M. Night's THE LAST AIRBENDER releases its first pics! Plus a spy shot of one of the sets!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Yahoo has scored an exclusive pair of pics from M. Night Shyamalan's adaptation of the popular anime AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER, retitled The Last Airbender for some odd reason that I'm sure has nothing to do with with James Cameron.
On top of the pics from Yahoo (click each pic to visit the original story) I've also included one of our own, sent from a spy who infiltrated the shooting.
I only have a base idea of what this show is, having seen a few episodes courtesy of my buddy Kraken who is falling in love with the series. In the few episodes, following a little kung fu master who supposedly is the only being that can master all the different types of mystical kung fuey magic in this world, I can certainly see a real big, fun movie adapted out of the material. I'll probably sit down and blow through these over a weekend.
Anyway, here are the pics. The two of the cast are the official releases and the last, obviously, is our spy pic of a set.

Other than Dev Patel not having the right haircut or being nearly scarred up enough (although it is supposed to be the other side of the face, right?), I think it looks pretty dead on to the toon. What do you folks think?

All I can say is this guy could use a recovery (but so can John Carpenter)...

Two picks make it look neat, but until I see more, I will not know. Characters look cool though.

The remarkable director that was M. Night seems to be headed backward in his career. This leaves me nervous for this childrens TV show adaptation.

So I will wait and see how this plays out. They did give Zuko the infamous scarring, so that's one point.

M.Night blows.

there it is
-
M. Night has few of the qualities the show has: Imagination, play, and fun. He should've stopped after "The Sixth Sense"; just ask Ronald Bass. You can't fake the same orgasam the rest of your career.

At least Kung Fu Panda stuck to its roots, and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. M. Night...I got nothing good to say.

but I'm sure you guys will find SOMETHING else to bitch and moan about.

Funny how some folks bitch about people bitching...

Just like all other "films" that Shala has vomited out so far, starting with that trash "The Ghost of Bruce Willis".

There is no indication that Aang is an Asian kid. It is an American show. Granted, it is an American show mimicking japanese style, but that doesn't mean that Aang is Asian. Even if other characters are Asian, it doesn't mean Aang has to be, because they are all from different nations.

Reminds me of Warriors of Virtue for some reason.

The TV series is an Asian-themed experiment, much like the movie Kung Fu Panda. There's no indication that he's white.

Well, according to the series creator, not M.Night mind you. The world of Avatar has a perfect mixture of people. Mind you the reason why Ang has blue eyes, even the fire empire are a mixture even if mostly they draw from the Japanese. Oh and the prince has long that hair on the second season and flashbacks and the movie itself is based on the second season of the series.

First Skins - a groundbreaking british show never covered once to my knowledge on this site (no magic wands or aliens or super heroes, so what would be the point?) and the (frankly overrated but still fun) slumdog millionaire and now it's all about to be derailed by another pile of shit courtesy hollywood's most overrated director. Looks like the golden child meets crouching tiger on their way to a shit eating contest.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Eisner's Tornante Co. has hired upcoming screenwriter Mark Hammer to pen a feature adaptation of Bazooka Joe.

need to see more pictures of the kid though.
-
dont know why they had to change the design of the clothes-probably just to justify the salary of the wardrobe people. Other than thay i dont know why people are bitching, its not like Night cant direct, as long as he doesnt mess up the script.
-
is that in the last thirty seconds it's revealed that the film is actually Hong Kong Phooey: The Motion Picture and all the characters are really ghosts of cartoon dogs with Scatman Cruthers' voice.
-
The only thing he can do to win me over at this point is Unbreakable 2.
-
Why should they be cast as Asian? You want Asian. Draw them that way FIRST and then maybe Hollywood will follow suit.
-
M Night is an extremely talented director, its just that he makes insanely shitty movies because his ego is too big to let him not write the script. He bought into his own genius. As much as I fucking HATE The Village and Lady In The Water, I can't deny that some of the shots and style is extremely interesting, its just the stories and twists as a whole that fail so miserably. I think he can create atmosphere like no ones business. I didn't see The Happening, but I imagine its about the same problem. I'm not going to see this silly movie either, but I still firmly believe if he would direct a movie based on a script he didn't write, it could be fucking awesome. He needs to get over his own cleverness (or lack thereof lately) and just tell a straightforward story, IMO
-
...lots of cool shit going on, and Night will be back in all of our good graces very soon. I love the dude!
-
he has no talent, but has made a career out of Twilight Zone reject scripts.
-
When the movie is done, people come to the shocking conclusion that this is the 4th straight M Night Shama-lama-ding-dong movie they wasted time downloading illegally...yep, not one of you idiots are dumb enough to actually waste money on his movies...are you?
-
people are bitching because when the guy does direct (and frequently, he doesn't) he invariably fucks up the script. Lady in the Water really is one of the worst movies ever made - mindless, cringe inducing garbage. the happening was so boring it was as though he was challenging the audience not to get up and walk out.
i like dev patel, as i've mentioned, but he should never have gone near this. it looks like utter crap. -
Give the guy a fucking break. Spielberg and Scorsese have more crappy films under their belts than Shyamalan. The guy made two bad movies. Its not the end of the world.

That this particular "Avatar" will NOT be fucking our eyeballs in 2010?

than this. They lost me with the casting. Middle Eastern and Indian actors for the fire nation? Some white kids as the heroes. And these pics look like Dragonball cheap. The show was already pretty cinematic, I'd rather have seen that production with more money than this movie.
-
HOW THE FUCK IS IT not a big deal. Are asians suppose have slit eyes you stupid fucks! TAKE A FUCKING ART CLASS. SO HOW MANY fucking white people do you know with eyes four times the size of normal? So they have to be proven ASian even though the shows creators say it's an ASIAN FANTASY WORLD. IF So why is LOTR all white? Tolkien never said they were suppose to be white? IF i draw a circle with two dots for eyes and a circle for a mouth is he suppose to be white cause he has dots not slits for eyes? Theyr're called racial markers your fucks. Anime to ASIANS LOOK ASIAN cause we don't draw slits for eyes when drawing people of our own race you dumb fucks. I had hoped this website and this crowd was somewhat enlightened and educated but I guess not. I've been coming to this site for ten years and I have seen it degenerate into a bunch of fucking moronic children who don't know shit about culture, history, or anything outside of their little box. So D.VADER how the fuck is an ASIAN suppose to look like. I have met Asians with pale skin and very large eyes. you know what LOTR doesn't take place in FUCKING EUROPE! how would Chow yun fat as ARragorn sound to you. BRUCE LEE lost the role of Cain to David Carradine over thirty years ago, how the FUCK HAS ANYTHING CHANGED. HOllywood still likes to have Caucasians in make up and dress to look Asian. THIs is a FUCKING Joke! I thought I had more respect for the people who run this website. HARRY is fucking married to an ASian for Christ's sake. How many times is this gonna happen before you realize its BS. Dragonball, 21, or FUCKING BRIAN DENNEHY has kubla kahn a few years ago.
-
He's definitely not white. Whatever the fuck he is...he isn't one of us.

Dude, I'm sorry, but your taste really is in your ass. Someone could put a shit sandwich in front of you and you would "reserve judgement" until you had it half eaten. It looks like Cirque de Soleil for children - very slow children. Like I could see Sarah Palin's kids possibly enjoying this.

Baby Aang.
We can debate the quality and quantity of Aang's Asian-ness all we want, but bottom line is the aesthetic and style of the show is Oriental all over, like white on rice...forgive me.
It's part of the beauty and appeal of the whole series.
It's just a little weird to cast that out of the live action version. It'd be just like casting an all Asian LOTR. It might be a neat stunt, but WHY do it?!
I don't see the sense in that. It just seems like Hollywood effin things up by the usual committee of clueless hacks. -
because he finally got an Indian popular enough with American audiences to possibly open a movie. That and the guy who plays Kumar turned this shit down when he saw the costume he'd have to wear.
-
... Because, in all the episodes I've watched, Ang is pretty much the only one who does not look Asian. Everyone else pretty much does. But him? Not so much. Blame the American creators for having him above all others look different.
-
I mentioned this on another talkback as well - that animation is not only NSFW, it is disturbing. This is a window into Harry's fantasy life; having his man boobs fondled by a giant ape. Isn't he married? If I had a site and I put something like that up, I'm pretty sure my wife would have some questions; or just pack her bags.
-
the cartoon Ang never looks that serious...
-
It kind of gives the impression he's got some Asian-ness going on. If the races were reversed and they were definitely white characters being turned black or latino or asian, the outcry would be ongoing.
-
Looks nothing like that, my first big disappointment. They could have easily made it work even if the guy didn't look like him at all (Patel). how could they leave out the haircut and scar? It's a freakin trademark. Are they out of latex?
-

If you say the kid in the Airbender cartoon is Asian, then I say the kid in the picture is Asian. I mean, he matches the description of the cartoon character, right? Light pink skin, round eyes, a small nose, mouth, and a bald head. Check, check, check, check and check. I don't see what your problem is. The kid looks precisely as Asian as the cartoon character does.
-
I got a post it reseved for Harry's animation(don't want the kid's asking questions) also, I'm pretty sure Kumars' the fire lord. Believe it.
-
...if you take 'anime' to mean an animated show produced in Japan. Then again, most 'Japanimation' isn't made in Japan any more either.
It's a really great show, however, but very easy to fuck up in the wrong hands. Luckily for us, it's being made by the guy who did Lady in the Water and The Happening. -

