Captain Kirk's dead daddy is found worthy to wield Mjolnir in Branagh's THOR?!?

Published at:  May 16, 2009 6:13:39 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... - Over at Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily - she's claiming that Chris Hemsworth aka Captain Kirk's ungodly heroic dead daddy from JJ's STAR TREK - was apparently carried by Valkyries to Asgard where Odin claimed him as his son and handed him the role of The Mighty Thor!

He beat out the physical manifestation of THOR in Alexander Skarsgard, who has had a very large and vocal fan community heralding him as the God of Thunder, but Chris seems to be grabbing a lot of parts - and we'll see how this all plays out. Now that MARVEL has their THOR, I expect casting to speed up and we'll hopefully be hearing how the rest of the cast comes to play. There's still a part of me that can't believe that one day I'll see a THOR film. I just hope to Odin that Asgard in some way resembles Kirby's inks brought to life. Here's hoping.

Kenneth Branagh's magical powers could make even Zac Efron a fucking badass.

Actually...Thor himself could not do that. But that's not the point. Blonde highlights and arguments about legal status aside, Chris Hemsworth could totally rise to the occasion, just like that time he was too young to be a captain and saved a bunch of people's lives anyways. Because...oh yeah, The Mighty Branagh is in charge!!

Thought Alexandar Skarsgard would have been perfect for the gig. I haven't seen Star treck or anything else the guy has been in so who knows. If Downey Jr. is 5'8 I'll eat my hat. For the record, I never stated or implied that I thought the actor was Chris Pine. Glad I riled up some folks (including the Big Guy himself), though. Yeah, this fellow seems physically ok (if youngish) for the role, despite the fact that studios don't like casting their heroes 30+, especially for comic-book based movies. And, not surprisingly, he's a bit of a pretty boy, but he is playing Marvel's Thor after all--not, for instance, Gaiman's (in which case we'd be looking for a large, rough looking biker type with tiny eyes and a generally dull-witted demeanor.

here of late. Unless your name is Heath Ledger. And even then, it's debatable.Speaking of which (and off topic), I saw TDK for the very 1st time last night. I thought it was--overall--relentless, uncompromising and damned cool. Surely by far the most serious (to the point of being bleak) comic book film adaptation to date. And Ledger lived up to the hype--he was simply tremendous and absolutely iconic as the Joker. Thank god Nicholson's hammy performance has been wiped from our collective gilm memories forever.

That movie was just a hair away from being downright nihilistic.I loved it.It is such a shame that Ledger's Joker will never grace the silver screen again. There was a downright intrinsically tragic quality to TDK. Ledger's Joker won--hands down. Not sure the script made this fact perfectly clear (what with it's last minute attempt to salvage Batman's tarnished heroism), but Ledger's performance sure did. I don't know how Nolan can possibly top TDK with a sequel. Seriously, if I was him--I'd stop directing the franchise now while he's still ahead.

and whilst I thought his small role in Star Trek was done pretty well, I couldn't quite place where I'd seen him before until several hours later and then I remembered - this guy is fucking terrible.

I'll say that again for anyone who hasn't seen much of this guy's work before

in Home & Away he was FUCKING TERRIBLE

this is an Aussie soap where the acting can rarely be considered decent, but even amongst a cast of dullards this guy really stood out. So much so that honestly whenever he was on the screen I had to turn it off. Totally awkward, flat and wooden like he was reading his lines off a note secretly taped to the wall. The guy was terrible. I assumed he was just another pretty boy who had been given an acting gig on account of his muscles. I was actually pretty surprised when I realised that this guy had been given work in a major Hollywood film - and now to be the lead in Thor???

listen - I've no axe to grind and I sure hope I'm proven wrong. After all, his brief moment in Star Trek was a million times better than anything he did in H&A, and it is possible that he's spent some time learning his craft. Plus - Isla Fisher first started on Home & Away and I remembered her as being pretty terrible on that too, but she worked out pretty good in the end.

