing are all fucking great. His Python works are great too. I feel skeptical, but why should I be?
-
I'm sorry it just sucked. It was boring and dumb. Everything else is great though. Just watch Brazil for the first time not too long ago, its so nuts and I love that fucking song as well.
-
Watch "Brazil"
-
I did not know german and swedish sounded so alike ;-P
-
Oh... To late... AICN jumps the shark again...
-
i think, the "Klicken Sie Hier" - Button is created by some european or even german mirror-server, i guess it is not readable for us-approachers... or isit? we even have different commercial-units on our sideboards... harry ones sad that.
-
i´m so excited abaout this movie... yippidiyeehaaa.... a new gilliam film hits the screen... i-am-ex-cited....!!!
-
He could release a maggot-infested log of shit with his name stamped on it and it would still be better than 99% of films out there. I think I've made my position clear.
-
xcuse me but... fear an loathing should be praised... just watch it again and find out, that this is the truth...
but i agree with "brazil" -
Film looks interesting, Gilliam is a true creative great; I'm there!
-
Damn You Michael Bay
-
But, come on, can Gilliam really make a coherent film ? OK, 12 Monkeys gets a pass, he didn't write it. And Brazil I loved even though it was wildly indulgent and Universal might have been right in trying to save something from what was fated to be a disaster.

virtually everything they have posted lately has been up on other sites for days, sometimes weeks before it makes it here. nukethefridge, twitch, latino review, etc. all have more current information and broader variety of stories. i only wish they had the traffic this site manages. this is why i encourage people to check out these other sites.

like this kong molesting harry thing they have running. wtf?
-
...(and I do like his work, I think) I always end up saying "Huh! Do I really like it, or am I supposed to like it?"
-
...(and I do like his work, I think) I always end up saying "Huh! Do I really like it, or am I supposed to like it?"First one was written very poorly...shifted the viewpoint.
-
And I mean that in the best possible way. And I won't trust Harry's judgment, but I definitely will go see this. Like my dear pappy used to say, never trust a man who hasn't seen his willy in decades.
-
Go watch "Brazil" pronto!
This already looks better than the Brothers Grimm, so I'm definitely cautiously optimistic. -
Apart from the shot of the guy on the horse this is material we already saw more than a week ago in the cannes opening montage. it's nice you guys at least try to make better on your total fuckup of not covering cannes in the slightest, but please try a little harder...
-
That's the only pic that's getting reviews, Harry even put up a post stating when the fukcing film was first showed for christ sake.
-
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa -
Uh yeah, all of his movies are cult classics. Not one breakout it. Only nerds go see his movies. What a great track record.
-
That was largely Terry Jones...the other Pythons became increasingly disgruntled with Gilliam's directing style and began to rely more and more on Jones as the filming wore on.
-
Gilliam is a fantastic filmmaker. Fear & Loathing is among my favorite films, as is 12 Monkeys and the seemingly now-neglected The Fisher King.
-
is that his daughter or his girlfriend or just the chick from the movie? she looks smoking hot though
-
He's been running on the same idea for God knows how long. Ridley Scott has better movies than these two assholes.
-
He had vision and artistic sense, but the brits wrote the jokes. GRAIL doesn't count for a gilliam movie.
-
They're Norwegian, Mac.
-
but LOCKES is an assclown. some films demand repeat viewings. of course, if you have the mind of a child, you just aren't going to 'get' a lot of things...
-
Did it get better after the second half?I got so bored during that movie I didn't bother finishing it.Love alot of his other stuff.I even saw baron munchausen in a almost empty theater when I was a kid.
-
I've gotta agree. I've been waiting decades for Gilliam to knock it out of the park with a show like BRAZIL again, but all you're really guaranteed with his movies is a lot of quirkiness (sometimes straining the patience to its limits) and expensive sets.
Not surprised at all that Cannes went "Meh". -
did anybody realize, that there are two more clips out of that movie on the same website by now?
-
In a sense I think he is the Doctor, taking you on flights of imagination in every film he makes. From what I've been seeing, this is going to be his most amazing film ever and I can't wait to see it.
Sadly however, it doesn't yet have a distributor for North and South America, so we may never see it. Somehow the buyers at Cannes saw fit to ignore it. I just don't really get it. So many of us are looking forward to this film, but they don't think it will do well in the theaters. WTF? How's that for a spit in the eye? Guess they think if its not a remake, reboot or sequel we won't throw money at it or we're all just that stupid we need two and a half hours of mind mush to entertain us.
If you love Terry Gilliam's films and look forward to Heath Ledger's performance, take a peek at this: http://tinyurl.com/r8bvrx Terry and Heath's baby needs all the love it can get right now. -
Brothers Grimm wasn't his fault. the film we saw and what he shot were two different things. the Weinsteins chopped that film to bits with their bare hands before its release. That's why it took over a year to get it into theaters, well after Brokeback instead of before, which also added a few dings as well.
-
The movie got released when it did for two reasons. First, the CGI to create the destruction of the Mirror Queen did not yet exist. Someone had to write a program that would make her face crack like a mirror. It had never been done before. Once again Terry's imagination was ahead of its time. And secondly, because Bob Weinstein wouldn't know a good movie if it bit him on the arse! At the films first test screening it got all A's from the viewers, but Terry was told that a lot of things would have to be changed before it was going to be called a good movie. As a result scenes were cut, large amounts of the script were rewritten and scenes re-shot. Only the people in the theater that first day have ever really seen the Grimm movie as it was meant to be seen. Sadly it was a Bob Weinstein/Miramax film, not a Terry Gilliam film.
Quote from Terry after the third re-shoot and screening: "When they came to see it last week and they were very abrupt with what they saw, they didn't even see the whole movie. "It doesn't work, it's broken and it needs fixing." And they're very good at turning it into nothing." He basically walked away at that point and let them finish the film. -
FOR SURE.

I agree with you 100%. It used to be that if you met the director of a movie that totally sucked, you would say something tactful like, 'the sets were AMAZING!' But with Gilliam and Burton, that genuinely is the best thing you can say about 90% of their output. Good art design is what Del Toro did with Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy 2, and what Cuaron did with Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men - freaking AMAZING set design but it's just one part of a film, and certainly no more important than the story, the script, the casting, the performances, the editing etc etc.