Thank you, Sokitome! D. Vader claims to seen the show..
by hollywoodhellraiser
but his lack of knowing the simplest things about it proves he's a lying douchebag!Of course white folks are going to see anime characters white because they want to see themselves, even when the show is overwhelmingly Asian!
-
That would be your perception. I don't think the kid looks Asian at all to me. I think trying to match a highly stylized cartoon is a matter of subjective opinion. I think the kid from TRopic Thunder looks more like aang. He has round eyes, small nose, and a bald head but is Asian! or rather East Asian. I don't know many white kids in any country named Aang? I know some Asian ones. How many shaolin monks have white children learning martial arts from them. How many white saviour children in tibet are there? The airbenders were modeled after the shaolin monks. What can I say you think he looks like Aang but yet I could find a shitload of Asian that look like Arragorn, Legolas, Batman, Superman, spiderman, or even Jesus Christ but you'll never see them in those roles.... and no Dean Cain doesn't count considering he is MOSTLY caucasian and was a shitty superman anyway.
-
It's no secret that Japan has had an obsession with western culture and Americanization for decades. Just because that love has faded and sobered up in recent years, let's not pretend it never existed, shall we? After all, you guys are all wearing blue jeans and business suits over there now, aren't you? Selling all of your kooky snack food using white celebrities. When was the last time we paid millions of bucks to get a Japanese celebrity to plug Oreos? Right, never. And how often do the Japanese pay a white celebrity millions of bucks to plug their stuff? Oh yeah, every day for the past 20 years. You're simply in denial regarding white influence on Japanese culture.
-
that looks like the most rediculous shit ive ever seen in my 30 years on the planet.Seriously gay shit...seriously
-
Like I said dude. Most of the people who come to this site now are children who can't think outside their little fucking boxes and don't know shit about the world or different cultures.
-
"Someone could put a shit sandwich in front of you and you would "reserve judgement" until you had it half eaten."BEST POST OF THE DAY! lol
-
so what the fuck does white celebrities plugging shit in Japan have to do with this. I'm talking about Asian Americans. I don't give a fuck what happens in their culture I'm talking about Asians here. Many Americans, not all, do not see Asians as Americans. They say shit like Avatar was made by Americans for Americans. Fucking ASIANS are Americans. So tell how do you think it got that way in japan. Let me give you a history lesson. AFter wwII Japan was virtually swamped with U.S. occupation and ideals. The U.S. basically controlled large aspects of their society. I'm not saying the U.S. abused them I'm saying they had a large influence in their culture. Look at China, they're not obsessed with western culture. What goes on in one Asian country is not indicative of the rest. WE ARE NOT ALL ALIKE! BUT this is all moot. How does whatever you said justify placing Caucasians in roles of Asian characters?
-
I'm just askin'
-
WTF I am not Japanese. So why say "you guys" what the fuck does that mean? I argue for ASians so you assume I'm not an Asian AMERICAN? YOu're proving my point that most americans don't see us as Americans, so you lump me in with the Japanese.
-
in recent times has been more in writing than directing. So, am not jumping on hate bandwagon till I've seen the movie.
On the pics, I think Ang pic works. Race, costume et al are nitpickings, the pic seems to capture the mood nicely. Same goes for Patel. -
Everyone knows air should be straight.
-
Look it up- did I ever say Aang looked white? What's that? No, you say? Wow, you're right! All I said was that he didn't look that Asian. Good lord, were you one of those people bitching about the Daredevil movie when they made the Kingpin black?

-
That movie was hot camel shit! Even Paul, in full retard mode, couldn't save it!
-
I'm truly beginning to believe that. When the cast was first announced I expected more non Asians to be upset. IF this show had been based on AFrican mythology they wouldn't dare put white kids in that. They tried it with Neil Gaiman's Anansi, and then he told them to FUCK OFF until he got full control.
-
I hate to LOL you like this bud, but the westernization trend began way before WWII. It began in the late 1800s when trade opened up with Japan, Japan reformed heavily with an emphasis on westernizing themselves to 'catch up' and gain the respect of the industrialized world. And dude I don't care if you're American or not, I'm not an American. I'm Canadian, but racially I'm Scottish. It's not like I'm no longer a Scottish person just because I adopted a superficial label associated with another country. My nationality is Canadian. My race is Caucasian, specifically Scottish. And the justification of placing Caucasians in Asian roles, is this: If it's ok for Asians to draw themselves with white features instead of Asian features, then it's ok for us to put people with white features instead of Asian features in the film roles. If it's a big problem, then just stop idealizing yourselves as white people in your comics and cartoons.
-
Jesus Christ on a cracker, some people are fucking stupid.
-
Goddammit with jellybabies, some peeps are such fucking morons.
-
No bullshit. Maybe i'm crazy but I did. But The Happening...holy shit that was bad.
-
Sounds like farting to me. I mean really.
-
The late 1800's was not what you think it is. They were trying to adopt western industrialization techniques and weapons not fucking pop culture. Your obvious narrow mind only sees that Asians are drawing themselves to look Caucasian cause they don't use slits basically shows your racial bigotry. It's inherent in your point of view. BTW large eyes were a trait in Disney Anime copied not to designate race but rather to portray innocence like BAMBI... don't try to argue history with me son...i'll fucking bury you...The late 1800 trade with the west by Japan was mostly military and industrial techniques. The clothing in certain cases was a fad comparable to white kids in the u.s. wearing chinese kung fu slippers in the 80's with their break dancing outfits, or martial arts. So since white kids like martial arts and shit does that mean all white kids in America want to be Asian? See where your logic is going?
-
to realize how wrong you are, is to look at ANY Japanese art prior to the westernization trend to see that Japanese people DID draw themselves with noticeably Japanese features. http://www.artsmia.org/weber-collection/images/sig-image.jpg as only one example, the point being one only has to glance at this image to immediately know you're looking at a Japanese person. it doesn't look exaggerated, or insulting, it just looks like a stylized, serious depiction of a Japanese woman. And this is not how Japanese people draw themselves anymore. Post westernization, they draw themselves as white people. And lets cut out this 'white people think all asian want to be them' crap. Chinese people don't draw themselves as white. Koreans don't. ONLY the Japanese draw themselves as white. You're just in denial.
-
Aang was voiced by Zach Tyler, without a hint of any kind of an accent. Not exactly Asian, is he now? Let's see, he looks Caucasian, not Asian. He sounds "white," and he's voice-acted by a Caucasian actor. If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck, guess what? It's a fucking duck!
-
What small favors!
-
LET'S look at china. The west desperately wanted chinese art and products so they resorted to introducing Opium to do so. During the 19th and early 20th century the WEST was OBSESSED with obtaining Asian ART and sculpture does that also mean every white person in the U.S. wants to be Asian?
-
see my disney comment above....and to ye not guilty I know a shitload of ASians that don't say fucking "robster craws" dumbass.
-
anymore than we needed Speed Racer or Aeon Flux? Is this just to do a little something for the kids that were too slow to get the series...we have to make a slick mindless ADD friendly Hollywood version for those too "special" or just too mentally lazy to keep up with serial storytelling.
-
because even if I admitted you were right, which I'm not by a long shot, then how does Japan represent all of Asia? So since Africans have been "americanized" with white clothing as such it's ok for white people to dress in blackface and be Black now?
-
You can google Chinese *animation* or Korean *animation* and see LOADS of characters that have A. BIG eyes to convey innocence while also maintaining B. a slight slant. So stop being all self-righteous and calling people names when you're being proven wrong. I'm not saying the Japanese draw their characters to look white, I'm just saying other countries can and do make their characters look Asian, therefore disproving one of your arguments.
-
if we could collectively get enough people to refer to it this way, we could ruin its potential box office. that should be the goal, embarrass people out of even considering seeing this retarded crap so we never have to be subjected to another m nightmare again.
-
In the Zuko role? Where's all the anger for that? Why is it okay for an Indian-American filmmaker to cast an African-Indian-Englishman as the villain, but its soooo not okay to cast a caucasian kid as the hero? At least the kid cast as Aang actually looks like how the character was drawn. But you know what, I'm with you. I'm still going to get pissed that a black man was cast as the Kingpin. That shit just ain't right!
-
google anime and see where large eyes come from before saying shit you don't know...don't get owned twice in this talkback....it is taken from Disney to portray innocence.
-
Truly, you've earned the dumbshit award for that riveting train of thought. Many diverse folks can sound "white," even your mom.
-
trolling or incredibly stupid! Which is it?I guess George Takei is white because he "sounds" white or maybe he just speaks, english? And Smackfu you are in a sorry state of denia! you are such an ignorant fuck it's not even funny. you do know stan lee originally wanted KINGPIN to be a black man in the comics right? that's besides the point, I wasn't in favor of that nor was I in favor of making Sam Jackson as Fury...so don't assume.

by mediagold
Now this hack is directing some cartoon? I guess he should consider himself lucky. He's not worthy enough to direct traffic.
-
This series is based in a fantasy world, but the groups are CLEARLY based on various global cultures: ANG is CLEARLY an Asian name (Chinese, Korean, Japanese? dunno. ask an ethnologist); the water tribes are CLEARLY Inuit influenced; MOST of the art direction in general is eastern influenced; ALL the fighting styles are based on EASTERN martial arts.
It's just narrow-minded, lazy, and pandering to not make this a more ethnically diverse cast. Maybe we'll see a more ethnic support cast, but that's even worse by implication. -
It doesn't matter how Aang dresses or what language he writes in. It is show canon that Aang was removed from his family as a child and raised by the monks in the Air Temple, and we know nothing about his ancestry or family. Clearly the monks taught him how to write, etc. It has nothing to say about what race he is. Aang is Caucasian, and the stupid race instigators need to get over it already.
-
Who's saying Japan represents all of Asia? I think you're reading way more into what I'm saying, which is simply that Anime draws it's characters as white, so when we make a movie out of that Anime we're going to cast white people in the roles. So that they LOOK THE WAY THEY DO IN THE CARTOON. Is it insulting to Asians? Probably. But I don't really care because the source material, the Anime, drew them as white in the first place. With pink skin, round-shaped eyes, and most often flowing, wild blonde hair. All features that Japanese people DON'T have. Perhaps the best place to start in your quest to stop the depiction of Asians as white, is the Anime itself. You start drawing Asians again instead of Aryans, we'll start casting Asians in the film adaptations.
-
Since I eat sushi and can use chopsticks, I'm Asian. Oh
-
clearly the stupidest fucking person....so considering there are no fucking white people anywhere to be found in the AVATAR world, a white couple happened to be there and had a child, gave to the monks, and then left? You're like 10 years old aren't you? LMAO
-
but if you feel he is, then more power to you. Just get off your damn high horse trying to convince us we're wrong.
-
and who the fuck are you to say ASians don't have pink skin or round eyes. ASIA and the pacific rim represent the most people on the planet... HAVE YOU seen even a tenth of the Asian people on the planet? You're so blinded by your fucking RACIAL bias you think anime characters should have racial markers to look Asian....you know what dude....I'm done with your stupid ass. IF you wanna see White people in Anime, even though there are countless experts, artists, anime creators themselves that can tell you you're wrong....then go ahead. Just don't get pissed when people call you or your observation racists cause that's what it is.
-
They clearly need a dose of reality. I guess they watch too many fucking cartoons. Aang is white, deal with it. Heh.
-
your posts? Your shit never ceases to simultaneously amuse and confuse. The mental contortions you have put yourself through today defending yourself on this inane "is kung fu cancer boy white or asian" debate you bumbled into...what can I say - jaw-dropping. Your closing arguments (5 posts in, btw) deserve a repost:
"I'm not saying the Japanese draw their characters to look white, I'm just saying other countries can and do make their characters look Asian, therefore disproving one of your arguments." Well played, my friend, well played. -
if you could eat sushi, use chopsticks, write chinese, always dress in Asian clothing 24/7, practice Buddhism, Shintoism, or Taoism in addition to being an expert in Shaolin kung fu and was named AANG then yes you're asian...