I just hope it works out well because after Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk I have HUGE expectations/excitement for where this whole Marvel/Avengers thing is going.

Honestly, I would prefer we not have to outsource so many of our roles to across the pond, but there was an article that discussed that most of the manlier actors are from the UK, Aussieland, etc. The last few decent action flicks have starred Brits as opposed to Americans, so aside from that fact that they're cheaper, they're the in thing.

Sound like a good enough pick to me

    by strosmer

Good for him. And they can rough up his looks readily enough so he's not so pretty-boyish. It will be interesting to see how they approach not just this character, but the entire aspect of the Norse mythology in the Marvel Universe. The talent hired for this picture has a unique cinematic opportunity here. When was Asgard last represented in movies? I'm excited to see more ancient mythology being represented in movies and video games. This shit is epic on any scale you want it to be (i.e. God of War series). Note to...Kenneth Branagh? Wow. Didn't realize he was chosen to direct this (going with what I just looked up on IMDb, correct me if I'm mistaken). Okay, well, liked Henry V and Hamlet (moreso Henry V), not Frankenstein. I digress. Branagh better take note of the use of scale in God of War 3 is all I was gonna say. Man, Branagh? My interest in this movie is piqued. Say what you want of Branagh, he is no hack director. And if Marvel's really getting smart, they'll start setting up for more than just the Avengers tangent. May as well tie in Fantastic Four at the same time. Get the cosmic shit rolling already. No reason we can't eventually be seeing turnover in team memberships of the Avengers and Fantastic Four. Why not a FF movie with Spider-Man, Hulk, Wolverine, and Ghost Rider (newly cast) as the members. Seriously, what are you afraid of? As long as good talent is involved, every comic book movie is forthwith, money in the bank. Give it all to us. We are eating this shit up.Also set up and the choices being made in how gods and worlds will look. Here's hoping the director has a good imagination, and the writers do their homework. I guess you hope for that with every film. I'm curious what leeway will Marvel extend in Asgard's visual representation? After Iron Man, I see the potential for any tier of character making an entertaining, qualitative film debut.

I wouldn't want to see Cap, Thor and Avengers ALL follow Ultimates completely, but there is quite a lot to learn cinematically from Vol. 1 and 2 of Ultimates. What I hope they keep for Avengers and Cap is the adventurous spirit and hold back on Millar's cynicism. He didn't really like Cap.

    by thepilgrim

Admit it the Comic Book costume would look retarded in a live action flick. The Winged Gay Pride Parade styled helmet has got to go. What's up with the fins on some of these characters? Flash has lighting bolt wings on the side of his head. Why, so he looks like he's fast or something? Fins look nice on cars, not heads..... I mean no offense with the "Gay" comment. Thor's not Gay (yet), he shouldn't glam out like that unless he was a prideful effeminate gay guy, so again I'm not saying all gay people want to wear wings on their heads. I am saying no one that bad ass and straight would wear a getup like that. The dishes on his chest. The bluish suit. The Cape... No Thanks! Long hair, some sort of batman begins believably made or purchased armor and no wings on the helmet. No!!!!!!!

    by maelstrom_zero

First off, I agree with Sean Bean. He's an awesome actor that actually has the face and possible build for Thor. . .I can't see Kirk's dad doing this though.
Secondly, I think that Marvel has no choice BUT to go with the Ulimates version of Thor. After all, if they're making an Avengers movie, then it needs to be consistent in tone. And so far, Iron Man and Incredible Hulk have been relatively realistic. I just can't imagine a 616 Thor inhabiting Favreau's vision of a Marvel Universe.

