Not a big fan of musicals. The last onbe I saw was Sweeney Todd, which would have been 10 times better without all the stupid singing. Each to their own, I suppose.

It's also a take on Fellini's 81/2, Felini being one of my all time favourite directors.Rob Marshall's Chicago was very enjoyable, more because of the music and actors rather than his cinematic translation, the film itself was very stagey

    NINE is a brilliant musical

    by sequitur

This show has been around since 1982 when it starred the late, great Raul Julia. As for the basic plot: It focuses on film director Guido Contini, savoring his most recent (and greatest) success but facing his fortieth birthday and a midlife crisis blocking his creative impulses and entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties in early-1960s Venice.

The stage show was famous for only one starring male role (the director) and 20 women.

As for this film... if it's a super zany alternate reality in which old Guido comes out of an ice cave fending off a giant creature with a torch, I'm there.

    by ripvanmarlowe

We already have 8 1/2, the classic Fellini film. As plenty of people have pointed out, we also have Nine, the stage musical adaptation of Fellini's 8 1/2. Why, then, do we need Nine, the Rob Marshall-directed film adaptation of the stage musical adaptation of Fellini's 8 1/2? Granted, this thing has a pretty remarkable cast, but it still feels completely unnecessary. Then again, I'd be more than happy to see Marshall prove me wrong.

    compare to FAME

    by himbo

The trailer, not the movie. Remember Harry's vitriolic reaction to the new Fame TRAILER, and his love post of the orinal movie's boring trailer?
Then we get this trailer, which really shows even less of the plot than the Fame trailer and he's loving it up. Not saying it won't be a good movie, or that Fame won't be awful. Just a little consistency might be good. Cause really, this trailer sucks with the exception of the song.
And while it's not a remake of 8 1/2, its like the incestuous relationship between Mame and Auntie Mame. A book begats a play, which begats a movie, which inspires a a stage musical, which adatps to a movie musical.
And I'm amused that an English woman, Irish Man, Aussie woman, Spanish woman, and American pop-star are telling me to "Be Italian." I can't believe Sophia is being brought in as a token Italian. If you've not seen 8 1/2, check it out. Marcello's performance is really something.

Because despite loving pretty much every other movie musical I've ever seen, I kinda hated Chicago. The one thing that saved it at all imo was Catherine Zeta Jones. And Marshall has packed this with an extraordinary cast so it might not matter how he directed it.

And I'm curious about Daniel Day Lewis. I know Antonio Banderas was supposed to do this originally since he starred in it on Broadway. And then I heard Javier Bardem was supposed to be in it so when they went to production with Daniel I was like "huh?" But I trust him too. Hopefully he won't turn out to be another Johnny Depp. I didn't like Sweeney Todd either. Forgot about that for a minute. But that WAS the casting.

So for now, I'm not going to care. And I'll see it in a matter of fact way. If I love it, great. It not, whatever. But I'm not going to get myself disappointed.

    by liberty valance

Practically the entire genre is based on interpretation of existing material, and that includes movies. Always has been, always will be. Pygmailion/My Fair Lady, Oliver Twist/Oliver!, Romeo & Juliet/West Side Story. The fucking Lion King is Hamlet with singing animals. The list is endless. The Producers and Hairspray went from movie to musical and back again. Even Singin' in the Rain only had ONE original song ("Moses Supposes"); the rest were recycled from previous movie musicals. In my experience the jerkoffs who proclaim they hate musicals will shut the fuck up if you call them out on The Wizard of Oz, Disney (Aladdin, The Jungle Book, Mary Poppins), Grease and the like. That said, Nine looks great. DDL is so fucking talented I'd watch him sing an insurance policy.

    Nine != 8 1/2

    by plum

One more time, for the hard of comprehension: The musical Nine is based on Fellini's film but is not the same thing, and the stage is not remotely the same as the screen as a story-telling medium. So please, save your sanctimonious crap about the pillage of the source material for when you actually have a point.

