NINE - that Rob Marshall film adaptation of the Broadway musical adaptation of Fellini's 8 1/2! It has a trailer! Wanna see?
Hey folks, Harry here... Wow. This one I'd heard about. Intellectually I knew the cast, what the project was, who was shooting it... you know. All the basic details, but I just didn't know exactly how fucking excited I'd get when I saw the fucking brilliant awesome this trailer would get me for the live action film called NINE. Wow. Yes, I'm totally all about Musicals. And this musical looks exactly like Harry crack. That this is my Thanksgiving cinematic feast this year... it makes me giddy. Just look at this glorious HD Quicktime Trailer over at Apple! Isn't it something!?

I don't care... flame away!
-
Nohomo, you suck.
Glad to be of service:-).
Not a big fan of musicals. The last onbe I saw was Sweeney Todd, which would have been 10 times better without all the stupid singing. Each to their own, I suppose.
What's Harry crack? Is that some kind of post-op genitalia thing? On second thoughts, I don't wanna know. -
Two movies named 'nine' in one year? Weird.
-
There should be two films called "Avatar" too, but one of them is running scared from the much hyped eyeball-fucker of 2009.
-
...One is being made by Shalamalamadingdong, the other by James Motherfucking Cameron. I'd be running too.
-
Nice "eyeball-fucker of 2009" I like.
This looks interesting. Didn't know they made a Fellini movie into a musical.
Now time for Baz Luhrmann to do a musical version of "Stardust Memories." Get woody to be in it! -
Not only would I run from Avatar, but Cameron is one mean, scary bastard!
Apparently, he can turn himself into a moose using only the power of anger.
-
... when sophia loren showed up. reminded me of the last oscars. Loren, Kidman, Cruz, etc.
it makes me want to watch 81/2 again, not a bad thing. i love the film.
i'm interested for now. -
First, "Hardon Collider" and now "Harry crack". Something on your mind, big fella?
-
A whore.
-
A timeless classic adapted as a f***in' musical? You can't be serious about this being even remotely "cool". Soulless Oscar shit I call this, just like Chicago.

Shut up...You had me at Rob Marshall film adaptation
by iowa snot client
Of a Broadway musical? Is "Fergie" in this, really? I'd check the trailer but I need to wash my hair this morning.
-
You're entitled to your philosophy, but I think this looks 1) like it isn't just respectful to, but a celebration of, the Fellini film, and 2) awesome. At the very least you should try watching the trailer with an open mind.
-
Oh my. ...My mind is blown by Daniel Day Lewis' appearance in this alone. ...And he doesn't even say a word. I can't stop watching this trailer again and again. It's so beautiful.
-
the guy is just the best. Can't wait to see it. Day-Lewis is trying something different here, which is good to see. It's also a take on Fellini's 81/2, Felini being one of my all time favourite directors.Rob Marshall's Chicago was very enjoyable, more because of the music and actors rather than his cinematic translation, the film itself was very stagey
-
...you shouldn't be posting to a movie site. Period.
-
I have no idea.
-
This show has been around since 1982 when it starred the late, great Raul Julia. As for the basic plot: It focuses on film director Guido Contini, savoring his most recent (and greatest) success but facing his fortieth birthday and a midlife crisis blocking his creative impulses and entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties in early-1960s Venice.
The stage show was famous for only one starring male role (the director) and 20 women.
-
This is a remake of 8 1/2! WITH FERGIE. Let me say that again. IT STARS FERGIE. WHAT PART OF THAT SOUNDS GOOD???????
-
It looks a lot better than the overrated Chicago... Anything with Danny boy should be good
-
Is that a question..or a statement:-)?
Nah, you're right. Fergie is fucking atrocious. I wouldn't even let the scruffy bitch wash my car.
-
THE DIRECTOR OBVIOUSLY DOESN'T HAVE A WHOLE LOT OF CREATIVITIY. LIKE THE GIRL WHO DIRECTED THE PRODUCERS ADAPTATION. THEY BOTH SHOULD STICK TO DIRECTING THEATRE PERFORMANCES AND STAY AWAY FROM FILM.
-
Fergie doesn't star in it. She has a supporting role. Calm the fuck down.