Well, eventually the superhero genre will become oversaturated--but you have to admit, seeing comic book heroes on screen (and done well) is pretty amazing. The western genre however, if you recall, was actually incredibly popular back in the day as well, until it collapsed under its own weight. It's only recently, with 3:10 to Yuma and Jesse James, that the Western's been making a (moderate) comeback. Which is something I approve of--there's not enough modern Westerns out there.

you should know better. you know that since Batman and Xmen and Spiderman made money they will beat this dead horse until there is nothing left. they will run thru all ancilliary superheroes until will making a film about Power Pack or something. this will end when they stop being profitable. i agree, less films about superheroes would be ideal. In a perfect world, I would rather have 4 GREAT comic films that 100 mediocre to shitty films, which is where we are heading.

When the comic book genre movie is well made see: Blade, Iron Man, X-Men, Dark Knight, Spidey, then I don't them making more. I love seeing my childhood comic book favorites on the big screen. Now, the problem is, most translations are not very good - see FF, or they try to adhere to closely to source material and thus undermine the unique medium of film, and the directors vision for the sake of slavish devotion to the source see: Watchmen. Secondary characters, or lesser known characters such as Blade can be brought to the big screen and done very well. So, I think we will see more not less. Westerns can be good when done right, but the novelty of westerns now is in their lack of saturation. 20 some years ago Silverado kicked major ass - not just because it was a great and rousing story, but because westerns were so rare.

It's not like Thor is huge multi-picture property like F4 and X-men would be. Cast him, Josh Holloway for Cap...giving him the oppurtunity to not be typecast in his first major film role as he feared he'd be when Fox was trying to get him to be Gambit in X3. And go ahead and hire Longoria as Wasp.

    by oisin5199

I just find this a ridiculous sentiment. It's like saying, 'can we please give science-fiction movies a rest' or 'can we give mystery thrillers a rest'? Why would you want to rest an entire genre of films? I also want to correct the notion that comic books are a genre. No, absolutely not. They are a medium, not a genre. Superheroes are one genre within comic books. And even given that, it's a hybrid genre, since you can have superheroes in epics, comedies, romance stories, spy thrillers, procedurals, crime films (like Dark Knight), the list goes on. There's a huge variety possible among different super-hero stories. And the point of these Avengers films is to build a team franchise. So why would anyone protest the making of a Thor film, when Thor was one of the primary members of that team.

but there is an oversaturation of comic book films. its true. every other film is no based on a comic. your analogy to stop making scifi films is moot. if every film was scifi, your sentiments would be a little more accurate. Marvel is the prime suspect here and they are actually shooting themselves in the foot in the long run.

That's why the Ultimates version of Thor is probably the better choice, rather than adhering to the 616 version of Thor--it'll seem more believable and realistic. Because (and you're right about this) having a flying man carrying a giant hammer speaking Olde English is straight-up laughable.
See, in the Ultimates version, Thor is just a normal guy, a male nurse that works in a hospital. Except one day, he starts having visions that identifies him as Thor reborn, stuck in a cyclic battle against Loki. Obviously, he gets put into a mental institution, but later escapes, steals a high-tech suit and hammer (which gives him the powers of Thor), and goes off to be a hippie, talking about environmentalism and how big corporations and governments suck. Throughout the Ultimates, you never really know if Thor's actually the son of Odin, or if he's just some random crackpot with a super-powered suit with delusions of grandeur.
Personally, I think that the Ultimates portrayal of Thor works--it'd translate to the screen pretty well. Much better than a goofy-looking bodybuilder with wings on the side of a Norse helmet.

    Could be a cool choice

    by ash talon

His opening segment from Star Trek was the best part of the whole movie.

Thor has always been a pretty boy. A huge pretty boy but still a pretty boy. So naysayers don't know they're talking about. If he was cast as Marvel's Hercules, then yes his look wouldn't fit.

I think a Thor movie could be just an awesome sword & sorcery tale. Making Thor work in the modern world is far more precarious. However, this is set in Asgard. People not thinking a Thor in Asgard movie can't work must have hated Lord of the Rings. They can be very similar in style and tone.