With these pictures being posted only three days after other movie news sites have.

last point...this is not the rant of individuals...respected organizations like MANAA and the EAST WEST Players all protest this movie. I love how some white people think it's their right to choose what minorities should find offensive or not...peace out.
-
Your whole argument from the start is that Japanese don't see themselves as having narrow, slanted eyes and other features that whites attribute to them. But looking at almost all other Asian art pre-anime clearly shows that they do, as they not only draw themselves with Asian features, but Asian features so specific that you can actually tell by looking at them which depiction of which Asian race you're looking at. One can easily tell an 18th century portrait of a Japanese person from one of a Chinese person. So your argument about Japanese self-perception is utterly defeated and proven wrong. Anime art clearly depicts Japanese people as white people. Not only that, but in many of these very same Anime you will find depictions of Japanese people that actually look like Japanese people, that were purposely drawn to depict Japanese people, and they have *darker skin*, *straighter hair* and *narrower eyes* than the protagonists. Which again points to the same notion of Japanese self-loathing, in that how come the protagonist of these Anime programs, the stars, the heroes, be the ones who are proudly drawn to obviously look like Japanese people, if the artists obviously have the ability to do so?

"it (large eyes) is taken from Disney to portray innocence." Where did I imply otherwise? You really should learn how to argue and not let your emotions get the best of you. You start slipping up and make mistakes.

Sokitome, thanks for making this talkback hilarious.

But damn, I guess it'd be wrong to cast one of them in this role too.

Sokitome, you believe the worlds in Avatar are all thats there?
by d.vader
I guess you believe that in LOTR, Middle Earth is it, right, there's no more to the world? Nothing south? Or far east? And you insult someone else for believing there's prrrooooobbbbbbably a bigger world out there beyond what's presented in Avatar? Don't be so ignorant and then attempt to call the kettle black.

Why does Aang have a target on his head and not an arrow?
by theghostwholurks
And yeah, he should be Asian. But then, so should Goku have been in Dragonball: Evolution, as well as Chun Li in Street Fighter. But in all cases we get White/European actors in the roles (Kristen Kreuk is about as Asian as Dean Cain and almost never plays one in her roles), mainly because the moronic Powers That Be who make these films ARE racist (though they'd SWEAR on their hypocritical, liberal souls that they're not) and falsely believe that the HERO of these movies must be White in order to appeal to the audiences who see their movies.Never mind that NO ONE went to SEE these crappy films, partly BECAUSE they hired completely inappropriate people for the leads, or that this perception has been proven false time after time through film history (Bruce Lee, anyone???).And if you already have a ready blueprint of how these characters are supposed to look, at least hire actors dedicated enough to supplant their egos and love of hair gel long enough to shave their heads and wear the right makeup so they actually LOOK the part. Dev Patel's look in this film is pathetic. >:(

I have to say this has been a llively but disturbing talkback!
by hollywoodhellraiser
Big thanks to Sokitome, ImmaculateDeception, Cant_stop_yawning2, and even D. Vader and Smackfu! I personally found the conversations to be heated but lively.I hope what happens on this talkback stays on this talkback as I know we'll encounter each other again.Seeya next time, bitches!
-
I guess that makes her Asian as well.
-
D. VAder native americans are brought into this because INUIT/NA are racially asian and they are in AVATAR but you obviously don't know that cause you're talking about shit you don't know. If there is more to middle earth in LOTR then why were they all WHITE DUMBFUCK....please can't stop yawning2 pretty much summed up your posts accurately as being asinine. at least smack fu is trying to use some accurate evidence in his posts even though our interpretations are different. So please fuck off D.VAder and go to school and get educated.
-
I think it's funny that people get riled up about an adventure that takes place in ANOTHER WORLD. You might as well get upset that there are not Vogons or triple breasted whores of eroticon 6.
I enjoyed the cartoon series and prefer to focus on M. Night's ability to get strong performances from child actors. I hope for the best. -
is that if Japanese people actually look at Anime art and honestly see visual depictions of Japanese people, how come there are no Japanese people asking 'Hey, how come Americans draw themselves as Japanese?'. Where are all the Japanese people watching JLA or the Teen Titans and asking why Batman looks Japanese?
-
I'm kinda shocked people can't tell a bald-headed kid in bright orange robes doing kung fu is supposed to be a Shaolin monk, even if it is a fantasy version. Pretty sad that some people still need the slanty eyes and the ching-chong accents. :P

Shamalama dingdong to redeem himself and give us something really cool.
I think it is very good for him to do something that have not been his project from start to finish. -
I think he's extremely talented, but after the shit happening he has to make a great film.
-
lol..Petal looks NOTHING like the character..haha.
-
There aren't really any Asians in the Avatar universe since there is no Asia in it.
-
Horrific racist casting and whacking an indian in there to project himself onto a character he may identify with or... WTF he looks nothing like prince... whatever the fuck his name was. When I watched the Happening I saw a director with his ego first that had left his talent somewhere between unbreakable and signs. Get lost.
-
If there aren't any Asians, there sure as hell aren't any Europeans. It's like LOTR - we know Middle Earth was a fantasy Europe, and we know the four nations in the Avatar world are Tibetan, Inuit, Chinese/Korean, and Japanese.
-
Anime characters don't look white - they're usually pretty racially neutral. I wonder if anyone here has actually seen how white people are caricatured in anime - huge noses, bushy hair, and thick features. The only characters who look stereotypically Asian in anime are Chinese - obviously not a flattering distinction.
-
Dude, "Why were they all white in LOTR"... Why were they all white in LOTR... Obviously you've never seen the movies. Or you've never read the books, because if you had, you wouldn't have gone and embarrassed yourself to the AICN community. I don't have the time or desire to educate a moron like you on why you're wrong, so I'll just let you continue to think you're smart and making good points because, well clowns like to be laughed at.
-
this movie looks great!!
-
... God save us all.
-
So does it really matter if the kid is asian? I mean it's an AMERICAN anime anyhow, so why the fuck not? BTW not all of M Night's movies suck, well the only one being really good is Unbreakable.
-
Half of those kids will grow up to be terrorists mark my words.

That is all you need to know.
Oh and smackfu should actually study manga, Japanese culture and jump off a cliff. Or at least read these articles:

http://www.matt-thorn.com/mangagaku/faceoftheother.html
http://community.livejournal.com/racebending/39897.html
P.S. Yes, people are pissed off about Zuko. Zuko is very obviously Japanese or Chinese, not Indian. There is only one Indian character on the show, a very important one, the Guru Piktah. -
...that insist that because anime characters have round eyes, they're obviously meant to portray Asians as Caucasian, I ask you this: Would you say John Cho (Harold, Sulu) looks 'typically' Asian? Would you also agree that Neil Patrick Harris (Dr. Horrible) looks typically Caucasian? Check out this link:
http://nymag.com/images/2/daily/entertainment/07/10/29_qm_lg.jpg
There. It's settled. You lose. Point being, a lot of people tend to have this very warped, exaggerated view of Asian features. -
Just because it's fantasy does not make Harry Potter not British, the Monkey King not Chinese, or Lord of the Rings not Anglo Saxon.
Hell, why not have latino Americans in Harry Potter! Or Black people in Lord of the Rings!
Yea thought so.
Also, so you guys think that because a show is written in America that Americans cannot write things about other cultures? Right.
Basically, this film is going to become a live action version of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jafd97yJFOI -
I can never tell how old a person is supposed to be in anime/manga. Unless they're obviously an infant or elderly, most characters look like they could be anywhere from their teens to early 30s, male or female. Facial hair sometimes helps (see Pops Racer), but not always.
(Still wondering why the Fist of the North Star was drawn to resemble Donny Osmond.) -
Don't forget Patrick Stewart's hooded eyelids.
-
He was playing a half white/half Chinese guy, and I'll be darned if David Carradine doesn't look like he could be that in real life. A little more makeup and a more pronounced accent helped seal the deal.
Bruce Lee would have been a better choice, of course, but it's not like Carradine was going all Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's." -
I loved Unbreakable, I even kinda like liked Signs, but... great cartoon, though. The series finale was remarkable: kid-friendly and profoundly mature at once.

If the Japanese draw themselves as "white" (which is THE stupidist thing I have ever read on AICN), have you seen how they draw an Anglo person? They all kinda look like John Wayne of Charlton Heston. Even the women.

It's only ignorant if you're NOT one of the races who constantly gets "reimagined" as white when something translates from any other media into film or television. It's constant.

Bullshit, Asians draw large eyes because they're xenophobic.
by ganymede3010
According to my X who's Asian. She informed that in China, Japan, Korea, the Asians with larger eyes are considered "prettier" then those who don't. And that doesn't surprise me. Each race has idiotic phobia's about themselves. Blacks don't like their flat noses. Whites don't like their flat lips, and Asians don't like their slanted eyes. Also, she told me to turn to any all Asian channel. And you'll notice that most if not all of the commentators have very round eyes by Asian standards. Which is sad. Because I absolutely love the slanty eyed Asian chicks. They're so fucking sexy.

reversing all the misfortune that has fallen his way since about half way through the movie "Signs". Furthermore I predict Matt Stafford will be the game MVP when the Detroit Lions crush Cincinnati in next year's Superbowl.

my ex is Japanese (and an artist... AND a lover of anime), and she told me that the large, exaggerated eyes were initially copied from Disney (see: Bambi) because they conveyed innocence (a point noted earlier in the tb). artists continued with the tradition because it allowed them to better convey emotion. but this is also the same girl who showed up at my house in the rain at 3am because i wouldn't answer my cell, so who knows?