And it isn't just a straight-up remake; it's a movie adaptation of the wildly acclaimed stage version. -
With virtually the same name?
"9" & "NINE"....
Smart.
Penelope Cruz: It would be great if she could actually try communicating in something other than vowel sounds.
Chick's got the laziest elocution in showbusiness. -
Normally I'm not the kinda person that is bothered by reboots, but this reboot of the Fellini world creeps me out.
Heh. 8 1/2 is one of my all time favorite films and I'm hoping this film means a High Def release of it soon.
As for this film... if it's a super zany alternate reality in which old Guido comes out of an ice cave fending off a giant creature with a torch, I'm there.
Oh and if this makes more people aware of 8 1/2, I'm all for it. People will soon see where Indiana Jones really came from. -
9 the musical
District 9
9 the post apocalyptic cartoon
Any more 9's in you, Hollywood? We're apparently ready for an all 9 year -
Should have been a no brainer.
-
I'll probably check it out, as Marshall usually makes good films, and most of the headliners' work I like.
-
This is the greatest thing I've seen as a coming attraction! Fellini's 8 1/2 as a musical? How'd I miss that when it premiered on stage?
-
Is it me or does anyone else keep thinking Bond will show up to karate chop someone in the neck?
-
Something is missing. The style is there, even the verve. There's the attempt to recapture the enchantment of Fellini, but somehow the magic feels absent. It looks like just another musical.
-
I was pretty underwhelmed by the casting in Chicago, though I liked the movie as a whole. This one looks like it has way better on-screen talent.
-
What part of adaptation of STAGE MUSICAL don't you understand? Its a different entity.
-
But interesting eh?
-
And he'll drink all of our milk shakes..............again. :)
-
I can't imagine anyone wanting to see "Harry crack".
-
Watch the trailer for Gooby.
-
We already have 8 1/2, the classic Fellini film. As plenty of people have pointed out, we also have Nine, the stage musical adaptation of Fellini's 8 1/2. Why, then, do we need Nine, the Rob Marshall-directed film adaptation of the stage musical adaptation of Fellini's 8 1/2? Granted, this thing has a pretty remarkable cast, but it still feels completely unnecessary. Then again, I'd be more than happy to see Marshall prove me wrong.
-
The trailer, not the movie. Remember Harry's vitriolic reaction to the new Fame TRAILER, and his love post of the orinal movie's boring trailer?
Then we get this trailer, which really shows even less of the plot than the Fame trailer and he's loving it up. Not saying it won't be a good movie, or that Fame won't be awful. Just a little consistency might be good. Cause really, this trailer sucks with the exception of the song.
And while it's not a remake of 8 1/2, its like the incestuous relationship between Mame and Auntie Mame. A book begats a play, which begats a movie, which inspires a a stage musical, which adatps to a movie musical.
And I'm amused that an English woman, Irish Man, Aussie woman, Spanish woman, and American pop-star are telling me to "Be Italian." I can't believe Sophia is being brought in as a token Italian. If you've not seen 8 1/2, check it out. Marcello's performance is really something. -
For all the people on this message board who are worked up over a so-called "remake" of 8 1/2, there are plenty, I'm sure, who feel that Nine should remain, as you put it, "a different entity."
-
The recent revival with Antonio was strange, beautiful and breathtaking, and the film looks like it grabbed its best elements. This isn't any ordinary musical.
-
it itches the inside of my skull, but I can't pull it up.
Whats it from? -
about damn time....but in a couple months we'll get a new trailer that explains to all of us like children what the movie is exactly about.
-
that makes it better. A adaptation of an adaptation. Yeah, that seems better than just a knock off of the original. You are right, we should all calm down. Its nice to know the Arts are safe in the hands of talentless underwhelming hacks.
Thank the Gods. -
Fantastic trailer, that literally gave me goosebumps, and all the sad fucks are out already nitpickng it to death. Just another day on the talkback.
-
...because often, much like Little Shop Of Horrors, the film adaptation of the stage show as opposed to the original film is wildly different. Compare Frank Oz's Little Shop to the Corman one. They have different plots and different tones. Nine is not 8 1/2. Nine is Nine.
-
why oh why do we really need that many nines at once, let alone in the same year?
-
Heard Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth were casted.