I'm curious to see how they handle Thor in the modern world for Avengers. I wonder if they'll change up his costume to make him more acceptable to the public (in the film's reality)? Hopefully in his solo movie, his costume will look like his modern armored look or his armored look from the Simonson run. Basically, he should look like a Rohirrim.

Genres go through waves and sometimes they need to take a well-deserved break. Pirate movies were a lost cause until Depp. Westerns were the dominant genre of the 40s and 50s, but died out by the mid 70s (replaced/absorbed, to some degree, byt other action genres). I wouldn't say that superhero movies have had their day and should be jettisoned, but we do seem to have a lot right now for no reason other than the other ones made money.

I think the better analogy would be "can you please give slasher films a rest," and in the 80's I think that would be apt.
I like super-heroes, I like super-hero movies, but I just don't want them to be made because it is the cool thing to do. I loved Halloween, but that doesn't mean I thought Terror Train and Graduation Day were necessary or that the filmmakers made them for any other reason than to exploit the slasher market (makes me wonder if this is “super-heroploitation?”).
Of course, unlike those old slasher movies, the big studios are making these super-hero films and because of that they are narrowing the pool of movies from another genres getting made (studios only make an X number of films per year). I mean, I think we can all agree that we probably could have lived without Ghost Rider, Punisher: War Zone and The Spirit and had another sci-fi, horror or action movie fill their the void.

Hemsworth might want to hit the gym...or anabolic steroids to become the God of Thunder. Nevertheless, I don't have a problem with an Ultimate version of Thor, provided they lay to rest whether he is Odin's son and just make him the progressive foil to Captain America's more traditionalist role (talk about one Ultimization I could do without...Jesus). If they spend this film setting up that kind of "rebel god" archetype, I'll be satisfied.

    by cant_stop_yawning2

    First - Thor is stupid
Second - Branagh shouldn't be directing this kind of flick; check out Hamlet - he will make it effiminate (not that there is anything wrong with that...just not for thor). branagh admits he doesn't know anything about comics (much less american comics) so why was he chosen and why are they letting him cast?
Third, if you're going to hunt down cheap new talent so you can reign in the cost of a ridiculously expensive avengers movie, make this guy captain america and skarsgard (who remains cheap but has a built in fan base and looks more the part).
finally, by 2013 when the avengers movie rolls around, everyone is goning to be so fatigued by these characters (and the villians - who are also going to run the budget sky high) everyone will wait for blue ray.

Agreed. He's shown nothing in the past, to suggest he's going to be the man that'll give us ,a kick-ass Norse myth themed superhero film.He seems fine at Shakspearian comedies , but managed to mess up big time with Frankenstein.I can predict he'll be packing Thor out with his luvvy chums , we'll be seeing 80 yeard old Richard Briars as Tyre the god of war!I couldn't be any less pessimistic, if they gavethe job of directing this to woody Allen.

Just finished watching Tudors - he can do sneaky-charm very well.I would have preferred Skaarsgard (sp) & counted this guy as a good Capt. America. Oh well. At least it's moving forward.

Brothers Grammaton Cleric Binks and Rameses

    by asimovlives

I agree with you, brother Grammaton Cleric Binks , that until Kenneth Brannagh was mentioned, i had zero interest in the Thor movie. And by the way, the movie he did with Helena Bonham Carter, he didn't directed it, Paul Greengrass did.Brother Rameses, anybody who can deliver such an epic, entertaining and kick ass movie as "Henry V" on the small ludricous budget he had and at the age of 26, that's the kind of guy i would trust with a mega-budget movie about Thor.

sinnott actually inked the first thor in _journey into mystery _ #whatever, and subsequently pencilled some of the (lame) early stories. for nthe most part, the mighty thor/kirby was under the scracthy erasures of the mobbed-up, abysmal vinnie colletta. hopefully, mr. branagh's vision will be closer to the mighty collab of kirby/everett. actually, i hate these overwrought, michael-bay -with-better-punchlines marvel blockbusters, so who cares? that's right -- not me.

