‘We Should Really Rehearse!!’ Watch Now Ten Percent Of Thursday’s 100th THE OFFICE!!

Published at:  May 15, 2009 12:53:19 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“The Office” is now beating “CSI” in key demos. I can’t get over that.

Tonight’s “Office” is the last till September, but I am not sweating it. This summer, The Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim will start transmitting the original U.K. version of “The Office,” so I’ll finally be able to find out why fans tell me Gareth Keenan is funnier than beet-farming shun-happy Nazi spawn Dwight Schrute:

Tonight’s installment is also being billed as not only the fifth season finale but also the 100th episode of the American “Office.” The Brit version only managed 14 half-hours.

NBC says:
COMPANY PICNIC
Written by Jen Celotta and Paul Lieberstein
It’s the annual Dunder Mifflin company picnic and Michael and Holly are reunited, and Michael has some big plans for her. Meanwhile, the office competes in the picnic’s volleyball tournament.

Michael intends to kiss Holly, who attends the picnic with her new Nashua branch boyfriend in tow.

Dwight will be overcome with Pon Farr and Pam will be rushed to the ER.

Expect a big cliffhanger that will echo into season six.

Scenes deleted from last week’s “Café Disco”:

9 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

this show blows- it is the most aimlessly driven show since its Lead in Earl. What was last weeks episode about? I saw my wife watchign them all dance in a room - then hilarity ensues! Yeah right...The only funny parts are the begining before the credits ( 30 seconds) and the ending scene ( another 30 seconds )

    "Only managed 14 episodes"??

    by borges912

My understanding was that Gervais had planned a very limited series and wanted to go out well before it got stale. And I don't think the American Office has produced 14 episodes yet that were worth airing. Benihana Christmas is an exception.

    by toe jam

they need to put the american version out of its misery. judging from herc's comments, though, it doesn't sound like nbc is about to do that. i can only hope steve carrell decides to leave the show, which quickly is approaching the level of mediocrity it hasn't seen since the pilot episode. horrible.

    why cancel shows?

    by itrainmonkeys

I don't get why people will campaign to cancel shows. If you don't like it......that's fine. Don't watch it. But why should everyone who does like it, miss out on a show because you don't find it funny?change the channel, read a book, watch a dvd, build a birdhouse. do something other then complain about a television show that has no real effect on your life

If you hate show X, there exists a chance that if cancelled replacement show Y will be more up your alley.
Frankly I dislike that mindset. I want every show (even those I don't watch) to get renewed every season. Especially Reaper. Damn you CW.

    chrth: i guess so

    by itrainmonkeys

Yea I thought about that mindset.....and think it's a bogus reason for wanting a show cancelled. Whatever replacement shoy Y is will exist no matter where it's time slot is. If it's an existing show - it's already on some other time. If it's new - well new shows are going to get made regardless of where they appear on the schdule. I mean, it's not like new shows aren't debuting anyway. They aren't like "Well if we cancel The Office we will have to come up with a new show to fill in that time-slot". With VCRs, DVRs, and the internet I don't really see why a timeslot is so important for a viewer that they need to have only shows they like on only nights that they want.
Thanks for the response....it's appreciated. I just don't see how that can be someone's rationale for wanting a show off the air. There's a ton of shows I dislike and don't watch....but don't look forward to them getting cancelled.

judgish - your analogy seems good at first

    by itrainmonkeys

but when you think about it it doesn't work. you put a pet to sleep because it's sick or dying. while you don't find the office funny....it's still doing great in terms of ratings and is one of NBCs top shows.

plus when you have to put a pet down......it's usually your only pet (or one of a few). with television you have hundreds of choices

    by mapman

That comment alone really speaks volumes to your lack of credibility for critiquing TV.

The UK Office was perfect. It definitely went out on a high note and I am completely satisfied. The Brits understand that you don't need to drive a show into the ground by making 22 episodes per year every year.

    by lloytron

You make it sound as if it was cancelled. It wasn't. I like the US version but the UK original is superior in my opinion.I know it is a hard concept to understand but quality > quantity. Fawlty Towers is another example. End on a high and be remembered forever instead of stringing it out.

Can't name 14 good US Office Eps? Really?!?

    by rsanta74

I just went through the list of all 5 seasons. There are some REALLY memorable episodes. I actually managed to list 33 that I could totally remember based on title alone.

