Garrett looks at PLUNKETT & MCLEANE
Boy I swear, I saw this movie back almost a year ago, and ya know... I seem to remember it as being not half bad. Some moderate laughs and a bit of fun... But... I might be delusional. Here's Garret's look...
Before I made my way into the dark halls of the nearby movie temple I saw
a short description of Plunkett & Macleane and thought to my self that this
could be a rather interesting pic.
Since I am a master thief it was an easy task for me to sneak into this
Austrian preview (ah...nice little word game for my German speaking fellows) and
instead of seeing another bullshit movie like last week (message in a bottle)
the gods smiled at me. At least that's what I thought. but they never smile at
me. They grin.
Plunkett and Macleane are two men at the bottom of their lives. They team up
together to rob the bad and...keep it. Just my taste of character to be honest.
James Macleane (Jonny Lee Miller) has the connections to the high society and
Mr. Plunkett (Robert Carlyle), a former druggist that turned into a thief, has
the criminal skills to get the 'redundant' money of the aristocrats. But of course
there are some problems. One in form of Ken Scott (not bad. nothing more) and
the other in form of a goddess - Liv Tyler (now is this a sexy mouth or what...).
Nothing more to spoil. It would take one single sentence to tell you the rest
of this weak story. And it would be a rather short sentence. The script combined
with the great actors has so much potential and fairly uses it. Jake "I normally
do music videos but my brothers seem to earn more money" Scot really screwed it
up. To catch the look of the 17th century London they shot the movie in Prague
and it really works out well. Also the music is surprisingly good although it
is modern (sometimes techno) music. I have to admit that my impression of the
movie was also influenced by those stupid idiots who managed to kill the reel
in the middle of the best scene and then cut about 2 minutes out.
What Ken Scot intended to do was a modern movie set back in the 17th century. But
with all those missed opportunities it's just an average and self important movie
that wants to be cool.
regards,
Garrett.

but Jake Scott is not a Scott brother, but instead the son of Ridley. Hence Plunkett and Macleane looks nice, but is, in fact, crap...like most of Ridley's output (cue lots of snarling, gnashing, and wailing of teeth from irate Scott fans). Really, with the possible exception of Alien, Blade Runner and Thelma And Louise, his films are self-indulgent, overblown and overlong...just like Plunkett and Macleane, which came out in the UK some months ago. The anachronistic use of dance music and MTV visuals must have seemed like a good idea at the time, but they just don't work...in my opinion. Anyway, the Scott family all have talent - that is undeniable. They just seem to be able to obscure it with their visual pyrotechnics...ah, well perhaps Gladiator will put Ridley back on the map, and Jake will pull something out of the bag on his next feature. Tony is the exception to all this: the man's made Enemy of the State, Crimson Tide and The Last Boy Scout! Hurrah! keep it up, Tone! Oh, and can we please forget The Fan, beverly Hills Cop 2 and Top Gun, please? Thank you...

I've got to say I was well disappointed with this movie when I saw it. Poor old Liv Tyler got nothing to do in the whole movie - and yes I know Women's Lib wasn't very active in 17th Century Britain, but there's still no excuse. Bobby Caryle tired to shine through the predictable plot, but never quite made it. Garrett is right, this was defo Pop video terrority - it looked great but never really held my attention... and maybe it's just me, but why bother with the costume if the language is going to flow like the 1990s. I know it's a stylistic point, but the swearing seemed a touch gratitious - perhaps just there to pick up Caryle's post-Trainspotting fans?

harry's right, if you ask me (sorry Libby). its not a great film by any stretch of the imagination. But it passes the time pleasantly enough and the chemistry between the two Trainspotting alumni is good. A few laughs to be had for sure....and what's the deal with the "I'm first, no I am, ok I'm second" stuff. Go out and buy yourself a life. sheesh.

This film is a load of shit. Repeat after me: A LOAD OF SHIT.
But what do I care? I have tickets to the first UK screening of The Blair Witch Project on Aug. 21st! Is it any good? HA! HA! HA!

Jake Scott isn't the brother of Tony and Ridley, hes actually ridleys son !

Just for future reference..Don't be puttin no techo/jungle/house music as a score for a period
piece! You better have a damn good angle to pull that off. Look at 13 warrior trailer. They use that damn cliche looped sample breakbeat w/gregorian chants wackness and it plays like SH*T!! -
but after a while, I realized it had no substance. Fortunately though, I got to see it when I was vacationing in Ireland over last spring break. I was wondering when it was going to come out over in the states... and after a while I had completely forgotten about it. Until now! When I saw it on AICN! And I thought, "hey, here's my chance to 'talkback'" because I've always wanted to, but never really had anything good to say. And... I still don't!! But, I can say that the movie was very visually and aurally pleasing. I loved the sountrack.. the way they mixed classical music (set in classical times) with modern techno music, and made the dance scenes go along with the modern music. And I thought a lot of the dialogue was clever. Yep. But overall, it didn't hold much substance, but I WOULD gladly see it again, given the chance. The end.

Man! PLUNKETT & MACLEANE is a real misfire. Great trailer, terrible mish-mash of a movie.
It starts in darkness and you haven't a clue what's going on. It clunks forward without plot, direction or anything. Liv Tyler, usually so sweet, is wood. And then, just when it couldn't get any worse, it has the most tiresome and tacky climax and god, how we all yawned. Totally vamooshed here in England. Don't know anyone who thought it was much kop at all. Big shame, seeing as Jonny Lee and Robbie C usually rock. -

by spyderman
Just what exactly does the PantingMenace know about film? All Ridley made that was any good, was Alien, Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise. Fuck, that just happens to be three of the most important films of our generation! And even mentioning Tony, and forgetting to mention that he made True Romance is a crime. Enemy of the State ? - C'mon, let's talk film, whaddayasay?! Jake (not Ken, by the way) did what he does best, and it was entertaining. The "ball" scene was the best, and made me buy the soundtrack. Look - film is both visual and audio, and Jake definitely got one of these right, and his visual skills is not too bad. Remember, it's his first film. Just a last word: to all the critics, I agree - technically and plotwise the film isn't great, but hey, let's sit back, relax and enjoy the whole movie experience and take all the good stuff from what we pay to enjoy.

Just saw P&M last night on Video with my other half, and we both enjoyed it. Okay, so the plot was predictable, but we both thought that it served up a good evenings entertainment. Had I seen it on the big screen, I would not have been disappointed. As for the sound track, I enjoyed it. I am not a fan of this new fangled techno stuff, but I found nothing music wise in this film to not like.
It's easy to criticise, but to me a film like this works if you feel you have been entertained. We were, and better still, it is British. (Now someone is going to tell me it was made with US money or something!!!)
