A further look at A CHRISTMAS CAROL with Zemeckis, Jim Carrey and apparently not that To Catch a Predator guy...

Published at:  May 21, 2009 1:45:35 AM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Robert Zemeckis' A CHRISTMAS CAROL just got very interesting to me. That bit of footage that was shown the other day... didn't quite capture my imagination, but here... with the video linked below, I'm in. I love Zemeckis' claim that this is the greatest Time Travel story ever written. I like the look of the characters and world. I think they're doing an interesting job. What do you think?

...especially THE POLAR EXPRESS. Thought it was a really wonderful Christmas movie and an amazing visual experience. I still remember those wolves in the snow and the train gliding across the ice. I also liked the musical numbers. A CHRISTMAS CAROL is perfect material for Zemeckis. Jim Carrey will be awesome in this.

    by almega

...how many times can "A Christmas Carol" be retold? Will, one day, someone get it so perfect that everyone else that is ambitious with other people's stories just give up and say "fine, its done"? Obviously, it can be told via many different interpretations, but wow... I've seen more than two handfuls in my lifetime. I'm not bitching... I'm just really curious about why this attracts so many producers (besides the original story being brilliant).

    Here's An Observance...

    by the true pinback

I think it's time Robert Zemeckis do one of two things. Either stop making all these motion capture CGI chunks and get back to REAL live-action filmmaking, or go crawl under a rock somewhere and baskin the glories of your past achievedments. These motion capture movies Zemeckis has done have gone from being semi-cool (BEOWULF) to utter crapola (THE POLAR EXPRESS). He's not proving anything to anyone except how narrow his parameters have gotten. Come on, Zemeckis, you're capable of SO MUCH BETTER than this. Drop the computer and pick up a camera, for Christ's sake!

    by the true pinback

Yeah...the man does have some acting ability. Problem is, the stuff where he shows his acting juice doesn't make any money. The public-at-large seems to ONLY want to see Carrey in mega-stupid comedies wher he does the same shtick over and over ad infinitum. Hiding behind motion/performance capture isn't going to change that. If he wants to do funny voices, maybe he needs to get into doing voice-over for Nickleodeon junk.

    by drewlicious

Motion capture has almost limitless possibilities since it's basically the worlds best makeup. In animation they just need to fix that whole "uncanny valley" problem. We're already seeing the benefits in live action, Davey Jones is a good example. I seriously thought that was mostly prosthetics at first.

    drew your post was bizarre!

    by white_vader

No offence dude, but you're saying mocap is makeup (look at your first sentence)? No, mocap is - motion capture. Fancypants tracking of many elements of a live performance. That's separate from what they translate it to. Could be old Brad Pitt, could be a penguin. Which of course is exactly the point of it. Conversely, the same "digital prosthetics" can be completely hand-animated if you want (if you've got an infinite amount of time).

And that was the other weird part of your post. Whether it's rendered photorealistically to match a live-action background (BB, Pirates, Kong, Gollum) or a more stylised implementation and surroundings (Happy Feet, Monster House, Beowulf), it's all the same stuff - cg model with movement driven by mocap data (and much more hand-tweaking than they like to admit). Only the level of detail and rendering changes.

And the whole reason for that cg 'makeup' is what makeup Genius Rick Baker has been saying for aeons: Prosthetics can only ADD to the mass of a face, they can't take away. CG lets you gouge away. Unless it's Beowulf and you just end up adding some crow's feet (rolls eyes) thus defeating the point!

I'm not saying mocap is evil OR cg or oldschool prosthetics, I just wanted to clarify because you got a bit mixed up with your terms. Pirates used CG well because they did things like lop Jones' nose off (and in Harry Potter that's pretty much ALL they did to the bad guy but it's effective), have the Hammerhead guy's eyes so close to the top of the head it couldn't be guy-in-suit etc etc. Then there's stupid stuff like U.S. Godzilla where even though thy CGd it the design's proportions were achievable by a guy in a suit (and stuff on the bridge was even done that way) and worse still they didn't really utilise the design's big-arse arms anyway...

So just to clarify I'm not lording it over you, just trying to help out with some clarification. Hope it comes through with the right intention. Cheers man!

    by togmeister

That's what i heard here a while ago. Marty and the Doc returning to the Zemeckis fold would have me geeking out all over. Oh, and as for "Zemeckis, get back to real moviemaking, not this creepy faux-world. Put toys down and get back to real actors ACTING and telling a story".... well, Beowulf actually had the best performances that Anthony Hopkins and John Malkovich have given in some considerable time. On the Blu-Rays of Beowulf and Polar Express, you can see the original mo-cap performances side by side with the end product - it's uncanny how much of the actor's performance and movement is retained. Bob Z should ignore the Luddite movement and keep blazing his trail....
