It's literally been years since I've watched an episode of SNL. Reason being-Ferrell left and there wasn't any reason to tune in. Huh. Maybe I'll watch, just maybe.

The trailers for Land of the Lost make me laugh, every time.

Will Ferell is rarely at his game as well as he is on the stage at Saturday Night Live. I hope for sketches to include the lovers, the high school singers, and of course, Jeopardy.

    Current SNL Cast Definitively Rated

    by behemoth

    Fred Armisen
I go back and forth on this guy. He's done some absolutely amazing impressions (Prince) and is a very unique performer at times with original ideas. Then we get the absolute worst Obama impression in recorded history, like he's not even trying. And did Lawrence Welk have an accent? I don't think so. Worth keeping, but needs to step it up or step DOWN from the Obama post.
    Will Forte
Absolute original. Really brings some great ideas to the show, but sadly, they keep milking the teat of his worst stuff (MacGruber is real, real haggard). But he's been responsible for my biggest SNL laughs during his time on the show. The rock band sketch with Scarlett Johansson a few years back, the guy that only sings about beer jars and Model T's. Great stuff. Need to use him more and allow him to develop some new material/characters.
    Bill Hader
A worthy heir to Hammond. Can do incredible impressions, as well as unique ones (Vincent Price). Just has one of those faces that make you ready to laugh almost immediately. Usually brings up the quality a notch on every sketch he's in.
    Darrell Hammond
Was great in the Farrell/Oteri era, but is past his time here. Needs to leave. Brought great things to the show, but has worn out his welcome.
    Seth Myers
His brother was infinitely funnier when he was with MadTV. I never liked Myers at all. In contrast to Hader, Myers has a face that makes me want to administer a James Caan,Godfather I, trash can involved, monster beating. But I will say this. He's done a decent job on Update and seems to be best suited there rather than as a sketch performer. I just think Update was far funnier with Amy there to help him along. But I'm OK with him continuing on Update.
    Andy Samberg
WIthout his "shorts," I'd be calling for this guy's immediate firing. But those shorts are usually fantastic, every time. He brings basically nothing to the show in the sketches, but his digital shorts have been one of the few crowning achievements of this era of the show, producing pretty much the only moments that are worth going back to.
    Jason Sudeikis
Good, solid sketch guy. Pretty funny, can handle a lot of different roles, reliable, great straight man. Probably will never be a "best of Jason Sudeikis" DVD in the future, but he's a solid presence on the show.
    Kenan Thompson
Absolutely ABYSMAL. Brings nothing but crickets to every sketch he's in. Mind boggling that this guy is still on the show. TIVO was invented for this pantload.
    Kristen Wiig
Obviously brings the most to the table of any of the cast members. Can basically do it all. One of the most original performers to hit the show in a long time. A bit overused, though. Makes a really interesting foil for Forte's stuff.
    Abby Elliot
The ONLY new member worth keeping. Adorable, for one thing. And, the first person I've ever seen impersonate Angelina. And she does it incredibly well. But, she needs to show that she can do more than that. I really don't know what her potential is, but I loved her dad, so hopefully that gene has carried over. Would love to see her role increase.
    Bobby Moynihan
Again, a "scratch your head" hiring. Guy brings NOTHING to the show whatsoever. Every character he's ever done has simply been grating, annoying, and bowel-movement inducing. I truly despise this guy on the show. My absolute least favorite SNL cast member. Belongs on the "Charlie Rocket" era of the show. Would've been terrible there, too.
    Michaela Watkins
Like Moynihan, horrible. Neither of these two should be back. Why bother? They're barely used as it is. She has one character, the "Bitch, please" abomination. The lack of funny in that character could power a small moon ... or a space station. Again, she reminds me of those horrible, horrible C-grade members of the late 80s era casts.
    Casey Wilson
Tries way too hard, has never produced anything more than a muffled chuckle in her two years on the show, and maybe only one of those. She has nothing. No characters, nothing interesting to add ... buh-bye.
And that's it. A decent foundation to build on, but need to cut away a lot of the new and spoiled meat, realize where their strengths lie and write a sketch where Abby Elliot shows her ass. Only then can the show return to the glory days of yesteryore.

    Good ratings, Behemoth...

    by thrillho77

Only 2 things I disagree with:

Michaela Watkins has already done a decent handful of impressions and all of them were pretty solid. I think there's a place for her here. She's definitely not on the bottom tier with Moynihan, Kenan, and Carey Wilson.

And I think WU has been better without Poehler. I feel like the audience really "liked" Amy, but the audience laughter to her Update jokes did not corroborate with this. My impression has been that Amy actually killed momentum that Seth had with his jokes and once she was gone, Seth could just go and go and go.