This is obviously American anime for american people. If it were japanese anime, it would have involved tentacles, school-girl outfits, and lots of rape. Damned Japanese...
-
I was just watching that Red Cliff movie...many of the actors have pretty relatively round looking eyes imo. Likewise, many caucasian actors have smaller looking eyes. Ya know?
So if a cartoon character is drawn as having anime-ish round eyes, it doesnt mean 100% he's caucasian. I mean, Chun Li in the videogames is clearly labeled as being from China, yet she has big eyes. Goku from Dragon Ball is based off the monkey king story, a Chinese legend, right? And he's drawn with those anime eyes. Who cares? Why can't they be asian? -
We're the Mary Poppins of ethnicities: we're practically perfect in every way. ;)

complaining about. whether or not Aang is caucasian or not (and he isn't, let's be serious here), at least that kid looks like him. i don't know a damn thing about this show, but looking at the pic of Dev and who he's supposed to portray, i know that M. The focus has been on the eyes, but clearly the size of breasts, the size of muscles, indicate that it's far from realistic and is just the style. Same with the amount of blood that comes gushing out or the size of the swords they have.

As ignorant as the average American may be, that is nothing compared to the average aicn talkback poster. Many of these guys are social shut ins who view the world exclusively through the "magical" world of movies, cartoons, tv, video games, etc.
That having been said, my wife is from Seoul and I've spent a fair amount of time both there and in Tokyo and you see a fair amount of ignorance about other cultures, as well as some scary xenophobia and racism in those counties as well. -

Anyone see something strange with both of Ang's hands? the one holding the staff looks weird, and I don't get what the other hand is doing... ??????????????
-
But the potential validity of the issue in question is, as always, drowning in stupid. And what a show it is. Whole paragraphs about whether or not cartoon characters look 'white'. It's all too beautiful.
-
i agree, toro004... the first time i looked at the pic, i too thought something was off about it. does the kid have two right hands?
-
Is it me, or have they switched that kid's left and right hands in that top photo? Lookit the thumbs.
-
I'm trying to rescue it from the stupidity because I feel strongly about this subject. There's a real, honest-to-Goku Asian kid out there who's a pretty good actor (666: THE CHILD nonwithstanding) and can do excellent martial arts and is Asian, and he's not even remotely possible as a casting consideration? Booboo Stewart would've been a perfect Aang, but they had to go with a white kid. And they were going to go with a white Prince Z, too, before Jesse McCartney's contract with a concert tour did that little wizardry in before it happened. I think it's a shame that people are turning this into a "whining party" because it's honestly a really awful shame.Native Americans get the shaft on this kind of thing all the time, but Asians are basically just not at all represented. And the thing is, we in the audience KNOW it's not that Noah Ringer is the best kid for the role - he's the best white kid. And that's horrible. Check out my video link from before. Don't YOU think it's suspect that this kid exists and isn't Aang? He's well known, too, appearing in hundreds of print ads. If you've ever opened a Sunda circular for Target (or been in the stores) he's on display everywhere.
-
You people literally bitch about everything. It's fucking dis-TRAC-ting! The "asians" in this cartoon all have blue eyes. Bitch about M Night casting some pudgy kid and losing the simple arrow tattoos, if you must. But goddamn, this talkback is fucking embarrassing, man, embarrassing.
-
Believe it or not, the people who grieved over "flames on Optimus" weren't discussing an issue as real as Hollywood racism. It bothers me, especially when people can't SEE it. I'm not going nuts over this - as a fan of AIRBENDER I'm looking forward to seeing it beyond words. But ... the non-Asian bias is legitiamte, I think.
-
You racists are inventing a problem to make your self feel pleasantly outraged. Most of the characters in Avatar are from no obvious race.
Their FANTASY culture has Asian influences, but you wouldn't be so racist as to say that requires a certain bit of DNA, would you?
This reminds me of the absolutely racist talkbackers bitching that Abrams cast a Korean as a Japanese character. Obviously, no genetics would EVER mingle, right? Especially in the 23rd century, right? Culture and race are the same, right?
Busybodies. -
m. night could be directing a film about dinosaurs with lasers on their heads and i wouldn't be interested.

on why some Asian actors get eye operations to look more European. If you watch old footage of Jackie Chan in his pre- stardom /stuntman days you can tell he got the operation, and in fact I think I read somewhere that some of the Honk Kong studios encourage people to get it done. I agree that not all Asians are stereotypically slant eyed, but some of the people who aren't have had cosmetic surgery to look that way.And what's really amusing is you complain about White Racism, but noone wants to examine the internal racism among ethnicities in a given group. Japanese people complained when they cast Chinese actresses in MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA. No Asian solidarity there. Mexicans complained when they cast Jennifer Lopez, a Puerto Rican, to play SELENA. No Latino /Hispanic support for a fellow actress? And if M Night had cast a Japanese or Korean kid to play Ang, some Chinese person somewhere would be insisting he has to be Chinese. You want White people to honor and respect you but you hate and fear each other as much as you claim we hate and fear you. Americans are supposed to get along with everyone but Asians aren't?
-
Where's that? Sounds tropical.
Maybe it's the monkey in Harry's animation thingy. The one ripping the dress off a fat amputee. -
That kid is fat, his hands look retarded, he's trying to force that stance, the symbol on his head is just shittily done, and he looks bad bald. Bad as in cancer patient. Should've made sure the main actor doesn't look abnormal without hair since he's going to be bald. Never thought Dev Patel would be the best looking thing from this so far. Still hate him too though. He can't even shave his head for the part.
-
i'm on vacation. it's late and i'm a little drunk and tired so I'll make this short as possible.
If you believe Asians making their eyes bigger is an example of us wanting to appear white then what about white people getting tans and collagen shots into their lips to make them fat. They also get butt implants. Are you white people trying to be black?
It was a minority of Asians who complained about different nationalities being represented unfairly but it is only a reaction to when most white Americans (cause Americans aren't just white) believe all Asians are the same. So just because there are internal problems within races it gives you the right to be racists. That's lame. Why should Asians and Asian Americans have to prove anything to you. White people do the same shit. The English vs. Scots and IRish. Catholics vs. Protestants vs. Jews(yes they are Caucasian).
to D. Vader: ummmm the entire main cast of Lord of the Rings was pretty much white Caucasians.
-
I'm telling you they'll be storming more hotels in their country in 10 years time.

All I give a shit about is that the person cast in the role looks like the character they're playing. The kid cast as Ang looks like the cartoon character. Thats all I ask. I'm fine with that. Regardless of your guys "He is and Is not asian" argument.
No offense to anybody, I'm not trying to be racist, but if an asian kid had been cast in the role then tell me how the fuck he looks like the cartoon character? Is he going to undergo a bleaching of his skin ala Michael Jackson and sport blue contacts to better look like the character he is playing? Not to imitate a caucasion person but to just look more like Ang as how everyone knows him. I just don't see that happening.
And on another note. You people arguing about this shit do realize that the age group that the cartoon and movie are actually created for and aimed at (which is most likely the 13 and under crowd) have no fucking idea about any of this shit you're even arguing about right? It's a moot fucking point! When the kids go to the theatre to watch this they just expect Ang to look like he does in the cartoon. They have no knowledge about any of this Japanese animators copying disney's style bullshit or how western culture influenced Japan after WWII or whatever. If an asian kid had been cast in the part the kids would be like" Whos this? He doesn't look like Ang!". The kids would be the ones actually (And to quote sokitome)"Conveying innocence" in this particular case. They're not being racist. They're just being honest.
I'm sure the studios considered all of this before hand and decided to cast accordingly.
And yes I think the kid playing Zucko does not look enough like him. I don't care if he's indian or not. He just doesn't look enough like the character. -

In his final act of desperation, he is finally turning to someone's material other than his own and it looks like just the kind of bullshit from which people will turn away in droves.

Japanese anime characters ain't supposed to be white. And neither is Aang.

The great majority of Asians who get eye surgery are women. And they aren't trying to look like her -> http://tinyurl.com/qqdgvk
They're trying to look like her -->
http://tinyurl.com/rap4fj
Really, they are. But, if it makes it makes you feel better thinking that these Asian women are trying to look European, then knock yourself out. -
And a few friends are working on this movie. One dude I know is creating the backgrounds. Painted backgrounds. None of that CG bluescreen bullshit.
This movie is going to be friggin cool. -
One of these Last Airbender talkbacks not to argue about racism. It's been done to death and serves nothing. Just put your pointless petition links here (from which ever side you agree with) and leave.
But I guess we don't always get what we'd like, do we... -
Damn You Michael Bay
-
Agree w/ Amy Chasing - enough. I mentioned before, my wife is Korean. She has noted that there don't seem to be as many "minorities" - particularly asians - represented in tv, film, etc. as there ought to be but she also doesn't care much. As she has noted, if you go to Korea (or Japan or China) you aren't going to see any minorities in tv, film, etc...and nobody cares. Our country is unique from a diversity standpoint and we still have a way to go, however, bullshit comic book movies by hack directors definitely isn't where the battle should be fought. (Of course, if they had made Wolverine black or Storm white fanboys would have been up in arms (and sputtering to explain themselves) - even though there are black canadians and white africans).
More importantly - if I was asian and I was looking at this shitty movie - I'd be glad they hadn't cast an asian, even if that is what the character called for. Who would want to be associated with this crap? -
just imagine how bad that would be
-
...period.
-
But instead they made live action Bubblegum Crisis. Go figure. :\
-
Just to put it out there but the Ang photo seems to be at the Northern Air Temple or better yet at the Northern Water Tribe. Snow is on the ground by the wall, furthermore it the backdrop is the same as the on set photo which shows clear columns of "ICE" and the white buckets from the ceiling could drop snow or ash on to the set for the fire nation's attack on the Northern Water Tribe.
I wonder what Appa looks like, if the big fur-ball of fun looks like it belongs in the "Where The Wild Things Are" then that would be amazing. -
Symptoms include bloating, flatulence, etc. Harry Knowles is rumored to be an airbender...
-
dude, i don't know what you are on about - if this is about this cartoon this movie is based on, it sounds even worse than i imagined. "fire nation's attack on the Northern Water Tribe"? "big fur-ball of fun"?
look, if you're 12 or something, then, sorry - enjoy your youth (although you might want to consider getting a skateboard or something and putting this crap down because it sounds awful). If you're an adult, however (you sound a little like D. Vader) then i think it is time for a long look in the mirror. -
Would be to make this movie not suck.
-
lol that shit is too funny

someone fucked an alien a long time ago and gave birth to Chinese who inherited martian arts.