-
And this looks really good with a great cast. I'm not sure where the bitching is coming from.
-
This is wrong on so many levels.

Was the musical again Fellini or just an adaptation of it
by lovecraftfan
-
...and I mean that as a compliment. I’m way psyched now. Weinstein Co’s first BIG hit?
-
Because despite loving pretty much every other movie musical I've ever seen, I kinda hated Chicago. The one thing that saved it at all imo was Catherine Zeta Jones. And Marshall has packed this with an extraordinary cast so it might not matter how he directed it.
And I'm curious about Daniel Day Lewis. I know Antonio Banderas was supposed to do this originally since he starred in it on Broadway. And then I heard Javier Bardem was supposed to be in it so when they went to production with Daniel I was like "huh?" But I trust him too. Hopefully he won't turn out to be another Johnny Depp. I didn't like Sweeney Todd either. Forgot about that for a minute. But that WAS the casting.
So for now, I'm not going to care. And I'll see it in a matter of fact way. If I love it, great. It not, whatever. But I'm not going to get myself disappointed. -

Had zero interest until is saw Day Lewis' name

Also, screenplay by Anthony Minghella. Looks good.

Day Lewis for Dick Dastardly!!!
by i_am_not_the_droid_you_are_looking_for
Seriously, someone make a fucking Whacky Races flick. Day Lewis was born to play the role!
-
...but only if he could direct it. Hell no, Crazy In Alabama.
-
Practically the entire genre is based on interpretation of existing material, and that includes movies. Always has been, always will be. Pygmailion/My Fair Lady, Oliver Twist/Oliver!, Romeo & Juliet/West Side Story. The fucking Lion King is Hamlet with singing animals. The list is endless. The Producers and Hairspray went from movie to musical and back again. Even Singin' in the Rain only had ONE original song ("Moses Supposes"); the rest were recycled from previous movie musicals. In my experience the jerkoffs who proclaim they hate musicals will shut the fuck up if you call them out on The Wizard of Oz, Disney (Aladdin, The Jungle Book, Mary Poppins), Grease and the like. That said, Nine looks great. DDL is so fucking talented I'd watch him sing an insurance policy.
-
You silly, portly, ginger.
-
I wouldn't have put it exactly the way you did, but you speak the truth.
And don't forget: when the legend becomes fact, print the legend. -
And there's something about a big cast of beautiful women and only one man that just gives me a thrill. Especially with Nicole and that long blonde hair - oh man, I am so fucking there. It will probably be one of her last roles as the ravishing, gorgeous sexpot. I also agree with the poster who said they were disappointed in CHICAGO - I agree, but I'm hoping that this time Harvey Scissorhands will let Rob Marshall do his thing and not cut it to ribbons.
-
Daniel Day-Lewis and Judi Dench, holy fuck that's great. And then you got these really hot chicks (not Fergie, but the rest are bonertacular) in there. If DDL is in it, it can't be a bad film. Also I thought the trailer was pretty good.
-
Watch this movie you twats!
-
Read his post before your fucking fat oafish fingers hit enter on your keyboard.
-
people...you dont have to be nostradamus to predict that this film is headed to a dozen plus nominations, from Daniel Day Lewis to Penelope Cruz to Dame Judy Dench, to the Director Rob Marshall, the writer ANTHONY MINGHELLA,, cinematography, costumes, all the lesser awards...i mean come on...and oh yeah BEST PICTURE. You read it hear first...
-
dear oh dear... let's keep our fingers crossed...
-
One more time, for the hard of comprehension: The musical Nine is based on Fellini's film but is not the same thing, and the stage is not remotely the same as the screen as a story-telling medium. So please, save your sanctimonious crap about the pillage of the source material for when you actually have a point.
Nine also happens to have a pretty fantastic all-around score, something a few recent movie musicals (Dreamgirls, Rent, Chicago*) lacked. And a great score treated lovingly can lift up a movie musical even in the bits the director screws up - Sweeney Todd was proof of that. Nine is meatier story material than Chicago, too, so I'm interested to see if Marshall can handle it. Probably not, but he's not terrible, and sometimes he shoots dance magnificently, which seemingly no one knows how to do in movies these days.