Nine also happens to have a pretty fantastic all-around score, something a few recent movie musicals (Dreamgirls, Rent, Chicago*) lacked. And a great score treated lovingly can lift up a movie musical even in the bits the director screws up - Sweeney Todd was proof of that. Nine is meatier story material than Chicago, too, so I'm interested to see if Marshall can handle it. Probably not, but he's not terrible, and sometimes he shoots dance magnificently, which seemingly no one knows how to do in movies these days.

*I'm not saying Dreamgirls or Chicago had bad scores - just that they were scores with some serious weak points. Kander and Ebb did better with Cabaret.

    by gqtaste

has no business being in this and I'm not even going to start w/ Fergie Ferge! She's a piece of shit and I don't care how small her roles is. Day Lewis is a master along w/ Dench. Nicole is a role stealer. She gobbles up as many as she can from other actors in her age range. Would have preferred her buddy Naomi Watts. Don't trust the director as I didn't like Chicago or Memoirs of a Geisha. It seems he could fuck up a cup of coffee, but there is so much talent in this musical that it will likely be good just the same. And of course the late great Tony Minghella writing a draft of this is a great sign as well.

    by ribbons

Because this is, like, commercial or stuff, and Fellini was, like, THE MAN and whatever? Any of you sanctimonious douchebags care to articulate your hostility towards this movie any further than that? Fellini had to answer to producers too; just because something is made within the studio system doesn't mean it's incapable of being art and commerce at the same time. I would find the anti-mainstream ethos a lot more convincing if any of you were prepared to say with a straight face that you didn't love The Dark Knight.

It was on a raked stage that was big tiles and played like a chess game between him and the women. Can't imagine this not being a hit--Fergie plays the mistress which won an award for Anita Morris .

    Yep, probable Oscar frontrunner.

    by flickchick85

It looks a lot more like Chicago in style than I was expecting, but damn, I love 8 1/2, I love the Broadway musical, and I LOVE the cast (minus Hudson and Fergie, but they both have small roles)...so yeah, I can't wait for this, even if it is clearly shouting "Oscar" from the rooftop.

    Sanctimonious douchebags...

The further away you get from the source material the less its recognized. 8 1/2 is an all time cinematic classic. Make a musical DERIVED from the source..okay, sure. Turn it into a film again and all of the sudden its Fellini who? The Oprah crowd will be praising a musical based on starpower and flash rather than its original intent of paying homage to Fellini. Make no mistake people this is not a seperate entity for god's sake its based on 8 1/2. I'm unapologetically passionate about cinema as an artform and will be until the day I die. Its not a lashing against (sigh) consumerism in movies. That would be a simplistic view of it. It just will not draw attention to the Fellini masterpiece. It will only detract. Thats why I'm not happy about it. Call me pretentious and bitchy. I stand by my word.

It's not a zero sum game

I understand why you'd find it discouraging that a movie of Nine probably won't encourage most viewers to see 8 1/2. But I'm really not seeing how the Nine film TAKES AWAY viewers from 8 1/2, or makes the latter any less of a masterpiece. If the Nine movie sucks, it'll go the way of the Producers movie musical - people will forget it and watch the original film instead. If it's good in its own right, it'll deserve the audiences it gets. There's room in the world for more than one way of telling the same story.

    The lack of recognition

    by orsonswells

is really my beef. You're right though, its not as if Fellini will be forgotten about. Of course there's always room for different interpretations of classics,Shakespeare knows this best. Its just that 8 1/2 is near and dear to my heart.

    So what you're saying is...

    by ribbons

...that more people would be likely to discover 8 1/2 if 9 didn't exist? I don't think it works like that.

    Super 8 1/2

    by dukedemondo

Fellini was a tired, misogynist, embarrassing old bastard - I have no problem with the idea of Rob Marshall whippin' up a musical version of 8 1/2. One of my favourite pictures of all ever is a similarly irreverent (and yet not) dart about those particular shadows: Bruce LaBruce's Super 8 1/2. The film the wheezin' goat would've made if A - he'd had any soul, B - had anything worth hearing to say and C - had made good on all those gestures towards the pornography. www.mondoirlando.com