My point, which you either chose to ignore or are just ignorant about, was that there could be more to the world that is presented in Avatar than just those four nations, just as there is more to the world of LOTR than what we see in the movies or read about in the books. You said, and I quote: "If there is more to middle earth in LOTR then why were they all WHITE" And that's where you're wrong. While yes, the Fellowship was white, not everyone in the story was. There are repeated references to men of the lands to the south and east who are decidedly non-white. Why? Because even though its a fantasy world, Middle-Earth (specifically the portion of it that LOTR is concerned with) is supposed to be Ancient England/Europe. That's why the men from the south are described as having dark brown skin and black hair (Africans) and those from the far east are described as sallow-skinned (Asians). As you can see, what we see is a small part of a much larger world.

Hey how about some brief research to supplement your opinions? Was the father of Anime a little self-hating? h ttp://www.mutantfrog.com/2006/06/05/was-osamu-t ezuka-a-racist/
Are manga/anime characters meant to be white folk? http://web.archive.org/web/20060 5171943 57sh_re_/www.matt-thorn.com/mangaga ku/faceoftheother.h tml
Has anyone even SEEN a fucking Miyazaki before? Several of his characters are blatantly of Asian descent. Anime might have branched from one man's idea of what people look like, but it's all derivative. It's not like one person drew EVERY ANIME EVER and I've seen plenty of black Anime characters drawn with the same set of eyes as the "white" ones. However, considering what this article is actually about...Avatar has some Buddhist overtones and it's about a kid who practices a form of CHINESE martial arts. Also his name is Aang and several of the characters' names appear to have origins in Asian things. I'm willing to bet he's meant to be Chinese. But who gives a shit? It wouldn't sell in America if it didn't star an American. This is why the Asian actors were sidelined in Dragonball (no fuck you Goku is supposed to be Japanese). It's just how business is done...racistly. -

That's fine and dandy and all but when in the cartoon did they say any of the people were asian? They only said they were from the fire nation, water nation and so forth. In fact I thought the water tribe were more inuit anyway.
-
Names like ANG and practicing Kungfu is very non -Asian.
-
It's all in the mind of a retarded boy and his snow globe.

white supremacist; what is it exactly that that you have against asians anyway? were bullied by them in school?
-
I've never had a talkbacker fall in love with me quite the way you have. I gotta say, its flattering to see you follow me around like a lovesick pup.
-
damn never take a laptop with you on vacation.......ok you dumb fuck. EVERYONE IN THE MAIN CAST OF LOTR WAS WHITE...you say they mention other people of darker skins? Do they ever specifically mention any nationalities or racial bone structures? NO I've read the freaking books. No mention of Europe or Africa. YOu're making assumptions about race base on skin color. But you're right you could extrapolate races by the clues given to you in the book. So how is this different from Avatar. The setting, written language, and such all are clues to the racial make up of the group of heroes...THAT BEING SAID....This argument has always been about the main cast of AVATAR...we know there are gonna be ASians thrown in the background...BUt the main cast was always Asian...no matter how you want to juxtapose white people in everything. YOu say they have round eyes and white skin therefore WHITE...that's so fucking ignorant as I have stated ASians can come in that variety also. LOTR had an all white main cast while "Dark" skin ethnics were put under so much make up you couldn't tell what they were...BUT I'm not bitching about that. I don't care if LOTR was entirely white cause it's based on EUROPEAN myths I JUST wish the same respect was given to AVATAR which although created by white AMERICANs, BORROWED HEAVILY from EAstern religion, culture, and mythology. AND DIRECTLY COPIED architecture, clothing, and philosophies. FINALLY: THE producers, creators, and NICK execs have all stated before this is an ASIAN FANTASY WORLD....that being said I'm definitely done wasting my vacation on this talkback and I need to go back to the TAbles and gamble the rest of my money away like all us Asians do..
-
This is all I'll say to your idiotic post: Point out to me where I ever said this: "YOu say they have round eyes and white skin therefore WHITE" Did I? Nope. Never did dipshit.
-
"Do they ever specifically mention any nationalities or racial bone structures?" Yes, only they weren't called Africans, just as the whites weren't called Norwegians. "No mention of Europe or Africa. " No, but its implied. If you've read the books, then you would have known Middle-Earth is ancient Europe. Tolkien even said as much. Stop being so damned foolish. And hey, don't take that temper to the tables, you may come back empty-handed.
-
It's sickening, especially the parts where people say "Dang it they should look like Americans for it to sell, not Asians." Uh-huh.
-
"No, but its implied. If you've read the books, then you would have known Middle-Earth is ancient Europe. Tolkien even said as much." THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I've been saying you stupid moronic FUCK! THE RACE OF AVATAR IS IMPLIED...JEEZUS I HAVE TO USE ALL CAPS TO GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK FUCKING HEAD. IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME IN THE AVATAR UNIVERSE AND EVEN SUPPORTED BY THE CREATORS LIKE TOLKIEN SAID LOTR WAS EUROPEAN FANTASY. JESUS H FREAKING CHRIST I know it's ancient Europe I was never arguing that. I was saying it is something implied but never outright said. You JUST PROVED MY FUCKING POINT. you stated AVATAR could be any race cause it's never outright said but I'm saying it's implied like LOTR. No wonder this guy "can't stop yawning" thinks your a moron.
-
That is all.
-
lol, he's an alien from another planet. Pretty sure he's not supposed to be Japanese.
-
"THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I've been saying" No it hasn't you dumbshit. You said the only people in LOTR were white. You were proven wrong. Now you're getting huffy about it. The reason LOTR was brought up was because you insulted someone who said "hey, there could be other races in Avatar." I backed up his point by saying just because LOTR was concerned with the goings-on of Middle Earth , it didn't mean black people and Asians didn't exist: they were just in another part of the world that the story didn't deal with directly. Again, watch that forehead vein buddy. You don't want your blood bursting all over the craps tables. Don't get upset you're floundering because your arguments have been specious and off-topic in regards to what I've been saying.

D.Vader = Thanks for Ruining the Name of a Great Star Wars Chara
by sidepocket
Everyone in Lord of the Rings was white. This was the story that Tolkien felt the British did not have. The origin of Brittan and the rest of Europe. The only other kind of people that were mentioned and shown were Mediterranean because it's part of western Europe. There were no Black or Asian people because there did not need to be. In the same way there are no white people in The Monkey King or in Musashi.
Also, people still do not understand that Fantasy World does not mean just make everything up. Everything is based on something and the creators went out of their way to state that Avatar is a diverse Asian and Ingenious world. They have said it in their books, cometary and other such things. They even use Chinese symbols as the writing and in the title of the show. It would be like having a title of a show written in Arabic about Arabic characters and then the movie comes out and it's about White Christians. You people are like Harry, you love things no matter how truly shitty they are and you even ask for more you consumer assholes! -
In LOTR were the Mediterranean people and the "sallow skin" people are the Easter Europe ones ERGO Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, ect.
Remember, in Europe, Italians and people who are not the core of Europe (UK, Spain, Germany, France, Ireland) are not considered "white". You would be surprised on how many people in the UK say things like "hay I'm not even fully white, I'm 1/3rd Italian!" -
You're original reasoning was stating These actors could play the avatar parts cause there could be other races in the avatar verse. My response was why was lotr all white. and it was. The entire main cast was caucasian. Other races were covered up by heavy make up. but we've always been talking about the main fucking cast. it is implied what their race was NEVER outright said. YOU DON'T EVEN GET THE LOGIC CAUSE YOU IQ IS ABOUT AS MUCH AS MY FOOT. Take a fucking debate class to learn logical and critical thinking. IF you can logically imply the races of character of LOTR from clues in the books then why is so difficult for you to see that same logic applied to Avatar...you're the ones twisting words when a couple of us on this talkback have shown how ridiculous you are...Now i really have to get back to my heavy gambling...So I hope this discussion will be going on till monday when I can get back online so i can teach you some more on this subject dumbfuck!
-
I think you're mistaken. While he didn't specify "black", he did describe the men from the south (a land separated from Middle Earth by a sea), the ones riding the giant elephants, as having "dark skin" and "black hair", which could imply black Africans, or North Africans. And yes, its implied the Easterlings were from Asia, probably Mongols, if you had to make a distinction. And don't start making generalizations like "You people", because you start looking foolish.
-
As far as I'm concerned, you're really bad at this debate. You've made some good points, but you tend to ignore all of mine. Toodles.
-
is that the series is on the required reading list - along with the Art of War, the Prince, and Mein Kamp - for people who want to join the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang.
-
I win. Have any of you thought that the kids in Avatar are just a mixed race? They do live in a fucking fantasy world idiots. If they were Chinese they would speak Chinese right? No they speak English... It's a fantasy world for fuck sake they ride around on a flying Buffalo with a shit load of legs. The kids don't look Asian they don't speak Chinese and Japanese they live in a world where they can manipulate water and fire and earth... I say it's open ended on how you can cast them. Also some of you need to go to college or read a book once and a while. Japanese and Western Culture have been tied together for a long time. After the Meiji restoration they tried to immitate the West and become a economic power. Whatever the debate is over stop crying about them looking Asian because they don't even look, sound or are placed in anything that would even really make you believe they are Asian since it's a fantasy fucking world with creatures and other crazy shit in it. I would understand if they made a movie about Bruce Lee or Mao and they casted Ben fucking Affleck in it. But this? Come on what the fuck really...

