NBC Gives CHUCK A Third Season!!

Published at:  May 17, 2009 6:45:19 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

The Hollywood Reporter’s James Hibberd reports that NBC's secret-agent comedy “Chuck,” now with kung-fu grip, will be back for a third season.

The series, co-created by “O.C.” mastermind Josh Schwartz, reportedly had to endure big budget cuts before NBC would grant the order. (Hopefully they’ll lay off some of the Buy More staff before Adam Baldwin.)

NBC announces its 2009-2010 schedule Tuesday.

Find all of Hibberd’s story on the matter here.

Startled by the sudden exertion, they slowly ease themselves into their gamer chairs and pop open a Pepsi. I guess I supported this show without knowing it, cause I bought something at Subway during that time.

    by seanny_d

I really like the show, and am glad to see it coming back, even if it is only a 13-episode order. In fact, I think the new trend for television shows should be 13-episode seasons as to keep the quality high and the filler low. And scnjedi, I completely agree with you about Scrubs. It ended in a satisfactory manner and had a fitting series finale, and now it continues? So bizarre. I get that they want to turn it into a comedy ER, with ever revolving doctors, but this just seems like too much.

And I am a huge scrubs fan and tho I would love it to go on eternally, I think its time to wrap it up and finalize the series (final ep of this season did a pretty decent job)...

I love Chuck but the problem that I fear that the show now has is the failure to suspend reality whenever Chuck goes all Neo like and kicks ass. It was so painfully obvious that was not Chuck laying the smack down on Fulcrum. I fear that this is gonna appear even episode of the 3rd season...

    by ravex

keep kung fu stuff. if you have to mess with it, make it not 100% reliable after couple of episodes, but do not go back to chuck as dead weight.
lose the buy more. it had its story told. it moved on. have morgan and co. drop in every couple of episodes as guest stars. have them be in trouble with mob/columbian drug cartel/KGB/whatever, and chuck has to help them. casey and sarah try to stop him at first, but end up helping him.
use captain awesome more now that he knows chuck's secret. have him go around trying to keep it away from his wife. maybe, sometime in the mid-season, have him do some spy stuff as well: the irony of ellie being the only one in the family not knowing, and trying to figure out what are all of them up to has potential.
make more stand alone episodes at the beginning of the season. we had a MAJOR gamechanger, let them run with the new status quo for a while (make episodes with similar set ups as those in season 1, just that now chuck can take good care of himself without any help from his handlers. thus making room for more casey's "chuck me" comments) before starting a new big story arc.
and finally, bring dean stockwell on board. QL reunion FTW!

You can thank - or blame - Fox for this. Truthfully, once Dollhouse was renewed, it was academic that Chuck would be renewed. Even if it simply didn't cut it, and if it were on any other network other than the train wreck that is NBC, it would've been cancelled. So they'll get their 13 episodes, and then be cancelled at the end of it as they get their heads handed to them by Ghost Whisperer.

    by chrth

They're execs. They're hired to make money. Survivor makes money, so they can afford to give the winner a million. Chuck doesn't make money, which means to come back they have to cut costs. Execs aren't hired to bring quality to TV. They're hired to bring money to stakeholders.

What the writers need to do is make his new found skills into a burden, activating only for perceived threats to Chuck, at times, almost insidiously, failing to activate when Chuck would like them to. That would be the most interesting angle.

Jeff: Does it shock you that 80% of my encounters with women have been completely without their knowledge?

Chuck: Honestly, I'm more surprised by the other 20%

    Buy More Crew:
Emmett: Friends... (giggles) I wish people in our line of work could afford friends. That's just one of the sacrifices of upper management!

(He giggles and spins in his chair)

Morgan: Yeah well, Big Mike is my friend, and I never would have betrayed him if you hadn't tricked me.

It's like the studios are going into "geek defense" mode.

    by amy chasing

They're trying to shut us up or something. Think about it... with Chuck, Better Off Ted, Castle, Dollhouse, Fringe, hopefully Supernatural, and even Lie To Me and Scrubs coming back, all our cries that the studios are run by intellectually disabled gerbils are undermined! How dare they renew shows we like! Don't they know this goes against the whole geek-audience/studio-bureaucracy relationship?!

To quote Admiral Ackbar: "It's a trap!"... they must be trying to lull us into a false sense of security and then when we least expect it, BLAM!, it'll be Big Brother, ____ Idol, ____ Got Talent, Survivor, Hell's Kitchen, Biggest Loser and Fox News on all channels 24/7, and all speculative fiction shows will be pushed onto the graveyard timeslot and lose all their funding... And all be run by Tim fucking Kring.

    It's the only possible answer.

    by amy chasing

that the writers have so far shown that they know what they have. So unless they all get taken over by body-snatchers, I'm relatively confident they'll be able to script a decent end to the show, even with the recent character changes. As long as they go into season 3 with the same instincts and enthusiasm as they did with season 2, it'll be cool.

    by stlost

but worried about the budget cuts as well. I actually liked the Buy More plots, and would hate to see it go.

With the way NBC has been holding Chuck ransom, I have a feeling it will even have a harder battle trying to get a 4th season. Maybe they should plan the major arc for season 3 to be the series finale. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the show continue, but I don't want to see them constantly having to worry about if it is the season or series finale every year. I'd like to see Chuck go out on a high note.

At least with Reaper going we'll still have one show about a disaffected 25-30 person who hates his dead end job and prospectless life (although the show has been moving away from that a bit which is a shame).

I'm not a big fan of the budget cuts, or the expected timeslot, but more Chuck is better than no Chuck.

I can't help but wonder if moving the show to Friday is going to have much of an effect, since the show gets such a major boost from time-shifting (Hulu, TiVo, etc.) viewers?

If it had been on HBO or Showtime it might have had a decent shot at not sucking, but being relegated to network television there is absolutely no way anyone could have possibly prevented it from being a steaming pile of shit. As it happens, it actually WAS a steaming pile of shit. Thank Science we don't have it wasting precious airtime any more.

    Budget cuts...

    by majereuk

...worry me. I'd guess that with those, we're looking at less location filming and more pre-built set work, which would translate as more Buy More and Chez Chuck action, and less spy-related derring do. Now I quite enjoy the Buy More stuff (only seen Season 1 here though), but I fear that if the balance slips too far that way, the ratings will drop and the Chuck-haters at the network will get the excuse they want.
Ah well, at least I've got a couple more seasons to look forward to- here's hoping they at least get enough warning to wrap things up before the drophammer hits home.

Love the show. Just learned my wife is pregnant. Here's the connection. Our top baby names are Charles for a boy and Eleanor for a girl. Not necessarily trying to pay tribute to the show. But we're such big fans, it must have seeped into our subconsciousness.

No problem. My fault for not looking at the greater context. So with the budget cuts, I see the Buy More crew pretty much disappearing, if not cut to the bone. Ellie and Awesome were already part-timers this year. I do hope they can keep the string of guest stars, which often made it a little more fun.

Easily done. The Flat format in talkbacks makes it hard to follow a logical discussion, especially if there's a few days gap between posts.

That said, I think we'll be stuck in Buy More for longer, as a cut budget implies less money to spend on high tech gadgets, spy cameras, stunts, etc... All the stuff that would make Neo-Chuck cool to watch.

Probably no Scott Bakula either. The dude is probably expensive as hell to hire.