    "Diversity Day"
    "Basketball"
    "Sexual Harassment"
    "The Fight"
    "Booze Cruise"
    "Dwight's Speech"
    "Drug Testing"
    "Casino Night"
    "Gay Witch Hunt"
    "The Coup"
    "Grief Counseling"
    "Diwali"
    "Benihana Christmas"
    "Back from Vacation"
    "The Return"
    "Ben Franklin"
    "Business School"
    "The Negotiation"
    "Product Recall"
    "The Job"
    "Fun Run"
    "Dunder Mifflin Infinity"
    "Survivor Man"
    "Dinner Party"
    "Goodbye, Toby"
    "Frame Toby"
    "Prince Family Paper"
    "Golden Ticket"
    "New Boss"
    "Dream Team"
    "Heavy Competition"
    "Broke"
    "Casual Friday"

Season 5 started off pretty slowly, but picked up a HELL OF A LOT in the back 1/2. The whole Michael Scott Paper Company storyline beat the crap out of the rest of the season. Easily.

Michael's antics are a bit more exaggerated and doltish now than when the show started, much like Homer Simpson 1989 vs Homer Simpson 2009. Still, there are those moments when Michael is suddenly revealed to be an idiot savant. That storyline alone proved that, even though he's usually borderline retarded (like most bosses), Michael is actually way way smarter than people give him credit.

He's a character who has grown a lot over the years. He started up as a bit of an oblivious douche and worked his way up to a funny, likable guy whose main flaw is that his brain doesn't always communicate with his mouth.

Today- you very well may be a tool. I can't say for certain. I won't call anyone a tool- but since you called yourself one...As for the show- 3 years ago it was a decent show. But the show has hit the wall this last year or so. Its the equivalent of a baseball player tryign to reach 3000 hits- you got there..now retire and save your dignity! Office hits 100 episodes- according to another tber only 34 were considered good...Where I come from 34% is Failing Grade!! But if they stopped the bleeding when they only had 40 some episodes- The Office would look like the Seinfeld of the 2000's.

Because I'm scared that there will be another Kath and Kim, or any of the other 100,000 failed NBC sit-coms of the past 15 years. Even lukewarm Office has to be better than that.As for Jugdish I think the main problem is like I say it sounds like his wife watches it. I assume if it wasn't on in his house he wouldn't care so much, but I guess I could be wrong. He could be one of those people who are really concerned that there is something he doesn't like on television on one channel out of hundreds for 30 minutes a week. There do seem to be a lot of them around here.

    by jugdish

I used to watch it , but it hit the wall..My wife still watches it, but she watches it for the BS Soap Opera Jim, Pam, the other guy stuff ( which is not part of the show anymore from what she tells me ) I was a big fan- but it started sucking. I tried to continue to watch but it got annoying. I think BJ Novak decided to make himself a focal point. Back when Michael was doign everything wrong- but woudl turn out right in thelong run- those were great shows. then they took a turn where they made Michael a complere putz and retard and it started hitting the wall. I gave up. You guys gotta admit that the show has begun to suck within the last few seasons.

    Completely Different Shows

    by snife

Firstly, I do watch and enjoy the US Office but its a completely different show to the UK Office. Its broad, lowest common denominator comedy, it has some laughs but will not have the lasting power of the UK version (in terms of being remembered rather than number of episodes).

What makes Gareth infinitely better than Dwight is that he is believable - anyone who has worked in an office in the UK will probably know someone with similar traits and this is the genius of the show. It is a mockumentary and is believable as such with the comedy being more subtle; when it was first broadcast many people thought it was a real documentary whereas with the US version, its clear your watching a scripted sitcom.

When I pull out my British Office Dvd set to watch, its impossible without me getting antsy and bored to death. Its amazing since when I first saw it I thought it was the best show ever and immediately ordered the PAL dvd from Amazon uk, but now just can't sit through one episode...weird. I can rewatch any of the American ones over and over and now the first season is great and the first episode seems like the original first episode and the British version seems like a lame french canadian copy.

No Creed?!? Oscar's only line is a "gay" one?

I blame Silverman (because it seems like the thing to do now-a-days) and because he is a douchebag. How could you butcher a show's finale like that?? Weak episode, just painful to watch Michael this week. The silent reveal was, I don't know, if Jim & Pam dating wasn't jumping the shark, then there's a good chance this is.
30 Rock was hilarious this week, a solid episode, up until the song. Song was disappointing, save for a lyric or two. But this was definitely outweighed by the greatness that preceded it.

I'm a sucker for that bull and I think that's why most people who watch this show continually come back to it. And these people are not the demographic that tends to come to these websites, so you can understand why its up in key demos. Holly and Michael's Slumdog Millionaire skit was CRINGE worthy. I almost wanted to fast forward, which is when you know it's working. 30 Rock was so-so. Definitely DID NOT feel like a finale. I didn't get that it was the last episode this season until Liz says, "We had quite a year huh?". It seems like 30 Rock is abandoning all desire to have serialized elements (i.e. Floyd, CC), which is a shame, since I feel , besides its pop culture quirk and hilarious scenarios, drew me to it in season 1. I used to think of 30 Rock as the US version of Spaced. Both heavily pop culture relevant and had characters that we cared about it. It's slowly and slowly turning into a live action version of Family Guy. Still love it though.

    by guntermonkey

Than almost all the half hour comedy on network TV...it has grown into a hit show, beloved by many people. Can we stop comparing it to the British version? The two are incomparable now...100 episodes is quite a feat in this age of television, and I would say a majority of those episodes are high quality and truly funny. We should be applauding The Office instead of this stupid "not funny this season" line that appears frequently for almost every comedy TV show that is discussed here...give The Office some props..in related news, 30 Rock was awesome...that was the closest thing I've seen to a live action Simpsons episode...