Um, of course, if the studio wants it to make more money, which they probably do. It's simple economics bro. I'm Canadian. Do you know what films are at the top of our theatres box office returns every month? Not Canadian films. American films. Look in almost any other country in the world's box office numbers and you'll find American films at the top of the list. EVERYONE in the world watches American films. Go to any country, Brazil, Norway, Bangladesh, and go ask then what films they're looking forward to this summer. How many of them do you think are going to start rhyming off Japanese titles? Very few, if any. Because in every country, people watch a) the movies made by their own country and b) American movies. The worldwide movie goers obviously prefer to watch Americans on screen than Asians, otherwise "Yomei Ikkagetsu No Hanayome" would be at the top of every countries Box Office results rather than Terminator Salvation and Star Trek. I'm sure it makes your ego feel better to pretend that it's just that Americans are racist against you, I hate to break it to you but there is a general global consensus performed every weekend in the form of people paying for what they want to see, and the results consistently show that the only people interested in watching a movie full of Asians, are Asians. There are exceptions of course, there are occasionally great Asian films that come out and have good worldwide numbers. But generally, not so much. I'm sorry, but Supply & Demand is a beast that cannot lie. There is generally no demand for Asian film exports, and there is a great demand for American film exports. So yes, when a big studio makes a film, more often than not it's going to be cast with American actors to minimize the risk of it failing.
-
So is this kind of a knock off of Ninjai - the Little Ninja?? 'Cause that webseries kicks ass!! Forget Avatar, where's the Ninjai movie??
-
It's not really a matter of racism. It's a matter of marketing and what audiences WILL see. You can hate it and call anyone who says it's true a racist all you want but....did you look at the pics? Reality.
-
...and indeed it's supposed to be an all-Asian cast. This bozo Aang looks like he's standing in a 'set' that looks to me like the Northern Water Tribe city. This is ridiculous.
-
did you ever consider drawing the characters as Asian when you were 'working' on the series? Might have averted this whole arguement...
-
That's hilarious. Sad, but hilarious.

Yes, American films are greatly popular worldwide, but they can star a variety of races, right? What about Denzel Washington films? Disney's Mulan made $120 million domestic and $183 million worldwide.

His "Forbidden Kingdom" was one of the highlights of 2008 and was a professional attempt to bring some of the magic of a Hong Kong fantasy flick to Hollywood. I have no faith in Shamalamadingdong doing anything worthy with this.

The point of my "uh-huh" was not that Hollywood acts that way, but the idiocy of suggesting people who are American aren't Asian ... and vice-versa. Damn, man - you're usually more on-the-ball than that!

Dude, I don't like making enemies on this site, and I don't go out of my way to insult people, so I'd like to extend an olive branch to you. Like I said, I don't like making enemies on here; I've been around AICN long enough to see trolls come and go, and I appreciate good, healthy debates and rivalries. But there's no reason to immediately launch into insults, like you did, unprompted, with me, which is why I've continued to play Devil's Advocate. You just get so riled up about it and you start making mistakes and assumptions, it gets to be quite funny. And dare I say you deserved it since you decided to start calling me names. Once you went there, I had to play along. But I see now you suffer from an overactive temper, and since you're in Vegas, I'd really hate to see you lose out big. Although if he does deliver another bowl winder of a flick he will have entered into the rarified air of Ed Wood. So he does have that going for him.

Seeing that this show came out in 2005, it doesn't warrant being a concern of most users of this site since its not rapping their childhood. Maybe just rapping their mid 20's with found memories spent in mummys basement.

It's not an anime, it's an American cartoon. Nobody gives a fuck what goes on in anime. It's completely irrelevant to Avatar. Oh, and Aang is Caucasian.

The creators have gone on record to say that. The original artwork was very ethnic like Mulan but then they said to do it like Anime so they did.
In short, fuck you "Ye Not Guilty" and your David Carradine Jr. cock worship! -
It's raping our children's memories. This is 2009. Over 30 years after the civil rights movement. Kids are going to look back on this and mock it horrified like we do the old Fu Man Chu and Charlie Chan videos.
-
When the fuck did American = White? Last time I walked around my town and the city, I see all sorts of colors and ironically, I see more Asian people than White People and I'm not even near Chinatown!
You guys remind me of what George Carlin said. "All Men are created Equal...except for Niggers, Indians and Women!" -
Yea and you notice who they casted in the films? TANNED WHITE MEN!
The "men from the south" are Mediterranean, not African. Because people who are Italian are much darker skin by British standards. Like I said, they do not even consider Italian white!
And the eastern "sallow skin" people are Eastern Europe! Have you seen the sausage belt before? We look like a nuke hit us!
I also hate all this "no demand for Asian films." Have you SEEN the Asian film section? Especially Kung Fu movies? IT'S HUGE!!! It makes a shit ton of money, enough for Asian actors like Jackie Chan, Jet Lee and Tony Jaa to cross over bitch!
Also to clarify, "you people" means AICN talkers, because the race of an AICN talk backer is pure shitcock. ;D -
brought me tandoori chicken, you bet there's going to be hell to pay.
-
Fucking Shamalan. I want to curbstomp him so fucking bad.
-
Your conclusions are open to debate, as there are a wide range of opinions on whether or not the men from the South (Harad) are Africans and the men from the East (Rhun I think) are Asians, You say the Southerners are Mediterranean, and yet I've never ever heard that stated anywhere before. But its entirely plausible, I'm not denying that. Except for when you take into account that the men from Far Harad (further south) are said to have black skin. Now, it seems, Harad really is a stand-in for Africa. As far as the movie goes, why weren't the Haradrim black? Well that's obvious, I think? There's already a small stigma attached to Tolkien where some see his writing as racist because the non-white humans have allied themselves with Sauron (never minding the fact that they weren't evil, they were just deceived by evil). What do you think the reaction would be if Jackson cast all those guys riding the oliphants as black actors? Yeah, the calls for racism would be innumerable. That's why they weren't black. Same reason why the natives in King Kong weren't black (and were instead some weird mixture of Pacific rim cultures and others). And, on a side note, the one Haradrim that is killed by Faramir in the Two Towers film, the one who falls from the oliphant right in front of Frodo and Sam, is clearly not a tanned white man. He looked very middle-eastern to me, but its a very quick shot, and dark skin could denote anything: Mediterranean, Maori, Middle-Eastern, Native American, etc etc. But I'm pretty sure it wasn't just a "tanned white man".
-
Have some big quality control issues, like Grand Canyon size issues.
-
IF YOU WANT to know why the studios went the way they did, you need only look at the talkback. I presented a perfectly reasonable casting choice for Aang, and haven't heard COMMENT ONE about it in repsonse from the people supporting all-white Airbenders. I wonder, what do -any- of you think of the Booboo Stewart idea?
-
FANTASTIC LINK
The racism of the White American Mob is very much evident here - remember, Asians can ONLY look like Hiro from HEROES or Harold from HAROLD AND KUMAR. That's it. -
Dunno anything about his acting ability, though. Same goes for whomever they did cast as Aang.
-
But why would you need to say it explicitly? This is what the Avatar world looks like in the show: http://racebending.com/essayinimages.php
-
*No one* responded to your Boo boo link. Has nothing to do with being Asian or White it seems. No one seemed to notice it.
-
I mean, how much more obvious did they need to make it?
-
i have only seen midnight shmellyman's good movies. I enjoyed the sixth sense, unbreakable, signs, and even the village. Everyone said the new ones were bad so i didn't go see them.
-
I've read this whole thread. He's been proven wrong on every point and yet he keeps posting. It's hilarious. When does one admit he's wrong?
-
Because he isn't. Some of the details don't stick, but in the end the casting is monumentally screwed up.
-
You all seem determined to go over old ground. So here's a pile I've written before about Avatar: The Not-So-Racist Airbender...
So how is the petition against the casting going BTW? Since people obviously seem to still feel passionately about this. It just seems to me that if the petition was meant to raise awareness, maybe it has maybe it hasn't but it probably was mainly preaching to the choir. It certainly didn't seem to change anything.
Bottom-line there are legitimate arguments on both sides here and neither side seems willing to listen to the other. Because of the gray-area that is trying to raise racism awareness using a fantasy animated show as the basis, I think playing the race card on this will either be ineffective (because most people don't know the show, let alone the creators intentions) or counter-productive because calling racism on a fantasy animated show adaptation seems a little petty when individuals are being undeniably race-discriminated against in the workplace. The casting of Airbender is not an open & shut case. If it were there'd be no argument here.
Don't get me wrong, I think it'd be nice to have Asian & Inuit looking people in Airbender. But it'd be nice, that's all.
I'm all for equality, but here are some reasons why Airbender isn't the best vehicle for racism awareness:
It's a fantasy story set in a fantasy world. It's never stated that this is Earth in the past or future. Basically it's an alien world making the people on it aliens (with American accents). The same is done in Lord Of The Rings (ie. it's never mentioned it's Earth during the story), and I honestly couldn't care less who they cast in that either. The key here is IT'S A FANTASY.
It has a flying 6-legged bison so there's obvious artistic license taken.
The creators have gone on record saying it's a world influenced by various human cultures (Tibetan, Inuit, Korean, etc). But most people don't know this - they're more concerned as to whether the movie is worth seeing.
The "Asian" look of the world doesn't change the fact that the story is full of stereotypical American values and story devices (and accents). Some may coincide with Asian ideals, but overall Avatar has more in common with Disney than it does with Zhang Yimou and Hayao Miyazaki.
In the cartoon, Aang (the last Airbender) looks like a white kid in Asian-influenced clothing. It is left to the audience's imaginations to either accept the the way the characters look (and sound), or not.
The producers have allowed the current casting choices. They have alot more experience with this than we do. Why would they do this if it spelled the doom of a multi-million dollar project (and the obvious potential sequels).
International audiences know this is an American production and simply accept that the accents are American. It'll star Americans - which can be of any race.
As I've said before, if Kirsten Dunst was cast as the lead in Memoirs Of A Geisha 2 - then the argument against casting white people in an Asian role would have far more credibility than having white kids in a fantasy cartoon adaptation.
Now can we please all get some sleep. -
He's going to get mobbed to death by weaboos. Only his bo-staff crowd control skills will potentially save his life.
-
The pics of the LA versions of Aang and Zuko look tuff. They resemble the characters on the animated show, which was my main concern. I don't want Aang to look like a prepubescent Bruce Lee to satisfy those hung up on authentic ethnicity (emits Sylvester-like spray across keyboard). Can't wait to see Katara and Toph, not to mention Appa the giant white flying bison. Hopefully he won't look like Paul Blart in a fursuit.
-
Hi Amy Chasing. The controversy got Price Zuko recast. That's how the protest is going. Jesse McCartney supposedly left over scheduling issues in February, but we know he was already doing martial arts training and other preproduction prep. And if you read the articles real close, it turns out *they're paying him anyway,* which suggests that the filmmakers dropped him.
Let that sink in. Before the controversy heated up, ALL FOUR of the main characters were white. And if McCartney had stayed cast as Zuko, the Fire Nation characters currently being played by minority actors would have been white too - certainly his relatives Uncle Iroh, Firelord Ozai, and his sister Azula if there's ever a sequel.
So if there had been no controversy, this movie would have been even more whitewashed than it is now. Bottom line. It pays to complain. -
It's about this little kid who masters kung fu so that he can sell nerd game cards or pogs or action figures or some other crappy Japanime shit like that. Also M. Night fucking blows
-
Of course the petition is part of the protest, but if the petition has the same political power as most do in this world then it's safe to say the petition itself is rather ineffective. Even most strikes and media backlash have limited effect on controversial issues. Just look at the recent writers strike for example.
So before you go giving yourself too much credit then please let all the factors "sink in" and let Occam's razor do the rest.
That said as Sidepocket says above "P.S. Yes, people are pissed off about Zuko. Zuko is very obviously Japanese or Chinese, not Indian. There is only one Indian character on the show, a very important one, the Guru Piktah."
So seems your recasting example doesn't even make the protestors happy. -
Fuck you Shitmalan.
-
Okay's Occam's Razor. The filmmakers were going to make a film with an Asian/Inuit fantasy world that apparently *didn't have any Asian/Inuit people* in it. They got called on it, did damage control by swapping out Jesse McCartney for Dev Patel, and filled out the rest of the roles with any ethnic actors available on short notice. This made things *better* but not hunky dory. The original cartoon had all-minority characters. Originally they were going for all-Caucasian, and currently we're about halfway there with white good-guys v. dark-skinned bad-guys. There's still plenty to be ticked off about. Plus, there's the next two potential movies to consider. I personally will not shut up until we get a badass little East-Asian girl playing Toph.
-
First off, human racial categories technically do not apply to characters from other planets and alternate realities. That said, they usually reflect the society they're made for. It is why Superman looks white and aliens in Destroy All Monsters look like Japanese women.
But what is this that American audience = white or white-resemblance character? Frankly, I'm annoyed that Aang's going to be like that kid in Forbidden Kingdom. I don't need to see faces from my own race to see a movie and I wish this would stop. I think back to this lovely African American Toph I saw at Comic Con. Ideally, they should cast actors who reflect the specific country used for their character's. But I find it much better that Zuko was recast by a non-white character. Better still would be the three heroes not being all white. I would accept Aang as a white character more if Sokka and Katara weren't also white, or vice versa. -
Think of it this way. The original four peoples of Avatar were Inuit (Water Tribe), Tibetan (Air Nomads), and two East-Asian conglomerations (Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation). The darkest characters were two of the heroes, Katara and Sokka, who came from the Inuit-influenced Water Tribe.
Now apparently two of the Avatar world's peoples are Caucasian (Air Nomads and Water Tribe), and the villainous Fire Nation is populated by dark-skinned South Asians. There are two East Asian actors cast in minor roles for the Earth Kingdom, and no Inuits/Native Americans to speak of. -
... but it was never made for a live-action adaption. I'm not even going to bother seeing it: I'd much rather keep the great memories I have of the TV show and make sure they aren't destroyed by this drivel.
-
well, if you have seen the show, then you would know that the kid they cast as Aang looks about as asian as he was drawn on the show. If he's supposed to be so fucking asian, then they should have drawn him with squinty eyes and shit, right? If the creators of the show didn't have enough balls to draw him as an asian, then why do the makers of the movie have to cast a goddamned asian in the fucking part? I don't give a fuck if he's actually supposed to be asian or not... jesus...