*I'm not saying Dreamgirls or Chicago had bad scores - just that they were scores with some serious weak points. Kander and Ebb did better with Cabaret. -
has no business being in this and I'm not even going to start w/ Fergie Ferge! She's a piece of shit and I don't care how small her roles is. Day Lewis is a master along w/ Dench. Nicole is a role stealer. She gobbles up as many as she can from other actors in her age range. Would have preferred her buddy Naomi Watts. Don't trust the director as I didn't like Chicago or Memoirs of a Geisha. It seems he could fuck up a cup of coffee, but there is so much talent in this musical that it will likely be good just the same. And of course the late great Tony Minghella writing a draft of this is a great sign as well.
-
I DON"T WANNA SEE.
-
"I'd like to rent 9."
"It's right that way."
"What's wrong with you? I don't want NINE! I want 9!"
"Get the fuck out of my store."
Seriously, that's happening at some point in the future. -
Because this is, like, commercial or stuff, and Fellini was, like, THE MAN and whatever? Any of you sanctimonious douchebags care to articulate your hostility towards this movie any further than that? Fellini had to answer to producers too; just because something is made within the studio system doesn't mean it's incapable of being art and commerce at the same time. I would find the anti-mainstream ethos a lot more convincing if any of you were prepared to say with a straight face that you didn't love The Dark Knight.
-
I remember seeing this show--it was amazing. About an Italian movie producer and the 20 women in his life -mother-nuns-mistress-wives-show girls-actresses. It was on a raked stage that was big tiles and played like a chess game between him and the women. Can't imagine this not being a hit--Fergie plays the mistress which won an award for Anita Morris .
-
he did 2003 revival---the original won for best musical beating dreamgirls
-
It looks a lot more like Chicago in style than I was expecting, but damn, I love 8 1/2, I love the Broadway musical, and I LOVE the cast (minus Hudson and Fergie, but they both have small roles)...so yeah, I can't wait for this, even if it is clearly shouting "Oscar" from the rooftop.
-
The further away you get from the source material the less its recognized. 8 1/2 is an all time cinematic classic. Make a musical DERIVED from the source..okay, sure. Turn it into a film again and all of the sudden its Fellini who? The Oprah crowd will be praising a musical based on starpower and flash rather than its original intent of paying homage to Fellini. Make no mistake people this is not a seperate entity for god's sake its based on 8 1/2. I'm unapologetically passionate about cinema as an artform and will be until the day I die. Its not a lashing against (sigh) consumerism in movies. That would be a simplistic view of it. It just will not draw attention to the Fellini masterpiece. It will only detract. Thats why I'm not happy about it. Call me pretentious and bitchy. I stand by my word.
-
I understand why you'd find it discouraging that a movie of Nine probably won't encourage most viewers to see 8 1/2. But I'm really not seeing how the Nine film TAKES AWAY viewers from 8 1/2, or makes the latter any less of a masterpiece. If the Nine movie sucks, it'll go the way of the Producers movie musical - people will forget it and watch the original film instead. If it's good in its own right, it'll deserve the audiences it gets. There's room in the world for more than one way of telling the same story.
-
is really my beef. You're right though, its not as if Fellini will be forgotten about. Of course there's always room for different interpretations of classics,Shakespeare knows this best. Its just that 8 1/2 is near and dear to my heart.
-
...that more people would be likely to discover 8 1/2 if 9 didn't exist? I don't think it works like that.
-
May 15, 2009 12:23:45 PM CDT
intrigued just by cast and the relation to 8 1/2
by t 1000 xp professional
but why does this scream Girl Power
-
...and DDL choosing this as his post-Oscar project makes it all the more interesting.
-
Fellini was a tired, misogynist, embarrassing old bastard - I have no problem with the idea of Rob Marshall whippin' up a musical version of 8 1/2. One of my favourite pictures of all ever is a similarly irreverent (and yet not) dart about those particular shadows: Bruce LaBruce's Super 8 1/2. The film the wheezin' goat would've made if A - he'd had any soul, B - had anything worth hearing to say and C - had made good on all those gestures towards the pornography. www.mondoirlando.com
-
I'm fairly certain I'm in the wrong place.Didn't mean to burst in on anything...back to it, gents.