Seriously, who wrote this episode and have they ever met a human being before? The way Charles Miner tried to force Pam out of the game and Michael/Holly's "they didn't know?" skit were not only bad writing, but lazy cheap storytelling devices. Charles would never pull that in front of his employees, and Jim/Holly aren't brain dead. And don't get me started on the "run down to the hospital while I delay the game" bit. It's like they wrote the Pam pregnancy reveal and worked backwards to get there.

Declan McMannis, International Art Theif. If for any reason I ever feel the rath of the ban-hammer, that will just have to be my new screen name. Christ, I love Elvis Costello. "But if I get a chance, I'm punching Costello in the back of the head." Priceless.

Office, blah. Agreed, if they'd had an hour, could've been classic. Rolf and the volleyball competition had such potential (also, Dwight back with Angela? We can only hope). The whole thing just needed room to breath.

And it wasn't a particularly 'epic' finale for 30 Rock, but goddamn. That shows firing all pistons again. I was worried half-way through this season, but they're picking it up. Song coulda' been better, but coulda' been MUCH worse.

Well no shit, it wasn't supposed to be, the only ones who think they are funny are them, that's what was funny about it, not the sketch itself. I have seen every episode of this show, and I find it to be consistently funny with the occasional dud episode, but those are few and far between. Considering the crap that qualifies for television these days, The Office is high quality entertainment.

    by jamz

I'm British and while the UK Office was great in its day, I much prefer the American Officer show. If you check out the UK Office now it really doesn't stand up that well - it's become outdated very quickly. One major difference, in my opinion, is that Steve Carrell is a far more gifted actor than Ricky Gervais, who really only plays one role - that of Ricky Gervais (Office, Extras, Night In The Museum, Stardust...all variations of the same character).

You ignoramus! You have the gall to be a TV "critic" (whatever) and you are so fucking ignorant you don't know that MANY of the very best British TV shows "only" ran for 2 seasons of 6 episodes because they were PLANNED and WRITTEN from day 1 to run like that? YOU STUPID FUCK.

Let's examine some of these CRAP, limited-run shows shall we?

The Office - 2 seasons of 6 episodes
    Extras - 2 seasons of 6 episodes
Spaced 2 seasons of 7 episodes
Fawlty Towers - 2 seasons of 6 episodes
Black Adder I, II, III, IV (6 episodes each "series", which were really different shows)
The IT Crowd - 3 seasons of 6 episodes
The Young Ones - 2 seasons of 6 episodes
and of course, "the utter crap, cancelled"
    The Prisoner - 17 episodes

These QUALITY shows had a story arc and were bascially made to run for (often) 2 seasons of 6. They didn't follow the practise of "run it into the ground".

The US Office still has it's moments, but it's mostly utter mediochre crap now. David Brent in the UK Office was an asshole, but he was a recognizable HUMAN asshole, Michael Scott is a cartoon character. The UK Office and Extras were masterpieces of what I call "cringe" comedy, if you are not squirming in your seat, you don't get it.

Herc, you ough to be ashamed of yourself for implying it only "managed" 14 episodes, you FAIL.

spare us the bullshit "clarifying statement" Herc

QUOTE I didn't mean to imply the U.K. office was cancelled..
By all accounts it was the show's creators who decided to shut down after 14 episodes, not the BBC, and I don't mean to imply otherwise.END-QUOTE

You didn't fucking KNOW, dont bullshit us. I saw your "Parks and Recreation" comment, saw one episode, turned it off halfway thru, the material isn't worthy of a 3 minute SNL skit. Unfunny to the extreme.

Dang, this crowd is hard to please

I mean, I thought my standards were high...

All three comedies had solid finales. I actually most enjoyed (to my surprise) the Parks and Recreation finale. Ann's boyfriend actually made the episode. The whole thing was pretty funny.

30 Rock had that whole celebrity bash, and yes Sheryl Crow was quite good.

Loved the Office except that I do have serious misgivings about Pam's pregnancy...seems to be leading to a lot of sentimentality and while sentimentality has it's place, the Office isn't it.

    Let's go, all-black

    by cloneomat

Did anybody else see this? When Jim picks up Pam at the volleyball game to take her to the clinic, if I turn on my subtitles it looks like he says "let's go, all-black" to Charles Miner... wtf?