Aang's Asian. Have a Youtube explantion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKTvFhRbBt8

Also, I gotta agree with the basis of CZ's tally.
by themarinebiologist
If they were coming up with unknowns, might as well come up with unknowns that match the character description.
I still can't get past that "picture" of Zuko. I just can't. -
if you think that the Japanese don't draw themselves as whites, then i guess i'm not going to convince you. However i spent some time in Japan while in the Navy, and the Japanese ARE, in fact, obsessed with anglo-saxon culture (specifically American). I am not going to say it's because they hate themselves, but it IS a little odd to see Japanese youths dressed as greasers, and riding around on old Triumph motorcycles like they are fucking Steve McQueen or something.

Ack. Wrong video. Try this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBda7b9tRdk

I have plenty of asian friends without squinty eyes?
It's sad that one of the primary arguments that Aang is not asian is that he doesnt have squinty eyes. Even though his clothing and everything else is clearly in my opinion, asian inspired.
Also, so what if they talk in American accents? What, they have to talk in stereotypical asian accents to be asian? -
The producers originally didn't care that their main characters were white kids because that's what they've been doing in other productions (eg. Dragonball Z, Forbidden Kingdom). Then because of the success of Slumdog Millionaire they figure that more money can be made to have an Indian kid in the movie. Note they didn't choose any other Asian nationality (like the protestors have suggested), they specifically chose someone from an Oscar winning film.
So, by Occam's razor it's money, not protesting, that's the majority reason behind the recasting. Cynical but probable. -
Hang on. You think paying two different actors for one role is saving money?
-
This is going to be a bit weird but go with me on this... Imagine animated Aang without his trademark clothes on. Not so Asian looking now, is he.
As for the accents. Try living in a non-American English speaking country. We don't care if you're Asian-American, or African-American, to us you're all just American. So you can have the flying bison speaking with an American accent and it doesn't matter what he looks like, we get which country he calls home. -
I don't have their accounts in front of me. May I ask where you got your information from?
Regardless, it's the producers job to spend the budget as best they can, so obviously they think the movie can make more back if they ride on Slumdog's coattails. Why not, it worked for the Pussycat Dolls. -
First of all, i have nothing against this production...and I'm not protesting it or anything...I'm simply discussing. Also, I havent really watched much of the show.
When I talk about Aang, I am not speaking of that character alone in and of himself...I am talking within a context here....within the context of the Chun Li and Goku castings as well...
Chun Li has big eyes. She sometimes is drawn with borwn hair. Yet, from what I gather, it is widely accepted that she is Chinese (even casted as such in the first movie). Storyline wise, she is Chinese. She has a Mandarin name. IMO it doesnt matter if its arguable that she looks something else outside that costume.
Some may say Aang doesnt look asian, but what about the other Airbender characters? Do Katara and Sokka look caucasian at all, regardless of costume? -
The race baiters have no intention of having a rational discussion. They only want to stir up race hate. I'm done with them, except to say: Aang is Caucasian.
-
What accounts?
Here's an interview with McCartney where he talks about martial arts training: http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1603949/story.jhtml
Here's the EW article on Patel's casting that confirms that McCartney's still getting paid.

-
I've seen Chun Li drawn a number of different ways, but I guess the main reason I think of her as Chinese is that that's her backstory in the Street Fighter arcade game.
Aang doesn't have this backstory, and he's always drawn the same way. -
Katara and Sokka are actually the characters who look the least Caucasian. They're dark-skinned, wear parkas, and live in igloos. Essentially fantasy versions of Inuits/Eskimos.
-
I can guarantee you the following:
Airbender will get similar reviews to Eragon, and will gross less.
And FINALLY, this will nail shut this ONE HIT Wonder's coffin, and he will be deported back to his slumdog hut in Bombay, where he belongs.
End of story. -
Dude. Shyamalan's from Philly.
-
contract in some way. Talk conspiracy theories all you like in the end it comes down to what's the more marketable and what'll bring more box office bucks. Hanna Montana boy or Oscar winning boy. Not really a fair comparison is it.
-
I was talking about M.Night Half-wit.
NOT the kid actor from Slumdog Millionaire.
I have more respect for him than for Shyamalan, the one-hit-wonder.
(I believe the 6th sense probably was extensively re-written by an unnamed author, because it reminds me of Lucas' Star Wars Legacy: The best Star Wars were the ones extensively re-written by others).
Either way, I no longer want to hear of Shyamalan and his worthless 'film projects'.
Enough is enough. He has been given too many chances already. Time to get the ticket out and ship him back to the slums.
The money poured/invested into this hack is making me depressed. He is a slightly overpriced Uwe Boll and that's all he ever will be.
And this Airbender will DEFINITELY flop.

To me.

He does what he wants. You don't. Deal with it.
-
Like Shyamalan is hard to say? C'mon, you guys deal with more complicated names in your D&D and Warcraft campaigns... Im sure Shyamalan isn't THAT strange a name for you all to encounter...
-
have never seen it. Hated Night's last two movies with a passion. Yet...yet somehow im interested in this. It sound like a really cool concept, and it will be damn interesting to see if an Night can make a movie like this that is so different frpm the formula that he has stuck with for years now...