Thor = Triple H or CGI

    by paulyd30

Thor is not going to work with a normal actor. This is not a Superman or Batman type character where you can simply make the actor work out for a few months to look the part. We are talking about a GOD here folks. Unless you cast Triple H or someone like him you truley will not get the character as he has been drawn for over 40 years. I would make Donald Blake an actor then make Thor CGI as they did in The Hulk movies. I believe that would work best.

    im torn between this choice...

    by joevfx

I see where marvel is going with this choice. they are saying Thor is a god so he should look perfect i guess. he does sorta look liek thor if he was to beef up more. on the other hand, he wasnt a great actor in star trek, his lines felt to forced. now this coudl be his fault or JJ's but we will see.

I still wish they would have gotten Kevin mckidd. not only does he look liek thor, but he is a really good actor too. How did marvel not watch Rome and not pic this guy to play though is beyond me.

The Thor of Norse Myths wasn't anybodys idea of handsome ..{we are not talking greek gods} he was more like a cross between Brian blessed and WWf's Undertaker , with more gingery body hair.Marvels version on the other hand looks very fetching espescially when john Buscema drew him.

    DoctorWho?

    by dingbatty

Welcome. Others in this thread have explained it in more detail, or, or you can look at the Ultimates article on Wikipedia. I get the impression that for the Ultimates line, Marvel asked Mark Millar to explore what the Avengers would look like if it were reinterpreted for a contemporary movie. I've only looked at one issue, and that was the impression I got (especially since some of the character designs were based upon actors, such as making Nick Fury resemble Samuel L. Jackson).

    by dingbatty

feel they need to radically alter the aesthetic of a superhero universe for the screen. If you look at Brubaker and Epting's recent run at Captain America, or Bendis/Maleev on Daredevil, it is readily apparent how the sensibilities of the photorealism of the screen can be amalgamated with the classic look and feel of the Marvel U.

    Shermdawg,

are you saying "Fuck No" to Triple H or both o ye of little words!
I believe CGI if done right would be smooth as hell. Keeping in mind that blake would be on screen more as in the Hulk movies with Dr. Banner. Look at the Hulk , yah te plot and writing sucked ballz but man did the Hulk look sweet brother no one can argue that. Finally a kick ass Marvel comic book come to life, The Hulk movie kicked Ass on CGI and so would Thor. Thor is 6'6" and needs to be CGI or Triple H. Some 6'2" actor is not going to cut trust me. Go watch the old Incredible Hulk lou frigino vs Thor tv movie and you will see.

Eh, not sure + Bean would make a great Loki.

    by kevred

I liked him as Kirk's dad, but it's hard for me to imagine him delivering Thor dialogue.Sure, Thor's a little bit on the stiff and simple side in some ways, but he needs to have gravity and a larger-than-life persona. He can't just look like a bland musclehead alongside RDJ and Edward Norton, he has to have some aura of cosmic/alien about him. Not to mention the ability to ratchet up to wild, storm-loving, uncontrollable-temper Thor in moments. Based on what I've seen I still prefer Skarsgard. And all this talk of Sean Bean makes me think he'd knock Loki out of the park. Nothing against Hartnett, but he suddenly seems like Jim Henson's Loki Babies next to Bean.

Hiddleston as Loki doesn't grab me so much

    by kevred

But I hope he's got something terrific that will make it great. He doesn't strike me as cosmic enough, and his age makes me think it'll be young Thor, which also doesn't thrill me. This fellow + Kirk's dad = strangely small, modest center to an epic movie.

    Again: Ultimates suck

    by kevred

Ultimates Thor is a cop-out, a cowardly shrinking away from imagination, a sell-out to pseudo-gritty BS 'realism'. We don't need fantasy stories that apologize for being fantasies and try to fit in with the cool kids. We need fantasy stories that take their uniqueness and run with it.Ultimates Thor is embarrassed of Kirby and Lee. I'm not.
