The Wily Swedes Have Footage From Terry Gilliam’s IMAGINARIUM!!

Published at:  May 23, 2009 10:42:55 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

AICN headgeek Harry Knowles says “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” may represent Terry Gilliam’s finest feature work to date.

While the footage below looks pretty swell, it does not convince me that the new film will surpass the deathless, transcendent bliss that was “Monty Python and The Holy Grail.”

As with the “Basterds” clip I posted earlier this week, the introduction is in Swedish, but English-language footage awaits the patient.

some of the reviews from Cannes suggest this one is not as good as the older titles. However, I for one couldn't give a shite what the reviewers think of a Gilliam piece.

Gilliam unleashed. There should be a movie based on him.
I've not seen much of Gilliam. 12 Monkeys was great, and Munchausen (?) but I have seen his Python work. The man really does have the potential to make a classic, and I hope this is it.

But, come on, can Gilliam really make a coherent film ? OK, 12 Monkeys gets a pass, he didn't write it. And Brazil I loved even though it was wildly indulgent and Universal might have been right in trying to save something from what was fated to be a disaster.

Gilliam is not responsible for Holy Grail's awesomeness

That was largely Terry Jones...the other Pythons became increasingly disgruntled with Gilliam's directing style and began to rely more and more on Jones as the filming wore on.

I've gotta agree. I've been waiting decades for Gilliam to knock it out of the park with a show like BRAZIL again, but all you're really guaranteed with his movies is a lot of quirkiness (sometimes straining the patience to its limits) and expensive sets.
Not surprised at all that Cannes went "Meh".

    Gilliam is Parnassus!

    by snowy0122

In a sense I think he is the Doctor, taking you on flights of imagination in every film he makes. From what I've been seeing, this is going to be his most amazing film ever and I can't wait to see it.

Sadly however, it doesn't yet have a distributor for North and South America, so we may never see it. Somehow the buyers at Cannes saw fit to ignore it. I just don't really get it. So many of us are looking forward to this film, but they don't think it will do well in the theaters. WTF? How's that for a spit in the eye? Guess they think if its not a remake, reboot or sequel we won't throw money at it or we're all just that stupid we need two and a half hours of mind mush to entertain us.

If you love Terry Gilliam's films and look forward to Heath Ledger's performance, take a peek at this: http://tinyurl.com/r8bvrx Terry and Heath's baby needs all the love it can get right now.

Brothers Grimm wasn't his fault. the film we saw and what he shot were two different things. the Weinsteins chopped that film to bits with their bare hands before its release. That's why it took over a year to get it into theaters, well after Brokeback instead of before, which also added a few dings as well.

    AsimovLives

    by snowy0122

The movie got released when it did for two reasons. First, the CGI to create the destruction of the Mirror Queen did not yet exist. Someone had to write a program that would make her face crack like a mirror. It had never been done before. Once again Terry's imagination was ahead of its time. And secondly, because Bob Weinstein wouldn't know a good movie if it bit him on the arse! At the films first test screening it got all A's from the viewers, but Terry was told that a lot of things would have to be changed before it was going to be called a good movie. As a result scenes were cut, large amounts of the script were rewritten and scenes re-shot. Only the people in the theater that first day have ever really seen the Grimm movie as it was meant to be seen. Sadly it was a Bob Weinstein/Miramax film, not a Terry Gilliam film.
Quote from Terry after the third re-shoot and screening: "When they came to see it last week and they were very abrupt with what they saw, they didn't even see the whole movie. "It doesn't work, it's broken and it needs fixing." And they're very good at turning it into nothing." He basically walked away at that point and let them finish the film.

I agree with you 100%. It used to be that if you met the director of a movie that totally sucked, you would say something tactful like, 'the sets were AMAZING!' But with Gilliam and Burton, that genuinely is the best thing you can say about 90% of their output. Good art design is what Del Toro did with Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy 2, and what Cuaron did with Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men - freaking AMAZING set design but it's just one part of a film, and certainly no more important than the story, the script, the casting, the performances, the editing etc etc.