Did someone say WEE-A-BOO?!?
-
Quite explicitly noted as the THIRD AGE OF OUR WORLD. Not to mention, intended as English mythology by Tolkien. Pretty sure it was intended as Earth.
Geek nitpicking aside, I think what made it a story you could identify with was the feeling that you were watching Asian mythology of sorts.
It's too bad they didn't cast my friends kid. Hes half-Asian, half white and looks EXACTLY like Ang (something many people say). Just as well since he's never acted. -
Perhaps the keystone to this endeavor (whomever is cast as Aang) should be someone half-asian and half-white.
-
... Look just like how the character is drawn! I knew a family of half-Japanese Americans who met in Hawaii (at a Mormon school too, how's that for a strange set of circumstances) in high school who would look the part now. When I was 18, they had a younger brother who was probably 4 at the time. Had he pursued martial arts and looked anything like his siblings, he'd be a great Aang. And his older sister was hot back then too. Man I miss her as a friend.
-
I don't mean to be obtuse but could you tell me on what page of which book of The Lord Of The Rings it says "Third Age of our world".
And I mean in the actual text of The Lord Of The Rings, not the Appendices or anything else. Just the fictional story. I always thought it said the "Third Age of Middle Earth", which is a fictional world as far as the story is concerned.
I'm just trying to establish if Tolkien's intentions were reflected in the actual story text, and not just as side notes. Then that would be the same as the people who made Avatar, as they never say the Avatar world is Earth in the story, only in side notes to they say that it is Earth/Asian inspired. -
Definitely in the movies, I think (can anyone confirm?), but I don't know about the books. I feel like that was mentioned in the last movie, though...
-
I think the Fourth Age is when our world starts. LOTR's 3rd Age ends when Sauron is destroyed. Let me trade in my geek card now...
-
it's likely spoken by a character that lives in middle earth and therefore refers to it as our world. It's made up, just look at the maps.
-
shut up man you giving me a headache.
-
I don't know what fantasy land you're living in but u didn't disprove me wrong in anything. The ethnicities of LOTR the book or the movie are all interpretations of clues given in the book. YOu even stated yourself the nationalities or race are never outright said. I was stating the producers of the movie and most everyone else can logically assume they are all white (meaning the main cast). YOu even admitted this yourself. So you still haven't told me how it's different in Avatar? I find your idiocy amusing because you stated to me earlier that you never said Asians have to have to be drawn with squinty eyes or dark skin yet now you just stated you think the characters look more half Asian. So you could infer you mean they don't look full Asian. Why? cause they don't have squinty eyes? so which is it? and switching to your other account (geraldbeans) to pat yourself in the back is pathetic dude. I believe myself and several people on here have shown your idiocy. Plus man you're posting on here like every other minute...dude it's a holiday weekend....go out have some fun...anyway I will thank you for your wish of luck at the tables...which I did...
-
the constant posts, the whacked out logic, the fucked up point of view...DVADER are you trying to be the new Dannyglover's Dickblood. Is that it? Are you hoping to be such as Asshole you can get recognized like that dude. You say you don't want to make enemies but on this Talkback alone you've made a couple....lmao...good luck with that.
-
I can tell we are all getting on each other's nerves here. Sitting here this morning eating my breakfast and getting ready to leave my short vacation I realized something. I am very adamant on this subject because I was fearing this movie would be huge and spread the idea of yellowface to a new generation of kids.(whether you people believe it will or not is not the point anymore). After looking at the picture and looking up the box office receipts for Dragonball and Streetfighter: Chun Li, this entire argument may be moot. Instead of fanning the flames I'm thinking I may have to leave it alone and let it die the miserable death it deserves....anyway gotta check out and catch a plane....have a great memorial day guys...get out and do something...talk to you tomorrow.

M night shamalayan is a failure.

That's a super power I'm ready to sign up for.

they fart at great speeds.

I had a set tour from a friend at the Philadelphia naval yard where this set was built. They were still constructing it when I sent it to quint, so no filming was taking place at the time. There was green screen around the whole top of the set, possibly for bigger buildings and a sky to be put in by CGI.
-
im gonna fuck ur mom for your insolence. SHAMALYAMAN!!
-
Hey, good job there buddy. I try to end the feud but you go right on ahead insulting me, just like you have from the beginning. I bet you're just an absolute joy to talk to in person, aren't you? Now, do I have to quote you again? "If there is more to middle earth in LOTR then why were they all WHITE" Again, I've shown why you're wrong, and if you read, you'll see that one of the races I used as an example is described as having "black skin". That doesn't sound like a Mediterranean to me. Again, you lose that argument. And once again, you misattribute something to me. Good lord, is it that hard for you to stay on topic? Are you ADHD or something; can you not pay attention? "you stated to me earlier that you never said Asians have to have to be drawn with squinty eyes or dark skin" Uhh, no. Never said that either. Your debate skills are terrible because you always resort to insults and assumptions about your opponent. I can't find a better example than when you accused me of being geraldbeans (?). Dude, I've been here for years, I have no need for alter-egos. But I guess its hard for you to believe that someone else thinks you've been proven wrong. And, if you really want to win an argument, try not to make assumptions about that anonymous person on the other side of the screen. I was here posting all night because I was up until 4 am exporting video for work, and I had nothing better to do in the meantime. But all that's beside the point. Resorting to that kind of argument just means you have nothing left. And dude, if you had half the brain DannyGlovers_Dickblood does, you might not look so foolish on here.
-
I guess if the main character doesn't have a full mane, the Paris Hilton worshiper teen girls will not like it and will not watch then movie. It's all about the pussy, right? And God frobid a movie not been made by having to please and kiss the ass of such type of pussy, the Paris Hilton worshiper teen girls retards.
-
Into necrophilia are you?
-
are all your moms dead? its like I cant fuck anybody's mother at all here. rsdigi, do you have a sister?
-
Thanks for the backup on that D. Vader. My point with the Booboo links was that there's at least ONE well-known kid actor out there in Hollywoodland who could've played Aang with his ("Asian") eyes closed. He CAN act (despite his presence in some pretty crummy projects, he elevates his material a little bit). But Hollywood goes for someone unknown who's white over an Asian kid who can act, do martial arts and resembles Aang as I think he's intended to look based on the culture of the world he's in ... yay, Hollywood. Go, racebending! The movie has that fake-y look of 90s productions that were too-literal interpretations of comic books (CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE PUNISHER - Lundgren edition).
-
I do feel like Aribenders ought to be Chinese buddhists, and as for the fire Nation, I do dig the idea that they should be Indian... seems to fit, as for Aang or however you spell it, I'm fine with him being a bald white guy... they can work it in as him being the only white guy among all the other little asian airbenders and thus along with him being the next reincarnation of the avatar work it in the story of him standing out from the others and being different and a bit of an 'outcast' who tries to fit in with all his differences which enivitably adds to his insecurity and causes him to run away from home before the airbender nation goes tits up and he's lost at sea. The water tribe can be eskimoes, and the rock nation can be black people. White people are scattered throughout here and there. Everybody wins! If they're gonna recast and shit at least try to work it into the story without being just for the reason of 'too foreign for American audiences' which is an excuse that doesn't fly because I'm pretty fucking sure even teh most inbred racist redneck in America buys into the idea of asian people doing martial arts shit and Indian people shooting fire out of their mouth. In fact the more I think about it, the stereotypes work out great!
-
...they reveal themselves to be.....CRAAAAAB PEOPLE, CRAAAAB PEOPLE..
-
Who said this was based on any sort of reality? Ohhh wait, I remember reading about the fire nation in my world history book.....You asshats. Oh and if you go over to CNN they have just uncovered the remains of a sky bison in a glacier....you "STOOPID" ASSHATS!!
What next Katara isn't a fucking Eskimo?!? Daaaamn some of you people...it's ok to let go once in a while, movies can be purely based on imagination. I know the Matrix kinda mixed that all up for some of you but it's ok. Ang doesn't have to be asian. (palmface) -
If they didn't want Aang to be Asian, he should not be dressed up as a Tibetan monk, dammit. The Caucaisan kids playing Katara and Sokka shouldn't be living in Inuit huts and paddling around in kayaks. You can't have it both ways.
-
M. Night is intentionally changing things up a bit from the show. Kind of like how Shyamalan said if he ever did a Harry Potter flick, he'd want to have the freedom to make it his own.
The movie is actually aiming for a MORE ethnically diverse cast than the show. Every nation/tribe (fire, water, earth, etc) will be treated as different ethnic countries in the film. For example the character from the Earth kingdom look like the more traditional Asians on the cartoon. The Fire Nation is made up of actors that are Indian, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern.
It strikes me that some of the casting criticism, particularly those calling the filmmakers' racist, are unfounded. I hope so anyway.
Supposedly a teaser trailer is going to be attached to Transformers 2. Maybe that will be a good indicator of what the movie will be like. -

More diversity's great, but it doesn't explain why they're making up the Caucasian kids to look like Tibetans and Inuits. And it doesn't explain why the good guys have to be white.
-
Yeah, I get what you're saying. But remember, they're NOT Tibetans or Inuits, despite the obvious influence on the show. The main characters (save for Aang) are from the Water Nation. Granted, I'm by no means an insider on this film's production. But I'd guess that the Water Tribe is made up of caucasians in this movie, just like every other fantasy nation will have it's own race and culture.

Excuse my multiple posts.
-
fuck your multiple orgasms.
-
funniest shit ever. "WOOOOOSH! it's the wind! run!!"
-
Like Dragonball the movie.
-
All this for a nicktoons movie... I'm moving to Bollywood.
-
When I told my two nippers that the film I couldn't wait to see was AVATAR (Cameron's flick, natch) they both shouted, "Woah, it's about time they made Last Airbender into a movie". Obviously, being 40, I didn't have a clue what they were talking about. All those kids around the world collecting those fucking trading cards, well, that's the audience this is aimed at. Have you any idea how many kids know about this shit..? I predict this film will be massive and, with worldwide gross/DVD/merchandise sales already into the billions, this might just knock Cameron's Avatar into a cocked hat.
-
Parents won't want to take their kids ... because the tone of martial arts will seem FAR too "Asian" for the average moviegoing American audience. They'd have to make it WHITER to truly appeal to the masses. "Aw, honey, you don't want to go to that ... all those mouths that don't match the words and flying around on wires?"
-
Good thing someone offered Samuel Jackson a movie role because if they hadn't he would been played the kid!
-
I think I'll avoid the issue of the character's ethnicity and simply say that the set photos look interesting. I'm certainly willing to give M Knight another chance. I'll reserve all judgement until the film is released and I have a chance to see it.
-
The kid looks somewhat Asian. Perhaps adopted? I'll give Dev the benefit of the doubt. He could indeed be Zuko. Looking forward to seeing what Katara and Sokka look like.
Actually, it should be cool to see the next chapter. That's the one where everything came together. Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee were perfect villians, and Toph simply ruled the world! I'll watch the first one in hopes N. Night will keep going. Or at leadt SOMEONE will keep it going. -
"they're NOT Tibetans or Inuits, despite the obvious influence on the show."
Well they're doing their damnedest to pretend they are. Let me put this another way. If they're not Asian, why aren't they Hispanic or black or something closer? How the hell do you default all those characters to Caucasian?
-
It is possible that the actors got their roles based of their auditions. It could be that they just cast the best actors for the part.
At least give the filmmakers the benefit of a doubt. -
They kinda lost that when they tried casting Jesse McCartney as Zuko. And the best actors for the part? Dear god, you're naive.
-
I dunno about the famous scar, yet. Perhaps CGI? We'll see how the rest plays out. Looking WAY forward to more pics!