I think Seth is suited only for weekend update and his Anderson Cooper impression, but I think he's been underrated as the Head Writer on SNL. He's largely responsible for the quality of SNL coming way back up after its transitional lull from Tina Fey to him.

    by smackfu

don't get me wrong, I've always liked Darrell and his impressions are fantastic, but SNL has made a very obvious transition with this new cast from traditional humor to absurd and surreal humor. Hammond is old school and doesn't do absurd and surreal, so he kind of clashes with most of their sketches. But I do love the new direction, it's the first time since the Hartman, Myers Farley days that I actually make a point to watch or record SNL. And yeah, sorry but Keenan really is dead weight, probably the least talented person I've ever seen on a sketch comedy show. Every single character he does is basically just...Keenan... doing the same voice, over-pronouncing words and looking bewildered.

    by indyabbey jones

    1. The shout out to Darrel hammond at the end, made it seem like he was hanging it up after last night, but it just left questions opend, if it was a sendoff that's terrible as it wasn't clear enough, and if it was just a shout out it shound't have been so singled out making it look like he's leaving...i personally hope he's back next year he's one of the few cast members who isn't shoved in our faces every sketch and he's always funny when used.2. Why was there no send off to Don Pardo?...this guy has been with the show for 33 years (all except season 7 i believe, they should have droped the commercial rerun and shortend weekend update so that the very last sketch could have been a nice tribute to the voice of SNL since the beggining...losy opportunity oif you ask meother then that, i thought this episode was great my only complaints where the reused commercial (why not just make a new one instead of recycling a decade old one) and weekend update felt unorganized, like everyone was just there yelling and no one planed how it would go..harry carry was funny though
Best sketch of the night was jeopardy and "Goodnight Saigon" was absolutley hillarious, SNL needs to remember thats how you to a musical number..it was well performed and funny, but not goofy at the same time...plus who wants to bed that song starts popping up on the ipod charts...great song that most people forgot about

Time to dump most of the cast

    by cant_stop_yawning2

It would be nice to see SNL do something daring and just get rid of a bunch of the dead weight.

Abby Elliot might be funny, but she hasn't been in much of anything; still she has the right pedigree (Chris Elliot) and she is cute, so keep her.

The rest of the newbies should go - they have had the spotlight enough times to establish that they aren't funny enough - I can't even remember their names and one of them is really hard to look at.

as for the old-timers; someone please show hammond the door - i mean he has been on there for decades now.

keep hader and wig as long as you can, but don't expect to keep them long because they are in every other movie coming out lately and clearly headed for shows of their own, if not bigger things. (oh, and please get wig to ditch the kathy lee thing - it is more played out than the target lady).

samberg has never done it for me, but the iran short with armisen and his wahlberg was reason enough to keep him around.

DUMP KEENAN - HE HAS NEVER BEEN FUNNY.

Myers too should go - he is either the straight guy or the news guy and neither are that funny. i miss really? w/ seth and amy, but that is it.

armisen and forte are hard calls because they are so weird and occasionally amusing you want to see what they will do next, but they need some new/better material. and i don't want to see forte do another weird-ass prolonged singing sketch ever again. he can be really exhausting.

i think that only leaves sudekas and if you think about it, he is solid but almost always the straight guy in the sketch. he is kind of a blank spot on the show. shouldn't he have some characters by now?

She's not a sketch writer, apparently, and the most successful performers on SNL are those who can write their own stuff, but she is the latest in a long line of straight women (Jane Curtin) who establish a frame of reference for the Gilda Radner-Kristen Wiig types. Same for Jason Sudeikis. Not especially funny but he can act his ass off when he wants to. Plus, Casey's the most shaggable girl on the show right now (ohhhh yeaaaaaah, I like meat with my taters!)

Far as I'm concerned, they could dump Forte (tired), Moynihan (who?) and Watkins (deserves more time) and not skip a beat.

As for Forte's "Beer jar" sketches, yeah, I find them hilarious. They are so insane that it boggles my mind that someone would write that AND get others to go along with the ideas. I mean, come on...a balding, mulleted Forte singing about the Easter Bunny being massacred with the lines, "the hopper has become the hopped upon!" and then literally screaming until it looks like he's going to pass out? That is comedy gold to me.

    about Wiig...

    by bizarrojerry

She really has to stop with these repetitive speech tick characters. I've liked some stuff she does, but must every Kathy Lee line end with the same chuckle and facial expression? Too many characters she does are just repetitive silly voices! Branch out, dammit!

    Wiig, voice gimmicks

    by skimn

The Aunt critic's "Oh Geeeeeez..", the Terget lady, etc. I have to give her kudos for the mile-a-second "just kidding" character, her vocal delivery IS amazing. But I prefer the charcters that don't use vocal tricks, but rely on character and the dialogue itself. My favorites are the baloon lady and her Nancy Palosi.

    Gifford vs. Wiig

Have you every really watched Kathy Lee? She does those facial ticks chuckles. Wiig over exaggerates them, sure, but she's got KLG pegged.

    While I hate Will Ferrell

I have to give it up, this was the best SNL of the season. Not really due to him, but he didn't ruin it either, and was actually funny in the opening skit and as Harry Carey.
